OBJECTIVE To describe the use of a novel wound dressing that delivers nitric oxide (NO) to naturally occurring traumatic wounds in dogs. ANIMALS 24 client-owned dogs with 30 wounds. METHODS Dogs were presented with acute traumatic wounds requiring open wound management. Wounds were bandaged with a novel NO wound dressing and reassessed as needed for continued open wound management until wounds healed by second intention or wound closure was recommended. Dogs could be removed from the study at any point at the clinician’s discretion. RESULTS All wounds had the novel NO wound dressing used during open wound management until wound closure was recommended. Median time to wound closure was 6 days (range, 2 to 42). There were no complications directly attributed to the use of the novel wound dressing that clinically affected the dogs. Three wounds dehisced following wound closure. Wound healing was confirmed in 19 dogs with 25 wounds, with 3 dogs lost to follow-up prior to suture removal. Only 7.1% of wounds had clinical signs consistent with wound infection following wound closure. Summary: Recognition of the role that biofilms play in the persistence of wounds and lack of response to therapy in horses is increasing. Prevention of biofilm development in the early stages of wound care involves three primary strategies: wound debridement and cleansing to reduce bacterial counts in the wound bed, appropriate use of advanced wound dressings and implementation of topical antimicrobial agents. Once formed, eradication of biofilms requires elimination to improve the wound environment for contraction and epithelialisation while not further harming the native cells integral to the healing process, which is achieved predominantly through repeated lavage and debridement combined with topical antimicrobial therapy. Pseudomonas, Enterococcus and Staphylococcus bacterial species have been most commonly identified in equine wounds with delayed healing. This review will establish why and how biofilms form, how to recognise clinical indications that biofilms have formed in equine wounds and review current diagnostic options and biofilm‐based wound care strategies to eradicate biofilms. Clinical scenarios for cases in which biofilms developed and were successfully treated will be presented. Background: Wounds inflict pain and affect human health causing high expenditure on treatment and management. Herbal crude extracts are used in traditional medicine as a treatment for wounds and other illnesses. However, the progress in the use of plants has been deterred due to their poor solubility and poor bioavailability requiring administration at high doses. It has been established that nanoencapsulation of herbal products in nanocarriers (size 1 nm to 100 nm) such as nanofibers, nanoparticles, nanospheres, and nanoliposomes greatly improves their efficacy. Due to their small and large surface area, nanocarriers are more biologically active, improve bioavailability, protect the drug from deterioration, and release it to the targeted site in a sustainable manner. Aim: The review aims to collate and appraise evidence on the efficacy of nano encapsulated herbal extracts in the treatment of induced wounds in animal models. Methods: The review will be protocol-driven and conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis for Protocols (PRISMA-P) and protocol guidelines for systematic review and meta-analysis for animal intervention studies. The final review will be conducted and reported with reference to PRISMA 2020 statement. Studies will be searched in Pub Med, ProQuest, Web of Science, Medline Ovid, EMBASE, and Google Scholar. The PRISMA flow criteria will be followed in screening the articles for inclusion. Data extraction form will be designed in Excel spreadsheet 2013 and data extracted based on the primary and secondary outcomes. Risk of bias assessment will be done using SYRCLE's risk of bias tool for animal studies. Data analysis will be done using narrative and quantitative synthesis. Expected results: We hope to make meaningful comparisons between the effectiveness of the herb-loaded nanomaterials and other interventions (controls) in the selected studies, based on the primary and secondary outcome measures. We expect that these findings to inform clinical practice on whether preclinical studies show enough quality evidence on the efficacy and safety of herbal-loaded nanomaterials that can be translated into clinical trials and further research. Wounds are the loss or destruction of part of the body's tissue, if the wound is not treated it will lead to infection and may interfere with livestock production. The faster the healing process occurs, the less likely secondary infections are to develop and become more severe. Clinically, various treatments and medicines, mainly those of chemical origin, have been introduced to facilitate and accelerate the wound healing process, but their use is limited due to side effects or low efficiency. Some substances and active substances are used to accelerate the process, but in this case herbal or medicinal plants can be used as an alternative in treating wounds in livestock, these plants have long been used as herbal medicines for humans and livestock. Moringa leaves contain phytochemicals that have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities that can help the wound healing process. Compounds in Moringa leaves that play a role in wound healing include flavonoids, saponins, tannins, antibacterial, antiseptic, antimicrobial, and polyphenolic compounds. This review discusses and explains Moringa leaves on their medicinal function in livestock. Wound healing is the most important property for organisms and is the process of cell recovery because poor wound healing can cause physical pain, discomfort, and also bring a series of psychological problems to livestock. At present, the development trend of dressing materials is being multifunctional for convenient and long-term nursing care process of some complicated wounds. Here, basing on the theory of wound moist healing, an injectable and self-healing hydrogel comprising of collagen (COL), chitosan (CS) and oxidation modified Konjac glucomannan (OKGM), which acts as a macromolecular cross-linker to construct dynamic Schiff-base bonds was smartly designed. The strategy of introducing the silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) into the COL–CS–OKGM hydrogel matrix achieved a markedly enhanced antibacterial activity derived from the synergistical effect between the Ag+ and the mild photothermal efficacy of Ag NPs, which also improved the local capillary blood circulation of the wound area to further facilitate wound healing process. The excellent syringeability and self-healing behaviors endowed the COL–CS–OKGM–Ag hydrogel with self-adapting ability for the wounds with irregular and large area needing frequent applying and changing without secondary injuries. In vitro and in vivo evaluations verified that so-designed COL–CS–OKGM–Ag hydrogel also with hemostatic performance is a promising multifunctional dressing for the treatments of infected wound with not only good biocompatibility and convenient use, but also with desired regenerative healing prognoses benefited from hydrogel moist environment and physiotherapy. Objective: To compare the effectiveness of antiseptic solutions to that of non-antiseptic solutions in reducing wound infection rate, reducing bacterial load and improving wound healing. Method: We searched PubMed MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), ProQuest Medical Database and medRxiv for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing antiseptic solutions with non-antiseptic solutions in simple, uncomplicated acute traumatic wounds. Qualitative data synthesis was employed. Risk of bias was assessed and GRADE assessment was used to evaluate quality of evidence. Results: In this systematic review, four studies with a total of 875 participants were included, of which two studies showed a significant reduction of wound infection rate using povidone-iodine (p=0.001 and p=0.03). The use of non-antiseptic solutions significantly increased bacterial load on acute traumatic wounds (p=0.0001). The quality of evidence was very low. No studies reported on wound healing outcome. Conclusion: No robust conclusions can be implemented in clinical practice. Future studies are needed to compare the use of antiseptic and non-antiseptic solutions in acute traumatic wounds. The treatment and care of human wounds represent an enormous burden on the medical system and patients alike. Chronic or delayed healing wounds are characterized by the inability to form proper granulation tissue, followed by deficiencies in keratinocyte migration and wound re-epithelialization, leading to increased likelihood of infection and poor wound outcomes. Human reticular acellular dermal matrix (HR-ADM) is one type of tissue graft developed to enhance closure of delayed healing wounds that has demonstrated clinical utility through accelerating closure of lower extremity diabetic ulcers, but the mechanisms underlying this clinical success are not well understood. The authors utilized a diabetic murine splinted excisional wound model to investigate the effects of HR-ADM application on wound closure. The authors demonstrate that application of HR-ADM served as a dermal scaffold and promoted rapid re-epithelialization and keratinocyte proliferation, resulting in accelerated wound closure while minimizing granulation tissue formation. HR-ADM-applied wounds also demonstrated evidence of cellular infiltration, neovascularization and collagen remodeling by the host organism. These data suggest that HR-ADM supports epidermal closure in delayed healing wounds and remodeling of the matrix into host tissue, lending further support to the clinical success of HR-ADM described in clinical reports. Most acute wounds will heal with good topical care. However, some wounds, especially chronic ones occurring in impaired hosts, are more problematic. Objective: Evaluate the effect of topical 1% cannabidiol on second intention wound healing in distal limb wounds of horses. Design: Experimental. Animals: Six Standardbred horses. Methods: A total of five 2.5 cm × 2.5 cm full thickness skin wounds were created on the dorsomedial aspect of the metacarpi of 6 horses. Wounds were contaminated with faeces on the day of wound creation. Each wound was then assigned to a treatment group; compounded 1% cannabidiol in unique manuka factor (UMF) 5 manuka honey, UMF 5 manuka honey, UMF 20 manuka honey or saline. Each treatment was applied topically daily for a total of 42 days. Legs were bandaged and bandages were changed, daily, for 13 days postoperatively. Digital photographs of each wound were taken on day 1 then weekly for 6 weeks. Wound size, daily healing rate and total time to healing were recorded and compared statistically. Results: Irrespective of the treatment, wounds did not retract as expected in the first 7 days after wound creation. There was no difference in wound area, daily healing rate, days to complete healing between treatment groups. Conclusions: This preliminary study failed to demonstrate any difference in wound healing variables between treatment groups in this model of second intention wound healing. This was unexpected due to the established effects of UMF 20 manuka honey on wound healing using the same model. This may be due to systemic effects of cannabidiol and study design. Objective: Impaired wound healing can lead to hard-to-heal wounds, which impact on patients, clinicians and healthcare systems. Negative pressure wound therapy with instillation and dwell time (NPWTi-d) was developed to manage wounds through early-stage cleansing. This study describes the use of NPWTi-d to help manage hard-to-heal wounds in patients with risk factors for impaired wound healing. Method: In this case series, patients were treated between October 2015 and March 2018 at a community hospital in western France. Normal saline solution was instilled into wounds with a dwell time of 10 minutes, followed by the application of negative pressure at −75 mmHg to −125 mmHg for 2–3 hours. If needed, patients were given appropriate oral or intravenous antibiotic treatment in conjunction with NPWTi-d and subsequent wound therapies. Results: A total of 15 patients participated in the study. Mean age was 81±13 years, and 12 (80%) patients were malnourished with blood albumin levels of 30.1±5.7g/l, and 12 (80%) patients were given antibiotic therapy. The mean duration of NPWTi-d was 19.4±20.8 days, with a mean number of dressing changes of 6.6±6.8; the duration of NPWTi-d and the number of dressing changes for pressure ulcers was three times that of the other wound types. The mean cost of NPWTi-d in this study was €1643.40±€1709.13. Overall, NPWTi-d provided early-stage wound cleansing and helped achieve adequate granulation tissue formation and progression to the next phase of wound healing. Conclusion: In these cases, NPWTi-d was a beneficial and effective method of treating hard-to-heal wounds that were resistant to traditional treatments, yielding favourable clinical outcomes. Despite the generous blood supply, and resultant healing capacity within the head and neck, complex wounds in this area may be extremely debilitating and present an obstacle to treatment for the reconstructive surgeon. Delayed, incomplete, or otherwise suboptimal wound healing within this anatomical region may lead to both functional and aesthetically displeasing outcomes, resulting in impaired speech or swallowing, social stigma, and, in severe cases, exposure of critical underlying structures. Due to implications, with regard to wound formation following surgical intervention, the facial reconstructive surgeon, in particular, must be familiar with the multitude of treatment modalities available. This article serves as a review of the underlying pathophysiology of wound healing, local and systemic processes that may influence the healing process, and treatments that facilitate tissue restoration while mitigating future complications. Every year millions of lacerations and incisions taken place and require an effective methodology to manage the wound for a better life. The primary causes include mechanical trauma and surgical procedures. The rapid healing of the wound is critical to prevent further infection and reduction pain etc. Current options comprise of sutures, staplers, surgical strips and glues, again the intervention depends on the type of wound and the surgeon preference. The current wound closure techniques pose various potent limitations and confronting the problems to create a desired wound closure technique is necessary for faster and effective wound healing management. The surgical staplers are fast and easy to use wound closure devices, which approximates the edges of the wounds together by staples. The staples are mostly made up of metals like titanium and stainless steel. By modifying the existing stapling method using biodegradable staples that are expected to have good mechanical properties, not require removal procedure, minimized scarring and an overall acceleration in wound healing with minimal complications. Summary: Introduction: Skin rejuvenation procedures have become common with sophisticated technologies with reduced downtime and related risks. Recently, microneedling has been paired with radiofrequency to create Fractional Radiofrequency Microneedling (FRFM) to induce neocollagenesis. Frequently, topical products are applied immediately after the needling. This procedure is known as percutaneous collagen induction therapy (PCIT). Postoperative topical wound care is critical for prompt rapid and safe healing, with moist wound healing deemed of primary importance for fast and correct scarring process. An ideal dressing enables a moist environment while reducing postprocedural inflammatory responses in the first stages of wound healing. Objective: To evaluate whether an innovative silicone‐based wound dressing is superior than standard of care therapy in decreasing severity and duration of treatment‐site acute inflammatory reactions post PCIT. Materials and Methods: Endymed PRO Intensif Handpiece (Endymed, Israel) was used for the full‐face FRFM procedure. Subjects (n = 20) applied treatment (Stratacel®—Stratpharma SG, Switzerland) and control (Aquaphor®—Beiersdorf Inc, USA) immediately after the procedure and daily; they were evaluated immediately postprocedure (baseline assessment), at 2, 3 and 7 days postprocedure. Digital and 3D pictures (Antera 3D Camera for Skin Analysis—Miravex, Ireland) were taken at each assessment. Results: All patients healed properly without reporting adverse reactions to any of the studied products. Erythema at each study visit was significantly reduced with the use of the novel wound dressing (P < 0.001). A statistically significant difference in favor of the innovative wound dressing also emerged with respect to the patient‐rated product properties (P = 0.008), such as feel on skin, drying time and stickiness. Conclusions: The novel wound dressing reduced signs of acute inflammation following PCIT when compared to standard of care, without reporting adverse events and resulting in a more favorable outcome from a patient perspective. This article examines the treatment of facial wounds in early modern Britain through a close study of the casebook of St Bartholomew's Hospital surgeon Joseph Binns (d. 1664). It explores surgeons' and related practitioners' special attention to the care and infliction of facial wounds and scarring in their practice, including impairments to facial movement and expression, the use of specific suturing techniques and the reduced use of stitches, and the development of agglutinative medicaments. The face was recognised as a site of immense vulnerability and exposure, requiring particular care, and this vulnerability was mirrored in the capacity for facial scarring to detrimentally advertise a practitioner's skill. This essay reads Binns' unpublished notes against the cases and theoretical ideals set out in published texts from surgeons such as the Scottish Alexander Read, the East India Company surgeon John Woodall, and the London surgeon and physician Daniel Turner. I argue that both the textbooks and Binns' practice demonstrate awareness of the special role of the face in the early modern period, and that this guided the medical approach to disfiguring injuries and conditions. Aim: Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) devices demonstrated their importance in wound healing process. Our clinical study evaluates the role of NPWT in skin grafts healing, both in acute and chronic wounds. Method: We used NPWT for acute and chronic soft tissue defects therapy (56 cases), before and after reconstruction with skin grafts. We compared the evolution of two groups of patients, with similar wounds, admitted and treated during a 7-year period (2016-2022). For 25 patients we used NPWT only before reconstruction with skin grafts (15 acute, 10 chronic wounds), and for the other 31 patients we used NPWT before and after skin grafting (14 acute, 17 chronic). Results / Discussion: Before local reconstruction, NPWT stimulated wound debridement (16 patients with burn injuries, 8 patients with deep posttraumatic soft tissue defects) or granular tissue development (9 patients with trophic ulcers on the leg, 13 patients with diabetic foot, 5 patients with pressure sores, 5 patients with defects after tumor excision). Immediately after the reconstruction, NPWT offered the best conditions for wound healing by reducing local edema, maintaining graft adhesion to the wound bed, stimulating new vessels to grow and nourish the skin graft. Skin tears are frequently encountered in emergency and unscheduled care, and are prevalent in older people. Patients may present soon after an acute skin tear, or at a later stage when the wound presentation is different and there are complications. This article describes evidence-based recommendations and strategies for the prevention, assessment and management of skin tears, discusses risk factors and explains when to refer patients for specialist management. Objective: To estimate the patterns of care and related resource use attributable to managing acute and chronic wounds among a catchment population of a typical clinical commissioning group (CCG)/ health board and corresponding National Health Service (NHS) costs in the UK. Method: This was a sub-analysis of a retrospective cohort analysis of the records of 2000 patients in The Health Improvement Network (THIN) database. Patients' characteristics, wound-related health outcomes and health-care resource use were quantified for an average CCG/health board with a catchment population of 250,000 adults ≥18 years of age, and the corresponding NHS cost of patient management was estimated at 2013/2014 prices. Results: An average CCG/health board was estimated to be managing 11,200 wounds in 2012/2013. Of these, 40% were considered to be acute wounds, 48% chronic and 12% lacking any specific diagnosis. The prevalence of acute, chronic and unspecified wounds was estimated to be growing at the rate of 9%, 12% and 13% per annum respectively. Our analysis indicated that the current rate of wound healing must increase by an average of at least 1% per annum across all wound types in order to slow down the increasing prevalence. Otherwise, an average CCG/health board is predicted to manage ~23,200 wounds per annum by 2019/2020 and is predicted to spend a discounted (the process of determining the present value of a payment that is to be received in the future) £50 million on managing these wounds and associated comorbidities. Conclusion: Real-world evidence highlights the substantial burden that acute and chronic wounds impose on an average CCG/health board. Strategies are required to improve the accuracy of diagnosis and healing rates. Chronic wounds are a common and debilitating complication for the diabetic population. It is challenging to study the development of chronic wounds in human patients; by the time it is clear that a wound is chronic, the early phases of wound healing have passed and can no longer be studied. Because of this limitation, mouse models have been employed to better understand the early phases of chronic wound formation. In the past few years, a series of reports have highlighted the importance of reactive oxygen species and bacterial biofilms in the development of chronic wounds in diabetics. We review these recent findings and discuss mouse models that are being utilized to enhance our understanding of these potentially important contributors to chronic wound formation in diabetic patients. The aim of this commentary is to discuss potential clinical implications of introducing resilience-building interventions into care for veterans who are living with a war wound. Some war veterans are expected to live with a wound upon discharge from an active military role and also to fit into civilian life. These lifestyle adjustments can tax the person's coping abilities and in that context may hinder successful adaptation. The experience of living with a wound or wounds, either acute or chronic, is connected to losses, including loss of mobility, loss of financial capacity (unable to work at times) and losses attached to changed social roles. Psychological stress is also a common experience for veterans returning to civilian life. Psychological stress is associated with impaired wound healing. Modern health practice is centred on symptom reduction and working with pathology, however, working with people's adaptive behaviours such as resilience has not been considered. Using the resilience model as a conceptual framework health-care professionals can engage with veterans towards resilience within the context of their personal experience of ill health. Using this contemporary framework for considering these aspects of care has the potential to facilitate resistance to stressors associated with being injured, possibly preventing quality-of-life impairments. Wound healing involves a complex cascade of cellular, molecular, and biochemical responses and signaling processes. It consists of successive interrelated phases, the duration of which depends on a multitude of factors. Wound treatment is a major healthcare issue that can be resolved by the development of effective and affordable wound dressings based on natural materials and biologically active substances. The proper use of modern wound dressings can significantly accelerate wound healing with minimum scar mark. Sulfated polysaccharides from seaweeds, with their unique structures and biological properties, as well as with a high potential to be used in various wound treatment methods, now undoubtedly play a major role in innovative biotechnologies of modern natural interactive dressings. These natural biopolymers are a novel and promising biologically active source for designing wound dressings based on alginates, fucoidans, carrageenans, and ulvans, which serve as active and effective therapeutic tools. The goal of this review is to summarize available information about the modern wound dressing technologies based on seaweed-derived polysaccharides, including those successfully implemented in commercial products, with a focus on promising and innovative designs. Future perspectives for the use of marine-derived biopolymers necessitate summarizing and analyzing results of numerous experiments and clinical trial data, developing a scientifically substantiated approach to wound treatment, and suggesting relevant practical recommendations. Objective To report the design and benefits of a rigid polyethylene cover 'shell' for the protection of dorsal torso wounds and tube fixation in pigs. Methods Open C-shaped polyethylene shells were designed to protect wounds and dressings on the dorsum of pigs used in research into negative pressure dressing-assisted wound healing. The shells were designed to resist trauma and contamination, to be comfortable and expansible, and to facilitate tube fixation and management. Strap fixation was optimised during experimentation. Efficacy was assessed by direct observation of dressing and wound protection, tube integrity and by macroscopic and microscopic assessments of wound healing. Results The shells effectively protected the wounds against blunt and sharp trauma, were simple to remove and reapply, were well tolerated and allowed for growth of the pigs. Circumferential neck straps attached by lateral straps to the shells proved critical. There was no wound infection or inflammation underlying the shells. Porting tubing via mid-dorsal holes in the shells and affixing the tubing just cranial to these holes prevented tube damage and traction, permitted tube management from outside the cages and allowed the pigs to move freely without becoming entangled.
