The denudation of rocks in mountain belts exposes a range of fresh minerals to the surface of the Earth that are chemically weathered by acidic and oxygenated fluids. The impact of the resulting coupling between denudation and weathering rates fundamentally depends on the types of minerals that are weathering. Whereas silicate weathering sequesters CO2 , the combination of sulfide oxidation and carbonate dissolution emits CO2 to the atmosphere. Here, we combine the concentrations of dissolved major elements in stream waters with 10Be basin-wide denudation rates from 35 small catchments in eastern Tibet to elucidate the importance of lithology in modulating the relationships between denudation rate, chemical weathering pathways, and CO2 consumption or release. Our catchments span 3 orders of magnitude in denudation rate in low-grade flysch, high-grade metapelites, and granitoid rocks. For each stream, we estimate the concentrations of solutes sourced from silicate weathering, carbonate dissolution, and sulfide oxidation using a mixing model. We find that for all lithologies, cation concentrations from silicate weathering are largely independent of denudation rate, but solute concentrations from carbonates and, where present, sulfides increase with increasing denudation rate. With increasing denudation rates, weathering may therefore shift from consuming to releasing CO2 in both (meta)sedimentary and granitoid lithologies. For a given denudation rate, we report dissolved solid concentrations and inferred weathering fluxes in catchments underlain by (meta)sedimentary rock that are 2–10 times higher compared to catchments containing granitoid lithologies, even though climatic and topographic parameters do not vary systematically between these catchments. Thus, varying proportions of exposed (meta)sedimentary and igneous rocks during orogenesis could lead to changes in the sequestration and release of CO2 that are independent of denudation rate. The tectonically active Taiwan orogen features numerous rivers that yield a high amount of sediment with fluxes exceeding 104 t/km2/yr. Amongst these, the landslide‐dominated Liwu River is well studied regarding its dynamic surface processes. However, the quantification of denudation in the Liwu Basin is still an ongoing task as rates obtained to date are subject to substantial differences depending on methods that differ in their spatio‐temporal scales. We constrain an upper limit of global denudation using the cosmogenic nuclide 10Be(meteoric) and its ratio to stable 9Be. Meteoric cosmogenic 10Be is delivered to Earth's surface by precipitation, whereas stable 9Be is released from rock weathering. In contrast to in situ cosmogenic 10Be measured in quartz, the 10Be(meteoric)/9Be ratio can be analyzed in quartz‐poor settings. 10Be(meteoric)/9Be‐derived denudation rates (Dmet) vary from 8.1 to >30 mm/yr in the Liwu mainstem, and from 3.4 to 21.5 mm/yr in the tributaries. These new Dmet are among the highest cosmogenic nuclide‐derived rates ever measured. Most of these rates agree with rates from sediment gauging or channel incision. We propose that stochastic landsliding plays a major role in denudation processes here. Using a soil‐bedrock mixing model and published riverine organic 14C data as a soil tracer, we estimate the fractional contribution of bedrock landslide material to mainstem sediments to be 55%–97%, which explains the magnitude and large variability (4‐fold) in Dmet. We demonstrate the complexity associated with denudation rates determination in landslide‐dominated routing systems; but also the potential of 10Be(meteoric)/9Be for tracing stochastic landsliding processes. Plain Language Summary: Many of Earth's rivers that transfer sediments with an extremely high rate are found in the Taiwan mountain belt, where earthquakes and typhoons are very common. Determination of the sediment removal rate in these rivers is crucial for understanding of the evolution of mountain landscapes through time and their impact on ocean chemistry and atmospheric trace gases. We applied a denudation rate meter to river sediments from one of the fastest‐eroding catchments in Taiwan, the Liwu River: the meteoric cosmogenic isotope beryllium‐10 (10Be) delivered by rainfall normalized to stable 9Be. This geochemical tool is particularly suited for fast‐eroding settings given the high delivery rate of meteoric 10Be to Earth's surface. The measured 10Be(meteoric)/9Be‐derived denudation rates in the Liwu Basin are highly variable and range from ∼3 to >30 mm/yr. We find that stochastic bedrock landsliding is likely the cause for such magnitude and large variability in denudation. Liwu river sediments constitute a mixture between steadily eroding surface soil and bedrock materials released from depths that lack meteoric 10Be. Our findings demonstrate the substantial potential of 10Be(meteoric)/9Be to trace sources of rainfall‐triggered landslides. Major strike-slip fault systems on Earth, like the North Anatolian Fault (NAF), play an important role in accommodating plate motion, but surprisingly little is known about how such structures evolve through space and time. Along the central sector of the NAF in the Central Pontides, transpression and crustal thickening along the northward restraining bend of the fault are thought to have generated rock-uplift rates of 0.2–0.3 km/Myr since at least 400 ka based on Quaternary marine and river terraces, while data from low-temperature thermochronology suggest that an enhanced exhumation phase occurred within the last 11 Myr. However, the precise onset of this faster uplift phase, which likely reflects deformation associated with the development of the central sector of the NAF, is poorly constrained. Here we define the spatiotemporal pattern of rock-uplift rates within the Central Pontides over the last ∼10 Myr by performing linear inversions of 19 river profiles that drain the northern margin of the Central Pontides, from the Sinop Range to the Black Sea. We use 21 new 10Be-derived basin-average denudation rates to calibrate an erodibility parameter, which we use to convert our χ -transformed river profiles into rock-uplift histories. Our results document an increase in rock-uplift rates after 10 Ma, with peak rates of ∼0.15–0.25 km/Myr occurring between 4 and 2 Ma. Moreover, the spatiotemporal pattern of uplift suggests that faster rock uplift started in the eastern part of the Sinop Range and migrated westward over a period of ca. 2 to 2.5 Myr, which we relate to the westward propagation of the NAF through this sector at a rate of 74 ± 13 km/Myr. In the context of previously published constraints on the westward propagation of the NAF starting in eastern Turkey at ∼12 Ma, our results suggest differences in fault-propagation rates that coincide with differences in the orientation of the NAF relative to plate-convergence velocity vectors. Detrital thermochronology is often employed to assess the evolutionary stage of an entire orogenic belt using the lag-time approach, i.e., the difference between the cooling and depositional ages of detrital mineral grains preserved in a stratigraphic succession. The impact of different eroding sources to the final sediment sink is controlled by several factors, including the short-term erosion rate and the mineral fertility of eroded bedrock. Here, we use apatite fertility data and cosmogenic-derived erosion rates in the Po river catchment (Alps–Apennines) to calculate the expected percentage of apatite grains supplied to the modern Po delta from the major Alpine and Apenninic eroding sources. We test these predictions by using a cutting-edge dataset of trace-element and Nd-isotope signatures on 871 apatite grains from 14 modern sand samples, and we use apatite fission-track data to validate our geochemical approach to provenance discrimination. We found that apatite grains shed from different sources are geochemically distinct. Apatites from the Lepontine dome in the Central Alps show relative HREE enrichment, lower concentrations in Ce and U, and higher 147 Sm/ 144 Nd ratios compared to apatites derived from the External Massifs. Derived provenance budgets point to a dominant apatite contribution to the Po delta from the high-fertility Lepontine dome, consistent with the range independently predicted from cosmonuclide and mineral-fertility data. Our results demonstrate that the single-mineral record in the final sediment sink can be largely determined by high-fertility source rocks exposed in rapidly eroding areas within the drainage. This implies that the detrital thermochronology record may reflect processes affecting relatively small parts of the orogenic system under consideration. A reliable approach to lag-time analysis would thus benefit from an independent provenance discrimination of dated mineral grains, which may allow to proficiently reconsider many previous interpretations of detrital thermochronology datasets in terms of orogenic-wide steady state.
