Abstract

We present data from the Apache Point Observatory Lunar Laser-ranging Operation (APOLLO) covering the 15-year span from April 2006 through the end of 2020. APOLLO measures the earth-moon separation by recording the round-trip travel time of photons from the Apache Point Observatory to five retro-reflector arrays on the moon. The APOLLO data set, combined with the 50-year archive of measurements from other lunar laser ranging (LLR) stations, can be used to probe fundamental physics such as gravity and Lorentz symmetry, as well as properties of the moon itself. We show that range measurements performed by APOLLO since 2006 have a median nightly accuracy of 1.7 mm, which is significantly better than other LLR stations., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

High-energy physics is primarily concerned with uncovering the laws and principles that govern nature at the fundamental level. Research in this field usually relies on probing the boundaries of established physics, an undertaking typically associated with extreme energy and distance scales. It is therefore unsurprising that particle physics has traditionally been dominated by large-scale experimental methods often involving high energies, such as colliders and storage rings, cosmological and astrophysical observations, large-volume detector systems, etc. However, high-sensitivity measurements in smaller experiments, often performed at lower energies, are presently experiencing a surge in importance for particle physics for at least two reasons. First, they exploit synergies to adjacent areas of physics with recent advances in experimental techniques and technology. Together with intensified phenomenological explorations, these advances have led to the realization that challenges associated with weak couplings or the expected suppression factors for new physics can be overcome with such methods while maintaining a large degree of experimental control. Second, many of these measurements broaden the range of particle-physics phenomena and observables relative to the above set of more conventional methodologies. Combining such measurements with the conventional efforts above therefore casts both a wider and tighter net for possible effects originating from physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). This paper argues that this assessment points at a growing impact of such methods and measurements on high-energy physics, and therefore warrants direct support as particle-physics research. Leveraging the recent rapid progress and bright outlook associated with such studies for high-energy physics, could yield high returns, but requires substantial and sustained efforts by funding agencies., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021, 55 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The precise calibration of the strain readout of the LIGO gravitational wave observatories is paramount to the accurate interpretation of gravitational wave events. This calibration is traditionally done by imparting a known force on the test masses of the observatory via radiation pressure. Here we describe the implementation of an alternative calibration scheme: the Newtonian Calibrator. This system uses a rotor consisting of both quadrupole and hexapole mass distributions to apply a time-varying gravitational force on one of the observatory's test masses. The force produced by this rotor can be predicted to $<1\%$ relative uncertainty and is well-resolved in the readout of the observatory. This system currently acts as a cross-check of the existing absolute calibration system.

Abstract

We analyzed an 6.7-year span of data from a rotating torsion-pendulum containing $\approx 10^{23}$ polarized electrons to search for the "wind" arising from ultralight, axionlike dark matter with masses between $10^{-23}$ and $10^{-18}$ eV/c$^2$. Over most of this range we obtain a 95\% confidence limit $F_{\rm a}/C_{\rm e} \geq 1 \times 10^{15}$ eV on the axionlike decay constant., Comment: Submitted December 20th, 2018 to PRL; Revised exclusion figure to show stellar and other experimental constraints
