The duration and extent of sediment routing systems are intrinsically linked to crustal‐ to mantle‐scale processes. Therefore, distinct changes in the geodynamic regime may be captured in the detrital record. This study attempts to reconstruct the sediment routing system of the Canning Basin (Western Australia) during the Early Cretaceous to decipher its depositional response to Mesozoic‐Cenozoic supercontinent dispersal. Specifically, we reconstruct source‐to‐sink relationships for the Broome Sandstone (Dampier Peninsula) and proximal modern sediments through multi‐proxy analysis of detrital zircon (U–Pb, Lu–Hf and trace elements) and detrital rutile (U–Pb and trace elements). Multi‐proxy comparison of detrital signatures and potential sources reveals that the majority of the detrital zircon and rutile grains are ultimately sourced from crystalline basement in central Australia (Musgrave Province and Arunta region) and that proximal sediment supply (i.e., Kimberley region) is negligible. However, a significant proportion of detritus might be derived from intermediate sedimentary sources in central Australia (e.g., Amadeus Basin) rather than directly from erosion of crystalline basement. Broome Sandstone data are consistent with a large‐scale drainage system with headwaters in central Australia. Contextualization with other broadly coeval drainage systems suggests that central Australia acted as a major drainage divide during the Early Cretaceous. Importantly, reorganization after supercontinent dispersal is characterized by the continuation of a sediment pathway remnant of an earlier transcontinental routing system originating in Antarctica that provided a template for Early Cretaceous drainage. Review of older Canning Basin strata implies a prolonged denudation history of central Australian lithologies. These observations are consistent with the long‐lived intracontinental tectonic activity of central Australia governing punctuated sediment generation and dispersion more broadly across Australia and emphasize the impact of deep Earth processes on sediment routing systems. Garnet is a fundamental expression of metamorphism and one of the most important minerals used to constrain the thermal conditions of the crust. We used innovative in situ laser-ablation ICP-MS/MS Lu-Hf geochronology to demonstrate that garnet in metapelitic rocks enclosing Cambrian eclogite in southern Australia formed during Laurentian Mesoproterozoic metamorphism. Garnet porphyroblasts in amphibolite-facies metapelitic rocks yielded Lu-Hf ages between 1286 ± 58 Ma and 1241 ± 16 Ma, revealing a record of older metamorphism that was partially obscured by metamorphic overprinting during ca. 510 Ma Cambrian subduction along the East Gondwana margin. Existing detrital zircon age data indicate the protoliths to the southern Australian metapelitic rocks were sourced from western Laurentia. We propose that the metapelitic rocks of southern Australia represent a fragment of western Laurentian crust, which was separated from Laurentia in the Neoproterozoic and incorporated into the East Gondwana subduction system during the Cambrian. The ability to obtain Lu-Hf isotopic data from garnet at acquisition rates comparable to those for U-Pb analysis of detrital zircon means, for the first time, the metamorphic parentage of rocks as expressed by garnet can be efficiently accessed to assist paleogeographic reconstructions. This study investigates the prospectivity for porphyry Cu mineralisation of the early Paleozoic Loch Lilly-Kars Belt, which follows the southern margin of the Paleoproterozoic Broken Hill (Willyama) Inlier in western New South Wales, Australia. The belt is thought to have resulted from the 515–510 Ma collision of a volcanic passive margin and an intra-oceanic island arc above a west-dipping subduction zone, with subsequent post-collisional magmatism. To identify fertility signals of selected magmatic intrusive rocks, we combined whole-rock analyses with in-situ zircon trace-element and isotopic measurements. Data reveal that both Cambrian (ca 496 Ma) and Devonian (ca 393 Ma) intrusive suites are present in the Loch Lilly-Kars Belt. Cambrian dioritic rocks are largely non-fertile for porphyry Cu mineralisation, whereas Devonian monzodiorites and monzonitic porphyries carry strong fertility signals that include high whole-rock Sr/Y (>35) and V/Sc (>10) values, associated with the occurrence of equant, stubby zircons showing relatively constant Eu/Eu* values without any significant Eu anomalies. Although only few samples were analysed and more intensive exploration is required, the results of this study indicate significant potential for porphyry Cu mineralisation in this poorly known belt. • U–Pb data from fast pulse LA-ICP-MS is equivalent with conventional U–Pb analysis. • Provenance of the largely unexposed Yeneena Basin revealed. • Exotic sources support a transcontinental transport system across Rodinia. Over ten thousand detrital zircon U–Pb analyses on thirty four samples were undertaken using a fast pulse laser ablation protocol from the Neoprotoerozoic rocks of the largely unexposed Yeneena and northwestern Officer Basins in Western Australia. In addition, conventional laser ablation detrital zircon U–Pb geochronology was carried out on three of the samples. A comparison of the two datasets demonstrated that no statistical significant difference was observed in the detrital zircon spectra between the two techniques. The results of the detrital zircon analyses reveal that after an intial pulse of material dominated by Archean detritus the sediment are dominated by Mesoproterozic sources. This indicates that there is little variation in source materials within and between the identified formations. The major age peaks coincide with magmatic rock ages from within Australia. The results indicate that either the Palaeoproterozoic and Mesoproterozoic terranes remained sources throughout the deposition of the Yeneena and northwestern Officer Basins during the Neoproterozoic, or that recycling of zircons occurred within a quasi-closed system for the duration of sedimentation. The remaining 10 % of grains are difficult to reconcile with magmatic suites of any significant volume within Australia. However, when considering the broader palaeogeographic context at the time the sediments are inferred to have been deposited, rocks from Dronning Maud Land and the Kalahari Craton can supply grains of appropriate ages and are consistent with the known paleocurrent directions. This work demonstrates that there is no significant disadvantage in the application of the fast pulse technique when applied to the collection of U–Pb detrital zircon datasets for the purpose of detrital zircon fingerprinting. U-Pb dating and Hf-isotope provenance analysis of detrital zircons from the glaciogenic lower Permian Grant Group of the Canning Basin indicate sources principally from basement terranes in central Australia, with subordinate components from terranes to the south and north. Integrating these data with field outcrop and subsurface evidence for ice sheets, including glacial valleys and striated pavements along the southern and northern margins of the basin, suggests that continental ice sheets extended over several Precambrian upland areas of western and central Australia during the late Paleozoic ice age (LPIA). The youngest zircons constrain the maximum age for contemporaneous ice sheet development to the late Carboniferous (Kasimovian), whereas palynology provides a minimum age of early Permian (Asselian-Sakmarian). Considering the palynological age of the Grant Group within the context of regional and global climate proxies, the main phase of continental ice sheet growth was possibly in the Ghzelian-Asselian. The presence of ice sheets older than Kasimovian in western and central Australia remains difficult to prove given a regional gap in deposition possibly covering the mid-Bashkirian to early Ghzelian within the main depocentres and even larger along basin margins, and the poor evidence for older Carboniferous glacial facies. There is also no evidence for extensive glacial facies younger than mid-Sakmarian in this region as opposed to eastern Australia where the youngest regional glacial phase was Guadalupian. The Columbia (Nuna) supercontinent existed from approximately 1.9 Ga to 1.3 Ga. Laurentia was part of Columbia, and the western edge of Laurentia (current coordinates) was likely proximal to a large landmass during parts of this interval. Here, we present detrital zircon ages of a Paleoproterozoic sedimentary succession in northern Yukon, Canada, that bear on the evolution of Columbia. The sedimentary succession is preserved as clasts within 1.60 Ga hydrothermal megabreccias. Analyses of detrital zircon reveal abundant 1.78–1.68 Ga zircon with evolved Hf isotope values (−16.1 < εHf(t) < +1.4). Sm-Nd isotope analysis on clasts yields εNdi from −5.3 to −5.5 and model ages from 2.4 to 2.2 Ga. The detrital zircon age distribution is strikingly similar to those from sedimentary megaclasts in the ca. 1.59 Ga Olympic Dam Breccia Complex on the Gawler Craton of Australia. The whole rock Sm-Nd ratios are consistent with derivation from the Gawler Craton. We propose that the sedimentary material contained in both breccia complexes was derived from an overlap assemblage deposited on Australia and Laurentia at ca. 1.6 Ga. This model supports a previous hypothesis that the Gawler Craton was connected to northwestern Laurentia at ca. 1.6 Ga, and that these regions shared a single hydrothermal province that is recognized in northwestern Laurentia as the Wernecke Breccia and in the Gawler Craton as the Olympic Dam Breccia Complex and associated IOCG deposits. The sedimentary overlap succession was deposited after collision between Australia and Laurentia. Australia was subsequently translated southward along the Laurentian margin, placing the Gawler Craton next to southwestern Laurentia and the Mt. The Adelaide Superbasin (Adelaide Rift Complex, Stuart Shelf, Torrens Hinge Zone, Coombalarnie Platform, and Cambrian Stansbury and Arrowie Basins) is a vast sedimentary basin in southern Australia that initiated due to the break-up of central Rodinia and, evolved into the Australian passive margin on edge of the Pacific Basin. Rocks within it contain evidence for the evolving earth system through the Neoproterozoic, including type sections of the Ediacaran fauna, Sturtian and Marinoan glaciations, and the GSSP for the base of the Ediacaran period. Much research over the last century has unravelled the lithostratigraphy and sedimentology of the basin. Despite this, the rocks are poorly dated, and their sedimentary provenance and link with tectonic geography is poorly known. This poor chronology hampers global and local efforts to gain a detailed understanding and chronological framework of the interplay between tectonics and momentous changes to the earth system during this time. This paper presents a comprehensive database of detrital zircon geochronology and review of geochronology for the Neoproterozoic of the Adelaide Superbasin, highlighting the stratigraphic, and spatial locations of available data. In the north of the basin, zircons were sourced locally in the initial stages of rifting, ca. 830 Ma—from the adjacent Gawler Craton and Curnamona Province. During the late Tonian, detritus was transported along graben from the north-west, from the Musgrave Orogen, as the rift basin developed during the opening of the nascent Pacific Ocean. Cryogenian icesheets punctuate the detrital record with an ephemeral return to more localised rift shoulder sources. In the Ediacaran, there is an increasing influence of younger (<740 Ma) detrital zircon from an enigmatic source that we interpret to be from southern (i.e. Antarctic) sources, with a corresponding shift in the late Mesoproterozoic age peaks, from ca. 1180 Ma to ca. 1090 Ma, and corresponding decrease in older, ca. 1600 Ma, detritus. These changes in sediment source reflect the changing tectonic geography and large-scale environmental influence of the Cryogenian glaciations as the basin evolved from a local rift, to a larger rift basin and finally to a continental margin, with sedimentary input becoming increasingly restricted over time.
