Palms (Arecaceae) exert great relevance to the structure and functioning of tropical forest ecosystems, in addition to comprise key resources for frugivorous animals. However, many species are currently at risk of extinction due to overexploitation and/or habitat loss. Our study aimed to perform a systematic review with a scientometric approach of all 78 native palm species of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, seeking to identify the best‐studied species and regions, main studied topics, overall patterns, trends and gaps in scientific research associated with this botany family. In total, studies were carried out for 48 species belonging to 10 genera, with the number of studies exponentially increasing from the 70s and exhibiting great difference in the number of publications among species. Euterpe edulis was the most studied species (n = 274), followed by Acrocomia aculeata (n = 205), whereas Bactris bahiensis (1), Geonoma litoralis (1), Syagrus santosii (1) and Trithrinax acanthocoma (0) comprised the less studied species. The largest number of studies was carried out in the south‐eastern states of Brazil. Regarding the type of studies, 34% and 27% were related to biochemical properties and ecological processes, respectively, while studies on entomology (n = 26), tissue culture (n = 23) and taxonomy (n = 7) showed the lowest number of studies. Given the key role of palms in tropical forests, our study suggests that future research should focus on less studied species, including Desmoncus spp., Geonoma spp. and Trithrinax sp., and on some less studied areas like the north‐east portion of the Atlantic Forest. Freshwater macroinvertebrates can connect tropical forests and stream food webs by consuming both terrestrially and aquatically produced foods, but direct observations of nocturnal feeding behavior in these natural ecosystems are rare. Observational data on decapods feeding behavior are limited partly because they are cryptic and often forage at night to avoid predators and competitors. We hypothesized that freshwater decapods forage on riparian fruit fall based on its relatively high energy and nutrient content. We used underwater cameras to video record night-time foraging under dim red light. Palm fruits (Acrocomia aculeata (Jacq.) Lodd. ex Mart.) were added to determine rates of feeding responses among crabs (Silviocarcinus australis Magalhães and Turkay, 1996) and shrimp (Macrobrachium amazonicum Heller, 1862) in a spring-fed, clear-water stream in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Within 30 min, shrimp located the fruit, and within 60 min, crabs began shredding the pulp of the palm fruit. Crabs fed on the palm fruits, on average five times longer than shrimp and produced pieces of palm fruit pulp that some shrimp consumed without aggressively interacting with the crab. Small fish also consumed some palm pulp particles. This interaction network is an example of fruit-fall processing based on indirect facilitation among different types of consumers. Palm swamp forests are wetland ecosystems typical of the Brazilian Cerrado, which in recent decades have undergone intense changes due to land use alterations and climate change. As a result of these disturbances, many palm swamps have been experiencing significant drying, which can also affect adjacent vegetation. In the present study, we evaluated whether the drying of palm swamps affects the structure of plant–herbivore networks located in adjacent savanna areas in Brazil. Our results show that savanna areas adjacent to dry zones of palm swamps have fewer interactions, fewer interacting species, and a less specialized topology, which corroborates our expectations. Our findings indicate that the drying of palm swamps also has propagated impacts on adjacent savanna vegetation, impairing more specialized interactions in these environments. On the other hand, contrary to expectations, plant–herbivore networks in dry zones displayed higher modularity, lower nestedness and lower robustness than those in wet zones, suggesting that in dry environments, species tend to compartmentalize their interactions, even with lower interaction specialization. This is the first study to investigate the impacts of environmental drying on the structure of plant–herbivore networks in tropical ecosystems, highlighting the complexity of these effects and their differential impact on specialized and generalized interactions. Simple Summary: Microbial pest control offers promising opportunities to develop sustainable alternatives to synthetic chemical insecticides. In Brazil, the selection of native strains of entomopathogenic fungi suggests an option for South American palm weevil (Rhynchophorus palmarum, SAPW) management and potential tools for red palm weevil (R. ferrugineus, RPW) management. Both weevils in America are susceptible to the native isolates of Beauveria bassiana, CVAD01, CVAD02, CVAD06, and CPATC/032, which originate from palm orchard soils and infected SAPW adults in northwestern Brazil's Alagoas state. The SAPW mortality rates in our study were 90 and 100% on day 21, suggesting the efficacy of these strains that are well-adapted to the environment and to the pest. We suggest both the development of formulates for microbiological insecticides against R. palmarum and future tests on R. ferrugineus. Both palm weevils, the South American (Rhynchophorus palmarum) (SAPW) and the red palm weevil (R. ferrugineus, RPW), are present in South America, affecting commercial, ornamental, and native palms. These pests oviposit and thrive on selected Arecaceae. R. palmarum mainly infests coconut (Cocos nucifera), oil palms (Elaeis guineensis), and other ornamental and native palms in America, causing a significant social impact on growers. The weevils fulfill a significant ectosymbiotic macro- and microorganism role in the first period of larval development, worsening the damage which, during this period, is not yet apparent. Palm protection in the Brazilian context suggests the use of indigenous agents for microbiological biocontrol. This research identifies three Brazilian Beauveria bassiana isolates: CVAD01, CVAD02, and CVAD06. The results suggest that the strain's impact on R. palmarum can also be compared with that of the commercial strain Beauveria bassiana. Phylogenetic analysis allowed the delimitation of species of Beauveria (Hypocreales). Pathogenicity tests caused significant mortality in R. palmarum. The isolates CVAD01, CVAD02, and CVADO6 showed high pathogenicity between 7 and 21 days, with mortality rates between 90 and 100%, suggesting that they may be effective biological control agents of R. palmarum in the field when used, within available means, to mitigate the impact of R. palmarum and R. ferrugineus in South America. In this study, we examined the distribution and conservation status of understory palms in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina using data collected by the Floristic and Forest Inventory of Santa Catarina (IFFSC). Understory palms were systematically sampled within sampling units (SU) distributed over a state-wide 10 × 10 km grid. Among the 206 total SU monitored by IFFSC within Pluvial and Coastal Forest, 86% (n=177 SU) contained understory palms, comprising 1738 individuals from the following species: Bactris setosa, Geonoma elegans, G. gamiova, and G. schottiana. To explore the conservation status of understory palm populations in Santa Catarina, we overlaid a map of federal priority conservation areas on top of IFFSC distribution data for understory palms. Conservation priority levels defined by the Brazilian Environmental Agency (MMA) are rated Extremely High, Very High, High and Insufficiently Known. Ninety-four percent of the SU containing understory palms overlapped priority conservation areas, highlighting the centrality of understory palms in biodiversity conservation. Despite the wide distribution of understory palm communities in Santa Catarina, intense scrutiny of forest remnants is necessary in view of sensitivity to environmental disturbance, so as to guarantee the maintenance of understory palm populations and their ecosystem services. All Neotropical primates are arboreal and thus depend on forests for their survival. Arboreality puts many Neotropical primates at risk of extinction due to the high rates of deforestation in the tropics. We assessed the influence of vegetation structure and forest patch attributes on the occurrence of the threatened red‐handed howler monkey (Alouatta belzebul) in an Amazonian savanna. Using a sample of 38 forest patches in a region of approximately 2000 km2 in the state of Amapá, northern Brazil, we used logistic regression to find the best predictors of the occurrence of A. belzebul. We assessed patch area, patch isolation, the proportion of seasonally flooded forest in the patch, the density of flooded area palms, forest height, canopy cover, and diameter at breast height of trees. Patch area and palm density were the best predictors of the occurrence of A. belzebul in forest patches, both having a positive effect on the probability of occurrence. Our results indicate that areas of flooded forest in forest patches may be keystone habitats for A. belzebul living in Amazonian savannas. The observed effect of palm density on A. belzebul suggests that this variable is useful for planning conservation actions, including the selection of areas for protection and management strategies for areas inhabited by this primate. A novel baculovirus observed to infect Automeris liberia (Cramer) (bullseye moth) is here described. Caterpillars of A. liberia with symptoms of viral infection were collected from African oil palm plantations in Tailândia, PA, Brazil. Macerated caterpillars were then offered to caterpillars of Automeris cinctistriga (Felder & Rogenhoper), leading to viral symptoms and death before pupation. A transmission electron microscope was used for virus ultrastructural identification. The presence of viral occlusion bodies (OBs) containing multiple nucleocapsids was observed and such features are compatible with Alphabaculovirus (Baculoviridae). Molecular detection by PCR with primers for polyhedrin gene (polh) and for late expression factor-8 gene (lef-8), confirmed that this isolate belonged to Alphabaculovirus genus. To our knowledge, this is the first record of a baculovirus isolated from or associated to Automeris. Twelve new lichen species are described in the family Arthoniaceae. All are sterile white crusts growing on overhanging trees (and one on living palm fronds) in ten different states in tropical Brazil. In the tropics, sterile crusts so far have been mostly disregarded. They are all characterized by their chemistry and morphology, often including pseudoisidia or soredia, but their phylogenetic relationships have been investigated with sequencing. The following species are described: Arthonia farinosorediata , with shallow soralia and without secondary metabolites; Crypthonia irregularis , with irregular isidia, confluentic acid and sometimes 2ʹ- O -methylperlatolic acid; Crypthonia pseudisidiata , with soft pseudoisidia and without secondary metabolites; Crypthonia stromatica , with sterile stromata and confluentic acid; Cryptophaea constrictopseudisidiata with pseudoisidia, lichexanthone and confluentic acid; Cryptophaea lichexanthopseudisidiata with pseudoisidia and lichexanthone; Cryptophaea lichexanthosorediata with soredia, lichexanthone and divaricatic acid; Cryptothecia lecanorosorediata with soredia and lecanoric acid; Glomerulophoron confluentisorediatum with soredia, confluentic and 2ʹ- O -methylperlatolic acids; Herpothallon psorpseudisidiatum on living palm fronds with a strongly attached thallus, long pseudoisidia and psoromic acid; Myriostigma minisorediatum with soredia and 2ʹ- O -methylperlatolic acid; Pachnolepia longipseudisidiata with long pseudoisidia, and a thallus containing lichexanthone, confluentic acid and 2ʹ- O -methylperlatolic acid. Ampithoe is one of the most diverse genera of Ampithoidae, commonly found in shallow waters associated with algae. This genus is distinguished by the absence of antenna 1 accessory flagellum, pereopods 5–7 not prehensile and uropod 1 spur absent. From Brazil, only four species are hitherto known, which are A. thaix, A. robustimana, A. ramondi and A. marcuzzii. In the present study, we describe a new species of Ampithoe from Todos-os-Santos Bay, Northeastern Brazil, found associated with the sponge Clathria. The new species is unique by showing mandibular palp thin and reduced, male gnathopod 1 propodus palm very short and setose, male gnathopod 2 propodus palm acute, with a tooth near hinge of dactylus. Most lands in the Brazilian semi-arid region are covered with native vegetation (Caatinga) with limited agricultural practices due to chronic water-scarcity issues. However, clearing the native vegetation and using the land for agriculture is becoming a common practice. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of forage palm and stone barrier in reducing runoff and erosion compared to native vegetation. The study was conducted in the Jatobá experimental basin, Brazil, using runoff plots with three surface covers: Caatinga, forage palm barrier, and stone barrier. Data collection includes runoff and erosion rates, and soil moisture dynamics at two depths (0–20 and 20–40 cm) in response to rainfall events. Rainfall characteristics were also recorded and analyzed for 30 min for intensity (I30) and erosivity (EI30). Results showed that stone barrier and forage palm treatments were not as effective as the native vegetation Caatinga in reducing soil loss. Stone barrier was the least effective in reducing runoff and soil loss. However, runoff from forage palm was not statistically different from Caatinga. In addition, forage palm improves soil moisture dynamics at two depths. The study findings highlighted the importance of the Caatinga for soil, water and biome conservation in the region. However, the study also suggested that in the places where agricultural practices are conducted, using forage palm as a soil-conservation strategy could be a good alternative. Additional benefits of forage palm include its suitability for intercropping with other crops, and that it can serve as an alternative for animal feed in the region. The Brazilian palm fruits and hearts-of-palm of Euterpe edulis, E. oleracea and E. precatoria are an important source for agro-industrial production, due to overexploitation, conservation strategies are required to maintain genetic diversity. Chloroplast genomes have conserved sequences, which are useful to explore evolutionary questions. Besides the plastid DNA, genome skimming allows the identification of other genomic resources, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), providing information about the genetic diversity of species. We sequenced the chloroplast genome and identified gene content in the three Euterpe species. We performed comparative analyses, described the polymorphisms among the chloroplast genome sequences (repeats, indels and SNPs) and performed a phylogenomic inference based on 55 palm species chloroplast genomes. Finally, using the remaining data from genome skimming, the nuclear and mitochondrial reads, we identified SNPs and estimated the genetic diversity among these Euterpe species. The Euterpe chloroplast genomes varied from 159,232 to 159,275 bp and presented a conserved quadripartite structure with high synteny with other palms. In a pairwise comparison, we found a greater number of insertions/deletions (indels = 93 and 103) and SNPs (284 and 254) between E. edulis/E. oleracea and E. edulis/E. precatoria when compared to E. oleracea/E. precatoria (58 indels and 114 SNPs). Also, the phylogeny indicated a closer relationship between E. oleracea/E. precatoria. The nuclear and mitochondrial genome analyses identified 1,077 SNPs and high divergence among species (FST = 0.77), especially between E. edulis and E. precatoria (FST = 0.86). These results showed that, despite the few structural differences among the chloroplast genomes of these Euterpe palms, a differentiation between E. edulis and the other Euterpe species can be identified by point mutations. This study not only brings new knowledge about the evolution of Euterpe chloroplast genomes, but also these new resources open the way for future phylogenomic inferences and comparative analyses within Arecaceae., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

The palm tribe Phytelepheae form a clade of three genera and eight species whose phylogenetic relationships and historical biogeography are not fully understood. Based on morphological similarities and phylogenetic relatedness, it has been suggested that Phytelephas seemannii and Phytelephas schottii are synonyms of Phytelephas macrocarpa, implying the existence of only six species within the Phytelepheae. In addition, uncertainty in their phylogenetic relationships in turn results in blurred biogeographic history. We inferred the phylogenomic relationships in the Phytelepheae by target-capturing 176 nuclear genes and estimated divergence times by using four fossils for time calibration. We lastly explored the biogeographic history of the tribe by inferring its ancestral range evolution. Our phylogenomic trees showed that P. seemannii and P. schottii are not closely related with P. macrocarpa, and therefore, support the existence of eight species in the Phytelepheae. The ancestor of the tribe was widely-distributed in the Chocó, Magdalena, and Amazonia during the Miocene at 19.25 Ma. Early diversification in Phytelephas at 5.27 Ma could have occurred by trans-Andean vicariance after the western Andes uplifted rapidly at ∼ 10 Ma. Geonoma maxima (Poit.) Kunth is an example of a species complex, among many others restricted to Neotropical rain forests, which contribute to their high species diversity. Using environmental, morphological, karyological, and molecular data, we aim to test the taxonomic circumscription of 3 of the 11 G. maxima subspecies defined in the latest taxonomic treatment. We evaluated 217 samples of G. maxima complex from Ducke Reserve in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Environmental preferences were significant at the 0.1% level. Subspecies maxima occurred in the slope, subsp. chelidonura in the floodplain, and subsp. spixiana in the plateau. Leaf morphology and height were different for each subspecies, but not leaf anatomy. The karyotypes of subspp. chelidonura and maxima were symmetrical with 2n = 28 chromosomes, 16 metacentric and 12 submetacentric. Molecular analysis revealed two groups, one comprised subspp. maxima and chelidonura, and the other formed exclusively by subsp. spixiana. At Ducke Reserve, it is clear that the three subspecies are easily recognizable morphologically and ecologically, and it is likely that they do not interbreed locally. However, if these subspecies are analyzed on a larger geographic scale, it may not be possible to separate them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The genus Cerradoa (type species Cerradoa palmaea) was established in 1978 by Hennen and Ono and named after the Brazilian Cerrado biome. The holotype collected in Planaltina, Federal District, Brazil, belonged to the first rust fungus reported on palms (Arecaceae). For decades, the status of Cerradoa as a distinct genus has been regarded as doubtful, representing a synonym of Edythea (Uropyxidaceae) starting with the second edition of the Illustrated Genera of Rust Fungi in 1983. Our molecular phylogenetic analyses, as well as our morphological investigations, allowed us to reject this synonymy, leading to the reinstatement of Cerradoa within the Pucciniaceae. Cerradoa, together with morphologically similar genera such as the newly established Pseudocerradoa with two species (Ps. paullula and Ps. rhaphidophorae) infecting araceous hosts, the fern rust Desmella, and also P. engleriana, could not be assigned to any of the seven identified major lineages within the Pucciniaceae. Edythea, instead of being maintained as a member of the Uropyxidaceae, was herein placed in Pucciniaceae, shown phylogenetically in close relationship to Cumminsiella mirabilissima, both infecting the Berberidaceae. Additionally, our extensive phylogenetic analyses add guidance for future taxonomic revisions in the highly polyphyletic genus Puccinia and other established taxa within the family Pucciniaceae. This study aimed to compare the floristic and tree structure of two dry forests patches located in a forest remnant encompassed in Cerrado biome, south Goiás state, Brazil. In semideciduous (SF) and deciduous (DF) dry forests, we allocated 25 permanent plots (20 × 20 m), including trees and palms individuals with diameter at breast height (DBH1.3m) ≥ 5.0 cm. The whole survey showed 2 614 individuals, 146 species and 46 families. SF showed higher basal area and average height, but DF had higher density. Due to the low equitability and smaller species richness found in DF (87 species) than in SF (113), the Shannon diversity in SF was significantly higher. Both vegetation types showed low qualitative (Jaccard, 36%) and quantitative (Morisita, 19%) similarity, as only three of the 25 species regarded as having the highest importance/value were common in both dry forests. Fabaceae predominated in the number of species and density, especially in DF. Zoochory was more abundant, although it was not different between vegetation types, whereas both anemochory and autochory dispersion mechanisms were higher in DF. Although the surveys are geographically close, differences in the vegetation structure between dry forests showed strong heterogeneity and environmental complexity, reflecting an increase in local diversity, and reinforcing the need for conservation of these forest remnants in Cerrado. Butia spp. is a palm tree native to southern Brazil and Uruguay. The fruits are consumed fresh and used to make many food products, while the leaves are commonly used to make crafts. In January 2018, severe symptoms of wilt and drying were identified in clusters of Butia odorata occurring on the leaf and the rachis (in a proportion of 50% of leaf area). The pathogen was isolated from a stump extracted from a symptomatic tree. The morphologic characters showed a presence of macroconidia and microconidia with a classic salmon color of some species of the Fusarium genus. The molecular identification of the locus of actin (ACT), calmodulin (CAL), factor elongation 1-alpha (TEF1) and histone (HIS3), confirmed the identity of Fusarium anthophilum. This finding will help growers and agronomists prevent and manage this disease. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of Fusarium antophilum causing disease in Butia odorata. Syagrus coronata (Mart.) Becc. belongs to the Arecaceae family. It is a species native to Brazil of ecological, social, and economic importance. To date, there are few mitochondrial genomes in Arecaceae (Cocos nucifera and Phoenix dactylifera L.), and studies of the mitochondrial genome are essential to understand the evolution of the Arecaceae family. This study reports and compares the newly sequenced genome of S. coronata. Single-end and paired-end reads were used to obtain de novo contigs. The mitochondrial contigs were selected using C. nucifera as a reference and were merged using mate paired-end reads. The mitochondrial genome showed 642,817 bp, circular structure, containing 73 predicted functional genes, including four ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 27 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and 42 coding protein genes. Large chloroplast genomic fragments were identified in the mitochondrial genome, and large DNA repetitive fragments were into intergenic space regions. Arecaceae mitochondrial genomes showed partial similarities in size, genome structure, and gene content. However, they exhibited numerous rearrangements. In summary, (1) we sequenced the mitochondrial genome of S. coronata and compared with other mitogenomes of Arecaceae. (2) Genomic rearrangements and gene transfer have been identified from the chloroplast genome to the mitochondrial genome. (3) The mitochondrial genome of Arecareae showed similarities in size, structure, and gene content. Aim: Spatial patterns of biodiversity in the Atlantic Forest are well characterized. However, there is no consensus on the biological processes underlying these patterns, and multiple competing hypotheses have been proposed, several of which centre on climatic stability. Here, we ask if Late Quaternary climatic stability predicts contemporary population structure and genomic‐level diversity in two palm species. Location: Atlantic Forest of Eastern Brazil. Taxa: Syagrus botryophora and S. pseudococos (Arecaceae). Methods: We first model the distribution of suitable environments in 62 time‐slice climate projections over the last 120 thousand years, and summarize stability over that period. We then use >25,000 RADseq‐generated SNPs to (i) describe the spatial patterns of genomic variation in both species, (ii) test how well genomic variation is explained by isolation by distance and by the environmental resistance imposed by historical instability (isolation by resistance) and (iii) test for a correlation between genetic diversity and historical stability. Results: The contemporary range of S. botryophora has been relatively stable over the last 30 thousand years and there are two isolated regions of high stability for S. pseudococos. The genomic data recover a clear pattern of isolation by distance in S. botryophora and two structured populations in S. pseudococos. Consequently, the contribution of isolation by resistance to overall genetic structure is much higher in S. pseudococos. Genetic diversity is not significantly correlated with historical stability in either species. Main Conclusions: Based on the concordance between historical stability and genetic structure, Late Quaternary climate stability may have maintained population connectivity within S. botryophora and promoted intraspecific divergence in S. pseudococos. Conversely, historical stability does not seem to be driving spatial patterns of genetic diversity. Ecosystem engineer species can affect the assembly and maintenance of biological communities by altering local environmental conditions. Several palm tree species play this role in changing the surrounding environment mainly through the fall of entire rachis and the formation of a thick and homogeneous leaf litter layer beneath the canopy. However, their impact on soil animal communities remains unclear. In particular, soil organisms (e.g. ants) can be negatively affected by palm‐driven local changes, since they are especially susceptible to leaf litter changes. Our objective was to test if the presence of palm trees reduces alpha and beta diversities of ant communities at taxonomic and morphometric levels. We also tested if palm tree understory mound (debris pile just below the canopy) area and population density reduce ant community alpha and beta diversities (at the taxonomic and morphometric levels) in tropical rainforests. To do so, we described taxonomic and morphometric diversity patterns of ant communities in a relictual landscape of the Atlantic Rainforest (northeastern Brazil) using Hill's numbers approach in two habitats: understory mounds surrounding the palm tree species Acrocomia intumescens, and forest understory without A. intumescens (non‐palm understory). Our main findings were: (1) Taxonomic and morphometric alpha diversity were similar between A. intumescens understory mound and non‐palm understory; (2) Ant communities in non‐palm understory presented higher beta diversity than communities from A. intumescens understory mounds considering both rare species and morphometric traits; (3) A. intumescens understory mound area negatively affected common and dominant ant species; and (4) the interaction between understory mound area and the population density of A. intumescens affected dominant ant species in complex ways and the outcomes depend on the balance between both predictors. Our findings point to an important role of palm trees as ecosystem engineers in reducing ant biodiversity and changing the functional signature of human‐modified tropical rainforests. Introduction: The natural ecosystems of northern Mato Grosso, Brazil, are in process of fragmentation, mainly due to population growth and the expansion of agriculture. This endangers the palm Euterpe precatoria (locally known as açaí), used for construction, palm hearts, juices and ice cream. Objective: To evaluate the local diversity and genetic structure in native populations of E. precatoria. Methods: We collected leaves from 106 fruiting palms from five populations in Mato Grosso State, for analysis of microsatellite markers with Polymerase Chain Reaction. Results: The five SSR loci revealed a total of 30 alleles, ranging from 5 (EE23 and EE43) to 7 (EE2 and EE15), with an average of 6 alleles per locus. The mean PIC was 0.74 and confirmed low heterozygosity and inbreeding. The UPGMA dendrogram produced two groups and molecular variance revealed greater genetic differentiation within populations. The high levels of homozygous microsatellite loci indicate low genetic diversity. Conclusions: These populations have low gene diversity, high average number of alleles per locus, and rare and exclusive alleles. Oenocarpus distichus presents economic, ecological, and dietary potential for pulp market processed in natura. Germplasm conservation and genetic improvement depend on genetic divergence studies. The objective was to quantify genetic divergence in a native population of O. distichus genotypes based on fruit biometrics. The fruit length and width, fruit mass, pulp and seed, pulp and almond thickness, and pulp yield per fruit were evaluated. All fruit biometric characteristics of O. distichus palms show genetic variability. Genetic variations among genotypes are essential for predicting heredity and heterosis, which are essential for improving O. distichus production. Pulp yield and seed mass were negatively correlated. Almond thickness and pulp, seed mass and transverse diameter were positively correlated. Genetic distances between pair of genotypes ranged from 0.07 to 48.10 with three genetically distinct groups. The seed mass, almond thickness and transverse diameter contributed to genetic divergence. Heritability estimates the genetic control that can be obtained from O. distichus germplasm. Correlations between the variable pair reduce the evaluation effort and the resources to measure the genotype allocations in heterogeneous groups presenting high genetic variability. This makes it possible to select individuals for hybridization programs with F1 generation gains. Correlation and relative contribution networks, based on relationships graphical between fruit biometric characteristics, allow the variables selection with less effort and fewer measurements. O. distichus fruit biometric characters are efficient to quantify genetic divergence between genotypes.

Population models are helpful for understanding demographic trends in invasive plants and crucial in defining effective management actions. Here, we assessed the dynamics of three populations of the invasive palm Roystonea oleracea on an island in the Atlantic Forest, Brazil. We aimed to verify variations in the life cycle parameters (survival, growth, fecundity) of individuals; to evaluate population growth rates (λ); and to understand which vital rates most impact λ. In 2015, we established plots (40 × 40 m) in areas occupied by R. oleraceae and tagged (numbered aluminum tags) and measured the diameter at ground level (DGL) of all palms in the plots. We conducted an annual census in each population in 2016, 2017, and 2018 where all palms were relocated and measured again. We used Integral Projection Models to verify differences in life cycle parameters and to calculate λ, and prospective analyses of elasticity to verify the contribution of each vital rates on λ. Palms with smaller DGL (< 10 mm) had lower rates of survival or remained in stasis, while palms with larger DGL (> 10 mm) had higher survival rates, increased in size, or reproduced. The λ values were different between populations: Population 1 was decreasing, Population 2 was increasing, and Population 3 was stable. Survival and growth of palms with larger diameters were the vital rates that most impacted λ. Management strategies to eliminate palms with DGL > 400 mm are essential to reduce the λ of the species and to control their spread to new locations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Euterpe edulis is a plant native of Brazil and popularly known as juçara. The aim of this study was to develop and validate an analytical method using high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) of juçara crude extracts (JCEs) and to evaluate dairy products containing free and microencapsulated extracts. The validated analytical method for JCE was performed using cyanidin‐3‐O‐rutinoside (C3R – isolated and identified as major component from JCE) as a reference: linearity was obtained using ten concentrations between 25 and 250 μg mL−1 (R2 = 0.994); limits of detection and quantification were 19.04 μg mL−1 and 57.7 μg mL−1 respectively; accuracy (relative standard deviation) was <5%; recovery was 104.85 μg mL−1; and the method is robust. Physicochemical analyses of the dairy products were evaluated using colour, pH, and concentration of anthocyanins using HPLC calculated as C3R over 21 days of storage. The pH remained stable until the end of the test. The colour and the concentration of anthocyanins remained stable for 9 days. The botanical origin and seasonal variation of pollen collected by Tetragonisca weyrauchi were studied by means of palynology (pollen identification). The study was carried out between August 2016 and July 2017 with a hive introduced in a house garden in an urban area (09° 56′ 38.7″ S; 67° 52′ 42.9″ W) near the campus of the Federal University of Acre (UFAC). In total, we identified 87 pollen types from 31 botanical families, with the most representative ones being: Alismataceae, Amaranthaceae, Arecaceae, Boraginaceae, Cyperaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae and Urticaceae, all displaying percentages above 10%. The pollen types Alternanthera (Amaranthaceae), Cecropia (Urticaceae) and Cordia sellowiana (Boraginaceae) obtained relative abundances above 90% and are therefore considered events of temporary specialization. The lowest diversity and evenness values were found for July (H′ = 0.127; J′ = 0.071) and August (H′ = 0.070; J′ = 0.043), and the highest values for October (H′ = 2.025; J′ = 0.715) and April (H′ = 1.941; J′ = 0.611), thus not suggesting relationships with the rainy (November–April) or dry (May–October) periods. Furthermore, there was no preference by the bees for morphological characteristics of the pollen such as size, exine texture or aperture number. However, the most representative grains are among the small and medium size, reinforcing the hypothesis that this bee species prefers small flowers available in dense inflorescences. Arecaceae palm tree fruits (APTFs) with pulp or kernel rich in oil are widely distributed in six Brazilian biomes. APTFs represent a great potential for the sustainable exploitation of products with high added value, but few literature studies have reported their properties and industrial applications. The lack of information leads to underutilization, low consumption, commercialization, and processing of these fruit species. This review presents and discusses the occurrence of 13 APTFs and the composition, physicochemical properties, bioactive compounds, and potential applications of their 25 oils and fats. The reported studies showed that the species present different lipid profiles. Multivariate analysis based on principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) indicated a correlation between the composition of pulp and kernel oils. Myristic, caprylic, capric, and lauric acids are the main saturated fatty acids, while oleic acid is the main unsaturated. Carotenoids and phenolic compounds are the main bioactive compounds in APTFs, contributing to their high oxidative stability. The APTFs oils have a potential for use as foods and ingredients in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and biofuel industries. The red palm mite, Raoiella indica Hirst (Tenuipalpidae), has mainly been registered on palm species (Arecaceae), and its expansion in Brazil has the potential to cause significant negative impact on cultivated as well as native palms. Here, we evaluate the potential of native palms from Northeast Brazil to act as hosts of R. indica. Specifically, we used in situ free-choice and confinement tests, in which sections of palm leaves/leaflets of various species were experimentally infested with R. indica. We tested the following species: Acrocomia aculeata, Acrocomia intumescens, Allagoptera caudescens, Attalea funifera, Attalea oleifera, Bactris acanthocarpa var. acanthocarpa, Bactris ferruginea, Bactris glassmanii, Bactris hirta var. spruceana, Bactris pickelii, Copernicia prunifera, Desmoncus orthacanthos, Desmoncus polyacanthos, Syagrus coronata and Syagrus schizophylla. All of these were compared with the mite's preferred host, the coconut palm, Cocos nucifera. In the free-choice test, both male and female R. indica preferred C. nucifera in comparison to each of the native palms. In the confinement test, we observed significant differences in the survivorship between mites on native palms and those on coconut palms after the second day of infestation. By the fifth day, survivorship of mites on the native palms was almost always significantly lower than on C. nucifera (excepting for C. prunifera). We conclude that, among all the native palms evaluated, only the carnauba palm (C. prunifera) is at risk from R. indica. Tarsonemids are mites that can damage coconut fruits, leading to losses in crop yield and quality. In this study, a survey of tarsonemid species and associated predatory mites underneath the perianth of coconut was carried out on palms cultivated along the coast of northeastern Brazil, and their spatial distribution was studied in one of the cultivations, on fruits of different ages, to subsidize monitoring and management of pest species. Samples of fruits of different ages were collected from cultivation sites of 9 states, with sites ranging from a few km to a maximum of 100 km apart from one another. Three coconut palms were selected from each site, collecting 10 fruits with necrotic lesions similar to those caused by Steneotarsonemus species from each palm. The mites were collected, mounted and identified. For the analysis, a re-evaluation was done of the tarsonemids collected in similar surveys for mites in general on coconut fruits, as reported previously in the literature. Subsequently, a field in Igarassu (Pernambuco, Brazil) bearing fruits with symptoms caused by Steneotarsonemus species was selected, and a total of 943 fruits from 2–8-month-old bunches were collected for mite quantification and identification. Consequently, Steneotarsonemus concavuscutum Lofego and Gondim Jr., Steneotarsonemus furcatus De Leon, and four morphospecies of Tarsonemus were found under the perianths of coconut fruits growing along the coast of northeastern Brazil. In Igarassu, the most abundant tarsonemid was S. concavuscutum, representing 98.4% of all quantified mites. Populations of S. concavuscutum were observed in all fruit bunches, regardless of age (ranging from 19 to 167 mites/fruit), with the highest numbers occurring in the 6-month-old bunches. In this same geographic location, Neoseiulus baraki (Athias-Henriot) represented 99.0% of the predaceous phytoseiid mites, with a population ranging from 0.04 to 5.3 mites/fruit that attained the highest population levels on 7-month-old fruit bunches. When the Amazonian rain forest is cut to create pasture, some of the original vegetal species survive clearing, even expressing their ability to invade agro-systems. It is true of the babassu palm, which can be considered, paradoxically, a natural resource by the "Interstate Movement of Babassu Fruit Breaker Women" or as native weed by land owners-farmers. To manage potential conflict of land uses, we study here the current density of this palm tree in different habitats, based on a combination of field data and remote sensing data. Firstly, we checked that the field survey methodology (i.e., counting free-trunk palm trees over 20 cm in circumference) provides density values compatible with those stemming from satellite images interpretation. We can see then that, a PA-Benfica Brazilian territory revealed an average density of the babassu lower in pastures (2.86 ind/ha) than in the dense forest (4.72 ind/ha) from which they originate and than in fallow land (4.31 ind/ha). We analyze in detail density data repartition in three habitats and we discuss results from the literature on the density of this palm tree versus its resilience at different developmental stages after forest clearing, depending on anthropogenic-or not-factors, including solar radiation, fire, weeding, clear cutting, burying fruit, and competition with forage grass. All these results can be exploited for the design of future management plans for the babassu palm and we think that the linked methodology and interdisciplinary approach can be extended to others palms and trees species in similar problematic issues.

Phoenix roebelenii is a palm species widely used in Brazil due to its exuberant leaves and adaptability to different climatic variations. For proper propagation, detailed information about seed viability, vigor and longevity subjected to dehydration and storage is yet to be obtained. For this purpose, the present research comprised two stages. The first one aimed at evaluating the response of seeds to desiccation and storage based on formal protocols. In the second stage, seeds were desiccated to 33, 30, 25, 23, 20, 18, 16, 12, 10 and 7% of water content by monitoring water loss in a convection oven at 35±2°C. After reaching each established water content, the seeds were subjected to germination tests. At 65 days after sowing, root length, root area, volume and diameter, shoot and eophyll length, and total seedling fresh and dry weights, were measured. Significant increases in germination and eophyll length were observed for lower seed water contents. Aversely, collar diameter decreased with seed desiccation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acrocomia spp., a genus of wild-growing palms in the neotropics, is rapidly gaining interest as a promising multipurpose crop. Diverse products can be derived from various components of the palm, the oils being of highest interest. Acrocomia shows similar oil yield and fatty acid composition to the African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis). It is, however, able to cope with a wider range of environmental conditions, including temporary water scarcity and lower temperatures, thus potentially a more sustainable alternative to its tropical counterpart. Acrocomia's research history is recent compared to other traditional crops and thus knowledge gaps, uncertainty, and challenges need to be addressed. This review attempts to assess the acrocomia's preparedness for cultivation by highlighting the state-of-the-art in research and identifying research gaps. Based on a systematic literature search following a value web approach, it (a) provides a comprehensive overview of research topics, (b) shows the development of publication activities over time and the drivers of this development, and (c) compiles main findings to assess the acrocomia's preparedness for commercial cultivation. Our results confirm its multipurpose characteristic as a potential feedstock for manifold sectors. Research has continued to increase over the last decade, especially on A. aculeata and is driven by the interest in bioenergy. Increasing knowledge on botany has contributed to understanding the genetic diversity and genus-specific biology. This has enabled applied research on seed germination and propagation toward domestication and initial plantation activities, mostly in Brazil. Main research gaps are associated with genotype–environment interaction, planting material, crop management, and sustainable cropping systems. Overall, we conclude that acrocomia is at an early phase of development as an alternative and multipurpose crop and its up-scaling requires the integration of sustainability strategies tailored to location-based social-ecological conditions. The use of agro-industrial waste may represent an alternative to reduce the costs of purchasing commercial substrates by producers of passion fruit seedlings, and carnaúba palm bagana is an alternative for the Northeastern Brazilian region. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the production of yellow passion fruit seedlings in substrates based on carnaúba bagana in different proportions with soil. The experiment was conducted in the experimental area of the Agrometeorological Station of Fortaleza, Pici Campus, Federal University of Ceará, Brazil, in a completely randomized design, whose treatments consisted of substrates formulated from the combination of different proportions of carnaúba bagana (CB) and soil: Soil (100%) + CB (0%); Soil (75%) + CB (25%); Soil (50%) + CB (50%); Soil (25%) + CB (75%); and Soil (0%) + CB (100%). The presence of CB, regardless of its proportion in the substrate, leads to the best results in photosynthesis and Dickson quality index (DQI) in yellow passion fruit seedlings. The best morphological responses were obtained with CB proportions greater than 50%, which also led to greater accumulation of nutrients in the shoots. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The environmental unsustainability of African oil palm crops is a growing worldwide concern, and the macauba palm in tropical Southern America surges as the most viable substitute for the production of first‐generation biodiesel as a renewable fuel. Large‐scale cultivation of the macauba palm, however, is bound to suffer a major setback due to the fast emergence of a florivorous pest threat, Cyclocephala forsteri, a scarab beetle species that can severely reduce fruit yield. Like other congenerics, female and male C. forsteri are night‐foraging and driven in large numbers to macauba palm inflorescences by specific volatile organic compounds. In the present study, we assessed the kairomonal cues involved in this plant–florivore interaction and their potential application in selective pest management strategies. Headspace samples of the floral fragrance of macauba palms at our study site in Central Brazil were largely dominated by 4‐methylanisole (>97% relative amount), which along with the minor constituents 2‐isopropyl‐3‐methoxypyrazine and 2‐sec‐butyl‐3‐methoxypyrazine triggered electroantennographic responses from both female and male C. forsteri. Field behavioural assays evidenced that beetles of this species were exclusively attracted to scented traps baited with 4‐methylanisole. Increased total scent discharge attained with an ultrasonic piezoelectric diffuser has positively influenced attractiveness efficiency of the trapping setup. 4‐Methylanisole is hereby identified as yet another volatile kairomone involved in highly selective attraction of potential pest florivorous cyclocephaline scarabs associated with economically exploitable palms and should be viewed as a key element in short‐term integrated management plans for the cultivation of the macauba palm in South America. Roosting habits of disk-winged bats of the genus Thyroptera (Chiroptera: Thyropteridae) have been unknown to very poorly known except for those of the commonly encountered T. tricolor. Many secondary literature publications state that roosting habits of Thyroptera in general are those of tricolor, known to roost almost exclusively in vertical, unfurling large leaves, especially of native Heliconia and introduced banana (genus Musa). However, so far as known, no other species of Thyroptera chooses such roosts. Until 1993, the only species of Thyroptera known were tricolor and discifera--they had been the only two known for 139 years. During this long period, the unique roosting habits of tricolor often were attributed to the genus as a whole, as sometimes still happens today. Now there are three more known species--lavali, devivoi, and wynneae. In this paper, we correct misconceptions concerning roosting habits in Thyroptera, summarize what is known for all five species, and provide the first detailed observations on roosting in discifera. Thyroptera discifera has been found roosting attached to the underside of a palm leaflet or leaflets in Brazil and in conically curled portions of dead banana leaves in Costa Rica. Los hábitos de selección de refugios de los murciélagos de ventosas del género Thyroptera (Chiroptera: Thyropteridae) han sido desconocidos o muy poco conocidos, con excepción a los hábitos de T. tricolor, que es la especie que se encuentra comúnmente. Muchas publicaciones de literatura secundaria afirman que los hábitos de selección de refugio de los Thyroptera en general son los mismos que los de tricolor, que son conocidos por descansar casi exclusivamente en hojas grandes verticales y parcialmente enrolladas, especialmente hojas de Heliconia nativa y banano introducido (género Musa). Sin embargo, por el momento no se conoce ninguna otra especie de Thyroptera que elija este tipo de refugio. Hasta 1993, las únicas especies de Thyroptera conocidas eran tricolor y discifera y habían sido las únicas dos especies conocidas durante 139 años. Durante este largo período, los hábitos particulares de selección de refugios de tricolor frecuentemente se atribuyeron a todo género, como a veces todavía sucede hoy en día. Actualmente se conocen tres especies más en este género: lavali, devivoi y wynneae. En este artículo, corregimos los conceptos erróneos sobre selección de refugios en Thyroptera, resumimos lo que se conoce de las cinco especies y brindamos las primeras observaciones detalladas sobre la selección de refugios de discifera. The peach palm (Bactris gasipaes Kunth) is a palm tree native to the Amazon region, with plantations expanding to the Brazilian Southwest and South regions. This work is a critical review of historical, botanical, social, environmental, and nutritional aspects of edible and nonedible parts of the plant. In Brazil, the importance of the cultivation of B. gasipaes to produce palm heart has grown considerably, due to its advantages in relation to other palm species, such as precocity, rusticity and tillering. The last one is especially important, as it makes the exploitation of peach palm hearts, contrary to what happens with other palm tree species, a non-predatory practice. Of special interest are the recent efforts aiming at the valorization of the fruit as a source of carotenoids and starch. Further developments indicate that the B. gasipaes lignocellulosic wastes hold great potential for being upcycled into valuable biotechnological products such as prebiotics, enzymes, cellulose nanofibrils and high fiber flours. Clean technologies are protagonists of the recovery processes, ensuring the closure of the product's life cycle in a "green" way. Future research should focus on expanding and making the recovery processes economically viable, which would be of great importance for stimulating the peach palm production chain. Butia odorata is an endangered palm tree native of southern Brazil and Uruguay with great food and ornamental potential. The lack of phytotechnical information hinders the commercial production of their seedlings. The aim of this work was to test doses of fertilization on the formation of B. odorata seedlings and tolerance to salinity levels in the substrate. The seedlings were cultivated in containers, submitted to control and four doses of fertilizer per liter of substrate. We evaluated stem diameter, number of leaves and pinnate leaves, electrical conductivity (EC) and pH of the substrate. The experimental design was in random blocks with 10 plants per treatment. Dry density, air space, and total pore space of the substrate were within the ideal ranges, such as EC and pH, without a significant trend for these last two variables in relation to the doses of fertilizers. Throughout the experiment, the pH remained adequate, except for higher dosage treatments that acidified the substrate. EC increased gradually, except for control treatment. There was a significant difference between treatments and blocks for plant variables, with the second access plants presenting larger stem diameter. The dosages that induced higher responses were 0.6 and 1.2 g L-1 with EC corresponding to 5 mS cm-1, which is possibly the limit of salts in the substrate tolerated by the species. B. odorata responded positively to the fertilization during the formation of the seedlings. However, until the juvenile phase, its development is impaired if EC reaches 5 mS cm-1. Subject to overexploitation in the past centuries, the Atlantic Forest is subject to very rigorous protection rules. However, the law is a controversial issue since landowners are not compensated for the limited choice of land use possibilities. We believe that, alternatively to a general timber harvest ban, sustainable forest management of the Atlantic Forest has the potential to generate income for the landowners while sustaining important ecological functions of the forest. Such choice would require better understanding of the potential effects of timber harvesting on the forest ecosystem and on species composition and succession over time. In this context, we assessed the harvesting impact of a conventional harvesting method (CM) and compared it to an alternative harvesting method (AM) in three different stands (stands A, B and C) of a secondary forest fragment in southern Brazil. Results from three comprehensive forest inventories over a period of two years were used to assess the timber harvesting impact. Measurements of species composition (i.e., number of species, life form, ecological group), forest structure (i.e., density, basal area, DBH, volume) and saplings density formed the basis of the impact assessment. The inventories were carried out before, immediately after and two years after harvesting. Intensities of damage on remnant trees immediately after harvesting and two years after harvesting were also measured. Before harvesting, a total of 114 tree species (trees, tree fern and palm tree) belonging to 49 families were identified in the study site's three research stands. Palm trees and secondary species, such as Euterpe edulis, represented the majority of recruited individuals (DBH ≥ 5 cm) two years after harvesting. However, new saplings (DBH ≤ 5 cm) after two years were mainly pioneer woody tree species, such as Cecropia glaziovii and Schizolobium parahyba. On average, AM reduced damage to saplings by 5%. Most of the damages caused by CM were moderate to severe, while AM caused light to moderate damages. Binary logistic regression indicated dependency of the mortality rates on the independent variables "stand, stem and leaning damages." On the other hand, the recovery rates of damaged trees were dependent on crown, stem and leaning damages. Therefore, two years after harvesting a higher mortality rate of low-dimensional trees was observed in stands with high density of smaller trees and high density of improvement felling. Population dynamic studies help understand how biotic and abiotic factors can affect pest populations and their natural enemies. The red palm mite, Raoiella indica Hirst (Acari: Tenuipalpidae), is an invasive species that severely damages coconut and banana trees and threatens several Arecaceae species in the Americas. In the present study, populations of R. indica were monthly monitored for 16 months in a coconut plantation in Boa Vista, Roraima, Brazil, to evaluate the contribution of natural enemies and climatic factors on population dynamics of this pest. Linear models were adjusted to determine how average air temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, and predators affect the abundance of R. indica over time. Rainfall and high air temperatures were the main factors reducing R. indica populations. During the drier months of the year, from September to March (average temperatures approximately 27.6 °C), the densities of R. indica were highest, and severe damage, such as yellowing and leaf necrosis, was observed on the plants. The most abundant predator was Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) (Acari: Phytoseiidae). Its density was positively influenced by R. indica and negatively affected by rainfall and high temperatures. Furthermore, the population of A. largoensis was reduced in drier periods and grew slower than R. indica after this period; thus, studies evaluating the release of this predator at the beginning of the rainy season are necessary to assess its effectiveness in regulating R. indica. Butia odorata (Barb. Rodr.) Noblick is a palm tree that grows in savanna‐like formations in subtropical regions of South America, and whose regeneration is threatened by agricultural management. Its diaspores are dormant after dispersal which takes place during the summer and early autumn. The aim of this study was to investigate seasonal and microhabitat effects on the germination and seedling recruitment of this palm species. Diaspores were sown in the field, in both open lands and forest patches. During 2 years, we measured seed germination, viability and moisture, seedling emergence and germination response to warm stratification of those seeds that failed to germinate in the field. Germination was concentrated during the summer, when soil temperatures were highest, whilst seedling emergence peaked in the autumn and early winter, when temperature and humidity conditions became less extreme. In open lands, there were two pulses of germination (first and second summer), whilst in forest patches, a single pulse (second summer) was detected. Although overall germination did not differ between microhabitats, the percentage of seedling emergence from seeds that remained buried until the end of the experiment was almost twice as large in the forest patches compared with open areas. The viability of seeds declined over time, particularly in open areas. Laboratory‐induced warm stratification was found to act on seed dormancy release in a cyclic way, being far more effective on seeds retrieved from the field in spring–summer months than in those retrieved in the winter. This cyclic pattern of dormancy in B. odorata seeds results in major seedling recruitment after the summer, under wetter and cooler conditions, thus reducing mortality risk. Copernicia prunifera (Miller) H. E. Moore is a palm tree native to Brazil. The products obtained from its leaf extracts are a source of income for local families and the agroindustry. Owing to the reduction of natural habitats and the absence of a sustainable management plan, the maintenance of the natural populations of this palm tree has been compromised. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the diversity and genetic structure of 14 C. prunifera populations using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) identified through genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) to provide information that contributes to the conservation of this species. A total of 1,013 SNP markers were identified, of which 84 loci showed outlier behavior and may reflect responses to natural selection. Overall, the level of genomic diversity was compatible with the biological aspects of this species. The inbreeding coefficient (f) was negative for all populations, indicating excess heterozygotes. Most genetic variations occurred within populations (77.26%), and a positive correlation existed between genetic and geographic distances. The population structure evaluated through discriminant analysis of principal components (DAPC) revealed low genetic differentiation between populations. The results highlight the need for efforts to conserve C. prunifera as well as its distribution range to preserve its global genetic diversity and evolutionary potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Macaw palm (Acrocomia aculeata Jacq.) is an oleaginous palm native to the American continent. It produces oil and has other important characteristics for the industry. In 2022, a severe disease causing basal stem rot, root rot, and plant mortality in a nursery and the field was detected on macaw palm plants in a farm, in João Pinheiro, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. From the rot symptomatic tissue of affected palms, two Phytophthora isolates were obtained by indirect isolation and were grown on PDA. Based on the morphological characteristics, particularly the coenocytic hyphae and papillate sporangia, the isolates were identified as Phytophthora palmivora. For phylogenetic analyses, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions, β-tubulin gene (TUB), translation elongation factor 1-alpha gene (EF1-α), and two mitochondrial genes: cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COXI) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit II (COXII), were amplified. Phylogenetic analyses confirmed that it is the species P. palmivora. Fulfillment of the Koch's postulates through pathogenicity test confirmed that P. palmivora was the causal agent of root rot and basal stem rot disease in macaw palm. The presence of the red palm mite Raoiella indica Hirst, was recorded on açaí, Euterpe oleracea Mart. (Arecaceae), in Porto Seguro, Bahia State, northeastern Brazil. We evaluated the population dynamics of R. indica from September 2019 to February 2020. The population outbreak and most severe damage caused by R. indica was observed in February, a period of highest temperatures and low relative humidity. This is the first report of damage caused by the red palm mite on E. oleracea in Brazil. Management practices must be implemented to avoid intercropping açaí with other hosts of this mite e.g. coconut, banana and palm trees in order to minimize the occurrence and damage of R. indica on such agrosystems.
