This paper presents the results of a study on the isotopic ecology of guanacos in central western Argentina. We examine the historical population ecology of guanacos using stable isotope analysis of bone collagen from pre-Hispanic and modern guanaco populations (n = 129), considering variability in two ecoregions: the Monte hot desert and the Andean-Patagonian cold desert. Our study addresses the consistency of guanaco diets over time, evaluating palaeoecology to provide information for conservation of this taxon. We found significant differences in isotopic niche size between modern and archaeological guanacos. When analyzed by ecoregion, there were significant differences in niche size through time, indicating that guanacos had distinctive dietary habits and occupied different ecological niches across the ecoregions. Comparing Standard Ellipse Areas (SEA) through time and across space, we observed that the archaeological SEA for guanacos is smaller than its modern counterpart in the Andean-Patagonia ecoregion. Conversely, in Monte, the archaeological SEA is larger than the one established for modern samples. The contrast between pre-Hispanic and modern populations highlight the impact of human activity and conservation efforts on the distribution and ecology of guanacos. The Salado and Verde streams constitute the two main seasonally available freshwater courses that flow into the Atlantic coast of the Río Negro province (continental Patagonia, Argentina, 42° South). This would have favored their use in the past as corridors for human circulation between the coast and the interior. This paper presents the results of the technomorphological and geochemical analyses of the obsidian artifacts recovered in the area to constrain mobility. The results allow us to propose the existence of toolkit reconditioning or replacement activities, and the identification of different sources of provenance of the obsidians (Sacanana, Telsen, and Portada Covunco, distant up to 800 km from the study area), reinforcing the hypothesis of a coast–inland circulation, with the possible existence of circuits of exchange of this raw material. Background and aims: The Funga of the Patagonian Nothofagus forests is being studied since the late 19th century, but despite many efforts is still far from being completely known. The aim of this paper is to present detailed descriptions and data on geographical distribution of some genera and species of mitosporic ascomycetes that constitute new records for Argentina and for the Neotropical Region. M&M: Bark and woody debris from native Nothofagaceae were collected and studied. Reproductive structures were hand-sectioned and examined following traditional mycological techniques. Results: Six species of mitosporic ascomycetes were identified: Avettaea salvadorae, Bactrodesmium atrum, Dwiroopa ramya, Gilmaniella multiporosa, Monodictys paradoxa and Pycnopeziza quisquiliaris. Full descriptions, comments on identification and data on distribution and habitat of each species are provided, along with photographs illustrating diagnostic features. Conclusions: Two genera, Dwiroopa and Pycnopeziza, and one species, M. paradoxa, are registered for the first time in the Neotropical Region, two other species are first recorded in South America (B. atrum and G. multiporosa). Bioarchaeological research of bone growth patterns provides information on the health status and disease of past populations. Recent studies have pointed out the potential of metric analysis of nonadult vertebrae as indicators of stress during different stages of ontogeny, highlighting that most vertebral measurements present low sexual dimorphism, a stable and known pattern of growth and give useful information even in incomplete spines. The aims of this paper are first, to construct a vertebral growth profile for nonadults of a skeletal series of Patagonian Late Holocene hunter‐gatherers from Salitroso Lake (SAC); second, to compare it to the ones obtained in other archaeological and modern populations with different stress experiences; and third, building on this, to assess whether individuals with evidence of stress experienced in early development demonstrate different patterns in vertebral growth than those without. Two spinal dimensions are used: vertebral body height (VBH) and transverse diameter of the neural canal (TDNC) in a sample of 23 nonadult skeletons with ages previously estimated from dental and bone indicators. The vertebral dimensions of 20 adults between 18 and 35 years of age were also measured as reference information. Results show that the growth of the VBH is steady over the years and reaches adulthood size by approximately 16 years of age whereas TDNC dimensions do not experience marked fluctuations in size throughout life and adult dimensions are reached at approximately 4 years of age as expected. The vertebral growth pattern observed in SAC is similar to that obtained in other archaeological samples from very different settings but experiencing relatively high nutritional or pathological stress in early stages of life. However, it is markedly different, and systematically smaller, to the 20th century sample pattern, probably responding to a secular trend in the modern population with a more stable access to resources and medical treatment. In Argentina, the myths of the European origin of its population and the extinction of the original peoples have been in force for 140 years. They have had explanatory force to deny not only rights to native peoples but also to publicly affirm their very extinction. Since the end of the last military dictatorship (1976-1983) and the return of democracy, the existence and rights of native peoples have been recognized. At the same time, there was a strong criticism of the entire historiographical account that had supported these myths. However, in the present, the debate about history continues. In the current context of political confrontation between different models, we find new discourses that articulate old explanations based on those myths. After the tendency to criticize the traditional discourse, new revisionist and denialist proposals have been established, anchored in the current political context. These reuse and redefine the stereotypes of foreign and Chilean indigenous peoples, the myth of innate violence and the illegitimacy of the claim of rights by native peoples. These discursive constructions accompany a process of increasing violence towards the organizations and demands of the original peoples in Patagonia, where the Mapuche people are identified as an internal enemy. In this paper we propose to address this context taking into account the scientific production on the historical process of indigenous subjugation and incorporation into the state-nation-territory matrix in Argentina, focusing especially on the case of Patagonia and the Mapuche people. In order to understand the paleogeographic evolution of Viedma Lake (252 masl) sedimentary sequences with glaciolacustrine and lacustrine strata between 307 masl and 266 masl and bathymetric fluctuations between 27 ka. and 2.4 ka. were identified. The paleoenvironmental interpretation of the stratigraphic profiles was carried out based on the analysis of facies and their associations. The oldest age was recorded at 301 masl (27 ka) and the youngest corresponds to 266 masl (2.4 ka). The record of 27 ka was compared with another dated record of the Tar-San Martin Lakes basin showing that Viedma – Tar-San Martín Lakes were formed at similar ages. Taking into account that the deposits of Bahía Túnel are located at 266 masl and that the level of the lake would be above this height, it is proposed that this lake level would have restricted the movement of hunter-gatherer populations along the coast and to the west. From 2.4 ka on a new space started to be available for these populations broadening the wintering grounds (≤400 masl). The chronology of the archaeological record found in this new space fits the proposed paleogeographic evolution. This paper complements the research on the evolution of lacustrine systems in the Patagonian Mountain range and broadens the discussion of human mobility in the Viedma Lake basin during the Holocene. Nowadays, wildlife is one of the most important sources of zoonoses, and it is a major concern for public health. Nevertheless, little is known about the role of wildlife as a reservoir and source of infectious diseases in the past. South America presents a wide diversity of wildlife. In the south of the continent, Argentina shelters a large diversity of neotropical carnivores. Although the paleoparasitological studies on carnivores have been increasing in southern Argentina, most of the efforts have been focused in a handful of sites located in western Patagonia. In this paper, two coprolites of felid found in Cueva Galpón, an initial late Holocene mortuary site from northeast Patagonia (Argentina), were studied for paleoparasitological purposes. Samples were processed by rehydration and homogenization, filtered and processed by spontaneous sedimentation. The samples were assigned to Puma concolor (puma) or Panthera onca (jaguar). Microscopic observations revealed that both coprolites were positive for parasite remains. High parasite richness was observed. Six nematodes, one cestode, and one coccidian morphotypes were reported. This is the first time that Gnathostoma sp. and Spirocerca sp. were recovered from holocenic times from Patagonia. This finding implies that some diseases such as taeniasis, spirocercosis, gnathostomosis, ascariasis, and coccidiosis could be present in holocenic wildlife from Patagonia prior to the Spanish colonization and domestic animal introduction. The overall results suggest that felids could have played a role as reservoirs and source of some parasitic species, some of which are zoonotic. The Magallanes-Austral Foreland Basin preserves an important record of orogenesis and landscape evolution in the Patagonian Andes of Chile and Argentina. This paper evaluates the comparison between the thick Paleogene sequences in the Chilean Peninsula Brunswick (Chorrillo Chico and Agua Fresca formations) and the reduced Paleogene sequence (La Barca Formation) in the Punta Ainol locality, Argentina, by taking account of palynological and geochemical analyses. Warm and humid subtropical conditions (Subtropical Gondwanic Paleoflora) are inferred for the late Paleocene-Eocene interval studied. A new record of Lactoridaceae in the La Barca Formation expanded the known fossil range of this family in Patagonia. During the late Paleocene the Chorrillo Chico and La Barca formations would have been deposited mainly from hyperpycnal flows and this accumulation process continued until the Lutenian in the La Barca Formation. A relative rise in the sea level in the early Eocene would be recognized in both sections. In the middle Eocene a relative fall in the sea level would have occurred with increased terrigenous influx. The rate of sedimentation was similar in both sections during the Thanetian and Ypresian intervals according to the ages assigned by biostratigraphy, suggesting that the sedimentation rate would have been controlled mainly by relative changes in sea level during the Paleocene-Eocene transition. The relationship between climate and tourism has implications at all spatial scales. Yet the climatic sensitivity of tourism varies according to place-specific tourism types in which it takes place and activity type. Therefore, from comfort approach, the climatic features of destination are an important resource for planning. This paper evaluates the climate comfort of Argentina as an intangible resource for tourism. The analysis builds on spatial modelling of the Tourism Climate Index (TCI), calculated for 69 weather stations uniformly distributed throughout the country. The mean annual TCI in Argentina is 73, indicating "very good" climatic-tourist comfort conditions for tourism. However, the spatial distribution of the index exhibits a maximum diagonal band and two mirror regions defined by decreasing scores towards NE and SW. This is attributed to the spatial distribution of the sub-indices conforming the TCI. Daily thermal comfort and wind speed negatively influence Patagonia, while in Litoral, they counterbalance the high amounts of precipitation. This paper analyses a collection of engraved plaques from Golfo San Matías (Río Negro province) in order to assess design recurrences which might point to the presence of ornamentation rules and/or visual information coding among the hunter-gatherer peoples who produced and used them. Then, 170 plaques from Patagonia and other regions of Argentina are systematically compared using the presence of shared motif types as the main criterion. Data are assessed using a theoretical model with expectations which link design variability/standardization, ornamental laxity/structuration and informational heterogeneity/redundancy. Results show that plaques display low design standardization, which is compatible with a low redundancy communicative function (heterogeneous content) and/or with an ornamental function with lax rules. Our knowledge about the diversity of land planarians (Platyhelminthes: Geoplanidae) from the Andean‐Patagonian Forests is scarce compared with other forested biomes. These cold‐temperate forests are located in southern Chile and western Patagonia in Argentina, at the southern end of South America. Many species of land planarians from this region are known from descriptions based on a single or only a few specimens. Therefore, the finding of new material can reveal cryptic species, as well as anatomical or histological differences among specimens due to different maturation stages, physiological states, or intraspecific variation. In this paper, we focus on two geoplaninid species, Geoplana valdiviana and Amaga ruca, with the main goal of offering detailed re‐descriptions of both species (previously known from Chilean Patagonia) from new material recently found in Argentinean Patagonia. In this contribution, we added new information on histological and anatomical features of these species. After assessing taxonomically relevant anatomical characters together with DNA sequence data (mitochondrial COI gene and nuclear 18S rRNA gene), we took three taxonomic decisions: (a) G. valdiviana was removed from Geoplana and re‐allocated in the new genus Inakayalia; (b) Geoplana chanca and Geoplana tirua were also included in this new genus; and (c) A. ruca was split off from the genus Amaga and placed in the new monotypic genus Wallmapuplana. In Argentina, the Monte ecoregion extends for more than 2,000 km from NW Argentina to boreal Patagonia, and includes many salt-pans and barren flatlands colonized by the monophyletic Liolaemus anomalus group that includes seven species. Some of their external morphological characteristics and behaviors are very unusual for the genus, and this has led to a complex taxonomic history. The group is very poorly known except for a recent paper with descriptions of three species and morphological-based phylogenetic hypotheses. Of the four recognized species, two are threatened and one is vulnerable, and while the conservation status of the three recently described species is unknown, they are suspected to also be under some degree of threat. We reviewed all georeferenced localities known to produce a distribution map, and sequenced two mitochondrial and four nuclear genes, for representatives of all species. We inferred a time-calibrated species tree showing that the evolutionary history of this clade occurred entirely during the Pleistocene, with most of the divergences very recent. The climatic and geomorphological changes driving this divergence started during the Great Patagonian Glaciation, initially separating the two northwestern-most distributed species (L. pipanaco + L. pseudoanomalus) from the rest. Given the very recent evolutionary history of the group and their unique and conserved morphology, incongruent topologies among datasets are expected; a detailed genome-wide dataset will be needed to fully assess and resolve their speciation history. This paper describes a petrified trunk collected from a conglomerate bed of the Springhill Formation (Berriasian-Valanginian) in the Estancia El Álamo locality, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. The fossil trunk is classified within the ubiquitous genus Agathoxylon and the wood anatomy shows a close affinity to that of Araucariaceae. This Patagonian wood has a distinct combination of anatomical characteristics unique among all known species from the Jurassic and Cretaceous of Western Gondwana allowing to diagnose a new fossil taxon Agathoxylon mendezii sp. nov. Sedimentological and megafloristic proxies of the Springhill Formation suggest that Agathoxylon mendezii sp. nov. grew under a warm and wet climate, which indicates a subtropical to temperate palaeoenvironment. However, the large number of frost rings in the earlywood of this araucarian tree suggests that the palaeoenvironment at Estancia El Álamo was subjected to recurrent disturbances, most likely caused by regional continuous volcanic activity originating from volcanoes located far away to the west. This activity would have produced periodic stratospheric veils that promoted rapid decreases in surface air temperature; the wood response to such stressful conditions would have been the formation of numerous (at least five) frost rings. Although recurrent eruptions in Patagonia during the Early Cretaceous are well recorded, this study is the first to register eruptions recorded in a coniferous wood. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Well-preserved and diverse Early Cretaceous palynological assemblages were studied from an outcrop section of the Springhill Formation at the Río Correntoso locality (PRC), close to Ghío Lake, in Santa Cruz Province, Patagonia, Argentina. The studied log corresponds to the northernmost outcrops known for the Springhill Formation in the Austral Basin. Most of the palynomorphs algae (Botryococcus, Sphaeroplea, Lecaniella, Zygnema, Pseudoschizaea, Schizosporis, Ovoidites), and some angiosperm pollen grains (Proxapertites , Longapertites, Arecipites) are distinctive and characterize the palaeoenvironment and palaeoclimate of PRC, which was dominated by estuarine coastal margin sedimentites deposited under warm and humid conditions. These angiosperm pollen grains correspond to the earliest record of these group in Patagonia, represented by diverse monosulcates and one rare tricolpate type. This new record of angiosperm pollen in the Springhill Formation provides further evidence that one of the earliest diversifications of angiosperms started at least during the early Cretaceous in Patagonia. Introduction: In the present times, natural dyes become important for their safety, durability and environmental conservation. They give regional identity to any project of an artisanal nature where plants are used for dyeing. This paper studies the dyeing potential on merino wool fiber of native plants of the Patagonian steppe. M&M: The dyeing plant material collection area was limited to the southeast zone of Chubut, corresponding to the Floristic District of the Gulf San Jorge. The mother recipe was applied to obtain the dye and three types of procedures were developed: premordant, direct mordant and post-mordant, depending on the moment of application of the alum. Sodium bicarbonate and iron sulfate colour modifiers were used. Using the universal table of the Munsell (Color, 2009) system, the tone, lightness and saturation were studied. Results: 50 native species of the Patagonian Region were studied. In its totality the following proportion was obtained: brown 37%, yellow 35%, olive 14%, gray 10%, pink 2% and green 2%. 9 species of higher chromatic saturation stand out. The most saturated colours are obtained during the pre-mordent process. The best represented families are Fabaceae and Asteraceae. Conclusions: From the analysis of the literature on plants used for natural dyes in Argentina, it appears that numerous species studied in the present research have no antecedents and turn out to be promising, providing intense colours with high saturations. Introduction: In this study, the categories "paper reading", "screen reading" and "ways of reading" were analyzed through the words of teachers who belong to different disciplines and headquarters of the Universidad Nacional del Comahue (UNCo), Patagonia, Argentina. Method: For this study, part of a major investigation carried out within the framework of a doctoral thesis in Education, the constant comparative method was used, and qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with teachers, conducted during the 2014-2017 period, were analyzed. Objective: The main objective was to determine the representations of UNCo lectures regarding screen reading and their relationship with the task of teaching at university. Results: Concerning results, on the one hand, it was observed that the ratings on screen reading were different when the focus was shifted from the task of teaching to research. On the other hand, there were several changes in the ways of reading and teaching, although it was admitted that these do not always lead to profound transformations in education. Conclusion: The main conclusion was that, in certain situations, it seems that the so-called "new" technologies have demolished several walls, allowing for more extensive and open ways of teaching, but at the same time, it is noted that new walls have been erected, some of which only reproduce old pedagogical models. Objectives: Distinct diseases prevent endangered huemul deer (Hippocamelus bisulcus) recovery. Fundamental etiological factors include nutriments, a mayor component of habitat quality. Undernutrition affects growth, skeletal development, osteopathology, reproduction and immunocompetence: this paper amplifies data corroborating micro-nutrient deficiencies among huemul. Results: In Argentina, 57% huemul cadavers exhibited osteopathology, with new cases reported here. Recently, 86% live huemul had osteopathology: cranial lesions involved antemortem tooth loss, reducing feeding efficiency and body condition, with starvation deaths. This population had tissues well deficient compared to other cervids, averaging 0.28 ppm selenium, 4.98 ppm copper, whereas for manganese 55% were deficient (2.52 ppm) and 45% adequate (42.79 ppm). Recently, lesions in one Chilean huemul were interpreted to stem from parapoxvirus. That population also has cases with cranial osteopathologies, high disease susceptibility (parapoxvirus, parasitism, foot lesions), crippled antlers, and low density, indicative of marginal habitat and primary etiological factors like undernutrition and immunosuppression. The reported atypical symptoms attributed to parapoxvirus may relate to probable diagnostic limitations, but does support presence of nutritional deficiencies. Patagonia has selenium deficient plants and livestock, including severe muscular dystrophy, and soil levels in extant huemul areas considered very deficient. Moreover, 73% of Chilean huemul were selenium deficient and 64% severely deficient with concomitant cranial osteopathology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drylines have been identified as relevant synoptic-scale phenomena that frequently occur in several regions around the world. Despite previous works and the experience of local forecasters that recognizes the occurrence of drylines in Argentina and suggests its possible association with convection initiation, knowledge about the mechanisms leading to the genesis of these features is poor. This paper presents the first synoptic climatology of these drylines as well as a first approach to the understanding of the processes leading to their formation. The climatology is based on an automated algorithm for dryline identification applied to reanalysis data. We found that drylines are more frequent between the northern Patagonia plateau and the central Argentinean plains. A composite analysis is performed to analyze the processes leading to the formation of synoptic-scale drylines within this region. It was found that these drylines form in the confluence between a warm and moist air mass driven by a northwesterly flow and drier air flowing east over the northern Patagonia plateau. The dry air originates on top of the Pacific maritime boundary layer and experiences lee subsidence after crossing the Andes range creating an area of dry and warm air that is advected to the east by the westerly synoptic-scale flow, and transported downward during the day due to strong boundary layer turbulence. At the same time, surface heating over the plateau leads to substantial warming of the originally colder dry air behind the dryline, thus reversing the horizontal temperature gradient across the dryline. Factors affecting cetacean preservation and distribution in ancient sedimentary successions are not well understood. Actualistic studies have focused on coastal and deep marine examples, and little is known about taphonomic processes occurring within shelf environments. In this paper, we integrate sedimentological, taphonomic and palaeontological data for the cetacean-bearing lower Miocene Gaiman Formation from Patagonia, Argentina, to analyse which factors affected the distribution and preservation of cetaceans in several localities of the Southwestern Atlantic. Facies analysis shows that the formation represents a transgressive-regressive stratigraphic cycle, with palaeoenvironments including coastal, storm-dominated shoreface, inner shelf embayment and open inner shelf. Cetacean remains show preservation styles varying from isolated elements to articulated specimens, with nearly all remains restricted to both embayment and open marine inner shelf settings. Two fossil cetacean assemblages are recognized: Assemblage A comprises small-sized odontocetes dominated by Platanistoidea, preserved mostly in inner shelf embayment deposits; and Assemblage B comprises large-sized odontocetes and mysticetes, dominated by Physeteroidea and Balaenopteroidea, preserved mostly in open inner shelf deposits. Cetacean preservation style is controlled by a combination of palaeoenvironmental conditions, such as energy and sedimentation rate, and by biological factors, such as cetacean body plan and its impact on carcass buoyancy. Ecological factors may also explain the stratigraphic distribution of cetaceans between coastal and oceanic assemblages. In this paper, the analysis of a radiocarbon database of the North Coast of Santa Cruz (central Patagonia, Argentina), is presented. Dated archaeological samples were obtained from 56 different types of archaeological sites (open-air -residential sites and burials-, and also rock shelters). The objective of this paper is assessing the continuities and discontinuities in the chronological signal of the area and identifying tendencies along the Holocene. The database currently contains 75 radiocarbon dates falling between ca. 8000 and 300 BP. The radiocarbon data base provides information on the chronological, spatial and contextual variability of the archaeological record of North Coast of Santa Cruz. By means of different analysis of sum of probabilities, we present three different chronological moments of human use of the coast and intermediate zone can be identified. A first moment is represented by early evidence of settlement during Middle Holocene. A second moment corresponds to a hiatus between ca. 5800 and ca. 3900 BP without archaeological evidence. Finally, a third moment is where an increasing of chronological signal occurred, related to greater artifactual variability and an increase in the intensity of human settlement in the Patagonian region. The causes that could have influenced in the discontinuity of the chronological signal of the study area, and the characteristics of the different moments identified are discussed. Patagonia features the most extensive glaciers of the Southern Hemisphere, excluding Antarctica, and a vast inventory of glacial landforms, so it is thought to have played a key role in (paleo)glacier studies since the late 19th century. However, no systematic attempts to characterize the specific research trends and the scientific community focused on Patagonian cryosphere have been conducted so far. To fill this gap, we analyzed the metadata associated to 305 articles compiled from the Web of Science database following a bibliometric approach covering the period between 1976 and 2020. Our results point to an irregular but net increase on the number of contributions on Patagonian (paleo)glaciers. Mass balance analyses based on satellite data of present-day glaciers and the reconstruction of past glacier activity by dating glacial landforms formed during the Last Glacial Termination, were the most addressed topics during the analyzed period. Patagonian (paleo)glacier studies are mostly published in generic Earth Sciences publications, followed by Quaternary and glaciological journals. Most of the studies were led by scientists from the United Kingdom, followed by Chile, Argentina and United States. In terms of collaborations, these studies can be divided into two main clusters, one composed by researchers from United States, Chile and Argentina institutions, and another mostly composed by British researchers. So far, the most prolific authors are nearly equally distributed in nationality, yet gender inclusion and international collaborations are still caveats that must be solved. Permo-Triassic magmatism is widespread in the eastern North Patagonian Massif and has been related to the Gondwanide orogeny. Although a magmatic arc setting is widely accepted for the Permian plutonic rocks, the origin and geotectonic setting for the Triassic plutonic and volcanic rocks are still unknown. A NW-SE Triassic dyke swarm composed of andesites and latites with minor rhyolites was previously described in the Sierra Grande – Rincon de Paileman area. The dyke swarm was associated with extensional tectonics which was linked to a postorogenic process. In this paper we present new geochemical data of the rocks that form the swarm. Trachyandesites and rhyolites were separated based on their geochemical characteristics. Both groups may be considered originated from different sources. On the other hand, the content of incompatible elements (LILE and HFSE) indicates a strong relation between the swarm and an active continental margin. The samples also show a transitional signature between continental-arc and postcollisional or anorogenic settings. The new geochemical data on the dyke swarm support the idea of a magmatism that was linked to a postorogenic extensional tectonic regime related to a continental magmatic arc. The purpose of this paper is to begin to understand human mobility through rock transport at different times in two areas with different environmental characteristics: the Southern Deseado Massif and the basaltic canyons north of the Santa Cruz River. We focus on obsidian, which has a clear geochemical signature and an uneven distribution. Additionally, we use macroscopic information on siliceous rocks, which at present have only been identified in northern areas, although they may also be recovered randomly and in low frequencies in southern ones. During the initial peopling of the Southern Deseado Massif (ca. 10,800 BP), inhabitants were transporting black obsidian as well as translucent chalcedony, probably as part of the individual gear. During the Late Holocene, the number of obsidian artifacts decreased in the Southern Deseado Massif, related to a better knowledge of the high-quality local lithic resources and/or to the existence of higher population densities. Obsidian artifacts are more abundant in the northern Santa Cruz River basin than in the southern Deseado Massif, suggesting the existence of a relationship with areas located to the northwest, close to the obsidian source, as other lines of evidence suggest. In addition, the presence in the basaltic canyons of artifacts made from high-quality siliceous rocks, more abundant and predictable in northern areas, could also be the result of human movements following a north-south direction. Archaeological radiocarbon databases are being increasingly used as a proxy of past demographic trends. In this paper we compile and analyze an extensive database of paleoecological information and 14 C dates from archaeological sites in northwestern Patagonia (Argentina, South America). On this basis, we assess the regional distribution of human populations since the late Pleistocene, and their relation with the evolution of Patagonian climate and landscapes. We explore the spatial and temporal distribution of evidence and discuss sampling biases affecting the record in different ecological contexts. The analysis is set in the frame of three main ecological regions that have implications for human subsistence: Andean forest, grass steppe, and shrub steppe. The intensity of the archaeological signal differs among these regions through time, being stronger and more homogeneous in the grass steppe. In the Andean forest and the shrub steppe the signal is weaker and even absent during short periods of the middle Holocene. We suggest likely sampling biases contributing to these tendencies, since these three regions present variable research cover and intensity. On the other hand, we also suggest that these differences may reflect variations in the intensity of human occupation, in favor of more attractive environments for hunting (i.e., areas where guanaco are generally more abundant). This paper summarizes and discusses the main results achieved over three decades of research on paleodemographic aspects of Late Holocene hunter-gatherers in Northwestern Santa Cruz (Argentina). Research has been guided by a model of regional settlement that proposes that, as a result of the progressive aridization process recorded in Patagonia during the Late Holocene, human groups would have reduced their residential mobility and concentrated their settlements in low altitude basins with water availability, such as Lake Cardiel and Lake Salitroso. Paleodemographic questions derived from the model relate to population regional continuity and dynamics and were tested using several lines of research at regional and local scales. The assessment of the chronological information and temporal trends of the archaeological record at the regional level allowed for a coarse grain paleodemographic approach, and acted as a mean to support hypotheses related to changes in mobility and land use strategies. Building on this, several lines of bioarchaeological evidence were used to address paleodemographic aspects of the model, including temporal, distributional, and compositional studies of the mortuary record, isotopic, morphometric and DNA analyses and the sex and age structure of the skeletal samples recovered in Lake Salitroso basin. Results point to a biological and cultural population continuity in the region during the Late Holocene. In this paper we explore obsidian conveyance in the Diamante Valley, in northwestern Patagonia, Argentina. Obsidian is the third most-common toolstone used in the Diamante Valley after basalts and local cryptocrystallines. Obsidian artifacts are predominantly projectile points and bifaces, with few cores and early-stage reduction debris. To explain these patterns, we conducted XRF sourcing and technological analysis of 177 obsidian artifacts collected there. We also conducted a GIS-based least cost path analysis to assess the costs of conveying obsidian from sources to sites in the Diamante watershed. We found that hunter-gatherers used Las Cargas as the principal obsidian source, followed by Maule 1 and 2, El Peceño, and Coche Quemado. The nearest source, Laguna del Diamante, was the least used. These data, combined with an analysis of the ways cores, formed tools, and debitage types were conveyed and ultimately deposited at sites in the Diamante watershed, suggest a late Holocene pattern of highland-oriented indirect access, implying highland village sites likely served as nodes in a regional and extraregional exchange network focused not only on obsidian but also on other goods, information, and social obligations. • Dryline formation is favoured by the advection of mid-level dry air from the Pacific. • Local circulations impact the dryline movement and strength in quiescent conditions. • Nocturnal LLJ and local circulations reinforce the moisture gradient at night. • In synoptically active periods, dry advection and diurnal mixing are more important. Drylines are a frequent feature of the atmospheric circulation in Argentina. Recent work described their climatological characteristics and synoptic-scale processes associated with their formation. However, little is known about the mesoscale processes that are relevant for their life cycle. In this paper, we investigate the influence of these mechanisms on the formation and movement using a case-study approach. Also, the relationship between these mechanisms and convective initiation near the dryline is investigated. A typical northern Patagonia dryline is simulated using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) with an horizontal resolution of 3 km. The FLEXible PARTicle dispersion-WRF is also used to study some of the processes from a Lagrangian perspective. During the quiescent period corresponding to dryline formation and intensification, the dryline strengthens along the axis of a thermally-induced surface trough that promotes differential moisture advection. Also, convergence along the dryline is enhanced during night-time by the inertial oscillation ahead of the dryline and by the development of a thermally-driven circulation between the elevated terrain in northern Patagonia and the adjacent plains. These two mechanisms contribute to enhancing the intensity of the moisture gradient and to trigger deep moist convection. Under a period of stronger synoptic forcing, the dryline intensifies in response to the confluence induced by the deepening surface trough and moves away from the terrain elevations. Its movement during this period is driven by horizontal dry advection and the vertical mixing enhanced by the entrainment into the boundary layer of extremely dry air, whose origin can be traced back to the mid-levels over the Pacific Ocean. When the magnitude of the low-level westerly winds increase, moister air from lower levels cross the barrier, contributing to weakening the moisture gradient at the dryline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we present new palaeontological data regarding plant remains (palynomorphs, mesofossils, and leaves) from the uppermost part of the Lago Colhué Huapi Formation (Maastrichtian), at the headwaters of the Río Chico, Golfo San Jorge Basin. We also suggest a palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of these deposits, taking into account the information reported herein and previous palaeontological and sedimentological studies. Several spores of bryophytes, lycophytes, and monilophytes (ferns) as well as zygospores of Zygnemataceae form part of the freshwater aquatic ecosystem. The new species of Palmae affinity, Spinizonocolpites riochiquensis sp. nov. is described in this paper. Besides, we present the first record of leaf fragments with probable Palm-affinity in the Upper Cretaceous of Patagonia, which could reassert the presence of the Arecaceae in the basin. The western slope of Cerro Domuyo in northern Patagonia is characterized by thermal springs with boiling waters, Quaternary silicic domes, and pyroclastic deposits that suggest the existence of a geothermal reservoir. According to geochemical studies, the reservoir may have a temperature of 220 °C and one of the largest advective heat fluxes reported for a continental volcanic center. In this paper, we propose a more refined conceptual model for the Domuyo geothermal area, based on a geological survey supported by U Pb, U Th, and Ar Ar geochronology and by magnetotelluric and gravity surveys. Our study indicates that the Domuyo Volcanic Complex (DVC) is a Middle Pleistocene dome complex overlying middle Miocene to Pliocene volcanic sequences, which in turn cover: 1) the Jurassic-Early Cretaceous Neuquén marine sedimentary succession, 2) silicic ignimbrites dated at ~186.7 Ma, and 3) the Paleozoic metamorphic basement intruded by ~288 Ma granite bodies. The volcanic cycle in the DVC is distinctly bimodal, characterized by the emplacement of massive silicic domes and less voluminous olivine basalts on its southern slope. A major collapse of the central dome at ~600 ka produced a voluminous (19.4 km3 and 133 km2) block-and-ash flow, and associated pyroclastic flows, that filled a valley to the southwest at distances up to ~30 km from Cerro Domuyo summit. This was followed by a period of intense effusive activity that formed the Cerro Guitarra, Cerro Las Pampas, Cerro Domo, and Cerro Covunco silicic domes. The last two domes are the youngest and largest edifices, dated at 0.50 Ma (Ar Ar age) and 0.25 Ma (U Th age). Pre-Cenozoic successions were affected by N-S reverse and thrust faults that were later displaced by an ENE-WSW-trending transtensional belt. The basement rocks at the northern termination of the Cordillera del Viento anticlinorium were also displaced towards the east-northeast by this belt, which is observed NNW of Cerro Domuyo. The DVC was emplaced within this zone of crustal weakness. The integration of geologic observations with magnetotelluric and gravity data, allowed us to develop an updated conceptual model of the geothermal system. The geothermal reservoir is inferred at a depth of less than 2 km within pre-Pliocene fractured rocks, bounded by ~WSW-ENE trending faults and sealed by the pyroclastic deposits and rhyolitic lavas of the DVC. The location of most thermal springs is not directly controlled by faults. The South Atlantic coast in Argentine Patagonia is an area where semi-arid to arid conditions predominate and coastal populations present serious water supply problems. The aim of the work was to evaluate the factors that condition the salinization processes of coastal aquifers from a hydrochemical and isotopic analysis of the groundwater located in Pleistocene and Holocene littoral ridges in the northern sector of Patagonia in Bahía San Blas. A geomorphological characterization of the area was carried out using digital elevation models, satellite image interpretation and field surveys. Groundwater chemistry was analyzed in 40 shallow wells and 2 tidal water samples. At each point, electrical conductivity, temperature and pH of water were measured and samples were taken for analysis of major ions and stable isotopes. The salinization processes were analyzed by means of ionic and isotopic relationship graphs and were subsequently modeled using free software. The results obtained allowed the identification of the factors that determine the salinization of coastal aquifers. Particularly in the Pleistocene coastal ridges, the cementation of the most superficial sediments reduces permeability conditioning rainwater infiltration. This, together with the presence of soluble salts on the surface and the mixing with sea water, determines the salinization of the groundwater. In contrast to these, in the Holocene coastal ridges without cementation, rainwater infiltrates forming freshwater lenses where salinization processes occur only at the edges of the lenses where the saltwater wedge is located. The data provided in this paper are useful in prospecting freshwater sources along the arid coast of Patagonia where freshwater availability is scarce. The general trend of glacial retreat since the Little Ice Age has shown an acceleration during the last decades in Southern Argentine and Chilean Patagonia. The Fuegian Andes climatic records report an irregular mean annual temperature increase since 1970, with acceleration from 2015, and the Chato Glacier, as other regional cirque glaciers, has undergone a rapid ice front retreat. A detailed mapping of the proglacial area of the Chato Glacier allowed the identification of a landform assemblage related to the glacier retreat during the last decades. In this paper morphological and sedimentological features of this peculiar landform assemblage, generated in an intense glacial ablation environment, are described and the causes of their origin are discussed. Among the most remarkable landforms annual moraines, hummocky moraines, esker-like landforms, flutes, kettle ponds, dirt cones, glacifluvial deposits, pronival ramparts and collapsed moraines are found. The multitemporal analysis of the Chato Glacier retreat allowed us to interpret that most of these landforms were generated when the landscape became ice-free after 2005. The Chato Glacier cirque floor gentle slope, the thin-ice thickness and the occurrence of a rocky threshold near the glacier front would have promoted the rapid glacier thinning and the disconnection of dead ice. Simple Summary: Determining the impacts of human activities on natural populations is important for biodiversity conservation. In this paper, we study the past and more recent effects of urbanization and livestock activity on the genetic diversity and population structure of endemic guanaco populations of the arid Monte and Patagonian Steppe of central Argentina. Our results reveal that urbanization, the installation of fences, and the competition from sheep grazing coincided with the isolation of several guanaco populations, especially in areas with the highest intensity of livestock activity. However, our genetic analyses suggest that a more recent increase in connectivity among groups is occurring. Our results highlight the importance of implementing conservation management plans for natural populations in arid and human-intervened environments. Extensive livestock production and urbanization entail modifications of natural landscapes, including installation of fences, development of agriculture, urbanization of natural areas, and construction of roads and infrastructure that, together, impact native fauna. Here, we evaluate the diversity and genetic structure of endemic guanacos (Lama guanicoe) of the Monte and Patagonian Steppe of central Argentina, which have been reduced and displaced by sheep ranching and other impacts of human activities. Analyses of genetic variation of microsatellite loci and d-loop revealed high levels of genetic variation and latitudinal segregation of mitochondrial haplotypes. There were indications of at least two historical populations in the Monte and the Patagonian Steppe based on shared haplotypes and shared demographic history among localities. Currently, guanacos are structured into three groups that were probably reconnected relatively recently, possibly facilitated by a reduction of sheep and livestock in recent decades and a recovery of the guanaco populations. These results provide evidence of the genetic effects of livestock activity and urbanization on wild herbivore populations, which were possibly exacerbated by an arid environment with limited productive areas. Zooarchaeologists have relied upon various approaches to study the impacts of harvest pressure and environmental change on ungulate populations, such as analysis of prey mortality patterns and morphometrics. Analysis of ancient DNA from ungulate bones and bone fragments from archaeological sites provides an additional means for studying prey population dynamics related to environmental change and human ecology over time. In this paper, we study the population history of the largest game animal in northwest Patagonia, the guanaco (Lama guanicoe). Our study relies on the use of Bayesian Skyline Plots to determine shifts in estimated guanaco population size based on analysis of ancient mitochondrial DNA. Our results indicate that hunting by humans in addition to increases in aridity during the late Holocene led to a decline in the guanaco population in the region, which is in contrast to the harvest and environmental history in other parts of Patagonia (south of our study area). The provenance of sandstones deposited in the late Paleozoic Tepuel-Genoa Basin is analyzed in this paper. Five sections were sampled in Esquel, Sierra de Tepuel, Sierra de Tecka, El Molle, and Río Genoa areas for petrographic and geochemical studies. The sandstones in the Tepuel-Genoa Basin are dominated by feldspathic litharenites and litharenites, showing lithic fragments of volcanic and sedimentary rocks in the Valle Chico Formation and medium-to high-grade metamorphic rock clasts in the rest of the units. Detrital modes of seventy-five sandstones samples from the Valle Chico, Pampa de Tepuel, Mojón de Hierro, and Río Genoa formations were counted and analyzed. Seven modal components have discriminant value for identifying provenance areas (Qm, Qi, Lv, Lmm-h, Lm-Lp, Lm, Qpm). These modal components allow identification of three petrofacies: 1. Quartzose-lithic (Qm 69 Lv 2 Lm 29), 2. Quartzose (Qm 89 Lv 4 Lm 7) and 3. Volcanic-sedimentary (Qm 60 Lv 38 Lm 1). The quartzose-lithic petrofacies is mainly composed of monocrystalline quartz, medium- and high-grade metamorphic clasts and polycrystalline quartz with cataclastic texture, this assemblage is interpreted as being derived from the crystalline rocks that form the Deseado Massif. The quartzose petrofacies is composed of monocrystalline quartz with scarce contributions of metamorphic clasts and traces of volcanic fragments; the provenance area is ascribed to sedimentary terrains, which most likely covered part of the Deseado Massif. The volcanic-sedimentary petrofacies is comprised of volcanic (acidic and intermediate rocks) and sedimentary (sandstone and mudstone) clasts, with discrete amounts of quartz grains with idiomorph shapes and embayments. This assemblage may correspond to material supply from the Devonian-Early Carboniferous accretionary complex developed in Chile or the unroofing of the western volcanic arc located in the central part of Patagonia. The validity of the three defined petrofacies was evaluated using Principal Component Analysis and triangular compositional diagrams; both methods show good separation and lack of overlap between the three petrofacies. Major (Si, Al, Fe, Na, K) and trace-REE elements (Zr, Th, Sc, Hf) were used to improve the petrographic information. The relation SiO 2 against K 2 O/Na 2 O indicates that the Pampa de Tepuel and the Mojón de Hierro formations correspond to a passive margin, while the Valle Chico and Río Genoa formations represent different types of active continental margins. This paper analyzes the distribution patterns of pollen and spore assemblages in modern surface sediments recovered from the bottom of the San Jorge Gulf (SJG) and from offshore sites, in relation to the location of different phytogeographic provinces surrounding the SJG, including the distant forest from southwestern Patagonia. Results reveal that pollen spectra are dominated by Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthaceae, Poaceae, Asteraceae subf. Asteroideae, Colliguaja integerrima and Ephedra sp.; which represents the vegetation adjacent to the SJG. Overall, the pollen distribution in surface sediments reflects the location of the different phytogeographic provinces and will be used as modern-analogues to document vegetation history around the SJG. Pollen assemblages also reveal the latitudinal variation of vegetation taxa in the Patagonian steppe, which is characterized by a slight increase in herbaceous pollen and a decrease in high shrubs (e.g. Colliguaja integerrima) towards the southern-central part of the SJG. Furthermore, we identified two pollen taxa from the southwestern Patagonian forest, Nothofagus and Podocarpus that could be used as indicators of past dynamics and variations of the Southern Westerly Wind Belt (SWWB) in the SJG during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene. High pollen concentrations are recorded at the central part of the SJG (480–8080 grains/g), while low concentrations are measured in the northern and southern parts of the Gulf, as well as at offshore sites (26–1806 grains/g). Marine sedimentary rocks of the lower Miocene Monte León Formation of southeastern Patagonia (Austral Basin), Argentina are important geological archives for better understanding regional tectonics, paleoenvironments, oceanography, and climate. In this paper, we describe assemblages of invertebrates, palynomorphs, foraminifera, ostracods and calcareous nannofossils in a stratigraphical and sedimentological framework, which suggest deposition during a transgressive-regressive cycle. From base to top, the lowermost outcropping deposits of the Punta Entrada Member represent an inner shelf environment, formed during a transgressive phase. The zone of maximum flooding is marked by a high diversity of protoperidiniaceans (heterotrophic) and offshore dinoflagellate cysts, an increase in the percentage and size of planktonic foraminifera, and a decrease in shallow water benthic foraminifera. Regressive deposits in the upper part of the Punta Entrada Member exhibit a progradational stratal stacking pattern and are characterized by an upward decrease in bioturbation and in the content of marine invertebrates; the dinoflagellate cyst assemblages point toward shallower and more restricted marine conditions than in underlying deposits. The cycle ends with the Monte Observación Member, which contains an impoverished and mostly reworked fauna of invertebrates. The presence of monospecific reefs of Crassostrea orbignyi , the decrease in dinoflagellate cysts and calcareous microfossils diversity, and the increase of continental palynomorphs suggest progressively shallower conditions and increasing influence of freshwater discharge. Although eustatic controls could have contributed to the sedimentary evolution of the Monte León Formation, the upward regressive trend is interpreted as the result of tectonism linked to the Andean orogeny, which led to the uplift, exhumation, and erosion of the highlands in the west. This is supported by the abundance of pyroclastic material, together with reworked specimens of Upper Cretaceous forams and Upper Cretaceous and middle Eocene dinoflagellate cysts in the upper part of the Punta Entrada Member and in the Monte Observación Member. • Multiproxy data indicate that study rocks represent a transgressive-regressive cycle. • A maximum flooding and/or higher organic flux zone was identified at the coastal cliffs. • The regressive trend was the result of tectonics, sediment supply dynamics, and volcanism. • Cretaceous/Eocene forams and dinocysts evidence exhumation and reworking from the Andes. Large carbonate microbialite build-ups are relatively uncommon in ancient fresh-water lacustrine basins as compared with those marine and saline environments. This paper discusses the formation of a large continental lacustrine deposit, the Oligocene-Miocene Carinao Formation in Argentina, which contains large bioherms. The lacustrine formation occurs in N-S corridor and is mostly composed by meter scale pinnacles and sheet-like carbonate beds that grade to detrital deposits towards the more subsident southern areas. The main facies are autochthonous and allochthonous limestones and detrital deposits. The autochthonous limestones include the carbonate pinnacles, which are about 4 m high and 0.5 m in diameter and coalesce laterally to form very continuous beds (several kms). The pinnacles are formed by plate-like, dome, vertically elongated and irregular horizontal bioherms, most of them with radial structure. The bioherms are boundstones of fibrous (fans and spherulites) and feather calcite crystals, micrite and inequigranular calcite mosaics. Both biogenic and abiogenic processes interfered in carbonate precipitation. Allochthonous limestones include peloidal, ostracod and intraclastic limestones, some containing coated grains. Polymictic conglomerates and cross-bedded hybrid arenites deposited in a fluvial-deltaic system located at the southwest of the basin. δ13C values vary between −0.4 and −3.2‰ VPDB and δ18O are comprised between −5.7 and −8.6‰ VPDB. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios range between 0.7061 and 0.7056. The Carinao Formation deposited in a fresh-water lake, sourced by meteoric and deep-groundwater. Tectonics was a main control determining the configuration of the lake system, the water supply and the alignment of some bioherms. The lower Miocene Santa Cruz Formation (dated to ~18–16 Ma) of Southern Patagonia, Argentina, preserves rich vertebrate faunas, which are representative of communities that existed prior to the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI). Some previous researchers have hypothesized that these pre-GABI faunas had a low richness of mammalian carnivores (an impoverished predator guild), while others argue for a predator/prey ratio similar to those of recent communities. In this paper, we analyze faunas from the lower part of the Santa Cruz Formation (FL 1–7) using a methodology that allows us to quantify (i) the meat resources that were available to the secondary consumers of the palaeocommunity; and (ii) the competition intensity for these resources. In our modeling, we considered different scenarios related to meat consumption, including the possibility that several taxa had a scavenging behavior, and also differences in mortality rates between young and adult prey. Our results provide estimates of the nutritional requirements from the predator/scavenger guild under maximum and minimum quantities of meat offered by the prey community, which indicate the presence of a well-balanced palaeocommunity. Moreover, the competition indices point to a relatively high level of competition for prey of small-to-medium size, although competition for resources from large mammal prey was rather low. The Paleogene infill of the eastern Golfo San Jorge Basin, Patagonia, Argentina, is composed of marine (Salamanca Formation) and terrestrial (Grupo Río Chico and lower Sarmiento Formation) deposits. The Río Chico Group is a fluvial, pedogenically modified succession interlayered with eolian volcaniclastic deposits during the Eocene. Several authors have highlighted the stratigraphic significance and usefulness of strongly developed paleosols in the definition of sequence stratigraphic studies. Even though the area hosts abundant geological and paleopedological data, no large-scale (i.e., basin-scale) stratigraphic architectural correlation including paleosols and relationships within the sequence stratigraphic context had hitherto been carried out. By integrating previously published and unpublished data sets, this paper proposes a sequence stratigraphic framework for the middle Danian–middle Eocene successions of the eastern Golfo San Jorge Basin. Here, spatio-temporal changes in fluvial/alluvial architecture of the Paleogene infill allow us to define four depositional sequences (S), limited by sequence boundaries (SB) that internally presents a low-accommodation system tract (LAST), and a high-accommodation system tract (HAST). Part of these sequences occur as fining-upwards fluvial successions that are pedogenically modified on top by strongly developed paleosols, or are erosively overlain by the coarse-grained base of the following sequence without the development of well-developed paleosols. The sedimentological and paleopedological analysis of the four sequences identified for the early Paleogene infill of the basin indicates that the interplay between subsidence, base level, and climate controlled both fluvial style and landscape evolution, as well as soil development. In this paper, we present an updated revision of fossil vertebrates from the Chubut Group, Golfo San Jorge Basin, while also describing some new remains. Extensive exposures of both Lower and Upper Cretaceous sedimentary sequences are present in central Patagonia. These outcrops have, over the past several decades, yielded a varied vertebrate fauna, including fishes, turtles, crocodyliforms, pterosaurs, and dinosaurs, currently herein characterized and described. Although vertebrate diversity in the Chubut Group in central Patagonia is remarkable, the most abundant vertebrates recovered are dinosaurs. The Matasiete Formation (Hauterivian?–Albian) is markedly less prolific in terms of fossils discoveries than either the Bajo Barreal Formation (Cenomanian–early Turonian) or the recently recognized Lago Colhué Huapi Formation (Coniacian–Maastrichtian). The Bajo Barreal fauna is, at a high level, typical of coeval Gondwanan faunas. However, interestingly, several taxa occupy a basal position within their respective groups. The Lago Colhué Huapi Formation has produced a more derived vertebrate fauna, again similar to those from other Gondwanan regions. Finally, in a broad context, the new materials described augment our understanding of Cretaceous terrestrial vertebrate assemblage of central Patagonia and add to the generally meager record of vertebrate in the Cretaceous of the Southern Hemisphere. • South-central Patagonia preserves a rich and important vertebrate fossil record. • New materials described augment our understanding of Cretaceous vertebrate. • The information mentioned constitutes an important source for future comparisons. Hydrothermal eruptions are explosive events driven by the sudden and violent vaporization of the water present in many hot water geothermal fields worldwide. Over recent years, thermodynamical conditions of fluids and petrophisical-geomechanical features of host-rocks were mentioned as responsible of the wide range of eruptive styles and deposits of hydrothermal eruptions. Nevertheless, geological and historical records show that PDC and fallout processes are underestimated as common processes linked to hydrothermal eruptions. This paper analyzes from a multi-disciplinary approach —virtual outcrops modeling, sedimentology, petrographic and XDR studies, facies modeling, eye-witness source analysis, and stratigraphy— the pristine Holocene–historic hydrothermal eruptive record of El Humazo manifestation (Domuyo Geothermal Field, Patagonia, Argentina). Different eruptive scenarios are characterized by ballistic ejection, PDC and/or fallout mechanisms with discernible tefra-composition and granulometry, associated with both excavational and/or aggradational landforms. We show how diverse eruptive dynamics are controlled by pre-eruptive internal and external factors, such as reservoir energy, depth of the explosion/fragmentation levels, physical properties and structural anisotropy of the host-rocks and eruptive center migrations. We consider that this case study may be useful not only for the application in the assessment of the volcanic hazard associated with the Domuyo geothermal field, but also contributes to the knowledge of the eruptive dynamics in other geothermal systems with similar characteristics. • Hydrothermal eruptions show simple or compound mechanisms of transport–deposition. • Energy, fragmentation level, host-rock property control the hydrothermal eruptions. • Host-rock type influences the tephra granolumetry and eruptive dynamics. Species in the genus Notocotylus (Trematoda, Notocotylidae) are cosmopolitan parasites of mainly aquatic birds and, to a lesser extent, mammals. In this paper we describe Notocotylus primulus n. sp. parasitizing the Crested Duck, Lophonetta specularioides , from the Patagonian coast, southwestern Atlantic Ocean, based on morphological and molecular data. The new species could be distinguished from its congeners by the combination of several features; among them, the position of the genital pore that is prebifurcal and located close to the posterior margin of the oral sucker, a greater number of both ventral papillae and uterine loops, and a large cirrus sac. Molecular results of the ITS2 sequence support the location of this new species in the genus Notocotylus due to a close relationship with Notocotylus malhamensis (the lower genetic distance of the ITS2 sequences). This paper describes an integrated field, petrographic and geochemical study of the Puesto del Museo Formation, a poorly known unit that evidences a Cenozoic transgression at the southernmost Golfo San Jorge Basin. The most striking features of the Puesto del Museo Formation is its occurrence as restricted ~20 m-thick-outcrops composed exclusively of friable cross-stratified grainstones. We analyzed the sedimentary facies and facies associations in order to reconstruct the depositional setting. The petrographic characterization allows assessing the composition as a very homogeneous lithological succession dominated by skeletal grainstones. Geochemistry of trace elements (Mn, Sr, Rb, rare earth elements plus yttrium = REY), and stable isotopes (C and O) were used to characterize the grainstones compositionally, and to constrain environmental and climate conditions that controlled its deposition. The diagenetic environmental comprehension helped to the interpretations of the syn- and post-depositional conditions related to the grainstones. Finally, the stratigraphic position of the Puesto del Museo grainstones into the context of the basin is discussed. This succession can be correlated with the Patagonian marine event (i.e., Golfo San Jorge and Austral basins) that took place during the late Oligocene–early Miocene, related to an elevated global sea level controlled by glacio-eustatic conditions. • Puesto del Museo Fm can represent the southernmost mid-Cenozoic carbonates at the GSJB. • These grainstones deposits flooded a rocky shore composed of the Jurassic volcanites. • The cementation begun at the seafloor followed by vadose conditions. • Trace elements supported by facies analysis reveal shallow open marine environment. • Bioclasts and C-isotope may suggest it as part of the Patagoniense transgression. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the usefulness of TanDEM-X DEM (digital elevation model) for remote geomorphological analysis in Argentinian Patagonia. The use of a DEM with appropriate resolution and coverage might be very helpful and advantageous in vast and hardly accessible areas. TanDEM-X DEM could represent an unprecedented opportunity to identify geomorphological features because of its global coverage, ~12 m spatial resolution and low cost. In this regard, we assessed the vertical accuracy of TanDEM-X DEM through comparison with Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) datasets collected in two areas of the Patagonia Region during a field survey; we then investigated different types of landforms by creating the elevation profiles. The comparison indicates a high agreement between TanDEM-X DEM and reference values, with a mean absolute vertical error (MAE) of 0.53 m, and a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.73 m. The results of landform analysis show an appropriate spatial resolution to detect different features such as beach ridges, which are impossible to delineate with other lower resolution DEMs. For these reasons, TanDEM-X DEM constitutes a useful tool for detailed geomorphological analyses in Argentinian Patagonia.
