Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of myositis-specific autoantibodies (MSAs) in a cohort of Chinese patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) and to examine their associations with clinical characteristics and long-term prognosis. Methods: Adult patients with confirmed IIMs (n = 515) were studied using the EUROLINE Autoimmune Inflammatory Myopathies 16 Ag (IgG) commercial line blot test to detect MSAs/myositis-associated autoantibodies. We collected the laboratory data and clinical features. The frequencies of MSAs and their associations with clinical phenotypes were evaluated using SPSS 25.0 software. Results: At least one MSA was found in 88.2% of the 515 IIM patients studied. The most frequently detected MSAs were anti-MDA5 (25.4%), anti-Jo-1(15.1%), and anti-EJ (9.5%). Autoantibodies against MDA5, TIF1-γ, and NXP2 were significantly correlated with cutaneous involvement (P < 0.001 or P < 0.01). Anti-TIF1-γ-positive patients had an enhanced risk of malignancy (OR = 3.51). Rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease (RP-ILD) was significantly correlated with anti-MDA5 (P < 0.0001). Anti-MDA5-positive patients had increased risks of elevated ferritin and decreased lymphocyte counts (OR = 5.65 and OR = 5.74, respectively). Kaplan–Meier survival revealed that individuals positive for anti-MDA5, especially anti-MDA5 combined with anti-Ro52, had the worst prognosis (P = 0.03). Male, old age, RP-ILD, and elevated ferritin were identified as predictors of poor prognosis in IIM patients. Conclusions: MSAs were present in the majority of the IIM patients. Numerous MSAs were independent factors for identifying exceptional clinical phenotypes. Key Points • This is a large Chinese cohort of IIM patients to analyze possible associations of MSA profiles with clinical characteristics, aiming to provide valuable data for clinical work. • MSAs were present in approximately 90% of IIM patients with distinct clinical subsets. Patients with anti-Jo-1 and non-anti-Jo-1 ASAs exhibited similar characteristics. • The association of anti-TIF1-γ with malignancy was confirmed in adult patients. Heavy metal pollution has attracted more attention due to the toxicity and migration characteristics, which has close relationship with soil environment and food safety. Typical heavy metal pollutants, copper, lead, zinc, cadmium, chromium, nickel, arsenic and mercury, have been investigated in Jinan Steel Plant located in Jinan, Shandong Province, People's Republic of China. The indexes of Nemerow, geo-accumulation, and potential ecological risk were applied to evaluate the soil pollution. Spatial distribution and vertical migration characteristics were also detected and analyzed. The pollution is mainly concentrated in (1) coke processing plant, (2) blast furnace and (3) stock area. According to the concentration index, Zn and Cr were selected as main pollutants; however, Hg and Pb play directly and indirectly roles in soil pollution based on evaluation system. The analysis in vertical direction indicated that heavy metals showed a certain migration and transformation ability. Moreover, heavy metals predominately existed in the residual fraction on the surface and the middle profile. The bioavailable fraction of Pb and Hg accounts relatively higher proportion, which could threaten human health along the food chain. In the process of heavy metal pollution evaluation and analysis, we should not only pay attention to high concentrations of heavy metals, but also focus on heavy metals with high toxicity and strong migration-transformation capability, which need real-time monitoring and assessment. Tomato Fusarium crown and root rot (FCRR) is an extremely destructive soil-borne disease. To date, studies have shown that only plants with tomato mosaic virus (TMV) resistance exhibit similar resistance to tomato Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici (FORL) and have identified a single relevant gene, Frl, in Peruvian tomato. Due to the relative lack of research on FCRR disease-resistance genes in China and elsewhere, transcriptome data for FORL-resistant (cv. '19912') and FORL-susceptible (cv. 'Moneymaker') tomato cultivars were analysed for the first time in this study. The number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) was higher in Moneymaker than in 19912, and 189 DEGs in the 'plant–pathogen interaction' pathway were subjected to GO and KEGG enrichment analyses. MAPK and WRKY genes were enriched in major metabolic pathways related to plant disease resistance; thus, we focused on these two gene families. In the early stage of tomato infection, the content of JA and SA increased, but the change in JA was more obvious. Fourteen genes were selected for confirmation of their differential expression levels by qRT-PCR. This study provides a series of novel disease resistance resources for tomato breeding and genetic resources for screening and cloning FORL resistance genes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is an important swine pathogen and an emerging zoonotic agent worldwide. Serotype 9 is the most prevalent serotype in several European countries but it is relatively rare in China. In this study, through the investigation of the serotypes of 279 S. suis strains isolated from China from 2015 to 2017, it was found that serotype 9 is the second most prevalent serotype (43 out of 279), behind serotype 2 (83 out of 279). Next, the 43 serotype 9 isolates were sequenced and compared with those from the Netherland (28) and the U.K. (eight). For the purpose of comparison, the strain D12 (GCA_000231905), which has completed genome sequences, was also incorporated. Phylogenetic tree analysis showed that the strains from China and the U.K. were heterogeneous. In contrast, all but one from the Netherland belonged to the same clade. The dominant clades of Chinese strains (33) and strains from the Netherland (27) were very similar. Both of them may have originated from the same strain about 70 years ago. Then, the distributions of virulence-associated genes and antibiotic resistance genes among different clades and sources were analyzed. By comparison, strains from the Netherland carried more virulence-associated genes and those from the U.K. had more antibiotic resistance genes. Additionally, some virulence-associated genes (salK and salR) and antibiotic resistance genes (lincomycin and spectinomycin) existed only in several Chinese strains. In conclusion, our data displayed the population characteristics and differences of S. suis serotype 9 between China and Europe, suggesting that they have taken different evolutionary paths. Topics discussed include discovery of some new copper-sulfur and copper-iron-sulfur minerals; role of temperature and salinity in fluid inclusions and mixing of meteoricwater and porphyry fluid to form deposits in low temperature and salinity.

A comprehensive monitoring and risk assessment of arsenic (As) pollution concerning surface water and sediment is performed in the Jie River basin, where gold smelting enterprises are concentrated. The study area is divide into six regions, labeled as A, B, C, D, E, and F, from sewage outlets to downstream. Results shows that with far away from the sewage outlets, the total As concentrations in water and sediment gradually decrease from regions A to F. However, in region F, the concentration of bioavailable As significantly increases in the sediment due to the higher pH, leading to the transformation of As(V) into more mobile As(III). In sediment, Paracladius sp. exhibits strong resistance to As pollution in sediment, which can potentially elevate the risk of disease transmission. In water bodies, diatoms and euglena are the main phytoplankton in the Jie River while toxic cyanobacteria exhibits lower resistance to As pollution. Extreme precipitation usually cause grievous losses&casualties, which varies greatly under different scenarios. This paper took Henan province as an example, it innovatively constructed three different extreme precipitation scenarios and built indicators system of social vulnerability from exposure, sensitivity and resilience based on MOVE framework. Social Vulnerability Indexs(SoVI) were then calculated by mathematical models under three different reoccurrence intervals. The results show that SoVI was low in the west and high in the north. High SoVI areas expanded to the middle and south as recurrence intervals increased. SoVI in each area of Henan province increased along with the recurrence intervals at different growth rates. The larger the recurrence interval was, the faster the SoVI increased. The results indicate SoVI is greatly affected by disaster levels, which need to be incorporated into social vulnerability. Urease inhibitor (UI) and nitrification inhibitor (NI) can reduce N losses from agricultural soils but effects of inhibitors on N cycle are unclear. A field experiment was conducted with maize to test effects of UI (N-(n-Butyl) thiophosphoric, NBPT) and NI (3,4-dimethylepyrazolephosphate, DMPP) on N uptake and N-cycling soil microbes. Five treatments were imposed: no N fertilizer input (CK), conventional fertilization (CF) and 80% of urea input with NBPT (80%U+UI), with DMPP (80%U+NI) and with half NBPT and half DMPP (80%U+1/2(UI+NI)). There were no significant differences in biomass between 80%U+UI, 80%U+NI and CF but harvest index was increased under 80%U+UI and 80%U+NI. Compared to CF, N use efficiency of grain under 80%U+UI was increased by 7.1%, whereas grain yield and N uptake under 80%U+1/2(UI+NI) were decreased by 8.2% and 9.4%, respectively. The peak soil [Formula: see text] content was at about 15 days after fertilization (DAF) under CF but 30 DAF under the inhibitor treatments. In soils of 80%U+UI, the activities of urease and nitrate reductase were decreased between 15-45 DAF and between 5-30 DAF. The abundance of N-cycling soil microbes was affected: 80%U+UI and 80%U+NI reduced the copies of the amoA AOA and nir genes at about 15 days and reduced the copies of the amoA AOB gene at about 30 days. Correlation analysis indicated that there were significant positive relationships between amoA AOB gene and [Formula: see text], as well as between nirK gene and [Formula: see text]. Background: Epidemiological evidence suggests sex difference in serum uric acid (SUA) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) might be a potential explanation for the gender difference in prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, few epidemiology data in China have tested this hypothesis., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study to assess the joint associations between SUA and serum ALT with NAFLD among elderly Chinese men and women., Results: Among 7569 participants with a mean age of 59.8 years (± 13.4 years), 56.6% of women and 43.4% of men were diagnosed as NAFLD, respectively. A positive association between SUA and NAFLD prevalence was observed in both men and women. NAFLD prevalence was 2.74 times (95% CI 2.00-3.76) higher for men and 4.60 times (95% CI 3.39-6.24) higher for women with the highest quintiles of SUA levels compared to those with the lowest levels. SUA levels were significantly associated with prevalence of mild- and severe-steatosis (P < 0.01). In addition, the ORs of NAFLD among participants with high SUA levels and high serum ALT was 10.75 (95% CI 3.56-32.46) for men and 7.96 (95% CI 2.83-22.39) for women, compared with those with low SUA levels and low serum ALT., Conclusions: SUA levels were positively associated with NAFLD prevalence, and the association was slightly stronger in women than in men. A significant joint association of SUA and serum ALT with NAFLD prevalence was observed in all participants, which was slightly stronger in men than in women.

The relationship between vitamin D deficiency and idiopathic central precocious puberty (ICPP) has been recently documented. In this study, 280 girls diagnosed with ICPP and 188 normal puberty control girls of similar ages were enrolled and retrospectively studied. The ICPP group had significantly lower serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels than the control group. Furthermore, a nonlinear relationship was found between serum 25[OH]D and ICPP, and a cut-off point for serum 25[OH]D was found at 31.8 ng/ml for ICPP with and without adjusting the different confounding factors. Girls with serum 25[OH]D ≥ 31.8 ng/ml had a lower odds ratio (unadjusted: OR 0.36, 95% CI 0.15 to 0.83, P < 0.05; height and weight adjusted: OR 0.44, 95% CI 0.18 to 1.08, P = 0.072; BMI adjusted: OR 0.36, 95% CI 0.16 to 0.84, P < 0.05). The ICPP subjects with 25[OH]D deficiency had a higher body mass index (BMI) than the subjects from the two other subgroups. Correlation analysis showed that vitamin D level is correlated with BMI and some metabolic parameters in the ICPP group. Our study suggested that vitamin D status may be associated with ICPP risk and may have a threshold effect on ICPP.
