The array interferometric synthetic aperture radar (Array InSAR) system resolves shadow issues by employing two scans in opposite directions, facilitating the acquisition of a comprehensive three-dimensional representation of the observed scene. The point clouds obtained from the two scans need to be transformed into the same coordinate system using registration techniques to create a more comprehensive visual representation. However, the two-point clouds lack corresponding points and exhibit distinct geometric distortions, thereby preventing direct registration. This paper analyzes the error characteristics of array InSAR point clouds and proposes a robust registration method for array InSAR point clouds in urban scenes. It represents the 3D information of the point clouds using images, with pixel positions corresponding to the azimuth and ground range directions. Pixel intensity denotes the average height of points within the pixel. The KAZE algorithm and enhanced matching approach are used to obtain the homonymous points of two images, subsequently determining the transformation relationship between them. Experimental results with actual data demonstrate that, for architectural elements within urban scenes, the relative angular differences of registered facades are below 0.5°. A wind field reconstruction method for dual-polarized (vertical-vertical [VV] and vertical-horizontal [VH]) Sentinel-1 (S-1) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images collected during tropical cyclones (TCs) that does not require external information is proposed. Forty S-1 images acquired in interferometric-wide (IW) and extra-wide (EW) modes during the Satellite Hurricane Observation Campaign in 2015–2022 were collected. Stepped-frequency microwave radiometer (SFMR) observations made onboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's hurricane aircraft are available for 13 images. The geophysical model functions, namely VV-polarized C-SARMOD and cross-polarized S-1 IW/EW mode wind speed retrieval model after noise removal (S1IW.NR/S1EW.NR), were employed to invert the wind fields from the collected images. TC wind fields were reconstructed based on SAR-derived winds, enhancing TC intensity representation in the VV-polarized SAR retrievals and minimizing the error of the VH-polarized SAR retrievals at the sub-swath edge. The wind speeds retrieved from the SAR IW image were validated against the remote-sensing products from the soil moisture active passive (SMAP) radiometer, yielding a root mean squared error (RMSE) of approximately 4.3 m s−1, which is slightly smaller than the RMSE (4.4 m s−1) for the operational CyclObs wind product provided by the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (IFREMER). However, the CyclObs wind product has better performance than the approach proposed in this paper for the S-1 EW mode. Moreover, the RMSE of the wind speed between SAR-derived wind speed obtained using the proposed approach and the CyclObs wind product is within 3 m s−1 in all flow directions clockwise relative to north centered on the TC's eye. This study provides an alternative method for TC wind retrieval from dual-polarized S-1 images without suffering saturation problem and external information; however, the pattern of the wind field around the TC's eye needs to be further improved, especially at the head and back of the TC's eye. This paper presents a strategy for extracting three-dimensional (3D) mining deformation from a single-geometry synthetic aperture radar (SAR) dataset. In light of the directionality of horizontal displacement caused by underground mining, we first re-model the proportional relationship between horizontal displacement and horizontal gradient of subsidence. Afterward, to improve the stability of the re-model, a solution strategy is proposed by setting different solution starting points and directions. The proposed method allows hiring of arbitrary single-geometry SAR data (e.g., air-borne, space-borne, and ground-borne SAR data) to reconstruct 3D displacements of mining areas. The proposed method has been validated through simulation and in-site data. The simulation data monitoring results indicate that the root mean square errors (RMSE) of the 3D displacements extracted by the proposed strategy are 0.45, 0.5, and 2.98 mm for the vertical subsidence, east–west, and north–south horizontal displacements, respectively. The in-site data monitoring results indicate that the RMSE of vertical subsidence compared with the leveling data are 7.3 mm. Furthermore, the MSBAS method was employed to further validate the reliability of the proposed method, the results show that the proposed method is effective to obtain the 3D deformation of the mining area, which greatly improves the applicability of SAR interferometry in the 3D deformation monitoring of the mining areas. In this paper, sea surface waves during complex sea state (i.e. tropical cyclones (TCs) and Kuroshio current) are inverted from dual-polarized (vertical – vertical (VV) and vertical – horizontal (VH)) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images using an existing algorithm, namely, the parameterized first-guess spectrum method (PFSM). In particular, the wind term is included in two modulation transfer functions (MTFs), i.e. tilt modulation and velocity bunching. More than 3000 Sentinel (S-1) images acquired in interferometric wide (IW) mode and extra wide (EW) mode are collected, and the operational CyclObs wind product provided by the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Oceans (IFREMER) is collected corresponding to the TC images. Note that these images are located within 500 km away from TC eyes. The wave spectra during the TCs are then inverted using the PFSM algorithm and the SAR-derived wind product. Simultaneously, the 0.05° gridded wave spectra collocated with these images are simulated using a third-generation numeric wave model, called WAVEWATCH-III (WW3), in which the reconstructed wind based on the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) current, and the CMEMS sea level are treated as the forcing field. Comparison of the SAR wave retrievals and simulations reveals that the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the significant wave height (SWH) and mean wave period (MWP) are 0.55 m and 0.43 s, their correlation coefficients (COR) are 0.94 and 0.92, and their scatter index (SI) values are 0.17 and 0.07. These results demonstrate the better performance of the PFSM algorithm using theoretical MTFs, i.e. an RMSE of 0.68 m and COR of 0.90 for the SWH and an RMSE of 0.60 s and a COR of 0.87 for the MWP. Although the accuracy of the wave retrieval from the SAR image under complex sea state is improved when implementing the tilt and velocity bunching MTFs with the strong wind term, SWH retrievals by algorithm PFSM suffer saturation problem at SWH > 8 m. Persistent scatterer interferometric synthetic aperture radar (PS-InSAR) is a widely used technique for local ground deformation estimation due to its millimetric accuracy and full-resolution results. However, with the enhancement of data acquisition capability of the SAR sensors, larger coverage and higher temporal-spatial resolution of SAR images can cause explosive increase and uneven distribution of PS points. PS network constructed between PSs with different qualities may cause spatial-error propagation. Large PS points list with large amount of data also have high requirements on computing performance and storage space. Those problems can bring big challenge for PS-InSAR technique in processing capacity, deformation monitoring accuracy and algorithm efficiency. In order to effectively overcome those limitations, this paper proposed a novel block PS-InSAR method that uses the approach of partitioning a study area into regular blocks with overlapping regions, selecting a high-quality reference point for each block and eliminating the discontinuity of the parameter calculating results in adjacent blocks by the weighted least square method. We used this approach to analyze ground subsidence in over 13,000 km2 of southern California, and it performed successfully when 69 Sentinel-1 images were used and 21,029,968 PSs were selected. Only approximately 10 h was needed for this experiment. Comparing the deformation rate and time series of the InSAR results with 29 GPS observations, the mean and standard deviation of difference of deformation rate were − 0.63 mm/yr and 1.53 mm/yr, respectively, and the average root mean squared error of deformation time series was 3.7 mm. Because the penetration depth of electromagnetic waves in forests is large in the longer wavelength band, most traditional forest height estimation methods are carried out using polarimetric interferometry synthetic aperture radar (PolInSAR) data of the L or P band, and the estimation method is a three-stage method based on the random volume over ground (RVoG) model. For X-band electromagnetic waves, the penetration depth of radar waves in forests is limited, so the traditional forest height estimation method is no longer applicable. In view of the above problems, in this paper we propose a new forest height estimation strategy for airborne X-band PolInSAR data. Firstly, the sub-view interferometric SAR pairs obtained via frequency segmentation (FS) in the Doppler domain are used to extend the polarimetric interferometry coherence coefficient (PolInCC) range of the original SAR image under different polarization states, so as to obtain the accurate ground phase. For the determination of the effective volume coherence coefficient (VCC), part of the fitting line of the extended-range PolInCC distribution that is intercepted by the fixed extinction coherence coefficient curve (FECCC) of the fixed range is averaged to obtain the accurate effective VCC. Finally, the high-precision forest canopy height in the X-band is estimated using the effective VCC with the ground phase removed in the look-up table (LUT). The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified using airborne-measured data obtained in Shaanxi Province, China. The comparison was carried out using different strategies, in which we substituted one step of the process with the conventional method. The results indicated that our new strategy could reduce the root mean square error (RMSE) of the predicted canopy height vastly to 1.02 m, with a lower estimation height error of 12.86%. Due to the differences in radiation and geometric characteristics of optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, there is still a huge challenge for accurate matching. In this paper, we propose a patch-matching network (PM-Net) to improve the matching performance of optical and SAR images. First, a multi-level keypoints detector (MKD) with fused high-level and low-level features is presented to extract more robust keypoints from optical and SAR images. Second, we use a two-channel network structure to improve the image patch matching performance. Benefiting from this design, the proposed method can directly learn the similarity between optical and SAR image patches without manually designing features and descriptors. Finally, the MKD and two-channel net-work are trained separately on GL3D and QXS-SAROPT data sets, and the PM-Net is tested on multiple pairs of optical and SAR images. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms four advanced image matching networks on qualitative and quantitative assessments. The quantitative experiment results show that using our method correct matching points numbers are increased by more than 1.15 times, the value of F1-measure is raised by an average of 7.4% and the root mean squared error (RMSE) is reduced by more than 15.3%. The thermal noise-induced distortions in a Sentinel-1 terrain observation with progressive scans synthetic aperture radar image cannot be corrected by the noise equivalent sigma nought (NESZ) subtraction only. Since the thermal noise is scaled during synthetic aperture radar processing, it resides not only as an additive noise in each pixel but also as a multiplicative noise in the interpixel contrast. In this paper, we investigate the noise characteristics and propose an efficient method for the multiplicative textural noise correction. The core ideas are to find the optimal coefficient of the noise-induced standard deviation (SD) and model the noise contribution to the local SD as a function of the NESZ and the signal-to-noise ratio. Denoising is accomplished by a subwindow-wise adaptive rescaling of the pixel values. In recent decades, agricultural plains have been subject to significant subsidence in different parts of the world including Iran. Tehran plain is one of these parts exposed to land subsidence. In this paper, as the most effective method to monitor the subsidence, synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) makes use of two radar images to measure the ground surface deformation between two acquisitions. For this purpose, two different radar datasets including 16 ENVISAT ASAR images spanning from 2003 to 2008 and 12 Sentinel-1A images spanning from 2016 to 2017 were applied in InSAR small baseline subset (SBAS) time series analysis. Two distinct subsidence time series achieved from the two datasets were integrated using an appropriate model which was fitted to all data obtained from two time series results from 2003 to 2017 and verified running leveling measurements. The average value of the root mean square errors (RMSEs) calculated between the model and the achieved time series at all pixels is 0.02 m which is an illustration of the accuracy of the proposed model to join the two deformation time series results. Furthermore, the integration results were additionally used to discover the storage properties of the aquifer system by stress–strain relationship and the effect of aquitard thickness on subsidence of Tehran plain by subsidence-aquitard thickness (fine-grained interbed) relationship, respectively. The stress–strain relationship shows a low correlation between subsidence and groundwater exploitation where a direct relationship between subsidence and aquitard thickness is clearly obvious. The use of freely accessible Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (S-1 SAR) and Sentinel-2 multispectral instrument (S-2 MSI) data are currently a feasible way of mapping forest aboveground biomass (AGB) over large areas. Despite the extensive mapping of forest AGB by remote sensing, how to effectively combine different sensors data, selecting the proper statistical modelling method, and variable screening are still poorly understood. This paper presents a framework for Sentinel-based AGB estimation through the use of four variable screening techniques, namely, genetic algorithm (GA), least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), boruta, and removal-based; and three statistical modelling methods including multiple linear regression (MLR), artificial neural network (ANN), and random forest (RF). These methods were examined across two forested sites with different levels of human activity (highly-degraded: HD and minorly-degraded: MD) in Zagros coppice oak forests. We used backscatter coefficients and texture metrics of S-1 SAR, in addition to raw bands, simple band ratios, vegetation indices and texture metrics of S-2 MSI to extract 53 explanatory variables. Our findings showed that GA and removal-based variable screening techniques outperformed the others and RF and MLR statistical modelling methods obtained the best results. The use of different variable screening techniques and modelling methods demonstrated higher accuracies of AGB estimates for the MD site compared to the HD site. S-2 MSI (Coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.76 and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) = 35.08% of the mean) provided a higher accuracy than S-1 SAR (R2 = 0.42 and RMSE = 52.94% of the mean). Overall, the study demonstrates encouraging results in the retrieval and predictive mapping of the AGB of Zagros forests using the freely accessible Sentinel imagery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines a simple geometrical method for forest height estimation using single-baseline single frequency polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry (PolInSAR) data. The suggested method estimates the forest biophysical parameters based on the varied extinction random volume over ground (VERVoG) model with top layer extinction greater than zero. We approach the problem using a geometrical method without the need for any auxiliary data or prior information. The biophysical parameters, i.e. top layer extinction value, forest height and extinction gradient are estimated in two separate stages. In this framework, the offset value of the extinction is estimated in an independent procedure as a function of a geometrical index based on the signal penetration in the volume layer. As a result, two remaining biophysical parameters can be calculated in a geometrical way based on the observed volume coherence. The proposed algorithm was evaluated using the L-band PolInSAR data of the European Space Agency (ESA) BioSAR 2007 campaign. A pair of experimental SAR (ESAR) images was acquired over the Remningstorp test site in southern Sweden. The selected images were employed for the performance analysis of the proposed approach in the forest height estimation application based on the VERVoG model. The experimental result shows that the proposed inversion method based on the VERVoG model with top layer extinction greater than zero estimates the volume height with an average root mean square error (RMSE) of 2.08 m against light detection and ranging (LiDAR) heights. It presents a significant improvement of forest height accuracy, i.e. 4.1 m compared to the constant extinction RVoG model result, which ignores the forest heterogeneity in the vertical direction. Complex image registration is a crucial step in interferometric synthetic aperture sonar (InSAS) signal processing. The registration quality directly influences the generation of interferogram and subsequent reconstruction of digital elevation model (DEM). Utilizing the geometric model of imaging, the rational function relationship between offset and slant range is deduced, thus this paper propose a new InSAS complex image registration method based on second order rational function surface fitting. Compared with the traditional polynomial surface fitting method, the proposed method in this paper has the advantages of higher precision and smaller calculation cost. The evaluation has been carried out using the root mean squared error(RMSE), correlation coefficient,residue numbers and computing time as the criteria. Deformation along a subway rail network is related to the safe operation of the subway and the stability of construction facilities on the surface, making long-term deformation monitoring imperative. Long-term monitoring of surface deformation along the subway network and statistical analysis of the overall deformation situation are lacking in China. Therefore, targeting 35 Chinese cities whose subway mileage exceeds 50 km, we extracted their surface deformation along subway networks between 2018 and 2022, using spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry (InSAR) technology and Sentinel-1 satellite data. We verified the results with the continuous global navigation satellite system (GNSS) stations' data and found that the root mean square error (RMSE) of the InSAR results was 3.75 mm/year. Statistical analysis showed that ground subsidence along the subways was more prominent in Beijing, Tianjin, and other areas in the North China Plain, namely Kunming (which is dominated by karst landforms), as well as Shanghai, Guangzhou, Qingdao, and other coastal cities. In addition, an analysis revealed that the severity of surface subsidence correlated positively with a city's gross domestic product (GDP) with a Pearson correlation of 0.787, since the higher the GDP, the more frequent the construction and maintenance of subway, and the more commuters there are, which in turn exacerbates the disturbance to the surface. Additionally, the type of land cover also affects the ground deformation. Our findings provide a reference for constructing, operating, and maintaining the urban subway systems in China. Crop growth parameters are the basis for evaluation of crop growth status and crop yield. The aim of this study was to develop a more accurate estimation model for corn growth parameters combined with multispectral vegetation indexes (VIopt) and the differential radar information (DRI) derived from SAR data. Targeting the estimation of corn plant height (H) and the BBCH (Biologische Bundesanstalt, Bundessortenamt and CHemical industry) phenological parameters, this study compared the estimation accuracies of various multispectral vegetation indexes (VIopt) and the corresponding VIDRI (vegetation index corrected by DRI) indexes in inverting the corn growth parameters. (1) When comparing the estimation accuracies of four multispectral vegetation indexes (NDVI, NDVIre1, NDVIre2, and S2REP), NDVI showed the lowest estimation accuracy, with a normalized root mean square error (nRMSE) of 20.84% for the plant height, while S2REP showed the highest estimation accuracy (nRMSE = 16.05%). In addition, NDVIre2 (nRMSE = 16.18%) and S2REP (16.05%) exhibited a higher accuracy than NDVIre1 (nRMSE = 19.27%). Similarly, for BBCH, the nRMSEs of the four indexes were 24.17%, 22.49%, 17.04% and 16.60%, respectively. This confirmed that the multispectral vegetation indexes based on the red-edge bands were more sensitive to the growth parameters, especially for the Sentinel-2 red-edge 2 band. (2) The constructed VIDRI indexes were more beneficial than the VIopt indexes in enhancing the estimation accuracy of corn growth parameters. Specifically, the nRMSEs of the four VIDRI indexes (NDVIDRI, NDVIre1DRI, NDVIre2DRI, and S2REPDRI) decreased to 19.64%, 18.11%, 15.00%, and 14.64% for plant height, and to 23.24%, 21.58%, 15.79%, and 15.91% for BBCH, indicating that even in cases of high vegetation coverage, the introduction of SAR DRI features can further improve the estimation accuracy of growth parameters. Our findings also demonstrated that the NDVIre2DRI and S2REPDRI indexes constructed using red-edge 2 band information of Sentinel-2 and SAR DRI features had more advantages in improving the estimation accuracy of corn growth parameters. Coregistration is among the most important and challenging tasks when dealing with multiple synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, especially when they are acquired at different time instants and characterised by low signal to noise power ratio (SNR) that contributes to their coherence reduction. However, even if some technological expedients could be implemented to maintain the same trajectory and to compensate for these inaccuracies during the acquisition campaign, multitemporal SAR images always need additional registration refinements after compression. Usually, to coregister a series of multitemporal SAR images, one of them is selected as the master, and the remainders are separately registered to it. Differently, in this study, a new strategy is developed to jointly coregister a stack of multitemporal SAR images. It is based on the exploitation of the cross‐correlations in turn computed from each couple of cross‐correlations (a.k.a. cross‐cross‐correlations) of the extracted patches. By doing so, the method is capable of exploiting also the respective misregistration information between the slaves during the estimation process. In this respect, this methodology is applied to enhance the registration capabilities of the constrained Least Squares (CLS) optimisation method, which instead does not account for the reciprocal information related to the slaves. Several tests are performed on multitemporal airborne‐measured SAR data. Obtained results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in terms of achieved root mean square error for images affected by respective rotations also in comparison with the CLS counterpart. The present study explores a three-dimensional deformation monitoring method for the better delineation of the surface subsidence range in coal mining by combining the mining subsidence law with the geometries of SAR imaging. The mining surface subsidence of the filling working face in Shandong, China, from March 2018 to June 2021, was obtained with 97 elements of Sentinel-1A data, the small baseline subset (SBAS) technique, and the proposed method, respectively. By comparison with the ground leveling of 46 observation stations, it is shown that the average standard deviation of the SBAS monitoring results is 10.3 mm; with this deviation, it is difficult to satisfy the requirements for the delimitation of the mining impact area. Meanwhile, the average standard deviation of the vertical deformation obtained by the proposed method is 6.2 mm. Compared to the SBAS monitoring accuracy, the monitoring accuracy of the proposed method is increased by 39.8%; thus, it meets the requirements for the precise delineation of the surface subsidence range for backfill mining. Soil moisture (SM) plays a significant part in regional hydrological and meteorological systems throughout Earth. It is considered an indispensable state variable in earth science. The high sensitivity of microwave remote sensing to soil moisture, and its ability to function under all weather conditions at all hours of the day, has led to its wide application in SM retrieval. The aim of this study is to evaluate the ability of ALOS-2 data to estimate SM in areas with high vegetation coverage. Through the water cloud model (WCM), the article simulates the scene coupling between active microwave images and optical data. Subsequently, we use a genetic algorithm to optimize back propagation (GA-BP) neural network technology to retrieve SM. The vegetation descriptors of the WCM, derived from optical images, were the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), the normalized difference water index (NDWI), and the normalized multi-band drought index (NMDI). In the vegetation-covered area, 240 field soil samples were collected simultaneously with the ALOS-2 SAR overpass. Soil samples at two depths (0–10 cm, 20–30 cm) were collected at each sampling site. The backscattering of the ALOS-2 with the copolarization was found to be more sensitive to SM than the crosspolarization. In addition, the sensitivity of the soil backscattering coefficient to SM at a depth of 0–10 cm was higher than at a depth of 20–30 cm. At a 0–10 cm depth, the best results were the mean square error (MAE) of 2.248 vol%, the root mean square error (RMSE) of 3.146 vol%, and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 0.056 vol%, when the vegetation is described as by the NDVI. At a 20–30 cm depth, the best results were an MAE of 2.333 vol%, an RMSE of 2.882 vol%, a MAPE of 0.067 vol%, with the NMDI as the vegetation description. The use of the GA-BP NNs method for SM inversion presented in this paper is novel. Moreover, the results revealed that ALOS-2 data is a valuable source for SM estimation, and ALOS-2 L-band data was sensitive to SM even under vegetation cover. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nowadays, polarimetric interferometric synthetic aperture radar (PolInSAR) has attracted increasing attention for the simultaneous acquisition of scattering and terrain information. The scattering mechanism vectors corresponding to the optimal coherences have shown great effect in land cover classification and forest mapping. To extract scattering mechanism vectors, different optimization algorithms are proposed but always accompanied with spatial discontinuities. This letter proposes a method to optimize scattering mechanism vectors based on nonlocal estimations. A pixel‐by‐pixel optimization model is established by calculating patch‐based nonlocal similarity, which effectively reduces the uncertainty of scattering mechanism vector estimation while maintaining high resolution. The phase recovery experiment is conducted on simulated data and the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of three algorithms are compared. The proposed method performs better with a RMSE of 0.22 in the whole image, against 0.25 and 1.27 for other algorithms. The recovery results in the target region (RMSE 0.11 against 0.21 and 0.99) and linear edge region (RMSE 0.26 against 0.49 and 1.52) also indicate strong ability in detail preservation. Then the observed ESAR data is utilized for further assessment. It demonstrates that the proposed method has a significant improvement to reduce singularities and distinguish artificial buildings. Vegetation height estimation plays a pivotal role in forest mapping, which significantly promotes the study of environment and climate. This paper develops a general forest structure model for vegetation height estimation using polarimetric interferometric synthetic aperture radar (PolInSAR) data. In simple terms, the temporal decorrelation factor of the random volume over ground model with volumetric temporal decorrelation (RVoG-vtd) is first modeled by random motions of forest scatterers to solve the problem of ambiguity. Then, a novel four-stage algorithm is proposed to improve accuracy in forest height estimation. In particular, to compensate for the temporal decorrelation mainly caused by changes between multiple observations, one procedure of temporal decorrelation adaptive estimation via Expectation-Maximum (EM) algorithm is added into the novel method. On the other hand, to extract the features of amplitude and phase more effectively, in the proposed method, we also convert Euclidean distance to a generalized distance for the first time. Assessments of different algorithms are given based on the repeat-pass PolInSAR data of Gabon Lope Park acquired in AfriSAR campaign of German Aerospace Center (DLR). The experimental results show that the proposed method presents a significant improvement of vegetation height estimation accuracy with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 6.23 m and a bias of 1.28 m against LiDAR heights, compared to the results of the three-stage method (RMSE: 8.69 m, bias: 4.81 m) and the previous four-stage method (RMSE: 7.72 m, bias: −2.87 m). Monitoring the subsidence at different periods in high underground water level coal mine areas can provide a data basis for land reclamation. For the purpose of monitoring subsidence in I working face located in Guotun Coal Mine, 22 Sentinel-1 images were processed by using differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (D-InSAR). After dividing subsidence periods, the characteristics and monitoring accuracy at different subsidence periods were explored. The results showed that: (1) The formation of single-gradient subsidence funnel is an important sign to identify active period. (2) The root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) in central area of subsidence are reduced by 50% and 49%, respectively, compared with those in edge area. (3) The monitoring accuracy is high at different subsidence periods. The coefficient of determination (R2) can reach more than 0.89. This paper introduces a method for estimating a series of sea state parameters from satellite-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The method was realized in a near real time (NRT) application which allows for the processing of data from different satellites and modes. The algorithm estimates the total significant wave height H s , dominant and secondary swell and windsea wave heights, first, and second moment wave periods, the mean wave period and the period of wind sea. The algorithm was applied to the Sentinel-1 (S1) C-band Interferometric Wide Swath Mode (IW), Extra Wide (EW) and Wave Mode (WV) Level-1 (L1) products and also extended to X-band TerraSAR-X (TS-X) StripMap (SM) products. The scenes are processed in raster and result in continuous sea state fields, with the exception of S1 WV, where averaged values for sea state parameters for along-orbit imagettes of 20 km × 20 km are presented. The developed empirical algorithm consists of two parts: a first CWAVE_EX (extended CWAVE) part, based on a linear regression approach, and a subsequent machine learning part using the support vector machine (SVM) technique. A series of new data preparation steps (i.e. filtering, denoising) and new features estimated from SAR images are also introduced. The algorithm was tuned and validated using two independent global wave model hindcasts, WaveWatch-3 and MFWAM as well as National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) measurements. The achieved root mean squared errors (RMSE) for CWAVE_EX for the total H s are 0.60 m for low-resolution modes S1 IW (10 m pixel) and EW (40 m pixel) and 0.35 m for S1 WV and TS-X SM (pixel spacing ca.1–4 m) in comparison to model predictions. The RMSEs of the retrieved wave periods are in the range of 0.45–0.90 s for all of the satellites and models considered. Similarly, the dominant and secondary swell, and wind sea wave height RMSEs are in the range of 0.35–0.80 m. The SVM postprocessing improves the accuracy of the initial results of CWAVE_EX for H s and reaches an RMSE of 0.25 m for S1 WV. Comparisons to 64 NDBC buoys, collocated at distances shorter than 50 km to S1 WV imagettes worldwide, result in an RMSE of 0.41 m. All results and the methods presented are novel in terms of the accuracy achieved, combining the classical approach with machine learning techniques, and performing an automatic NRT processing of multiparametric sea state fields from L1 data with automatic switching for different satellites and modes. The complete archive of S1 WV L1 Single Look Complex products from December 2014 until February 2021 was processed to create a sea state parameter database and validated using model hindcast and buoy measurements. Empirical wind-retrieval algorithms for synthetic aperture radar (SAR), such as the geophysical model function (GMF) CMOD5N in the C-Band, are currently well developed. The retrieval accuracy of GMFs, however, is lower in the presence of marine phenomena such as oceanic fronts and mesoscale eddies, making SAR wind retrieval challenging under these conditions. In this study, we proposed a scheme for wind retrieval from Chinese Gaofen-3 (GF-3) SAR images using an analytical approach to obtain the wind speed in the nearshore waters of China's seas. Approximately 300 images were acquired from 2018 to 2021 in the copolarization channels [vertical–vertical (VV) and horizontal–horizontal (HH)]. The images were collocated with the measurements from the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) and the Chinese Haiyang-2B (HY-2B) scatterometer. Our analytical approach was based on the Bragg resonant and non-Bragg (NB) scattering model for the calculation of the normalized radar backscatter cross-section (NRCS), which accounted for the influence of wave-current interactions and breaking waves in nearshore waters. We used the sea surface currents obtained from the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) to simulate the Bragg resonant roughness. We derived the contribution of the NB breaking waves from the SAR-measured NRCS values in both the VV and HH channels. By comparing the retrieval results obtained using the analytical approach with the scatterometer products, we concluded that the root mean square error (RMSE) of the wind speed was 2.01 m s−1 with a 0.91 correlation coefficient (COR), which was less than the 2.93 m s−1 RMSE and 0.72 COR for the GMF CMOD5N. The variation in the bias of the HYCOM currents was approximately 1 m s−1 for current speeds greater than 0.3 m s−1. Lateral motion estimation has been a challenge in ultrasound elastography mainly due to the low resolution, low sampling frequency, and lack of phase information in the lateral direction. Synthetic transmit aperture (STA) can achieve high resolution due to two-way focusing and can beamform high-density image lines for improved lateral motion estimation with the disadvantages of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and limited penetration depth. In this study, Hadamard-encoded STA (Hadamard-STA) is proposed for the improvement of lateral motion estimation in elastography, and it is compared with STA and conventional focused wave (CFW) imaging. Simulations, phantom, and in vivo experiments were conducted to make the comparison. The normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) and the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were calculated as the evaluation criteria in the simulations. The results show that, at a noise level of −10 dB and an applied strain of −1% (compression), Hadamard-STA decreases the NRMSEs of lateral displacements by 46.92% and 35.35%, decreases the NRMSEs of lateral strains by 52.34% and 39.75%, and increases the CNRs by 9.70 and 9.75 dB compared with STA and CFW, respectively. In the phantom experiments performed on a heterogeneous tissue-mimicking phantom, the sum of squared differences (SSD) between the reference and the motion-compensated RF data, and the CNR were calculated as the evaluation criteria. At an applied strain of −1.80%, Hadamard-STA is found to decrease the SSDs by 20.91% and 30.99% and increase the CNRs by 14.15 and 24.66 dB compared with STA and CFW, respectively. In the experiments performed on a breast phantom, Hadamard-STA achieves better visualization of the breast inclusion with a clearer boundary between the inclusion and the background than STA and CFW. The in vivo experiments were performed on a patient with a breast tumor, and the tumor could also be better visualized with a more homogeneous background in the strain image obtained by Hadamard-STA than by STA and CFW. Underground longwall mining activities usually induce three-dimensional (3-D) multi-level surface deformation, which could lead to serious natural hazards. Offset-tracking (OT) and differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) technology (referred to as OTD-InSAR) can be used to observe the large-level and small-level mining deformations based on single InSAR pair, but the measured deformation is only along the radar line-of-sight (LOS) or the azimuth directions rather than in the 3-D directions. The conventional InSAR-based methods to resolve 3-D mining deformation have the strict restrictions and low south-north accuracy. In this paper, a novel methodology is proposed to utilize a multi-level deformation fusion model and the Lagrange multiplier method based on single OTD-InSAR pair (hereafter called MAOTD-InSAR) to estimate and optimize the 3-D multi-level surface deformation. The Daliuta coal mining area of China was selected to verify the feasibility and precision of the proposed method using high resolution TerraSAR-X (TSX) SAR images with six pairs. Results show that the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of MAOTD-InSAR against in-situ measured data are less than 0.2214 m, 0.1612 m and 0.1880 m in the east, north and vertical directions, respectively. The minimum RMSE in the horizontal direction could reach 0.0361 m with an improvement of about 82.6%, which particularly improve the accuracy in the south-north direction for the TSX satellite since its direction of azimuth deformation is approximately north direction, and this is also adequate for the other satellites in the near-polar orbit. In addition, an empirical model was generated with respect to the gradients of ground fissures on horizontal deformation, and this model enabled us to remove large errors caused by ground fissures. The verification results show that the proposed method provides higher precision and reliability for the resolved 3-D multi-level surface deformation, which presents 3-D mining deformation with more details from the edge to the center of the subsidence basin and will show some possibilities for new findings and interpretations in the process of coal mining. Caused by the underground longwall mining activities, ground deformation, which includes sudden large-level deformation, slow small-level deformation and the middle-level deformation between them, can lead to serious construction damage and ecological environment degradation. In this paper, we propose a new fusion model that is able to completely retrieve multi-level deformation with measured radar line-of-sight (LOS) deformation from offset-tracking (OT) and differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) technique (referred to as OTD-InSAR). The results from OTD-InSAR show that small-level deformation on the edge of subsidence basin and large-level deformation in the central portion of subsidence basin are measured with high accuracy. The multi-level deformation fusion model considers the geographic information and SAR data information simultaneously to fuse large-level and small-level deformation and use inverse distance weighting method (IDW) to estimate the middle-level deformation. Due to the insufficient measured data in the actual situation, we present the prediction model to forecast the long period deformation evolution of full workface based on the exponent Knothe model and the fusion results. The 52,303 workface in Daliuta coal mining area in China was selected to verify the effectiveness of the fusion model and prediction model. The comparison between the fusion results and the in-situ measured data shows that the root mean square error (RMSE) is less than 0.23 m. Results of deformation prediction model are found to be very close to fusion results and the RMSE is less than 0.027 m. This research work has brought about a comprehensive analysis of the deformation evolution of the full workface with high precision from the beginning to the end of coal mining for about 18 months. An optimal model was developed for accounting forest carbon stock from synergistic use of optical data from Landsat TM and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from COSMO-Skymed (X-band), Radarsat-2 (C-band) and ALOS PALSAR (L-band) sensors over a tropical deciduous heterogeneous forest of India. The best-fit integrated multiple linear regression model had a model accuracy of 83%, r2 = 0.96, root mean square error = 10.02 Mg/ha and Willmott's index of agreement of 0.98. The model further validated using chi-squared and t-test. Results of models for calculating the aboveground biomass (AGB) were converted to C and CO2 using conversion factors. Average AGB, C and CO2 were 70.5, 35.26 and 130.89 Mg/ha, respectively. The synergistic use of optical and multi-frequency SAR data enhanced the AGB saturation threshold to about 150 Mg/ha for tropical deciduous mixed forests. Hence, the synergistic use of this data is suggested for large-scale AGB and C estimations for tropical forests. Optical remote sensing sensors are extensively used due to greater data availability despite their poor sensitivity toward forest parameters. In contrast, SAR signals are highly sensitive toward forest biophysical and structural parameters, providing a better alternative. Spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery is affected by the ionosphere, resulting in distortions of the SAR intensity, phase, and polarization. Although several methods have been proposed to mitigate the ionospheric phase delay of SAR interferometry, the application of them with full-polarimetric SAR interferometry is limited. Based on this background, Faraday rotation (FR)-based methods are used in this study to mitigate the ionospheric phase errors on full-polarimetric SAR interferometry. For a performance test of the selected method, L-band Advanced Land Observation Satellite (ALOS) Phase Array L-band SAR (PALSAR) full-polarimetric SAR images over high-latitude and low-latitude regions are processed. The result shows that most long-wavelength ionospheric phase errors are removed from the original phase after using the FR-based method, where standard deviations of the corrected result have decreased by almost a factor of eight times for the high-latitude region and 28 times for low-latitude region, compared to those of the original phase, demonstrating the efficiency of the method. This result proves that the FR-based method not only can mitigate the ionospheric effect on SAR interferometry, but also can map the high-spatial-resolution vertical total electronic content (VTEC) distribution. An assessment on the amount and spatial distribution of forest aboveground biomass (AGB) for the forests in Colombia was generated using in-situ national forest inventory data (IDEAM, 2018), in combination with multispectral optical data and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite imagery. ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 gamma-0 backscatter annual mosaics (2015–2017) provided by JAXA were normalised and corrected using previous ALOS PALSAR annual mosaics (2007–2010) as reference. A multi-temporal Landsat 7 & 8 composite over the whole of Colombia was used for the year 2016 ± 1. The national forest inventory in-situ plots used to train our model consisted of 5-subplots each and were collected during the period 2015–2017 in the main biomes of the country. A sample of permanent 1ha plots (PPMs) were also measured. Nationally developed allometries (Alvarez et al., 2012) were used to estimate AGB. A non-parametric random forests (RF) algorithm was used within a k-fold framework to retrieve AGB at 30 m spatial resolution for the whole of Colombia. The algorithm was trained using forest inventory plots and validated at plot (0.35 ha) and PPM level (1 ha). The accuracy assessment found coefficients of determination (R2) of 0.68 and 0.61, and relative root mean square errors (Rel. RMSE) of 49% and 34% at plot and at PPM level, respectively. The results showed that the average AGB for the country was 118.1 t ha−1 (45.6 t ha−1 for Caribe, 75.4 t ha−1 Andes, 122.5 t ha−1 Pacifico, 32.7 t ha−1 Orinoquia, and 200.5 t ha−1 for the Amazonia, regionally), and that the total carbon stocks for the country were 6.7 Pg C for the period 2015–2017. Background: A unique extreme ultraviolet (EUV-) scanner with a high numerical aperture (NA) of 0.55 was designed to enable printing of resolution lines with 8 nm half-pitch in a single exposure. The introduction of a central obscuration in the optics design reduces the angular load on the multilayer mirrors, enabling a high transmission and throughput. The central obscuration area has been minimized for best imaging, overlay, and transmission. Aim: The wavefront is only available in the non-obscured area. This raises the question of how to describe such a wavefront. Approach: We discuss the choice of fringe-Tatian basis functions to represent the wavefront for an obscured pupil. To make this choice, one needs to balance mathematical correctness while maintaining a simple and intuitive description. Results: We provide a detailed analysis for selecting basis functions that are adequate to describe measured wavefronts on the non-obscured part of the pupil. This statement is supported by imaging simulations. A fast and stable evaluation of the chosen basis functions is presented. An adapted definition of the wavefront root-mean-square deviation for these functions is proposed; it has the advantage of being simple and independent of the number of basis functions used. A large amount of information needs to be identified and produced during the process of promoting projects of interest. Thermal infrared (TIR) images are extensively used because they can provide information that cannot be extracted from visible images. In particular, TIR oblique images facilitate the acquisition of information of a building's facade that is challenging to obtain from a nadir image. When a TIR oblique image and the 3D information acquired from conventional visible nadir imagery are combined, a great synergy for identifying surface information can be created. However, it is an onerous task to match common points in the images. In this study, a robust matching method of image pairs combined with different wavelengths and geometries (i.e., visible nadir-looking vs. TIR oblique, and visible oblique vs. TIR nadir-looking) is proposed. Three main processes of phase congruency, histogram matching, and Image Matching by Affine Simulation (IMAS) were adjusted to accommodate the radiometric and geometric differences of matched image pairs. The method was applied to Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) images of building and non-building areas. The results were compared with frequently used matching techniques, such as scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT), speeded-up robust features (SURF), synthetic aperture radar–SIFT (SAR–SIFT), and Affine SIFT (ASIFT). The method outperforms other matching methods in root mean square error (RMSE) and matching performance (matched and not matched). The proposed method is believed to be a reliable solution for pinpointing surface information through image matching with different geometries obtained via TIR and visible sensors. Residual surface deformation resulting from abandoned mined-out areas can lead to severe damage to ground structures (e.g., buildings and infrastructure in mining areas) and the local ecological environment. Long-term monitoring and analyses of surface deformation characteristics of abandoned mined-out areas are significant for preventing potential disasters. In this study, a detailed field investigation first was conducted in Ying'an and Baoshan coal mines located in Jilin Province, China, to survey mining-induced disasters in the mining areas. Based on the 40 Sentinel-1A images acquired from 14 February 2017 to 17 May 2020, small baseline subset interferometry synthetic aperture radar (SBAS-InSAR) technology was employed to obtain the time-series residual surface deformation. Validation of the SBAS-derived results is performed by comparing with the results obtained via leveling measurements. The root mean square error (RMSE) between SBAS-derived and leveling measurements results was found to be 1.144 mm, reflecting a fairly good agreement. Furthermore, the ordinary Kriging interpolation approach was adopted to obtain information on the deformation across the entire area. The spatial–temporal evolution characteristics of the derived subsidence bowls in multiple mined-out areas were revealed. The deformation characteristics for the abandoned mined-out areas in different periods were not completely consistent. Finally, the potential mechanism underlying the inconsistency in the subsidence associated with underground coal exploitation is analyzed. The findings of this study can provide insights into local construction and ecological improvement as well as guidance for the prediction of deformation in abandoned mined-out areas.
