Background: The purpose of this study was to quantify how much of the burden of visual impairment (VI) and unmet need in Talagang, identified by Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) survey data, has been addressed by Community Eye Health (CEH) programme efforts. Methods: A RAAB survey was carried out in November 2018, with 2,824 participants in Talagang Tehsil, Punjab, Pakistan, aged 50 and over. Census data were used to extrapolate survey data to the population. Alongside this, a CEH programme was launched, consisting of community eye screening, and onward referral to rural health centres, secondary or tertiary ophthalmological services, as required. This health intervention aimed to address the eye care needs surfaced by the initial survey. From 2018 to 2022, 30,383 people aged 50 or over were screened; 14,054 needed referral to further steps of the treatment pathway and more detailed data collection. Programme data were compared to estimates of population unmet needs. Main outcome measures were prevalence of VI, and proportion of need met by CEH Programme, by cause and level of VI. Results: Among those aged 50 and over, 51.0% had VI in at least one eye. The leading causes were cataract (46.2%) and uncorrected refractive error (URE) (25.0%). In its first four years, the programme reached an estimated 18.3% of the unmet need from cataract, and 21.1% of URE, equally in both men and women. Conclusions: Robustly collected survey and programme data can improve eye health planning, monitoring and evaluation, address inequities, and quantify the resources required for improving eye health. Vision screening and regular eye care can help detect and treat potentially irreversible vision impairment. This study aims to investigate the associations between sociodemographic and health characteristics and the receipt of eye care among children aged 17 years and younger in the United States. This cross-sectional study used data from the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH), a nationally representative and population-based survey of randomly sampled households. Participants were children aged 0 to 17 years, residing in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, whose caregivers or parents answered an address-based survey by mail or online. Weighted prevalence calculations were applied to analyze the data, and logistic regression was performed to explore associations between reported eye care and demographic, health, and parent-related variables. Caregiver-reported vision screenings, referral to an eye doctor after vision screening, eye doctor visits, and prescription of corrective lenses. Caregivers reported that 53.2% of children had a vision screening at least once (if child ≤ 5 years) or within the past 2 years (if child > 5 years). Of those screened, 26.9% were referred to an eye doctor. Overall, 38.6% of all children had a previous eye doctor visit, and among them, 55.4% were prescribed corrective lenses during the visit. Factors associated with decreased odds of vision screening included younger age, lack of health care visits, no insurance coverage, parent education high school or less, and lower household income. Non-White ethnicities, households with a non-English primary language, and lower incomes were more likely to be referred to an eye doctor after vision screening. Lower rates of eye doctor visits were associated with younger age, lack of insurance coverage, and primary household languages other than English. Children from disadvantaged backgrounds are less likely to receive vision screening and eye care. Children in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities often do not access follow-up eye care services when referred from vision screenings; whether this is due to lack of availability is not known. This paper highlights the need for vision and eye care for vulnerable children with practicing clinical optometrists well placed to provide vision care. Vision impairments develop from a young age and may inhibit learning experiences and impact life outcomes. Vision screening to detect and refer vision abnormalities supports children in their education and prevents minor vision impairments from worsening. This research describes outcomes from a vision screening programme for 4– to 5-year-olds delivered in Queensland, Australia. The programme involved all prep children from participating schools in Queensland. Vision screening was conducted with the Parr 4 m Visual Acuity Test and Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener. A cross-sectional study design was adopted. Descriptive data analyses explored the frequency of vision screening and referral outcomes. Inferential analyses examined associations between vision screening and referral outcomes with socio-economic indexes for areas (SEIFA) scores. Of 71,003 prep students screened, 4,855 (6.8%) received a referral recommendation. A higher proportion of children who received a referral recommendation was from more disadvantaged locations (?2 = 109.16, p < 0.001). Of the students referred, 3,017 were seen by an eye health professional. Further vision assessment of students by an eye health professional revealed that 43.3% of the referred children were diagnosed with a vision abnormality, 18.9% had no vision abnormality and 37.7% had an 'undetermined' diagnosis. A higher proportion of children confirmed with a vision abnormality were from more disadvantaged locations (?2 = 52.27, p < 0.001). It is important that vision screening programmes target disadvantaged populations and support families of children who require further health assessment to access health services. Objective: The main aim of this study was to determine the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practises about eye health among the Indian community. Methodology: The objective of this cross-sectional survey study was to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practises (KAP) of persons residing in rural areas of Bihar with visual impairment (VI) regarding their utilisation of medical eye-care services. The collection of KAP data occurred between the months of May and June 2023, facilitated by a group of proficient researchers. The survey consisted of a total of 16 Yes/No questions pertaining to the participant's knowledge of low vision and their behaviours regarding seeking eye care. Additionally, there was one question that required a singlechoice response regarding the participant's attitudes towards eye care. Furthermore, four singlechoice questions were included to assess the participant's tendencies in seeking eye care services. Results: There was no statistically significant disparity observed in the proportion of participants who had sought professional eye care prior to the survey, based on various demographic factors including gender, age, education, income level, family history of eye disease, visual acuity of the better-seeing eye, and personal history of diabetes or hypertension. There were notable disparities observed among individuals who self-identified their vision as poor, got an old-age pension, or had a personal history of eye disease. Specifically, approximately 36.4%, 66.7%, and 55.6% of these respective groups reported seeking medical care. The level of accurate understanding of visual acuity and eye disease exhibited significant variation throughout the sample. The highest proportion, 77.4% of participants, correctly recognised that individuals with myopia have the ability to see objects nearby but struggle with distant vision. Conversely, only a small percentage, 17.1%, were aware that the loss of far vision is not an inherent consequence of the ageing process. Conclusion: In summary, the visually impaired individuals in Bihar shown a lack of awareness regarding the importance of consistently accessing eye care services. Developing ways to enhance public awareness of the correlation between deteriorating vision and preventable blindness resulting from diagnosable and treatable illnesses within eye clinics situated in local hospitals is of utmost significance. Background: Improper refractive correction can be harmful to eye health, aggravating the burden of vision impairment. During most optometry clinical consultations, practitioner-patient interactions play a key role. Maybe it is feasible for patients themselves to do something to get high-quality optometry. But the present empirical research on the quality improvement of eye care needs to be strengthened. The study aims to test the effect of the brief verbal intervention (BVI) through patients on the quality of optometry service. Methods: This study will take unannounced standardized patient (USP) with refractive error as the core research tool, both in measurement and intervention. The USP case and the checklist will be developed through a standard protocol and assessed for validity and reliability before its full use. USP will be trained to provide standardized responses during optical visits and receive baseline refraction by the skilled study optometrist who will be recruited within each site. A multi-arm parallel-group randomized trial will be used, with one common control and three intervention groups. The study will be performed in four cities, Guangzhou and three cities in Inner Mongolia, China. A total of 480 optometry service providers (OSPs) will be stratified and randomly selected and divided into four groups. The common control group will receive USP usual visits (without intervention), and three intervention groups will separately receive USP visits with three kinds of BVI on the patient side. A detailed outcome evaluation will include the optometry accuracy, optometry process, patient satisfaction, cost information and service time. Descriptive analysis will be performed for the survey results, and the difference in outcomes between interventions and control providers will be compared and statistically tested using generalized linear models (GLMs). Discussion: This research will help policymakers understand the current situation and influencing factors of refractive error care quality, and then implement precise policies; at the same time, explore short and easy interventions for patients to improve the quality of optometry service. Homeless populations have lower health indicators, including in eye care. Few data exist on the levels and causes of visual impairment in Canadian homeless populations, and none in Montreal. This study aims to characterise the causes and levels of visual impairment, as well as eye care services utilisation among the Montreal homeless. Using random sampling, five homeless shelters were selected. In each shelter, 20 participants were randomly selected. After obtaining informed consent, participants completed an ocular examination, which included: presenting visual acuity (pinhole as needed), intraocular pressure, confrontation visual field, dilated fundus examination, post-dilation autorefraction and questionnaire on social determinants of health. A total of 95 participants were examined, of which 97.9% were male. The median age was 49 years old (interquartile range 38–56.5). The age-adjusted prevalence of visual impairment (presenting visual acuity <6/12) was 23.6% (95% CI 15.1–32.9) compared to 6.0% in the Canadian population (Z = 77.9, p < 0.0001). With pinhole correction, the prevalence of visual impairment dropped to 5.8% (95% CI 1.7–11.8). Prevalence was 8.2% (95% CI 3.7–15.9) for cataracts, 11.4% (95% CI 5.9–19.7) for glaucoma or suspects and 4.7% (95% CI 1.7–11.9) for diabetic retinopathy. Lastly, 18.9% of participants had an ocular examination within the last year compared to 41.4% in Canada (Z = −4.5, p < 0.0001) and 13.7% had never had a comprehensive eye examination. This sample population shows a prevalence of visual impairment which is four times that of the general Canadian population, with highly prevalent uncorrected refractive error, while accessing primary eye care twice less often. Technological advancement has brought commendable changes in medicine, advancing diagnosis, treatment, and interventions. Telemedicine has been adopted by various subspecialties including ophthalmology. Over the years, teleophthalmology has been implemented in various countries, and continuous progress is being made in this area. In underserved populations, due to socioeconomic factors, there is little or no access to healthcare facilities, and people are at higher risk of eye diseases and vision impairment. Transportation is the major hurdle for these people in obtaining access to eye care in the main hospitals. There is a dire need for accessible eye care for such populations, and teleophthalmology is the ray of hope for providing eye care facilities to underserved people. Numerous studies have reported the advantages of teleophthalmology for rural populations such as being cost-effective, timesaving, reliable, efficient, and satisfactory for patients. Although it is being practiced in urban populations, for rural populations, its benefits amplify. However, there are certain obstacles as well, such as the cost of equipment, lack of steady electricity and internet supply in rural areas, and the attitude of people in certain regions toward acceptance of teleophthalmology. Background and Objectives: The health-related mobile applications (app) might assist in promoting inclusive health and tele-treatment, especially for the less severe diseases. In this paper, a study had been done to determine the app's reliability in terms of raters and the app's agreement with the Snellen chart. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional sectional study was conducted between November 2019 and September 2020. Participants were selected via purposive sampling from selected communities in Terengganu state. All participants underwent vision testing with the Vis-Screen app and Snellen chart for validity and reliability accordingly. Results: A total of 408 participants were involved, with a mean age of 29.3. The sensitivity of the presenting vision of the right eye (PVR) ranged from 55.6% to 88.4%, with specificity between 94.7% to 99.3%, while the positive and negative predictive values were between 57.9% and 81.7% and 96.8% and 99.0%, respectively. The positive likelihood ratios ranged between 16.73 and 73.89, whereas the negative likelihood ratios ranged from 0.12 to 0.45. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for all cut-off points ranged between 0.93 and 0.97, and the optimum cut-off point was at 6/12. The kappa values for intra-rater and inter-rater were 0.85 and 0.75, respectively, while the app's reliability with the Snellen chart was 0.61. Conclusions: Vis-Screen was concluded to be valid and reliable for use as a screening tool for detecting individuals with visual impairment and blindness in the community. A valid and reliable portable vision screener like Vis-Screen will help expand the eye care feasibility while providing similar accuracy as the conventional charts in clinical practices. Aim: This study aimed to describe visual performance and the need for vision care services among Finnish older people receiving home care. We evaluated the applicability of the Resident Assessment Instrument of Home Care (RAI HC) in identifying visual impairment (VI) and the need for vision care services among older people. Design: A descriptive quantitative, cross‐sectional design. Methods: Visual impairment and the need for vision care services for older people receiving home care (N = 70) were determined by an optometrist's screening examination and vision assessment by home care workers using the RAI HC instrument. In this study, the definition of visual impairment was visual acuity (VA) <0.63 (logMAR >0.2). Results: According to the distance VA measurements, 41% of the participants showed VI (<0.63) of the better eye, while the RAI HC assessment revealed VI among 36% of the participants. The Kappa value for interrater reliability in classifying VI was 0.137. The optometrist's vision screening examination recognized a previously unknown and unmet need for vision care services more than twice as often as the RAI HC assessment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This healthcare quality improvement report focussed on the effectiveness of an orthoptic-led inpatient vision screening service at Nottingham University Hospitals for older adults admitted with a fragility hip fracture. The service was developed in response to national guidance, which recommended a multifactorial assessment, including a vision assessment for older adults presenting following a fall. Method: Vision screening was carried out by orthoptists on eligible patients ≥65 years of age admitted to the trauma and orthopaedic wards with a hip fracture. Retrospective data for patients screened between 2015–2019 were analysed, including: patient demographics; screening eligibility and outcome; ophthalmology referrals made; ophthalmology appointment attendance; and outcome. Results: Of the 3321 patients admitted with a hip fracture between 2015–2019, 2033 (61%) were eligible for vision screening and 1532 (75%) of these were screened. Furthermore, 784 (51%) of the patients screened had an ocular abnormality requiring an ophthalmology referral, or a sight test at an optician. Only 144 of the 383 (38%) who required an ophthalmology referral via the GP were successfully referred, and only 107 of the 186 (58%) patients who were given appointments attended them. Additionally, 98 of 107 had pathology, with cataracts the most common finding (51%), and 61 of 98 (62%) patients had treatable vision impairment. Conclusions: We found a large proportion of fragility hip fracture patients with impaired vision, much of which was treatable and could be detected effectively with orthoptic-led bedside screening. The most common eye problem in those referred to ophthalmology was cataracts. An internal referral pathway to ophthalmology is proposed. Purpose: To report on the factors associated with severe vision loss from fireworks-related ocular trauma during celebrations, including festivals. Methods: Tertiary eye care hospitals in 5 countries and private ophthalmology practices in the Netherlands. Patients included received treatment for fireworks-related ocular trauma during celebrations. Demographic and clinical data for patients affected were analyzed and associations with severe vision loss reported. Results: Of 388 patients, 71 (18.3 %) had severe vision loss (worse than 6/60) at 4-week follow-up due to fireworks-related ocular trauma. Mean age overall was 20.6 years (range 2 to 83 years), and there was a male predominance of 4:1. Clinical factors associated with severe vision loss included penetrating injury (OR 4.874 [95% CI 1.298–18.304; p = 0.02]) and lens injury (OR 7.023 [95% CI 2.378–20.736; p = 0.0004]). More patients with closed-globe injuries (CGIs) had improved vision after 4 weeks (OR 3.667, 1.096–12.27) compared to those with open-globe injuries (OGI) (p = 0.035). Eye protection use was reported by 7 patients, and 39.4% patients < 18 years were unsupervised by an adult at the time of injury. Conclusions: Severe vision loss from fireworks-related ocular trauma occurred during celebrations in a variety of countries and was associated with penetrating and/or lens injury and poor presenting vision. The Pandemic of 2020 impacted conducting in-person research. Our proposed project already had an asynchronous online component but was later morphed to add a synchronous online component, thereby eliminating the need for in-person assessment. The project compares the results of various tests between a group of children with Cerebral Visual Impairments (CVI) (N = 4) and an age-matched sample of children without CVI (N = 3) from a pediatric low vision clinic. This model was trialed with a small convenient sample of typically developing children in the same age range (N = 4). Given the positive feedback, recruitment for the larger study was done via encrypted e-mail rather than through traditional mailing. The asynchronous components included recruitment, pre-assessment information, the Flemish CVI questionnaire, Vineland-3 comprehensive parent questionnaire for assessment of age equivalent, and vision function tests, such as contrast sensitivity. The synchronous components were administered via Zoom telehealth provided by necoeyecare.org and included assessment of visual acuity via the Freiburg Visual Acuity and Contrast Test (FrACT) electronic software and assessment of visual perceptual batteries via the Children's Visual Impairment Test for developmental ages 3–6-years (CVIT 3–6). Our virtual testing protocol was successful in the seven participants tested. This paper reviews and critiques the model that we utilized and discusses ways in which this model can be improved. Aside from public health considerations during the pandemic, this approach is more convenient for many families. Children with autism spectrum disorder have a high risk of vision problems yet little is known about their vision care. This cross-sectional survey study, therefore, examined vision care among 351 children with autism spectrum disorder ages 6–17 years in the United States or Canada who were enrolled in the Autism Treatment Network Registry. Vision care variables were vision tested with pictures, shapes, or letters in the past 2 years; vision tested by an eye care practitioner (e.g. ophthalmologist, optometrist) in the past 2 years; prescribed corrective eyeglasses; and wore eyeglasses as recommended. Covariates included sociodemographic, child functioning, and family functioning variables. Multivariable models were fit for each vision care variable. Though 78% of children with autism spectrum disorder had their vision tested, only 57% had an eye care practitioner test their vision in the past 2 years. Among the 30% of children with autism spectrum disorder prescribed corrective eyeglasses, 78% wore their eyeglasses as recommended. Multivariable analysis results demonstrated statistically significant differences in vision care among children with autism spectrum disorder by parent education, household income, communication abilities, intellectual functioning, and caregiver strain. Overall, study results suggest many school-aged children with autism spectrum disorder do not receive recommended vision care and highlight potentially modifiable disparities in vision care. Children with autism are at high risk for vision problems, which may compound core social and behavioral symptoms if untreated. To examine the rate of self-reported vision impairment, eye disease, and eye care utilization among residents of subsidized senior housing (SSH) communities. In this cross-sectional, observational study, residents of 14 SSH communities in Jefferson County, AL, USA self-reported their vision status and eye care utilization as part of vision screening events held in their community. Two hundred and thirty-seven residents self-reported their vision status, presence of eye disease, and eye care utilization. A third of participants (33.3%) reported difficulty with distance vision while 38% reported difficulty with near vision. Rates of eye disease among this sample were as follows: 40.3% reported having cataracts, 13.6% reported having glaucoma, 4.2% reported having age-related macular degeneration, and 5.5% reported having diabetic retinopathy. The majority of participants (52.8%) had not been to see an eye care provider within the last year. Persons with vision impairment were less likely to report having seen an eye care provider within the last year than those without impairment (p =.03). This study illuminates the low utilization of eye care among socioeconomically disadvantaged older adults residing in SSH, especially among those with vision impairment and eye disease. Background: Visual problems can negatively affect visual development and learning but often go undetected. We assessed the feasibility of scaling up a school-based screening program to identify and treat kindergarten children with visual problems.Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study offering vision screening to junior (JK) and senior kindergarten (SK) children attending 43 schools in 15 Ontario communities. Screening comprised photoscreeners and tests of visual acuity, stereoacuity and eye alignment. Children who failed any test were referred for a comprehensive eye examination, with treatment as needed (e.g., glasses).Results: Using a passive consent model, 89% of children were screened compared with 62% using an active consent model (p < 0.001). Referral rates to an optometrist varied across schools (mean referral rate for children in JK 53%, range 25%-83%; mean referral rate for children in SK 34%, range 12%-61%). Among 4811 children who were screened, a visual problem was detected in 516 (10.7%), including 164 (3.4%) with amblyopia and 324 (6.7%) with clinically significant refractive errors. For 347 (67.2%) of the children with a visual problem, this was their first eye examination. Rescreening in Year 2 did not lead to detection of additional problems among children who passed screening in Year 1. Regardless of location (child's school or optometrist's office), 1563 (68.9%) of children attended the follow-up optometry examination. Most of the children who were surveyed (291 of 322, 90.4%) indicated that they enjoyed vision screening.Interpretation: Many children in Ontario with a visual problem were not being identified by the status quo in 2015-2017. Successful vision screening efforts require the implementation of 12 key components of a strong vision health system of care. The National Center for Children's Vision and Eye Health (NCCVEH) at Prevent Blindness partnered with the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) to provide guidance around these 12 components via a Vision and Eye Health webpage on the NASN website (https://www.nasn.org/nasn-resources/practice-topics/vision-health). This online resource is organized according to the 12 Components of a Strong Vison Health System of Care to support school nurses accountable for screening the vision of preschool and K-12 students. This NCCVEH/NASN webpage addresses key activities that support a child's vision health—beginning with parent/caregiver education and ending with an annual evaluation of the school's vision health system. Each of these 12 components will be described in NASN School Nurse. The May 2019 installment provided information about the 12 components approach as a whole and details on Family Education and a Comprehensive Communication/Approval Process. The National Center for Children's Vision and Eye Health (NCCVEH) at Prevent Blindness partnered with the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) to provide guidance for school nurses responsible for screening the vision of preschool and K–12 students. Goals of this national partnership are to (1) standardize approaches to vision health, (2) facilitate follow up to eye care for students who do not pass vision screening, (3) provide family/caregiver friendly educational information, and (4) consult with leading pediatric eye care experts to promote evidence-based best practices. The NCCVEH/NASN partnership created a Vision and Eye Health page on the NASN website (https://www.nasn.org/nasn-resources/practice-topics/vision-health). This resource is organized according to the 12 Components of a Strong Vision Health System of Care. The 12 components emerged as the NCCVEH considered vision screening from a systems perspective. This systems perspective addresses key activities along the entire spectrum of care that supports a child's vision health—beginning with parent/caregiver education and ending with an annual evaluation of the school's vision health system. Each of these 12 components will be described in 4 installments of NASN School Nurse in 2019. Follow up from universal vision screening at four to five years has been shown to be low in England, potentially increasing the risk of vision disorders not being treated. This study explores vision specialists' views on the perceived barriers and facilitators encountered when engaging with parents and young children, and the strategies adopted to improve child/parent centred care. Fifteen semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with eye care professionals to explore perspectives on the challenges of treating children. Thematic analysis was performed to identify key barriers and the strategies eye care professionals adopt to enhance person-centred eye care when working with young children and their families. Two overarching themes were identified related to the professional-patient relationship. The first reflects the challenges which vision specialists experience when treating children, considering lack of eye health education and negative attitudes to diagnosis and treatment as major barriers. The second discusses the strategies adopted to tackle those barriers. Three strategies are proposed to enhance child-centred eye care: more eye health education, more personalised communication to enhance referral uptake and the development of better coordinated pathways of care between schools, communities and hospital services. Current evidence-based and best-practice vision screening and eye health approaches, tools, and procedures are the result of revised national guidelines in the past 3 years and advances in research during the past 18 years. To help the busy school nurse with little time to keep up with changes in children’s vision practices and a growing body of literature, the National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness is providing answers to seven questions that are often received from the field. Topical areas are (1) instrument-based screening and stereopsis, (2) optotype-based screening if child is referred from instrument-based screening, (3) next steps if a student’s glasses are scratched or broken, (4) critical line screening with a threshold eye chart, (5) full threshold screening if student does not pass critical line screening, (6) holding a ruler beneath line of optotypes to identify, and (7) convergence insufficiency screening in the school setting. In the current model, some of our primary care technicians who manage our primary eye care "vision centres" shut them down when they service home care patients. Vulnerable communities like the elderly saw significantly poor access to eye care during the first and second waves of the pandemic.[[4]] To address this inequitable access today and for the future, we have developed a pyramidal model of eye care service delivery which brings eye care closer to communities that need them. Objective To review interventions improving eye-care services for schoolchildren in low- and middle-income countries. Methods We searched online databases (CINAHL, Embase®, ERIC, MEDLINE®, ProQuest, PubMed® and Web of ScienceTM) for articles published between January 2000 and May 2018. Eligible studies evaluated the delivery of school-based eye-care programmes, reporting results in terms of spectacle compliance rates, quality of screening or attitude changes. We considered studies to be ineligible if no follow-up data were reported. Two authors screened titles, abstracts and full-text articles, and we extracted data from eligible full-text articles using the availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality rights-based conceptual framework. Findings Of 24 559 publications screened, 48 articles from 13 countries met the inclusion criteria. Factors involved in the successful provision of school-based eye-care interventions included communication between health services and schools, the willingness of schools to schedule sufficient time, and the support of principals, staff and parents. Several studies found that where the numbers of eye-care specialists are insufficient, training teachers in vision screening enables the provision of a good-quality and cost--effective service. As well as the cost of spectacles, barriers to seeking eye-care included poor literacy, misconceptions and lack of eye health knowledge among parents. Conclusion The provision of school-based eye-care programmes has great potential to reduce ocular morbidity and developmental delays caused by childhood vision impairment and blindness. Policy-based support, while also attempting to reduce misconceptions and stigma among children and their parents, is crucial for continued access. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: To determine the spectacle reassessment rates of dissatisfied patients returning to the optical services department of a tertiary eye centre in India over a period of six years.Methods: A total of 169,567 spectacles were dispensed from the optical services department between January 2010 and December 2015. The spectacle reassessment forms of dissatisfied patients who returned to the optical services department with their spectacles were analysed.Results: A total of 797 spectacle reassessment forms were analysed. The overall spectacle reassessment rate during the study period was found to be 0.5% (95% CI: 0.467-0.472). The mean age of patients returning back for spectacle reassessment was 48 years (SD 19.9, range 3-97 years). Error in refractive correction measurement was found to be the most common reason for spectacle reassessment (54.7%), followed by dispensing error (21.1%), documentation errors while writing the prescription from the medical records in the tertiary eye care centre (12.7%), transcription error occurring at the optical services department (10.8%) and ocular pathologies (0.8%). No statistically significant difference was observed in the year-wise spectacle reassessment rates during the study period (p = 0.14).Conclusions: The frequency of spectacle reassessment rate in a tertiary eye care centre was low, with errors in measuring refractive errors contributing the most to the reassessment and reorder of spectacles. Objectives: The goal of this study was to determine whether adults across the life span differ in responses to quick vision screening and how those responses relate to adults' use of specialized eye care.Methods: Subjects were 363 community-dwelling ambulatory adults, 21 to 95 years old, who were tested while they wore their corrective lenses during routine visits to a tertiary care facility. No subjects had known neurological impairments, age-related macular degeneration, or other significant eye disease. A wall-mounted Early Treatment in Diabetic Retinopathy Study chart was used.Results: Older adults 58 years old or older had significantly worse scores than younger adults. Scores did not differ between subjects who had been tested within or prior to the last 10 months. Older subjects had their vision tested significantly more recently than younger subjects.Conclusions: Vision screening is quick, inexpensive, and easily performed by ancillary staff, and it may provide the physician with useful additional information for treatment planning. Introduction: Visual impairment has a silent chronic course which has a significant impact on the quality of life but is often a preventable community problem. Comprehensive assessment of ophthalmic outcomes should include not only the objective measurement but also the subjective perception of vision loss on vision function. Aim: To estimate the proportion of visual impairment and perceived visual functioning and also to find out the factors, if any associated with it, among women aged18-59 years in a slum of Kolkata. Methodology: It was a community-based cross-sectional study conducted among 153 women aged 18-59 years residing in a slum of Chetla, which is under the urban field practice area of All India Institute of Hygiene & Public Health, Kolkata within 3 months of duration (Mar - May 2017). Results: In the present study, 49(32%) study subjects were visually impaired among which 3(2%) were blind. 42.4% of study subjects' perceived poor visual function. Logistic regression showed aged 40 years and above, below and primary educational level, non-working, who had eye checkup and diabetic had higher odds of visual impairment and perceived poor visual function whereas after adjustment, diabetic status lost its significance. Objective: To describe visual problems among athletes with intellectual disabilities (IDs) and the role of vision in special sports. Design: A cross-sectional observational study. Setting: Athletes participating in Special Olympics European Summer Games 2010 in Warsaw attended vision screening by Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes. Participants: Coaches were encouraged to bring all athletes to screening without selection; 900 athletes from 52 European countries participated. Interventions: Standard noninvasive eye examination procedures. Independent variables were age, gender, sport, and country of origin. Main Outcome Measures: Eyeglasses wear, presenting visual acuity, refractive error, and ocular health. Results: Testability rates were very high. Findings confirmed high prevalence of ocular/visual defects in people with ID. There was an association between acuity and sport discipline. Few athletes used sports glasses. Screening revealed a lack of eye care even in the most developed nations. Conclusions: The impact of vision on sports activity in athletes with ID is significant. More needs to be done to ensure good vision and safety correction for active people with ID. Better provision and greater awareness of eye care in people with ID is needed in all European societies. Clinical Relevance: Data presented highlight the need for increased awareness of the role of vision in sporting achievements, personal development, and quality of life in active people with ID. Athletes with ID should have easily accessible comprehensive eye care, and when appropriate, corrective and protective glasses.
