The empirical likelihood is a powerful nonparametric tool, that emulates its parametric counterpart -- the parametric likelihood -- preserving many of its large-sample properties. This article tackles the problem of assessing the discriminatory power of three-class diagnostic tests from an empirical likelihood perspective. In particular, we concentrate on interval estimation in a three-class ROC analysis, where a variety of inferential tasks could be of interest. We present novel theoretical results and tailored techniques studied to efficiently solve some of such tasks. Extensive simulation experiments are provided in a supporting role, with our novel proposals compared to existing competitors, when possible. It emerges that our new proposals are extremely flexible, being able to compete with contestants and being the most suited to accommodating flexible distributions for target populations. We illustrate the application of the novel proposals with a real data example. The article ends with a discussion and a presentation of some directions for future research.

In this paper, we propose a mean score equation-based approach to estimate the the volume under the receiving operating characteristic (ROC) surface (VUS) of a diagnostic test, under nonignorable (NI) verification bias. The proposed approach involves a parametric regression model for the verification process, which accommodates for possible NI missingness in the disease status of sample subjects, and may use instrumental variables, which help avoid possible identifiability problems. In order to solve the mean score equation derived by the chosen verification model, we preliminarily need to estimate the parameters of a model for the disease process, but its specification is required only for verified subjects under study. Then, by using the estimated verification and disease probabilities, we obtain four verification bias-corrected VUS estimators, which are alternative to those recently proposed by To Duc et al. (2019), based on a full likelihood approach. Consistency and asymptotic normality of the new estimators are established. Simulation experiments are conducted to evaluate their finite sample performances, and an application to a dataset from a research on epithelial ovarian cancer is presented.

The volume under the receiver operating characteristic surface (VUS) is useful for measuring the overall accuracy of a diagnostic test when the possible disease status belongs to one of three ordered categories. In medical studies, the VUS of a new test is typically estimated through a sample of measurements obtained by some suitable sample of patients. However, in many cases, only a subset of such patients has the true disease status assessed by a gold standard test. In this paper, for a continuous-scale diagnostic test, we propose four estimators of the VUS which accommodate for nonignorable missingness of the disease status. The estimators are based on a parametric model which jointly describes both the disease and the verification process. Identifiability of the model is discussed. Consistency and asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators are shown, and variance estimation is discussed. The finite-sample behavior is investigated by means of simulation experiments. Verification bias is a well known problem when the predictive ability of a diagnostic test has to be evaluated. In this paper, we discuss how to assess the accuracy of continuous-scale diagnostic tests in the presence of verification bias, when a three-class disease status is considered. In particular, we propose a fully nonparametric verification bias-corrected estimator of the ROC surface. Our approach is based on nearest-neighbor imputation and adopts generic smooth regression models for both the disease and the verification processes. Consistency and asymptotic normality of the proposed estimator are proved and its finite sample behavior is investigated by means of several Monte Carlo simulation studies. Verification bias is a well-known problem that may occur in the evaluation of predictive ability of diagnostic tests. When a binary disease status is considered, various solutions can be found in the literature to correct inference based on usual measures of test accuracy, such as the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve or the area underneath. Evaluation of the predictive ability of continuous diagnostic tests in the presence of verification bias for a three-class disease status is here discussed. In particular, several verification bias-corrected estimators of the ROC surface and of the volume underneath are proposed. Consistency and asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators are established and their finite sample behavior is investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulation studies. Two illustrations are also given.
