Search

History education in many parts of the world is increasingly integrating the practices and sources of oral history. This rapprochement between the field of history education and the field of oral history presents an opportunity to allow students to engage with and develop the particular ways of thinking used by oral history practitioners and theorists. This study investigates how ‘oral historical thinking’ might be captured in a framework designed for educators, much like the various existing models of historical thinking, to support secondary students to analyse and interpret audiovisual interview sources in a way that emulates experts in the field. The study presents a prototypical ‘oral historical thinking framework’ and explores its possible applications to classroom teaching.

In response to the growing need for more relevant school history, the notion of historical consciousness has come to represent a way to help students understand the links between past, present, and future. However, translating the construct into practice in an ongoing puzzle in the field. Recently, efforts have been made to operationalize historical consciousness via a competency-based approach, but this is arguably problematic, because its proponents view historical consciousness as a hermeneutic quest for meaning yet operationalize it as a set path of mental processing. This article explores a different approach based on meaning-making practice. It does so through an extensive review and synthesis of the relevant literature, and based on the results, it suggests operationalizing historical consciousness through negotiating the presence of the past, inquiring about the past with the help of disciplinary and everyday habits of mind, and building a sense of historical being.

“Hexagon” is an innovative method for the Bulgarian educational system, aimed at developing the logical thinking and creative abilities of students. It not only updates or develops content-based learning material, but also its systematic application in lessons increases the ability to perceive. It allows to move from passive to active form of learning that builds sustainable cognitive interests in the subject of History and Civilizations.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to ascertain perspectives from pre-service and in-service elementary teachers about challenges they face when teaching social studies, and how their participation in a content-based professional development opportunity can support their preparedness for social studies instruction. Five speakers who were experts in topics such as Native American history, historical preservation, women's history and the Constitution were featured at this workshop.Design/methodology/approachCase study methodology with both descriptive and explanatory data collection and analysis methods, which were inclusive of surveys and focus group sessions, was implemented. The National Council for the Social Studies (2017) Powerful and Authentic Social Studies framework was applied in order to examine whether elementary in-service and pre-service teachers participation in this content-focused professional development impacted their preparedness to teach social studies.FindingsMajor findings show that content-specific professional development can support pre-service and in-service elementary teachers' preparation to teach social studies through analysis of historical topics and contemporary issues, as well as mitigate challenges with regard to limited time dedicated to social studies instruction.Originality/valueIn light of the Senate's debate on passing the Educating for Democracy Act concerning funding for civics and history education, the originality of this study highlights the continued need for scholarship on how partnerships between colleges of education, school districts and local educational agencies to provide content-focused professional development can support elementary teachers' ambitious social studies instruction, which can foster greater understandings of historical content and civic participation in democratic society.

History education in Ghana has been situated within the pre-colonial, colonial and postcolonial trajectories and debates. Whereas there is a conscious effort by history teacher associations, academics and other interest groups to advance and develop the teaching of the subject at different levels of the educational system in Ghana, little attention has been paid to how the textbooks have conceptualised the cultural, ethnic and indigenous histories with their attendant differences and how they have affected or complicated narratives in the postcolonial setting of Ghana. Essentially, this contribution highlights how historical themes on empire, colonisation, decolonisation and the Commonwealth, and associated events, are explored in historiography and in the curricula of Ghana. This involves an examination of the dynamic relationship between political traditions, curriculum, historiography, and scholarship at university level. Overall, the paper highlights the political contexts that have shaped the various stages and manifestations of the history curriculum as it concerns British influence, decolonisation, independence and postcolonialism in Ghana before, during and after the development of the Nkrumahist and Danquah-Busia traditions.

This research seeks to evaluate the degree of inclusion of the gender perspective and the promotion of education in and for equality in the historical narratives of students in Chilean Secondary Education (n = 105). The study focuses on the analysis of the discursive-narrative mechanisms employed by the students and, in particular, of their representations of gender relations. To this end, the place given to men and women in past and present societies is analysed in the narratives generated by the students (n = 780). A mixed methodology is applied, combining quantitative (descriptive and inferential) and qualitative analyses of the manifest content. The results obtained report the persistence of stereotypical, exclusionary and androcentric perspectives, evidenced in hegemonic gender attributions and in the maintenance of the sex/gender system. These data confirm the need to implement specific teacher training programmes aimed at the acquisition of critical competences and the effective inclusion of the gender perspective in history education.

Existing studies history education in Japanese colonial period were mainly conducted on the basis of history education courses and textbook analysis. Of course, the impact of history education courses and textbooks is also significant for history education. However, it is difficult to discuss history education at that time except for teachers and students who teach and learn in actual classes. In this paper, we are going to look into practices of elementary history lesson through history teacher Evi Michitaka"s a teaching guide and teaching book. While Evi Michitaka worked as an instructor at Gyeongseong Normal School, he actively published 37 articles in the magazine of 『Education Research in Joseon』, including articles on history education, teaching guidelines, teaching materials, and teaching points. According to the result analyzing his writings, the purpose of his history education is to strengthen the ideology of the Japanese emperor, which was related to the fusion of Japan, Joseon and ideological education. The article is a review of the main theoretical discussions of the international scientific conference on history didactics, which was organized at the University of Graz (Austria) at the end of 2020. The results of the conference indicate the presence of transformational processes taking place in history didactics. This is true both in relation to its basic concepts (historical consciousness, historical thinking, historical culture) and the methods of teaching history. The main trends of this transformation can be called the central role of issues of intercultural dialogue and cognition in history lessons, the comprehensive use of the digital environment in teaching history, the migration focus of history education and the widespread dissemination of ethical issues, the history of everyday life in history lessons. It was noted that this aspects are correlated with the development trends of modern memory studies, which gives hope for further correlation and mutual enrichment of the two discourses. The purpose of this study was to obtain information about the learning process carried out by history teachers both from graduates of history education, as well as from history teachers who were not from historical education. The study took place from January to May 2018. The teacher who was the object of the study was a history teacher of SMAN 27 Jakarta, who had four people, consisting of three people who were graduates of history education, and one teacher who was not a graduate of education history. This research was conducted in class X at SMAN 27 JAKARTA. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method. Use of this method to get the actual situation in the school and describe the results of the study. Data collection techniques used through observation, interviews, and documentation. Informants in this study were Principals, Teachers, and Students at SMAN 27 Jakarta. In this study, it can be concluded from the results of the study that the professional competence of teachers who are graduates of history is better than the professional competencies of teachers who are not historical education graduates. Abstrak Tujuan penelitian ini untuk memperoleh informasi tentang proses pembelajaran yang dilakukan oleh guru sejarah baik dari yang berasal lulusan dari pendidikan sejarah, maupun dari guru sejarah yang bukan berasal dari pendidikan sejarah. Penelitian ini berlangsung dari bulan Januari sampai dengan bulan Mei 2018. Guru yang menjadi objek penelitian adalah guru sejarah SMAN 27 Jakarta yang berjumalah empat orang, yang terdiri dari tiga orang yang merupakan lulusan dari pendidikan sejarah, dan satu orang guru yang merupakan bukan lulusan dari pedidikan sejarah. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada kelas X di SMAN 27 JAKARTA. Adapun metode yang digunanakan dalam Penelitian ini yaitu metode kualitatif deskriptif. Penggunaan metode ini untuk mendapatkan keadaan yang sebenarnya disekolah dan dideskripsikan hasil penelitian. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan melalui obsevasi, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Informan dalam penelitian ini adalah Kepala Sekolah, Guru dan Siswa di SMAN 27 Jakarta. Pada penelitian ini didapat disimpulkan dari hasil penelitian bahwa kompetensi profesional guru yang merupakan lulusan sejarah lebih baik dari pada kompetensi profsional guru yang bukan lulusan pendidikan sejarah.

Historical consciousness is regarded as an important means to stimulate moral citizens through history education. This article conceptually examines the moral dimension associated with historical consciousness by revisiting the paradigm wars between natural science based on positivism and human and social sciences during the 1960s–1990s as expressed through the voice of Gadamer. More specifically, the article explores: (1) the moral arguments that Gadamer put forward for introducing historical consciousness and (2) the epistemological and ontological building blocks for approaching morality in history education that his arguments brought to the fore. In general, moral consciousness in relation to historical consciousness draws attention to: (a) people’s life conditions, (b) that moral reasoning and practice are influenced by feelings and reason, (c) that reflections on past events can help to interpret our ways of being towards others in the present and future, (d) that a plurality of people, thoughts and history are important to acknowledge and (e) that every person is part of creating history and responsible for weaving the past/present/future web in ways that acknowledge others.

In this essay, Chung-Hin Kevin Ho, a history education university student in Hong Kong, narrates his search for civic identity. Composed through a process of critical and reflective dialogue with Hayes Tang, the essay describes the tension between Chung-Hin’s Chinese ethnic and cultural identity and the democratic values held by Hong Kongers. As a student, he and his peers had to navigate these competing conceptions of identity in their coursework and examinations. The youth of Hong Kong, including Chung-Hin, have protested against the Chinese government, and have fought to protect the values of Hong Kong. As a future educator, Chung-Hin has advice for the government administrations of both Hong Kong and China: work with Hong Kongers to help them “build their own house.” Chung-Hin argues that if Hong Kong is to become closer to China, it cannot be done through force or propaganda. Further, Chung-Hin contends that education initiatives that change the history curriculum of Hong Kong schools is not enough to bring the youth of the city to heel. Chung-Hin’s experiences, and his own understanding of history education in Hong Kong, have helped him see that the values of Hong Kongers need to be respected if there is any hope of gaining their trust and acceptance. In this timely essay, Chung-Hin highlights how government policies and historical legacies have shaped his personal experience and educational trajectory in Hong Kong, as well as the other students who are a part of the largest youth protest movement in recent memory.

This study aims to develop teaching materials in the form of digital ebook by integrating local historical material on the Struggle of the Lampung People's Army at the State University in Lampung Province. The method used in this research is the development research (R&D) method. The stages of this research include the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The subjects in this study consisted of two material validators, two media validators, 48 students of semester VII students, one of whom was a lecturer in history education. The results of this development research show that digital history-based teaching materials (ebooks) based on local people's struggles in Lampung are proven to be valid based on the assessment of material experts and media experts. Based on the results of small group trials, limited group trials and large group trials show that digital history-based teaching materials based on local history of the struggle of the Lampung people's army proven to be effective and in accordance with needs analysis.

This article aims to relate translations on the issues of competence in curriculum studies to history education studies. ‘Key competencies in history’ is the fruit of the endeavor to embrace the prospect of the ‘2015 National Curriculum’ into history education. But there are some critiques saying that it is not appropriate to represent the essence of history subject to teachers and students. Why ‘key competencies in history’ could not be a main tool to account for history learning and teaching? I try to find answers in two aspects. First, the school history is abundant in contents and knowledge. It is a challenge to make knowledge in harmony with thinking or skill in history education. When competence coming into history curriculum, similar problems can occur in spite of differences between competence and thinking or skill. Second, the concept of competence is still incomplete and developing. Originating in vocational education and training, competence has not yet optimized to school curriculum. Especially it is fragile in questions of the purpose of education. Examining the concept of competence in ideal type, I try to consider how it can evolve corresponding with history subject and how history education can find the way to be in balance with the concept of curriculum, competence.

Many history education scholars argue that high school and college history students should not just learn content—information about “what happened” in the past—but also learn how to “do” history. Thus, students should hone various skills to become more mature historical thinkers, researchers, and writers. One such skill is what might be called “historiographical thinking,” which (among other capacities) involves the ability to grasp, compare, and assess competing historical interpretations of a given topic. This article offers theoretical justification for teaching historiographical thinking in survey courses, and then discusses a multi-day lesson built around two competing explanations of purported societal collapse on Rapa Nui (Easter Island). In this lesson, students practice deconstructing competing arguments, identifying key points of disagreement between opposing perspectives, and determining which interpretation is most compelling. In particular, the lesson emphasizes the importance of identifying an author’s agenda, and how a scholar’s underlying motives might compromise the reliability of their findings. Thus, this article offers a practical, concrete example of how to teach historiographical thinking in the high school and college classroom.
