Large wood causes and responds to deposition and erosion within a river corridor. We focus on the anastomosing, gravel‐bed Swan River and two meandering, gravel‐bed tributaries in northwestern Montana, USA to explore the temporal dimensions of deposition and erosion associated with channel avulsions and island formation and to introduce the concept of wood levees. Channel avulsion represents isolation of part of the existing floodplain and formation of an anastomosing channel planform, with wood‐induced deposition at the point of channel bifurcation. Islands form at a wood jam that migrates upstream with time as sediment accumulates in the lee of the jam. The island creates only a local interruption of the single‐channel planform. We use tree‐ring and 14C dating to constrain wood‐induced island ages. We interpret the three wood‐induced forms of deposition and erosion that we describe here as reflecting a temporal continuum. Wood levees have primarily non‐woody vegetation and may be transient relative to the other features. Tributary islands appear to persist from a decade to over a century. Tree ages of 100–200 years at the floodplain avulsion site and the characteristics of the secondary channels suggest that these wood‐induced avulsion features can persist for more than a century. Understanding the temporal dynamics of wood‐induced features and spatial variation in erosion and deposition provides insight into the dynamics and spatial heterogeneity of natural river corridors, with implications for river restoration. Beaver‐based restoration techniques seek to assist with the recovery of stream systems that have been damaged, degraded, or destroyed. In addition to reintroducing beaver, restoration practitioners have sought to mimic the influence of beaver dams on stream processes by building beaver dam analogs (BDAs). Stream restoration has been criticized for a lack of extended monitoring and a dearth of empirical evidence for the efficacy of BDAs. Here, we extend early and previously reported 1‐ to 2‐year monitoring of five BDAs on a low‐gradient stream lacking woody riparian vegetation to 3–6 years, depending on the parameter examined. BDAs raised groundwater near the stream and did not affect water temperatures during the duration of monitoring. Consistent with elevated groundwater levels, riparian willow cuttings grew 2.8–9.6 times more when planted near BDAs than far from BDAs, which was more than the 1.3‐ to 1.4‐fold difference after the first growing season. In contrast, a short‐term association between BDAs and willow survival disappeared in the long term. Likewise, sediment aggradation above the upstream BDA 1 year after construction reversed completely 4 years later, probably due to structural damage during high flows that could not be repaired until flows abated. Annual peak flow levels explained over 80% of the variation in the number of structures requiring annual repair. Our results suggest that BDA‐based restoration should account for both the costs of structure maintenance during project planning and the importance of long‐term monitoring during project assessment. This study navigates the intricate landscape of the Mureș River's upper course, specifically through the contrasting terrains of the Giurgeu Depression and the Toplița-Deda Gorge. It examines the unique relief features and substrates that define the vertical dynamics of the riverbed. The investigation focuses on data collected from four pivotal hydrometric stations: Suseni, Toplița, Stânceni, and Gălăoaia. Here, we determine the thickness of the rock layer (hp) by calculating the difference between the water level and the maximum depth, in relation to the gauge's zero plane. Our analysis highlights the riverbed's monthly regradation patterns within these locales. We uncover notable variations in the scope of vertical dynamics, delineate characteristic periods, and decipher both linear and polynomial trends.

Geophysical and geological research in the Ulleung Basin has been ongoing since the 1970s, involving continuous seismic acquisition and multiple well-drilling projects. This study utilized an integrated quantitative approach with conventional seismic interpretation based on recent trends to understand the history of the shelf-margin development and individual controls that may have influenced each period in the Ulleung Basin. Quantitative analysis was conducted by measuring the progradation (Pse), aggradation (Ase) and sediment influx (Fc) of individual shelf margins in seven dip-oriented seismic profiles, and calculating the shelf-edge gradient (αse) and the P/A ratio. Based on these data and the ratio of accommodation to sediment supply (A/S ratio), which was interpreted from the stratal stacking pattern, five shelf-edge trajectory types were defined and assigned to each shelf margin. By considering individual controls (eustatic fluctuations, sediment supply and tectonic events), we defined the three evolution intervals of the Ulleung Basin during the Middle Miocene to Late Miocene (15 to 6.5 Ma): (1) the upper Middle Miocene (15 to 11.63 Ma) characterized by a moderate sediment supply and high aggradation margin induced by rapid subsidence, (2) the lower Upper Miocene (10.8 to 10 Ma) as a high sediment supply and low aggradation margin associated with reworked sediments from the uplifted Dolgorae Thrust and (3) the uppermost Miocene (9.2 to 6.5 Ma) characterized by a low sediment supply and low aggradation margin experiencing sediment starvation. A comparison with worldwide continental margins indicated that the Ulleung Basin formed under a relatively low rate of progradation (low sediment supply; 4.79 km/Myr) and a high rate of aggradation (high shelf accommodation; 361.04 m/Myr) condition. The SW margin of the Ulleung Basin provides a unique example of understanding stratigraphic architecture variations under changing stress regimes of back-arc setting (extensional to compressional) and understanding of individual controls that influence margin development. Sediment transport in debris rivers is a unique phenomenon of sediment transport in general. This is related to the complexity of the characteristics of the material transported and the nature of the flow that transports sediment. This work aims to predict potential bed profile changes in one of the debris rivers in Indonesia: the Sombe-Lewara River in Central Sulawesi Province. The control of debris flow in this river has been carried out simultaneously by the relevant government agencies by building sediment control structures along the river section. The study was carried out by hydraulic simulation at the intersection of the Sombe River and Lewara River using the HEC-RAS Model with two input data: average discharge and bed load gradations at both upstream boundaries. The average discharge was obtained by rainfall-runoff transformation using the HEC-HMS Model due to the limited discharge data in the study area, while the sediment gradation data was obtained from laboratory test results based on bed load sample data. Due to the limitations of the observation data, the parameter optimization is only applied to the HEC-RAS model, especially the Manning roughness coefficient by comparing the observed water level elevation with the simulated water level elevation. The results of the study indicate that the bed profile elevation in the upstream confluence of the river tends to increase and the bed profile downstream of the confluence tends to decrease. This is closely related to the transport intensity and bed slope upstream and downstream of the river confluence. This study provides a sedimentological, stratigraphic and palaeocurrent investigation of Upper Eocene to Lower Oligocene deep-sea fan deposits found in the central part of the Pindos foreland basin in western Greece. According to facies analysis, the examined succession at Amfilochia area has 13 sedimentary facies and 10 facies and sub-facies associations. Depositional elements include abyssal plain pelagics, outer fan, inner fan, and slope deposits. Outer fan sediments are classified as lobe-axis, lobe-off-axis, lobe-fringe, and distant lobe-fringe deposits, while inner fan sediments are classified as channel-fill, crevasse-splay, internal and external levee deposits. The stratigraphic study shows an upward shift from abyssal plain pelagics to outer, inner fan, and finally slope deposits, implying submarine fan system progradation and progressive infilling of a deep-water sediment depocentre. The sediments were deposited in the foredeep of the Pindos foreland system and correspond to the system's underfilled stage, when sedimentation was unable to exceed the accommodation provided by lithospheric flexure. They point to deposition near the onset of the Pindos orogen, after the closure of the Pindos basin because of the collision of the Apulian with the Pelagonian microplate during the Cretaceous-Palaeogene period. Palaeocurrent data from sole marks show bipolar directions associated with two distinct spreading sub-marine fan deposits. As a result, the study region was split into Upper (major SE-direction flow) and Lower (major NW-direction flow) parts, indicating that axial flows were predominant during sediment deposition. However, as the deposition of the elements continued, the progradation of both systems constrained the space accommodation because of the increased basin sediment supply and forced an increase in the degree of basin confinement that changed the compensational to aggradational stacking pattern. The goals of this research are to develop an updated facies model for these deep-sea fans as well as a robust correlation framework for the various stratigraphic units in the central Pindos foreland basin. This research also connects the stratigraphic development of deep-sea fan deposits to the evolutionary phases of the Pindos foreland system, providing fresh insights into the palaeogeographic circumstances in the Pindos foreland basin. We examined the stratigraphy of alluvial fans formed at the steep range front of the Southern Alps at Te Taho, on the north bank of the Whataroa River in central West Coast, South Island, New Zealand. The range front coincides with the Alpine Fault, an Australian‐Pacific plate boundary fault, which produces regular earthquakes. Our study of range front fans revealed aggradation at 100‐ to 300‐year intervals. Radiocarbon ages and soil residence times (SRTs) estimated by a quantitative profile development index allowed us to elucidate the characteristics of four episodes of aggradation since 1000 CE. We postulate a repeating mode of fan behaviour (fan response cycle [FRC]) linked to earthquake cycles via earthquake‐triggered landslides. FRCs are characterised by short response time (aggradation followed by incision) and a long phase when channels are entrenched and fan surfaces are stable (persistence time). Currently, the Te Taho and Whataroa River fans are in the latter phase. The four episodes of fan building we determined from an OxCal sequence model correlate to Alpine Fault earthquakes (or other subsidiary events) and support prior landscape evolution studies indicating ≥M7.5 earthquakes as the main driver of episodic sedimentation. Our findings are consistent with other historic non‐earthquake events on the West Coast but indicate faster responses than other earthquake sites in New Zealand and elsewhere where rainfall and stream gradients (the basis for stream power) are lower. Judging from the thickness of fan deposits and the short response times, we conclude that pastoral farming (current land‐use) on the fans and probably across much of the Whataroa River fan would be impossible for several decades after a major earthquake. Florida's coastal salt marshes are vulnerable to both direct and indirect human impacts, including climate change and consequent sea-level rise. For a salt marsh to survive in the face of ongoing sea-level rise, organic and/or mineral sediment must accumulate at a rate equal to or faster than that of sea-level increase. We explored the effects of Late Holocene sea-level variations in the Suwannee River Estuary within the Big Bend region of Florida (USA). We conducted a paleoenvironmental study of a sediment core collected from a salt marsh near Cedar Key, on Florida's Gulf of Mexico coast. The core spans the last ~ 320 years of sediment accumulation. Carbon isotope (δ13C) data and diatom assemblages indicate the salt marsh was relatively stable during that time frame and was dominated by C3 vegetation, likely Juncus roemerianus, but experienced moderate variations in salinity that likely reflect changes in sea-level, with an increase in salinity and marine incursions between ~ 1850 and 1930 CE. Whereas small vertical changes in sea-level have the potential to inundate large areas of the low-gradient salt marsh, as observed during the interval ~ 1850–1930 CE, the salt-marsh vegetation recovered quickly after 1930 CE, indicating that the rate of aggradation and vegetation growth kept pace with the rate of sea-level rise. Despite the apparent resiliency of Big Bend salt marshes and likelihood that they will persist through accretion and migration, we expect to see major changes in salt-marsh ecology if rates of sea-level rise continue to accelerate. Large boreal rivers in Sweden are generally impounded by hydropower dams and a large proportion of main stem shallow flowing habitats have been lost. Tributaries often contain the last undisturbed habitats and could be important for the conservation of species diversity. In particular, tributary mouth areas could be biodiversity hot-spots, due to their vicinity to the main stem and favorable environmental conditions. In this study, we investigate whether tributary mouth areas in two impounded boreal rivers (Ume River and Lule River) could be regarded as biodiversity hot-spots for fish. Based on standardized electrofishing in 20 tributary mouths, we find that overall fish diversity is generally low. The highest species richness and diversity was found in mouth areas dominated by intermediate substrate sizes (gravel – cobble). Few, if any, species were found in areas where fine sediments (smaller than sand) dominated. The tributary mouth areas had similar species richness and diversity as areas in the tributaries located 1-km upstream of the mouth, but the fish community composition often differed between these two types of sites. Management action favoring fish diversity in the tributary mouth areas could include protection or rehabilitation of areas dominated by medium sized substrate and reduction of erosion and transport of fine sediments in the tributaries. Overall, we find no support for tributary mouths being hot-spots for fish biodiversity and while some patterns in diversity gives hints on suitable management action, it is important to further understand impacts in tributaries and their mouths and the temporal dynamics of the fish community. The region around the coastal Chennai area, India, is drained by three major rivers that rise from the remnants of the Eastern Ghats and receive dominantly the northeast rains. These rivers meander short distances, deposit sediments into the Bay of Bengal and preserve signatures of past phases of sedimentation and incision. In this study, detailed mapping using satellite imageries and extensive field work, logging of the river cliff bank sections was supported by sediment texture and structure and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dates. The main objective of this study was to infer the major periods of aggradation and incision in coastal drainage basins receiving dominantly the northeast rains. Integration of all the earlier available dated alluvial sequences (14C ages) and the present study OSL dates reveal that a major period of sedimentation occurred during the early Holocene (9 to 8.3 ka), mid Holocene (7.6–5.5 ka) and late Holocene to recent (2.4 and 1.6 ka, 0.9–0.6 ka and around 0.2 ka) periods. The Koratallaiyar river has preserved older middle Holocene terraces. Younger ages of the south easterly and east flowing rivers such as the Palar and the Coovum signify that they have incised and eroded to the present riverbed levels by catastrophic floods during the late Holocene period. This has resulted in an imbalance between sediment supply and sediment transporting power thus laterally stacking sediments rather than vertically. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the last twenty years, the topsoil has reappeared on the former industrial sites on the right bank of the River Garonne in the city of Bordeaux. After a period of neglect, several major projects have helped to build the structural framework of a landscape in the residential development of this vast polder which was built from the 18th century onwards. Re-exposing the topsoil has provided an opportunity to reintroduce water into the landscape by creating spaces that can be flooded if the river breaches the embankment. These types of projects which are now for the most part developed within a context of limiting urban sprawl require an in-depth geomorphological understanding of the landscape. By tracing the geo-formation of the polder on the right bank of the river Garonne, the article places contemporary projects within the historical context of this piece of land. It invites us to redefine infrastructures no longer as systems for controlling and conquering land but as systems of mediation with the soil’s biogeochemical phenomena.

Alluvial river in the piedmont area deposits and incises cyclically, in response to both exogenetic and endogenetic forcing across a range of timescales. The paces of these processes unveil the mechanisms governing the evolution of alluvial fan-river system and affect the policy for river management. Numerical simulation suggests that the incision of alluvial river is much faster than the deposition process. However, the field observations are rare. Alluvial rivers entrench up to 300 m into the alluvial fans built pre-Holocene on the northern piedmont of Chinese Tianshan, which provide ideal sites to unveil the pace of alluvial fan-river evolution. Jingou River is one of these rivers, with four levels of terraces identified at the downstream area. These terrace deposits are characterized by a complex of upper very coarse gravels and cobble (VCGC) unit and lower medium and coarse gravels (MCG) unit. In this study, potassium-feldspar (K-feldspar) single grain pIR 110 IR 170 luminescence dating procedure was employed to date the samples taken from sandy lens of both upper VCGC and lower MCG units, for which the depositional ages are supposed to be associated with the fan-building and river incision processes, respectively. The luminescence ages of the lower MCG unit suggests a gradual fan building phase between 16 ± 1.9 ka and 8.1 ± 0.9 ka, while the ages of the upper VCGC unit cluster around ∼5.2 ka rather than a monotonic decrease towards low level terraces. Several scenarios are discussed with respect to the attained age sequences to unravel the pace of deposition and incision of Jingou River, of which the asymmetric aggradation and incision is more preferred and echoes to the finding of previous numerical investigation. We describe the soils, stratigraphy, distribution and ages of alluvial fans in the North Carolina Piedmont to understand factors contributing to their formation in this low relief, humid‐temperate setting. We find that those contributing factors (i.e., contributing source basin area and rock type; and climate) parallel, but do not precisely mimic those of arid and semi‐arid climate fans. Digital elevation model (DEM) and field observations revealed that about 25% of 209 mapped basin outlets contain alluvial fans. Fans are all < 0.01 km2 in area, with a contributing basin area threshold of ~0.1km2 above which fans are not commonly observed. Fans issuing from basins underlain by more easily weatherable and erodible argillites are generally larger than those that contain more resistant rhyolites. Radiocarbon dates of fan sediments are dominantly late Holocene (13 ages < 3000 ka; two ages between 7000–10,000 ka), with notably no late‐Pleistocene aged fans. We thus infer that fan aggradation is predicated on watershed characteristics – and climates – that favor high sediment supply to discharge ratios. Detailed soil and sediment descriptions from pits located on 15 fans reveal that approximately half exhibit cumulic over‐thickened soil profiles forming dominantly in sheetflood deposits, providing evidence of ongoing, relatively slow deposition. Low iron ratios measured from those fan soils suggests recycling of more developed soils from basin hillslopes. Occasional matrix‐supported debris flow deposits in some fans provide evidence of much less common, rapid (0.5–1 m) fan accumulation. While acknowledging a paucity of detailed climate records in the Piedmont precludes identifying precise mechanistic relationships, our mapping, soils and sedimentologic data suggest that climates favoring modest hillslope erosion without extreme runoff lead to periods of fan aggradation in this transport‐limited landscape. Overall, this work documents significant rock‐type modulated, climate‐driven Holocene landscape evolution in the south‐eastern US Piedmont predating legacy sediment erosion and deposition that has gone largely underappreciated. The headwaters of fluvial systems on the East European Plain between the boundaries of the Marine Isotope Stage 2 (MIS 2) and MIS 6 glaciations evolved during the last 150,000 years. At least three main events of high surface runoff caused intensive erosion: at the end of MIS 6, at the end of MIS 2 and in the Middle Holocene. Erosion developed in the territory with variable resistance of geological substrate, from hard-to-erode tills to weak sandy deposits. All erosional features in moraines formed in the pre-Holocene time. Even relatively large forms, such as balkas (small dry valleys), have not yet reached concave longitudinal profiles. A general tendency of their development was deepening. Short episodes of incision occurring during climatic events with increased water flow alternated with long periods of stabilization. Sand-covered areas are most favorable for linear erosion. The gullies formed in the Middle Holocene developed concave longitudinal profiles. The diversity of catchment areas, initial slope inclinations and sediment properties causing their resistance to erosion led to greater differences in the relief features and evolution of the upper reaches of the fluvial systems within the MIS 6 glaciation area compared to the more uniform landscape conditions in the extraglacial regions. This study highlights the relationship between the dynamics of the hydrological regime in a river basin and the morphodynamic potential that appears in the context of increasing frequency and intensity of current climatic phenomena. Climate change characterized by the high frequency and intensity of torrential rains and floods, especially in the last decade, with a maximum amplitude in the summer months (June-July), alternating with periods of drought have brought to a series of geomorphological changes in the Gilort river basin. These processes are amplified by the high degree of fragmentation of the relief, by the presence of springs that feed the hydrographic network and by the important rainfall contribution to the formation of river flows. In the high mountainous area of the basin, there are a series of debris flows that have been triggered in the last ten years, during torrential rains and exceptional floods, by major changes in the land cover and by the transport of materials in the drainage section. At the exit of the mountain, the longitudinal profile of the river changes radically with the decrease of the slope, so that most of the coarse alluvium is deposited in the riverbed in the sectors of the contact depressions at the foot of the mountain. At the contact between the mountains and the Subcarpathian Depression, due to a pronounced decrease of the riverbed slope, the phenomenon of bed aggradation occurs. This study aims to describe how the construction process of a reservoir dam affects and changes in river morphology such as cross-section changes and total sediment movement in different annual and seasonal scales. Cross-sectional and profile changes, and spatial distribution of differences (degradation and aggradation areas) between topographic measurements and bend variations are also discussed. For this purpose, a field measurement campaign was carried out on Büyükkumla stream, where Büyükkumla dam is built, from the spillway of the dam to the Marmara Sea. Topographic measurements were taken every six months from the beginning of the dam's construction until the body is completed. Precise measurements were made across the entire stream, including the thalweg of the mainstream bed, up to 25 m on the right and left bank at 20-m intervals, and at the intermediate points where the required cross-sectional changes were found. The aggradation and degradation volumes were determined as much as the number of cross-sections available for each region at different time periods. Besides, the reasons for these aggradations and degradation were investigated considering the construction activities and meteorological conditions. Finally, our results show that there is a correlation between dam construction activities and downstream geomorphology changes. It is also observed that excavation activities in dam construction have a significant impact and regulate downstream and the changes in annual and semi-annual periods differ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the results of laboratory experiments specifically designed to quantify the height and migration rate of an aggrading gravel front. The experiments were performed in sediment feed mode with constant water and sediment supply. Particular care was put into the experimental procedure and the methods to determine the quantities of interest to ensure reproducibility of the results. The celerity and height of an aggradation front were modeled as functions of the Froude number of the flow for the initial bed profile and of a load ratio defined as the ratio of the sediment feed rate to the transport capacity of the flow for the initial bed. The two control parameters (Froude number and load ratio) also determined the translational or dispersive nature of a sediment front. Two predictors were provided to estimate the dimensionless height and celerity of an aggradation front. The former was an increasing function of the load ratio and a decreasing function of the Froude number, and the latter was roughly proportional to the squared Froude number and had no evident relationship with the load ratio. The present results are of interest for scholars and practitioners needing to determine the key properties of swift gravel fronts as those developing, for example, during flash floods. Braided rivers undergo continuous morphological evolution in response to variations in water and sediment fluxes associated with a plethora of natural and anthropogenic disturbances, which has to date remained poorly understood. Here, a one-dimensional hydro-sediment-morphodynamic model is proposed for braided rivers. It is built upon an extended synthetic channel geometric model which encodes the essential, three-dimensional morphological information into a one-dimensional synthetic channel. It is first applied to the Rees River (New Zealand) to investigate overall morphological evolution (aggradation/degradation) during a single flood event. It is shown that the channel tends to degrade with increasing peak discharge and decreasing sediment supply, while the effect of baseflow discharge on aggradation/degradation is negligible unless the baseflow discharge exceeds a critical value. Then the proposed model is applied to resolve long-term morphological evolution in the Tuotuo River (China) reach (up to the year 2050), the source region of the Yangtze River, in response to projected water and sediment fluxes. Sustained degradation in the river reach is observed. The present study yields a viable physics-based method to predict overall aggradation or degradation of braided rivers under unsteady water and sediment fluxes over both short and long time scales. • A three-stage alluvial fan pattern was built since MIS3. • Cold-dry conditions promote the aggradation of debris flow deposits. • Warm-humid climate leads to perennial streamflow on the fan surface. • Climate is the main factor controlling the evolution of Xiangpi fan. Alluvial fans in the piedmont zones of mountains respond most rapidly to tectonic activity, base-level conditions, and climate changes. These allogenic signals are effectively recorded by the external morphology and internal sedimentary characteristics of the fan. Based on field survey interpretation and integrated optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) chronology, we selected a case study of the modern Xiangpi Fan on the south bank of Lake Qinghai, NE Tibetan Plateau, and built a three-stage alluvial fan pattern since Marine isotope stages 3 (MIS3), namely, the debris flow lobe building stage (DFLBS), aeolian building stage (ABS), and streamflow reworking stage (SRS). The climatic indicators, such as the total organic carbon (TOC) flux, precipitation, and sediment particle size flux, are highly correlated with the above stages, indicating that the sedimentary process and changes in fan morphology effectively record orbital climate changes in the Lake Qinghai basin. During the DFLBS, the cold-dry climate accelerated the sediment yield sufficiently, leading to many coarse-grained sediments and low TOC flux being imported into the basin through debris flow processes. During the ABS, the extreme dry-cold climate caused the stagnation of fan development, and aeolian processes dominated the transport of fine sediment. In the SRS, warm-humid conditions led to limited sediment yield and perennial stream power, which promoted the transport of fine-grained material and TOC to the basin by braided–meandering channels. The riverbed regradation is the direct consequence of various physico-geographic and socio-economic factors influence. In the first group one must distinguish the characteristics of the upper hydrographic basin from that situated downstream of Cluj-Napoca. The operation of the Someşul Mic hydropower system is decisive for the evolution of the riverbeds dynamics. The relationships hp=f(T) and hp5=f(T) show similarities, but also differentiation in their multiannual tendencies. In case of all three stations there were identified periods with high dynamics, but also periods of significant stability. Based on variation trends, eight distinguished periods were established at the first two stations and seven at Salatiu. By comparing the linear trends, they indicate different evolutions at all three stations and the polynomial trends show some similarities between Apahida and Salatiu stations.

Check dams are built to control erosion processes and torrential floods. In Serbia, legally binding documents, VOS (2002) and PPRS (2010), provide the concept for the water supply of the population and industry by regional systems for which water is provided by building high dams and formation of reservoirs. With this concept, it is often not possible to meet the needs of local communities in mountainous areas. In order to contribute to solving the water supply problems of these mostly poor villages, research was conducted on the possibility of using check dam aggradation groundwater for this purpose. Field investigations and analysis of project documentation for numerous check dams and aggradations in Serbia were carried out. Potential quantities and quality of groundwater in the aggradations were analyzed as a resource for the water supply of the population. The results of the research indicate very favorable possibilities of the aggradations for the accumulation of groundwater in the form of unconfined or phreatic aquifer with a free water table, in quantities that can be used for water supply. It was stated that: 1) under favorable conditions, with check dams on watercourses with constant flow and large-scale aggradations, there is a possibility of accumulating sufficient quantities of groundwater as a resource for water supply, 2) improving the quality of infiltrated waters by the process of filtration through intergranular porous media of the aggradation, and reaching the level of water supply quality, and 3) favorable economic parameters for opening the source at the aggradation, compared to other types of water sources. The possibility that check dams, in addition to their traditional role, could be used for local water supply facilities was also highlighted. The present study is an attempt to infer the response of the dryland fluvial sequences to paleoenvironmental change since the last glacial maximum (LGM) from the semi-arid Saurashtra region, a basaltic terrain of the Late Cretaceous age (Deccan Trap), of Western India. We employed a conventional sedimentological analysis supported by sediment geochemistry, which was constrained by optical dating. Based on detailed field investigation, we identified five terrace sequences from the valley fill deposit in the Shetrunji River basin since 18 ka (i.e. Post LGM). The sedimentary archives expose the deposition during three alternate phases of aggradation and incision, marked on the basis of morphostratigraphy and timing of landform evolution. The coastal region of western India experienced a widespread valley aggradation in response to the rising sea stand and under gradual strengthening of the monsoonal conditions around the 18–9 ka period. The Early Holocene climatic optima (9–7.5 ka) coupled with lower than present but rising sea stand, triggered the intense erosion in the valleys of Shetrunji River basin, leading to erosion/lack of sediment preservation. This was followed by the Middle Holocene period (7.5–5 ka), which experienced valley aggradation. This was ended by the incision post 5.5 ka in the lower reaches of the Shetrunji River. The sea stand was similar to present-day stand, as evidenced by the change from fluvial to the estuarine environment in the top sequence of Site-SL at 5.5 ka. The Late Holocene relative sea stand lowering ~3 ka, led to an incision in the estuarine terrace of about 2 m. The causal mechanism for triggering of this incision is most likely the relative fall in sea stand to present-day level from its Middle Holocene high stand. The Late Holocene period (3–1 ka) shows aggradation in upper reach in fluctuating hydrodynamic conditions with seasonality, followed by a relatively good monsoonal condition at < 1 ka, leading to the incision due to climate-tectonic interplay. In this study, we captured how a river channel responds to a sediment pulse originating from a dam removal using multiple lines of evidence derived from streamflow gages along the Patapsco River, Maryland, USA. Gages captured characteristics of the sediment pulse, including travel times of its leading edge (~7.8 km yr−1) and peak (~2.6 km yr−1) and suggest both translation and increasing dispersion. The pulse also changed local hydraulics and energy conditions, increasing flow velocities and Froude number, due to bed fining, homogenization and/or slope adjustment. Immediately downstream of the dam, recovery to pre‐pulse conditions occurred within the year, but farther downstream recovery was slower, with the tail of the sediment pulse working through the lower river by the end of the study 7 years later. The patterns and timing of channel change associated with the sediment pulse were not driven by large flow or suspended sediment‐transporting events, with change mostly occurring during lower flows. This suggests pulse mobility was controlled by process‐factors largely independent of high flow. In contrast, persistent changes occurred to out‐of‐channel flooding dynamics. Stage associated with flooding increased during the arrival of the sediment pulse, 1 to 2 years after dam removal, suggesting persistent sediment deposition at the channel margins and nearby floodplain. This resulted in National Weather Service‐indicated flood stages being attained by 3–43% smaller discharges compared to earlier in the study period. This study captured a two‐signal response from the sediment pulse: (1) short‐ to medium‐term (weeks to months) translation and dispersion within the channel, resulting in aggradation and recovery of bed elevations and changing local hydraulics; and (2) dispersion and persistent longer‐term (years) effects of sediment deposition on overbank surfaces. This study further demonstrated the utility of US Geological Survey gage data to quantify geomorphic change, increase temporal resolution, and provide insights into trajectories of change over varying spatial and temporal scales. Abstract The use of native species’ stem cuttings in riparian forests disturbed by silting could be a promising low-tech alternative for restoration practitioners in riverscape rehabilitation. In this study, we evaluated the vegetative propagation of Amazonian native plants (Buchenavia parviflora, Euterpe oleracea, Ficus insipida and Socratea exorrhiza) with the addition of a bio-fertilizer, and humic and fulvic acids in soil disturbed by human-induced silting. We found that F. insipida and B. parviflora were able to grow and showed high survival percentage with the development of leaves, buds, and roots; even in nutrient deficient and clayey soils. We also found that the frequency of application and the concentration of the organic additives did not show significant influence on plants’ development. Thus, advance in situ tests with both species could be an interesting step to contribute to riverine ecosystems restoration practices.

The Messinian (Upper Miocene) is char acter ized at the level of its mar ginal basins by the development of numerous carbonate platforms. This study concerns the Messinian platform of the Boukadir region in the south of the Chelif Basin in Algeria. It is composed of a lower prograding rimmed platform and an upper aggradational homoclinal ramp resting upon the Tortonian-Lower Messinian Blue Marl Formation, and its thickness reaches ~280 m in the Chelif Basin. The upper red-algae unit is uniform and subhorizontal with a minimum thickness of 90 m. Petrographic analysis of the upper ramp reveals three different microfacies, characterized by Lithothamnium, foraminifera, high porosity, and a microsparitic matrix. MF1 is a packstone, MF2 a packstone/bindstone deposited above the fair-weather wave base and MF3 is a wackestone to packstone deposited below this level. The upper unit is made up entirely of autochthonous biogenic elements without significant external fluvial contribution. It was formed in a shallow marine environment, with very high productivity and a significant export of the sediments produced. This aggradation was followed by a rapid exhumation (regression) transforming all the aragonite into calcite. The platforms correspond to the T2 complex reef formation (6.7-5.95 Ma) documented on the other Messinian carbonate platforms in the South of the Alboran Sea that formed just before the Messinian Salinity Crisis. Low rates of lateral migration (centimetres to decimetres per year) combined with relatively high rates of vertical accretion (millimetres to centimetres per year) recorded in microtidal channels of the Venice Lagoon (Italy) give rise to point‐bar geometries and internal facies arrangements that differ substantially from widely accepted models of point‐bar sedimentary architecture. In this study, field data from the Venice Lagoon are combined with a three‐dimensional forward stratigraphic model, the 'Point‐Bar Sedimentary Architecture Numerical Deduction' (PB‐SAND), to predict the stratal geometries of point bars formed in aggradational settings. The PB‐SAND uses a combined geometric and stochastic modelling approach that can be constrained by field evidence. The model applied determines the geometry of four point bars generated by 9 to 11 m wide channels cutting through salt marshes. An iterative best‐fit modelling approach has been used to obtain multiple simulations for each case study, each of which fits the observations derived from the analysis of time‐series historical aerial photographs and 44 sedimentary cores. Results demonstrate how the geometry of the bars is determined by the development of two key stratal surfaces: the point‐bar brink and channel‐thalweg surfaces. These surfaces are defined by the progressive translation and vertical shift of the point‐bar brink (i.e. break of slope between bar top and bar slope) and the channel thalweg (i.e. deepest part of the channel) during bar evolution. The approach is used to: (i) reconstruct three‐dimensional point‐bar geometries; (ii) propose alternative reconstructions; (iii) provide insight to drive the acquisition of additional data to better constrain the proposed models; and (iv) provide insight into the mechanism of bar growth for slowly migrating channels in settings subject to relatively high rates of aggradation. This study highlights how interaction between styles of planform transformation and latero‐vertical shifts of meandering channels can determine the geometry of related sedimentary bodies. Pressures on braided river systems in New Zealand are increasing due to anthropogenic stresses such as demand for irrigation water, braidplain conversion to farmland and invasive vegetation, as well as extreme natural events associated with earthquakes and climate change. These pressures create issues around preserving braided river physical environments and associated ecosystems, and managing hazards such as floods, aggradation and erosion. A need for more robust understanding and quantification of braided river morphodynamic processes underpins many of these issues. Here, we present eight morphodynamic research challenges to service this need. The first four research challenges relate to managing aggradation‐related flooding hazards; the last four address issues stem largely from recent dairy expansion, which has created huge pressure to take land and irrigation water from the alp‐fed braided rivers and to alter flow regimes at their mouths. Hāpua, the freshwater lagoons found where most braided rivers meet the coast, show complex morphodynamic behaviour in response to the interplay of river and coastal processes, and their special ecosystems are sensitive to river flow and sediment load changes. We discuss how physical laboratory experiments and novel numerical modelling can help to understand the morphological processes braided rivers undergo, and we show how those research advances could inform planning and legal decisions to regulate land rights and irrigation water allocation on New Zealand's braidplains. We illustrate these environmental and engineering issues and research challenges with examples from the Kowhai, Waiho, Waiau, Rangitata and Hurunui Rivers. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. The headwaters of fluvial systems on the East European Plain between the boundaries of the Marine Isotope Stage 2 (MIS 2) and MIS 6 glaciations evolved during the last 150,000 years. At least three main events of high surface runoff caused intensive erosion: at the end of MIS 6, at the end of MIS 2 and in the Middle Holocene. Erosion developed in the territory with variable resistance of geological substrate, from hard-to-erode tills to weak sandy deposits. All erosional features in moraines formed in the pre-Holocene time. Even relatively large forms, such as balkas (small dry valleys), have not yet reached concave longitudinal profiles. A general tendency of their development was deepening. Short episodes of incision occurring during climatic events with increased water flow alternated with long periods of stabilization. Sand-covered areas are most favorable for linear erosion. The gullies formed in the Middle Holocene developed concave longitudinal profiles. The diversity of catchment areas, initial slope inclinations and sediment properties causing their resistance to erosion led to greater differences in the relief features and evolution of the upper reaches of the fluvial systems within the MIS 6 glaciation area compared to the more uniform landscape conditions in the extraglacial regions.

There is limited knowledge about the preservation of aggradation phases in Quaternary fluvial records. Previous numerical modelling of erosion and deposition in Late Quaternary Allier River (France) generated the prediction that this river has reach‐specific fluvial dynamics related to climate‐driven tributary sediment‐flux dynamics. To test this prediction, new optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) samples were collected of the Late Quaternary Fx terrace at five locations along a stretch of 60 km. OSL dates of both quartz and feldspar sand grains indicate that all relatively basalt‐poor sediments display significantly different ages for each reach (ranging from 36.3 ± 2.0 to 21.1 ± 2.3 ka). The more basalt‐rich terrace body consistently yields ages in the range 21.1 ± 1.7 to 16.1 ± 1.5 ka, suggesting contemporaneous aggradation along the whole studied Allier reach during this interval. Our own new OSL date of a Tartaret eruption around 16.8 ± 2.5 ka also fits this time window, suggesting a direct link with volcanic activity. However, there are many more dated volcanic events that coincide with the older basalt‐poor units, making it less likely that a direct link between terrace‐sediment basalt content and volcanic activity exists. The timings of the dated depositional events in MIS 3 and 2 all match with simulated climate drivers and published landscape erosion rates. Counterintuitively, the volcanic Chaîne des Puys area supplied more sediment during the cold and dry Last Glacial Maximum. Basalt content in the Allier terrace sediments reflects climate‐related sediment‐flux dynamics upstream. The scarcity of older basalt‐poor sediment bodies from MIS 4 and 3 in the Fx terrace suggests that less sediment was supplied and/or the intermittent erosional phases in the Allier were very effective at removing them. We hypothesize that this observation of predominant preservation of the last aggradation phase could be a common phenomenon in most climate‐driven terraces. © 2020 The Authors. Aggradation and fluvial incision controlled by downstream base‐level changes at timescales of 10 to 500 kyr is incorporated in classic sequence stratigraphic models. However, upstream climate control on sediment supply and discharge variability causes fluvial incision and aggradation as well. Orbital forcing often regulates climate change at 10 to 500 kyr timescales while tectonic processes such as flexural (un)loading exert a dominant control at timescales longer than 500 kyr. It remains challenging to attribute fluvial incision and aggradation to upstream or downstream processes or disentangle allogenic from autogenic forcing, because time control is mostly limited in fluvial successions. The Palaeocene outcrops of the fluvial Lebo Shale Member in north‐eastern Montana (Williston Basin, USA) constitute an exception. This study uses a distinctive tephra layer and two geomagnetic polarity reversals to create a 15 km long chronostratigraphic framework based on the correlation of twelve sections. Three aggradation–incision sequences are identified with durations of approximately 400 kyr, suggesting a relation with long‐eccentricity. This age control further reveals that incision occurred during the approach of – or during – a 405 kyr long‐eccentricity minimum. A long‐term relaxation of the hydrological cycle related to such an orbital phasing potentially exerts an upstream climate control on river incision. Upstream, an expanding vegetation cover is expected because of an increasingly constant moisture supply to source areas. Entrapping by vegetation led to a significantly reduced sediment supply relative to discharge, especially at times of low evapotranspiration. Hence, high discharges resulted in incision. The links between flood frequency and rates of channel migration are poorly defined in the ephemeral rivers typical of arid regions. Exploring these links in desert fluvial landscapes would augment our understanding of watershed biogeochemistry and river morphogenesis on early Earth (i.e. prior to the greening of landmasses). Accordingly, we analyse the Mojave River (California), one of the largest watercourses in the Great Basin of the western United States. We integrate discharge records with channel‐migration rates derived from dynamic time‐warping analysis and chronologically calibrated subsidence rates, thereby constraining the river's formative conditions. Our results reveal a slight downstream decrease in bankfull discharge on the Mojave River, rather than the downstream increase typically exhibited by perennial streams. Yet, the number of days per year during which the channel experiences bankfull or higher stages is roughly maintained along the river's length. Analysis of historical peak flood records suggests that the incidence of channel‐formative events responds to modulation in watershed runoff due to the precipitation in the river's headwaters over decades to centuries. Our integrated analysis finally suggests that, while maintaining hydraulic geometries that are fully comparable with many other rivers worldwide, ephemeral desert rivers akin to the Mojave are capable of generating a surprisingly wide range of depositional geometries in the stratigraphic record. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. In the present study channel confluence movements of two confluence points namely, Chel-Kumlai rivers' confluence and Chel-Neora rivers' confluence in the lower Chel-Neora river system has been analyzed using multi temporal Landsat images and topographical sheets. The study area is a part of region popularly known as 'Dooars' which falls in the zone of transition between the dissected outer Himalayan hill surface and the gently rolling Teesta-Brahmaputra plains, and is famous for notorious incidents of channel avulsion and river capture activities. This study tries to elucidate various fluvial processes responsible for confluence dynamics. The temporal scale of the study spans 62 years (1955-2017) and establishes the fact that the confluence points of the rivers have shifted both upstream and downstream in much variable rates during the assessment period. Natural sediment regimes of fluvial systems are variable and important to the biological and physical structures of rivers, yet watershed degradation has led to increased fine sediments entering and aggrading in rivers. As a result, quantifying substrate composition is important for targeting and monitoring restoration. Conventional methods for assessing substrate composition (e.g., pebble counts) can be time‐consuming and biased. We examined the use of the photogrammetric technique, structure‐from‐motion (SfM), as an alternative method by measuring streambed roughness. We expanded its application to submerged substrates in an artificial streambed to assess if roughness could predict pebble count substrate size percentiles across a range of manipulated levels of fine sediment aggradation. We then assessed the use of SfM in a free‐flowing river streambed. Results from the artificial streambed with coarse substrates (≤31% added fine sediment) revealed that repeated SfM models of the same streambed had a high degree of similarity (mean difference = 1 mm) and a strong relationship between SfM‐derived roughness and pebble counts (r2 >.95). This relationship was weaker (r2 <.66) and violated regression variance assumptions when substrates had up to 47% (55.7 kg) fines added, possibly due to SfM characterizing details not captured by pebble counts. In the natural streambed, there was a strong relationship between percentiles from the SfM model roughness and pebble count diameter (r2 =.96). SfM appears to be an efficient and appropriate alternative to direct substrate measurements across a broad range of streambed substrate compositions and thus a useful tool to model streambed morphology. We draw on published studies of floodplain organic carbon storage, wildfire‐related effects on floodplains in temperate and high latitudes, and case studies to propose a conceptual model of the effects of wildfire on floodplain organic carbon storage in relation to climate and valley geometry. Soil organic carbon typically constitutes the largest carbon stock in floodplains in fire‐prone regions, although downed wood can contain significant organic carbon. We focus on the influence of wildfire on soil organic carbon and downed wood as opposed to standing vegetation to emphasize the geomorphic influences resulting from wildfire on floodplain organic carbon stocks. The net effect of wildfire varies depending on site‐specific characteristics including climate and valley geometry. Wildfire is likely to reduce carbon stock in steep, confined valley segments because increased water and sediment yields following fire create net floodplain erosion. The net effect of fire in partly confined valleys depends on site‐specific interactions among floodplain aggradation and erosion, and, in high‐latitude regions, permafrost degradation. In unconfined valleys in temperate latitudes, wildfire is likely to slightly increase floodplain organic carbon stock as a result of floodplain aggradation and wood deposition. In unconfined valleys in high latitudes underlain by permafrost, wildfire is likely in the short‐term to significantly decrease floodplain organic carbon via permafrost degradation and reduce organic‐layer thickness. Permafrost degradation reduces floodplain erosional resistance, leading to enhanced stream bank erosion and greater carbon fluxes into channels. The implications of warming climate and increased wildfires for floodplain organic carbon stock thus vary. Increasing wildfire extent, frequency, and severity may result in significant redistribution of organic carbon from floodplains to the atmosphere via combustion in all environments examined here, as well as redistribution from upper to lower portions of watersheds in the temperate zone and from floodplains to the oceans via riverine transport in the high‐latitudes. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. The present study aims to improve current understanding of the sedimentation of subtidal point bars, analyzing interaction between tidal currents and waves in shaping a submerged meander bend of the microtidal Venice Lagoon (Italy), and it is based on coupling of sedimentological studies, geophysical analyses and numerical modelling. The Venice Lagoon is characterized by an average depth of about 1·5 m over subtidal platforms and a mean tidal range of about 1·0 m. The morphodynamic evolution of the lagoon is strongly affected by intense seasonal windstorms, which promote the formation of wind waves triggering sediment resuspension and bottom erosion. The study channel is 70 to 100 m wide, it has a radius of curvature of about 260 m and cuts through a permanently submerged subtidal platform. Water depth ranges from 1·0 to 5·0 m below mean sea level on the subtidal platform and channel thalweg, respectively. Different from classical architectural models, the study point‐bar beds do not show sigmoidal geometries, but consist of horizontally‐bedded deposits abruptly overlying clinostratified beds. Sedimentation in the study bar is hypothesized to stem from the interaction between the in‐channel secondary helical flow, as for most meander bends, and wave winnowing of the subaqueous overbank areas. Laterally accreting point‐bar deposits point out that the curvature‐induced helical flow redistributed sediment from the channel thalweg to the bar top and contributed to the development of the 'classical' fining‐upward grain size trend. The marked truncation surface, separating clinostratified bar deposits from overlying horizontally‐bedded platform sediments is interpreted here as due to bar top wave‐winnowing, which also possibly promoted bank collapses. In the proposed model, sediments remobilized from bar top and subaqueous overbank areas were transported into the channel, forming peculiar 'apron‐like' accumulations, where sand accumulated through avalanching processes and mud settled down from suspension. This study proposes a local paleo–landscape reconstruction of the Danube floodplain based on a stratigraphic sequence retrieved from Brateș Lake which, by its emplacement near the confluence of Danube – Prut rivers, was fully receptive to changes associated to hydrological, geomorphological or anthropogenic driven events. Due to its intermediate position within the Lower Danube valley Brateș Lake is a proxy for the evolution of Cotul Dunării area (the region of Danube valley turning from S–N to W–E direction) and provide valuable information about the timing of Danube river advancement to the Black Sea after its reconnection to World Ocean. The sediments were analysed to get the history of their deposition by means of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C dating, grain–size parameters, organic matter and carbonate content, magnetic susceptibility together with paleo–fauna and pollen content which altogether led to the identification of main stages: i) delta front advance into Danube estuary (before 8000 BP), ii) shoreline foreshore deposits which describe shoreline position (8000–7900 yrs BP), iii) river floodplain development (7900–5300/5000 yrs BP), iv) lake formation (5300/5000 yrs BP – present).

Two-dimensional (2D) numerical models are useful tools for studying river morphology. Frequently, 2D numerical models are often applied to predict the impacts of the artificial changes to rivers and estuaries. These changes may be caused by altered watershed hydrology, variations in the sediment supply and the construction of artificial works such as dams, embankments and tidal gutters. The aim of this study was to apply the CCHE2D model in simulating riverbed morphological variation in the Co Chien Estuary of Vietnam with complex morphology under the combined impacts of hydrodynamic processes such as waves, flow field, tidal currents and sediment transport. First, the proposed model was calibrated using water surface level and current speed data during dry and flood seasons in 2010. Calibrated results showed satisfactory coefficients (root mean square error smaller than 0.10 and Brier skill score (BSS) criteria varying between 0.63 and 0.94). Second, the proposed model is applied to simulate riverbed level variation for Co Chien Estuary after the 6-year flood (2010–2015). The results were evaluated comparing deviations between simulated and measured elevations at multiple monitoring cross sections and longitudinal bed profiles after the 6-year flood. Compared results confirmed that the proposed model is suitable for simulating hydrodynamic processes and riverbed morphological changes in the study area with BSS criteria greater than 0.68. Arlington Canyon, in the northwest part of Santa Rosa Island, Channel Islands National Park, California, has been the setting for important scientific discoveries over the past half century, including the oldest human remains in North America, several vertebrate fossil sites, and purported evidence of a catastrophic extinction event at the end of the Pleistocene. The canyon is filled with alluvial sediments that date to between 16.4 and 1.1 ka (thousands of calibrated years before present), representing accumulation that occurred primarily in response to rising sea levels during the late Pleistocene and Holocene. The deposits are laterally discontinuous, exhibit a high degree of sedimentary complexity, and contain evidence of past climates and environments, including fossil bones, burned plant macrofossils, and invertebrate microfossils. Here, we show that it is critical to view the observations, data, and conclusions of scientific studies conducted in the canyon within this larger context so that localized facets of the spatially and temporally extensive alluvial deposits are not misinterpreted or misrepresented. By improving the baseline understanding of processes and drivers of sediment accumulation in Arlington Canyon, we hope to offer a solid foundation and better underpinning for future archeological, paleontological, and geochemical studies here and throughout the northern Channel Islands. The Charnath Khola is a large river crossing the Himalayan thrust system in the region devastated by the great M8.3 1934 Bihar‐Nepal earthquake. Fluvial terraces are abandoned along the river and at the base of a ~20‐m high cumulative thrust escarpment. A trench across the fault scarp exposed Siwalik mudstone/siltstone overthrusting Quaternary units and three colluvial wedges interfingered with fluvial sands. The 85 accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon dates, from detrital charcoals sampled in the trench, a river cut and river terraces, constrain the timing of the sedimentary processes following the last two major earthquakes, in 1934 and 1255 CE. Although several samples straddle the main earthquake horizon, associating it with the 1934 earthquake, based solely on radiocarbon ages, remains challenging. The 49 detrital charcoal ages found in the pre‐earthquake and postearthquake units fall between 65 and 225 BP, a period with a flat calibration curve. Many of these radiocarbon ages are suspected to include a part due to inbuilt time (i.e., age of the wood at the time of burning), transport time, and reworking processes, which are difficult to resolve. Considering these ages at their face value could lead to dates older than the actual earthquake dates. We suggest that a part of this chronological bias is also related to a local postseismic aggradation pulse of 4 to 5 m of sediments, which is documented in the trench and terraces. This fluvial sequence, hiding the most recent surface rupture, is likely related to landslide‐sediment deposition triggered by the 1934 Bihar‐Nepal earthquake. Abstract The arrival of Europeans in the New World, and the rapid deforestation for agriculture and settlement that shortly followed, resulted in large and rapid increases in soil erosion and sediment aggradation. In Australia, as in parts of North America and other New World sites, this event dates to the last several centuries of the Common Era, a period for which we have surprisingly little historical or scientific data capable of informing debates on the impact of European colonisation on soils and erosion. These research themes and debates were central to the work of Karl Butzer, who undertook field and archival research in Australia to test existing ideas of the timing and magnitude of landscape response to colonisation. In this paper, the work and impact of Butzer in Australia is reviewed as part of ongoing scholarship on the impact of colonisation on landscapes to which Butzer contributed (Butzer and Helgren, 2005). Geomorphic records of soil erosion and historical accounts of land use and impact from eastern Australia show that European settlement, land clearing, and agriculture resulted in rapid, and often severe, increases in erosion in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, mirroring the experience of anthropogenic soil loss experienced in other parts of the world. It is postulated that the geomorphic response to European settlement in Australia is more complex than researchers have previously noted that, in some contexts, continues to influence catchment processes decades and centuries after colonisation.
