Abstract

Iron oxide (Fe2O3) nanoparticles (NPs), graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), and nanodiamonds (NDs) reinforced poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF‐HFP) nanocomposites were synthesized by a solvent casting technique. The structure and morphology of synthesized nanocomposites were studied using Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The thermal behavior of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) was studied by the thermogravimetric analysis and the derivative thermogravimetry. The dielectric measurements were carried out within the temperature range from 40 to 150°C and in the frequency range from 50 Hz to 15 MHz. At 50 Hz, 140°C, the highest dielectric constant of 92.46 was noted, for the PVDF‐HFP + 10 wt% Fe2O3 + 6 wt% GNPs + 3 wt% NDs and the highest dielectric loss tangent has been observed to be 24.75 at 50 Hz, 140°C for the PVDF‐HFP + 10 wt% Fe2O3 + 4 wt% GNPs + 2 wt% NDs. The electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) was studied in the X‐band and Ku‐band frequency regions (8–18 GHz). High EMI SE values of 31.60 dB and 34 dB were observed for PVDF‐HFP/Fe2O3/GNPs/NDs nanocomposites with 10 wt% Fe2O3 + 8 wt% GNPs + 4 wt% NDs in X‐band and Ku‐band, respectively. These findings suggests PVDF‐HFP/Fe2O3/GNPs/NDs‐based PNCs as an appealing material for EMI shielding applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Emergence of multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA), coupled with the pathogen’s versatile virulence factors, leads to high morbidity and mortality rates. PA possesses a variety of virulence factors and infections caused by multidrug-resistant PA in clinical isolates are a public health problem. The aim of this study is to evaluate the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of PA clinical isolates. Methods: A total of 3120 nonrepetitive clinical samples were collected from the Department of Microbiology in the tertiary care hospital, Government Thoothukudi Medical College, Thoothukudi, between August and September of 2022. Antibiotic susceptibility test was performed through the agar disk diffusion method. The ability of producing biofilm was examined by microtiter colorimetric biofilm assay (tissue culture plate method [TCPM]) and Congo red agar method, and the prevalence of the algD, PslD, and PelF genes among the isolates was determined by polymerase chain reaction. Results: Out of 52 isolates, 67.3% were susceptible PA(S-PA) and 32.69% were multidrug-resistant PA(MDR-PA). The most susceptible antibiotic was found to be aztreonam (90.3%), followed by meropenem (84.6%) whereas most of the organisms were found to be resistant to ciprofloxacin (32.6%), followed by levofloxacin (30.75%). In our study, 84% of the isolates were biofilm producers when detected phenotypically by TCPM, out of which 50% were strong, 26.92% were moderate, and 7.62% were weak biofilm producers. The prevalence of the AlgD, PslD, and PelF genes was 75%, 11.53%, and 1.92% among the isolates, respectively. Conclusions: The high rate of S‑PA and MDR‑PA in its ability to produce biofilm is an alarm for public health. The statistical analysis showed that biofilm production in the S‑PA and MDR‑PA isolates was statistically significant (P < 0.03). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Herein, hybrid polymer nanocomposite films comprising polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PEDOT‐block‐PEG) as matrices and silicon carbide nanoparticles (SiC NPs), montmorillonite (MMT) nanoclay, and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) as nanofillers were fabricated by solution casting. The structural, morphological, and thermal characteristics of the nanocomposite films were assessed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), x‐ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The SEM results show the homogeneous distribution of nanofillers within the polymer matrix. The dielectric behavior and electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency (EMI SE) of the nanocomposites were also analyzed. The maximum dielectric constant (ε) and dielectric loss (tan δ) obtained are 47.77 and 12.08, respectively, at lower frequency (50 Hz, 150°C). The maximum EMI SE was observed to be 16.8 dB in the Ku‐band region (12–18 GHz) for the nanocomposites with 20 wt% SiC, 8 wt% MMT, and 2 wt% GNPs loading. The EMI shielding was found to be absorption dominant and originated from the formation of a conductive network between hybrid nanofillers within the PVDF/PEDOT‐block‐PEG blend thereby improving the EMI SE values. These results suggest that PVDF/PEDOT‐block‐PEG/SiC/MMT/GNPs nanocomposites can be used as an efficient EMI shielding material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Polymer composite (PC) films comprising polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) with manganese dioxide (MnO2) as filler were prepared by simple solution casting method. The structural confirmation of PCs was investigated by Fourier transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The morphological and thermal properties were analyzed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Under the frequency range, 50 Hz to 20 MHz, and temperature from 40 to 150 °C, the dielectric properties and Q-factor values for the as-synthesized PC films were investigated by an impedance analyzer. PVA/PEDOT:PSS/MnO2 having wt% 50:35:15 revealed high dielectric constant (ε) at 1949 and low dielectric loss(tanδ) at 8.13.
