Simple Summary: The overexploitation of the bristle worm Diopatra neapolitana in Ria de Aveiro, a coastal lagoon in mainland Portugal, has led to a generalized decline of its local populations, as it is commonly used as live bait for sports fishing. Several management actions have been put forward to reduce the impact of its harvesting, although illegal poaching still threatens the sustainable use of this marine resource. In an attempt to verify if D. neapolitana was sourced from no-take zones or if it was indeed collected from the place of origin claimed by live bait traders, this study evaluated if the geographic origin of D. neapolitana could be correctly assigned using a combination of fatty acid profiles and elemental fingerprints of its whole body and jaws, respectively. Results showed that both fatty acid profiles and elemental fingerprints differ significantly among locations, making it possible to discriminate the geographic origin of D. neapolitana. Monitoring the negative impacts of trace metals is crucial to assess the health and stability of ecosystems. In salt marshes, halophyte plants were reported as possible bioaccumulators of these elements. The aim of this work was to explore the bioaccumulation potential of Bolboschoenus maritimus as a tool for monitoring the presence of metals in coastal environments. Bolboschoenus maritimus were collected from a brackish water lagoon, and the presence of the trace metals lead, cadmium, and nickel were seasonally evaluated in distinct parts of the plants, and in water and sediment samples. Lead was the trace metal with the highest concentration detected in water and sediments of the sampling site. The highest lead concentrations in B. maritimus were recorded in the spring season. The transport index indicated an accumulation of lead in the leaves of around 70% in the spring of 2009. Cadmium in leaves in spring and summer of 2009 reached values above 5 mg Cd. kg−1. Nickel was not detected in most samples collected. Bolboschoenus maritimus was considered an adequate biomonitor for lead and cadmium, since it bioaccumulates both metals with seasonally distinct results, as the bioaccumulation factor results indicated. Coastal municipalities and industries often discharge poorly treated wastewater into proximate marine and estuarine environments. The urban and/or effluent input can lead to eutrophication and lower water quality, as it holds high concentrations of nutrients and pollutants. One widely applied tool to increase effluent dispersion and direct it away from coastal areas, thus causing fewer impacts on human activities, is sea outfall. In Aveiro, Portugal, the São Jacinto sea outfall construction was completed in 1998; however, limited literature regarding the sea outfall's monitoring using satellite data is available. The methodology in this study involved collecting four years' worth (2016–2019) of satellite data to investigate visible traces of the interaction between the S. Jacinto sewage water mass and the Ria de Aveiro lagoon ecosystem using ocean color and spectral analysis, and producing new qualitative data regarding sea outfall plume dispersion monitoring through high-resolution Sentinel-2 imagery. The results showed a clear spectral signature of the sewage water mass, and a seasonal pattern was observed in which the plume was more evident in winter and autumn. Additionally, the coastal longshore current and the Aveiro lagoon's runoff were able to restrict the marine outfall's dispersion superficially. Ocean color data were revealed to be a factual and cost-effective tool to monitor the plume water. Finally, an exchange between the marine outfall water mass and Ria de Aveiro lagoon could happen in high tide under northern wind conditions. Marine plastic litter, originating from land-based sources, enters the marine environment by passing through coastal ecosystems such as lagoons and estuaries. As early life history stages (ELHS) of many commercially important fish species rely on these transitional areas as nursery grounds, we hypothesized that they encounter a spatial gradient of habitat quality and pollution from inner to outer parts of their vital environment. With sizes < 5 mm, anthropogenic particles (AP), among them microplastic (MP) fibers and fragments, entail a high bioavailability for ELHS of fish, potentially facilitating AP uptake at early developmental stages which may have implications for their survival and growth. This study provides a contextualization baseline between feeding preferences and uptake of AP by the white seabream Diplodus sargus (Linnaeus, 1758) in an estuarine nursery ground on the southern coast of Portugal. Juvenile fish showed a generalized, omnivorous feeding mode with differences in trophic resource utilization between individuals collected at distinct seagrass meadows in the lagoon. A total of 23.13% of the fish (n = 147) were detected with AP in the gastrointestinal tract, and the mean number of AP per AP-feeding individual was 1.64 ± 1.04, with anthropogenic fibers (n = 47) occurring more frequently than fragments (n = 9). Knowledge of the underlying factors for MP ingestion will be greatly enhanced by considering environmental conditions along with species-stage and life-stage specific feeding modes and prey preferences which shape the uptake probability of anthropogenic fibers and fragments. Moreover, it functions as an indirect greenhouse gas, influencing the lifetimes of potent greenhouse gases such as methane. Albeit being an overall source of atmospheric CO, the role of coastal regions in the marine cycling of CO and how its budget can be affected by anthropogenic activities, remain uncertain. Here, we present the first measurements of dissolved CO in the Ria Formosa Lagoon, an anthropogenically influenced system in southern Portugal. The dissolved CO concentrations in the surface layer ranged from 0.16 to 3.1 nmol L−1 with an average concentration of 0.75 ± 0.57 nmol L−1. The CO saturation ratio ranged from 1.7 to 32.2, indicating that the lagoon acted as a source of CO to the atmosphere in May 2021. The estimated average sea-to-air flux density was 1.53 μmol m−2 d−1, mainly fueled by CO photochemical production. Microbial consumption accounted for 83 % of the CO production, suggesting that the resulting CO emissions to the atmosphere were modulated by microbial consumption in the surface waters of the Ria Formosa Lagoon. The results from an irradiation experiment with aquaculture effluent water indicated that aquaculture facilities in the Ria Formosa Lagoon seem to be a negligible source of atmospheric CO. Fucus vesiculosus is a brown seaweed with applications in the food, pharmaceutic, and cosmetic industries. Among its most valuable bioactive compounds are the pigment fucoxanthin and polysaccharides (e.g., fucoidans). In this study, we profiled the photosynthetic pigments and carbohydrates of F. vesiculosus from six locations along the Ílhavo Channel in the Iberian coastal lagoon of Ria de Aveiro, Portugal. Photosynthetic performance (Fv/Fm), pigment, and carbohydrate concentrations were similar between locations, despite differences in environmental factors, such as salinity and periods of exposure to desiccation. Concentration of total carbohydrates (neutral sugars + uronic acids) averaged 418 mg g−1 dw. Fucose was the second most abundant neutral sugar, with an average concentration of 60.7 mg g−1 dw, indicating a high content of fucoidans. Photosynthetic pigments included chlorophylls a and c, β,β-carotene, and the xanthophylls fucoxanthin, violaxanthin, antheraxanthin, and zeaxanthin. Concentrations of fucoxanthin were higher than those reported for most brown macroalgae, averaging 0.58 mg g−1 dw (65% of total carotenoids). This study indicates that F. vesiculosus from Ria de Aveiro is a valuable macroalgal resource for aquaculture companies operating in the region, with considerable potential to yield high-value bioactive compounds. Coastal lagoons are among the most productive ecosystems in the world, and they provide a wide range of ecosystem services and resources. In the Ria Formosa (southern Portugal), phytoplankton production has rarely been addressed. The main goal of this study is thus to evaluate the variability of phytoplankton production and photosynthetic characteristics over the seasonal cycle and in different locations (landward, urban, intermediate, and seaward boundaries) of the Ria Formosa coastal lagoon, subjected to distinct natural and anthropogenic stressors. Primary production was evaluated using the 14C incorporation technique, and photosynthetic parameters were estimated by fitting photosynthesis-irradiance curves. Primary production showed significant seasonal variations, with higher values in the summer associated with lower euphotic depths, higher water temperatures, and higher nutrient concentrations. No spatial differences were found for primary production or photosynthetic parameters. Primary production values were lower than previous estimates, which reflects an improvement in water quality in the Ria Formosa, but values are higher than primary production estimates for other temperate coastal ecosystems, which reflects the highly productive nature of this coastal lagoon. Results of an application of a dispersive wave hydro-sediment-morphodynamic model in the western circulation cell of the Ria Formosa lagoon located in the Algarve region of the southern Portugal are presented. This area of interest has a couple of features that complicate the application of the dispersive wave model: (1) the area has a complex irregular geometry with a number of barrier islands that separate the lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean, artificial and naturally occurring tidal inlets, and a number of curling channels inside the lagoon that interconnect the inlets and serve as waterways between the lagoon settlements; (2) the tidal range in the area can reach up to 3.5 m; therefore, the terrain inside the lagoon is characterized by vast salt marshes and tidal flats, and the wetting-drying process is a key component of any hydrodynamic simulation in this area. A model representation of the area has been developed by generating an unstructured finite element mesh of the circulation cell, and collecting data on parameters that characterize the tidal waves in the area, and bottom friction and sediment transport models used in the simulations. The results of the simulations indicate that the dispersive wave model can be applied in coastal areas with nontrivial underlying physical processes, and complex irregular geometries. Moreover, the dispersive term of the model is capable of capturing additional flow characteristics that are otherwise not present in hydrodynamic simulations that involve the nonlinear shallow water equations; and these additional flow features can, in their turn, affect the resulting sediment transport and bed morphodynamic process simulations. Although Carcinus maenas as a species is widely studied, research focusing on fecundity is still scarce. The main objective of this study was to evaluate size-fecundity relationships across different lagoons and estuaries, along the Portuguese coast, to understand how the local environment affects reproductive patterns. Between 2019 and 2020, ovigerous females were collected from the Southern (Ria Formosa and Ria de Alvor), Central (Rio Sado) and Northern regions (Ria de Aveiro) of Portugal, and the fecundity of each female was estimated by counting and weighing eggs. Morphometric relationships (carapace width–egg counting; egg counting–egg weight; body wet weight–egg weight; carapace width–body wet weight) were inferred from 180 egg-bearing females with a carapace width between 26.96 and 61.25 mm. A positive correlation between fecundity and the morphological parameters was observed. Differences in fecundity were found among all systems, from northern to southern Portugal, varying between 22121 and 408538 eggs per female. Furthermore, a regional gradient was observed across regions, with lower temperature estuaries (Ria de Aveiro) displaying an increase in fecundity. The fecundity in Rio Sado was also affected by salinity. Fecundity differences across regions were associated with hydrodynamics, temperature, and salinity differences among systems. No statistically significant differences were observed between Carapace Width—Body Wet Weight regressions performed in each studied system, indicating that, contrary to fecundity, the somatic growth of C. maenas is not affected by latitudinal or environmental conditions. Coastal vegetated ecosystems such as saltmarshes and seagrasses are important sinks of organic carbon (OC) and total nitrogen (TN), with large global and local variability, driven by the confluence of many physical and ecological factors. Here we show that sedimentary OC and TN stocks of intertidal saltmarsh (Sporobolus maritimus) and seagrass (Zostera noltei) habitats increased between two- and fourfold along a decreasing flow velocity gradient in Ria Formosa lagoon (south Portugal). A similar twofold increase was also observed for OC and TN burial rates of S. maritimus and of almost one order of magnitude for Z. noltei. Stable isotope mixing models identify allochthonous particulate organic matter as the main source to the sedimentary pools in both habitats (39–68%). This is the second estimate of OC stocks and the first of OC burial rates in Z. noltei, a small, fast-growing species that is widely distributed in Europe (41,000 ha) and which area is presently expanding (8600 ha in 2000s). Its wide range of OC stocks (29–99 Mg ha−1) and burial rates (15–122 g m2 y−1) observed in Ria Formosa highlight the importance of investigating the drivers of such variability to develop global blue carbon models. The TN stocks (7–11 Mg ha−1) and burial rates (2–4 g m−2 y−1) of Z. noltei were generally higher than seagrasses elsewhere. The OC and TN stocks (29–101 and 3–11 Mg ha−1, respectively) and burial rates (19–39 and 3–5 g m−2 y−1) in S. maritimus saltmarshes are generally lower than those located in estuaries subjected to larger accumulation of terrestrial organic matter. Establishing a higher classification of bees based on morphology alone can fail to capture evolutionary relationships when morphological characters either vary very little between distantly related groups, or conversely vary greatly between closely related species. This problem is well represented in the subfamily Panurginae, for which a recent global revision based on phylogenomic data unexpectedly revealed that two Old World species previously placed in Camptopoeum Spinola and Flavipanurgus Warncke, are in fact most closely related to each other, and together form a sister group relationship to the remaining Flavipanurgus and Panurgus Panzer combined. To rectify this situation, we here establish an expanded phylogenomic data set of Old World Panurgini and re-assess generic and subgeneric concepts for the tribe. To solve the paraphyly of Camptopoeum and Flavipanurgus, we establish the new genus Halopanurgus gen. nov. containing the species H. baldocki (Wood & Cross), comb. nov. and H. fuzetus (Patiny), comb. nov., both of which are restricted to coastal sands, saltmarshes, and inland saline lagoons in the extreme south of Portugal and south-west of Spain. Re-evaluation of four recently used subgenera in Panurgus strongly supports a simplified classification of two subgenera; Pachycephalopanurgus Patiny, stat. rev. including Micropanurgus Patiny syn. nov., and Panurgus s. str. including Euryvalvus Patiny. Pachycephalopanurgus species seem to be oligoleges of Asteroideae (Asteraceae), whereas Panurgus s. str. may be oligoleges of Cichorieae (Asteraceae). Our findings reinforce the challenges of establishing a phylogenetically sound classification of Panurginae using morphology alone and illustrate that even in well-studied regions like Europe unrecognised genera can persist in underexplored corners of the continent. The main objective of this article is to understand the relationship that the residents of Fuzeta, a fishing village in southern Portugal, establish with the Ria Formosa Natural Park, through the concept of place attachment. Recent studies on the relationship between individuals and places highlight the importance of this place attachment, but despite its abundant use, it remains in a stage of theoretical underdevelopment. Furthermore, the lack of research on the attachment to Portuguese Natural Parks endowed this research with an exploratory character and led to the need to a new definition of the concept of place attachment and to the construction of a broader analytical model. The attribution and maintenance of meanings and values to the places, implies not only the relationship of people with the physical elements of the territory but also the interactions of individuals with each other, their sharing of history and culture, and other aspects that can either strengthen or weaken people's attachments to places. We propose in this article a new analytical model that includes, at the same time, the factors that participate in the attribution of meanings and values to places, and also those that participate in the place attachment process whether in a contributory way or in a disruptive way. The empirical study presented in this article adopted a qualitative interpretative methodology through the use of semi-structured in-depth interviews. Thus, 26 Fuzeta residents engaged in leisure or professional activities in the Ria Formosa lagoon were interviewed. The interviewees were workers from several professional activities that use the lagoon - such as fishermen and shellfish catchers, restaurant and hospitality workers, as well as those engaged in leisure activities such as sunbathing, recreational fishing, the catching of shellfish and crustaceans, hiking, boating, windsurfing and camping. The results indicate that the inhabitants of Fuzeta have a very strong and multidimensional attachment to the Ria Formosa that is related to the meanings, emotions, feelings they attribute to it and mainly to the perception of its irreplaceability. Sedimentary organic matter (OM) origin and molecular composition provide useful information to understand carbon cycling in coastal wetlands. Core sediments from threors' Contributionse transects along Ria Formosa lagoon intertidal zone were analysed using analytical pyrolysis (Py-GC/MS) to determine composition, distribution and origin of sedimentary OM. The distribution of alkyl compounds (alkanes, alkanoic acids and alkan-2-ones), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), lignin-derived methoxyphenols, linear alkylbenzenes (LABs), steranes and hopanes indicated OM inputs to the intertidal environment from natural—autochthonous and allochthonous—as well as anthropogenic. Several n-alkane geochemical indices used to assess the distribution of main OM sources (terrestrial and marine) in the sediments indicate that algal and aquatic macrophyte derived OM inputs dominated over terrigenous plant sources. The lignin-derived methoxyphenol assemblage, dominated by vinylguaiacol and vinylsyringol derivatives in all sediments, points to large OM contribution from higher plants. The spatial distributions of PAHs (polyaromatic hydrocarbons) showed that most pollution sources were mixed sources including both pyrogenic and petrogenic. Low carbon preference indexes (CPI > 1) for n-alkanes, the presence of UCM (unresolved complex mixture) and the distribution of hopanes (C29–C36) and steranes (C27–C29) suggested localized petroleum-derived hydrocarbon inputs to the core sediments. Series of LABs were found in most sediment samples also pointing to domestic sewage anthropogenic contributions to the sediment OM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite worldwide proliferation of the genus Caulerpa and subsequent effects on benthic communities, little is known about the nutritional physiology of the Caulerpales. Here, we investigated the uptake rates of ammonium, nitrate, amino acids, and phosphate through the fronds and rhizoids + stolon, the internal translocation of nitrogen, and developed a nitrogen budget for the rapidly spreading Caulerpa prolifera in Ria Formosa lagoon, southern Portugal. Caulerpa prolifera acquired nutrients by both aboveground and belowground parts at similar rates, except nitrate, for which fronds showed 2‐fold higher uptake rates. Ammonium was the preferential nitrogen source (81% of the total nitrogen acquisition), and amino acids, which accounted for a significant fraction of total N acquisition (19%), were taken up at faster rates than nitrate. Basipetal translocation of 15N incorporated as ammonium was nearly 3‐fold higher than acropetal translocation, whereas 15N translocation as nitrate and amino acids was smaller but equal in either direction. The estimated total nitrogen acquisition by C. prolifera was 689 μmol · m−2 · h−1, whereas the total nitrogen requirement for growth was 672 μmol · m−2 · h−1. The uptake of ammonium and amino acids by belowground parts accounted for the larger fraction of the total nitrogen acquisition of C. prolifera and is sufficient to satisfy the species nitrogen requirements for growth. This may be one reason explaining the fast spreading of the seaweed in the bare sediments of Ria Formosa where it does not have any macrophyte competitors and the concentration of nutrients is high. Ria Formosa is a productive coastal lagoon, located on the south coast of Portugal, and represents the largest national producer of shellfish bivalves (ca. 90% production). This ecosystem is subjected to various anthropogenic pressures, including the discharge of urban wastewater treatment plants (UWWTP), which impacts the lagoon water quality. This study aimed to assess the impact of alterations in the functioning of two UWWTP on the water quality of Ria Formosa, based on chemical variables, phytoplankton composition (including potential harmful species) and faecal contamination. During the period September 2018 - October 2019, water sampling was conducted along dominant longitudinal gradients of the effluent dispersion from the discharge point (1-2 km), for two sites: a decommissioned (OP) and a modified (FO) UWWTP. After modification, the later started receiving a higher influent volume (ca. 40%), under an innovative technology system (biological treatment in aerobic granular sludge). Based on chemical water quality variables, phytoplankton and indicators of faecal contamination, a significant improvement along the longitudinal gradient from the discharge point was observed after OP decommissioning. This improvement was fast, being detected two months after decommissioning, positively affecting areas used as shellfish farming grounds. However, distribution patterns of bacteriological indicators and regular shellfish harvesting interdictions suggested an alternative source of faecal contamination after OP decommissioning. At FO, both chemical variables and bacteriological indicators of faecal contamination revealed a slower improvement, only six-months after the UWWTP alteration. Before that, increased and highly variable ammonium, chlorophyll a concentration, phytoplankton abundances and Escherichia coli densities, revealed an unstable phase. Seagrass meadows provide several ecological functions that improve the overall ecological health of coastal systems and therefore, it is urgent to promote the restoration of such habitats. In Ria de Aveiro, a coastal lagoon in the Atlantic Coast of Portugal, a restoration initiative was responsible for transplanting the dwarf eelgrass Zostera noltei into a highly degraded area. This eelgrass was used as a nature-based solution (NbS) to mitigate some of the impacts of historical mercury contamination. Comparisons of key-species features (density and biomass), and some community-derived indicators (total density and biomass, species richness and Shannon-Wiener index) between the transplanted seagrass patch, their bare vicinities, and their counterpart habitats on the source area, provided signs of the effectiveness of the restoration action on the benthic communities' recovery. Indicators were higher within the restored meadow, and biomass derived indicators of the restored meadow were similar to the source meadow. • Zostera noltei was used as a nature-based solution to mitigate Hg contamination. • The impact was assessed on key-species, and in community-derived indicators. • Indicators improved in the restored meadow, when compared with the adjacent habitat. • Biomass on the restored meadow was on a par with the source meadow. • Indicators after one year of the transplant are already promising. Dissolved gaseous mercury (DGM) production was examined in relation to ultraviolet radiation within a marine aquaculture site in the contaminated Marano and Grado Lagoon (Italy). The measured rates of DGM production relative to time elapsed (17.06 and 20.68 pg h−1, respectively) were substantially (6–20 times) higher than what has been observed in other marine Hg studies. We measured similar levels of DGM relative to dissolved total mercury (THgD) (0.84%–8.91%) at these sites in comparison to uncontaminated marine sites, however relative to other moderately-contaminated marine sites in Portugal the % DGM/THgD was high. These results suggest a substantial capacity for Hg volatilization from these highly contaminated lagoons to the atmosphere due to photoreduction mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Foz do Almargem and Salgados are two small, intermittently closed and open lakes and lagoons (ICOLLs) located in the Portuguese southern coast, both remaining isolated from the sea throughout great part of the year. Based on environmental and biotic parameters, the first lagoon was classified as mesotrophic, with a greater marine influence, while the second one was classified as hypereutrophic. The plankton relations and seasonal variation were examined in both lagoons aiming at understanding the biological patterns here present and relating them with the environmental conditions, as well as inferring possible top-down or bottom-up control in the communities, determining also in which alternative trophic state they are: a clean water lagoon, with submerged macrophyte vegetation; or a turbid water lagoon, with only phytoplankton as primary producer. The plankton community greatly differs in the two lagoons. Salgados lagoon presented extremely high concentrations of phytoplankton, which form blooms throughout the year, mostly composed by potential harmful organisms. This lagoon also had very high densities of zooplankton. Phytoplankton and zooplankton density was always lower in Foz do Almargem. Rotifera, Ostracoda and Cladocera dominated the Zooplankton community in Salgados. In Foz do Almargem, Rotifera also dominates, together with other groups, such as annelids, crustaceans and mollusks larvae, which denotes a stronger marine influence. In both lagoons, organisms with body size inferior to 100 μm mainly composed the zooplankton. In Salgados lagoon, excess nutrient load induced a high density of phytoplankton, which is utilized by a high density of zooplankton, following a bottom-up control model. The lagoon clearly showed a permanent turbid-water alternative state due to excess nutrients. On Foz do Almargem, the frequent openings of the inlet throughout the wet season caused strong physical disturbance, which prevented the development of a stable planktonic community. As filter feeders, marine bivalves inhabiting estuarine and coastal areas are directly exposed to microplastics (MPs) in water. To assess whether MPs number, and their shape, size, colour, and polymer type present in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) and cockles (Cerastoderma edule) varied over one year, bivalves were collected over the year of 2019 in the lower part of the coastal Aveiro lagoon, Portugal. After extraction from the bivalve's whole-body soft tissues, a subset of the visually inspected particles was randomly separated for identification using the Fourier-transform mid-infrared (FT-MIR) spectroscopy. A fraction of the inspected particles, 26–32% of particles >100 μm, and 59–100% of smaller ones were confirmed as MPs. Concentrations varied within the intervals of 0.77–4.3 items g−1 in mussels and 0.83–5.1 items g−1 in cockles, with the lowest values observed in January. In winter, the accumulation of large-sized fibers was composed of a mixture of plastic types, which contrasted against the most abundant MPs in summer consisting mainly of polyethylene of diverse size classes and shapes. Temperature decrease registered in winter might have triggered a lower filtration rate, resulting in lower MPs concentrations in the whole-soft body tissues of organisms. Different properties of MPs found in bivalves between January–February and August–September appear to reflect changes in the characteristics of MPs available in the Aveiro lagoon. The Ria de Aveiro is an important coastal lagoon for wildlife in Portugal, where the production of bivalves reaches approximately 2700 tons annually. However, the illegal overfishing of bivalves is frequent in this lagoon, which causes critical changes in the ecosystem. In this study, using a developed food-web model (Ecopath model), the ecological carrying capacity (ECC) and maximum sustained yield (MSY) of the Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum were estimated, and the effects of further increases in clam biomass on other species were investigated. The results showed that 1) the current biomass and legal catch of R. philippinarum do not yet exceed the ECC (172.40 tons km−2) or the MSY (86.20 tons km−2 year−1) in Ria de Aveiro; 2) the harvested Manila clams of the MSY represent removing from the ecosystem ∼ 581 tons carbon (C) and ∼83 tons nitrogen (N) annually, with substantial ecological and economic implications; and 3) a further increase in the biomass levels of this species may cause the ecotrophic efficiency of other groups to become unrealistic, potentially leading to decreases in ecosystem transfer efficiency, biodiversity and health. Anthropogenic pressures put at jeopardy ecosystem services (ES) provided by natural habitats. Ecosystem Based Management (EBM) approaches can support policymakers dealing with physical, chemical, and biological stresses caused by high-risk water pollution (HRWP) and sudden-accidental pollution (SAP). The objective of this study is to evaluate how alarming HRWP pressures might become in fragile marine, coastal, estuarine, and freshwater socio-ecological systems (MCEF-SES) surrounded by heavily industrialized and urbanized areas. To this end a spatially explicit analysis, using the InVEST-Habitat Risk Assessment (InVEST-HRA) model in combination with expert judgement from researchers from various fields, is performed. An application is provided for the case of the Ria de Aveiro (RdA) coastal lagoon in Portugal. Results show high spatial variance of HRWP hazards across RdA, with one major multi-layer risk hotspot at the center of the research area and a second patch of multiple risk hotspots towards the North of RdA. Salines emerge as the most threatened habitat followed by Intertidal flats and Saltmarshes. The most significant water pollution risk sources contributing to Salines cumulative risk are Fossil fuel processing, storage and sale units, Industrial units, Aquaculture, and the Marinas. Industries involving dangerous substances in the region threaten primarily Watercourses. This study confirms the InVEST-HRA model in combination with expert judgement is a transparent and easily replicable approach to build ES-based knowledge about habitat risks threatening MCEF-SES in a Natura 2000 site heavily pressured by HRWP hazards. After further valuation analysis, pondering gains and losses from regional development and environmental protection, this knowledge can support the planning and management of coastal areas and the prioritization of pollution abatement interventions. In particular, by estimating the loss that HRWP causes in the value of ecosystem services, defining HRWP abatement policies, assessing the effectiveness, costs and benefits of those abatement policies and, ultimately, evaluating the results for the well-being of local communities through global efficiency analysis, cost-benefit analysis or cost-effectiveness analysis. A high quality data collection has been carried out between 2004 and 2014 to develop the first trophic ECOPATH model for the functioning of the sub and intertidal zones of Ria de Aveiro. This schematic representation allows the characterization of the most important compartments of biomass and flows of energy representing the functioning of the ecosystem, and can be used in the fields of decision-making and management. The model considered 26 functional groups from primary producers to top-predators and two different fisheries (artisanal and leisure), and showed that Ria de Aveiro is a dynamic ecosystem dominated by a high biomass of primary producers, where the transference of energy among compartments is, to a large extent, accomplished through the detritus path. The model also provides several ecological indicators on the state of maturity of the ecosystem, showing that Ria de Aveiro is in an intermediate state of maturity with a relatively complex food web and resilience to environmental changes. As discussed, this state of maturity is probably determined by human action pervading the system to advance in the expectable ecological succession of a coastal lagoon. These aspects, together with indicators of elevated fishing pressure and predation within the system, underline the necessity of controlling illegal extraction activities and monitoring the biomass of the main functional groups of the system, especially top predators, in order to keep the functioning of the ecosystem of Ria de Aveiro in its current condition. Coastal systems are very important interface areas between land and sea, subject to constant changes motivated by both natural and anthropogenic factors. In addition to the increasing modifications imposed by human activities, natural processes are also being altered as a result of climate change. Important consequences of climate change in coastal systems are sea level rise (SLR) and changes in freshwater discharge, due to modifications in rainfall patterns and air temperature. The aim of this work was to assess the impact of climate changes on the suspended sediment dynamics in a coastal system (the Ria de Aveiro, Portugal). A sediment transport model was implemented for this system and results used to investigate the impact of SLR and rivers discharge, separately and combined, considering a reference and five future scenarios. Maps of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and sediment fluxes along the tidal cycle were analysed for each future scenario and compared with the reference scenario. In general, the highest changes on net sediment balance (difference between flood and ebb fluxes) are predicted for the scenario that only considers changes in river discharges, with a decrease of 33% relatively to the reference scenario. Combining changes in both river discharges and mean sea level (MSL), differences are attenuated, with a decrease of 6% in net sediment balance. This work introduces graphical methods documenting density, diversity (species richness combined with heterogeneity) and similarity in combined diagrams for estimating the influence of environmental and taphonomic factors in living (LAs) and dead (DAs) assemblages. In this paper, the diagrams compare: 1) densities per 1 g of sediment expressed in cubic squares; 2) diversities based on rarefaction species richness (x-axis) and Shannon H rarefaction (y-axis), both extended to infinity by the logistic Hull equation, and 3) similarity diagrams based on cosine measures (x-axis) and Spearman correlation coefficients (y-axis). Diagrams were exemplified for LAs and DAs found at 53 stations along channels and intertidal areas of the Aveiro Lagoon (Portugal). Eight 'routes' characterized by different trends in the distribution of the analyzed biotic parameters were recognized in six regions of the Aveiro Lagoon: 'port area', 'central lagoon', 'northeast lagoon', 'northern and southern extremities of the lagoon' and 'city area'. In addition, Detrended Correspondence Analyses (DCA) based on diversity diagrams were performed to show the influence of environmental parameters, especially grain size, salinity, and pH, on the average species composition in each route. The comparative diagrams allow deduction about the impact of parameters that simultaneously affect LAs and DAs, such as hydrodynamics, post-mortem tests dissolution, physicochemical parameters, excessive contribution of organic matter, oxygen depletion, and pollution by metals. Coastal areas, such as estuaries and coastal lagoons, are among the most endangered aquatic ecosystems due to the intense anthropogenic activities occurring in their vicinity. These areas are highly threatened by climate change-related factors as well as pollution, especially due to their limited water exchange. Ocean warming and extreme weather events, such as marine heatwaves and rainy periods, are some of the consequences of climate change, inducing alterations in the abiotic parameters of seawater, namely temperature and salinity, which may affect the organisms as well as the behaviour of some pollutants present in water. Lithium (Li) is an element widely used in several industries, especially in the production of batteries for electronic gadgets and electric vehicles. The demand for its exploitation has been growing drastically and is predicted a large increase in the coming years. Inefficient recycling, treatment and disposal results in the release of Li into the aquatic systems, the consequences of which are poorly understood, especially in the context of climate change. Considering that a limited number of studies exist about the impacts of Li on marine species, the present study aimed to assess the effects of temperature rise and salinity changes on the impacts of Li in clams (Venerupis corrugata) collected from the Ria de Aveiro (coastal lagoon, Portugal). Clams were exposed for 14 days to 0 μg/L of Li and 200 μg/L of Li, both conditions under different climate scenarios: 3 different salinities (20, 30 and 40) at 17 °C (control temperature); and 2 different temperatures (17 and 21 °C) at salinity 30 (control salinity). Bioconcentration capacity and biochemical alterations regarding metabolism and oxidative stress were investigated. Salinity variations had a higher impact on biochemical responses than temperature increase, even when combined with Li. The combination of Li with low salinity (20) was the most stressful treatment, provoking increased metabolism and activation of detoxification defences, suggesting possible imbalances in coastal ecosystems in response to Li pollution under extreme weather events. These findings may ultimately contribute to implement environmentally protective actions to mitigate Li contamination and preserve marine life. Estuaries and coastal lagoons are naturally stressed and highly variable ecosystems, and are also frequently exposed to strong anthropogenic pressures. Such pressures can be particularly pronounced in small systems such as the Ria de Alvor, a small tidal lagoon in southern Portugal. The Ria de Alvor is a priority area for conservation, being a RAMSAR wetland of international importance since 1996 and is part of the European Ecological Network, Natura 2000 . Nevertheless, intensive anthropogenic uses exert increasing pressures on its ecological features, causing stresses and challenges which are addressed in this paper. The resources that the Ria de Alvor provides are both marine and terrestrial in nature, and are subject to various kinds of exploitation. Urban, industrial and tourist developments, as well as agriculture and animal rearing, have resulted in habitat loss and change, altered morphology and hydrodynamics, and the discharge of effluents into the system. This paper reviews the key features and issues existing in the Ria and highlights the need for more research into this and other small estuaries and their management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to assess the impact of trace element concentrations in fish assemblages of a recovering coastal lagoon. Fish, water and sediment were sampled in winter and summer in the Ria de Aveiro (Portugal). Multivariate analyses were used to examine the relationship between fish assemblages and environmental variables (physical-chemical parameters, contaminants and sediment grain size). In winter, fish density and biomass were mainly affected by the water turbidity, while Li concentration in the water column was found to be significant for fish biomass. During summer, a significant relationship was found between fish density and temperature, Hg, Li and Zn concentration in the sediment. These contaminants were mainly associated with the historically contaminated area, were Liza spp. and Dicentrarchus labrax appeared as dominant species. Environmental variables were not significant for fish biomass. The historical contamination in the Ria de Aveiro still seems to exert some influence on fish community structure. Cadmium (Cd) is considered a priority hazardous substance under the European Community Directive 2013/39 due to its ecotoxicity. The ragworm Hediste diversicolor (O.F. Müller, 1776), a common species in estuaries and coastal lagoons, plays an important ecological role in these ecosystems and is a suitable bioindicator of environmental chemical contamination. In this study, H. diversicolor was chosen as an ecotoxicological model with the aim of evaluating the responses to Cd contamination, considering a multi-biomarker approach (mortality, biometry, behaviour, Cd bioaccumulation, oxidative stress and damage, and energy metabolism). Also, the hypothesis of different tolerances resulting in different responses was evaluated, by collecting worms from three systems distinctly impacted by metal contamination (Mondego estuary, Óbidos Lagoon and Sado estuary – Portugal). Animals were exposed under laboratory conditions to cadmium (10, 50 and 100 µg/L), for 10 days. Significant differences were observed in responses amongst worms originating from the different sites. Organisms from the less impacted systems revealed greater effects on mortality, biomass decrease and burrowing behaviour, as well as higher bioaccumulation potential, after exposure to Cd. Biochemical and behaviour impairments were observed as a consequence of Cd exposure, although not in a concentration-dependant manner. The results obtained in this study reinforce the importance of integrating endpoint responses, at the individual and sub-individual levels, to assess potential changes induced by pollutants in the physiological status and fitness of H. diversicolor and help to predict what their ecological consequences might be. Natural radioactive tracer-based assessments of basin-scale submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) are well developed. However, SGD takes place in different modes and the flow and discharge mechanisms involved occur over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. Quantifying SGD while discriminating its source functions therefore remains a major challenge. However, correctly identifying both the fluid source and composition is critical. When multiple sources of the tracer of interest are present, failure to adequately discriminate between them leads to inaccurate attribution and the resulting uncertainties will affect the reliability of SGD solute loading estimates. This lack of reliability then extends to the closure of local biogeochemical budgets, confusing measures aiming to mitigate pollution. Here, we report a multi-tracer study to identify the sources of SGD, distinguish its component parts and elucidate the mechanisms of their dispersion throughout the Ria Formosa -- a seasonally hypersaline lagoon in Portugal. We combine radon budgets that determine the total SGD (meteoric C recirculated seawater) in the system with stable isotopes in water (δ²H, δ18O), to specifically identify SGD source functions and characterize active hydrological pathways in the catchment. Using this approach, SGD in the Ria Formosa could be separated into two modes, a net meteoric water input and another involving no net water transfer, i.e., originating in lagoon water re-circulated through permeable sediments. The former SGD mode is present occasionally on a multi-annual timescale, while the latter is a dominant feature of the system. In the absence of meteoric SGD inputs, seawater recirculation through beach sediments occurs at a rate of ~ 1.4 x 106 m³ day-1. This implies that the entire tidal-averaged volume of the lagoon is filtered through local sandy sediments within 100 days (~ 3.5 times a year), driving an estimated nitrogen (N) load of ~ 350 Ton N yr-1 into the system as NO3-. Land-borne SGD could add a further ~ 61 Ton N yr-1 to the lagoon. The former source is autochthonous, continuous and responsible for a large fraction (59 %) of the estimated total N inputs into the system via non-point sources, while the latter is an occasional allochthonous source capable of driving new production in the system. The sedimentary record of fossil coastal lagoons is an under-explored archive of environmental change in ancient coastal domains. The significant continentality of coastal lagoons, the small volumes of their water bodies, very shallow depths and intermittent connectivity to oceanic aquafacies all result in a highly complex depositional system. The matrix micrite chemostratigraphy (carbon and oxygen isotope ratios) of two mid-Cenomanian shallow coastal lagoon sections in the western Lusitanian Basin, Portugal, are here presented in comparison to the geochemistry of different diagenetic carbonate materials. Geochemical evidence is placed against independent data from field observations, sedimentology, microfacies analysis, and ostracod palaeoecology. Marine ingressions and coastal lagoonal environments are recorded both in sedimentological, micropalaeontological and geochemical data sets. Intervals of more open, marine conditions are evidenced by overall higher (0 to 2‰) carbon and less 18 O-depleted (− 3‰) isotope ratios. The opposing pattern is observed for periods of more restricted lagoonal conditions. The combination of a detailed ostracod palaeoecology with geochemical and sedimentological findings is considered a strength of this paper as it allowed to disentangle the complex geochemical signals of ancient coastal lagoonal deposits. Phytoplankton community' dynamics were studied in Salgados coastal lagoon in order to evaluate the effects of excessive organic loads and also physical stress caused by the irregular opening of the lagoon. Salgados is a hypereutrophic intermittently open coastal lagoon, which received freshwater inputs from small rivers and from a wastewater treatment plant. Cyanophyceae dominated the phytoplankton communities most of the time; Bacillariophyceae became the main taxonomic group in winter when the lagoon was closed; Chlorophyceae was the major class in early summer; pico-nano flagellate algae accounted for a high percentage of total phytoplankton during spring. Potentially harmful taxa were observed during most of the sampling periods, forming blooms and accounting for a considerable percentage of total phytoplankton abundance. A strong differentiation among dry and wet seasons could be noticed. The dry season was dominated by Microsystis aeruginosa , Rhodomonas sp., pico-nano flagellate algae, Cyclotella spp. and Planktothrix sp., while the wet season, although still with the presence of Microsystis aeruginosa , was dominated by Dolichospermum spiroides . The best environmental variables explaining stations patterns and based on phytoplankton taxa were days of isolation, pH, and salinity. Temperature, cumulative rain and total phosphorus were also related with species and stations patterns. The high nutrient load in Salgados lagoon promoted the development and persistence of harmful algae blooms. Proper management of coastal lagoons involves not only the control of direct discharges of nutrients, but also of other factors, including water level and communication with the sea. This study describes the simultaneous quantification of 56 pesticides in surface coastal water, supported by the development and validation of a gas chromatography (GC)–ion trap (IT) mass spectrometry (MS) method. Samples (500 mL) were pre-concentrated 2500 times by solid phase extraction (OASISTMHLB). The compounds were identified and quantified, within 35 minutes, by GC tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) and GC-MS, respectively. The methodology proved to be highly specific for all target pesticides, with an average linearity of 0.99. Detection limits and recovery rates ranged from 0.4 to 1.3 ng L−1and 71% to 120%, respectively. The performance of the method was checked using water samples collected from nine sampling sites along the Ria Formosa Lagoon Natural Park (south of Portugal, n = 54) in each season (2010). The total annual concentrations of all pesticides in each category (fungicides, herbicides and insecticides) were 1.4, 0.6 and 9.0 µg L−1, respectively. Moreover, 89% of the pesticides tested for were detected, 84% could be quantified and 25% had concentrations above the European recommended levels (2013/39/EU). The highest total loads of pesticides were found in the spring, which is in agreement with their seasonal application. Physicochemical parameters such as, nitrites, nitrates, ammonia and phosphates, also indicate poor water quality, supporting the fact that the Ria Formosa lagoon actually needs an effective monitoring programme for effective preservation of its natural reserve status. A significant decline in the seahorse populations in the Ria Formosa has been recently reported and holdfast availability suggested as a particularly important variable that influences the abundance of the long-snouted seahorse ( Hippocampus guttulatus ) and the short-snouted seahorse ( H . hippocampus ). In order to test the usefulness of artificial holdfast units (AHU) to enhance habitat recovery, several of these structures were deployed at four different locations with distinct environmental characteristics and surveyed for seahorse abundance during a 6 month period. All AHU were colonized by seahorses within a month after deployment, reaching a maximum density of 13.1 seahorse m − 2 at one of the sites. Results suggest that these AHU have the potential to aggregate seahorses in damaged habitats but have limited effect when placed close to natural high complexity habitats. The results from this experiment provide useful guidance in the use of artificial structures to improve degraded seahorse habitats in other similar situations, as part of management plans for seahorse population recovery. Comparisons of three sets of surveys in the Ria Formosa Lagoon, Portugal, over a 13 year period (2001-2002, 2008-2009 and 2010-2013) revealed significant population fluctuations in at least one of the two seahorse (Hippocampinae) species living there, and that those fluctuations were potentially associated with habitat changes in the lagoon. After a significant decline between the first two survey periods (2001-2002 v. 2008-2009), long-snouted seahorse Hippocampus guttulatus populations increased significantly between 2008-2009 surveys and new 2010-2013 surveys. There were no significant differences in H. guttulatus populations between the 2001-2002 and 2010-2013 surveys. In contrast, there were no significant differences in short-snouted seahorse Hippocampus hippocampus densities among the 16 sites surveyed throughout the three sampling periods, although the ability to detect any change was hampered by the low densities of this species in all time periods. Fluctuations in H. guttulatus densities were positively correlated with the percentage of holdfast coverage, but with none of the other environmental variables tested. These results highlight the importance of holdfast availability in maintaining stable seahorse populations. While population fluctuations are certainly more promising than a consistent downward decline, such extreme fluctuations observed for seahorses in the Ria Formosa Lagoon could still leave these two species vulnerable to any additional stressors, particularly during low density periods. Sediment, suspended particulate matter (SPM), water and clam Scrobicularia plana samples were collected in a temperate coastal lagoon with anthropogenic impact. Arsenic levels in sediments, SPM and water presented a spatial concentration gradient. A significant linear regression between arsenic levels in S. plana and SPM suggests particulate matter as the main route of arsenic exposure. Trend analysis showed that total arsenic concentrations in S. plana generally increased with size class, reflecting lifespan bioaccumulation. Despite being efficient in reflecting environmental contamination levels, results suggest that arsenic accumulation by S. plana may not be a passive process, given the proportionally lower accumulation in high contamination areas. Annual bioaccumulation rates ranged from 5.6 to 1 mg kg year, suggesting a possible toxicity risk for individuals of the most contaminated area. Óbidos Lagoon is classified as a sensible system according to the eutrophication criteria in the Portuguese Decree-Law 149/2004, which transpose the standards of Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (Council Directive 91/271/EEC) concerning urban waste water treatment. From September 2005 onwards, the urban loads of five Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) were deviated to a submarine outfall to prevent water degradation and improve the lagoon trophic state (LTS). This paper evaluated the LTS after urban loads diversion, testing the hypothesis behind the management decision. First, the loads reaching the lagoon were determined with the Harp-Nut guidelines and watershed modeling. Then, the water quality in the lagoon was simulated with a hydro-ecological model and compared with measured data. Finally, management scenarios corresponding to nutrient loads reduction were tested to determine hypothesis-driven LTS. Results showed that the loads from pig farms should be diverted instead of the WWTP, to improve the LTS and achieve a 'Good/Bad' status. The proposed method stresses the importance of integrated modeling tools in the Water Framework Directive, given their skill in testing various hypothesis, and ultimately ruling out inadequate management decisions before implementation. The Ria Formosa is a shallow and multi-inlet coastal lagoon system in southern Portugal, with six permanent connections to the Atlantic Ocean. The western sector of Ria Formosa comprises three of the main inlets, Ancão, Faro-Olhão and Armona, which contribute ~90% of the total tidal prism of the lagoon. Of those three inlets, Ancão and Faro-Olhão supply the minimum and maximum contribution for these exchanges, respectively. Four field surveys were conducted at these two inlets during the upwelling season (from spring to autumn) to determine the influence of upwelling process upon the hydrographic characteristics in spring tidal conditions: i) spring 2009 (Ancão inlet), ii) autumn 2011 (both inlets) and iii) spring 2012 (Faro-Olhão inlet). Water samples were collected hourly (at three levels), along complete semi-diurnal tidal cycles, to determine chlorophyll a (chl a) and nutrient concentrations. At the same time, the water velocity was measured along the cross section to estimate the tidal prism, nutrients and chl a transports. Ancão inlet contributes a much lower volume to the total tidal prisms than Faro-Olhão inlet. The temporal data variability reveals that chl a and nutrient dynamics through these inlets depends not only on the tidal influence and characteristics of the boundary waters, but also on the intensity of the atmospheric and oceanic forcings acting on the adjacent coastal zone. During pulses of coastal upwelling events, more evident in spring season (mainly in April 2009 and May 2012), the two inlets imported chl a and phosphate. In contrast, in the absence of upwelling conditions, due to wind reversals and/or long periods of wind relaxation, both inlets exported nitrate and phosphate, fertilizing the coastal ocean. However, the Ria Formosa is a highly complex hydrodynamic system, and hydrographic temporal differences can be expected at different scales as a result of changes in: i) morphological configuration of the natural inlets, ii) interconnectivity of channels, and iii) the seasonal meteorological and oceanographic conditions. Oil spill accidents can be caused by several risk factors associated to maritime transport and port activities, which cannot always be predicted or controlled. Therefore, it is essential to support prevention and contingency plans, whose effectiveness is crucial to produce adequate responses and minimize resulting impacts. Ria de Aveiro (Portugal) is a wide coastal lagoon, within a densely populated area, representing a concentration of important biodiversity resources and several economic activities. This paper presents alternative methodologies to support the optimization of civil protection assets in the occurrence of oil spill events and the results of their application on a section area of the Aveiro Lagoon, using an established geographic information system database containing crucial data. The presented methodologies are based on the Environmental Sensitivity Index developed by the North American National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (USA) and the Global Vulnerability Index which were applied on the Bay of Biscay (Spain). However, during the development of this work, neither of these methodologies was considered to entirely assess the study area in its full extent, which led to the need to adapt and define a bespoke approach. The introduced changes include extra categories in shoreline classification, an adapted physical vulnerability index for coastal lagoons, differentiated aspects for highly protected status areas, qualitative assessment of socioeconomic features and an access and operability index created to support emergency operation response. The resulting maps are the subject of analysis, in which considerations regarding control and cleanup methods are introduced, together with guidelines for further integration in local risk management strategies. Historical information on cockle landings and studies on local knowledge on cockle fishing, zoology, and ecology in the Ria de Aveiro remain incomplete. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the current conditions of artisanal fisheries in Europe, understanding the dynamics of this activity has become even more necessary. Therefore, this case study sought to investigate the changes that have taken place in recent cockle fishing decades and verify the degree of contentment of these fishers with the rules for cockle fishing during the current pandemic period. LEK showed a downward trend in cockle stock on a time scale of around 60 years. Members of these fishing villages have not experienced the shifting baseline syndrome. This traditional fishery proved susceptible to the intense fishing effort, increased fishers, decreased commercial-sized adult individuals, and increased incidence of biotoxins and diseases in the cockle. Fishers were not content with the measures and circumstances imposed on cockle fishing during the COVID-19 pandemic between 2020 and 2021. The main points related to the discontent were about income and government financial support to fishers. Synergistic initiatives covering all those involved with the cockle bioresource are essential for the sustainability of this resource of great socio-ecological importance for the Iberian Peninsula. Health efforts and governance are also recommended for the optimal functioning of this fishery during the pandemic period. Coastal floods are currently a strong threat to socioeconomic activities established on the margins of lagoons and estuaries, as well as to their ecological equilibrium, a situation that is expected to become even more worrying in the future in a climate change context. The Ria de Aveiro lagoon, located on the northwest coast of Portugal, is not an exception to these threats, especially considering the low topography of its margins which has led to several flood events in the past. The growing concerns with these regions stem from the mean sea level (MSL) rise induced by climate changes as well as the amplification of the impacts of storm surge events, which are predicted to increase in the future due to higher mean sea levels. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the influence of MSL rise on the inundation of Ria de Aveiro habitats and to assess the changes in inundation patterns resulting from frequent storm surges (2-year return period) from the present to the future, assessing their ecological and socioeconomic impacts. For this, a numerical model (Delft3D), previously calibrated and validated, was used to simulate the lagoon hydrodynamics under different scenarios combining MSL rise and frequent storm surge events. The numerical results demonstrated that MSL rise can change the vertical zonation and threaten the local habitats. Many areas of the lagoon may change from supratidal/intertidal to intertidal/subtidal, with relevant consequences for local species. The increase in MSL expected for the end of the century could make the lagoon more vulnerable to the effect of frequent storm surges, harming mostly agricultural areas, causing great losses for this sector and for many communities who depend on it. Sexual reproduction in seagrasses is essential to increase their resilience towards environmental stressors, but its phenology is still unknown in some regions, limiting our knowledge about the recovery capacity of these ecosystems. In this study, the flowering effort, reproductive phenology, seed production and ability of germination of Zostera noltei was studied for the first time in the Ria de Aveiro lagoon, Portugal. Flowering of Z. noltei in the Ria de Aveiro lasts from June to November, reaching a peak between July and August. All the meadows showed similar flowering effort and phenology over time. Comparing with other European populations, the flowering effort of Z. noltei in Ria de Aveiro lasted for a longer period, which could be related with the milder temperatures in summer and autumn and the great anthropogenic stress to which the meadows are subjected in the lagoon. The number of seeds produced and their ability of germination were similar among meadows and sampling periods, reaching levels similar to those of other European regions. Nevertheless, future studies are needed to determine the fate of the produced seeds in the field to have a better understanding about the natural recovery capacity of the species. The Santo André lagoon is located on the southern west coast of Portugal, about 80 km south of Lisbon. Although the beach barrier separating the lagoon from the open sea was occasionally breached in the past and has artificially been opened on an annual basis for the last decades, the lagoon still represents an appropriate geo-bio-archive for reconstructing the Holocene palaeoenvironmental evolution. For this purpose, a 10-m-long sediment core was taken from the centre of the lagoon by using a floating platform. Sedimentological, geochemical and micropalaeontological analyses were performed in order to unravel past sedimentological, environmental and climatic conditions. Due to the lagoon's exposure to storms from the Atlantic and possible tsunamis triggered by earthquakes along the Eurasian-African plate boundary south of Portugal, it is of high interest to identify short-term high energy events that might have crossed or breached the shielding barrier, leaving their footprint in the sedimentary record of the lagoon. The sediment core archived the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the Santo André lagoon for at least the last eight millennia. The sandy deposits of the core's lowermost part most likely represent a former coastal flood plain that developed when the postglacial marine transgression had reached the area. The continued sea-level rise deposited alternating layers which indicate varying environmental conditions, characterized by peat growth, stagnant-water areas, as well as disconnections from and reconnections with the open sea. Since approximately 5000 BP, the longshore transport had formed a beach barrier, separating the marine embayment from the open sea and creating a lagoon. In addition, four sudden significant marine inundations between ~8500 and 6000 BP are indicated by the sedimentary and microfaunal analyses. Two of these layers can be correlated to extreme wave events (unit B-II), while for the other two layers an ingression caused by sea-level rise or extreme wave events remains debatable. • Zostera marina resurges in the Ria de Aveiro lagoon forming larger patches than before its disappearance a decade ago. • The patches found had similar biometry and were able to flowering in late spring. • The results of this study suggest that Zostera marina is recolonizing the Ria de Aveiro lagoon. Seagrasses provide important services to coastal ecosystems and mankind. Even though seagrasses have been seriously threatened in Europe from the 1970s, a recent study suggests that they are expanding in extension since the past few decades. Here, we add a new case to this reverse trend of seagrass decline, showing the resurgence of several patches of Zostera marina in the Ria de Aveiro lagoon. In the past, this seagrass disappeared on numerous occasions, especially due to dredging activities and its use for agricultural purposes. The last record of the species in the area was a decade ago, when small patches became extinct after a long period of heavy storms. Now, a decade later, nine patches of Z. marina were identified in the Mira channel, inhabiting a much wider area than that occupied prior to its extinction. Although in periods of low tide some patches were submerged in pools and others were exposed to the air, this fact did not cause differences in the eelgrass biometrics and flowering effort. All the patches formed several sexual spathes, suggesting that the eelgrass could form seed banks in the sediment. However, due to this species vulnerability to environmental changes and human activities, further studies are required to determine long-term reproductive success and survival in the Ria de Aveiro. An innovative multiple regression analysis was used to evaluate metal/metalloid contamination in the surface sediments of a coastal lagoon. The concentrations of metals/metalloids were represented as a function of geochemical characteristics of the sediments (fine fraction, concentrations of organic carbon, Ca, Al, Mn) and distances between sampling points. The effect of distances on the concentrations were negligible for Li, Co, Ni, Ba, V, Cr, and only geochemical variables specific for each element explained its spatial variation. The concentrations of As, Cu, Zn and Pb were influenced by both geochemical and geographical distance variables, the latter representing the anthropogenic influence and the extent of transport of contaminants away from the upstream source. Enrichment of the sediment with Ba, As, Co, Cr and V was determined mainly by enrichment with Mn. The proposed approach is supplementary to the traditional utilization of enrichment factors, and is better suited for systems with anthropogenic influence. The need to bring ecosystem services into strategic decisions and policy design for the governance of social-ecological systems is found to be mutually advantageous within the scientific and political community, as it may lead to better environmental decision-making and promote sustainable development. However, its actual integration into spatial planning and decision-making processes have not been fully realised and face substantial challenges, particularly regarding the marine environment. This paper uses the Ria de Aveiro coastal lagoon (Vouga estuary, Portugal) and the conceptual framework of Estuary Programmes as a starting point for proposing a model for the gradual incorporation of ecosystem services into policy and decision-making processes. Estuaries are complex social-ecological systems that lay at the interface between marine and terrestrial ecosystems, which are managed through Estuary Programmes – a special programme of strategic nature that aim to protect the natural resources of estuary and estuary banks. Despite having a legal framework since 2009, Estuary Programmes have never been developed, posing an opportunity for improving traditional practices and adapting them according to new methodologies and approaches. The proposed model, with three essential stages, provides a way forward for strengthening the process of environmental planning and management towards sustainability, territorial and social cohesion, responding to current societal challenges and contributing to human well-being. Principles such as comprehensive, adaptive, inclusive, and integrative were established as key for guiding ecosystem services integration into the spatial planning process.
