Background: The purpose of this study was to quantify how much of the burden of visual impairment (VI) and unmet need in Talagang, identified by Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) survey data, has been addressed by Community Eye Health (CEH) programme efforts. Methods: A RAAB survey was carried out in November 2018, with 2,824 participants in Talagang Tehsil, Punjab, Pakistan, aged 50 and over. Census data were used to extrapolate survey data to the population. Alongside this, a CEH programme was launched, consisting of community eye screening, and onward referral to rural health centres, secondary or tertiary ophthalmological services, as required. This health intervention aimed to address the eye care needs surfaced by the initial survey. From 2018 to 2022, 30,383 people aged 50 or over were screened; 14,054 needed referral to further steps of the treatment pathway and more detailed data collection. Programme data were compared to estimates of population unmet needs. Main outcome measures were prevalence of VI, and proportion of need met by CEH Programme, by cause and level of VI. Results: Among those aged 50 and over, 51.0% had VI in at least one eye. The leading causes were cataract (46.2%) and uncorrected refractive error (URE) (25.0%). In its first four years, the programme reached an estimated 18.3% of the unmet need from cataract, and 21.1% of URE, equally in both men and women. Conclusions: Robustly collected survey and programme data can improve eye health planning, monitoring and evaluation, address inequities, and quantify the resources required for improving eye health. Objective To assess how the returns on investment from correcting refractive errors and cataracts in low- and middle-income countries compare with the returns from other global development interventions. Methods We adopted two complementary approaches to estimate benefit-cost ratios from eye health investment. First, we systematically searched PubMed® and Web of Science™ on 14 August 2023 for studies conducted in low-and-middle-income countries, which have measured welfare impacts associated with correcting refractive errors and cataracts. Using benefit-cost analysis, we compared these impacts to costs. Second, we employed an economic modelling analysis to estimate benefit-cost ratios from eye health investments in India. We compared the returns from eye health to returns in other domains across global health and development. Findings We identified 21 studies from 10 countries. Thirteen outcomes highlighted impacts from refractive error correction for school students. From the systematic review, we used 17 out of 33 outcomes for benefit-cost analyses, with the median benefit-cost ratio being 36. The economic modelling approach for India generated benefit-cost ratios ranging from 28 for vision centres to 42 for school eye screening, with an aggregate ratio of 31. Comparing our findings to the typical investment in global development shows that eye health investment returns six times more benefits (median benefit-cost ratio: 36 vs 6). Conclusion Eye health investments provide economic benefits with varying degrees based on the intervention type and location. Purpose: To survey paediatric eye care providers to identify current patterns of prescribing for hyperopia. Methods: Paediatric eye care providers were invited, via email, to participate in a survey to evaluate current age‐based refractive error prescribing practices. Questions were designed to determine which factors may influence the survey participant's prescribing pattern (e.g., patient's age, magnitude of hyperopia, patient's symptoms, heterophoria and stereopsis) and if the providers were to prescribe, how much hyperopic correction would they prescribe (e.g., full or partial prescription). The response distributions by profession (optometry and ophthalmology) were compared using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov cumulative distribution function test. Results: Responses were submitted by 738 participants regarding how they prescribe for their hyperopic patients. Most providers within each profession considered similar clinical factors when prescribing. The percentages of optometrists and ophthalmologists who reported considering the factor often differed significantly. Factors considered similarly by both optometrists and ophthalmologists were the presence of symptoms (98.0%, p = 0.14), presence of astigmatism and/or anisometropia (97.5%, p = 0.06) and the possibility of teasing (8.3%, p = 0.49). A wide range of prescribing was observed within each profession, with some providers reporting that they would prescribe for low levels of hyperopia while others reported that they would never prescribe. When prescribing for bilateral hyperopia in children with age‐normal visual acuity and no manifest deviation or symptoms, the threshold for prescribing decreased with age for both professions, with ophthalmologists typically prescribing 1.5–2 D less than optometrists. The threshold for prescribing also decreased for both optometrists and ophthalmologists when children had associated clinical factors (e.g., esophoria or reduced near visual function). Optometrists and ophthalmologists most commonly prescribed based on cycloplegic refraction, although optometrists most commonly prescribed based on both the manifest and cycloplegic refraction for children ≥7 years. Purpose: Early detection of sight-threatening disorders by technological applications like teleophthalmology and prompt treatment can help decrease visual impairment. This study evaluated the role of teleophthalmology in underserved rural areas along with cost-saving estimates for the end user. Methods: A prospective, observational, cross-sectional hospital-based study was conducted over 3 months. First 1000 teleconsultations were included. None of the patients denied providing informed consent. The patients were consulted at the eight vision centers and three satellite centers of the hospital in the nearby rural and tribal regions closer to their residential places. These vision and satellite centers were connected to the base hospital like a hub and spoke model with a teleophthalmology network. Results: Cataract (n = 301, 30.1%) and refractive error (n = 290, 29%) were the most common diagnosis. 42.1% of patients were referred to base hospital for further evaluation. Thus, a total of 57.9% of patients were not required to visit the base hospital for initial consultation, saving time and money. Furthermore, 15.1% of patients were provided medical treatment at the vision center and satellite center, which helped in making teleophthalmology cost-saving for the patients. An average of Rs. 621/- were saved per patient for the community in our study. Conclusion: Networked teleophthalmology model can be an affordable and feasible tool for providing eye care delivery services in rural and tribal regions of Gujarat and the whole country, especially for the end user. Background: Improper refractive correction can be harmful to eye health, aggravating the burden of vision impairment. During most optometry clinical consultations, practitioner-patient interactions play a key role. Maybe it is feasible for patients themselves to do something to get high-quality optometry. But the present empirical research on the quality improvement of eye care needs to be strengthened. The study aims to test the effect of the brief verbal intervention (BVI) through patients on the quality of optometry service. Methods: This study will take unannounced standardized patient (USP) with refractive error as the core research tool, both in measurement and intervention. The USP case and the checklist will be developed through a standard protocol and assessed for validity and reliability before its full use. USP will be trained to provide standardized responses during optical visits and receive baseline refraction by the skilled study optometrist who will be recruited within each site. A multi-arm parallel-group randomized trial will be used, with one common control and three intervention groups. The study will be performed in four cities, Guangzhou and three cities in Inner Mongolia, China. A total of 480 optometry service providers (OSPs) will be stratified and randomly selected and divided into four groups. The common control group will receive USP usual visits (without intervention), and three intervention groups will separately receive USP visits with three kinds of BVI on the patient side. A detailed outcome evaluation will include the optometry accuracy, optometry process, patient satisfaction, cost information and service time. Descriptive analysis will be performed for the survey results, and the difference in outcomes between interventions and control providers will be compared and statistically tested using generalized linear models (GLMs). Discussion: This research will help policymakers understand the current situation and influencing factors of refractive error care quality, and then implement precise policies; at the same time, explore short and easy interventions for patients to improve the quality of optometry service. Parents and school staff represent an essential component of the success of the Eyemobile as they are responsible for arranging exam appointments, completing consent forms, and encouraging spectacle wear and are thus key to establishing and maintaining children's eye care. Homeless populations have lower health indicators, including in eye care. Few data exist on the levels and causes of visual impairment in Canadian homeless populations, and none in Montreal. This study aims to characterise the causes and levels of visual impairment, as well as eye care services utilisation among the Montreal homeless. Using random sampling, five homeless shelters were selected. In each shelter, 20 participants were randomly selected. After obtaining informed consent, participants completed an ocular examination, which included: presenting visual acuity (pinhole as needed), intraocular pressure, confrontation visual field, dilated fundus examination, post-dilation autorefraction and questionnaire on social determinants of health. A total of 95 participants were examined, of which 97.9% were male. The median age was 49 years old (interquartile range 38–56.5). The age-adjusted prevalence of visual impairment (presenting visual acuity <6/12) was 23.6% (95% CI 15.1–32.9) compared to 6.0% in the Canadian population (Z = 77.9, p < 0.0001). With pinhole correction, the prevalence of visual impairment dropped to 5.8% (95% CI 1.7–11.8). Prevalence was 8.2% (95% CI 3.7–15.9) for cataracts, 11.4% (95% CI 5.9–19.7) for glaucoma or suspects and 4.7% (95% CI 1.7–11.9) for diabetic retinopathy. Lastly, 18.9% of participants had an ocular examination within the last year compared to 41.4% in Canada (Z = −4.5, p < 0.0001) and 13.7% had never had a comprehensive eye examination. This sample population shows a prevalence of visual impairment which is four times that of the general Canadian population, with highly prevalent uncorrected refractive error, while accessing primary eye care twice less often. Purpose: To compare visual outcomes of early enhancement following small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) versus laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Methods: Retrospective analysis of eyes (patients operated in the setting of a tertiary eye care hospital between 2014 and 2020) requiring early enhancement (within one year of primary surgery) was conducted. Stability of refractive error, corneal tomography, and anterior segment Optical Coherence Tomography (AS-OCT) for epithelial thickness was performed. The correction post regression was done using photorefractive keratectomy and flap lift in eyes, wherein the primary procedure was SMILE and LASIK, respectively. Pre- and post enhancement corrected and uncorrected distance visual acuity (CDVA and UDVA), mean refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE), and cylinder were analyzed. IBM SPSS statistical software. Results: In total, 6350 and 8176 eyes post SMILE and LASIK, respectively, were analyzed. Of these, 32 eyes of 26 patients (0.5%) post SMILE and 36 eyes of 32 patients (0.44%) post-LASIK required enhancement. Post enhancement (flap lift in LASIK, and PRK in SMILE group) UDVA was logMAR 0.02 ± 0.05 and 0.09 ± 0.16 (P = 0.009), respectively. There was no significant difference between the refractive sphere (P = 0.33) and MRSE (P = 0.09). In total, 62.5% of the eyes in the SMILE group and 80.5% in the LASIK group had a UDVA of 20/20 or better (P = 0.04). Conclusion: PRK post SMILE demonstrated comparable results to flap lift post LASIK and is a safe and effective approach for early enhancement post SMILE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To study the prevalence and determinants of compliance with spectacle wear among school-age children in South India who were given spectacles free of charge under a school vision screening program. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive study was performed. The participants were recruited from the school from Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts of Tamil Nadu, where a school vision screening camp was conducted between January 2012 and October 2012. The school screening was performed under "Lavelle Pediatric Eye Care Project". Of the 129,720 children examined of 249 schools, 4253 of children had refractive error and 3333 were prescribed and dispensed spectacles. A total of 683 children were interviewed, who were not wearing glasses on follow-up. Results: About 20% of the participants (683/3333) were not wearing their spectacles at examination. The most common reasons given for non-wear were lost (44.9%) or broken (35.3%) spectacles. There was no gender preference on compliance to spectacles. Conclusion: Compliance with spectacle wear is less even when spectacles are provided free of cost, particularly in children among the age group of 5–15 years. Because factors such as type of school, area (urban or rural), parent's income, occupation, and their education were not significantly affecting the compliance of spectacle wear, proper encouragement and counseling of the parents and the child become extremely important. Purpose: The World Health Organization is developing a Package of Eye Care Interventions (PECI) to support the integration of eye health care into national health programmes. Interventions included in the PECI should be based on robust evidence where available. Refractive error is a leading cause of blindness and vision impairment and is a PECI priority condition. The aim of this study was to provide high‐quality evidence to support the development of the PECI by identifying and critically appraising clinical practice guidelines (CPGs), and extracting recommendations for refractive error interventions. Methods: We searched for CPGs on refractive error published in the last 10 years. We conducted the searches initially in February and March 2019 and repeated them in March 2020. We evaluated the quality of potentially relevant guidelines using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE) II tool. Results: We identified 12 high‐quality CPGs relevant to refractive error, written by six organisations from three high‐income countries. Organisations used a variety of frameworks to assess the strength of recommendations based on available evidence, with the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) being most common. Vision screening for children aged 3 to 5 years was recommended consistently. Evidence for screening and eye evaluations at other ages was weaker, although ophthalmic professional organisations consistently recommended regular evaluations. Recommendations on optical and laser correction of refractive error were limited and did not consider implications for low resource settings. Interventions for slowing myopia progression in children were recommended, but these will need regular updating as new evidence emerges. Conclusions: Current high‐quality guidelines on refractive error have been formulated in high‐income countries. Recommendations focused on prevention and treatment of refractive error in low‐and middle‐income countries are lacking. Regular updating of systematic reviews and CPGs is essential to ensure that robust evidence is promptly appraised and incorporated into recommendations for eye health care practitioners. Purpose: Global trends show a high prevalence of refractive errors among children. The prevalence of vision impairment due to uncorrected refractive errors among school children is increasing and the need for management of other ocular conditions is also reported. This study presents the status of eye health and pattern of daily activities among the school children of a tribal location in Tamil Nadu, South India.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 13 schools of Karumandurai cluster, Salem district in Tamil Nadu, India. A three-phased comprehensive school screening protocol was conducted to understand the prevalence of vision impairment, refractive error, and other ocular conditions along with a survey about the daily activities of the children at school and home.Results: Among the 3655 children screened, the prevalence of vision impairment was found to be 0.62% (n = 23, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.42-0.94) and prevalence of refractive error was 0.30% (n = 11, 95%CI 0.17-0.54), among which 0.11% (n = 4) were already wearing spectacles. A total of 44 children (1.20%; 95%CI 0.90-1.61) were found to have other ocular problems and among them, 14 (0.38%) had visual acuity less than 20/30 (6/9). Almost 84% of children required surgical or specialty eye care services. Vision impairment was more in children with other ocular conditions compared to refractive errors (P < 0.001).Conclusion: The prevalence of vision impairment and refractive errors in this tribal area was less. Ocular conditions were more prevalent than refractive errors in this tribal region with the majority of children needing specialty or surgical eye care services. Purpose: To establish an appropriate clinical protocol for early photoscreening in 12-to-24-month-old children at pediatric well-baby clinics.Methods: This prospective study included a total of 277 children aged 12-24 months who visited a pediatric well-baby clinic. All participants underwent: 1) inquiry of medical history; 2) photoscreening with PlusoptiX A12; and 3) comprehensive ophthalmologic examinations. The optimal referral cut-off point for PlusoptiX was determined by receiver operating characteristic analyses. A high-risk subgroup was defined as having a birth weight <3000 g or a history of major systemic diseases, based on the results of multivariable risk factor analysis from children's medical history. A strategy of selective photoscreening focusing on the high-risk subgroup was evaluated. The main outcome measures included sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values.Results: The prevalence of amblyopia risk factors in our study population was 12.3%. A total of 172 children (62.1%) were assigned to the high-risk subgroup. Compared with the nonselective photoscreening of all 277 children, selective photoscreening of the high-risk children yielded a higher positive predictive value (59.6% vs. 46.7%, p = 0.001) while showing no difference in sensitivity (82.3% vs. 85.3%, p = 0.32), specificity (92.2% vs, 86.4%, p = 0.05), and negative predictive value (97.4% vs. 97.6%, p = 0.50).Conclusion: At pediatric well-baby clinics, selective photoscreening among 12-to-24-month-old children with a birth weight <3000 g or a history of major systemic diseases helped reducing the number of children need to be screened and conserving medical resources yet identifying children at risk for timely eye care. Background: Visual problems can negatively affect visual development and learning but often go undetected. We assessed the feasibility of scaling up a school-based screening program to identify and treat kindergarten children with visual problems.Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study offering vision screening to junior (JK) and senior kindergarten (SK) children attending 43 schools in 15 Ontario communities. Screening comprised photoscreeners and tests of visual acuity, stereoacuity and eye alignment. Children who failed any test were referred for a comprehensive eye examination, with treatment as needed (e.g., glasses).Results: Using a passive consent model, 89% of children were screened compared with 62% using an active consent model (p < 0.001). Referral rates to an optometrist varied across schools (mean referral rate for children in JK 53%, range 25%-83%; mean referral rate for children in SK 34%, range 12%-61%). Among 4811 children who were screened, a visual problem was detected in 516 (10.7%), including 164 (3.4%) with amblyopia and 324 (6.7%) with clinically significant refractive errors. For 347 (67.2%) of the children with a visual problem, this was their first eye examination. Rescreening in Year 2 did not lead to detection of additional problems among children who passed screening in Year 1. Regardless of location (child's school or optometrist's office), 1563 (68.9%) of children attended the follow-up optometry examination. Most of the children who were surveyed (291 of 322, 90.4%) indicated that they enjoyed vision screening.Interpretation: Many children in Ontario with a visual problem were not being identified by the status quo in 2015-2017. Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare noncycloplegic refraction performed in school camp with that performed in eye clinic in children aged 6-16 years.Methods: A prospective study of children with unaided vision <0.2 LogMAR who underwent noncycloplegic retinoscopy (NCR) and subjective refraction (SR) in camp and subsequently in eye clinic between February and March 2017 was performed. A masked optometrist performed refractions in both settings. The agreement between refraction values obtained at both settings was compared using the Bland-Altman analysis.Results: A total of 217 eyes were included in this study. Between the school camp and eye clinic, the mean absolute error ± standard deviation in spherical equivalent (SE) of NCR was 0.33 ± 0.4D and that of SR was 0.26 ± 0.5D. The limits of agreement for NCR were +0.91D to - 1.09D and for SR was +1.15D to -1.06D. The mean absolute error in SE was ≤0.5D in 92.62% eyes (95% confidence interval 88%-95%).Conclusion: A certain degree of variability exists between noncycloplegic refraction done in school camps and eye clinic. It was found to be accurate within 0.5D of SE in 92.62% eyes for refractive errors up to 4.5D of myopia, 3D of cylinder, and 1.5D of hyperopia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. To measure the prevalence of amblyopia and amblyogenic factors among primary school children and to evaluate distance visual acuity (VA) as a screening test to detect amblyopia and define its cutoff value. Subjects and Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted on primary school children in two schools in Central Cairo. Children underwent assessment of visual acuity using Landolt broken ring. Comprehensive ophthalmologic examination was performed for amblyopia suspects at the Ophthalmology Department of Ain Shams University Hospitals, including reassessment of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) using the same chart. Results. A total of 352 children were examined. Reduced screening VA (amblyopia suspect) was detected in 47 subjects (13.35%) proved amblyopia after comprehensive examination was 1.98% (7 cases). Refractive errors (REs) were present in all suspected and proved amblyopia cases (100%) but was only present in 11.6% of nonamblyopic students (P<0.05). The prevalence of hyperopia in the whole sample was 3.6%, and was 27.6% in subjects with RE. Thirty percent of hyperopic eyes were amblyopic. The prevalence of myopia was 9.3% of the whole sample and 70% of students with RE. Only 9% of myopic eyes were amblyopic. Mild to moderate amblyopia (VA better than 0.2log MAR) was 42.9%, while severe amblyopia represented 57.1%. Conclusion. This study emphasizes the importance of school-based eye care system targeting the detection of amblyopia by application of a fast screening distance VA test with a cutoff value of high sensitivity at log MAR 0.539 (Snellen′s VA equivalent 6/18). Background: To determine the spectacle reassessment rates of dissatisfied patients returning to the optical services department of a tertiary eye centre in India over a period of six years.Methods: A total of 169,567 spectacles were dispensed from the optical services department between January 2010 and December 2015. The spectacle reassessment forms of dissatisfied patients who returned to the optical services department with their spectacles were analysed.Results: A total of 797 spectacle reassessment forms were analysed. The overall spectacle reassessment rate during the study period was found to be 0.5% (95% CI: 0.467-0.472). The mean age of patients returning back for spectacle reassessment was 48 years (SD 19.9, range 3-97 years). Error in refractive correction measurement was found to be the most common reason for spectacle reassessment (54.7%), followed by dispensing error (21.1%), documentation errors while writing the prescription from the medical records in the tertiary eye care centre (12.7%), transcription error occurring at the optical services department (10.8%) and ocular pathologies (0.8%). No statistically significant difference was observed in the year-wise spectacle reassessment rates during the study period (p = 0.14).Conclusions: The frequency of spectacle reassessment rate in a tertiary eye care centre was low, with errors in measuring refractive errors contributing the most to the reassessment and reorder of spectacles. Background: The aim was to derive equations for the relationship between unaided vision and age, pupil diameter, iris colour and sphero-cylindrical refractive error.Methods: Data were collected from 663 healthy right eyes of white subjects aged 20 to 70 years. Subjective sphero-cylindrical refractive errors ranged from -6.8 to +9.4 D (mean spherical equivalent), -1.5 to +1.9 D (orthogonal component, J0 ) and -0.8 to 1.0 D (oblique component, J45 ). Cylinder axis orientation was orthogonal in 46 per cent of the eyes and oblique in 18 per cent. Unaided vision (-0.3 to +1.3 logMAR), pupil diameter (2.3 to 7.5 mm) and iris colour (67 per cent light/blue irides) was recorded. The sample included mostly females (60 per cent) and many contact lens wearers (42 per cent) and so the influences of these parameters were also investigated.Results: Decision tree analysis showed that sex, iris colour, contact lens wear and cylinder axis orientation did not influence the relationship between unaided vision and refractive error. New equations for the dependence of the minimum angle of resolution on age and pupil diameter arose from step backwards multiple linear regressions carried out separately on the myopes (2.91.scalar vector +0.51.pupil diameter -3.14 ) and hyperopes (1.55.scalar vector + 0.06.age - 3.45 ).Conclusion: The new equations may be useful in simulators designed for teaching purposes as they accounted for 81 per cent (for myopes) and 53 per cent (for hyperopes) of the variance in measured data. In comparison, previously published equations accounted for not more than 76 per cent (for myopes) and 24 per cent (for hyperopes) of the variance depending on whether they included pupil size. Background: There are many approaches to treating amblyopia; opaque patching is one of the most common. However, opaque patching is known to have limited patient compliance due to poor cosmesis and social stigma. Partial occlusion with translucent Bangerter foils is a viable alternative to opaque patching. Case Report: JR, a 12-year-old Caucasian male with refractive amblyopia, was referred for a vision therapy evaluation. In addition to reduced acuity of 20/50- OS, JR exhibited decreased accommodative and oculomotor skills. JR was fitted with a 0.3 Bangerter foil OD over his glasses to be worn 2-3 hours per day. JR was enrolled in weekly vision therapy and reevaluated after 10 and 20 sessions. After his 20-week progress check, JR's acuity improved to 20/30 OS. JR also reported a subjective improvement in reading ability and a decrease in frequency of headaches. Conclusion: Bangerter foils are an acceptable alternative to opaque patching for amblyopia treatment. To analyze clinical and demographic data from a twice monthly optometrist-run comprehensive eye program at a high school in a community with high rates of poverty. Students received comprehensive eye examinations. We collected demographic and ocular data on 429 initial visits from February 2015 to July 2019. Follow-up visits were excluded. The average student age was 14.2 ± 2.7 years. Of the total, 55.7% were female, 59.7% were Black, and 61.7% had Medicaid. Of the total, 70.2% had a previous eye examination, 60.8% had worn glasses previously, and 24.1% still wore glasses. Hispanic students were less likely than non-Hispanic students to have had a prior eye examination (59.1% vs 75.3% [ P = 0.022]) or worn glasses (47.8% vs 63.8% [ P = 0.035]). Black students had significantly worse presenting visual acuity in the better seeing eye than White students (logMAR 0.22 vs 0.13 [ P = 0.0004]). Of the 256 Black students, 62.7% had improvement of two or more lines, compared with 42.9% of White students (P = 0.01). Of the students who participated, 74.0% received glasses following their examination, and 21 required referrals to ophthalmologists, of whom 13 attended the appointment. The high school–based clinic identified high rates of uncorrected refractive error, highlighting the benefit of a school-based eye clinic in a population with high rates of poverty. Aim: To investigate the outcome of contact lens (CL) fitting in aphakic children following lensectomy for congenital cataract.Method: Retrospective data of 205 aphakic children who visited for CL fitting following lensectomy from 2008 to 2018 were collected. Data includes the demographic details, CL parameters in first and last visit, hours of CL wear, reason for discontinuation of CL, surgical procedures underwent and years of follow up.Results: 205 (148 unilateral and 57 bilateral) aphakic children comprised of age group, < 1 month (n = 48), 1-3 months (n = 37), 3-6 months (n = 68), 6-12 months (n = 10), >12 months (n = 42). 173/205(84.39%) children were fitted with rigid gas permeable (RGP) and 32/205(15.6%) were fitted with soft CL at their first visit. 10 children had shifted to soft CL in their follow-up visits due to intolerance to RGP. 97/205(47.32%) children continued CL (55RGP, 42SCL) till the last follow-up for 2.17 ± 2.36 years and wore lens for 3.7 ± 3.65 h per day. Number of lenses replaced was 2 lenses (median) and maximum of 9 lenses over a period of 1-8 visits. The maximum visual acuity achieved was up to 0.2 log Mar units at the youngest age of 4 years on successful CL wear. 60/205(29.26%) children discontinued lenses at different follow-up visits due to IOL implantation(n = 28),using spectacles due to handling difficulty, child uncooperative to lens wear and lens fitting issues(n = 32). 48/205(23.41%) were lost to follow-up after the first visit. The average K (7.46 ± 0.43 mm) showed significant correlation to lens base curve in first visit (7.48 ± 0.41 mm) whereas flat K (7.71 ± 0.38 mm) showed significant correlation in the last visit (7.46 ± 0.39 mm) (p < 0.005). This was well described by a significant diameter change of 8.68 ± 0.31 mm to 9.42 ± 1.77 mm (p < 0.005) at the first and last visit respectively. The refractive error showed a significant difference between first (27.96 ± 5.33D) and last visit (21.97 ± 6.85D) (p < 0.005).Conclusion: This study witnessed successful contact lens wear in only half of the children.
