This scoping review explores the causal relationship between morphological instruction and reading development in young L2 learners by synthesizing 12 primary studies published between 2004 and 2019 (N = 1,535). These studies focused on reading English as the target language and involved participants between kindergarten and Grade 12 from four countries (China, Egypt, Singapore, and the USA). Findings suggested that (a) morphological instruction led to consistent and positive gains in L2 children’s morphological awareness and vocabulary knowledge, and the effect sizes (Cohen’s ds) ranged from small to large; and (b) the relationship between morphological instruction and other outcomes such as phonological awareness, word reading accuracy, word reading fluency, spelling, and reading comprehension was inconclusive. Notably, transfer effects of L2 English morphological instruction on novel word learning in English or on reading development in an additional language were only examined and observed in four primary studies. Discussion was provided regarding future instructional and research design.

A wide variety of tests measures phonemic and phonological awareness in different languages. There are very few tools of phonemic and phonological awareness in Arabic language. Such tools help to identify students’ weaknesses and strengths especially in early stages of their schooling for better instruction and intervention. Although Arabic phonetically maps between letters and sounds, it is not an easy language to read because of challenges inherent to the structure of the language itself. This paper explores a validation study of Arabic phonological awareness tests for kindergartners and first graders in Oman. Two different tests of phonological awareness and common skills were developed for two samples: kindergartners (n = 113) and first graders (n = 70). Results support the validity and reliability of the two tests and suggest that they can be used as diagnostic tools to identify children with low phonological awareness and help initiate appropriate reading intervention programs for them.

O presente artigo objetiva apresentar uma contextualização da história dos métodos de alfabetização no Brasil e uma reflexão do método fônico implementado por decreto no Plano Nacional de Alfabetização. O intuito é mostrar, a partir dos estudos de Mortatti (2006), que a discussão acerca de um método salvacionista existe desde quando a escola foi universalizada, no final do século XIX. Desde então se defende a implementação de um método em detrimento de outro. A Política Nacional de Alfabetização aposta no método fônico para erradicar o analfabetismo no Brasil e este artigo apresenta reflexões acerca deste método, que defende a consciência fonológica como pré-requisito para que o sujeito seja alfabetizado, com o propósito de mostrar que a escolha do método deve estar atrelada a necessidade do indivíduo e que a apropriação da leitura e da escrita supera o processo de instrumentalização.

Purpose: to characterize the reading alterations in individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Methods: PubMed and SciELO platforms from 2006 to 2016 with the keywords "reading" and "attention deficit hyperactivity disorder", with their equivalents in Portuguese, were searched. Results: seven hundred ninety articles were found in the two databases, of which 119 were relevant. After a full reading, twenty five articles were selected for the analysis, according to relevance and other exclusion/inclusion criteria. In 21 of the studies, individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder presented worse performance in reading, as compared with their peers. Of these, 14 studies identified a delay in some skills that are important for reading: processing speed, reading accuracy, phonological awareness, comprehension and/or orthographic processing. Conclusion: these results corroborate other studies that have verified the presence of a deficit in academic performance, especially in reading skills, in individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, that may persist in their adulthood. RESUMO Objetivo: caracterizar as alterações de leitura presentes em indivíduos com Transtorno do Déficit de Atenção e Hiperatividade. Métodos: foram realizadas buscas de publicações nas plataformas PubMed e SciELO de 2006 a 2016 com as palavras-chaves “leitura” e “transtorno do déficit de atenção e hiperatividade”, com seus equivalentes em inglês. Resultados: foi encontrado 790 artigos nas duas bases de dados, nas quais 119 eram mais relevantes. Vinte e cinco artigos foram selecionados para a análise, de acordo com a relevância e outros critérios de exclusão/inclusão. Em 21 publicações os indivíduos com Transtorno do Déficit de Atenção e Hiperatividade apresentaram pior desempenho em leitura, comparando com seus pares. Desses, 14 estudos identificaram atraso em algumas habilidades relevantes para a leitura: velocidade de processamento, precisão de leitura, consciência fonológica, compreensão e/ou processamento ortográfico. Conclusão: estes resultados corroboram outros estudos que verificaram a presença de déficits nas habilidades de leitura em indivíduos com Transtorno do Déficit de Atenção e Hiperatividade que podem permanecer até a fase adulta.

Purpose: to investigate the relation between forward masking and cognitive-language skills in children as a function of literacy stage. Methods: twenty-seven children registered in literacy stage at public schools, aged from 6 to 9 years old, with no learning difficulties or audiological problems reported, participated in this study. Frequency Following Responses were registered in two test conditions: 1) /da/ alone; 2) /da/ presented 4 milliseconds after a speech noise. Two language protocols were applied: a cognitive-linguistic skills protocol and a phonological awareness one. Results: forward masking was evident in Frequency Following Responses of all children regardless of literacy stage. Frequency Following Responses latencies in both testing conditions showed no difference among participants’ age. Cognitive-language skills scores were below those expected for all children, with significant improvement noticed as a function of age. No correlation between language performance and forward masking was found. Conclusion: there was no relation between forward masking and cognitive-language skills in children, as a function of literacy stage.

RESUMO Objetivo O presente estudo tem como objetivo descrever o perfil de adultos analfabetos funcionais em tarefas de leitura, consciência fonológica (CF), e nomeação automática rápida (NAR); bem como correlacionar o desempenho dessas tarefas. Além disso, buscou-se compreender quanto que o desempenho em CF e NAR predizem o resultado em leitura de palavras e pseudopalavras. Método Foram avaliados 23 adultos analfabetos funcionais em tarefas de inteligência, leitura, CF e NAR. Resultados Os participantes apresentaram dificuldades em CF, tendo pobre desempenho em tarefas que envolviam análise e manipulação de fonemas. Em NAR, apresentaram maior facilidade na nomeação de itens alfanuméricos. Em relação à leitura, houve dificuldades no processamento fonológico, apresentando erros por troca fonológica. Análises de correlação indicaram que a leitura apresentou maiores correlações com NAR do que com CF. Por fim, a análise de regressão indicou que o desempenho em NAR é capaz de explicar mais da metade do resultado em leitura dos participantes. Conclusão De modo geral, o perfil dos adultos analfabetos funcionais se caracteriza por apresentar prejuízos nas habilidades avaliadas, sendo esses prejuízos mais evidentes em CF ao nível dos fonemas, bem como na nomeação de itens não-alfanuméricos. Além disso, os resultados em NAR explicam melhor os resultados de leitura de palavras e pseudopalavras do que os resultados em CF. ABSTRACT Purpose The study’s purpose is to describe the cognitive profile of a sample of functionally illiterate individuals in reading, phonological awareness (PA) and rapid automatized naming (RAN), as well as to correlate the performance of these tasks. Moreover, it sought to understand how the performances in PA and RAN predict results in reading of words and pseudowords. Methods 23 functionally illiterate adults were assessed for intelligence, reading, PA and RAN tasks. Results Participants showed difficulties in PA, performing poorly in tasks involving phoneme analysis and manipulation. In RAN, they found it easier to name alphanumeric items. Regarding reading, they presented difficulties in phonological processing, with errors caused by phonological exchange. Correlation analyses indicated that reading presented higher correlations with RAN than PA. Finally, a regression analysis indicated that performance in RAN can account for more than half of participants’ reading results. Conclusion In general, the profile of functionally illiterate adults presents impairment in the abilities assessed that are more evident in PA at phoneme levels as well as in naming of non-alphanumerical items. Moreover, the results in RAN explain those in word and pseudowords reading better than the results in PA.

Purpose: to verify the influence of bilingualism on the development of phonological awareness. Methods: this is an integrative literature review, built on the hypothesis of the relationship between bilingualism and its influence on the development of phonological skills in children. The construction was carried out in the databases: CAPES, Pubmed, Scielo, Eric, and LILACS, using the following free terms in Portuguese and English: bilingualism AND phonology, bilingualism AND phonological awareness and bilingualism AND phonological skills. The sample selection criteria were: a) scientific papers published in national and international journals with full text, free and available in the database; b) in English and Portuguese; c) that addressed the theme in the last five years. For the selection of the papers, reading the title, followed by the summary, and finally, reading the papers potentially relevant for review were considered. Results: following the eligibility criteria, 2,578 papers were identified. Of these, 87 were selected for complete analysis. The final sample consisted of eight papers, two of them being written by Brazilian authors. Of these, five showed better phonological awareness skills in bilinguals and two in monolinguals. Studies point out that age can be a predictor of language skills and better phonological awareness skills associated with good reading development. Bilinguals, early exposed to this skill, develop reading by phonology and those with late exposition, by semantics. Conclusion: the present study demonstrated that there are still controversies regarding the impacts of bilingualism on phonological awareness, including on the benefits of phonological awareness. RESUMO Objetivo: verificar a influência do bilinguismo no desenvolvimento da Consciência Fonológica. Métodos: trata-se de uma revisão de literatura integrativa, construída a partir da hipótese de questionamento sobre a relação entre o bilinguismo e sua influência no desenvolvimento das habilidades fonológicas em crianças. A construção foi realizada nas bases de dados: Periódico CAPES, Pubmed, Scielo, Eric e LILACS, utilizando os seguintes termos livres em português e inglês: bilingualism AND phonology, bilingualism AND phonological awareness e bilingualism AND phonological skills. Os critérios de elegibilidade foram: a) artigos publicados em periódicos nacionais e internacionais com texto completo, gratuito e disponível na base de dados; b) em inglês e português; c) que abordassem a temática nos últimos cinco anos. Para a seleção dos artigos foram considerados a leitura pelo título, seguida do resumo e finalmente, a leitura dos artigos completos, potencialmente relevantes para a revisão. Resultados: seguindo os critérios de elegibilidade foram identificados 2.578 artigos. Destes, 87 foram selecionados para a leitura completa. A amostra final foi composta por 8 artigos, sendo 2 artigos de autores brasileiros. Destes, cinco artigos apresentaram melhor habilidade de consciência fonológica nos bilíngues e dois nos monolíngues. Estudos apontam que a idade pode ser um preditor de domínio da língua e de melhores habilidades de consciência fonológica associada ao bom desenvolvimento da leitura. Bilíngues expostos precocemente desenvolvem a leitura pela fonologia e os expostos tardiamente pela semântica. Conclusão: o presente estudo demonstrou que ainda há controvérsias quanto aos impactos do bilinguismo na consciência fonológica, inclusive sobre os benefícios na consciência fonológica.

Neste estudo procura-se identificar o contributo das operações lógicas piagetianas (seriação, classificação e inclusão de classes), da consciência fonológica e do conhecimento das letras para a aprendizagem da leitura. Foi efetuado um estudo longitudinal, do final ano Pré-Escolar ao 2º ano de escolaridade, junto de uma amostra de 116 crianças, distribuídas por dois grupos: as que completavam 6 anos até o dia 15 de setembro do ano de matrícula e as que os completavam após esta data. No que diz respeito ao reconhecimento de palavras, no 1º ano a seriação surge como o melhor preditor, mas, no 2º ano, os melhores preditores foram a consciência fonológica e o conhecimento das letras. No que concerne à compreensão da leitura, a seriação e classificação foram os melhores preditores. Não se registraram diferenças de desempenho em leitura em função da idade, o que não confirma a hipótese de imaturidade avançada por muito professores., This study aims to identify the contribution of Piagetian logic operations (seriation, classification and class inclusion), phonological awareness and knowledge of letters for learning to read. A longitudinal study was carried out, from the final year of Pre-School to the 2nd year of schooling, together with a sample of 116 children, divided into two groups: those who completed 6 years until September 15 of the year of enrollment and the who completed them after that date. In terms of word recognition, in the 1st year, serialization is the best predictor, but in the 2nd year, the best predictors were phonological awareness and knowledge of letters. In reading comprehension seriation and classification were the best predictors. The Klinefelter syndrome is a chromosomal aneuploidy caused by additional X chromosomes in men. The diagnosis is made by clinical observation and karyotype examination. Besides other characteristics, the phenotype involves infertility, hypogonadism, gynecomastia, and cognitive alterations, mainly in the language domain. This paper describes the case of a teenager with Klinefelter syndrome and history of difficulties in the learning process, behavioral and communication problems. The ethical guidelines were followed in the present report. The cognitive-communicative, pragmatic and syntactic profile was drawn from the speech and neuropsychological evaluations. The speech-language assessment showed deficits in expression and comprehension. Difficulties were also found in phonological awareness, mathematical operations, reading and writing, access to the lexicon, alterations in pragmatics and occasionally, in syntactics. The neuropsychological evaluation indicated impairments in tasks that require the identification of similarities, establishment of cause-effect relationships and analogies, demonstrating a compromised reasoning for logical operations, with intellectual level incompatible with the chronological age. This interdisciplinary clinical study favors intervention approaches in rehabilitation, to maximize the potential of the individuals affected, contributing to improve their quality of life.

In the acquisition of a foreign language, one of the fundamental as­pects is the development of learner’s phonological awareness, that is, one must develop their ability to ‘think about’ and ‘manipulate’ the sounds of language (ALVES, 2012). In this sense, the present study aims at analyzing a textbook of Portuguese as an additional / foreign language (PLA / PLE), in order to (1) verify opportuni­ties for phonological awareness development in the manual and (2) propose activities for the development of phonological awareness in integrated tasks. These tasks were planned with the scope of assisting the learner in understanding the functioning of the lan­guage and culture in acquisition, as well as the variable processes of Brazilian Portuguese. The analysis of the manual is based on Alves (2012), ALLEGRO (2014), JANOWSKA (2014), TORRE­SAN (2010), PUREN (2014), CALABRÒ (2015). The obtained results allow us to conclude that, despite the opportunities for eli­citing phonetical and phonological aspects that the manual offers, these opportunities are very limited to auditory discrimination and pronunciation training, and there is neither room for discussion of phonological variation in Portuguese spoken in Brazil, nor any pro­posals for activities that help the student to think about phonologi­cal patterns that characterize Brazilian Portuguese. Na aquisição de uma língua estrangeira, um dos aspectos funda­mentais é o desenvolvimento da consciência fonológica do apren­diz, ou seja, é preciso desenvolver a sua capacidade de ‘refletir’ e ‘manipular’ os sons da língua (ALVES, 2012). Nesse sentido, o presente estudo propõe-se a analisar um livro didático de português como língua adicional/estrangeira (PLA/PLE), a fim de (1) verificar as oportunidades de desenvolvimento de consciência fonológica no manual e (2) propor atividades de desenvolvimento de consciência fonológica em tarefas integradas. Essas tarefas foram planejadas com o escopo de auxiliar o aprendiz na compreensão do funciona­mento da língua e da cultura em aquisição, bem como dos processos variáveis do português do Brasil. A análise do manual é feita com base em ALVES (2012), ALLEGRO (2014), JANOWSKA (2014), TORRESAN (2010), PUREN (2014) e CALABRÒ (2015). Os re­sultados obtidos permitem-nos concluir que, apesar das oportuni­dades de elicitação de aspectos fonético-fonológicos que o manual oferece, essas oportunidades estão bastante circunscritas à discrimi­nação auditiva e ao treino de pronúncia, não havendo espaço para discussão de variação fonológica no português falado no Brasil nem propostas de atividades que ajudem o estudante a refletir sobre pa­drões fonológicos que caracterizam o português brasileiro.

Purpose: to compare the performance of students with dyslexia, intellectual disability and ADHD on the skills of phonological awareness, phonological access to the mental lexicon, and phonological working memory. Methods: this is a descriptive, cross sectional and quantitative study. The sample was composed of 32 students, divided into the following groups: G1 - students with dyslexia; G2 - students with ADHD; G3 - students with intellectual disability. The children were assessed on their skills of phonological awareness, phonological working memory, and phonological access to the mental lexicon. A descriptive and inferential analysis was made, using the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: statistically significant differences were observed among the three groups on the phonological working memory skills for pseudowords, forward digit repetition, and backward digit repetition; phonological awareness on syllable level, phoneme level, test total score, and digits subtest of the rapid automatized naming test. Through the descriptive analysis, it was observed that G1 had the best results on all the skills assessed, followed by G2 and G3 Conclusion: differences were found on the skills of phonological working memory and phonological awareness among the groups of students presented with dyslexia, ADHD and intellectual disability. RESUMO Objetivo: comparar o desempenho de escolares com de dislexia, transtorno do desenvolvimento intelectual e TDAH nas habilidades de consciência fonológica, acesso fonológico ao léxico mental e memória operacional fonológica. Métodos: estudo de caráter descritivo, transversal e quantitativo. A amostra foi composta por 32 escolares, subdivididos nos seguintes grupos: G1 - escolares com dislexia; G2 - escolares com TDAH; G3 - escolares com transtorno do desenvolvimento intelectual. Foram avaliadas as habilidades de consciência fonológica, memória operacional fonológica e acesso fonológico ao léxico mental. Foi realizada análise descritiva e inferencial. Utilizou-se teste não paramétrico de Kruskal-Wallis. Resultados: foram observadas diferenças estatisticamente significantes nas habilidades de memória operacional fonológica de pseudopalavras, dígitos ordem direta e dígitos ordem inversa; consciência fonológica no nível de sílaba, fonema, no total da prova e no subteste de dígitos na prova de nomeação automática rápida entre os três grupos. De forma descritiva, observou-se que o G1 obteve os melhores resultados em todas as habilidades avaliadas, seguido do G2 e G3. Conclusão: foram encontradas diferenças nas habilidades de memória operacional fonológica e consciência fonológica entre os grupos de estudantes com dislexia, TDAH e deficiência intelectual.

Deficits in EFL teachers’ proficiency have surfaced recently as one of the possible factors contributing to children’s reading problems at their early encounters with literacy. Phonological awareness (PA) has dominated specialists’ interests well-timed with escalating reports containing more provoking evidence connecting children's reading disability with deficiencies in PA. This paper aims at investigating the impact of perceived proficiency, GPA, and gender of prospective teachers on shaping their future reading instruction detectable by prospective teachers' PA beliefs, awareness and knowledge. Towards this end, a four-section survey was administered to 158 pre-service EFL teachers. Results confirmed significant differences related to knowledge and beliefs at the expense of awareness.

Purpose: to present a new application for mobile devices, referred to as Desembaralhando, for intervention in the problem of dyslexic children mirror writring. Methods: the development of the application is the result of a set of clinical and speech therapy information and experiences, which points out frequency of letter mirroring as a challenging problem in children with dyslexia. The application, developed in the light of the multisensory approach, was created by a multidisciplinary team of computer scientists, a game designer and a speech therapist, in order to meet users requirements, such as appropriate fonts and colors. Results: the activities stimulate phonological awareness skills from the association between images and words, audio aids, as well as an original function that is the rotational movement of letters b/d and a/e, which facilitates the perception of the visual layout of the letters. Conclusions: guidelines such as the choice of typography and interface colors appropriate to dyslexic children are used to favor intervention, in order to minimize the difficulties of these children regarding letters mirroring. RESUMO Objetivo: apresentar um novo aplicativo desenvolvido para dispositivos móveis, denominado Desembaralhando, para a intervenção no problema do espelhamento de letras por crianças disléxicas. Métodos: o desenvolvimento do aplicativo é resultado de um conjunto de informações de experiências fonoaudiológicas, que apontam a ocorrência de espelhamentos de letras como um problema desafiador em crianças com dislexia. O aplicativo, desenvolvido à luz da abordagem multissensorial, foi criado por uma equipe multidisciplinar composta de cientistas da computação, designer de jogos e fonoaudióloga e foi projetado para atender requisitos sintonizados com o público-alvo, como fontes e cores apropriadas. Resultados: as atividades desenvolvidas estimulam as habilidades de consciência fonológica por meio da associação entre imagem e palavra, recursos de áudio, além de uma funcionalidade original, que é o movimento de rotação das letras b/d e a/e, que facilita a percepção do traçado visual das letras. Conclusões: diretrizes tais como a escolha da tipografia e cores de interface, adequadas a crianças disléxicas, são utilizadas para favorecer a intervenção para minimizar as dificuldades dessas crianças no âmbito do espelhamento de letras.

O trabalho apresenta uma análise da escrita inicial, buscando identificar evidências da influência de processos fonológicos do português brasileiro no processo de aquisição do código escrito. O foco do trabalho é identificar, na escrita das crianças, indícios de hipercorreção baseada em três fenômenos fonológicos presentes na fala: a harmonia vocálica, o alçamento vocálico e a semivocalização da líquida lateral em posição pós-vocálica. O trabalho parte da seguinte questão: será que no momento em que a criança se depara com o código escrito e percebe que as letras nem sempre apresentam uma relação direta com a forma como são pronunciadas (ou seja, um ‘i’ falado nem sempre será um ‘i’ na escrita), além de corrigir seus erros ortográficos iniciais, elas passam a hipercorrigir suas produções escritas? Além disso, o trabalho busca evidências empíricas de como a gramática fonológica da criança atua na aquisição da escrita ao se esperar que as hipercorreções sejam regidas por restrições da fonologia da língua. A fim de abordarmos essas questões, analisamos dados de escrita inicial de um banco de dados organizado pelo Projeto Aspa da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, o E-labore (Laboratório Eletrônico de Oralidade e Escrita) (CRISTÓFARO-SILVA et al., 2009). Os resultados nos mostram que há, sim, hipercorreções relacionadas aos processos fonológicos da língua na aquisição do código escrito e que estas são majoritariamente regidas por restrições fonológicas do português brasileiro.

Phonological awareness is considered a key phenomenon having crucial position among abilities and processes which are important and responsible for the development of reading and writing (initial literacy). The paper deals with the significance and level of development of selected cognitive functions of a child in relation to the abilities of phonological awareness. The child’s current cognitive development is a predictor for certain level of phonological awareness. The paper is focused on a description of speech perception, language, oral vocabulary and phonological memory of children in preschool age. It is an output of the research project VEGA no. 1/0637/16 Development of a Diagnostic Tool to Assess the Level of Phonemic Awareness of Children in Preschool Age.

Purpose: to determine whether undernutrition in the first years of life affects the phonological awareness skills, the phonological working memory and the school performance of children. Methods: the participants were children with a history of moderate/severe undernutrition during their first years of life (G1) who achieved nutritional recovery (n = 15). The performance of G1 in different cognitive tasks (phonological awareness at the syllable and phoneme level, phonological working memory - repetition of digits and pseudowords, and reading, writing and arithmetic activities) was compared to that of children with school difficulties (G2) (n = 15) and without school difficulties (G3) (n = 15), all eutrophic ones. Results: the performance of G1 was worse than that of the other two groups in all tasks evaluated (mean score of G1, G2 and G3 and p-values: phonological awareness: 31, 41, 57 - 0.01; repetition of direct order digits: 18, 23, 28 - 0.001; writing: 4, 10, 22 - 0.001; reading: 26, 45, 65-0.001; arithmetic: 4, 7, 11- 0.001). Conclusion: the results demonstrate that undernutrition affected the cognitive development, causing changes in important cognitive skills for the development of written language. RESUMO Objetivo: analisar se a subnutrição sofrida por crianças nos primeiros anos de vida afetou suas habilidades de consciência fonológica, memória de trabalho fonológica e desempenho escolar. Métodos: participaram crianças com histórico de subnutrição moderada/grave nos primeiros anos de vida (G1) que foram recuperadas nutricionalmente (n = 15). O desempenho desse grupo (G1) em diversas tarefas cognitivas (consciência fonológica no nível da sílaba e do fonema, memória de trabalho fonológica - repetição de dígitos e de pseudopalavras, atividades de leitura, escrita e cálculo aritmético) foi comparado, ao desempenho de crianças com dificuldades escolares (G2) (n = 15) e sem dificuldades escolares (G3) (n = 15), todas eutróficas desde o nascimento. Resultados: observou-se pior desempenho (diferença estatística significante) de G1 em relação aos outros dois grupos em todas as tarefas avaliadas (pontuação média do G1, G2 e G3 e p-valores: Consciência fonológica: 31, 41, 57 - 0.01; Repetição de dígitos ordem direta: 18, 23, 28 - 0.001; Escrita: 4,10,22 - 0.001; Leitura: 26, 45, 65 - 0.001; Aritmética: 4, 7, 11 - 0.001). Conclusão: os resultados evidenciaram que a subnutrição em idade precoce afetou o desenvolvimento cognitivo (habilidades de consciência fonológica e memória de trabalho fonológica) e, por consequência prejudicou o desempenho acadêmico.

Objective: to provide preliminary normative data for the Reading and Writing Test by type of school, and normative data for the Phonological Awareness Test by Oral Production for private schools and update their normative data available for public schools, all of which are for children in the final year of early childhood education. Methods: 267 children, in the age range of 5 years, and typical development. Identification Questionnaire for Parents, Phonological Awareness Test by Oral Production and Reading and Writing Test were used. The means of performance in the tests of the present sample were compared with the existing normative data to justify normative data provision and updating. Results: Student’s t-test revealed that the private school children outperformed those of the public schools in all measures, reinforcing the need for specific standards, according to the type of school. There were strong to very strong relationships among the variables evaluated, demonstrating a marked association between phonological awareness and initial reading and writing abilities. The Wilcoxon test revealed significant differences between the performance of the children of the present study, from both private and public schools, and the data from the Phonological Awareness Test by Oral Production standardization sample, suggesting the need to update the Phonological Awareness Test by Oral Production standards. Finally, the new normative data were presented. Conclusion: the need to make available and update the test standards used, according to the type of school, was confirmed. Further studies are necessary to expand the data presented to other age groups. RESUMO Objetivo: disponibilizar dados normativos preliminares do Teste de Leitura e Escrita por tipo de escola, disponibilizar dados normativos da Prova de Consciência Fonológica por Produção Oral para escolas particulares e atualizar seus dados normativos disponíveis para escolas públicas, sendo todos para crianças do último período da Educação Infantil. Métodos: participaram 267 crianças, idade média de 5 anos, com desenvolvimento típico. Foram utilizados: Questionário de Identificação para pais, Prova de Consciência Fonológica por Produção Oral e Teste de Leitura e Escrita. Para justificar a disponibilização e atualização das normas, foram comparadas as médias de desempenho entre os testes da amostra atual e com dados normativos existentes. Resultados: teste t de Student revelou que as crianças da escola particular tiveram desempenho superior em relação às da escola pública em todas as medidas, reforçando a necessidade de normas específicas por tipo de escola. Houve relação alta a muito alta entre as varáveis avaliadas, demonstrando forte associação entre consciência fonológica e habilidades iniciais de leitura e escrita. Teste de Wilcoxon revelou diferenças significativas entre os desempenhos das crianças do presente estudo, tanto as de escola particular quanto da pública, com os da amostra de normatização da Prova de Consciência Fonológica por Produção Oral, sugerindo a necessidade de atualização das mesmas. Por fim, foram apresentados os novos dados normativos. Conclusão: foi confirmada a necessidade de disponibilização e atualização das normas dos testes utilizados em função do tipo de escola. Espera-se que pesquisas futuras possam expandir os dados apresentados para outras faixas etárias.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar e correlacionar os erros ortográficos presentes nas produções escritas ao desempenho em habilidades de consciência fonológica de crianças em diferentes anos escolares, com desenvolvimento fonológico típico e atípico. Método A amostra foi composta por 50 crianças divididas em dois grupos: com desenvolvimento fonológico típico (GDFT) e com desenvolvimento fonológico atípico (GDFA); estudantes dos anos iniciais (1ª a 5ª séries) de escolarização e idades entre 6:0 e 10:0 anos. As crianças foram submetidas às avaliações fonoaudiológicas e audiológica. Os dados foram tabulados e as análises estatísticas foram realizadas por meio do Coeficiente de Correlação de Spearman. Resultados Em relação ao número de erros ortográficos na escrita, estes foram semelhantes no GDFT e no GDFA, com exceção para os erros contextuais-arbitrários que foram em maior número para o GDFA. Ainda se observou que o número de erros ortográficos de escrita diminuiu com o aumento da escolarização. No que se refere ao desempenho médio em consciência fonológica, o GDFT teve um desempenho melhor que o GDFA em consciência silábica e fonêmica. As crianças de 4ª e 5ª séries apresentaram melhor desempenho em consciência fonológica que as de 1ª a 3ª séries. Conclusão A correlação foi inversamente proporcional entre o desempenho em consciência fonológica e o número de erros ortográficos (aqueles que alteram a estrutura silábica) para ambos os grupos, demonstrando que quanto mais erros deste tipo, menor o desempenho em consciência fonológica silábica, fonêmica e total.

La eficacia que muestran los programas dirigidos a desarrollar la conciencia fonológica en la prevención de dificultades en el aprendizaje lector hace que los científicos y profesionales implicados en la educación del alumnado con pérdidas auditivas traten de dilucidar si este tipo entrenamiento resulta igualmente eficaz para apoyar el desarrollo de la conciencia fonológica y prevenir las dificultades en el aprendizaje de la lectoescritura que se asocian habitualmente a la sordera. Sin embargo, la investigación realizada sobre estos programas preventivos es hasta el momento muy escasa. El objetivo de este estudio es analizar los efectos que tiene el “Programa para el desarrollo de la conciencia silábica” (García, 2014) sobre la conciencia silábica de dos alumnos de cinco años con déficit auditivo e implante coclear que asistían a un colegio bilingüe y bicultural y explorar el tipo de apoyos que requirieron para resolver los ítems que no pudieron resolver sin ayuda. El análisis de los resultados muestra una diferencia estadísticamente significativa entre las puntuaciones obtenidas antes y después de la intervención en el total de la Prueba de Segmentación Silábica (Ruíz, 2000), en las subpruebas de identificación, comparación y omisión de sílabas, y en la cantidad y tipo de apoyos que necesitaron para resolver los ítems. The effectiveness of the programs directed to support the development of phonological awareness in preventing reading learning difficulties lead scientists and professionals involved in the education of children with hearing impairment try to elucidate if this kind of training would also facilitate their development of phonological awareness and prevent the problems they usually meet when learning the written language. However, there is a scarcity of research addressing the efficacy of these prevention programs nowadays. The objective of this study is to analyze the effects of the “Program to develop the syllabic awareness” (García, 2014) on the syllabic awareness of two five-years-old children with hearing impairment and cochlear aid who assisted to a bilingual and bicultural school, and also to explore the kind of supports that they need to solve the items that they could not resolve without help. The differences between the pre-test and post-test total scores obtained in the Syllable Segmentation Test (Ruiz, 2000), in the subtests which require to identify, compare and omit syllables, and in the total amount and kind of supports required to resolve the items were statistically significant. The process by which people with severe and profound hearing loss acquired syllabic awareness and the influence of phonological features of languages in this development are discussed.

Objective: to verify and compare phonological acquisition and performance in phonological awareness tasks among children exposed to a bilingual (Brazilian Portuguese and German) or monolingual family environments (Brazilian Portuguese). Moyamoya disease is an unusual form of occlusive, cerebrovascular disorder that affects the arteries of the central nervous system, causing acquired language alterations and learning difficulties. The study aim was to describe the oral/written language and cognitive skills in a seven-year-and-seven-month-old girl diagnosed with Moyamoya disease. The assessment consisted of interviews with her parents and application of the following instruments: Observation of Communicative Behavior, Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, Academic Performance Test, Profile of Phonological Awareness, Raven’s Progressive Matrices Test, Special Scale, Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Bender Visual Motor Gestalt Test, and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. Two episodes of stroke in the left and right temporal-parietal and left frontal areas occurred until the age of six years and five months. Revascularization surgery and medication treatment were conducted. The audiologic and ophthalmologic assessments indicated normality. At the time of the study, the girl was attending the second grade of elementary school. She presented changes in oral and written language (syllabic-alphabetic), non-naming of all graphemes, low arithmetic and writing means, reading skill below first grade level and psycholinguistic delay, and pre-school level phonological processing skills. The psychological evaluation indicated satisfactory intellectual level; however, it also showed cognitive performance impairment in verbal and execution tasks and limitations on graphic-perceptual-motor skills and sequential logic organization. The stroke episodes influenced the performance of learning processes, affecting the analysis, integration, and interpretation of relevant visual and auditory information.

La lectura es un aprendizaje instrumental que debe ser enseñado con un método específico. En este sentido es importante conocer la interrelación entre los distintos subprocesos implicados. En este contexto el objetivo general de este estudio es analizar si existe una asociación o disociación entre las habilidades de lectura de palabras y los procesos de comprensión en alumnos de 2º ciclo de Educación Primaria y a partir de aquí analizar las implicaciones educativas de los resultados obtenidos. La muestra inicial la formaron 39 niños de 4º de Educación Primaria. Los pertinentes análisis de resultados mostraron como datos más importantes que: a) El nivel de comprensión lectora medido a través de la realización de inferencias (activación de la información textual) parece mostrarse independiente de otras variables (relacionadas con el léxico y el vocabulario); b) un bajo nivel léxico o de vocabulario (medido a través de pruebas estandarizadas) no implicará un bajo nivel de inferencias; c) la Memoria Operativa condiciona de modo significativo la eficacia en tareas de Conciencia Fonológica y de acceso léxico en general; d) existe una relación significativa positiva entre Conciencia Fonológica y acceso al léxico visual.

Nella ricerca, nei programmi di insegnamento e nei materiali didattici per l’italiano come lingua seconda o straniera viene generalmente data scarsa attenzione allo sviluppo della competenza fonologica e delle abilità del parlato. La presente ricerca, cui hanno partecipato 140 allievi delle scuole con lingua d’insegnamento slovena dell’Istria slovena, dove l’italiano è insegnato come lingua seconda, ha studiato l’impatto dell’insegnamento della fonologia e dello sviluppo della capacità di elaborazione fonologica dell’input linguistico sulla percezione uditiva dell’informazione fonologica. I risultati della ricerca indicano che i programmi di sviluppo dell’ascolto discriminativo e di segmentazione fonologica influiscono significativamente sulle capacità di percezione uditiva, a patto che avvengano nell’interazione diretta con il parlante della lingua obiettivo (seconda o straniera) e che siano sistematici, intensivi e estensivi. Di conseguenza, tali programmi influiscono anche sullo sviluppo della comprensione uditiva e della competenza comunicativa nella lingua obiettivo.

Resumo: OBJETIVOS: avaliar o desempenho de crianças e adolescentes com Síndrome de Williams em tarefas de consciência fonológica e analisar esse desempenho em função da idade, escolaridade e indicadores de habilidade intelectual. MÉTODOS: vinte e duas crianças e adolescentes (11 meninos e 11 meninas) com idades entre 7 e 18 anos realizaram os subtestes cubos e vocabulário das Escala Wechsler de Inteligência para estimativa de habilidades intelectuais e responderam a Prova de Consciência Fonológica por produção oral. RESULTADOS: os participantes obtiveram valores do quociente de inteligência estimado compatível com rebaixamento intelectual. Nas habilidades de consciência fonológica os resultados mostraram que os participantes com a síndrome obtiveram desempenho rebaixado em nove dos dez subtestes da prova de consciência fonológica em relação à pontuação padronizada em função da idade, assim como do nível escolar. Não foram encontradas correlações significantes entre consciência fonológica, indicadores de habilidade intelectual, idade e escolaridade. CONCLUSÃO: os resultados corroboram os encontrados em pesquisas internacionais sugerindo rebaixamento em consciência fonológica na Síndrome de Williams. Dada a relevância desses achados é necessário incluir programas de estimulação contínua, inclusive com intervenções precoces dirigidas a crianças com Síndrome de Williams em idade pré-escolar, adequação de métodos de ensino e de currículo adaptado. Abstract: PURPOSES: assess the performance of children and adolescents with Williams Syndrome in tasks of phonological awareness and analyze it in terms of age, education and indicators of intellectual skills. METHODS: twenty two children and adolescents (11 boys and 11 girls), aged 7 to 18 years old, took Block Design and Vocabulary subtests of Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children to estimate intellectual skills, and the Phonological Awareness Test by Oral Production. RESULTS: participants obtained estimate IQ values compatible with intellectual disability. Phonological awareness results indicated that participants with the syndrome had a lower performance in nine out of ten subtests of the Phonological Awareness Test compared to standard scores for children with same age and education level. No significant correlations were found among phonological awareness, intellectual skill indicators, age and level of education. CONCLUSIONS: results corroborate the findings of international researches that suggest difficulties in phonological awareness processes in Williams Syndrome. Considering the relevance of these findings, it is necessary to include continuous stimulation programs, including early intervention for preschoolers with Williams Syndrome, adaptation of teaching methods and curriculum.

The aim of this paper was to examine the extent of non-verbalizable knowledge L1 Brazilian Portuguese (BP) learners of English possess about the segmental inventory of the L2. The study had two aims: i) to determine to what extent L1 BP EFL learners are aware of contrastive and non-contrastive L2 segments, ii) to determine which type of segments present the lowest level of awareness. To the date, little research has been carried out about the non-verbalizable aspect of L2 phonological awareness, most studies having relied on participants’ verbalization of the acquired knowledge (e.g., KENNEDY & TROFIMOVICH, 2010; WREMBEL, 2011). Whereas language learners are frequently taught grammar explicitly, pronunciation of the L2 is rarely addressed in the foreign language classroom. Moreover, phonology is in nature less susceptible to conscious processing than other aspects of L2 learning, making the noticing, and especially the explicit explanation, of phonological aspects difficult. Nevertheless, high L2 phonological awareness is beneficial for L2 pronunciation (KIVISTÖ-DE SOUZA, 2015), making its examination a priority in the foreign language classroom context. The participants of the study were 71 advanced EFL learners and 18 native speakers of American English. Participants performed a perception test which presented English segments spoken by native and non-native speakers. The ability to identify pronunciation deviations in the non-native speaker trials was taken as a measure for phonological awareness. This study examined to what extent L1 Brazilian Portuguese (BP) EFL learners are aware of L2 phonotactics and whether there would be a relationship between L2 phonotactic awareness and L2 pronunciation accuracy. The language learners were tested regarding their awareness of L2 onset consonant clusters with a lexical decision task presenting nonword stimuli with legal and illegal onset clusters. L2 pronunciation was measured with a Foreign Accent Rating Task. The weak phonological awareness and slow reaction time in word identification is a disorder that dyslexic people have in reading (Wolf and Bowers, 1999). Therefore, this study will investigate the ability of phonological awareness (phonological awareness), rapid naming (Rapid Naming) and reading ability of people with dyslexia. The subjects consisted of 4 children aged 7-8 years of dyslexia in Pantara Inclusive Elementary School, Jakarta. The four dyslexic children were compared to the control group (20 children from Kwitang 8 PSKD Pancoran Mas, Depok, who had the same age and gender as dyslexic children). The research used quantitative method with case study control design. The study was conducted with three experiments, namely: reading test, counting the number of silabel, and fast-track test. The first experiment consisted of 100 words (simple words, digraphs, diphthongs, and consonant clusters). The second experiment consisted of 48 words (24 words with illustrations and 24 words with trisilabik). All words are from the 10,000 words that have the highest frequency in the Indonesian linguistic corpus (Indonesianwac). The third test is 50 RAN letters (Pennington et al., 2001). Results showed that persons with dyslexia had a lower ability than the control group on all three tests. Dyslexic children tend to perform sound recovery, eliminate phonemes and swap words with nonwords and slow reaction times. Based on the results obtained, 2 dyslexic children data support double deficit hypothesis Wolf and Bowers (1999) because dyslexic children show phonological deficits and rapid naming deficits.

Resumo: OBJETIVO: analisar a estimativa da habilidade em consciência fonológica de adultos não alfabetizados. MÉTODOS: participaram da pesquisa 44 adultos, de ambos os sexos, com a idade superior a 28 anos. Os adultos foram divididos em dois grupos, a saber: (1) não alfabetizados, (2) alfabetizados na infância. Utilizou-se os seguintes instrumentos: Ficha sobre dados sociodemográficos; Teste de Habilidades Preditoras da Leitura (THPL), composto por tarefas de rima, aliteração e segmentação, administrados de forma individual e em um tablet. RESULTADOS: ocorreu diferença significante na estimativa de habilidade em consciência fonológica entre os dois grupos. Destaca-se que a habilidade na tarefa de rimar foi significantemente superior no grupo de adultos alfabetizados. Observou-se que a tarefa de segmentar palavras foi considerada a mais difícil. Os resultados sugerem um padrão de habilidade, a saber: Aliteração > rima > segmentação. Um dado interessante refere-se ao tempo de execução da tarefa; foi verificado que houve diferença estatisticamente significante no que se refere ao tempo de execução das tarefas de aliteração, segmentação e rima entre os dois grupos analisados. CONCLUSÃO: ao verificar a correlação entre tempo de execução e habilidade na tarefa, foi possível perceber que a correlação não ocorreu nos dois grupos da mesma forma: no grupo de alfabetizados houve correlação positiva e no grupo de não alfabetizados correlação negativa. Abstract: PURPOSE: to analyze the estimation of ability in phonological awareness of illiterate adults. METHODS: forty four adults, over the age of twenty eight and of both sexes, participated in the survey. The adults were divided into two groups, namely: (1) illiterate and (2) literate in childhood. The following instruments were used: Data on demographic data; Predictors of Reading Skills Test (THPL) test consists of tasks of rhyme, alliteration, and segmentation, administered individually and on a tablet. RESULTS: it occurs a significant difference in estimating ability in phonological awareness between the two groups. It is noteworthy that the ability to rhyme in the task was significantly higher in adult literacy. It was observed that the task of segmenting words has been considered more difficult. The results suggest a standard of skill, namely Alliteration> rhyme> targeting. An interesting finding relates to the execution time of the task, it was found that there was a statistically significant difference with regard to the execution time of the tasks of alliteration, rhyme and segmentation between the two groups. CONCLUSION: when verified the correlation between runtime and skill in the task, it was revealed that the correlation did not occur in both groups the same way: the group of positive correlation literate and illiterate group of negative correlation.

The longitudinal intervention study reported here is the first to investigate the efficiency of computer learning software specifically designed for dyslexic Swiss German learners of Standard German as a second language (L2) and English as a third language (L3). A total of 40 subjects (20 of them dyslexics and 20 of them nondyslexics; 10 students from each group participated in in- terventions and the other 10 from each group served as control groups) were assessed with a battery of verbal and written pre- and posttests involving pho- nological/orthographic and semantic measures of their L2 and L3 before and after three months of daily intervention with the software. The results show that computer-based training in the L3 is potentially an important tool of intervention for dyslexic students as it has a positive effect on the components of L3 as well as L2 learning. As a consequence of their progress in acquiring the relationships between L3 graphemes and phonemes, the experimental groups, but not the control groups, made significant gains on L2 naming accuracy and speed, L2 and L3 word reading, L2 and L3 phonological awareness, and L2 and L3 receptive and productive vocabulary and comprehension tasks. 5 1 109 133 6 Studies in Second Language Learning and Teaching

The aim of this study was to examine the phonological errors made by dyslexics and non-dyslexic children in Persian orthography which is transcribed with two distinct spelling: words spelled with long vowels (transparent) and words spelled with short vowels (diacritics) are called opaque words. The sample of the study consisted of Fifteen dyslexic students with the mean age of 9.6, (SD= 1.5) and fifteen unimpaired elementary students with the mean age of 9.6 (SD= 1.4) who were Persian residents of 6th district of Tehran. All the participants were controlled for IQ, social class and behavioral disorders. The instrument used in this research was a set of phonological awareness task (rhymed word detection, rhymed word production, first sound detection, final sound detection, blending syllables and syllable deletion). Participants were required to do each of these phonological awareness tasks in order to compare their error rates in transparent and opaque words. The performance of the two groups was examined according to the effect of transparency variable. Data analysis was done using SPSS software. The aim of this paper was to examine whether Brazilian Portuguese learners of English are aware of English nuclear stress assignment and whether this awareness is affected by the utterance type. To the date, little research has been carried out about the acquisition of English suprasegmentals by Brazilian Portuguese speakers. Previous studies indicate that the acquisition of target-like nuclear stress assignment is difficult for EFL learners (ZUBIZARRETA; NAVA, 2011). However, non-target-like nuclear stress assignment is likely to lead into communication breakdowns, making its mastering a priority for L2 learners. The participants were 69 L1 Brazilian Portuguese learners of English and 16 native English speakers. Sensitivity to L2 prosody was measured in a perception task which presented low-pass filtered utterances differing in nuclear stress assignment.
