A new perovskite KOsO3 has been stabilized under high-pressure and high temperature conditions. It is cubic at 500 K (Pm-3m) and undergoes subsequent phase transitions to tetragonal at 320 K (P4/mmm) and rhombohedral (R-3m) at 230 K as shown from refining synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SXRD) data. The larger orbital overlap integral and the extended wavefunction of 5d electrons in the perovskite KOsO3 allow to explore physics from the regime where Mott and Hund's rule couplings dominate to the state where the multiple interactions are on equal footing. We demonstrate an exotic magnetic ordering phase found by neutron powder diffraction along with physical properties via a suite of measurements including magnetic and transport properties, differential scanning calorimetry, and specific heat, which provide comprehensive information for a system at the crossover from localized to itinerant electronic behavior.

We report a phenomenological magneto-structural model based on competing free-energy terms that couple either polar or chiral distortions in cubic quadruple perovskites, depending on the global direction of magnetic moments. The model naturally explains why some compounds in this material system host magnetically-induced ferroelectricity at low temperature, while others such as CaMn$_3$(Cr$_3$Mn)O$_{12}$, which we characterise experimentally, do not. Importantly, our results suggest a new approach towards developing an applied multiferroic functionality, and can be generalised to other multi-sublattice systems where the magnetic interaction between sublattices is prohibited by spatial inversion., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We report on the microwave, terahertz (THz), infrared and Raman spectroscopic studies of $BiMn_{7}O_{12}$ ceramics, shedding more light into the nature of two structural phase transitions and their possible relation with ferroelectricity in this compound. We observed a softening of one polar phonon in the THz range on cooling towards 460 and 300 K, i.e., temperatures at which $BiMn_{7}O_{12}$ undergoes subsequent structural phase transitions from monoclinic $\textit{I2/m}$ to polar monoclinic $\textit{Im}$ and triclinic $\textit{P1}$ phases. The soft phonon causes dielectric anomalies typical for displacive ferroelectric phase transitions. Microwave measurements performed at 5.8 GHz up to 400 K qualitatively confirmed not only the dielectric anomaly at 300 K, but also revealed two other weak dielectric anomalies near the magnetic phase transitions at 60 K and 28 K. This evidences the multiferroic nature of the low-temperature phases, although the relatively high conductivity in the kHz and Hz spectral range prevented us from directly measuring the permittivity and ferroelectric polarization. Some Raman modes sense the magnetic phase transitions occurring near 60 and 25 K, showing that spin-phonon coupling is relevant in this compound and in this temperature range. The deviation of the Mn-O stretching mode frequency from the anharmonic temperature behavior was successfully explained by the spin correlation function calculated from the magnetic contribution to the specific heat.

A combination of competing exchange interactions and substitutional disorder gives rise to magnetic inhomogeneities in the [Y$_{2-x}$Mn$_x$]MnMnMn$_4$O$_{12}$ $x = 0.23$ and $x = 0.16$ quadruple perovskite manganites. Our neutron powder scattering measurements show that both the $x = 0.23$ and $x = 0.16$ samples separate into two distinct magnetic phases; below T$_{1}$ = 120 $\pm$ 10 K the system undergoes a transition from a paramagnetic phase to a phase characterised by short range antiferromagnetic clusters contained in a paramagnetic matrix, and below T$_{2}$ $\sim$ 65 K, the system is composed of well correlated long range collinear ferrimagnetic order, punctuated by short range antiferromagnetic clusters. A sharp increase in the antiferromagnetic phase fraction is observed below $\sim$ 33 K, concomitant with a decrease in the ferrimagnetic phase fraction. Our results demonstrate that the theoretically proposed AFM phase is stabilised in the [Y$_{2-x}$Mn$_x$]MnMnMn$_4$O$_{12}$ manganites in the presence of dominant B-B exchange interactions, as predicted., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Type-II multiferroics, where spin interactions induce a ferroelectric polarization, are interesting for new device functionalities due to large magnetoelectric coupling. We report on a new type of multiferroicity in the quadruple-perovskite $\text{BiMn}_{\text{3}}\text{Cr}_{\text{4}}\text{O}_{\text{12}}$, where an antiferromagnetic phase is induced by the structural change at the ferroelectric phase transition. The displacive nature of the ferroelectric phase transition at 125 K, with a crossover to an order-disorder mechanism, is evidenced by a polar soft phonon in the THz range and a central mode. Dielectric and pyroelectric studies show that the ferroelectric critical temperature corresponds to the previously reported N\'eel temperature of the $\text{Cr}^{\text{3+}}$ spins. An increase in ferroelectric polarization is observed below 48 K, coinciding with the N\'eel temperature of the $\text{Mn}^{\text{3+}}$ spins. This increase in polarization is attributed to an enhanced magnetoelectric coupling, as no change in the crystal symmetry below 48 K is detected from infrared and Raman spectra.

Combined studies on fluorescence quantum yield in coenzymes NADH and FAD in water-methanol, water-ethanol and water-propylene glycol mixtures and on time-resolved fluorescence of the same molecules under excitation at 450 and 355~nm by means of the TCSPC method have been carried out. The dependence of quantum yield in NADH on alcohol concentration was found to be similar in methanol and ethanol and different from that in propylene glycol. The behavior of quantum yield in FAD was found to be almost independent of the type of alcohol and exhibited a dramatic 5--6 times increase with alcohol concentration. A model describing molecular excited state relaxation dynamics in pico- and nanosecond time domain was developed on the basis on the quantum mechanical theory and used for analysis of the experimental results. In particular, the model provided a new insight into the nature of the Decay Associated Spectra (DAS) phenomenon. The analysis of the role of pico- and nanosecond quenching in NADH suggested that the picosecond decay in methanol and ethanol likely does not occur through electron transfer in the stacking configuration of the nicotinamide and adenine moieties, but through other mechanisms. However in propylene glycol the picosecond quenching in NADH depended strongly on propylene glycol concentration and sharp increase of the measured quantum yield was associated with the contribution of both picosecond and nanosecond quenching mechanisms. The picosecond quenching to FAD was found to depend significantly on the any alcohol concentration suggesting that it gives a profound contribution to the rise of the measured quantum yield with alcohol concentration. This conclusion supports the established mechanism of the fluorescence quenching in FAD through electron transfer reaction in the $\pi$-stacked conformation between isoalloxazine and adenine moieties., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Structural behaviour of PbMn$_{7}$O$_{12}$ has been studied by high resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. This material belongs to a family of quadruple perovskite manganites that exhibit an incommensurate structural modulation associated with an orbital density wave. It has been found that the structural modulation in PbMn$_{7}$O$_{12}$ onsets at 294 K with the incommensurate propagation vector $\mathbf{k}_s=(0,0,\sim2.08)$. At 110 K another structural transition takes place where the propagation vector suddenly drops down to a \emph{quasi}-commensurate value $\mathbf{k}_s=(0,0,2.0060(6))$. The \emph{quasi}-commensurate phase is stable in the temperature range of 40K - 110 K, and below 40 K the propagation vector jumps back to the incommensurate value $\mathbf{k}_s=(0,0,\sim2.06)$. Both low temperature structural transitions are strongly first order with large thermal hysteresis. The orbital density wave in the \emph{quasi}-commensurate phase has been found to be substantially suppressed in comparison with the incommensurate phases, which naturally explains unusual magnetic behaviour recently reported for this perovskite. Analysis of the refined structural parameters revealed that that the presence of the \emph{quasi}-commensurate phase is likely to be associated with a competition between the Pb$^{2+}$ lone electron pair and Mn$^{3+}$ Jahn-Teller instabilities.

Structural properties of CuAl$_{2}$O$_{4}$, which was recently argued to show unusual suppression of the Jahn-Teller distortions by the spin-orbit coupling, are investigated under pressures up to 6 GPa. Analysis of X-ray powder diffraction experiments shows that CuAl$_{2}$O$_{4}$ gets unstable and decomposes onto CuO and Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ at pressures $\sim$ 6 GPa and temperature $\sim$ 1000 K. This finding is complemented by the DFT+U+SOC calculations, which demonstrate that this instability is partially driven by a (relatively) large compressibility of strongly Jahn-Teller distorted CuO., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

Powder neutron diffraction experiments have been employed to establish the effects of site-selective magnetic dilution in the Sm2MnMnMn4-x Tix O12 A-site columnar ordered quadruple perovskite manganites (x = 1, x = 2 and x = 3). We show that in all three compositions the Mn ions adopt a collinear ferrimagnetic structure below 27 K, 62 K and 34 K, respectively. An unexpected increase in the ordering temperature was observed between the x = 1 and x = 2 samples, which indicates a considerable departure from mean field behaviour. This result is corroborated by large reductions in the theoretical ground state magnetic moments observed across the series, which indicate the presence of spin fluctuations and or disorder. We show that long range magnetic order in the x = 3 sample, which occurs below the percolation threshold for B-B exchange, can only be understood to arise if magnetic order in Sm2MnMnMn4-xTixO12 is mediated via both A-B and B-B exchange, hence confirming the importance of A-B exchange interactions in these materials. Finally we show that site-selective magnetic dilution enables the tuning of a ferrimagnetic compensation point and the introduction of temperature-induced magnetization reversal., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Long-range ordering of magnetic dipoles in bulk materials gives rise to a broad range of magnetic structures, from simple collinear ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, to complex magnetic helicoidal textures stabilized by competing exchange interactions. In contrast, in the context of dipolar order in dielectric crystals, only parallel (ferroelectric) and antiparallel (antiferroelectric) collinear alignments of electric dipoles are typically considered. Here, we report an observation of incommensurate helical ordering of electric dipoles by light hole-doping of the quadruple perovskite BiMn7O12. In analogy with magnetism, the electric dipole helicoidal texture is also stabilized by competing instabilities. Specifically, orbital ordering and lone electron pair stereochemical activity compete, giving rise to phase transitions from a non-chiral cubic structure, to an incommensurate electric dipole and orbital helix, via an intermediate density wave.

We derive the plage area evolution over the last 12 solar cycles employing data from all Ca II K archives available publicly in digital form known to us, including several as yet unexplored Ca II K archives. We analyse more than 290,000 full-disc Ca II K observations from 43 datasets spanning the period 1892-2019. All images were consistently processed with an automatic procedure that performs the photometric calibration (if needed) and the limb-darkening compensation. The processing also accounts for artefacts plaguing many of the images, including some very specific artefacts such as bright arcs found in Kyoto and Yerkes data. We have produced a plage area time-series from each analysed dataset. We found that the differences between the plage areas derived from individual archives are mainly due to the differences in the central wavelength and the bandpass used to acquire the data at the various sites. We have empirically cross-calibrated and combined the results obtained from each dataset to produce a composite series of plage areas. "Backbone" series are used to bridge all the series together. We have also shown that the selection of the backbone series has little effect on the final plage area composite. We have quantified the uncertainty of determining the plage areas with our processing due to shifts in the central wavelength and found it to be less than 0.01 in fraction of the solar disc for the average conditions found on historical data. We also found the variable seeing conditions during the observations to slightly increase the plage areas during activity maxima. We provide the so far most complete time series of plage areas based on corrected and calibrated historical and modern Ca II K images. Consistent plage areas are now available on 88% of all days from 1892 onwards and on 98% from 1907 onwards., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We study the perception of COVID-2019 epidemic in Polish society using quantitative analysis of its digital footprints on the Internet (on Twitter, Google, YouTube, Wikipedia and electronic media represented by Event Registry) from January 2020 to 12.03.2020 (before and after official introduction to Poland on 04.03.2020). To this end we utilize data mining, social network analysis, natural language processing techniques. Each examined internet platform was analyzed for representativeness and composition of the target group. We identified three temporal major cluster of the interest before disease introduction on the topic COVID-2019: China- and Italy-related peaks on all platforms, as well as a peak on social media related to the recent special law on combating COVID-2019. Besides, there was a peak in interest on the day of officially confirmed introduction as well as an exponential increase of interest when the Polish government declared war against disease with a massive mitigation program. From sociolingistic perspective, we found that concepts and issues of threat, fear and prevention prevailed before introduction. After introduction, practical concepts about disease and epidemic dominate. We have found out that Twitter reflected the structural division of the Polish political sphere. We were able to identify clear communities of governing party, mainstream oppostition and protestant group and potential sources of misinformation. We have also detected bluring boundaries between comminities after disease introduction.

Spin-reorientation phase transitions that involve the rotation of a crystal$'$s magnetization have been well characterized in distorted-perovskite oxides such as the orthoferrites. In these systems spin reorientation occurs due to competing rare-earth and transition metal anisotropies coupled via $f$-$d$ exchange. Here, we demonstrate an alternative paradigm for spin reorientation in distorted perovskites. We show that the $R_2\mathrm{CuMnMn_4O_{12}}$ (R = Y or Dy) triple A-site columnar-ordered quadruple perovskites have three ordered magnetic phases and up to two spin-reorientation phase transitions. Unlike the spin-reorientation phenomena in other distorted perovskites, these transitions are independent of rare-earth magnetism, but are instead driven by an instability towards antiferromagnetic spin canting likely originating in frustrated Heisenberg exchange interactions, and the competition between Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and single-ion anisotropies., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Polycrystalline Sr$_3$OsO$_6$, which is an ordered double-perovskite insulator, is synthesized via solid-state reaction under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions of 1200 $^\circ$C and 6 GPa. The synthesis enables us to conduct a comparative study of the bulk form of Sr$_3$OsO$_6$ toward revealing the driving mechanism of 1000 K ferromagnetism, which has recently been discovered for epitaxially grown Sr$_3$OsO$_6$ films. Unlike the film, the bulk is dominated by antiferromagnetism rather than ferromagnetism. Therefore, robust ferromagnetic order appears only when Sr$_3$OsO$_6$ is under the influence of interfaces. A specific heat capacity of 39.6(9) 10$^{-3}$ J mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ is found at low temperatures ($<$17 K). This value is remarkably high, suggesting the presence of possible fermionic-like excitations at the magnetic ground state. Although the bulk and film forms of Sr$_3$OsO$_6$ share the same lattice basis and electrically insulating state, the magnetism is entirely different between them.
