Abiotic and biotic stresses globally constrain plant growth and impede the optimization of crop productivity. The phytohormone auxin is involved in nearly every aspect of plant development. Auxin acts as a chemical messenger that influences gene expression through a short nuclear pathway, mediated by a family of specific DNA-binding transcription factors known as Auxin Response Factors (ARFs). ARFs thus act as effectors of auxin response and translate chemical signals into the regulation of auxin responsive genes. Since the initial discovery of the first ARF in Arabidopsis, advancements in genetics, biochemistry, genomics, and structural biology have facilitated the development of models elucidating ARF action and their contributions to generating specific auxin responses. Yet, significant gaps persist in our understanding of ARF transcription factors despite these endeavors. Unraveling the functional roles of ARFs in regulating stress response, alongside elucidating their genetic and molecular mechanisms, is still in its nascent phase. Here, we review recent research outcomes on ARFs, detailing their involvement in regulating leaf, flower, and root organogenesis and development, as well as stress responses and their corresponding regulatory mechanisms: including gene expression patterns, functional characterization, transcriptional, post-transcriptional and posttranslational regulation across diverse stress conditions. [Objectives] The paper was to explore the effects of different doses of water-retaining agent on the growth and development indicators, yield and quality of soybean plants subjected to drought stress. [Methods] The effects of drought stress (MDS) and drought stress with low (MDS-L), medium (MDS-M) and high doses (MDS-H) of the water-retaining agent on the growth and development indicators, root activity, MDA content, antioxidant enzyme activity, yield and quality of soybean were studied by field plot test, with the normal water supply serving as the control (CK). [Results] In response to drought stress, the plant height, stem diameter, and yield of soybean exhibited a notable decline. Additionally, the contents of protein, fat, linoleic acid, and linolenic acid in seeds demonstrated a significant reduction. Conversely, the root activity and antioxidant enzyme activity exhibited a noticeable decline, while the MDA content exhibited an increase. The application of varying doses of the water-retaining agent was found to significantly enhance soybean growth, stimulate root activity, and elevate antioxidant enzyme activity, while concurrently reducing MDA content. The observed effects were found to be dose-dependent, with the greatest effects observed at the highest dose. In comparison to MDS, the yields of soybean in the MDS-L, MDS-M, and MDS-H treatments exhibited a 18.38%, 25.58%, and 46.26% increase, respectively. Additionally, the content of protein, fat, linoleic acid, and linolenic acid in seeds demonstrated a notable enhancement. [Conclusions] The application of the water-retaining agent has been demonstrated to significantly promote the growth of soybean plants under conditions of drought strefs, resulting in an improvement in both the yield and the quality of the soybean crop. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced as undesirable by‐products of metabolism in various cellular compartments, especially in response to unfavorable environmental conditions, throughout the life cycle of plants. Stress‐induced ROS production disrupts normal cellular function and leads to oxidative damage. To cope with excessive ROS, plants are equipped with a sophisticated antioxidative defense system consisting of enzymatic and non‐enzymatic components that scavenge ROS or inhibit their harmful effects on biomolecules. Nonetheless, when maintained at relatively low levels, ROS act as signaling molecules that regulate plant growth, development, and adaptation to adverse conditions. Here, we provide an overview of current approaches for detecting ROS. We also discuss recent advances in understanding ROS signaling, ROS metabolism, and the roles of ROS in plant growth and responses to various abiotic stresses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phytohormone is a key regulator of plant growth and development. It has important effects on plant under biotic and abiotic stresses. However, the dose control of phytohormone is always a difficult problem in the application process, which limits the application range of phytohormone. Nanotechnology, because of its characteristics of controlled release, targeted therapy, non-pollution, high adsorption, lower volatilization of active substances, and low dosage of drug, comes into researchers' vision. Nanomaterials were directly applicated on crops at the early stage, and then active substances, such as pesticides, were encapsulated with nanomaterials, also achieved good results in the field. Currently, more and more attentions have been paid to nano-enabled delivery of phytohormones to plants, and formed a new field in agriculture. In present work, we reviewed the existing literatures, focused on the important regulatory roles of phytohormones in plant growth and development and their application potential, and the development and application prospect of nanomaterials combined with phytohormones were also have been discussed. Alfin-like (AL) proteins are an important class of transcription factor (TF) widely distributed in eukaryotes and play vital roles in many aspects of plant growth and development. AL proteins contain an Alfin-like domain and a specific PHD-finger structure domain at the N-terminus and C-terminus, respectively. The PHD domain can bind to a specific (C/A) CAC element in the promoter region and affect plant growth and development by regulating the expression of functional genes. This review describes a variety of AL transcription factors that have been isolated and characterized in Arabidopsis thaliana, Brassica rapa, Zea mays, Brassica oleracea, Solanum lycopersicum, Populus trichocarpa, Pyrus bretschenedri, Malus domestica, and other species. These studies have focused mainly on plant growth and development, different abiotic stress responses, different hormonal stress responses, and stress responses after exposure to pathogenic bacteria. However, studies on the molecular functional mechanisms of Alfin-like transcription factors and the interactions between different signaling pathways are rare. In this review, we performed phylogenetic analysis, cluster analysis, and motif analysis based on A. thaliana sequences. We summarize the structural characteristics of AL transcription factors in different plant species and the diverse functions of AL transcription factors in plant development and stress regulation responses. Cytokinins (CKs) are among the hormones that regulate plants' growth and development, and the CKX and IPT genes, which are CK degradation and biosynthesis genes, respectively, play important roles in fine-tuning plants' cytokinin levels. However, the current research on the function of IPT and CKX in cucumber's growth, development, and response to abiotic stress is not specific enough, and their regulatory mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, we focused on the IPT and CKX genes in cucumber, analyzed the physiological and biochemical properties of their encoded proteins, and explored their expression patterns in different tissue parts and under low light, salt stress, and drought stress. Eight CsCKX and eight CsIPT genes were identified from the cucumber genome. We constructed a phylogenetic tree from the amino acid sequences and performed prediction analyses of the cis-acting elements of the CsCKX and CsIPT promoters to determine whether CsCKXs and CsIPTs are responsive to light, abiotic stress, and different hormones. We also performed expression analysis of these genes in different tissues, and we found that CsCKXs and CsIPTs were highly expressed in roots and male flowers. Thus, they are involved in the whole growth and development process of the plant. This paper provides a reference for further research on the biological functions of CsIPT and CsCKX in regulating the growth and development of cucumber and its response to abiotic stress. The tea plant is a perennial leaf-used economical crop and cultivated all over the world. Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) plays key roles in plant development and environmental stress. YUCCA (YUC) flavin monooxygenases are the rate-limiting enzymes of the TAA/YUC pathway, which is the most important IAA biosynthetic pathway in plants. The YUC gene family in tea plants has not been systematically studied so far. A total of 17 CsYUC members were identified from a tea plant genome database and phylogenetically classified into three subfamilies. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the CsYUC gene family is evolutionarily conserved. The physical and chemical properties, gene structures, and conserved domains were analyzed. The expression profiles of CsYUCs were analyzed on the basis of open available RNA-seq data, as well as by RNA-seq and qRT-PCR assays. Combined with previous studies, it can be concluded that YUC10 may play key roles in seed development. The results also showed that CsYUC2.1 may play important roles in the coordinated regulation of the growth of leaf buds and flower buds induced by pruning. Low temperature markedly induced the expression of CsYUC2.2, -11.8, and -11.9. Furthermore, CsYUC genes that might play key roles in the specific development stages and involve enhancing the resistance to drought and NaCl stress were screened, respectively. WRKY is one of the largest transcription factor families in plants and plays an important role in plant growth and development as well as in abiotic and biological stresses. However, there is little information about the WRKY family in Melastoma dodecandrum. In this study, 126 WRKY members were identified in M. dodecandrum. According to phylogenetic analysis, they were divided into three major groups, and group II was further divided into five subgroups. MedWRKY genes were unevenly distributed on 12 chromosomes. Additionally, the gene structure and sequence composition were similar within the same group and differed between groups, suggesting their functional diversity. The promoter sequence analysis identified a number of cis-acting elements related to plant growth and development, stress response, and secondary metabolite synthesis in the WRKY gene family. The collinearity analysis showed that gene replication events were the main driving force of MedWRKY gene evolution. The transcriptome data and RT-qPCR analysis suggested that MedWRKY genes had higher expression in the roots and ripe fruit of M. dodecandrum. Root architecture development, an agronomic trait that influences crop yield, is regulated by multiple plant hormones. Abscisic acid (ABA) is a stress hormone that responds to multiple stresses, including salt, drought, and cold stress, and modulates various aspects of plant growth and development. In recent years, it has been found that ABA synthesized under mild stress or well-watered conditions can support plant growth and stress resistance by positively regulating root architecture development. In this review, we summarize the molecular, cellular, and organismal basis of ABA homeostasis in the root and how ABA signaling affects root architecture development both as an inhibitor and as an activator. We discuss the implications of these studies and the potential for exploiting the components of ABA signaling in designing crop plants with improved root system development and stress resistance. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a ubiquitous four-carbon non-protein amino acid that is involved in various physiological processes of plant growth and development, such as root architecture, stem elongation, leaf senescence, pollen tube growth, fruit ripening, and seed germination. GABA is also related to plant stress responses, such as drought, salt, cold, and heat stresses. Regulation of GABA in plant stress responses is complex and involves multiple signaling pathways, including calcium and hormone signaling. This paper systematically reviews the synthesis, metabolic pathways and regulatory role of GABA in plants, which will provide new insights into the understanding of plant growth and stress responses and offer novel strategies for improving crop productivity and stress. Small peptide hormones are usually referred to as peptides containing 5 to 100 amino acids in length. In plants, the contents of small peptide hormones are very low, the molecular weight is small, the quantity is large, and the source and processing mechanism is complex. This gives small peptides a variety of biological functions. They can bind to receptors at very low concentrations, regulate physiological processes such as cell division and growth, tissue and organ differentiation, flowering and fruiting, maturation and senescence, and coordinate plant responses to various stress environments. As an important medium of signal transduction among cells, the molecular mechanism of small peptide hormones in regulating growth and development is the hotspot and front topic in Botany. First the research progress of the structure, synthesis, classification and function of small peptide hormones were systematically reviewed. Pathogenesis-related class 10 (PR-10) proteins play a role in plant growth and development, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are unclear. Here, we isolated a salt-induced PR-10 gene from the halophyte Halostachys caspica and named it HcPR10. HcPR10 was constitutively expressed during development and HcPR10 localized to the nucleus and cytoplasm. HcPR10-mediated phenotypes including bolting, earlier flowering, increased branch number and siliques per plant are highly correlated with increased cytokinin levels in transgenic Arabidopsis. Meanwhile, increased levels of cytokinin in plants is temporally correlated with HcPR10 expression patterns. Although the expression of cytokinin biosynthesis genes validated was not upregulated, cytokinin-related genes including chloroplast-related genes, cytokinin metabolism and cytokinin responses genes and flowering-related genes were significantly upregulated in the transgenic Arabidopsis compared to the wild type by transcriptome deep sequencing. Analysis of the crystal structure of HcPR10 revealed a trans-zeatin riboside (a type of cytokinin) located deep in its cavity, with a conserved conformation and protein–ligand interactions, supporting HcRP10 acts as a cytokinin reservoir. Moreover, HcPR10 in Halostachys caspica predominantly accumulated in vascular tissue, the site of long-distance translocation of plant hormones. Collectively, we draw that HcPR10 as a cytokinin reservoir induces cytokinin-related signal transduction in plants, thereby promoting plant growth and development. These findings could provide intriguing insights into the role of HcPR10 proteins in phytohormone regulation in plants and advance our understanding of cytokinin-mediated plant development and could facilitate the breeding of transgenic crops with earlier mature, higher yielding agronomic traits. Climate change is a major concern to people all over the world. Most studies have considered singular or dual effects of climate change implications on plant growth and development; however, the combination of multiple factors has received little attention. We therefore studied the single and combined effects of two environmental stress factors (high temperature and water stresses) and abscisic acid on tomato seedlings (Solanum lycoperscum L.). Plants were grown in controlled environment growth chambers under two temperatures (22/18 °C or 28/24 °C; 16 h light/8 h dark), two watering regimes (well-watered or water-stressed), and two abscisic acid treatments (0 and 100 µL of 1mM abscisic acid solution, every other day). Plants were placed under experimental conditions for a total of 33 days, including a 13-day period of initial growth and hardening. Morphological, biochemical, and physiological parameters were measured to assess the growth and development of plants in response to the three factors. ANOVA and Scheffé's multiple-comparison procedures were used to establish significant differences among treatments and among the three factors being manipulated. All three factors decreased plant height and growth rate. Dry mass accumulation was negatively affected by high temperatures. Transpiration, stomatal conductance, and gas exchange parameters were negatively affected by all three factors; additionally, net carbon dioxide assimilation was reduced by water stress and abscisic acid application. Non-photochemical quenching was decreased in plants grown under higher temperature and in abscisic acid-treated plants. Though it was not significant, abscisic acid appears to mitigate the negative effect of higher temperature and water stress on the nitrogen balance index and total chlorophyll content. The absorption and utilization processes of different forms of nitrogen and their effects on plant growth, stress resistance, quality and safety, as well as the effects of external environmental conditions on their effects were summarized. It showed that NO3--N could generally promote the root development of plants and promote the absorption of cations by plants. NH4+-N could alleviate the damage of salt stress and reactive oxygen species to plants, and also improve the resistance of plants to diseases. However, NH4+-N poisoning was easy to be caused by single application of NH4+, such as increase of cell acidity, reactive oxygen species damage and lignification of cell walls. Plant glutamate receptor-like channels (GLRs) are the homologues of ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) that mediate neurotransmission in mammals, and they play important roles in various plant-specific physiological processes, such as pollen tube growth, sexual reproduction, root meristem proliferation, internode cell elongation, stomata aperture regulation, and innate immune and wound responses. Notably, these biological functions of GLRs have been mostly linked to the Ca2+-permeable channel activity as GLRs can directly channel the transmembrane flux of Ca2+, which acts as a key second messenger in plant cell responses to both endogenous and exogenous stimuli. Thus, it was hypothesized that GLRs are mainly involved in Ca2+ signaling processes in plant cells. Recently, great progress has been made in GLRs for their roles in long-distance signal transduction pathways mediated by electrical activity and Ca2+ signaling. Here, we review the recent progress on plant GLRs, and special attention is paid to recent insights into the roles of GLRs in response to environmental stimuli via Ca2+ signaling, electrical activity, ROS, as well as hormone signaling networks. Understanding the roles of GLRs in integrating internal and external signaling for plant developmental adaptations to a changing environment will definitely help to enhance abiotic stress tolerance. The areas where sweet cherries can be grown economically in the world are limited. Sweet cherry production varies according to years and climatic conditions. The climate of Turkey is quite suitable for sweet cherry growing. It has been determined that vermicompost contains a high percentage of organic matter and increases the growth of the plants. In this context, it is aimed to obtain quality nursery trees for new orchards to be established by considering of the effect of vermicompost on maintaining proper soil structure and enhanced nutrient availability to the plants. In this study, the effects of vermicompost application on growth and development of sweet cherry saplings were investigated. In the research, 0900 Ziraat sweet cherry variety nursery trees were used, which are widely grown in Türkiye. 2.5, 5, 10, and 20% vermicompost applied to the saplings. According to the results of the study, the highest sapling diameter (10.07 mm); highest sapling length (33.18 cm); highest root fresh weight (146.50 g); highest root dry weight (46.47 g); highest stem fresh weight (88.80 g); highest trunk dry weight (46.47 g); highest root length (40.80 cm); the highest number of rootstocks (9.30 pcs.); highest shoot length (10.64 cm); highest shoot diameter (4.12 mm); the highest number of shoot leaves (8.86 pieces) was determined from 10% vermicompost application, and the highest leaf area (33.80 cm2 tree-1) and highest rootstock diameter (16.73 mm) from 5% vermicompost application. Sugar Will Eventually be Exported Transporters (SWEET) proteins function as sugar transporters that play key roles in plant growth, development, and biotic and abiotic stress responses. However, little is known about the SWEET gene family in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). In this study, 24 putative PvSWEET genes were identified. They can be categorized into four subgroups based on a phylogenetic analysis, exon–intron structure, cis-regulatory elements, and MEME motifs. A collinearity analysis showed that three pairs of segmental duplicated events were identified. The Phytozome database showed that 16 PvSWEET genes were highly expressed in reproductive organs. PvSWEET5 was expressed the most highly in all the tissues tested, while PvSWEET8/9/10/13 were undetectable in the datasets. The results of qRT-PCR analysis showed that PvSWEET24 was significantly up-regulated following treatment with NaCl, CdCl2, and HgCl2, whereas the PvSWEET5 and PvSWEET20 genes displayed a specific negative response to CdCl2 stress. Collectively, this study provides comprehensive information for the role of SWEET gene family in common bean and lays a solid foundation to elucidate the biological function of the PvSWEET gene family, as well as provide insights into the correlation between the PvSWEET genes and responses to metal stresses. The plant hormone auxin acts as a signaling molecule to regulate numerous developmental processes throughout all stages of plant growth. Understanding how auxin regulates various physiological and developmental processes has been a hot topic and an intriguing field. Recent studies have unveiled more molecular details into how diverse auxin responses function in every aspect of plant growth and development. In this review, we systematically summarized and classified the molecular mechanisms of diverse auxin responses, and comprehensively elaborated the characteristics and multilevel regulation mechanisms of the canonical transcriptional auxin response. On this basis, we described the characteristics and differences between different auxin responses. We also presented some auxin response genes that have been genetically modified in plant species and how their changes impact various traits of interest. Finally, we summarized some important aspects and unsolved questions of auxin responses that need to be focused on or addressed in future research. This review will help to gain an overall understanding of and some insights into the diverse molecular mechanisms of auxin responses in plant growth and development that are instrumental in harnessing genetic resources in molecular breeding of extant plant species. Progesterone is a steroid hormone that performs important functions in mammals. However, studies on its physiological functions in plants have gradually increased in recent years. Therefore, this review summarizes the regulatory functions of progesterone on plant growth and development, as well as its response to stress. Moreover, the plant metabolic processes of progesterone are also discussed. Overall, progesterone is ubiquitous in plants and can regulate numerous plant physiological processes at low concentrations. Since progesterone shares similar characteristics with plant hormones, it is expected to become a candidate for plant hormone. However, most of the current research on progesterone in plants is limited to the physiological level, and more molecular level research is needed to clarify progesterone signaling pathways. Cys2/His2-type Zinc Finger Proteins (C2H2-ZFPs) are known to play vital roles in the regulation of growth and development in plants. Nowadays, there are many critical concerns in the agricultural sector, including reduced productivity of plants due to various environmental factors. Hence, a continuous innovation of existing technologies is necessary. Among the available technologies for sustainable agriculture, nanotechnology is one of the more promising technologies and has a great scope for development in agriculture. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have attracted much attention due to their good properties and can be put into agriculture as nano-fertilizers, nano-growth regulators and nano-pesticides, although much remains to be explored about their mechanisms. Here, we review the literature on the interaction of ZnO NPs with plants through (i) uptake and transport pathways of ZnO NPs in plants. (ii) The mechanisms involved in improving growth, development and resistance. (iii) their effects on the rhizospheric environment. (iv) The toxic effects and mechanisms in plants. Our major conclusions are as follows: (1) they can be absorbed by the plant through the roots and leaves, with subsequent transformation. (2) moderate application can promote plant growth and mitigate stress, while excessive application can produce toxic effects. (3) the effects of them on the rhizospheric environment cannot be ignored. Background. The auxin indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) is a type of endogenous plant hormone with a low concentration in plants, but it plays an important role in their growth and development. The AUX/IAA gene family was found to be an early sensitive auxin gene with a complicated way of regulating growth and development in plants. The regulation of root growth and development by AUX/IAA family genes has been reported in Arabidopsis, rice and maize. Results. In this study, subcellular localization indicated that ZmIAA1-ZmIAA6 pri-marily played a role in the nucleus. A thermogram analysis showed that AUX/IAA genes were highly expressed in the roots, which was also confirmed by the maize tissue expression patterns. In maize overexpressing ZmIAA5, the length of the main root, the number of lateral roots, and the stalk height at the seedling stage were significantly increased compared with those of the wild type, while the EMS mutant zmiaa5 was significantly reduced. The total number of roots and the dry weight of maize overexpressing ZmIAA5 at the mature stage were also significantly increased compared with those of the wild type, while those of the mutant zmiaa5 was significantly reduced. Yeast one-hybrid experiments showed that ZmTCP15/16/17 could specifically bind to the ZmIAA5 promoter region. Bimolecular fluorescence complementation and yeast two-hybridization indicated an interaction between ZmIAA5 and ZmARF5. Conclusions. Taken together, the results of this study indicate that ZmIAA5 regulates maize root growth and development by interacting with ZmARF5 under the specific binding of ZmTCP15/16/17. The 14-3-3 proteins widely exist in almost all plant species. They specifically recognize and interact with phosphorylated target proteins, including protein kinases, phosphatases, transcription factors and functional proteins, offering an array of opportunities for 14-3-3s to participate in the signal transduction processes. 14-3-3s are multigene families and can form homo- and heterodimers, which confer functional specificity of 14-3-3 proteins. They are widely involved in regulating biochemical and cellular processes and plant growth and development, including cell elongation and division, seed germination, vegetative and reproductive growth, and seed dormancy. They mediate plant response to environmental stresses such as salt, alkaline, osmotic, drought, cold and other abiotic stresses, partially via hormone-related signalling pathways. Although many studies have reviewed the function of 14-3-3 proteins, recent research on plant 14-3-3s has achieved significant advances. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of the fundamental properties of 14-3-3 proteins and systematically summarize and dissect the emerging advances in understanding the roles of 14-3-3s in plant growth and development and abiotic stress responses. Plant hormones are critical chemicals that participate in almost all aspects of plant life by triggering cellular response cascades. FERONIA is one of the most well studied members in the subfamily of Catharanthus roseus receptor-like kinase1-like (CrRLK1Ls) hormones. It has been proved to be involved in many different processes with the discovery of its ligands, interacting partners, and downstream signaling components. A growing body of evidence shows that FERONIA serves as a hub to integrate inter- and intracellular signals in response to internal and external cues. Gibberellic acid (GA), a ubiquitous phytohormone, has various effects on regulators of plant growth and development. GAs promote growth by overcoming growth restraint mediated by DELLA proteins (DELLAs). DELLAs, in the GRAS family of plant-specific nuclear proteins, are nuclear transcriptional regulators harboring a unique N-terminal GA perception region for binding the GA receptor GIBBERELLIN INSENSITIVE DWARF1 (GID1) and a C-terminal GRAS domain necessary for GA repression activity via interaction with multiple regulatory proteins. The N-terminal conserved region of DELLAs evolved to form a mode of GID1/DELLA-mediated GA signaling originating in bryophytes and ferns. Binding of GA to GID1 increases the affinity between DELLAs and a SCF E3 ubiquitin–ligase complex, thus promoting the eventual destruction of DELLAs by the 26S proteasome. DELLAs negatively regulate GA response by releasing transcription factors to directly activate downstream genes and indirectly regulate GA biosynthesis genes increasing GA responsiveness and feedback control by promoting GID1 transcription. GA communicates extensively with other plant hormones and uses crosstalk to regulate plant growth and development. In this review, we summarize current understanding of evolutionary DELLA-mediated gibberellin signaling and functional diversification of DELLA, focusing primarily on interactions of DELLAs with diverse phytohormones. Brassinosteroid (BR) signaling leads to the nuclear accumulation of the BRASSINAZOLE-RESISTANT 1 (BZR1) transcription factor, which plays dual roles in activating or repressing the expression of thousands of genes. BZR1 represses gene expression by recruiting histone deacetylases, but how it activates transcription of BR-induced genes remains unclear. Here, we show that BR reshapes the genome-wide chromatin accessibility landscape, increasing the accessibility of BR-induced genes and reducing the accessibility of BR-repressed genes in Arabidopsis. BZR1 physically interacts with the BRAHMA-associated SWI/SNF (BAS)-chromatin-remodeling complex on the genome and selectively recruits the BAS complex to BR-activated genes. Depletion of BAS abrogates the capacities of BZR1 to increase chromatin accessibility, activate gene expression, and promote cell elongation without affecting BZR1's ability to reduce chromatin accessibility and expression of BR-repressed genes. Together, these data identify that BZR1 recruits the BAS complex to open chromatin and to mediate BR-induced transcriptional activation of growth-promoting genes. Background: Light quality significantly affects plant growth and development, photosynthesis, and carbon and nitrogen metabolism. Apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) is a widely cultivated and economically important fruit crop worldwide. However, there are still few studies on the effects of different light qualities on the growth and development of apple seedlings. Results: In this study, we explored the effects of blue and red light treatments on the growth and development, photosynthetic characteristics, leaf chloroplast ultrastructure, and carbon and nitrogen metabolism of apple seedlings. Blue light significantly inhibited apple plant growth and leaf extension, but it promoted the development of leaf tissue structures and chloroplasts and positively affected leaf stomatal conductance, the transpiration rate, and photosynthetic efficiency. The red light treatment promoted apple plant growth and root development, but it resulted in loosely organized leaf palisade tissues and low chlorophyll contents. The blue and red light treatments enhanced the accumulation of ammonium nitrogen in apple seedlings. Moreover, the blue light treatment significantly promoted nitrogen metabolism. Additionally, an RNA-seq analysis revealed that both blue light and red light can significantly up-regulate the expression of genes related to carbon and nitrogen metabolism. Blue light can also promote amino acid synthesis and flavonoid metabolism, whereas red light can induce plant hormone signal transduction. The expression of a gene encoding a bHLH transcription factor (MYC2-like) was significantly up-regulated in response to blue light, implying it may be important for blue light-mediated plant development. Conclusions: Considered together, blue and red light have important effects on apple growth, carbon and nitrogen metabolism. As an emerging research hotspot in nanotechnology, luminescent nanomaterials (LNMs) have attracted much attention due to their unique properties. Meanwhile, their potential release into the environment has also been investigated by researchers. Plants, as an essential part of the ecosystem, are the starting point of bioaccumulation. Thus, to understand the interaction between LNMs and plants would be one of the critical aspects of risk assessment. Currently, there are still very few reports in this field, where a potential guidance is urgently necessary. Bearing this in mind, herein, based on our own research experience, we summarize the effects of four typical kinds of LNMs (quantum dots, carbon dots, upconversion nanoparticles, and metal nanoclusters) on plant growth and development, including the transport of materials in plants and their toxicity to plants, as well as the according experimental techniques. [Objective] This paper aimed to the problem that application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and long-term continuous culti vation mode in the industry caused the yield and quality of Lycium barbarum L had declined in recent years, and the effects of different mi crobial agents on the growth and development of the L. barbarum L. and fruit yield and quality were studied. [Method] Ningqi No. 7 L. barba rum L. was used as experimental material, and the field trials with no microbial agents as a control were conducted by the application of Tl, T2, T3 three microbial agents. [ Result] Each treatment had different degrees of promoting effects on the vegetative growth, reproductive growth, yield and quality of L. barbarum L. plants. Microbial agents could significantly increase the survival rate of first-year L. barbarum L. seedlings, and the amount of roots and branch growth by 9. 06% - 57. 84% and 4. 76% - 54. 9%, respectively; Microbial agents could in crease the number of branches, branch growth and SPAD value of fourth-instar L. barbarum L. plants by 29. 9% - 87. 09%, 7. 5% - 18. 3%, and flower formation rate, fruit setting rate, 100-seed weight and yield by 2. 07% - 18. 87%, 3.19% - 13. 63%, 0.57% - 4. 92%, 29. 7% - 52. 7%, respectively; Especially, T2 had the most significant effect, compared with other treatments, the amount of branches, flower formation rate and yield were increased by 30. 05%, 12. 23% and 4. 45%. Microbial agents could significantly improve fruit quality and increase the content of polysaccharides, betaine, total flavonoids, and carotene in L. barbarum L. fruit by 4. 55% 25%, 25. 5% - 43. 67%, 12. 5% - 58%, and 2. 8 - 3. 6 times, respectively. Especially, Tl had the most significant effect on the improvement of quality indicators, compared with other treatments, the content of polysaccharides, betaine and carotene increased significantly by 5. 77%, 8. 52% and 23. 78%. [ Conclusion] Comprehensive evaluation of the analysis results showed that the three combinations of microbial agents tested had a certain positive effect on growth of L. barbarum L. . T2 had the most significant effect on tree growth, yield and economic benefits, Tl had the best effect on fruit quality, and it could be used for reference and promotion according to production needs in production practice, Tl and T2 could be used together to achieve the effect of improving quality and increasing production. NAC (NAM, ATAF1-2, and CUC2) transcription factors (TFs) play a vital role in plant growth and development, as well as in plant response to biotic and abiotic stressors (Duan et al., 2019; Guerin et al., 2019). Chrysanthemum is a plant with strong stress resistance and adaptability; therefore, a systematic study of NAC TFs in chrysanthemum is of great significance for plant breeding. In this study, 153 putative NAC TFs were identified based on the Chrysanthemum nankingense genome. According to the NAC family in Arabidopsis and rice, a rootless phylogenetic tree was constructed, in which the 153 CnNAC TFs were divided into two groups and 19 subfamilies. Moreover, the expression levels of 12 CnNAC TFs belonging to the OsNAC7 subfamily were analyzed in C. nankingense under osmotic and salt stresses, and different tissues were tested during different growth periods. The results showed that these 12 OsNAC7 subfamily members were involved in the regulation of root and stem growth, as well as in the regulation of drought and salt stresses. Finally, we investigated the function of the CHR00069684 gene, and the results showed that CHR00069684 could confer improved salt and low temperature resistance, enhance ABA sensitivity, and lead to early flowering in tobacco. It was proved that members of the OsNAC7 subfamily have dual functions including the regulation of resistance and the mediation of plant growth and development. This study provides comprehensive information on analyzing the function of CnNAC TFs, and also reveals the important role of OsNAC7 subfamily genes in response to abiotic stress and the regulation of plant growth. Black currant cultivation is in continuous expansion, with importance in human nutrition and a high degree of suitability for industrial processing. The nutritional, organoleptic, and pharmaceutical qualities of its fruits represent a great source of natural antioxidants, vitamins, and phenols. We have tested the specific reaction of three black currant varieties to foliar fertilizers in order to obtain two growth models. Each variety have a specific response to fertilizers. Application of Kombimax lead to the highest increase during the vegetation period and 72 cm length of branches at the end of vegetation period. Ascovigor and Mikromix produces 3–4 cm increases in branches length compared to control. N, K2O, and CaO from fertilizer recipe act synergically for the final development of branches. The growth model based on branches length at 14 days add 0.97 cm for each existent cm. The complex model of growth add 2.44 cm for each mg of CaO existent in fertilizer recipe. Linear regressions show a growth potential of 0.97 cm/1 cm of branches at 14 days. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Calvin cycle plays a crucial role in carbon fixation which provides the precursors of organic macromolecules for plant growth and development. Currently, no gene involved in Calvin cycle has been identified in monocotyledonous plants through mutant or/and map-based cloning approach. Results: Here, we isolated a low-tillering mutant, c6635, in rice (Oryza sativa). The mutant displayed light green leaves and intensely declined pigment contents and photosynthetic capacity at early growth stage. Moreover, its individual plant showed a much smaller size, and most individuals produced only two tillers. At mature stage, its productive panicles, grain number and seed setting rate were significantly decreased, which lead to a sharp reduction of the grain yield. We confirmed that a single nucleotide mutation in LOC_Os04g16680 gene encoding sedoheptulose 1,7-bisphosphatase (SBPase) involved in Calvin cycle was responsible for the mutant phenotype of c6635 through map-based cloning, MutMap analysis and complementation experiments. Sequence analysis suggested that the point mutation caused an amino acid change from Gly-364 to Asp at the C-terminal of SBPase. In addition, OsSBPase gene was mainly expressed in leaf, and the encoded protein was located in chloroplast. The mutation of OsSBPase could significantly affect expression levels of some key genes involved in Calvin cycle. Conclusions: We successfully identified a SBPase gene in monocotyledonous plants. Meanwhile, we demonstrated that a single nucleotide substitution at the 3′-end of this gene severely affects plant growth and grain yield, implying that the Gly-364 at the C-terminal of SBPase could play an important role in SBPase function in rice. In this study, a process was designed, in which a lemon seed grew into a seedling, using the inquiry-based science learning approach. This aimed to increase the overall development of the scientific process skills of children and their sensitivity to nature. The germination, growth and development of a plant were meticulously and systematically observed in a long period from seed to seedling. This process contributed to the children's integration of scientific process skills based on observation and measurement and structuring of concepts related to germination, growth and development in science lessons. Inorganic orthophosphate (Pi), a major form of essential macronutrient phosphorus (P), is available in rhizosphere for acquisition and assimilation by plants. However, the limited availability of Pi in soils affects the growth and development of plants. In Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis), Phosphate Deficiency Response2 (AtPDR2) , interacts genetically with Low Phosphate Root1 (AtLPR1) in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and plays a key role in the inhibition of primary root growth (PRG) during Pi deficiency. However, the role of OsPDR2 , the homolog of AtPDR2 , either in roots response to Pi deficiency and/or in growth and development has not been elucidated as yet. Therefore, qRT-PCR was employed to determine the spatiotemporal effects and the availability of Pi on the expression of OsPDR2. OsPDR2 showed variable levels of relative expression pattern in vegetative and/or reproductive tissues analyzed at different stages of growth and development (5–17 weeks). Transient expression analysis revealed its subcellular localization to the ER. Further, the reverse genetics approach was employed for determining the function of OsPDR2 by generating RNAi lines (Ri2, Ri9, and Ri18). The study revealed significant inhibitory effects of RNAi-mediated suppression of OsPDR2 on the development of root, male reproductive traits, and yield. Moreover, 32P isotope labeling and split-root experiments under different Pi regime with RNAi lines revealed the function of OsPDR2 in regulating homeostasis of Pi. • Inorganic phosphate (Pi) is a key element for growth and development of plant. • OsPDR2 in O. sativa is a homolog of PDR2 but its role in Pi homeostasis not known. • OsPDR2 is induced and suppressed in Pi-deprived roots and shoot, respectively. • OsPDR2 also show variable expression in vegetative and reproductive traits (VRTs). • Knockdown of OsPDR2 revealed its effects on Pi homeostasis and on some of the VRTs. Background: The article discusses the use of domestic liquid bioorganic fertilizer («BioEcoGum») in the cultivation of corn in the south-east of Kazakhstan. Objectives: The aim of the work is to study the effect of seed treatment and foliar feeding during the vegetation period on the growth, development and yield of grain maize. Material and Methods: Field production experience was conducted on light chestnut soils according to the generally accepted methodology of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Soil samples were taken before sowing and after harvesting. The soil content of organic matter (humus), pH, gross and mobile forms of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were determined to study the dynamics of the nutritional regime. Hydride «Porumbeni 458» (Moldova) was cultivated for grain maize. Phenological observations and grain yield history were carried out. Results: Presowing treatment of corn seeds with a solution of liquid bioorganic fertilizer «BioEcoGum» increases germination by 10-30%. Double-folded top dressing of corn plants enhances plant growth and development, increases grain yield up to 75%, contributes to an increase in root biomass by 50%. «BioEcoGum» liquid bioorganic fertilizer is produced from biocompost by enriching macro- and microelements in a form accessible to plants, which increases stress resistance, stimulates plant growth, and increases the grain yield of corn. Conclusion: According to the results of production tests, bioorganic liquid fertilizer «BioEcoGum» is recommended for widespread use in the southern regions of Kazakhstan when cultivating grain maize. Mycorrhizae are fungal symbionts forming mutualistic relationships with plant roots. This study was undertaken to evaluate the overall influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on the overall growth and development of carrot plant. Surface-sterilized seeds of carrot were sown in earthen pots filled with sterile soil. Half of the pots were inoculated with AMF spores; the other half without any AMF inoculation represented control. After germination inoculated plants, along with the controls, were sampled at 20, 40, 60 and 80 days of growth after seedling emergence. There is a progressive net increase in growth with each 20-day interval after seedling emergence. Storage roots of carrot had a higher level of metabolites and nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in mycorrhiza colonized plants than the control. High performance liquid chromatography analysis indicated an increase in the carbohydrate fractions in AMF-inoculated roots. This study was carried out at Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) formerly Botswana College of Agriculture (BCA) under an 80% net shade to investigate the effect of growing media comprising cocopeat, hygromix and germination mix on growth and development of sweet pepper (Capsicum annum L.) seedlings. The experiment was set up in a completely randomized design (CRD) with each treatment (growing medium) replicated four times. Growth parameters measured were; seedling emergence, plant height, leaf number and area, and seedling biomasses (both fresh and dry). Seedling emergence from hygromix and germination mix was significantly (P<0.05) higher than cocopeat in the first 15 days whereas a non-significant (P>0.05) treatment response was observed from day 16 to 20 across treatments. Plant height, leaf number and area, and seedling biomasses were significantly (P<0.01) higher in hygromix and germination mix as compared to cocopeat with hygromix revealing superior performance than germination mix. Hygromix and germination mix can be used to propagate sweet pepper because they enhanced seedling emergence, growth and development. Seedlings emerged in cocopeat, but the seedlings remained stunted suggesting that the medium needs further investigation on how it can sustain seedling growth and development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Water deficit conditions are a bearing on plant growth and development leading to diminished crop productivity. However, improving the crop productivity is need of the time to sustain the food security under ever increasing world population. Drought episodes are increasing with varying intensity and duration. Drought stress imposes alterations in crucial plant growth and developmental processes, including germination, plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf size and area, dry matter production and partitioning, flower and fruit production, and maturity. Nonetheless, plants show some morphological changes to cope with drought stress by lowering water loss, enhanced water uptake and maintenance of tissue water status. Some plants complete their life cycle early before the onset of drought to escape water deficit conditions. Identification of effects of drought stress on morphological attributes and morphological changes in response to drought can be promising for selection and breeding of drought resistant genotypes. Fungi interact with plants in different ways in nature; however, it remains largely unclear if fungus gene may affect plant growth and development. Basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors are found in almost all organisms including plants and fungi. By using bioinformatics analysis, we found that there are 12 genes inPleurotus ostreatuswhich encode bHLH transcription factors, namelyP. ostreatus basic helix-loop-helix1through12(PobHLH1-PobHLH12). By taking PobHLH1, 2, 5 and 8 as examples, we examined whether PobHLHs may regulate gene expression and plant growth and development when expressed in Arabidopsis. We found that all the four PobHLHs examined were localized in the nucleus; however, PobHLH2, 5 and 8 activated whereas PobHLH1 repressed reporter gene expression in transfected protoplasts. On the other hand, ectopic expression ofPobHLH5or8inhibited plant growth and development, whereas transgenic plants expressingPobHLH1andPobHLH2were largely morphologically similar to the wild-type plants. ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL5 (HY5), a member of the bZIP transcription factor family, inhibits hypocotyl growth and lateral root development, and promotes pigment accumulation in a light-dependent manner in Arabidopsis . Recent research on its role in different processes such as hormone, nutrient, abiotic stress (abscisic acid, salt, cold), and reactive oxygen species signaling pathways clearly places HY5 at the center of a transcriptional network hub. HY5 regulates the transcription of a large number of genes by directly binding to cis -regulatory elements. Recently, HY5 has also been shown to activate its own expression under both visible and UV-B light. Moreover, HY5 acts as a signal that moves from shoot to root to promote nitrate uptake and root growth. Here, we review recent advances on HY5 research in diverse aspects of plant development and highlight still open questions that need to be addressed in the near future for a complete understanding of its function in plant signaling and beyond. AtDjB1 is a mitochondria-located J-protein in Arabidopsis thaliana. It is involved in the regulation of plant growth and development; however, the exact mechanisms remain to be determined. We performed comparison analyses of phenotypes, auxin signalling, redox status, mitochondrial structure and function using wild-type plants, AtDjB1 mutants, rescued AtDjB1 mutants by AtDjB1 or YUCCA2 (an auxin synthesis gene), and AtDjB1 overexpression plants. AtDjB1 mutants (atj1-1 or atj1-4) exhibited inhibition of growth and development and reductions in the level of IAA and the expression of YUCCA genes compared to wild-type plants. The introduction of AtDjB1 or YUCCA2 into atj1-1 largely rescued phenotypic defects and the IAA level, indicating that AtDjB1 probably regulates growth and development via auxin. Furthermore, atj1-1 plants displayed a significant reduction in amount/activity of mitochondrial complex I compared to wild-type plants; this resulted in the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, exogenous H2O2 markedly inhibited the expression of YUCCA genes in wild-type plants. In contrast, the reducing agent ascorbate increased the expression of YUCCA genes and IAA level in atj1-1 plants, indicating that the low auxin level observed in atj1-1 was probably due to the high oxidation status. Overall, the data presented here suggest that AtDjB1 is required for mitochondrial complex I activity and regulates growth and development through ROS-mediated auxin signalling in Arabidopsis. Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) participate in diverse regulations of plant growth and environmental stress responses. In this work, an Arabidopsis hnRNP of unknown function, AtRNP1 , was investigated. We found that AtRNP1 gene is highly expressed in rosette and cauline leaves, and slightly induced under drought, salt, osmotic and ABA stresses. AtRNP1 protein is localized to both the nucleus and cytoplasm. We performed homologous overexpression of AtRNP1 and found that the transgenic plants showed shortened root length and plant height, and accelerated flowering. In addition, the transgenic plants also showed reduced tolerance to drought, salt, osmotic and ABA stresses. Further studies revealed that under both normal and stress conditions, the proline contents in the transgenic plants are markedly decreased, associated with reduced expression levels of a proline synthase gene and several stress-responsive genes.
