Magnesium silicate hydrate (M‐S‐H) represents a promising alternative to traditional cement, particularly for low‐pH construction applications such as nuclear waste encapsulation and carbon dioxide injection. The durability of construction materials, a critical aspect of their suitability for various purposes, is primarily governed by the kinetics of dissolution of the binder phase under service conditions. In this study, we employed in situ atomic force microscopy to assess the dissolution rates of M‐S‐H in water equilibrated with air. Quantitative analysis based on changes in volume and height revealed dissolution rates ranging from 0.18 to 3.09 × 10−12 mol/cm2/s depending on the precipitate Mg/Si ratio and morphology. This rate surpasses its crystalline analogs, talc (Mg3Si4O10(OH)2) and serpentine (Mg3(Si2O5)(OH)4), by about three to five orders of magnitude. Interestingly, oriented M‐S‐H dissolved faster than non‐oriented M‐S‐H. Spatially resolved assessments of dissolution rates facilitated a direct correlation between rates and morphology, showing that edges and smaller crystallites dissolve at a faster pace compared to facets and larger crystallites. The outcomes of this study provide insights into the mechanisms governing the dissolution of M‐S‐H and the factors dictating its durability. A cellulose-based aerogel has been synthesized from rambutan peel to mitigate environmental pollution caused by agricultural waste, rendering it an eco-friendly material with potential applications in oil spill remediation as well as enhancing the value of this fruit. The objective of this study was to extract cellulose from rambutan peel using chlorination and alkalization processes, followed by optimizing the synthesis conditions of cellulose-based aerogels from rambutan peel through experimental designs to improve oil removal efficiency. In this research, cellulose-based aerogel material was synthesized using the sol-gel method, utilizing waste from rambutan peel as the substrate and polyvinyl alcohol as the cross-linking agent, followed by freeze-drying. A central composite design with 30 different experimental setups was employed to investigate the influence of cellulose content (1.0-2.0%), cross-linking agent (polyvinyl alcohol) content (0.1-0.3%), ultrasonic time (5-15 min), and ultrasonic power (100-300W) on the oil adsorption capacity (g/g) of cellulosebased aerogels from rambutan peel. The research findings demonstrated successful extraction of cellulose from rambutan peel through chlorination, followed by softening with 17.5% (w/v) sodium hydroxide. Response surface plots indicated that maximizing the cellulose component could lead to a maximum diesel oil adsorption capacity of up to 52.301 g/g. Cellulose-based aerogel exhibits ultralightweight properties (0.027±0.002 g/cm3), high porosity (97.88±0.19), hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 152.7o), and superior oil selective adsorption compared to several commercially available materials in the market, demonstrating promising potential for application in treating oil-contaminated water in real-world scenarios. Compound K (CK) is one of the major metabolites found in mammalian blood and organs following oral administration of Panax plants. CK, also known as minor ginsenoside, can be absorbed in the systemic circulation. It has garnered significant attention in healthcare and medical products due to its pharmacological activities, such as antioxidation, anticancer, antiproliferation, antidiabetics, neuroprotection, and anti-atherogenic activities. However, CK is not found in natural ginseng plants but in traditional chemical synthesis, which uses toxic solvents and leads to environmental pollution during the harvest process. Moreover, enzymatic reactions are impractical for industrial CK production due to low yield and high costs. Although CK could be generated from major ginsenosides, most ginsenosides, including protopanaxatriol-oleanane and ocotillol-type, are not converted into CK by catalyzing β-glucosidase. Therefore, microbial cell systems have been used as a promising solution, providing a safe and efficient approach to CK production. This review provides a summary of various approaches for the production of CK, including chemical and enzymatic reactions, biotransformation by the human intestinal bacteria and endophytes as well as engineered microbes. Moreover, the approaches for CK production have been discussed to improve the productivity of target compounds.

Human-induced thermal variability can disrupt energy balance and performance in ectotherms; however, phenotypic plasticity may play a pivotal protective role. Ectotherm performance can be maintained in thermally heterogeneous habitats by reducing the thermal sensitivity of physiological processes and concomitant performance. We examined the capacity of juvenile green sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris) to respond to daily thermal variation. Juveniles (47 days post-hatch) were exposed to either stable (15 ± 0.5 °C) or variable (narrowly variable: 13-17 °C day-1 or widely variable 11-21 °C day-1) thermoperiod treatments, with equivalent mean temperatures (15 ± 0.5 °C), for 21 days. Growth (relative growth rate, % body mass gain), upper thermal tolerance (critical thermal maxima, CTMax) and the thermal sensitivity of swimming performance (critical swimming speed, Ucrit) were assessed in fish from all treatments. Accelerated growth was observed in fish maintained under widely variable temperatures compared to narrowly variable and stable temperatures. No significant variation in CTMax was observed among thermoperiod treatments, suggesting all treatment groups acclimated to the mean temperature rather than daily maximums. The widely variable treatment induced a plastic response in swimming performance, where Ucrit was insensitive to temperature and performance was maintained across a widened thermal breadth. Maximum Ucrit attained was similar among thermoperiod treatments, but performance was maximised at different test temperatures (stable: 4.62 ± 0.44 BL s-1 at 15 °C; narrowly variable: 4.52 ± 0.23 BL s-1 at 21 °C; widely variable: 3.90 ± 0.24 BL s-1 at 11 °C, mean ± s.e.m.). In combination, these findings suggest juvenile A. medirostris are resilient to daily fluctuations in temperature, within the temperature range tested here.
