A study is reported of the performance and attainment of 32 students from overseas studying elementary Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) in a Chinese university. With an AB-BA design, they were asked to use two forms of writing media to present two essays: one a word-processed essay entitled "My Favourite Female" and the other a conventional hand-written essay entitled "My Favourite Male". The essays were marked by experienced Chinese language experts and the learners' impression of using each type of writing medium was gathered via questionnaires and interviews. Inferential statistics showed that the students performed significantly better when using a word-processor, and they thought that completing writing tasks using pencil-and-paper and word-processors were markedly different. Most of them felt that their work was more professional when produced on a word-processor. A small number of students considered that writing by hand in Chinese was aesthetically pleasing, but they appreciated the convenience of writing in words spelled and written correctly by the computer. Inter-marker consistency was more homogeneous for essays written on the computer. In conclusion, word-processors are suggested as the preferred writing medium for beginning learners of CFL.

The medical field is facing a physician-scientist shortage, threatening future medical research and development. Medical institutions can contribute to developing physician-scientists by stimulating students' involvement in research. In this study, a medical undergraduate teaching module to develop research skills and encourage interest in research was held in Chongqing, China. Undergraduate medical students at Chongqing Medical University completed research skills training. Before and after the training, an online, anonymous, self-reported questionnaire was administered. The self-reported questionnaire investigated students' demographic characteristics, students' perception of attitudes toward conducting research, research skills (e.g., identifying and utilizing information, critical appraisal of literature, paper writing, and understanding of research), and feedback on scientific research training. The module was implemented with 25 students from July 2019 to October 2019, and 96.0% (N = 24) of participants responded to the questionnaire both prior to and after the training. In the evaluation of research skills, results showed that use of appropriate tools for research (Z = -3.340, p < 0.01), students' ability to undertake a focused literature search (Z = -3.40, p < 0.01), identifying and utilizing information (Z = -3.34, p < 0.01), and paper-writing skills (Z = -3.49, p < 0.01) were significantly improved after the undergraduates participated in the scientific research training. A qualitative analysis of the feedback showed that students found that the training helped to enhance their knowledge, improve their study scores, and motivate them to conduct research in the future. Early scientific research ability training strengthened the research skills of medical undergraduates and motivated them to pursue research.

Family income questions in general purpose surveys are usually collected with either a single-question summary design or a multiple-question disaggregation design. It is unclear how estimates from the two approaches agree with each other. The current paper takes advantage of a large-scale survey that has collected family income with both methods. With data from 14,222 urban and rural families in the 2018 wave of the nationally representative China Family Panel Studies, we compare the two estimates, and further evaluate factors that might contribute to the discrepancy. We find that the two estimates are loosely matched in only a third of all families, and most of the matched families have a simple income structure. Although the mean of the multiple-question estimate is larger than that of the single-question estimate, the pattern is not monotonic. At lower percentiles up till the median, the single-question estimate is larger, whereas the multiple-question estimate is larger at higher percentiles. Larger family sizes and more income sources contribute to higher likelihood of inconsistent estimates from the two designs. Families with wage income as the main income source have the highest likelihood of giving consistent estimates compared with all other families. In contrast, families with agricultural income or property income as the main source tend to have very high probability of larger single-question estimates. Omission of certain income components and rounding can explain over half of the inconsistencies with higher multiple-question estimates and a quarter of the inconsistencies with higher single-question estimates.

Purpose: Smartphone-based questionnaires have advantages compared with their paper versions, but there is a lack of consistent research on depressive disorder questionnaires. This study aimed to assess the equivalence between the paper and smartphone versions of the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology-Self-Report (QIDS-SR16) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for patients with depressive disorders in psychiatric hospitals in China. Patients and Methods: This was a randomized crossover study of 110 depressed patients recruited from the outpatient department of Beijing Anding Hospital from March 2016 to September 2018. Group 1 completed both the QIDS-SR16 and PHQ-9 in paper format and then completed the smartphone version 1– 2 h later. Group 2 completed the scales in the reverse order. Reliability was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). The expected ICC was 0.9 (α=0.05). Results: The overall ICC score of the QIDS-SR16 paper and smartphone versions was 0.904 (95% CI: 0.861– 0.934), and the ICCs of each item ranged from 0.769 to 0.923. The overall ICC score of the PHQ-9 paper and smartphone versions was 0.951 (95% CI: 0.929– 0.967), and the ICCs of each item ranged from 0.779 to 0.914. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the equivalence of the paper and smartphone versions of the PHQ-9 and QIDS-SR16 in depressed patients in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reports on the updating and validation of a questionnaire for vocabulary learning strategies. An English as a second language (ESL) version of the "Vocabulary Learning Questionnaire" (VLQ), first published in Gu and Johnson (1996), was created based on its latest version. Two response formats were piloted, that is, a paper version with a 7-point Likert scale and an online version with a 100-point slider bar. A series of validation procedures resulted in a 62-item instrument which was then administered online among 682 English language learners at the tertiary level in China. The paper presents evidence of content validity, construct validity, internal consistency reliability, and predictive validity. It also provides suggestions for interpreting and using the questionnaire for both research and instructional purposes.

This paper reports a series of research studies on the use of automated writing evaluation (awe) in secondary and university settings in China. The secondary school study featured the use of awe in six intact classes of 268 senior high school students for one academic year. The university study group comprised 460 students from five universities across the country. The teaching experiment included the introduction of an awe tool, Writing Roadmap, to the English as a Foreign Language classroom and offering support to the teachers. A mixed-methods approach in the form of quasiexperimental research design, questionnaires, interviews and journals were undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of the teaching experiment. In this paper, we summarize the results of these studies in relationship to implementation, teacher and student attitudes, effects on writing and revision processes, and impact on writing test score outcomes. We also discuss the key factors affecting the successful integration of this technology in the classroom.

This paper reports on the development and validation of the classroom assessment (CA) for self-regulated learning (SRL) Questionnaire (CASRLQ), a questionnaire intended to measure to what extent CA practices are SRL supportive. The original CASRLQ, consisting of 32 items to represent five SRL-supportive CA dimensions, was constructed and administered to a sample of 469 Grade 11 students. However, the preconceived structure was not supported. We then used the same dataset (split into two) to explore and verify a new factor structure employing exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The questionnaire was then revised. A new sample of 630 Grade 11 students were surveyed to confirm the structure of the revised questionnaire. The final form of the CASRLQ consisted of 28 items and addressed seven CA features: assessment tasks, student choice, self-assessment, peer-assessment, instruction, teacher feedback, and CA environment. The CASRLQ proved to be a reasonably reliable and valid instrument suitable for use in quantitative investigations on CA-SRL-related topics. It could also offer some guidance for teachers' CA practice.

With the development of globalization, English is clearly spoken by many more non-native than native speakers, which raises the discussion of English varieties and the debate regarding the conformity to Standard English. Although a large number of studies have shown scholars' attitudes towards native English and non-native English, little research is conducted from the point of college students until recently. This paper focuses on Chinese college students' perceptions of native English and non-native English in order to offer insights into the mainstream English language teaching in terms of its exclusive reference to English as a native language in China. This paper draws on the data contributed by 50 Chinese university students through questionnaires. The questionnaire responses displayed a superficial preference for native English and a potential inclination for non-native English in EFL classrooms. The article argues that factors behind the attitude point to the need of changing mainstream English teaching.

This paper outlines the alignment-oriented approach in classroom EFL writing. Based on a review of the characteristics of the written language and comparison between the product-focused approach and the process-focused approach, the paper proposes a practical classroom procedure as to how to teach EFL writing. A follow-up empirical study is conducted in classroom writing assignment to illustrate the alignment-oriented approach. Results show that learners show great interest in their reading materials. Besides, learners report being greatly influenced by their reading experience in their writing process, for instance, their lexical choices, writing coherence and tense usage. In this alignment-oriented approach, several factors should be paid great attention to, such as appropriate selection of materials and relevant task perception. It is hoped that this proposed approach can provide insights and implications to other EFL teachers and promote more in-depth studies in EFL writing research.

A considerable number of studies have investigated students' learning in class and outside of class across subjects such as English, mathematics, and physical education in China and other countries. Scholars have found that students' activities in class and outside of class are closely related to their learning outcomes, self-regulated learning and future development of transition strategies. However, the relationship between Chinese basic education and students' choices of activities outside of class has rarely been addressed. Using mixed research methods, this paper examines the relationships between Chinese students' basic education and their choices of English activities at university. The results showed that the participants' basic education and senior high school rankings had significant influences on their choices of learning activities out of the class at university level. The paper also highlights occurrences beyond the classroom in the 21st century China.

The cultural information transferred by language is an important part of Business English teaching. Therefore, teachers of Business English should not only improve the language level of the students, but also develop the students' cross-cultural understanding. The cultivation of intercultural business communication (IBC) competence could not be realized by one or several courses, it must be emphasized through the entirety of Business English teaching. For example, elements of intercultural training should be reflected in Business English teaching materials, classroom discourse, teaching activities, and teaching methodology. This paper analyzed the afore-mentioned elements of IBC competence. Utilizing literature reviews and questionnaires, it also revealed problems in teaching and cultivating IBC competence in Business English curriculum and examined what obstacle Chinese students experience in intercultural communication. The author of this paper proposed three principles that should be followed while integrating IBC competence and Business English teaching in order to realize the simultaneous increase of course knowledge and IBC competence, and to further students' professional knowledge, English language ability, and intercultural business fluency.

The educational reform based on information technology at college has been paid high attention recently in China, which aims at using educational informatization to drive educational modernization and bringing online education into the reform and development strategy of the overall higher education. To promote the educational informatization is not only the inevitable choice of the reform and development of Chinese education; it is also an important means and way to realize the internationalization of the education development. In the background of the development of education system, for the reality is that the teaching way in our university is basically the traditional teaching mode, the paper is to do action research on college English writing based on information technology from the perspective of MOOCs. This paper mainly discusses how to filter to use information technology in network teaching environment in order to help teachers build education concept in the information age, and guide students to truly put themselves into autonomous learning and mobile learning, so as to improve students' innovative writing ability.

This paper investigates the informationization situation of preschool education taking Linxia City in Gansu province. The analysis was conducted by the mean of questionnaire survey and individual interview which was collected in July 2013 in seven ethnic counties in Hui autonomous prefecture of Linxia. As a typical ethnic region, Linxia can reflect the overall minority situation in preschool education informationization in Gansu province, China. The purpose of this paper is to seek suitable early childhood education more practical and constructive solutions exploring the information road of preschool education and providing effective decision support for the development about the related preschool education in Gansu ethnic regions as a whole.

Theoretical and practical implications of incorporating Quick Response (QR) codes in a traveling international art exhibition are addressed in this paper. Blending the physical and virtual dimensions, the exhibition undergirded a pilot study of the integration of technology into traditional museum settings in both China and the United States. The conceptual and methodical framework highlighted in this study included the participatory museum, informal education, and an array of evaluation research methods and techniques. Data collected for analysis comprised a set using Google Analytics, questionnaires completed by exhibition visitors, and other in-depth qualitative findings collected from participating artists from both cultures. This paper shows that the technological aspects of display can lead directly to participatory learning with the potential for new directions and avenues of inquiry.

This paper first based on the theory of cooperative learning research. It analyses the characteristics and advantages of cooperative learning under the multimedia network environment. And then take China Three Gorges University and Taiwan I-Shou University English major students for example, using questionnaires and interviews to investigate the students' cooperative learning in the network environment. Survey results showed that cooperative learning teaching mode has been widely used in English classrooms across the Taiwan Strait. Students think highly of cooperative learning in the multimedia-aided, and it can have a positive effect on learning; but on cooperative learning ability and the specific learning process, students still have some problems. Nowadays, cooperative learning in the network environment has various ways, but there exist certain differences in the learning styles across the Strait. Taiwan students rely more on teachers' help and teachers' feedback, while students in mainland depend mainly on networking and panel discussion. On qualitative analysis of interview is a supplement to the questionnaire and further explore its deeper causes, which provide valuable evidence for the study and learning practice. Finally, according to the comparative analysis, the author puts forward some constructive suggestions.

This paper uses Edgar Dale's Audio-visual Learning Theory and Jean Piaget's Constructionist Learning Theory as the theoretical framework to conduct two control experimental tests and a questionnaire research to investigate students' impression and expectations toward WeChat public account based mobile learning mode as well as its validity, advantages and shortcomings. The findings of the research are as follows: (1) students who use the WeChat public account based mobile learning mode can perform better in acquiring knowledge and passing examinations than non-users; (2) students' mobile learning habits find a good basis for their acceptance of the new WeChat learning mode; (3) most students respond to the new WeChat learning mode with a positive attitude, and universities can introduce this mode into the course design; (4) this new WeChat learning mode helps students learn literature in the aspects of interest stimulation, ability improvement and literature content learning; (5) WeChat mobile learning is only an extension of the current form of learning and cannot replace the current traditional school education; (6) Mobile learning mode based WeChat public account is an important teaching aid for teachers in the aspects of information dissemination, interactive mode and updated contents; (7) The experience of improving the current mobile learning model of WeChat public account can be enriched from students' feedback. It is hoped that WeChat mobile learning will efficiently activate students' learning potentials and promote English and American literature teaching innovation.

From "God's favored person" to "ordinary worker", college students become indifferent to life and addicted to web gaming because they face a rapid devaluation of college student identity in China. At the same time, MOOC and other online learning resources are bringing students better personal learning environment and requiring the students to be more self-disciplined and self-educated oriented. Correlation was found among academic performance, life satisfaction and personal identity. The relationship between students' online learning performance, life satisfaction and social identity has become a key issue for the Chinese educators and academic institutions. This paper investigates college student's social identity and identify how online learning performance influences their life satisfaction and social identity based on 490 questionnaires using Jonathan M. Cheek relational identity orientation scale for the AIQ. The results suggest that the demographic feature of students has different influence on their social identity, and the effect of online learning performance and life satisfaction on social identity shows a significant difference. Besides, implications for improving college students' social identity are also discussed.

This study explores the change of EFL learners' level of self-efficacy in process-genre academic writing instruction. The teaching experiment was conducted for 14 weeks. A total of 59 graduate students participated in the experiment. Before the experiment, the results showed that the general level of EFL graduates' self-efficacy in academic writing was relatively low. After 14 weeks of academic writing instruction conducted by the process-genre approach, participants' self-efficacy improved significantly. In the interview, participants also reported an increasing level of confidence in academic writing. Based on the findings, implications of academic writing instruction to improve students' self-efficacy are discussed in the paper.

Mediation theory facilitates teachers and students to tackle the barriers in English teaching and learning process. It offers a sound systematic theoretical fort on which teachers could rely, redefines teachers' roles and functionings in the process of learners' cognitive development and growing self-regulations. The famous psychologist Lev Vygotsky (1978) raised notions in his ZPD theory, Feuerstein (1980) illuminates capable adults as mediators, and defined twelve main features of mediation, which has empirical study value for English teaching. Thus, through quantitative and qualitative research, this paper aims to investigate the perceptions of English teachers' mediation between private university teachers and students, analyze and compare the similarities and differences between them. The results reveal that both teachers and students coming from the two private universities have been aware of the importance of teachers' mediation, however, have different perceptions in the frequency of teachers' mediation. Teachers' actual employment on mediation is weaker than their beliefs on the importance of it.

This research aims at analyzing the correlation between parents' awareness of anti-domestic violence in China, attitude and frequency of beating children. According to the literature analysis, this paper sets children's parents' anti-domestic violence cognition and attitude of beating children as independent variable, and the frequency of beating children as dependent variables. It adopts self-edited Anti-family Violence Cognitive Scale and Sale of Attitude of Beating Children, investigates 2 to 6 years old children's parents (N = 957) in Jilin Province of China. After the hierarchical regression analysis, it shows that the anti-domestic violence cognition and attitude of beating children have the explanatory power on the frequency of beating children.

Rural children belong to an educationally disadvantaged group whether they migrate or remain in their villages. Using a specially designed questionnaire, this paper surveyed more than 2,500 migrant and left-behind children in the Xixiangtang District of Nanning in Mainland China on issues relating to education and mental state. Through comparisons of migrant and nonmigrant children and those who had and had not been left behind, this study found that migrant children are unable to enter public schools due to incomplete documents, and also experience problems with a safe commute to and from school, after-school care, etc.; left-behind children are more likely to experience problems with emotional deprivation, dull after-school life, susceptibility to disease, and poor habits. With respect to mental state, some of the survey questions showed no significant differences, whereas others displayed significant divergences. It can be seen that both migrant and left-behind children experience problems with educational difficulties, poor discipline, and poor mental adaptability, and are in a clearly disadvantaged position. This paper recommends that the government, schools, society, and families jointly cooperate to strengthen emotional guidance for migrant children and left-behind children and ensure that no child is abandoned, allowing migrant children to grow and learn healthily in their respective environments. While feedback in education is important, formative feedback that leads to improvement in students' learning outcomes and emotional disposition is vital. This argument has been made repeatedly in the Western literature, both by researchers and by students participating in their research in higher education. This paper presents both affective and non-affective improvement as the most frequently occurring theme identified in a mixed-methods study conducted at a National Key University in mainland China, which investigated 232 Chinese students' experiences and expectations of feedback from their Chinese tutors. This paper, thus, concludes that mainland Chinese university students and Western researchers and students likely agree on the primary function of tutor feedback. The desire for tutor feedback to also or chiefly play a formative role appears not to be a geographically or culturally specific phenomenon.

Interaction is critical for successful teaching and learning in a virtual learning environment (VLE). This paper presents a web-based interaction-aware VLE--WebIntera-classroom--which aims to augment learning interactions by increasing the learner-to-content and learner-to-instructor interactions. We design a ubiquitous interactive interface that integrates a pen-and-paper interface with a web-based whiteboard to promote effective learner-to-content interactions. We develop a learning analytics tool that instantly shows learners' learning interactions, with which instructors can supervise learner-to-instructor interactions. We implement a high-granularity Learning Analytics Engine (hgLAE) to broadcast, record and play a lecture recording. The hgLAE identifies hotspots in a lecture recording and raises students' awareness of the hotspots when they watch the recording. WebIntera-classroom has been deployed in 11 universities in China. The system obtained high satisfaction in the questionnaires (N = 464) and face-to-face interviews (N = 60) conducted with the users from China Jiliang University. We compared the students' performance, respectively, achieved in traditional classroom and in WebIntera-classroom at China Jiliang University during 2012-2013. The result demonstrates that the students could gain performance improvement by using WebIntera-classroom.

Test anxiety was a commonly known or assumed factor that could greatly influence performance of test takers. With the employment of designed questionnaires and computer-based spoken English test, this paper explored test anxiety manifestation of Chinese college students from both macro and micro aspects, and found out that the major anxiety in computer-based spoken English test was spoken English test anxiety, which consisted of test anxiety and communication apprehension. Regard to proximal test anxiety, the causes listed in proper order as low spoken English abilities, lack of speaking techniques, anxiety from the evaluative process and inadaptability with computer-based spoken English test format. As to distal anxiety causes, attitude toward learning spoken English and self-evaluation of speaking abilities were significantly negatively correlated with test anxiety. Besides, as test anxiety significantly associated often with test performance, a look at pedagogical implications has been discussed in this paper.

This paper examines whether Hong Kong teachers and students perceived Liberal Studies and its ongoing curriculum review as politically driven during and after the Umbrella Movement, a large-scale civil disobedience campaign that took place in September 2014. The findings presented herein show that both groups disagreed with the claim that Liberal Studies was used as a political instrument to instigate students' participation in the protest movement. Moreover, they also reveal that teachers have maintained their neutrality towards controversial issues related to politics during Liberal Studies lessons. Whilst the participating teachers and students considered the government's proposed reform of Liberal Studies to be politically motivated, they held differing attitudes towards the addition of more China-related elements to the subject. On the basis of these results, this paper analyses the potential role of Liberal Studies in the democratisation of local society. It also provides an indication of the curriculum's dynamic nature, explanation of students' resistance to the review policy and suggestions for the subject's future development.

One major threat to validity in high-stakes testing is construct-irrelevant variance. In this study we explored whether the transition from a paper-and-pencil to a computer-based test mode in a high-stakes test in China, the College English Test, has brought about variance irrelevant to the construct being assessed in this test. Analyses of the test scores, text complexity, language errors, and writing processes revealed that computer-based writing elicited cognitive processes among test takers that were similar to those of traditional paper-based writing; moreover, a high level of computer familiarity had a facilitative effect on test-takers' performances. In considering these results we argue that, in the 21st century, the construct of a computer-based language test needs to be reconceptualized by drawing on Chalhoub-Deville's view of local context-bound constructs: computer literacy should be viewed as an important contextual facet interacting with the construct measured in a computer-based language assessment.

This paper presents the development and validation of the reading motivation questionnaire in an English as a foreign language context (RMQ-EFL) with Chinese secondary students. Data were collected from a sample of 293 secondary students in grades 10-11. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses resulted in determination of five factors (i.e., "reading efficacy," "reading enjoyment," "recognition," "involvement," and "compliance") with a strong psychometric basis. The significant correlations between these five RMQ-EFL factors and students' learning strategies in reading and between the five RMQ-EFL factors and students' English learning achievements further confirmed the concurrent and predictive validity of the RMQ-EFL. In addition, this study found that there were no significant differences in students' EFL reading motivation across gender and grade levels. The RMQ-EFL can be used both as an evaluation tool for teachers to assess students' EFL reading motivation, and as a research tool for researchers to explore the relationships between students' English reading motivation and their English reading behavior and performance or to assess the effectiveness of targeted reading motivation interventions.

Cooperative learning is one of the most recognized and fruitful research areas in modern education practice. It has been widely used in many countries as an effective teaching strategy to improve class efficiency and students' comprehensive language ability since the 1990's. This paper takes JA Junior High School, a rural junior high school in Nantong, China, as a case to explore its English cooperative learning mode. A questionnaire was designed based on nine factors namely learning expectation, learning interest, learning initiative, emotional experience, cooperative awareness, cooperative ability, learning effectiveness, learning evaluation and English usage level. The purpose is to try to find whether gender, grade and academic achievements have an effect on English cooperative learning. 515 valid questionnaires were collected and analyzed by t-test and One-way ANOVA. After analysis, it turned out that these three factors have an impact on the effectiveness of English cooperative learning. The results showed that the differences of gender, grade and academic achievements should be taken into consideration in accordance with the characteristics of rural middle school in constructing the English cooperative learning mode.

This paper, adopting questionnaire survey method, investigated 367 non-key local university English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students' demotivation to learn English. The collected data revealed that there were two main categories of demotivators: internal factors ("lack of intrinsic interest," "experience of failure and lack of confidence," and "unclear study goal") and external factors ("teaching material, teaching process and teaching content," "significant others, teachers' teaching competence" and "attitude of teachers," "the relationship between teachers and students," "teaching facilities and teaching environment"). External factors are found to be more influential than internal ones in the participants' demotivation to learn English. The current study adds to the literature in that "unclear study goal" is an important demotivator in Chinese local non-key university EFL students' English study. The findings of this study will enrich the research of demotivation to learn English, and to provide an empirical basis for the needs analysis in English class and curriculum reform, as well as to provide reference for implementing central and local education policies.

This paper reviewed the literature of the previous research and questionnaire survey on reading strategy. Based on theories of psycholinguistics, a five-week experiment was carried out in order to probe into the effectiveness of strategy training. The experiment was designed to answer the following question: Can reading comprehension be improved by strategy training? Two groups of subjects from non-English majors participated in the experiment and questionnaire survey. Experimental group received training on reading strategies while control group didn't. By comparing the results of the pretest and posttest of the two groups, the effectiveness of strategy training was examined. The results of data analysis indicated that both efficient and non-efficient readers use strategies to facilitate their reading and there was no significant difference between them with regard to strategy use in general, but some strategies were especially favored by the efficient readers and that reading competence could be improved by strategy training.

In response to the growing trend of internationalisation in education, it is important to consider approaches to help international students integrate in their new settings. One possible approach involves the use of e-Learning tools, such as virtual worlds and gamification. To maximise the potential effectiveness of such tools, it may be beneficial to involve international students in a technological codesign process. This paper develops an inclusive design process based on the definitions of Inclusive Design outlined by the SMARTlab and IDRC teams, as part of a co-design specification in practice, gathering specific information about the needs of Chinese students in Ireland at University College Dublin (UCD) through a questionnaire and an empathy-driven design approach. From the responses of questionnaire, we found that students would find beneficial many features that virtual environments can provide (e.g., 3D campus tours and virtual lectures). We also found that collaborative, social activities were a more popular way to potentially increase language and cultural understanding than structured courses. Finally, we learned that the incorporation of game-like elements in virtual environments requires careful planning: while this may be effective in increasing user engagement with information, users do not want to have to be successful in games in order to gain access to essential resources or information. Based on these specific needs provided by these Chinese students themselves, a virtual campus (VC) which was created in a unique virtual platform called Terf® has been constructed.

The unemployment problem of college students in China has drawn much attention from academics and society. Using the 2011 College Student Labor Market (CSLM) survey data from Tsinghua University, this paper estimated the effects of college quality on initial employment, including employment status and employment unit ownership for fresh college graduates. The propensity score matching method was employed to account for the potential endogeneity of elite college attendance. The empirical evidence suggested that students who attended Project 985 colleges were more likely to find jobs immediately after college graduation. Moreover, students graduated from Project 211 universities gained a competitive edge by entering into public working sectors, such as the government or state-owned enterprises (SOEs), compared with students from non-elite colleges. The results imply the students who graduated from non-elite universities faced labor market segmentation. They not only had obstacles in finding jobs, but also ended up in the secondary labor market.

Knowledge sharing should not be confused neither with data sharing nor with information sharing; the knowledge sharing includes data and information sharing, skills and expertise communication, ideas exchange. Since the fourth FOCAC held in Egypt in 2009, many policies have been added to reinforce Africa and China educational cooperation, especially in the area of higher education. And this paper intends to look more closely at this area, particularly with regards to the possibility of establishing and strengthening knowledge sharing, ideas exchange between Africa and China, through African and Chinese students' partnership. Based on the documented trends on Africa and China higher education cooperation, partnership and exchanges, questionnaire surveys, interviews and observations, the author tries to find out whether African students who are studying in China will to collaborate or not with Chinese students during their studies and researches. What are their motivations to cooperate with their Chinese classmates, and how should we beef up and promote knowledge sharing between African and Chinese people through University students' knowledge sharing partnership?

The paper draws on findings from a case study which explored factors influencing students' decision-making of postgraduate (PG) education at G University in China. Both questionnaires and follow-up interviews were used for data collection. This paper reports the main reasons for students' choices of subject and institution for PG education, and the influences of families and teachers, and of "guanxi" in their decision-making. The findings show that both families and teachers play important roles in shaping students' decision-making about PG education. It provides insights into students' decision-making about higher education embedded in the Chinese culture of Confucianism.

Students grown up with digital technology and Internet are called digital natives or net generation. All others, who grew up without so much immersion with digital technologies are called digital immigrants. Researchers held different ideas on whether a new generation of learners existed. One of the foci of the debate is on the appropriateness of using age as the criteria to divide "digital native" and "digital immigrants". In order to reconcile the debate, the term "digital learner" was used in this paper, with the hypothesis that the time length for using technology could be used as the criteria for dividing digital learners. It is also noticed that there were few studies focused on the learning preferences of today's learners in Chinese context. In order to understand learners' learning preference and test our hypothesis, a large-scale survey with 44470 participants and 7 focus group interviews were conducted with 28 participants. Results showed NetizenYears that indicated the number of years passed since he/she first time got online could be used as the criteria of digital learners. Digital learners could be labeled as 1-NetizenYear digital learners, 2-NetzizenYears digital learners, and so on, and non-digital learners are those with 0 NetizenYear. Results revealed that non-digital learners and digital learners had significantly different Internet use patterns. More positive attitudes to Internet, more active participation online and more tendency to Internet addiction were found for digital learners with increasing NetizenYears. The gap between digital learner's preferred learning approach and teaching methods in classroom was discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion on using the time length of using technology as the criteria for digital learners.

It is not unusual to find that employers operating in low-pay sectors are reluctant to provide vocational training. Frequently they fear benefitting competitors as better-skilled employees command a more competitive position in the labour market and may choose to leave one employer and take their newly acquired skills elsewhere. However, in contrast the expectation might reasonably be that employers in more skilled sectors would be more enthusiastic about such training particularly when the financial, environmental and human costs, of errors are high. This paper therefore analyses vocational training provision in the more skilled sector of professional seafaring. In this sector, accidents may cause massive environmental damage and loss of life, and may incur substantial fines and financial penalties. Using a mix of qualitative and quantitative data, the paper focuses upon the adequacy of the training that is provided to seafarer officers in relation to the introduction of new technology aboard their vessels.

Aims: This study aimed to explore the effects of compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue on the posttraumatic growth of psychiatric nurses. Background: Psychiatric nurses' prolonged and repeated exposure to trauma and complex situations in the work environment can lead to negative emotions such as compassion fatigue, but they also experience positive consequences such as posttraumatic growth, and the relationship between compassion fatigue and posttraumatic growth is not unclear. Methods: A total of 336 nurses from psychiatry departments of seven tertiary hospitals in Sichuan Province, China, were administered an online questionnaire. Participants were recruited through convenience sampling. The posttraumatic growth level was measured with the Simplified Chinese version of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. The Professional Quality of Life Scale‐Chinese version was used to assess compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress. T‐test and one‐way variance analysis, Pearson correlation analysis and hierarchical linear regression were used for data analysis. A STROBE checklist was used to guide the reporting of the research. Results: Psychiatric nurses' posttraumatic growth is at a low level, influenced by demographic and occupational factors, whereas compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress are at a moderate level. Hierarchical regression analysis suggested that compassion satisfaction and secondary traumatic stress had a positive impact on posttraumatic growth, whereas burnout had a negative impact on posttraumatic growth. Conclusions: Findings suggest that nursing managers should attach importance to the mental health of psychiatric nurses, improve compassion satisfaction, alleviate burnout and promote posttraumatic growth. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Psychiatric patients generally have complex and special conditions, which makes psychiatric nursing work high‐risk and stressful, which often poses significant challenges for psychiatric nurses, such as compassion fatigue.There is a correlation between compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue and posttraumatic growth among nurses. What this paper adds? Psychiatric nurses have low levels of posttraumatic growth and moderate levels of compassionate satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress, and posttraumatic growth is influenced by sleep hours per day, marital status, children and job satisfaction.Compassion satisfaction and secondary traumatic stress have a positive impact on posttraumatic growth of psychiatric nurses, whereas burnout has a negative impact on posttraumatic growth of psychiatric nurses. The implications of this paper: This study emphasizes that policy makers should clarify the relationship between posttraumatic growth, compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue as soon as possible to support the rapid growth of psychiatric nurses in nursing work.This study provides a basis for nursing managers to explore and implement interventions to improve compassion satisfaction among psychiatric nurses, reduce burnout and promote personal psychological growth. Research on engineering practice is scarce and sharing of qualitative research data can reduce the effort required for an aspiring researcher to obtain enough data from engineering workplaces to draw generalizable conclusions, both qualitative and quantitative. This paper describes how a large shareable qualitative data set on engineering practices was accumulated from 350 interviews and 12 field studies performed by the principal investigator and by students conducting PhD and capstone research projects. Ethical research practice required that sharing and reuse of qualitative data be considered from the start. The researchers' interests and methods were aligned to maintain sufficient consistency to support subsequent analysis and re-analysis of data. Analysis helped to answer questions of fundamental significance for engineering educators: what do engineers do, and why are the performances of engineering enterprises so different in South Asia compared with similar enterprises in Australia? Analysis also demonstrated the overwhelming significance of technical collaboration in engineering practice. Conceiving engineering practice as a series of technical collaboration performances requires a more elaborate understanding of social interactions than is currently the case in engineering schools. Another finding is that global engineering competency could be better described in terms of "working with people who collaborate differently". Research helped to demonstrate that formal treatment of technical collaboration in an engineering curriculum could help avoid student misconceptions about engineering practice that hinder their subsequent engineering performances.

This paper reports on an investigation into the relationship of test-takers' use of test-wiseness strategies to Chinese EFL learners' reading test performance. A test-wiseness questionnaire was administered immediately after the final achievement test to probe into how learners thought while completing the reading section of the test. It was found out that the use of test-wiseness strategies bore no positive relationship to the reading test performance; and successful test-takers reported test-wiseness strategy use no more significantly different than unsuccessful test-takers. The results suggested that the bias against Asian EFL learners, especially Chinese EFL learners, in their test-taking process was unfair, since test-wiseness strategies did not contribute to these EFL learners' reading performance and the distinction between successful and unsuccessful test-takers.

As a very important skill both in English teaching and learning, reading strategy has been emphasized at home and abroad for a long time. Many scholars and teachers make research on undergraduates of English major or non-English major. However, the postgraduates are often neglected. Actually, it is also imperative to make a study among postgraduates of non-English majors, getting the information of their use of reading strategies and giving some useful suggestions to them. Therefore, this paper makes a quantitative study among 40 postgraduates from College of Mechanical Engineering in Chang'an University. This study shows that postgraduates of non-English major in Chang'an university do not frequently use reading strategies to improve their reading speed and proficiency. And there is a big difference between the successful learners and unsuccessful learners in terms of the use of reading strategies.

Accommodating to the development of globalization, China witnesses a mounting demand for international business talents who are proficient in both foreign languages and business knowledge and adept at international cooperation and competition in business context. In order to meet this need, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, taking advantage of its resources in foreign languages and outstanding professional teachers, made a breakthrough in multidisciplinary teaching reform and took initiative to set up the program of International Business Innovation Class in autumn, 2010. In July 2014, it has delivered its first batch of graduates. Hence, it is of great significance to conduct relevant investigations on the teaching mode and practice timely so as to obtain data for assessing its teaching effectiveness and students' satisfaction. Based on empirical study, this paper evaluates three factors: learners' recognition, features and problems of this program, which aims at identifying existing problems in practical teaching, improving teaching quality and students' satisfaction and proposing feasible suggestions to address them. In a broader context, it attempts to provide a quotable paradigm for similar innovation programs or similar institutions' internationalization.

Grammar is "a system of rules governing the conventional arrangement and relationship of words in a sentence" (Brown 1994) which can facilitate the acquisition of a foreign language and is conducive for cultivating comprehensive language competence. Most teachers regard grammar as a frame of English learning. The grammar teaching beliefs held by teachers can affect their practical teaching behaviors in class, thus can have different teaching results in the end. Therefore, through quantitative and qualitative research, this paper aims to investigate the present status of grammar beliefs of high school students as well as teachers' beliefs and their grammar teaching behaviors, analyze and compare the similarities and differences between them. The result shows that teachers' grammar teaching has the tendency of communicative teaching while students' grammar beliefs have the characteristic of integration of communicative and traditional grammar teaching. Teachers' grammar teaching behaviors can basically be consistent with their grammar teaching beliefs.

In order to develop a more scientific education system of Business English courses, this paper studies the case of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS, one of Chinese top-three foreign language universities) by questionnaires. The result shows that: 1) Most of the students hope that the school could add more business courses in the curriculum setting, as it can help them to find better jobs or it will be more consistent with their interests and expectations when they decide to choose this major. 2) Students hope that they have more opportunities to practice their English listening, speaking and business practice skills. 3) There are many difficulties when students are learning business English, so the school should add some related courses to help students to deal with these problems. Based on the empirical analysis and the findings of this research, some suggestions are proposed for the improvement of the education system.

This paper first reviews the developmental history and status quo of Business English Program in China. Then based on the theory of needs analysis, it researches on 226 questionnaires from Business English Program students from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies to investigate the problems encountered and current situation of Business English Program in China. From the statistical analysis of the questionnaires, it finds: (1) employment and interest are the main reasons that students choose Business English as their major, but the current Business English teaching materials haven't fully considered student's demands for vocational requirements; (2) it should take into account both the learners' and societies' needs in Business English curriculum arrangement to increase the number of business-related courses appropriately; (3) students generally agreed that they lacks business knowledge and skills, so Business English courses should focus on cultivating the practical business skills; (4) Business English teaching materials should always be practicality oriented and targeted and communicative; (5) in order to improve teaching effectiveness, Business English teachers should consciously adopt different teaching methods targeted for different teaching content during the teaching process; (6) teachers' morality, knowledge, teaching style and mutual relationship with students can be further enhanced to meet the needs of students.
