In 2014, the World Cup will be staged in Brazil. Is Brazil able to ensure safe street food is on offer? This paper seeks to elicit reflection on some problems relating to the sale of street food, thereby contributing to highlight this theme in the food security agenda in Brazil. The scope of this study is exclusively street food. Care is taken not to reduce the broader concepts of food security and the importance of sanitary and hygienic handling is stressed as one of the core components of food and nutrition security. In this context the following aspects are discussed: the credibility of the official data on insanitary outbreaks related to street food; street food security compared to that in other eating environments; and the training of people to modify inadequate food handling practices. Thus, in the discussion about problems in the street food market it is essential to improve the quantity and quality of the training of food handlers in order to implement food and nutrition security as promoting the human right to adequate food and ensure that the topic is urgently included on the national calendar of public health debates.

The current work presents results from a cognitive task analysis (CTA) of a nuclear disaster simulation. Audio-visual records were collected from an emergency room team composed of individuals from 26 different agencies as they responded to multiple scenarios in a simulated nuclear disaster. This simulation was part of a national emergency response training activity for a nuclear power plant located in a developing country. The objectives of this paper are to describe sources of resilience and brittleness in these activities, identify cues of potential improvements for future emergency simulations, and leveraging the resilience of the emergency response system in case of a real disaster. Multiple CTA techniques were used to gain a better understanding of the cognitive dimensions of the activity and to identify team coordination and crisis management patterns that emerged from the simulation exercises., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd and The Ergonomics Society. Purpose: This paper presents the initial experience with thrombolysis for acute ischaemic stroke at Hospital de Base do Distrito Federal (HBDF), Brazil, and the difficulties associated with the implementation of this treatment., Method: A retrospective study was performed using the medical records of all patients with acute stroke who were treated with intravenous alteplase in our department, between May 2011 and April 2012., Results: The thrombolytic therapy was administered to 32 patients. The mean time between the ictus and the start of stroke therapy start was 195 (60-270) minutes. Sixteen patients demonstrated a significant clinical improvement (decrease in National Institute Health Stroke Scale [NIHSS] score≥4 points in 24 hours); 6 patients were discharged with an NIHSS score of 0 and 2 demonstrated haemorrhagic transformation., Conclusions: The results of our study are similar to those reported in the literature, although we have been dealing with difficulties, such as the lack of a stroke unit.

In the present paper, we described the first record of an epibiont protozoan Epistylis sp. Ehrenberg, 1830 (Ciliophora, Peritrichia) attached to Ergasilus chelangulatus Thatcher and Brasil-Sato, 2008, parasite of Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède, 1803 in Brazil, with electron microscope observations. Fish were collected in Veados River, state of São Paulo and the crustacean Ergasilus chelangulatus being registered for the first time in this river, expanding its geographical distribution in Brazil.

Natal teeth erupt in utero, whereas neonatal teeth present during the first month of life. The lower central incisors are the most frequently affected teeth. The etiology is unknown, and the choice of treatment depends on several factors. The purpose of this paper is to review 23 cases of children with natal or neonatal teeth who attended a dental care program in a university maternal and infant oral health clinic. There was no gender predilection. Most were natal teeth (83 percent) and presented a mild degree of mobility (64 percent). Only two patients had breast-feeding difficulties (nine percent). Tooth maintenance was the most common treatment of choice (64 percent), and only two patients presented Riga-Fede disease (nine percent).

Objective: congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) newborn screening can prevent neonatal mortality in children with the salt-wasting form of the disease and prevent incorrect gender assignments, which can occur in females. However, the occurrence of false-positive results in preterm or low-birth-weight newborns creates some diagnostic difficulties, with consequent therapeutic implications. This study aimed to report the results of a pilot project for neonatal CAH screening conducted in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil from 09/2007 to 05/2008 with a three-year follow-up., Methods: dried blood specimens were collected on filter paper cards three to seven days after birth of all newborns in the period. Samples were analyzed for 17-hydroxyprogesterone using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)., Results: a total of 159,415 children were screened. The apparent incidence of the classic variant of the disease was 1:9,963, based on initial diagnoses following newborn screening. During the follow-up period, eight of 16 children initially diagnosed with CAH were reclassified as unaffected, resulting in a revised incidence of 1:19,927. The false-positive rate was 0.31%, and the positive predictive value was 2.1%. Sensitivity and specificity were 100% and 99.7%, respectively., Conclusions: newborn screening is an important public health policy in developing countries such as Brazil, where CAH remains underdiagnosed. It has great potential to identify children with the disease who otherwise cannot be diagnosed earlier. Long-term follow-up and monitoring of all children with positive screening results are crucial to ensure a correct diagnosis and to calculate a reliable incidence ratio of the disease., (Copyright © 2014 Sociedade Brasileira de Pediatria. Schistosomiasis is a transmissible parasitic disease caused by the etiologic agent Schistosoma mansoni, whose intermediate hosts are snails of the genus Biomphalaria. The main goal of this paper is to estimate the prevalence of schistosomiasis in Minas Gerais State in Brazil using spatial disease information derived from the state transportation network of roads and rivers. The spatial information was incorporated in two ways: by introducing new variables that carry spatial neighborhood information and by using spatial regression models. Climate, socioeconomic and environmental variables were also used as co-variables to build models and use them to estimate a risk map for the whole state of Minas Gerais. The results show that the models constructed from the spatial regression produced a better fit, providing smaller root mean square error (RMSE) values. When no spatial information was used, the RMSE for the whole state of Minas Gerais reached 9.5%; with spatial regression, the RMSE reaches 8.8% (when the new variables are added to the model) and 8.5% (with the use of spatial regression). Variables representing vegetation, temperature, precipitation, topography, sanitation and human development indexes were important in explaining the spread of disease and identified certain conditions that are favorable for disease development. The use of spatial regression for the network of roads and rivers produced meaningful results for health management procedures and directing activities, enabling better detection of disease risk areas., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. The article presents the author's views on the article "Reducing intoxication among bar patrons: some lessons from prevention of drinking and driving," by K. Graham and colleagues. The paper was focused on the enforcement of the laws for restricting the intoxication among bar patrons. Role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the formation of laws for drinking and driving is discussed.
