Previous research has demonstrated a graded relationship between cumulative childhood adversity and adverse later outcomes. Individuals with out-of-home care (OHC) experience constitute a population characterised by both childhood and educational disadvantages. Based on a fifty-year follow-up of a Stockholm cohort born in 1953, the purpose of this study was to examine the associations between cumulative childhood adversity and long-term educational outcomes in this group. The cumulative disadvantage perspective suggests that there would be a negative association, while the disadvantage saturation perspective implies that cumulative adversity would be less consequential for disadvantaged individuals. By means of multigroup path analysis, we furthermore asked whether this association may differ in relation to individuals with child welfare contact (CWC) and to the general population (GP). Adjusting for socioeconomic conditions and cognitive ability, cumulative childhood adversity had a negative influence on midlife educational attainment in the GP. However, it did not seem to influence the educational outcomes of neither OHC experienced individuals nor individuals with other types of CWC. The results of this study thus lend support to the disadvantage saturation perspective. Further studies are needed to explore this relationship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims and objectives: To measure changes in health‐related quality of life, two dimensions of illness perceptions (i.e., consequences and emotional representations), fatigue and self‐efficacy in persons treated for colorectal cancer during the first year after surgical treatment, and to study how fatigue, illness perceptions and self‐efficacy measured at 3 months affect health‐related quality of life at 12 months postsurgery. Background: There are fluctuations in health‐related quality of life during the first year after treatment for colorectal cancer, and fatigue may negatively influence health‐related quality of life. Illness perceptions (consequences and emotional representations) and self‐efficacy have been shown to be associated with health‐related quality of life in other cancer diagnoses. Concerning colorectal cancer, there is a lack of knowledge concerning how illness perceptions and self‐efficacy change during recovery, and how these variables and fatigue at 3 months relate to health‐related quality of life at 12 months. Design: A prospective longitudinal design. Methods: Thirty‐nine persons surgically treated for colorectal cancer, of whom 17 had a colostomy, participated. Health‐related quality of life, fatigue, illness perceptions and self‐efficacy were assessed using QLQ‐C30, the Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire and the Maintain Function Scale. Descriptive and analytical statistics were used. Results: No changes were reported in levels of health‐related quality of life, fatigue or illness perceptions. Self‐efficacy was lower at 12 months compared to 3 months. Fatigue and one dimension of illness perceptions mediated the effect of self‐efficacy at 3 months on health‐related quality of life at 12 months. Conclusion: Persons treated for colorectal cancer who have lower self‐efficacy 3 months postsurgery are inclined to have more negative illness perceptions concerning emotions and to experience more fatigue. Relevance to clinical practice: Nurses need to support persons with fatigue and negative illness perceptions concerning emotions and to bolster their self‐efficacy, that is carry out follow‐up consultations focusing on illness management, symptoms, emotions and information on ways to increase self‐efficacy. Introduction Emotional distress in patients with chronic heart failure ( CHF) predicts mortality, hospital readmission and quality of life. The patient's avoidant coping style and beliefs about the disease have been linked to emotional distress in CHF. However, the pattern and transmitting effects of these variables are indefinite. Aim This study aimed to examine the links between and the potential mediating role of illness perceptions and avoidant coping style on depression and anxiety in patients with CHF. Method Self-assessment data from 103 patients with CHF were subjected to path analysis in two hypothesised models. The outcome measures were coping styles, illness perception, anxiety and depression. Results Avoidant coping had a direct adverse effect on anxiety and depression. The perception of symptom burden and personal control, significantly mediated the effect between avoidant coping and anxiety and depression. Conclusions Avoidant coping style appears to influence not only emotional distress, but also a malignant symptom perception and low sense of control over the illness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Providing high quality nursing care for patients with malignancies is complex and driven by many factors. Many of the associations between nursing care quality, trust, health status and individualized care remain obscure. Objective To empirically test a model of association linking hospitalized cancer patients’ health status, nursing care quality, perceived individuality in care and trust in nurses. Design A cross-sectional, exploratory and correlational study design was used. Settings This multi-site study was conducted in cancer care clinics, in-patient wards of five tertiary care hospitals in Cyprus, Finland, Greece and Sweden. Sample Out of 876 hospitalized patients with a confirmed histopathological diagnosis of cancer approached to participate in the study in consecutive order, 599 (response rate 68%) agreed to participate and the data from 590 were used for path analysis. Methods Data were collected in 2012–2013 with the Individualized Care Scale-Patient (ICS-Patient), the Oncology Patients’ Perceptions of Quality Nursing Care Scale (OPPQNCS), the Euro-Qol (EQ-5D-3L) and the Trust in Nurses Scale. Data were analysed statistically using descriptive and inferential statistics. Mplus version 7.11 was used to determine the best Trust model with path analysis. Results Although the model fit indices suggested that the hypothesized model did not perfectly to the data, a slightly modified model which includes the reciprocal path between individualized care and nursing care quality demonstrated a good fit. Conclusion A model of trust in nurses was developed. Health status, individualized care, and nursing care quality were found to be associated with trust. The model highlights the complexity of caring for cancer patients. Trust in nurses is influenced by the provision of individualized care. Generating and promoting trust requires interventions, which promote nursing care quality, individuality and patients’ health status. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
