So far, six Fannia species have been discovered in Korea. During a taxonomic survey of this genus, the authors found two newly recorded species for the first time in Korea: F. barbata (Stein, 1892) and F. japonica Nishida, 1974. Diagnoses, illustrations, and keys to the Korean species are provided.

The genus Fannia is the most representative of the Fannidae family of true flies with worldwide distribution. Some species are attracted to decomposing materials and live vertebrate animals, which makes them important in forensics, medical and veterinary fields. However, identifying Fannia species can be difficult due to the high similarity in the external morphology of females and limited descriptions and morphological keys. Herein, molecular markers could provide a complementary tool for species identification. However, molecular identification has still limited application since databases contain few data for neotropical species of Fannia. This study assessed the potential of two molecular markers, the COI-3' region and internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2), to differentiate 10 putative species of the genus Fannia from Colombia using distance-based and tree-based approaches. The partial ITS2 and/or COI-3' regions allowed molecular diagnosis of six species, while pairs of species Fannia colazorrensis + F. dodgei and F. laclara + F. aburrae are conflicting. Although these results might suggest that conflicting pair species are conspecific, consistent morphological differences between males do not support this hypothesis. The lack of differentiation at the nuclear and mitochondrial molecular markers for the conflicting species may be due to incomplete evolutionary lineage separation, hybridization, or introgression events. In addition, sexual selection on male morphological traits before species-specific differences in molecular markers emerge may partially explain the results. Our study provides a valuable dataset to identify and confirm some Fannia species molecularly. Further, they could be used to associate females and immature stages with their conspecifics as a baseline to deep into their biology, ecology, distribution and potential applications in forensic and medico-veterinary entomology., (© 2024 Royal Entomological Society.)

The little house fly, Fannia canicularis (L.) (Diptera: Fanniidae), is a significant pest associated with livestock and animal systems worldwide. This species commonly develops in poultry production systems. The males of this species are a nuisance to people because they form mating swarms in enclosed spaces. The pest status of F. canicularis has not lessened since it was identified as a critical arthropod pest of veterinary importance over 50 yr ago. During this period, there has been little research progress to control this pest, especially when compared with other filth fly species. This article reviews the biology, distribution, pest status (including nuisance and pathogen transmission risk), monitoring, and control techniques, and identifies knowledge gaps for F. canicularis.

Fannia canicularis (Linnaeus, 1761) is a species from the family Fanniidae. In this study, we sequenced and analyzed the complete mitochondrial genome of F. canicularis for the first time. The circular mitogenome is 15,826 bp in length, and includes 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and a non-coding control region. The family Fanniidae formed a monophyletic clade in the phylogenetic tree based on 13 concatenated PCGs, sister to three other families in Diptera.

Mordovia is a lowland region of Russia located 400–500 km South-East-East of Moscow. There were very few published data on the Mordovian fauna of the Diptera families considered in this paper. The present work is mostly based upon material collected during the field season 2020. Now we offer a list of Mordovian fauna which includes 35 species of Sciomyzidae, 23 Fanniidae and 141 Muscidae, a total of 199 species, 178 of which are first recorded for Mordovia. New synonym is offered: Pherbellia brunnipes Meigen, 1838 = P. stackelbergi Elberg, 1965, syn. nov.

The Fannidae includes over 400 described species, mainly known from the Holarctic Region. The number of species in the Oriental Region are underestimated. The Fannia fuscinata-group was established by Wang et al. in 2011, consisting of nine species at present.A new species of the genus Fannia (Diptera, Fanniidae) is described from Yunnan, part of the Oriental Region in China, namely Fannia menglaensis sp. nov. The detailed description, photographs and drawings of adults and male terminalia of F. menglaensis sp. nov. are provided. All specimens are preserved in the Museum of Beijing Forestry University.

This is our second article dedicated to the fauna of Fanniidae and Muscidae of Belarus. In the first article (Makovetskaya, Vikhrev 2019), we summarized the literature data and studied the materials of museum collections of Belarus and Russia. The present work is based upon material collected during the field season of 2019. Now we offer an extended list of Fanniidae and Muscidae of Belarus, which includes 175 species. 50 species are recorded for the first time in Belarus (these are 7 species of Fanniidae and 44 of Muscidae).

The present study examines whether the chaetotaxy of the costal vein in the calyptrate families Fanniidae and Muscidae deserves more attention in phylogenetic and taxonomic contexts. An overview of the macrotrichia and their arrangement on wing vein C is given. Special attention is given to the presence/absence of ventral and dorsal setulae on the costal sectors CS1‒3. This is described as one variable character (A) with nine states (A0‒A8). Specimens of both sexes (when possible) of each species belonging to 4 of a total of 5 fanniid genera and 115 of a total of 179 muscid genus-group taxa were examined and scored for character A. It was found that the presumed ancestral state of character A differs between the two families. It is further shown that the main transformational trend in character A in Muscidae has been bi-directional, leading either to the loss of ventral setulae or the gain of dorsal setulae. The utility of character A in the Fanniidae and Muscidae is many-sided and involves taxa ranging from species to family. It is concluded that character A and other aspects of costal chaetotaxy deserve more attention in morphology-based studies of calyptrate flies.

Two new synonymies are proposed: Fannia fasciculata Loew, 1873 = F. baihualingensis Yan, Xu, Wang & Zhang, 2019, syn. nov.; Fannia xiaoi Fan, 2000 = F. fani Wang & Wu, 2017, syn. nov. F. fasciculata is supposed to be originated from S-E Palaearctic, though it was described from Europe. Specimens previously identified as F. fani are regarded as a case of intersex males of F. xiaoi. Taxonomy and distribution of both considered species are discussed and specified. F. fasciculata and F. xiaoi were newly recorded for Russia.

Application of available keys to European Fanniidae did not facilitate unequivocal species identification for third instar larvae and females of Fannia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 collected during a study of arthropod succession on pig carrion. To link these samples to known species, we took the advantage of molecular identification methods and compared newly obtained cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) barcode sequences against sequences deposited in reference databases. As an outcome of the results obtained, we describe for the first time a third instar larva of Fannia nigra Malloch, 1910 and Fannia pallitibia (Rondani, 1866) and a female of Fannia collini d’Assis-Fonseca, 1966. We provide combinations of characters allowing for discrimination of described insects from other Fanniidae. We provide an update for the key by Rozkošný et al. 1997, which allows differentiation between females of F. collini and other species of Fanniidae. Additionally, we provide a case of a human cadaver discovered in Southern Poland and insect fauna associated with it as the first report of F. nigra larvae developing on a human body.

A new species of the genus Fannia (Diptera, Fanniidae) is described from Yunnan, China, namely Fannia baihualingensis sp. nov. The male habitus as well as terminalia are documented with focus-stacked photographs. A detailed comparison of new species with related species is provided.

The abdominal and pregenital segments and the genitalia were studied in males of Fannia subpellucens (Zetterstedt, 1845), Fannia canicularis (Linnaeus, 1761) and Fannia incisurata (Zetterstedt, 1838). In comparison with the remaining members of the muscoid grade, in addition to the symmetry of the pregenital segments, significant reductions of the sclerites and musculature of the male terminalia have been observed in Fanniidae. The muscular structure of pregenital segments confirms that the fused pregenital ring is syntergosternite VI + VII + VIII. Symmetry and fusion, as well as the lower number of the sclerites and muscles of the pregenital segments and male genitalia of the Fanniidae, can be considered apomorphic character states. The presence of the lateral bacilliform sclerite, as well as the presence and position of the epandrial muscles M 26, three pairs of muscles M 19 and paired muscles M 18, can be considered as a plesiomorphic character state of the Fanniidae. The structure of the sclerites and muscles of the male abdominal segments and terminalia place the Fanniidae at the base of the muscoid grade and Oestroidea, as has been confirmed by recent molecular studies.

Fannia Robineau-Desvoidy is found in all biogeographic regions. The genus contains approximately 360 known species, 18 of which have been recorded from Mexico. Herein, we describe six new species in the Fannia pretiosa-group, redescribe Fannia gilvitarsis Chillcott, and provide diagnosis, habitus images, drawings of the male terminalia, and an identification key for all species of the group that occur in Mexico. All Fannia pretiosa-group species from Mexico share a similar morphology of the mid tibia, hind femur, and male terminalia.

Studies were conducted in the temperate forests of the European part of Russia (territory of the Republic of Mordovia). Beer traps with bait made of beer and sugar were used for the studies. Three plots were selected for the study, which differed in the composition of plants at the edges, adjacent open ecosystems and types of forest ecosystems. The forest was adjacent to this open ecosystem and there was no transition zone of shrubs. Eight traps were used in each plot (1,2 - edge-below, 3,4 - edge-above, 5,6 - forest interior-below, 7,8 - forest interiorabove). They were located 1.5 m (further named as "below" traps) and 7.5 m (further named as "above" traps) from the ground level. During the experiments, 52306 specimens from 28 families of Diptera were captured. In terms of total abundance, representatives of 25 families were present in the lower traps and species from 27 families were present in the upper traps. The general pattern was the highest abundance of Diptera at the edges in all plots. Nine families (Tipulidae, Anisopodidae, Lonchaeidae, Milichiidae, Drosophilidae, Anthomyiidae, Fanniidae, Muscidae, Calliphoridae) accounted for 93.3% of all Diptera abundance in all plots. The families Tipulidae, and Drosophilidae were the most abundant in lower traps within forest ecosystems. The families Lonchaeidae, Milichiidae, Anthomyiidae, Fanniidae, and Muscidae were most abundant in upper traps at the edges of forests. A historical review of the Fannia carbonaria-group is provided and three new species are described from China: F. fani Wang & Wu, sp. n., F. nitidiventris Wang & Zhang, sp. n. and F. submaculata Wang & Zhao, sp. n.. One species, Fannia norvegica Ringdahl, 1934, is recorded for the first time from China. Illustrations of male terminalia of these four species and a taxonomic key to the males of known species in the group are given. The F. carbonaria-group now includes 30 species distributed in the Holarctic Region and northern part of the Oriental Region.

Our knowledge on many necrophilous dipterans was limited for a long time mainly due to taxonomic issues. Therefore, findings on the sex-related associations with pig carcasses in Dryomyzidae, Fanniidae, Muscidae, and Piophilidae are presented. Moreover, the effectiveness of pitfall traps and sweep nets in fly sampling were compared, since the correct method of collecting insects is critical for the development and application of entomological tools for forensic purposes. The trapped numbers of all species differed significantly in respect to both sexes. The sex ratios were strongly female-biased in most species of Muscidae and in Fanniidae. More females were also collected in Piophilidae, but the proportion of males was higher when compared to muscids. Within Dryomyzidae, the sex ratio differed according to species. Only Dryomyza flaveola (Fabricius, 1794) (Diptera: Dryomyzidae) and Muscina pascuorum (Meigen, 1826) (Diptera: Muscidae) had male-biased sex ratios. Differences in residency patterns between sexes in Stearibia nigriceps (Meigen, 1826) (Diptera: Piophilidae), Liopiophila varipes (Meigen, 1830) (Diptera: Piophilidae), and D. flaveola were statistically insignificant. All studied species were recorded for each sampling method. The effect of the sampling method on the number of individuals was statistically significant for all dipterans but Piophilidae. Pitfall traps outcompeted the aerial sweep net in representing Dryomyzidae and Muscidae, whereas both methods were almost equally effective in the collection of Piophilidae. A varied effectiveness of sampling methods was observed in Fanniidae. The sampling method significantly affected the determination of the appearance time of flies on carcasses, but the effect of species and sampling method was insignificant. Os dípteros necrófagos utilizam matéria orgânica em decomposição como fonte proteica em ao menos uma fase de sua vida. Deste modo o conhecimento taxonômico dessa fauna se torna importante para estudos forense, sanitário e médico. Os dípteros das famílias Calliphoridae, Muscidae e Fanniidae possuem espécies necrófagas associadas ao ambiente humano, estando entre os insetos de maior destaque nesse aspecto e até então nunca foram estudados na cidade de Feira de Santana, Bahia. O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar um levantamento da fauna de dípteros necrófagos das famílias Calliphoridae, Muscidae e Fanniidae de Feira de Santana, Bahia. Para isso, foram realizadas coletas mensais ao longo de um ano em três áreas da cidade com um total de cinco armadilhas iscadas (com 24 horas de exposição) por área, resultando em um subconjunto de 60 armadilhas/área e um total de 180 amostras. Foram coletados 4.818 dípteros, pertencentes a 20 espécies das três famílias estudadas: Calliphoridae (seis espécies), Fanniidae (três espécies) e Muscidae (11 espécies). A maior abundância das famílias ocorreu no outono e a menor no verão. Observou-se que treze das vinte espécies coletadas, possuem interesse forense e sanitário descritos na literatura. Taxonomic studies in necrphagous Diptera is relevant because of its importance for forensic, health and medical purposes, since they feed in decaying organic matter as protein source, at least in one stage of their lives. Synantropic Diptera, such us some species of Calliphoridae, Muscidae and Fannidae had not been studied in Feira de Santana, BA. The aim of this study was to do an inventory of necrophagous Diptera belonging to the families cited above. Five baited traps (24 hours of exposure) were placed in three sites in the town, once a month, resulting in a subset of 60 traps per site and a total of 180 samples. A total of 4.818 specimens were collected, belonging to 20 species: Calliphoridae (six species), Fannidae (three species) and Muscidae (11 species). The abundance of synantropic Diptera showed seasonality being the fall the season with higher abundance while in the summer the abundance was significant lower. Thirteen out of the twenty species collected were cited in the literature as being of forensic importance.
