The Luchedu rock avalanche (LRA) that occurred in 1935 at the junction of Sichuan and Yunnan in Southwest China is a disaster chain of the rock slide, debris avalanche, and river blocking induced by heavy rainfall. The rock slide originated from the wedge formed by sheet metamorphic rocks on the fault zone on the left bank of the Jinsha River. After breaking away from the slope, the wedge disintegrated and cracked rapidly, forming debris and causing them to flow in fluidization along a 7.3 km path. After the obvious entrainment process and curve superelevation in the proximal area, the deposition reached 50.5 × 10 6 m3 in the distal area. The sedimentary structure of clasts has typical stratification characteristics. The types of sedimentary facies include carapace facies, body facies, and mixed facies. Inside the sedimentary structure, dense shear zones, liquefied intercalations, jigsaw structures, and directional arrangement of particles are observed. Through a detailed geological survey and DEM spatial analysis, the avalanche entrainment rate of LRA was determined as 1.2. The morphological fluctuation of basement lithology and gully path plays an important role in the long-distance movement. The rock fragments formed by metamorphic rocks with a primary schistosity structure can effectively reduce the energy loss in the internal shear process and significantly promote the laminar flow movement in the distal region of the avalanche. Therefore, as a giant rock avalanche formed by the evolution of specific metamorphic rocks, LRA results from the combination of macrohydrodynamics and microrock failure properties. Rock avalanche-induced air blasts are widespread, damaging, and deadly. They can add to the destructive potential of avalanches far beyond the avalanche zone, but no landslide risk assessment in practice to date has accounted for the potential air blast danger. Here, field investigations and numerical studies were employed to quantitively analyze the initiation and propagation mechanism of air blasts triggered by the 2008 Wenjia Valley rock avalanche in Sichuan, China. Our findings indicate that the most significant air blast triggered by the Wenjia Valley avalanche was near bends in the valley, with a maximum pressure of over 25 kPa and a maximum velocity of 73 m/s. The avalanche violently collided with the valley wall at bends, generating multiple destructive air blasts and avalanche deflection. Subsequently, the separated air blast propagated as inertia flows and caused huge forest destruction. A systematic parametric study combined with case studies was further performed to investigate the possible contribution of topography and sliding mass properties to the air blast power. Large avalanche volume and high velocity both appear to be necessary conditions to generate a destructive air blast, while the sudden topography change is also greatly influential. Our work provides new insights into the initiation and propagation of rock avalanche-induced air blasts, compelling to consider this sort of cascading effect during landslide risk assessment in mountainous regions. • Rock avalanche-induced air blasts can cause damage far beyond the sliding mass. • Large avalanche volume and high velocity are necessary conditions to generate powerful air blasts. • Geomorphology is influential in both air blast initiation and propagation. On August 14, 2020, it occurred a landslide-induced debris flow in Wangcang County, Sichuan Province, Southwest China, three people killed, and two houses destroyed. Behaved as a typical geohazard chain, it originated from a rockslide in marlstone, controlled initially by structural planes in rock mass, and evolved into a debris flow through successive geophysical process. This debris flow reached a run-out distance of 2050 m in the horizontal and 628 m in vertical direction. Remote sensing analysis, field survey, and laboratory tests were conducted to investigate its failure mechanism and dynamic characteristics. The results found that the source zone in the gully was 16.32 × 103 m2, with a volume of 317.52 × 103 m3. Interbedded marlstone with dense structural planes was one of controlling factors for the landslide failure. The continuous rainfall up to 315 mm during the previous 24 days and 32 mm at the date before the incident directly motivated rock slope failure. The contributions of topography, rock fragmentation, entrainment, and flow discharge for this process were discussed. It is found that changes in slope from 11° to 40° provided tremendous potential energy for the rock mass sliding with high speed and then disintegrating in traveling. Entrainment in the channel increased the fine content of the moving rocky mixture. In addition, the flow discharge changed the rheological properties of the mixture by adding seepage. These factors significantly affected the transformation process. Notably, the turning relief or confluence site may be accelerating this process. Landslides with large displacements are more dangerous than landslides with small displacements, because the first category causes more serious damages. In this paper, a new prediction method is introduced for rock planar slides with large displacements. The prediction model is not limited to a certain region but limited to a certain failure mechanism of a landslide. This case study was carried out in the red bed area, Nanjiang County, Sichuan Province, China, and validated in the red bed area of Yunyang and Fengjie Counties, Chongqing, China. The topographic factor T was proposed as a topographical indicator. The influence of the normalized rainfall R which is a combination of the duration of rainfall (D) and the average intensity (I) of rainfall was analyzed. A threshold value for rock planar sliding with large displacement was obtained by establishing a relationship between the T factor and the R factor. The primary probability factor P gives a final indication of the probability of rock planar sliding with large displacement. The prediction model is applied to the existing rock planar slides or the slopes with the presence of a number of preconditions for sliding. The prediction model obtained from Nanjiang County was validated successfully in the red bed area of the Yunyang and Fengjie Counties. A consequent slope, comprising weak planes in the same dip direction along the slope face, is the most dangerous type of rock slope. Herein, a consequent landslide that occurred on May 5, 2018, in Mabian County, Southwest China, was investigated. This landslide occurred in a region with a complex geological background and strong geological activity and is considered a typical consequent landslide. Field investigations and aerial photographic interpretations revealed that the rock mass slipped along the contact surface of the strongly and moderately weathered rock mass, triggered by continuous rainfall. A depth-integrated continuum method was used to study the dynamic process of the landslide. The applicability of the depth-integrated method was verified by comparing the moving boundary of the landslide extracted from a video with the simulation results. The results show that the velocity of the landslide first increased and then decreased from the top to the bottom of the landslide and reached a maximum of 21 m/s in the middle of the landslide. Based on this method, we predicted the potential danger zones and velocity distribution of unstable masses next to the Mabian landslide. On comparing the calculated results of a depth-integrated continuum method with the Scheidegger method, in the case of the Mabian landslide, a reduction factor λ was added to the Scheidegger formula to achieve a modified formula that determines the velocity of such consequent landslides relatively accurately. Two deadly rockslides, triggered by heavy precipitation and open-pit mining, were reported in Emei County, Sichuan Province, China, from 2011 to 2015. About 6.0 million m3 of rock detached from the upper slopes, pushed the pre-sliding deposits, and hit the opposite mountains at average velocity of 18 to 36 km/h. Detailed field investigation, geological mapping, and UAV aerial photographic interpretation are presented to analyze the failure mechanisms of the events. The results suggest that the high-speed consequent bedding rockslides were triggered by the failure of rock mass, which were influenced by the engineering activities and climate change. Key contributive factors were weathered and fragmented basalts that were affected by open-pit mining and frequent blasting, as well as the weak underlying tuffs with swell-shrink potential. Persistent rainfall was the direct trigger in initiating and reactivating the landslide. Water affected the slope stability by increasing the slope material’s unit weight and penetrating into joints and cracks to make the tuffs degrade and causing a reduction in effective stress. The mechanisms for the two landslide events are a high-speed regressive consequent bedding (RCB) rockslide in 2011 and a reactivated high-speed advancing consequent bedding (ACB) rockslide in 2015. This paper can provide an insight into large-scale consequent bedding rockslides associated with the interaction between the rainfall and open-pit mining slopes instabilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
