Delamination is unavoidable during the fabrication or utilisation of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) components. Due to the high sensitivity of the A0 mode for detecting delamination, nonlinear frequency mixing of counter-propagating A0-S0 mode Lamb waves was numerically and experimentally investigated in the CFRP composite plate. Considering the nonlinear effect caused by the heterogeneous structure of CFRP composite, the counter-propagation of primary Lamb waves can minimise the nonlinear interaction induced by material nonlinearity compared to the one-way propagation. Numerically, the nonlinear interaction between primary Lamb waves and delamination was investigated. Moreover, delaminations with different sizes, depths, and interface gaps were explored. It was found that the acoustic nonlinear parameter grows with expanding delamination size and diminishes with increasing delamination depth and interface gap. Furthermore, the nonlinear frequency mixing of counter-propagating A0-S0 mode Lamb wave was experimentally performed. The nonlinear frequency mixing effect induced by the delamination can be maximally isolated from the material nonlinearity. Consequently, the technique based on the nonlinear frequency mixing of counter-propagating A0-S0 mode Lamb waves provides a potential and effective method to detect defects in the composite plate with heterogeneous structures. The nonlinear Lamb waves are sensitive to closed micro cracks and have a great potential for the detection of damage to prevent the catastrophic failure of entire structure. A five-stage closed micro crack localisation method based on time of flight (ToF) of the second harmonic Lamb waves is proposed in this research. The first step is frequency analysis of the received signals to ensure the generation of second harmonic wave. The second step is to extract second harmonic wave component in frequency range. The third step is to obtain wave signals in time domain. The fourth step is to extract ToF of second harmonic wave. The fifth step is to locate damage with ToFs. The method provides an effective strategy based on wavelet transform to extract the second harmonic Lamb waves from the dynamic response signals for the detection of closed micro crack. Illumination system, as one of the main parts of lithography, enables to supply high uniformity intensity distribution on the mask, controls exposure dose and creates off-axis illumination (OAI) modes, which enhance the resolution and enlarge depth of focus of lithography. Quartz crystals exhibit intrinsic birefringence in the x-direction, based on which, quartz crystal polarization device is made, and the polarization state of beam can be controlled by the device. In the lithography machine's lighting system, the resolution ratio and imaging quality can be further improved by the polarization device with off-axis illumination modes assisted. Due to the limitations of traditional quartz crystal growth process and crystal automorphism, largediameter quartz wave plate (diameter above 50 mm) which the polarization device need was always a challenge. In this study, optimized framework seed method was applied to eliminate heritable etch channel defects. Raw material ratio was optimized for further reduce the content of trace elements such as Al3+, and Na+,, etc. Temperature-rising curve was controlled to realize lattice matching on the surface of quartz seed, and weaken inhomogeneous in the epitaxial region of quartz crystal. The parameters (such as temperature, pressure, mineralizer and its concentration, opening rate of throttle flap, et al.) were systematically adjusted for quartz growth. Thereby a high transmittance quartz single crystal suitable for 193 nm wavelength was successfully synthesized and a quartz wave plate blank with maximum size of Φ160 mm was processed, which is the largest size quartz optical wave plate blank reported. Optical properties such as trace element content, internal transmittance, birefringence performance, optical uniformity and laser damage resistance were characterized. The results show that, the total content of trace elements in quartz crystal is controlled within 7 x 10-6, the internal transmittance reaches 99.80%/mm, the unevenness of birefringence difference is less than 0.029 7%, and the PV value of optical uniformity reaches 3.9 x 10-6, (effective aperture Φ140 mm). To obtain better frequency bands for source bearing estimation, experiments using an ice-mounted geophone were performed at three sites on the Arctic ice cap. By transforming to the frequency domain, errors of the bearing estimation in a number of frequency bands within 1000 Hz and the horizontal peak displacements received by the geophone in the corresponding frequency bands were obtained. After comparing the variation in errors to the peak displacements in the same frequency band, it was found that the errors are related to the peak displacements, and higher peak displacement values mean smaller errors. When the incident angle of the acoustic source and the ice thickness meet certain conditions, some modes of the Lamb waves of the ice plate are excited, the peak displacements in the same frequency band are increased, the errors of bearing estimation are reduced, and the effective frequency band for bearing estimation is broadened. Periodic permanent magnet(PPM) electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) are commonly employed for axial defect inspection in pipelines. However, the lowest-order shear horizontal waves (SH0) guided waves have difficulties in distinctly differentiating internal and external defects. To enhance the signal-to-noise ratio and resolution, a unidirectional electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) based on Circumferential Lamb waves (CLamb waves) is developed. Through structural parameter optimization and excitation frequency adjustment, high-amplitude and low-dispersion CLamb waves are successfully generated in the high-frequency-thickness product region of the dispersion curve. Finite element simulations and experimental validation confirm the capability of this EMAT in exciting CLamb waves for the detection of crack-like defects. Experimental results demonstrate that the excitation efficiency of the CLamb EMAT exceeds that of the periodic permanent magnet electromagnetic acoustic transducer by more than tenfold. The defect reflection signal of the CLamb EMAT exhibits higher resolution and more significant amplitude compared to the PPM EMAT. The integration of this method with SH0 mode detection allows for the inspection of both internal and external defects in pipelines, offering a new avenue for EMAT applications in pipeline inspection. Although Lamb waves have found extensive use in structural damage detection, their practical applications remain limited. This limitation primarily arises from the intricate nature of Lamb wave propagation modes and the effect of temperature variations. Therefore, rather than directly inspecting and interpreting Lamb wave responses for insights into the structural health, this study proposes a novel approach, based on a two-step cointegration-based computation procedure, for structural damage evaluation using Lamb wave data represented as time series that exhibit some common trends. The first step involves the composition of Lamb wave series sharing a common upward (or downward) trend of temperature. In the second step, the cointegration analysis is applied for each group of Lamb wave series, which represents a certain condition of damage. So, a cointegration analysis model of Lamb wave series is created for each damage condition. The geometrical and statistical features of Lamb wave series and cointegration residual series are used for detecting and distinguishing damage conditions. These features include the shape, peak-to-peak amplitude, and variance of the series. The validity of this method is confirmed through its application to the Lamb wave data collected from both undamaged and damaged aluminium plates subjected to temperature fluctuations. The proposed approach can find its application not only in Lamb wave-based damage detection, but also in other structural health monitoring (SHM) systems where the data can be arranged in the form of sharing common environmental and/or operational trends. The use of metamaterials in terahertz (THz) polarization wave plates is widespread. Metallic metamaterials, however, typically operate within a constrained bandwidth and have a large ohmic loss. All‐dielectric metamaterials could address these issues. To achieve an ultrawide‐band at THz frequencies, a multilayered silicon metasurface with elliptical or rectangular pillars has been employed. According to simulations, the achromatic relative bandwidth of the dielectric metamaterial can remain flat within a broadband with the appropriate structural parameters. Additionally, a scoring system with error analysis is added to help with choosing the geometry of terahertz polarization wave plates with various layers of metasurface. The paper presents the possibilities to estimate 304 steel plate's plastic deformation using spectral analysis of the amplitude of difference and sum frequencies resulting from mixing of two Lamb waves with different frequencies. An electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) is used for the excitation of Lamb waves. The numerical modelling of the results of Lamb wave interference in a plate under tensile deformation is carried out; a comprehensive nonlinear factor is proposed and its sensitivity to the tensile deformation has been evaluated. Experimental verification of the modelling results is carried out. The experimental results show that this factor can be used to evaluate 304 steel plate's tensile deformation quantitatively. This evaluation can eliminate the redundancy between difference frequency nonlinear parameter and sum frequency nonlinear parameter, as well as, improve the complementarity between the two parameters. Seismic fault surfaces have complex geometries over a broad-scale range. The Hurst exponent (H) is an important parameter characterizing the complexity of fault geometries. This exponent of seismic faults has only been estimated at outcrops and from surface traces of large earthquakes. This is because geometry data of subsurface faults usually have large uncertainties and many gaps. This study examined the applicability of the lifting scheme, which is one of the wavelet transform methods, to estimate H of irregularly sampled geometry of subsurface faults. We analysed the surface geometry of the subducting oceanic plate at the Nankai trough, Japan, which is part of the fault plane of interplate earthquakes. The geometries of the subducting plate were estimated along six survey lines by integrating seismic refraction and reflection surveys. Two-way traveltimes of reflected waves from the plate surface, which were measured from the reflection survey data, were converted to depth using the velocity structure estimated by refraction survey. The intervals between sampled points were irregular because the reflected waves were obscured or invisible in some places. The Hurst exponents were estimated from the scale dependence of the wavelet coefficients that were derived by the lifting scheme without interpolation. Analyses of the synthetic data simulating the irregularly sampled plate geometries indicated that the lifting scheme yields stable but largely biased estimates of H , especially for small H (<0.5). We introduced the empirical bias correction to achieve an unbiased estimation of the exponent. The analysis of plate geometry at the Nankai trough was conducted at narrow-scale ranges with consideration for the accuracy of velocity structures. We may conclude that H of five survey lines across the trough axis is > 0.8, and that of a line along trough is > 0.7. These estimated exponents had large uncertainties due to analyses at narrow-scale ranges, but were close to the estimates in studies of the surface traces of large earthquakes. Remote control of the state of the atmosphere is an urgent problem nowadays. The problem of remote monitoring of the optical parameters of the atmosphere is solved using a matrix polarization lidar (MPL). The scattering matrix obtained from polarization measurements contains complete information on the scattering parameters in the atmosphere. The purpose of the present research is the derivation of the theory and description of methods for solving problems of practical implementation of the multiwave MPL (MMPL). The problem is considered within the framework of the concept of the unified methodological approach to polarization studies. The MMPL operation principle is based on simultaneous use for sensing of the first, second, and third harmonics of radiation of a widespread Nd:YAG laser. The basis for achieving this purpose is provided by new methods of optical selection of the polarization components of radiation received in the experiment, methods of conducting polarization studies, and new solutions in experimental data processing methods. It has been shown that this challenge can be solved within the framework of simple solutions. Human health monitoring (HHM) is essential for continued daily task execution, as is structural health monitoring (SHM) for structures to ensure the continual performance of their designed tasks with optimal efficiency. The existence of damage in a structure affects its optimal use through stiffness deterioration. Damage of different forms could occur in a structure but have the singular objective of material degradation, leading to its underuse for a task. Guided wave ultrasonics has shown strength in detecting sundry damage in structures, but most of the damage monitored and detected is unfilled with substances. However, some damage could trap and accumulate substances that could hasten material degradation through corrosion activities under favorable conditions, especially in the oil and gas industry. This study used the ultrasonic-guided waves' pitch–catch inspection technique to identify damage filled with different materials. The assessment was based on the RMSD of the dominant Lamb wave mode's average maximum amplitude and the response signals' transmission coefficient (TC). A five-cycle tone burst of excitation signals of different frequencies was created to generate propagating Lamb waves in the structure. The fundamental antisymmetric mode was found to be more sensitive than the fundamental symmetric mode when detecting damage filled with various substances. At 80 kHz, the deviation of the current response signals from the baseline response signals due to different filled substances in the damage was distinct and decreased with increased fluid viscosity. Lateral modes are responsible for the in-band spurious resonances that appear on BAW resonators, degrading the in-band filter response. In this work, a fast computational method based on the transmission line matrix (TLM) method is employed to model the lateral resonances of BAW resonators. Using the precomputed dispersion curves of Lamb waves and an equivalent characteristic impedance for the TE1 mode, a network of transmission lines is used to calculate the magnitude of field distributions on the electrodes. These characteristics are specific to the stack layer configuration. The model's implementation is based on nodal Y matrices, from which particle displacement profiles are coupled to the electric domain via piezoelectric constitutive relations. Consequently, the input impedance of the resonator is obtained. The model exhibits strong agreement with FEM simulations of FBARs and SMRs, and with measurements of several SMRs. The multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm is originally used for direction of arrival estimation and frequency identification. MUSIC-like algorithms have gained their popularity in structural health monitoring (SHM) owing to their super-resolution characteristic and the virtue of baseline independence. MUSIC essentially is a searching algorithm to find the best phase difference matching between the eigenvector from signal subspace and the presupposed steering vector. However, in the guided-wave-based SHM (in plate-like structure, the guided wave is Lamb wave), the dispersion effect will definitely lead to phase distortion. Therefore, Xu et al. presented a focusing MUSIC algorithm where the time reversal technique is adopted to eliminate the dispersion in the way of back propagation. Seeing that the phase difference information, which is necessary for MUSIC, disappears after back propagation, the damage scattered wave packet, obtained by window truncation, is forward propagated again at the constant group velocity to recover the time of flight information. Nevertheless, the forward propagation process is superfluous from the view of phase matching. In the presented forward-propagation-free focusing MUSIC (FPF-F MUSIC) algorithm (the simplified version of Xu's work), by revising the steering vector in the form of phase coincidence, the matching relation for MUSIC is modified from phase difference matching to phase alignment matching, so that the forward propagation and the steering vector traversal setting for every inspection point are all omitted. This study proposes an improved two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method (2D-FDTD) to simulate the propagation of guided waves in three-dimensional (3D) stiffened plates, which can greatly reduce the calculation amount and accelerate the simulation process. This method can be used for damage-detection imaging based on time-reversal with wavefield reconstruction (TR-RW) as a quick numerical simulation of wavefield is available. First, the piezoelectric wafer active sensors excite and collect Lamb wave signals in the damaged stiffening plate, after which these signals are reversed in the time domain. Second, the TR signals are again triggered by each sensor in turn on the reconstructed numerical model of the tested structure with 2D-FDTD. Third, the wavefield animation is obtained through simulation. Finally, the energy of the wavefield can be focused in certain areas, indicating the location of the damage. As an example, TR-RW, combined with 2D-FDTD method, is adopted to detect damage in an integral grid-stiffened plate, showing that the proposed 2D method can decrease the calculation time from dozens of minutes in the 3D model to dozens of seconds, which is of great significance for damage-detection applications. Furthermore, compared with the virtual TR method, the combined TR-RW and 2D-FDTD method can overcome the multipath effect and improve the damage location accuracy of stiffened structures. Precise damage identification and quantification is of great significance to ensure structural performance and provide early-warning for safety maintenance. In this research, a time-reversal assisted probabilistic strategy is developed to accurately localize damage via baseline-free manner in plate-like structures by fusing damage prediction data obtained from the elliptical trajectory location method (ETLM) and reconstruction algorithm for probabilistic inspection of defects (RAPID) algorithm. Damage features, including time difference for ETLM and correlation coefficient index (CCI) for RAPID algorithm, are extracted from the time-reversal focusing signal using the Hilbert transform (HT). To make full use of the damage-related information contained in the time-reversal focusing signals and improve the localizing accuracy, a decision-level data fusion based on Bayesian inference is proposed to fuse damage features and reconstruct damage information. A series of numerical and experimental studies, including different configurations of damage cases and transducer distributions, were conducted to investigate the performances of the proposed time-reversal assisted probabilistic method on damage localization. Results shows that the proposed method could successfully achieve accurate damage localization via baseline-free manner and significantly reduce the damage artifacts compared to traditional methods. The grouting quality of the grouting sleeve connector is crucial for ensuring the stability of prefabricated building components. In practical engineering, the grouting sleeve is often arranged with multiple sleeves, and there is no feasible nondestructive testing method for testing the complex arrangement of the sleeve grouting joints in the embedded state. Building upon the feasibility of nondestructive detection of single socket grouting connectors, this study discusses the feasibility of defect detection and the severity of defects. Simulation results are used to investigate the choice of the best excitation signal. For different simulated damage cases, it is proven that the selected damage index can be very sensitive, and both the location and the extent of the damage can be detected successfully. The results demonstrate that with the section injury rate ranging from 10% to 40%, the reverse focus peak decreased from 20% to 60% compared to no injury. The effectiveness of the Lamb−wave−based time reversal method in detecting the internal grouting defects of multiple grouting sleeve joints is proven. Ultrasonic attenuation measurements were conducted on cross-ply and quasi-isotropic lay-ups of eight types of carbon-fiber reinforced composites (CFRPs) using through-transmission methods with diffraction correction. Attenuation values were substantially higher than those of unidirectional composites and other structural materials. Wave modes, fiber distributions, matrix resins, and consolidation methods affected total attenuation. Transverse mode, quasi-isotropic lay-up, and polyimide and thermoplastic resins generally produced higher attenuation. No clear trends from the fiber distribution were revealed, indicating that it is not feasible presently to predict the attenuation of various lay-ups from the unidirectional values. That is, direct attenuation tests for different laminate lay-ups are needed. This work expanded the existing attenuation database by properly determining the attenuation coefficients of two additional layup types of CFRP laminates. Results showed the merit of ultrasonic attenuation measurements for quality control and structural health monitoring applications. Using a network of global navigation satellite systems receivers in New Zealand, located 2,000–3,300 km southwest of Hunga Tonga‐Hunga Ha'apai volcano, we found at least three different kinds of ionospheric disturbances from changes in total electron contents (TEC). Ionospheric signatures of the near‐field acoustic wave propagating ∼0.8 km/s were not clear in New Zealand due possibly to large geometric decay. The first disturbance emerged ∼1 hr after the eruption and traveled toward southwest with a speed of ∼0.6 km/s. This, together with the subsequent disturbance propagating by ∼0.4 km/s, suggests its link to the ahead‐of‐tsunami ionospheric disturbance, excited by the Lamb wave and subsequent tsunamis traveling in the Pacific Ocean. The second disturbance started ∼2 hr after the eruption as tens of waves with periods 10–15 min propagating by ∼0.3 km/s, possibly internal gravity waves (IGW) excited by the passages of the Lamb wave. Such IGW wave trains continued until ∼10 hr after the eruption. The Lamb wave traveled round the earth, and its second and third passages disturbed the ionosphere in New Zealand on the next day as similar IGW wave trains following the Lamb wave. The third disturbance occurred as an enhancement of the harmonic oscillation of TEC with frequency of ∼3.7 mHz, ∼14 hr after the eruption. This might be an atmospheric mode excited by the eruption, but its propagation and sudden activation remain unexplained. Intense eruptions of the Tonga volcano activated prominent traveling atmospheric disturbances (TADs) at 04:05UT on 15 January 2022. Himawari‐8 satellite images depict that TADs of the tropospheric Lamb wavefront propagate with a speed of 315 m/s and arrive in Taiwan at 11:30UT. Networks of 98 barometers, 28 tide gauges, an ionosonde, and 10 magnetometers are used to study the responses of magnetic fields to TADs in Taiwan. The horizontal components in magnetic field changes of the Taiwan magnetometers all point toward and away from the Tonga volcano at 11:00–12:00UT upon the tropospheric Lamb wavefront arrival and at 22:00–23:00UT when the thermospheric Lamb wavefront with speeds of 487 m/s coming, respectively. Analyses of the raytracing and beamforming techniques on the horizontal components in magnetic field changes of 69 INTERMAGNET magnetometers show that both tropospheric and thermospheric Lamb waves efficiently activate traveling ionospheric disturbances and modify ionospheric currents of the globe. Plain Language Summary: At 04:05UT on 15 January 2022, intense Tonga volcanic eruptions induce prominent atmospheric disturbances and tsunami waves. Himawari‐8 meteorological satellite images depict the induced upper‐level tropospheric disturbances with horizontal speeds of about 315 m/s at 8.2 km altitude in the Lamb wave mode travel worldwide. Upon the traveling atmospheric disturbances (TADs) of the tropospheric Lamb wavefront arriving in Taiwan at 11:30UT, 98 ground‐based barometers register increases and reach peaks at about 11:50UT in the atmospheric pressure; 28 tide gauges record enhancements and maximums of sea level fluctuations at about 14:30–17:30UT; and a local ionosonde observes that the ionosphere reaches the highest altitude at 14:30UT. The changes of the horizontal component of the Earth's magnetic fields measured by 10 Taiwan magnetometers almost all point exactly toward the Tonga volcano upon the tropospheric Lamb wavefront arrival at 11:00–12:00UT, and away from the volcano at 22:00–23:00UT, which suggests a 487 m/s TAD (or thermospheric Lamb wavefront) at about 130 km altitude also being activated. The horizontal components in magnetic field changes of 69 INTERMAGNET magnetometers show that both tropospheric and thermospheric Lamb waves triggered by Tonga volcanic eruptions are very powerful, and can induce intense dynamo currents and electric fields on the globe. The massive eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai (HTHH) volcano in Tonga on 15 January 2022 at 04:15 UTC had a global impact and triggered an atmospheric wave and a tsunami. We first analyzed observation data from meteorological stations and tide gauges at 12 locations. Low-frequency trends in the observation data were removed by using a high-pass filter. Fourier and wavelet spectral analyses were applied to determine the frequency characteristics of the filtered data. Modal analysis was developed and used to investigate natural oscillation periods based on bathymetry. The results showed that the Lamb wave generated by the atmospheric pressure wave arrived ~ 7 and ~ 44 h after the eruption. The tsunami arrived ~ 11 and ~ 45 h after the eruption, which corresponded to the arrival time of the Lamb wave. The dominant periods of the Lamb waves were ~ 7.7 and ~ 7.5 min, and for the tsunamis they were ~ 9.9 and ~ 28.7 min. The periods derived from the spectral analysis matched the natural oscillation of the eigenperiod derived from the modal analysis, in eight out of the twelve stations. The impact acoustic emission (AE) of plate structures is a transient stress wave generated by local materials under impact force that contains the state information of the impacted area. If the impact causes damage, the AE from material damage will be superimposed on the impact AE. Therefore, this paper details the direct extraction of damage-induced AEs from impact AEs for the health monitoring of plate structures. The damage-induced AE was analysed based on various aspects, including the cut-off range and propagation speed characteristics of the Lamb wave mode, the correlation between the force direction and the Lamb wave mode, and the impact damage process. According to these features, the damage-induced AE wave packets were extracted and verified via impact tests on epoxy glass fibreboards. In 2022, the Hunga volcano eruption in Tonga generated atmospheric pressure waves that propagated globally and produced tsunamis in all the world's oceans. The largest pressure wave, with an amplitude of several hundred pascals, is the Lamb wave. Standard Lamb wave models, incorporating the sound‐speed as a function of temperature, satisfactorily explain observations in the near‐field but not in the far‐field. We show that an augmented Lamb wave model that includes the effects of wind and topography accurately reproduces the wavefronts observed by satellites and barometers, including those close to the antipode. Winds, first suggested to explain the travel times of Lamb waves from Krakatau in 1883, are now shown to also play a major role in shaping their waveforms; temperature and topography play smaller, but still detectable, roles. Our augmented model provides a significant advance for the development of early warning and hazard assessments for the meteotsunamis these waves produce. Plain Language Summary: The January 2022 explosive eruption of the Hunga volcano in Tonga produced a pressure wave (of a type known as a Lamb wave) in the atmosphere, which was detected worldwide. This wave circled the Earth more than once, and generated tsunami in unexpected times and places. We have derived a mathematical description that allows us to quickly and accurately model the observations of this atmospheric wave. The description includes the effects of winds, temperature, and topography. The wave modeled using this description reproduces satellite and ground observations much better than simpler models, notably the complex pattern of the wave near the antipode of the eruption. The explosive eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano on 15 January 2022 generated atmospheric waves traveling around the Earth, which caused ionospheric disturbances on various spatio-temporal scales. A HF Doppler sounding system in Japan detected characteristic ionospheric disturbances showing periodic oscillations in the Doppler frequency with a period of ~ 4 min. In this study, such periodic oscillations were examined by comparing Doppler frequency data with Total Electron Content data obtained by Global Navigation Satellite System. The observed periodic oscillations in the Doppler frequency were characterized by a sawtooth or S-letter shaped variation, implying the passage of the traveling ionospheric disturbances through the reflection points of the HF Doppler sounding system. It was also found that the periodic oscillations occurred prior to the arrival of the tropospheric Lamb wave excited by the Tonga eruption. From the total electron content data, the traveling ionospheric disturbances causing the periodic oscillations were excited by the tropospheric Lamb waves at the conjugate point in the southern hemisphere, namely, the electric field perturbations due to the Lamb waves in the southern hemisphere mapped onto the sensing area of the HF Doppler sounding system in the northern hemisphere along the magnetic field lines. The periodic oscillations were observed only in the path between Chofu transmitter and Sarobetsu receiver, whose the radio propagation path is almost aligned in the north–south direction. This suggests that the traveling ionospheric disturbance has a structure elongating in the meridional direction. The variation in the Doppler frequency was reproduced by using a simple model of the propagation of the traveling ionospheric disturbances and the resultant motion of the reflection point. As a result, the vertical motion of the reflection point associated with the periodic oscillations was estimated to be about 1 km. It is known that 4-min period variations are sometimes observed in association with earthquakes, which is due to resonances of acoustic mode waves propagating between the ground and the lower ionosphere. Based on the modified couple stress theory, Legendre orthogonal polynomial method is used to solve the propagation characteristics of the Lamb wave in functionally graded magnetoelectric microplates. The correctness of the method is verified by comparisons with the previous literature and the global matrix method. Compared to the global matrix method, the Legendre orthogonal polynomial method provides an efficient numerical method for solving functionally graded magnetoelectric structures without layering and iterative root finding. In this paper, the influences of the couple stress, magnetoelectric coupling and inhomogeneity with different boundary conditions are discussed in detail. It is found that the couple stress effect and magnetoelectric effect are mutually inhibited. This mutual inhibition under the magnetoelectric short circuit boundary condition is stronger than that under the magnetoelectric open circuit boundary condition. Water is widely used in the mining industry, particularly in mineral enrichment processes. In the process of magnetic separation or flotation of crushed ore, a concentrate (an enriched product), and tailings (a product with a low content of a useful component) are obtained. One of the main tasks of enrichment processes is the efficient use of water resources. This is achieved by reclaiming and subsequent reusing water contained in ore beneficiation products by extracting it in industrial thickeners. Optimizing this process makes it possible to reduce water usage in the mining industry, reduce costs of mineral enrichment processes, and address extremely urgent environmental protection problems. To evaluate the process of sedimentation of the solid phase in the pulp within the thickener, measurements of parameters of longitudinal ultrasonic oscillations and Lamb waves that have traveled a fixed distance in the pulp and along the measuring surface in contact with it are used. The proposed approach allows for the consideration of pulp density, particle size of the solid phase in the ore material and the dynamics of changes in these parameters in the thickener at the initial stage of the sedimentation process. At 04:14:45 UT on 2022 January 15, a powerful eruption of the submarine Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha'apai volcano occurred at about 30 km south of the Ha'apai Islands in the Kingdom of Tonga (at −20.55° N, −175.39° E). This eruption caused atmospheric waves that spread worldwide. In this study, we investigate the the total electron content (TEC) variation over China using the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System. The particularly interesting feature of the data set compared to other ground-based TEC data is the exclusive use of the BeiDou geostationary satellites, which monitor the TEC variations for fixed ionospheric piercing points and can provide more accurate calculations of the travelling speed of the disturbance. For comparison, atmospheric pressure records were examined, which show that the Lamb wave passed by the same stations four times with a constant speed of 310 m s−1. However, the TEC results show that the ionospheric disturbances passing over China four times with different speeds within four days after the eruption, two travelling along the short-path direction and two along the long-path direction. The primary front of the first short-path event travels with a speed of 340 m s−1, which is higher than the Lamb wave. The faster speed suggests that the primary front cannot be fully attributed to the Lamb wave, and further studies need to explore its mechanism. The second short-path and first long-path events travel with speeds of 301 and 310 m s−1, respectively, close to the speed of the Lamb wave, and they may be caused by upward energy leakage during the propagation of the Lamb wave. In this paper, a weakly coupled system (by the displacement of symmetric type) consisting of a viscoelastic Kirchhoff plate equation involving free boundary conditions and the viscoelastic wave equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions in a bounded domain is considered. Traditional methods for detecting damage in engineering structures often use offline static damage detection. To enable the real-time and precise identification of dynamic damage while maintaining symmetry in engineering structures, this study primarily concentrates on isotropic plate structures widely employed in engineering. Moreover, fiberglass board composite plates were opted as a specific research object. By utilizing the weak S0 mode signals generated by low-frequency ultrasonic Lamb waves, the non-stationary A0 wave signals in the composite symmetry plate structure are collected using the non-contact SLDV (Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer) technique. The frequency characteristic parameters in the vibration signals are obtained through HHT (Hilbert–Huang Transform) analysis, followed by filtering and noise reduction. Finally, the circular trajectory intersection method is employed to accurately locate dynamic damage sources in plate structures with different material properties, thereby validating the positioning effect of contact sensors in detecting impacts caused by random impulses. The creation of a sink in a lossless wave‐bearing medium is achieved using complex frequency signals—harmonic excitations that exponentially grow in time. The wave sink, where incident waves are confined to a point, has attracted interest for imaging and sensing since it may lead to arbitrarily small hotspots that surpass the diffraction limit. However, most methods of creating sinks require careful tuning, such as by impedance matching the sink to free space through the inclusion of loss, which imposes constraints on emerging applications. An alternative method, proposed here, relies on complex frequency excitations, bypassing the need to modify the scattering system by instead shaping the input signal. Eigenvalue zeros derived from a scattering formalism extended to the complex frequency plane reveal operating conditions that induce complete energy trapping under steady‐state conditions in a framework generally applicable to 2D and 3D media. To support the developed theory, an experiment is performed where a sink is realized using elastic waves on a plate with a circular cutout. These findings may lead to imaging and sensing applications relying on subwavelength focal points and nonlinear wave generation due to the high amplitudes achieved over short timescales. Lamb wave propagation must be understood comprehensively for simply evaluating delamination during ultrasonic testing. However, the difference between wave propagation, visualized using laser Doppler vibrometer and pulsed-laser scanners, has not been sufficiently investigated, and knowledge of optimal conditions for evaluating delamination is limited. Thus, in this study, the mode conversion and multiple reflections of Lamb waves propagating in a delaminated cross-ply laminate were visualized using different laser scanners, delamination depths, and wave incident angles. Delamination was characterized using maximum-amplitude map postprocessing under specific conditions. Further numerical analysis revealed that owing to multiple reflections of the antisymmetric mode in incident and mode-converted waves, standing waves were generated in the delaminated sublaminate. Dispersion curve and flexural stiffness calculations confirmed the conditions required for high-amplitude standing waves, thereby providing guidelines for simply and reliably evaluating delamination during inspections. The aim of this work is to propose a numerical methodology based on the finite element (FE) method to study the propagation mechanisms of transmitted, converted, and reflected guided waves in stiffened fiber‐reinforced polymeric (FRP) composite structures. The dispersion curves of such modes can help designers to improve the damage detection sensitivity of Lamb waves based structural health monitoring (SHM) systems. Using a FE model, whose accuracy is demonstrated against semi‐analytical data in a previous work, the phenomena of scattering and mode conversion in composite panels characterized by a structural discontinuity, such as a stiffener, are investigated. In particular, the behavior of guided waves is analyzed using stiffeners of different shapes, C and Omega shaped. The research activity makes it possible to highlight conversion of modes and reflected waves at stiffeners, providing new observations compared to the state of the art. The morphological complexities of the structure (thickness steps, multiple boundaries, stiffeners) can be used to redirect guided waves and to allow monitoring of a specific area. Metal structural plates are extensively used in various engineering structures due to their high strength, high-temperature resistance, toughness, and plasticity. However, they are susceptible to damage from external loads and impacts over time. The current Lamb wave detection methods suffer from dispersion and multimodal effects, leading to ineffective identification of damage information. In this paper, we investigate Lamb wave propagation in steel structure plates with flat-bottomed holes using a sinusoidal modulation five-peak wave signal. Finite element numerical models are developed, and an experimental platform is constructed using steel and aluminum boards. Experimental data is collected using a Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (SLDV, PSV-500, Polytec Inc., Baden-Württemberg, German). The results demonstrate that, under the same frequency, the damage reflection energy for different modes is distinct. By fusing the data from the two modes, more accurate damage imaging results are obtained in the frequency-wavenumber (f-k) domain compared to single-mode imaging. Furthermore, experiments are conducted to locate damage in a steel board with a through hole and an aluminum plate with double flat-bottomed holes, confirming the feasibility of the proposed algorithm in isotropic plates. Purpose: Lamb wave is widely used in damage detection and structural health monitoring of plate-like structures. In the current stage, the propagation of non-axisymmetric circular crested Lamb has not been theoretically solved. Therefore, it is essential to find its exact solutions. Methods: The displacement expressions and frequency equations are derived through three-dimensional elastic theory using Helmholtz conversion. Numerical simulations and experiments are conducted on plates for verification of theoretical results. Results: Both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric waves are obtained from the governing equation with free boundary conditions. Lamb wave travels along the radial direction and holds as a standing wave in circumferential and longitudinal directions. The displacement field is expressed with Bessel functions in the radial direction and trigonometric functions in circumferential and longitudinal directions. Two families of Lamb wave modes are generated, which are identified by radial wavenumber and circumferential order. The amplitudes of displacements decrease with the propagation distance increases, and the circumferential distributions of displacements are affected by the circumferential order. Results obtained from simulation and experiment provide good verification for theoretical predictions. Conclusions: The analytic solutions are presented in non-axisymmetric problems for circular crested Lamb wave in this paper, which provides a theoretical foundation for further investigation of Lamb wave propagation in plates. The use of adhesive joints has become increasingly popular in various industries due to their many benefits, such as low weight and good mechanical performance. However, adhesive joints can suffer from defects, one of them being weak adhesion. This defect poses a significant risk to structural integrity and can lead to premature failure, but is hard to detect using existing nondestructive testing methods. Therefore, there is a need for an effective technique that can detect weak adhesion in single-lap joints (SLJ) to prevent failure and assist in maintenance, namely in the framework of structural health monitoring. This paper presents a novel approach utilizing machine learning and Lamb Waves (LW) to determine the level of weak adhesion. Firstly, a numerical model of SLJs with different levels of weak adhesion is created and an original approach is proposed for its validation with data from real samples so that reliable LW data can further be easily generated to train and test any other data-driven algorithm for tackling damage. Secondly, a damage detection method is proposed, based on artificial neural networks and fed with simulated data, to determine the level of damage in SLJs, independent of their location. The results show that the simulation model can be validated with a small set of experimental data, being capable of replicating real damage in SLJs. Additionally, the use of simulated data in the training algorithm can increase the accuracy of the simulation model up to 26% when compared to only considering experimental data. The adopted artificial neural network for detecting weak adhesion emerges as a promising approach, yielding a precision of over 95%. Thus, machine learning and LW data can be used to improve the reliability and accuracy of adhesive bonding quality control, as well function as a technique for structural health monitoring, which can enhance the safety and durability of bonded structures. The dependence of radiation losses in a liquid on the value of displacement component U3 normal to the plate on the surface of a piezoelectric plate for Lamb waves of various orders has been experimentally investigated. The waves whose phase velocity Vn in the plate is greater than velocity Vl of the longitudinal volumetric acoustic wave in the liquid are considered. It is shown that at low values of U3, there is no radiation into the liquid and the value of radiation losses is close to zero even at Vn > Vl, at high values of U3, the value of radiation losses is large and for Lamb waves in the YZ–LiNbO3 plate with a normalized wavelength thickness of 1.75 and a frequency of 16.97 MHz, it reaches a value of 4 dB/mm, comparable to the radiation losses of surface acoustic waves in the same material. Abstract: Local scour is a growing cause of bridge failure in the United States and around the world. In the next century, the effects of climate changes will make more bridges susceptible to scour failure more than ever before. This study aims to harness the spatially continuous monitoring capabilities of ultrasonic time-domain reflectometry to detect a soil interface for the purposes of scour monitoring. In this study, a long, slender plate is coupled with two flexible piezoelectric devices that propagate Lamb waves along the length of the plate to form the scour sensor. The sensor was tested for sensitivity to external pressure using metal weights and was able to detect the position of the pressure up at a length of up to ∼20 feet. The sensor was tested under simulated scour conditions, being buried in sand at various depths. The results show that the Lamb wave scour sensor is capable of reliably detecting a soil interface at 1 ft intervals. The scour sensor was also able to detect uncompacted soil interfaces, which is important considering the issue of scour hole refill following an extreme event.
