Due to the underdeveloped nature of organized labor, it is possible to view the 'individual' and 'collective' components of labor legislation in China as separate and severable. This article aims to challenge such thinking by arguing that collective labor law and collective bargaining practices in China have profoundly shaped the law of employment contracts and individual employment relations. To this end, analyzing the laws surrounding individual employment contracts should not proceed without considering collective labor law. This article investigates, in the first three decades following the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the significance of collective rights to the underdevelopment of legal rules of employment rights and the emergence of the socialist social contract. This article also examines, after the economic reform of 1978, the various ways collective bargaining contributed to the transformation from the socialist social contract to the standard contract of employment and from an underdeveloped to a comprehensive framework of employment legislation. Finally, in the post-economic-reform decades, the analysis suggests that collective bargaining encourages the empowerment of trade unions with legislative and administrative efforts and facilitates the incorporation of terms and conditions improvement into individual employment contracts. Simple Summary: Pholcus is the most diverse spider genus in Pholcidae, and is widely distributed in the Palaearctic, Indo-Malayan, Afrotropical, and Australasian Regions. Previously, the Pholcus spiders have not been recorded from the Lüliang Mountains of North China. We undertook an expedition there for the first time. Phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequence data from four gene fragments (COI, H3, wnt, 28S) suggested that Pholcus from the Lüliang Mountains were grouped into nine well-supported clades. We adopted an integrative approach, including morphology and four methods of molecular species delimitation (ABGD, GMYC, bPTP, and BPP), to investigate species boundaries. Such analyses identified the nine clades as nine separate species, of which eight are new to science. All of them belong to the P. phungiformes species group. Spiders of the genus Pholcus were collected for the first time during an expedition to the Lüliang Mountains in Shanxi Province, North China. These integrative taxonomic analyses identified the nine clades as nine distinct species, comprising Pholcus luya Peng & Zhang, 2013 and eight other species new to science: Pholcus jiaocheng sp. nov., Pholcus linfen sp. nov., Pholcus lishi sp. nov., Pholcus luliang sp. nov., Pholcus wenshui sp. nov., Pholcus xiangfen sp. nov., Pholcus xuanzhong sp. nov., and Pholcus zhongyang sp. nov. The species occur in geographic proximity and show many morphological similarities. All of them belong to the P. phungiformes species group. • rFSAV is a novel recombinant five-antigen Staphylococcus aureus vaccine. • rFSAV was assessed in patients undergoing elective surgery for closed fractures for the first time. • rFSAV is safe, well tolerated in patients undergoing elective surgery for closed fractures. • rFSAV elicits rapid and robust specific humoral immune responses in targeted population. • rFSAV is worth further evaluation in in phase 3 studies in a larger number of individuals. Vaccines are urgently required to control Staphylococcus aureus hospital and community infections and reduce the use of antibiotics. Here, we report the safety and immunogenicity of a recombinant five-antigen Staphylococcus aureus vaccine (rFSAV) in patients undergoing elective surgery for closed fractures. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter phase 2 clinical trial was carried out in 10 clinical research centers in China. Patients undergoing elective surgery for closed fractures, aged 18–70 years, were randomly allocated at a ratio of 1:1 to receive the rFSAV or placebo at a regimen of two doses on day 0 and another dose on day 7. All participants and investigators remained blinded during the study period. The safety endpoint was the incidence of adverse events within 180 days. The immunogenicity endpoints included the level of specific antibodies to five antigens after vaccination, as well as opsonophagocytic antibodies. A total of 348 eligible participants were randomized to the rFSAV (n = 174) and placebo (n = 174) groups. No grade 3 local adverse events occurred. There was no significant difference in the incidence of overall systemic adverse events between the experimental (40.24 %) and control groups (33.72 %) within 180 days after the first immunization. The antigen-specific binding antibodies started to increase at days 7 and reached their peaks at 10–14 days after the first immunization. The rapid and potent opsonophagocytic antibodies were also substantially above the background levels. rFSAV is safe and well-tolerated in patients undergoing elective surgery for closed fractures. It elicited rapid and robust specific humoral immune responses using the perioperative immunization procedure. These results provide evidence for further clinical trials to confirm the vaccine efficacy. The mature landfill leachate containing high ammonia concentration (>1000 mg/L) is a serious threat to environment; however, the low COD to TN ratio (C/N, <3) strongly inhibits the denitrification process and poses a severe obstacle for efficient treatment. Herein, two kinds of acidogenic liquids, fermented from oil-removed food waste and oil-added food waste, were first applied as external carbon sources for the biological nitrogen removal from mature landfill leachate in an aerobic/anoxic membrane bioreactor. “Acidogenic liquid b” served quite better than commercial sodium acetate, considering the higher denitrification efficiency and the slightly rapider denitrification rate. The effect of C/N and temperature were investigated under hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 7 d, which showed that C/N ≥ 7 (25 °C) was enough to meet the general discharge standards of NH 4 + -N, TN and COD in China. Even for some special areas of China, the more stringent discharge standards (NH 4 + -N ≤ 8 mg/L, TN ≤ 20 mg/L) could also be achieved under longer HRT of 14 d and C/N ≥ 6. Notably, the COD concentration in effluent could also be well reduced to 50–55 mg/L, without further physical-chemical treatment. Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is one of the primary types of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the occurrence of which has been increasing worldwide. Although IBD is an intensively studied human microbiome-associated disease, research on Chinese populations remains relatively limited, particularly on the mucosal microbiome. The present study aimed to analyze the changes in the mucosal microbiome associated with UC from the perspectives of medical ecology and complex network analysis., Results: In total, 56 mucosal microbiome samples were collected from 28 Chinese UC patients and their healthy family partners, followed by amplicon sequencing. Based on sequencing data, we analyzed species diversity, shared species, and inter-species interactions at the whole community, main phyla, and core/periphery species levels. We identified four opportunistic "pathogens" (i.e., Clostridium tertium, Odoribacter splanchnicus, Ruminococcus gnavus, and Flavonifractor plautii) with potential significance for the diagnosis and treatment of UC, which were inhibited in healthy individuals, but unrestricted in the UC patients. In addition, we also discovered in this study: (i) The positive-to-negative links (P/N) ratio, which measures the balance of species interactions or inhibition effects in microbiome networks, was significantly higher in UC patients, indicating loss of inhibition against potentially opportunistic "pathogens" associated with dysbiosis. (ii) Previous studies have reported conflicting evidence regarding species diversity and composition between UC patients and healthy controls. Here, significant differences were found at the major phylum and core/periphery scales, but not at the whole community level. Thus, we argue that the paradoxical results found in existing studies are due to the scale effect., Conclusions: Our results reveal changes in the ecology and network structure of the gut mucosal microbiome that might be associated with UC, and these changes might provide potential therapeutic mechanisms of UC. The four opportunistic pathogens that were identified in the present study deserve further investigation in future studies.

Vanadium (V)-contaminated soil poses health risks to plants, animals, and humans via both direct exposure and through the food chain. Stabilization treatment of metal-contaminated soil can chemically convert metal contaminants into less soluble, mobile, and toxic forms. However, the stabilization mechanisms of V-contaminated soil have not been thoroughly investigated. Therefore, we performed geochemical modeling of V-contaminated soil stabilized with the common binders calcium oxide (CaO) and ferrous sulfate (FeSO 4 ), as well as their mixture, using Visual MINTEQ software. The results were validated and exhibited good agreement with experimental results. For CaO, the formation of Ca 2 V 2 O 7 (s) and Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 ·4H 2 O(s) under mild and strong alkaline conditions (pH = 8.0-11.5 and 11.5-12.5), respectively, were predicted as the main immobilization routes. For FeSO 4 , there appeared to be three reaction routes, corresponding to approaches A, B, and C, during the stabilization process. In the simulation, approach C (adsorption of V(V) onto ferrihydrite) was undervalued, whereas approaches A (formation of Fe(VO 3 ) 2 (s)) and B (reduction of V(V) into V(IV) to form V 2 O 4 (s) or adsorb onto soil organic matter) were overvalued. Among the three approaches, approach C had a dominant role and exhibited good agreement with the experimental results. Additionally, soil pH and the saturation index of precipitation had major roles in the stabilization process. In soil, vanadium (V) contamination is commonly concomitant with chromium (Cr) contamination, which poses potential risks to humans, animals, and plants due to the transfer of toxic metals and the increase in their concentrations via the food chain or through direct exposure. This study applied a multi-step column leaching process using low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) to treat V-contaminated soil from a smelter site that contains 2015.1 mg V kg -1 and 1060.3 mg Cr kg -1 . After leaching three times with an equivalent solution/soil ratio of 0.3 mL/g using 1.0 M oxalic acid solution, the total removal rates reached 77.2% and 7.2% for V and Cr, respectively, while the removal rates of the extractable fractions reached 118.6% and 99.2% due to the reduction in residual fraction (F 4 ) of toxic metals. Simultaneously, the distribution and redistribution of geochemical fractions of V and Cr were determined with a sequential extraction technique, and the greater proportion of potential mobile fractions of V (65.1%) may increase its leaching from soil relative to Cr (7.1%). In addition, a lower pH of the leaching agent increased the efficiency of the leaching process to an extent. Compared with batch extraction with a typical solution to soil ratio of 10 mL/g, multi-step column leaching used less agent and hence produced less wastewater. This strategy could reduce the mobilization and bioavailability of toxic metals, and potentially enhance in situ soil flushing for the remediation of V- and Cr- contaminated soil.
