Purpose: This paper aims to provide a case study of complex conflict management within the arms race on the Korean Peninsula. Exploring the complex nexus of nuclear weapons, asymmetry and a qualitative arms race, the study explains how the arms race between Seoul and Pyongyang has promoted stability on the Korean Peninsula. Design/methodology/approach: Presenting the limits of arguments that the US security guarantee is the factor that saved the two Koreas from going to war again, this paper explores the utility of the inter-Korean arms race as a stabilizer that promotes indirect negotiations. While presenting Korean anomalies, this paper analyzes the three stages of the inter-Korean arms race – especially its nuclear weapons, its asymmetry and the nature of arms races – and provides extant explanations on the causes and consequences of the qualitative arms race. These key elements drive the states' strategic motives. Findings: Using the case of the inter-Korean qualitative arms race and US extended nuclear deterrence on the Korean Peninsula, the study shows the complexities of conflict management today. This paper identifies three contributing factors – US nuclear weapons, asymmetry and the qualitative characteristic of the arms race – to explain the enduring stability on the peninsula despite the arms race's intensification. The paper finds that although US nuclear-extended deterrence plays a critical role, it does not capture the full context of the ongoing, dynamic inter-Korean arms race; a prolonged arms race between the two Koreas has become a new regularity; the qualitative characteristic of the inter-Korean arms race, which is driven by technological advancement, contributes to stability in the arms race; and as the constant mismatch in priority technologies becomes more severe, the changes to the existing asymmetry could increase instability. Originality/value: This paper offers a diverse perspective to the literature on conflict management and captures the complexities of 21st-century conflict management. Through a thorough examination of the inter-Korean arms race, it brings readers' attention to the nested dynamics within the arms race and shows how an intensifying arms race can promote stability. Furthermore, the paper explains the implications for potential instability – fueled by the comprehensive mix of a dynamic qualitative arms race and the US extended nuclear deterrence – in the Indo-Pacific region. The genus Hexatoma Latreille, 1809 is a large group of aquatic crane flies, with almost 600 species worldwide. The largest subgenus is Eriocera Macquart, 1838, which includes all nine species known from the Korean Peninsula. Molecular methods were used to associate Hexatoma larvae with their putative adult species from South Korea. Mitochondrial Cytochrome c Oxidase Subunit I (COI) gene fragment sequences (DNA barcodes) of recently collected adults of H. (E.) gifuensis, H. (E.) ilwola, H. (E.) pernigrina, and H. (E.) pianigra were compared with twelve sequences of Hexatoma larvae. The larvae of H. (E.) pernigrina, H. (E.) pianigra, and H. (E.) gifuensis were associated with their putative adults. The larvae of H. (E.) gifuensis and H. (E.) pianigra and the larvae and pupae of H. (E.) pernigrina are described and illustrated. The larvae of two species not associated with any adult are described, and their COI gene fragment sequences (DNA barcodes) are presented. This paper presents the morphological characteristics suitable for distinguishing larval species. A key for the identification of larvae of the genus Hexatoma on the Korean Peninsula has been compiled. H (E.) sachalinensis is recorded from the Korean Peninsula for the first time. Our study is the first contribution to the Hexatoma larvae taxonomy using phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial COI fragment (DNA barcode) and one of the first attempts to reveal phylogenetic relationships between Hexatoma species using molecular markers. Hexatoma Latreille, 1809 is a large genus of short-palped crane flies with a worldwide distribution. Accounting for more than 60 percent of global species, 362 extant species occur in Asia. Prior to our study, Hexatoma crane flies on the Korean Peninsula (both the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea) had been studied for 90 years starting in 1930, but only three species had been recorded, with one of them being a misidentification. This study adds six species to the fauna of the Korean Peninsula, all of which belong to the subgenus H. (Eriocera) Macquart, 1838. General information on genus and subgenus morphological characters is presented in this paper, with a redescription of each species based on Korean specimens, as well as illustrations of both sexes, the elevation range, the period of activity, habitat information, general distribution, and a distribution map for the Korean Peninsula. Three species H. (E.) ilwola Podenas, sp. nov., H. (E.) pianigra Podenas, sp. nov. and H. (E.) serenensis Podenas, sp. nov. are described as new to science. Hexatoma (E.) lygropis (Alexander, 1920) is deleted from the Korean species list as a misidentification. Simple Summary: Four new species, Edaphus haenamensissp.n., E. odaesanensis sp.n., E. suyuensis sp.n., and E. ulsanensis sp.n., are described in the Korean Peninsula. Additional two species, E. koreanus and E. lederi, are redescribed, and the latter species is recorded for the first time from Korea. The cosmopolitan euaesthetine genus, Edaphus Motschulsky, 1857, with about 90 Palaearctic species, was formerly known by a single species, E. koreanus Puthz, 2011, of which 2 specimens were collected in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. In this paper, the knowledge of the Korean Edaphus fauna is expanded to include six species, including four described here based on a rich material collected in recent years. While fully utilizing the principles of international emergency management, the objective of this article was to evaluate the present local emergency management of the Gangwon province in relation to its future requirements, and ultimately, to arrive at the most effective emergency-management plan. In doing so, both reality-oriented and risk-oriented approaches were compared via four key players or stakeholders, namely the local governments, military forces, local industries, and semi-volunteers and households. Literature review and interviews with national experts were utilized as the methodology for this study. The contribution of this paper is valuable, because the case of the Gangwon province was examined, for the first time, using international criteria. The key finding is that for best practices, the Gangwon province has to change its reality-oriented approach to a risk-oriented approach. Furthermore, the evaluation of the Gangwon province's policies following international emergency-management examples may result to improvements on the non-linear dynamics of local emergency management and facilitate transformation toward a risk-oriented approach in neighboring countries. This paper explores the evolution of the policy agenda of the EU-South Korea strategic partnership, based on key pillars of cooperation: politics, security, and economics. In the political arena, the Framework Agreement has provided a major platform for promoting EU-Korea political dialogue and developing a common stance toward a shared global agenda. When it comes to security, the main agenda involves North Korea's missiles, nuclear program, and the challenge of nonproliferation; the two parties have coordinated sanctions against North Korea. South Korea has enacted a Crisis Management Participation Agreement (FPA) with the EU and begun to participate in the EU common security and defence policy. The changing security environment on the Korean Peninsula, as a consequence of recent inter-Korean and US-North Korea dialogues, may offer the EU new opportunities for constructive engagement. In the economic arena, the EU-Korea FTA has established solid trade and investment relations. While these pillars of the strategic partnership have led to stable and mature bilateral relations, both the EU and South Korea need to find new momentum for an enhanced partnership to deal with the ongoing challenge of global security instability and the backlash against the liberal international order. The EU-South Korea strategic partnership also needs a global agenda that covers climate change, technology, education, and culture. This study assesses the development of each pillar of the strategic partnership, addressing key challenges, tasks, and future diplomatic developments between the EU and South Korea. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate gender differences in the relationships between job demands, job control and distress with the moderation effects of family status (i.e. marriage and parenthood) in the patriarchal cultural context of Korea. Design/methodology/approach: The authors formulated hypotheses on the grounds of stress and role theories and tested them using a hierarchical regression analysis. A sample of 403 Korean employees (230 males; 173 females) was used for the analysis. Findings: Family status moderated the relationship between job demands and distress for both males and females, whereas family status significantly moderated the effect of job control on distress for only males. Regardless of gender, marriage and parenthood were associated with distress affected by job demands, while only males exhibited significant distress in interactions between family status and job control. Originality/value: This exploratory study is one of few that explicitly addresses the concepts of the job demands-control model dealing with the unique characteristics of demographic groups. By incorporating data from the single, the married and parents, this study identified applications of the conservation of resources and role theory for various family statuses in a non-Western culture. Particularly, this study is meaningful in that it highlighted the impacts of family roles on distress that can be observed in any culture, but is salient in a highly hierarchal, patriarchal and work-centered culture, like Korea. This paper conceptualizes the emerging detente within inter-Korean relations as evidence of tangible transformations within North Korea's domestic and foreign policy, establishing how this phenomenon represents a unique and conclusive opportunity for peace and engagement. It contextualizes the inter-Korean and Singapore summits as foundations for the detente, before expanding upon the nature of the detente through the contrasting objectives of North and South Korea, and the transitional nature of domestic affairs in North Korea. The article establishes the bona fide nature of North Korea's detente, as revealed by a direct connection between North Korea's international diplomatic gestures vis-av-vis transitional domestic circumstances; involving incremental economic modernization and political liberalization under a shift in focus within Kim Jong-un's Byungjin Line policy. This analysis departs from and orthodox Western interpretation of inter-Korean relations, providing a holistic analysis of inter-Korean affairs and North Korean domestic politics. This paper examines whether South Korea's official development assistance (ODA) has promoted foreign policy cooperation from its recipients. To this end, vote congruence between South Korea and its ODA recipients over important issues in the UN General Assembly is analyzed. The results show that, as the size of South Korea's ODA increases, its recipients are likely to vote alongside South Korea on issues important to South Korea, such as nuclear issues, human rights, and resolutions on human rights abuses in North Korea, in the UN General Assembly. Purpose: While today inter-Korean cooperation and the North Korean nuclear issues seem to be inseparable, the close linkage between these two aspects is a result of a specific policy implemented by South Korean governments in the last decade. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that this linkage has been ineffective in reducing the traditional security threat of the North Korean nuclear program, and counterproductive for inter-Korean cooperation. Design, Methodology, Approach: This article is based on non-traditional international relations and security studies and in particular on the theoretical approach of Securitization. It analyzes the design and implementation of inter-Korean policies over the last two decades. Findings: This study demonstrates that considering North Korean denuclearization as a pre-condition for inter-Korean cooperation significantly undermines the chances for improving inter-Korean relations. The main reason lies in the fact that the two issues are interrelated but different and that South Korea is not considered by North Korea as a relevant counterpart for the nuclear issue. Practical Implications: This article provides a useful and innovative explanation for the recent failures in inter-Korean cooperation. These findings will help policymakers in designing and implementing more effective inter-Korean policies. As student creativity is increasingly emphasized in English as a Foreign Language education, it is necessary to consider instructional techniques to encourage it. This study examines the effectiveness of two instructional techniques on creative writing performance of English as a Foreign Language students in a South Korean university. These techniques are variations of brainstorming known as mind mapping and SCAMPER. Survey data from the participants (n = 39) were analysed to determine which technique resulted in higher levels of perceived creative output (essays). Additionally, a creativity rubric was developed and used to assign analytic scores to the essays to examine the relative benefits of the two techniques for high and low creative ability students. Results show that SCAMPER produced statistically significantly higher levels of perceived creative output. The essays written using SCAMPER generally received higher creativity scores than those written using mind mapping, though this difference was not statistically significant. Two new species of the pseudoscorpion genus Pararoncus Chamberlin, 1938 are described from Korea. This paper aims to broaden knowledge on policy governance of cultural districts, particularly those utilizing artist communities for urban revitalization. With the rise of the cultural economy in post-industrial cities in South Korea, cultural strategies have become key components in almost every urban regeneration project. The tactic of encouraging groups of community artists to work and live in distressed neighborhoods has been regarded as a low-budget and easy-to-implement tool for urban revitalization. Over the past few years, however, these strategies have failed to meet expectations and have often resulted in conflicts between artists and the government. To understand the factors behind the strategies' positive and negative consequences, this paper examines three projects with different degrees of government intervention: the Totatoga project in Busan City, the Daein Art Market project in Gwangju City, and the Changdong Art Village project in Changwon City. The analysis focuses on the mode of government intervention in the relationships among the government, artists, intermediary agencies, and local citizens. By putting the mode of government intervention in the context of social relations of related players in the cultural districts, this paper tries to understand how similar policy schemes created different consequences. A new species of Chinese perch (Perciformes, Sinipercidae), †Coreoperca chosun, sp. nov., is described based on four specimens (mostly fragmentary and disarticulated) found in the freshwater Lower Miocene Geumgwangdong Formation in the vicinity of Pohang City, South Korea (N35°57′30.5, E129°26′57.3). Such characters of this fossil sinipercid as the serrated ventral margin of the preopercle, the third dorsal-fin spine being shorter than the fourth and fifth spines, the third to fifth neural spines inserted shallowly rather than deeply between the proximal dorsal-fin pterygiophores, the relatively strong supraneurals and relatively large scales indicate its attribution to the genus Coreoperca. However, its unique combination of characters clearly distinguishes †C. chosun, sp. nov. from both the extinct and extant members of the genus Coreoperca. This is the first fossil record of the family Sinipercidae in the Korean Peninsula, one of the earliest representatives of Coreoperca known to date, and the first described Neogene freshwater fish from South Korea. This article examines the nexus between human rights and security on the Korean Peninsula. The past policies toward North Korean human rights by South Korean governments were inconsistent and ineffectiveby being selective and subordinated to security policies. In this article, I suggest holistic and integrative approaches toward North Korean human rights. The holistic approach includes both political and civil rights and economic, social, and cultural rights as indivisible and interdependent. The integrative approach connects North Korean human rights to peace and security on the Korean Peninsula through denuclearization, economic engagement, and humanitarian aid. They would enable the South Korean government to devise more consistent and effective human rights policies by securing domestic and international support, increasing its coordination with a variety of actors, and sending a credible signal to the authoritarian regime in the North. This paper investigates the changes in the structure of the household expenditure on telecommunications services and its relationships with other existing expenditures in South Korea employing the average household monthly expenditure from 1998.Q1 to 2014.4Q. The linear approximate Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS) is implemented in both short-run and long-run models. The short-run relationship is estimated using a seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) with first differenced series of data, and the long-run relationship is examined through a Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). Both sets of empirical results suggest that the household demand for telecommunications services is income inelastic over the whole analysis period, and the absolute value of the own price elasticity noticeably increased in the period of 2007.Q1–2014.Q4. Additionally, the estimations from the VECM LA/AIDS model suggest that the relationship between telecommunications services and other existing goods/services such as public transportations, cultural services, books and private education had a complementary relationship in the early period of the Internet and mobile services. This paper examines the effect of trade openness and per capita GDP on the size of government for Turkey and South Korea by means of ARDL approach to co-integration. We use different proxies to measure the size of government because not all measures of government size are appropriate to be employed in the estimates. Among the three (four) different measures of government size of Korea (Turkey), only one for each country has a co-integrating relationship with openness and per capita GDP. Long run coefficients suggest that per capita GDP has a positive and significant effect on the government sizes for Turkey and Korea, implying the validity of the Wagner's law. However, while openness has a negative effect on government size for Turkey, it has a positive effect for Korea. On 15th November 2017, the Pohang earthquake (Mw 5.4) had strong ground shaking that caused severe liquefaction and lateral spreading across the Heunghae Basin, around Pohang city, South Korea. Such liquefaction is a rare phenomenon during small or moderate earthquakes (MW < 5.5). There are only a few examples around the globe, but more so in the Korean Peninsula. In this paper, we present the results of a systematic survey of the secondary ground effects—i.e., soil liquefaction and ground cracks—developed during the earthquake. Most of the liquefaction sites are clustered near the epicenter and close to the Heunghae fault. Based on the geology, tectonic setting, distribution, and clustering of the sand boils along the southern part of the Heunghae Basin, we propose a geological model, suggesting that the Heunghae fault may have acted as a barrier to the propagation of seismic waves. Other factors like the mountain basin effect and/or amplification of seismic waves by a blind thrust fault could play an important role. Liquefaction phenomenon associated with the 2017 Pohang earthquake emphasizes that there is an urgent need of liquefaction potential mapping for the Pohang city and other areas with a similar geological setting. In areas underlain by extensive unconsolidated basin fill sediments—where the records of past earthquakes are exiguous or indistinct and there is poor implementation of building codes—future earthquakes of similar or larger magnitude as the Pohang earthquake are likely to occur again. Traditionally, the Korean Peninsula has occupied an important place in Russia's foreign policy strategy, due both to its geographical proximity to Russia's Far Eastern borders and to its geopolitical role. The circumstances on the Korean Peninsula have a direct influence on the security of Russia's Far East and NorthEast Asia (NEA) as a whole, making the Peninsula naturally one of Russia's foreign policy priorities. Officially and unofficially, Russia has two underlying interests in the Korean Peninsula, as stated repeatedly by Russian officials. Firstly, Russia has no interest in seeing weapons of mass destruction appear anywhere in the world, least of all on its borders. Consequently, Russia has consistently taken the position that international nuclear non-proliferation should be preserved, including preventing the nuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. Secondly, Russia is worried about an outbreak of hostilities in Korea. There are reasons for this. Such a war would be a genuine catastrophe near Russia's borders, replete with radioactive contamination of the area and movement of refugees to the Russian Far East, and it would complicate severely the implementation of Russia's development strategy for its Far Eastern regions. Consequently, Moscow is, instead, interested in maintaining peace, stability and an atmosphere of cooperation on the Korean Peninsula and in NEA, which would provide an environment conducive to developing Russia's economy. Russia is interested more than anyone else in maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, and resolving the problems of the Peninsula, including the nuclear issue, by exclusively peaceful political and diplomatic means, whilst respecting the sovereignty and interests of all states involved. The Korean species of Tipula (Vestiplex) Bezzi, 1924 crane flies are taxonomically revised. Five species are recognized. Tipula (V.) coquillettiana Alexander, 1924, T. (V.) kuwayamai Alexander, 1921, T. (V.) tchukchi Alexander, 1934, and T. (V.) verecunda Alexander, 1924 are newly recorded from the Korean Peninsula, and T. (V.) serricauda Alexander, 1914 was previously recorded. The larva of T. (V.) serricauda is described and illustrated, and the larvae of the subgenus T. (Vestiplex) are divided into four groups based on spiracular lobe morphology. An identification key, redescriptions, and illustrations of Korean T. The intensity-duration (I-D) threshold is considered an effective indicator for landslides triggered by short-term high-intensity rainfall and long-term low-intensity rainfall. However, previous studies have not considered the influence of antecedent rainfall. Herein, we analyzed hourly rainfall data for 613 shallow landslides that occurred from 1963 to 2018 in South Korea to obtain rainfall thresholds and investigated the effect of antecedent rainfall conditions on threshold variations. The I-D and IMAP-D, which is normalized by dividing I by mean annual precipitation (MAP), thresholds were determined to be I = 10.40D–0.31 and IMAP = 0.006D–0.26 (4 ≤ D (h) ≤ 84), respectively, at the 2nd percentile level through quantile regression analysis. These thresholds were lower than other local thresholds (i.e., excluding global and regional thresholds), suggesting that the southern region of the Korean Peninsula was more susceptible to rainfall-induced landslides. Although the effective length of antecedent rainfall was not presented herein, the I-D threshold of landslide-triggering rainfall was confirmed to be low for the absolute and/or calibrated antecedent rainfalls greater than event cumulative rainfall at 5, 7, 10, and 20 days prior to the event. Such differences in I can be greater at shorter durations; however, these differences gradually decrease as D increases, suggesting that they lose their effect as soil water content increases. The results of the current study can improve the understanding of the effect of antecedent rainfall conditions on landslide occurrence and should be further tested with respect to the hydrologic response of hillslopes by considering regional climate and local site conditions. South Korea forms the Korean Peninsula and is considered to be tectonically more stable than the other regions of Eastern Asia. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) sites installed in the country contribute to geoscientific studies on contemporary deformation, strain pattern, and current kinematics of tectonic blocks. In the current study, we used long-term GNSS measurements (from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2018) to study block-wise geodetic deformation and strain pattern of the country, including the co-seismic effect of the 2011 Tohoku-Oki (TO) Earthquake. Measured velocities of GNSS sites are modelled via exponential smoothing method to analyse the GNSS time-series and obtain the secular tectonic crustal deformation. The analysis of strain pattern and vertical displacements indicates that extensional deformation followed compressional deformation from the northern Korean blocks to the southern Korean blocks. Finally, we examined the angular velocity and pole of rotation of the South Korean blocks using pre-seismic and post-seismic displacements of the GNSS sites. The results indicate that the angular velocity of the northern blocks was lower, while the southern block velocity is higher after the TO earthquake. The Korean Peninsula is home to intermittent conflict and is an ongoing critical flashpoint. It is an entrenched, long‐standing international problem—exactly what international commissions are designed to address. An international commission is an ad hoc transnational investigative mechanism, which dependent upon its sponsors and constitution can be thought of as either a temporary intergovernmental organization or nongovernmental organization (NGO). They are routinely led by senior, respected politicians or leaders and include a range of similarly respected commissioners, including government, military, academic, and NGO representatives. Their end goal is the production of a comprehensive and definitive report that will serve as a reference point for future diplomatic initiatives. Their strength lies in the power of ideas—the capacity to transform the way we think about entrenched, long‐standing international problems. Stimulated by studies on South Korean students’ early and later-on study abroad and Japanese companies’ practice of hiring monolingual college students, the present literature-based discussion advances the knowledge of commonalities and distinctiveness between the two nations that manifest in either a textbook-case or a non-linear relationship between people's investment in English study during schooling and their marketability in the real world. For example, while equally known for their nationwide ‘education/English craze’ and global economies, the two East Asian neighbours differ significantly in their upper/middle-class citizens’ (non)practice of overseas educational migration and leading companies’ (non)hiring of overseas-educated youth with language skills. The discussion begs future research questions as to (1) the coexistence between neo-liberal discourse about global talents’ career success and the pervasiveness of social inequalities (e.g. gender discrimination at work); (2) the location of applied linguistics researchers and L2 practitioners in social institutions that (are pressured to) balance the neo-liberalism-driven production of global human resources and the transmission of the dominant values of social inequalities; (3) the potentiality of scholarly discussion that entails little or no definition of (non)professional, (un)skilled workers with(out) global language skills. It is a widely debated but poorly studied phenomenon observed especially among younger South Korean women and, more seldomly, among men. This article will provide a preliminary ethnographic description of aegyo based on the fieldwork performed in Seoul, Incheon and Seongnam in 2015 and 2016, supported by the results of two online questionnaires from early 2016. The article tackles three separate dimensions. First, it briefly relates aegyo to comparable articulations of performed winsomeness in the broader East Asian context. Second, it relates it to the elements of Korean traditional or indigenous knowledge. Third, it explores the meaning of these performances with regards to contemporary figurations of femininity and the local politics of gender, with aegyo seen as a marked but normalised multidirectional process between various social actors. Despite the ties between politics and economics, little attention has been given to how economic development affects foreign policy. To fill the gap in the literature, Heo and Roehrig developed a theoretical framework, linking economic development and foreign relations. We refine the theory and name it development power theory, which is based on the logic that economic development influences a country's foreign policy in three broad directions: (i) it encourages a transition to democracy that leads to elite changes and foreign‐policy modification; (ii) it provides more resources and a larger set of tools to be used to pursue a broader set of national interests; and (iii) it enhances pride and ambition among state leaders and the public, resulting in a stronger military and a greater role in international affairs. Official film co-production treaties are designed by policymakers to stimulate a range of collaborations, technology transfers, and joint funding initiatives in the industry. Since July 2004, the Chinese government has used this top-down approach to cultural diplomacy as a symbolic tool for advancing Chinese cinema and opening the domestic market to a host of willing international partners. Korean filmmakers in particular have exploited the (often informal) opportunities presented, engaging in vigorous cooperation with Chinese colleagues across all sectors of the production ecosystem. The continuing flow of Chinese–Korean transnational film encounters, underpinned by influential personal networks, resulted in the signing of a formal China–Korea co-production agreement in July 2014. To examine the efficacy of this policy intervention, this article analyzes the diversity of film collaboration that preceded this agreement and its impact on transnational filmmaking in China. It investigates the strategies used in the remaking of Korean auteur Lee Man Hee’s 1966 melodramaLate Autumn(2010), technical innovation in the VFX-heavyMr. Go(2013), and the making of mega-distributor CJ E&M’s romance dramaA Wedding Invitation(2013) to illustrate how Korean firms and practitioners are expanding the commercial entertainment boundaries of Chinese cinema. In so doing, it also reveals how Chinese film companies are enabling the Korean film industry to internationalize its approach to overseas markets beyond the kind of conspicuous policy initiatives tailored for a globalized cultural economy. Religion in Korea has been shaped by its followers to a degree, but the role of religion in Korea has been largely unexamined. This study examines the role of religion and the incorporation of religious beliefs and institutions in the field of disaster management. In doing so, the study examines how three religions--Christianity, Buddhism, and Confucianism--operate in Korea, in particular in terms of both care-oriented management and mitigation-oriented management approaches. While utilizing descriptive research as a methodology, policy measures have been suggested with the support of theological perspectives. Despite some difficulties in making a generalization, the major finding is that religion has a role to play in supplementing care-oriented management, with mitigation-oriented management approaches, by better grasping the nature of a disaster and its effective management while responding to regional culture. In addition, the Ministry of Public Safety and Security, local governments, and other government institutions must play new roles in incorporating religion in disaster management. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of women in leadership in Korea and to identify challenges and opportunities that they face in the process of balancing work and family life and developing leadership as women in the uniquely challenging Korean workplace where they face organizational and cultural constraints. Critical to this investigation was the understanding of concepts frequently represented in the previous literature about women in leadership: work–family life balance, women’s leadership development, and the cultural context. In-depth interviews were conducted with 18 women leaders selected through a purposeful and snowball sampling method. A thematic analysis of the interview data generated six themes including: (a) commitment to work, (b) struggles for a balance, (c) defining success, (d) gender identity, (e) being a role model, and (f) need for support. Korean unification could come about suddenly. As it was impossible to predict the East German and Soviet collapse at the end of the Cold War and the German unification that followed, it is impossible to predict when unification will occur on the Korean Peninsula other than to say it could happen, perhaps even within a decade. There is a great danger of unification occurring when South Korea and other neighboring states are not ready. The consequences of a poorly planned regional response to Korean unification, particularly in a scenario where North Korean is instable, are potentially calamitous. Preemptive diplomacy--strong and forthright cooperation among the great powers, particularly between the United States, South Korea, China, and Japan--will be essential to mitigate the negative consequences of unification and ensure that it winds up benefitting the entire region. It is imperative that such efforts to smooth the path towards Korean unification begin today. Unless South Korea can assure all regional stakeholders to play a constructive role in unification, the process could become more messy, protracted, and costly than it would be otherwise. By contrast, if South Korea can succeed today in getting the support of its neighbors for a variety of unification scenarios, it can ensure that the creation of a unified Korean state, while still expensive, will be as smooth as possible under extremely challenging circumstances. The beneficiaries under such a scenario will be not only the people of the Korean Peninsula, but also the people of the neighboring states and indeed the people of Asia and the world. Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of CT-P13 (Remsima®) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in South Korea. Methods: This post-marketing study included patients with active moderate-to-severe Crohn’s disease (CD), fistulizing CD (FCD), or moderate-to-severe ulcerative colitis (UC) treated with CT-P13 and followed for 30 weeks. Assessments included treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) and disease-specific clinical response and remission. Results: No unexpected TEAEs were observed in the 173 patients recruited to date. TEAEs occurred in 18.1, 16.7, and 26.9% of CD, FCD, and UC patients, respectively. Treatment-related TEAEs occurred in 10% of patients and were mostly mild-moderate in severity. There were five serious TEAEs (two infusion-related reactions, two infections, one abdominal pain) and no cases of malignancy, pneumonia, or death. Positive outcomes for response/remission were reported regardless of whether patients had received prior infliximab or not. Conclusion: CT-P13 was well tolerated and efficacious in patients with IBD. We investigated cladoceran fauna from 71 study areas in South Korea. Sixty-two taxa were found, of which there were 30 planktonic and 25 littoral-benthic cladoceran species. In the present study, taxa of cladocera were identified by biographical traits. Species endemic to the Far East were found in the northernmost areas of South Korea, whereas Palearctic species were found in the southernmost areas. Generally, coexistence of cladoceran species in northern and southern areas was observed, implying possible faunistic complexes of cladocera in various areas of South Korea. We believe that further studies conducted in different habitats will greatly expand our knowledge of the biodiversity of cladocera in South Korea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study summarizes the taxonomic notes and distribution of 13 taxa of the genus Scenedesmus (Chlorophyceae) collected from several swamps, reservoirs, and rivers throughout South Korea from 2012 to 2014. In this study, light microscopy images of all 13 taxa are presented and briefly discussed with regard to their taxonomy, distribution, and ecology and environmental factors of occurrence sites. All 3 subgenera (subgenus Scenedesmus 1 taxon; subgenus Acutodesmus 2 taxa; subgenus Desmodesmus 10 taxa) are newly described in Korean freshwater algal flora: S. linearis, S. acuminatus var. elongatus, S. acuminatus var. tetradesmoides, S. carinatus, S. denticulatus var. disciformis, S. gutwinskii var. heterospina, S. helveticus f. bicaudatus, S. lefevrei, S. oahuensis var. clathratus f. longiclathratus, S. oahuensis var. clathratus, S. pannonicus, S. polydenticulatus, and S. tenuispina. Why has Korean migration policy been ethnicized? This research mainly aims to explain ethnic preference in Korea's immigration policy through the lens of Korean nationalism. The influx of ethnic Koreans in China (or Joseonjok) since the early 1990s has created a new dilemma for the South Korean government, which has long claimed to be the only legitimate polity of the Korean nation. The discrepancy between the legal citizenship and ethnicity of the Korean- Chinese workers in Korean society has forced the Korean state to redefine both legal and discursive national boundaries. An institution is often considered to be a stable, taken-for-granted ‘being’. The consequence is that agency is primarily associated with the rather exceptional creation or disruption of a relatively stable structure. In this article, we suggest an alternative ontology for understanding an institution as something unstable and always ‘becoming’. This opens a range of new and distinct opportunities for theorizing and researching institutional work involved in the everyday practice of managing institutional complexity. It allows us, in this study, to contribute with a new form of agency in terms of the continuous, active work of managing novel contradictions. Further, it induces us to take a more fine-grained look at the accompanying dynamics of work, in addition to work itself, whereby we provide a novel way of accounting for whether work effort is amplifying or subsiding, and whether it is likely to result in greater or lesser volatility within – on the surface – an otherwise seemingly stable institution. The argumentation is supported by an ethnographic field study of the work of managing novel contradictions within a single South Korean credit card company in the aftermath of the Asian economic crisis in 1997. Diplomatic relations between South Korea and Israel were formed only in 1962. Furthermore, as the two countries from both ends of the continent cooperated in various areas during the 1960s and 1970s, relations were becoming more complicated and even officially rather cool in light of Korea’s evolving relations with the Arab world. Against this backdrop, and based on the reading of contemporaneous Israeli press, the study argues that culture mattered very much in the early stages of the relations. Cultural contacts between Koreans and Israelis started well before the establishment of full diplomatic relations, and cultural diplomacy played a significant role in maintaining them in the decades that followed. Like today, both parties often emphasized the cultural and historical affinities between the two peoples, and in the process, the Israeli public was exposed to early glimpses into Korean culture while images of Korea and its people were created as well. Rainfall events are known to be driven by various synoptic disturbances or dominant processes in the atmosphere. In spite of the diverse atmospheric contributions, the assumption of homogeneity is commonly adopted when a hydrological frequency analysis is conducted. This study examines how the dominant processes, particularly the landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs) and non-TC events, have various effects to the characteristics of rainfall in South Korea. With rainfall data from the fifty-nine weather stations spread across the country, the multiple contributions of the TC and non-TC rainfall to the relative amount of rainfall, duration, intensity and maximum rainfall, on a seasonal and monthly scale, are first explored in this study. For the second objective, suitable probability distributions for the TC and non-TC time series are identified potentially for a synthetic analysis. Our results indicate that TCs cause a heterogeneous spatial distribution in the rainfall characteristics over the gauge networks particularly in the southern and eastern coastal areas. Some gauges in these areas attribute a significant portion of their amount and annual maximum rainfall to landfalling TCs. The results also show that the Pearson Type III distribution best represents the non-TC wet-day series, while the TC wet-day series can be represented by various distributions including the Weibull and Gamma distributions. From the analysis, we present how the characteristics of TCs differ from non-TCs with the emphasis on the need to consider their individual effects when conducting synthetic analyses.
