We present stellar age distributions of the Milky Way (MW) bulge region using ages for $\sim$6,000 high-luminosity ($\log(g) < 2.0$), metal-rich ($\rm [Fe/H] \ge -0.5$) bulge stars observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). Ages are derived using {\it The Cannon} label-transfer method, trained on a sample of nearby luminous giants with precise parallaxes for which we obtain ages using a Bayesian isochrone-matching technique. We find that the metal-rich bulge is predominantly composed of old stars ($>$8 Gyr). We find evidence that the planar region of the bulge ($|Z_{\rm GC}| \le 0.25$ kpc) enriched in metallicity, $Z$, at a faster rate ($dZ/dt \sim$ 0.0034 ${\rm Gyr^{-1}}$) than regions farther from the plane ($dZ/dt \sim$ 0.0013 ${\rm Gyr^{-1}}$ at $|Z_{\rm GC}| > 1.00$ kpc). We identify a non-negligible fraction of younger stars (age $\sim$ 2--5 Gyr) at metallicities of $\rm +0.2 < [Fe/H] < +0.4$. These stars are preferentially found in the plane ($|Z_{\rm GC}| \le 0.25$ kpc) and between $R_{\rm cy} \approx 2-3$ kpc, with kinematics that are more consistent with rotation than are the kinematics of older stars at the same metallicities. We do not measure a significant age difference between stars found in and outside of the bar. These findings show that the bulge experienced an initial starburst that was more intense close to the plane than far from the plane. Then, star formation continued at super-solar metallicities in a thin disk at 2 kpc $\lesssim R_{\rm cy} \lesssim$ 3 kpc until $\sim$2 Gyr ago., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Numerous studies of integrated starlight, stellar counts, and kinematics have confirmed that the Milky Way is a barred galaxy. However, far fewer studies have investigated the bar's stellar population properties, which carry valuable independent information regarding the bar's formation history. Here we conduct a detailed analysis of chemical abundance distributions ([Fe/H] and [Mg/Fe]) in the on-bar and off-bar regions to study the azimuthal variation of star formation history (SFH) in the inner Galaxy. We find that the on-bar and off-bar stars at Galactocentric radii 3 $< r_{\rm GC}<$ 5 kpc have remarkably consistent [Fe/H] and [Mg/Fe] distribution functions and [Mg/Fe]--[Fe/H] relation, suggesting a common SFH shared by the long bar and the disc. In contrast, the bar and disc at smaller radii (2 $< r_{\rm GC} <$ 3 kpc) show noticeable differences, with relatively more very metal-rich ([Fe/H]~0.4) stars but fewer solar abundance stars in the bar. Given the three-phase star formation history proposed for the inner Galaxy in Lian et al. (2020b), these differences could be explained by the off-bar disc having experienced either a faster early quenching process or recent metal-poor gas accretion. Vertical variations of the abundance distributions at small $r_{\rm GC}$ suggest a wider vertical distribution of low-$\alpha$ stars in the bar, which may serve as chemical evidence for vertical heating through the bar buckling process. Metal-poor stars are important tools for tracing the early history of the Milky Way, and for learning about the first generations of stars. Simulations suggest that the oldest metal-poor stars are to be found in the inner Galaxy. Typical bulge surveys, however, lack low metallicity ([Fe/H] < -1.0) stars because the inner Galaxy is predominantly metal-rich. The aim of the Pristine Inner Galaxy Survey (PIGS) is to study the metal-poor and very metal-poor (VMP, [Fe/H] < -2.0) stars in this region. In PIGS, metal-poor targets for spectroscopic follow-up are selected from metallicity-sensitive CaHK photometry from the CFHT. This work presents the ~250 deg^2 photometric survey as well as intermediate-resolution spectroscopic follow-up observations for ~8000 stars using AAOmega on the AAT. The spectra are analysed using two independent tools: ULySS with an empirical spectral library, and FERRE with a library of synthetic spectra. The comparison between the two methods enables a robust determination of the stellar parameters and their uncertainties. We present a sample of 1300 VMP stars -- the largest sample of VMP stars in the inner Galaxy to date. Additionally, our spectroscopic dataset includes ~1700 horizontal branch stars, which are useful metal-poor standard candles. We furthermore show that PIGS photometry selects VMP stars with unprecedented efficiency: 86%/80% (lower/higher extinction) of the best candidates satisfy [Fe/H] < -2.0, as do 80%/63% of a larger, less strictly selected sample. Chemically tagging groups of stars born in the same birth cluster is a major goal of spectroscopic surveys. To investigate the feasibility of such strong chemical tagging, we perform a blind chemical tagging experiment on abundances measured from APOGEE survey spectra. We apply a density-based clustering algorithm to the eight dimensional chemical space defined by [Mg/Fe], [Al/Fe], [Si/Fe], [K/Fe], [Ti/Fe], [Mn/Fe], [Fe/H], and [Ni/Fe], abundances ratios which together span multiple nucleosynthetic channels. In a high quality sample of 182,538 giant stars, we detect twenty-one candidate clusters with more than fifteen members. Our candidate clusters are more chemically homogeneous than a population of non-member stars with similar [Mg/Fe] and [Fe/H], even in abundances not used for tagging. Group members are consistent with having the same age and fall along a single stellar-population track in logg vs. Teff space. Each group's members are distributed over multiple kpc, and the spread in their radial and azimuthal actions increases with age. We qualitatively reproduce this increase using N-body simulations of cluster dissolution in Galactic potentials that include transient winding spiral arms. Observing our candidate birth clusters with high-resolution spectroscopy in other wavebands to investigate their chemical homogeneity in other nucleosynthetic groups will be essential to confirming the efficacy of strong chemical tagging. We examine four ancient Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) globular clusters (GCs) for evidence of multiple stellar populations using the Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope Programme GO-14164. NGC 1466, NGC 1841, and NGC 2257 all show evidence for a redder, secondary population along the main-sequence. Reticulum does not show evidence for the presence of a redder population, but this GC has the least number of stars and Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the sample of main sequence stars is too small to robustly infer whether a redder population exists in this cluster. The second, redder, population of the other three clusters constitutes $\sim30-40\%$ of the total population along the main-sequence. This brings the total number of ancient LMC GCs with known split or broadened main-sequences to five. However, unlike for Hodge 11 and NGC 2210 (see arXiv:1904.01434), none of the clusters show evidence for multiple populations in the horizontal branch. The Open Cluster Chemical Abundances and Mapping (OCCAM) survey aims to constrain key Galactic dynamical and chemical evolution parameters by the construction of a large, comprehensive, uniform, infrared-based spectroscopic data set of hundreds of open clusters. This fourth contribution from the OCCAM survey presents analysis using SDSS/APOGEE DR16 of a sample of 128 open clusters, 71 of which we designate to be "high quality" based on the appearance of their color-magnitude diagram. We find the APOGEE DR16 derived [Fe/H] abundances to be in good agreement with previous high resolution spectroscopic open cluster abundance studies. Using the high quality sample, we measure Galactic abundance gradients in 16 elements, and find evolution of some of the [X/Fe] gradients as a function of age. We find an overall Galactic [Fe/H] vs R_GC gradient of $-0.068 \pm 0.001$ dex kpc$^{-1}$ over the range of $6 <$ R_GC $< 13.9$ kpc; however, we note that this result is sensitive to the distance catalog used, varying as much as 15%. We formally derive the location a break in the [Fe/H] abundance gradient as a free parameter in the gradient fit for the first time. We also measure significant Galactic gradients in O, Mg, S, Ca, Mn, Cr, Cu, Na, Al, and K, some of which are measured for the first time. Our large sample allows us to explore four well-populated age bins to explore the time evolution of gradients for a large number of elements and comment on possible implications for Galactic chemical evolution and radial migration., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for publication by AJ

The nature of the Sombrero galaxy (M 104 = NGC 4594) has remained elusive despite many observational studies at a variety of wavelengths. Here we present Hubble Space Telescope imaging of two fields at $\sim$16 and 33 kpc along the minor axis to examine stellar metallicity gradients in the extended spheroid. We use this imaging, extending more than 2 mag below the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB), in combination with artificial star tests to forward model observed color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), measuring metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) at different radii along the minor axis. An important and unexpected result is that the halo of the Sombrero is strikingly metal-rich: even the outer field, located at $\sim$17 effective radii of the bulge, has a median metallicity [Z/H]$\sim$-0.15 and the fraction of stars with [Z/H]<-1.0 is negligible. This is unprecedented among massive galaxy halos studied to date, even among giant ellipticals. We find significant radial metallicity gradients, characterized by an increase in the fraction of metal-poor stars with radius and a gradient in median metallicity of $\sim$-0.01 dex/kpc. The density profile is well fit by power laws with slopes that exhibit a dependence on metallicity, with flatter slopes for more metal-poor stars. We discuss our results in the context of recent stellar MDF studies of other nearby galaxies and potential formation scenarios for the Sombrero galaxy., Comment: ApJ accepted

Using 3D positions and kinematics of stars relative to the Sagittarius (Sgr) orbital plane and angular momentum, we identify 166 Sgr stream members observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) that also have Gaia DR2 astrometry. This sample of 63/103 stars in the Sgr trailing/leading arm are combined with an APOGEE sample of 710 members of the Sgr dwarf spheroidal core (385 of them newly presented here) to establish differences of 0.6 dex in median metallicity and 0.1 dex in [$\alpha$/Fe] between our Sgr core and dynamically older stream samples. Mild chemical gradients are found internally along each arm, but these steepen when anchored by core stars. With a model of Sgr tidal disruption providing estimated dynamical ages (i.e., stripping times) for each stream star, we find a mean metallicity gradient of 0.12 +/- 0.03 dex/Gyr for stars stripped from Sgr over time. For the first time, an [$\alpha$/Fe] gradient is also measured within the stream, at 0.02 +/- 0.01 dex/Gyr using magnesium abundances and 0.04 +/- 0.01 dex/Gyr using silicon, which imply that the Sgr progenitor had significant radial abundance gradients. We discuss the magnitude of those inferred gradients and their implication for the nature of the Sgr progenitor within the context of the current family of Milky Way satellite galaxies, and suggest that more sophisticated Sgr models are needed to properly interpret the growing chemodynamical detail we have on the Sgr system., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables. We investigate the Fe, C, N, O, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ce and Nd abundances of 2283 red giant stars in 31 globular clusters from high-resolution spectra observed in both the northern and southern hemisphere by the SDSS-IV APOGEE-2 survey. This unprecedented homogeneous dataset, largest to date, allows us to discuss the intrinsic Fe spread, the shape and statistics of Al-Mg and N-C anticorrelations as a function of cluster mass, luminosity, age and metallicity for all 31 clusters. We find that the Fe spread does not depend on these parameters within our uncertainties including cluster metallicity, contradicting earlier observations. We do not confirm the metallicity variations previously observed in M22 and NGC 1851. Some clusters show a bimodal Al distribution, while others exhibit a continuous distribution as has been previously reported in the literature. We confirm more than 2 populations in $\omega$ Cen and NGC 6752, and find new ones in M79. We discuss the scatter of Al by implementing a correction to the standard chemical evolution of Al in the Milky Way. After correction, its dependence on cluster mass is increased suggesting that the extent of Al enrichment as a function of mass was suppressed before the correction. We observe a turnover in the Mg-Al anticorrelation at very low Mg in $\omega$ Cen, similar to the pattern previously reported in M15 and M92. $\omega$ Cen may also have a weak K-Mg anticorrelation, and if confirmed, it would be only the third cluster known to show such a pattern., Comment: Published in MNRAS, 31 pages, 24 figures, 7 tables. The binary fractions of open and globular clusters yield powerful constraints on their dynamical state and evolutionary history. We apply publicly available Bayesian analysis code to a $UBVRIJHK_{S}$ photometric catalog of the old open cluster NGC 188 to detect and characterize photometric binaries along the cluster main sequence. This technique has the advantage that it self-consistently handles photometric errors, missing data in various bandpasses, and star-by-star prior constraints on cluster membership. Simulations are used to verify uncertainties and quantify selection biases in our analysis, illustrating that among binaries with mass ratios >0.5, we recover the binary fraction to better than 7% in the mean, with no significant dependence on binary fraction and a mild dependence on assumed mass ratio distribution. Using our photometric catalog, we recover the majority (65%$\pm$11%) of spectroscopically identified main sequence binaries, including 8 of the 9 with spectroscopically measured mass ratios. Accounting for incompleteness and systematics, we derive a mass ratio distribution that rises toward lower mass ratios (within our $q >$0.5 analysis domain). We observe a raw binary fraction for solar-type main sequence stars with mass ratios $q >$0.5 of 42%$\pm$4%, independent of the assumed mass ratio distribution to within its uncertainties, consistent with literature values for old open clusters but significantly higher than the field solar-type binary fraction. We confirm that the binaries identified by our method are more concentrated than single stars, in agreement with previous studies, and we demonstrate that the binary nature of those candidates which remain unidentified spectroscopically is strongly supported by photometry from Gaia DR2., Comment: AJ accepted
