Objective: To illuminate child healthcare nurses' experiences of communication with 4‐year‐old children during their visit to the child healthcare center. Design: A qualitative method, using data collected from individual interviews. Sample: Fifteen semistructured interviews with nurses working in a child healthcare center. Measurements: The results were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in three themes and eight subthemes: Adapting to the child in the conversation, based on the subthemes Preparing for the visit, Listening in and observing, and Creating a welcoming environment; Combining strategies for the conversation, based on the subthemes Engaging the child, Using visual tools, and Parental involvement; and Challenges due to language barriers, based on the subthemes Using an interpreter and Parent acts as interpreter. Conclusion: Child healthcare nurses focus on the child when communicating and strive to create joy and a welcoming environment. The communication strategies employed during the visit include engaging the child directly, involving parents in the conversation, and balancing the parental involvement. Communication challenges related to language barriers are addressed, particularly during interpreter‐assisted conversations. Background: Using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in paediatric and neonatal intensive care units (PICU/NICU) creates ethical challenges and carries a high risk for moral distress, burn out and team conflicts. Aim: The study aimed to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the underlying factors affecting moral distress when using ECMO for infants and children by examining the attitudes of ECMO nurses. Methods: Four focus groups discussions were conducted with 21 critical care nurses working in a Swiss University Children's Hospital. Purposive sampling was adopted to identify research participants. The data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Results: Unlike "miracle machine" stories in online media reports, specialized nurses working in PICU/NICU expressed both their hopes and fears towards this technology. Their accounts also contained references to events and factors that triggered experiences of moral distress: the unspeakable nature of the death of a child or infant; the seemingly lack of honest and transparent communication with parents; the apparent loss of situational awareness among doctors; the perceived lack of recognition for the role of nurses and the variability in end-of-life decision-making; the length of time it takes doctors to take important treatment decisions; and the resource intensity of an ECMO treatment. Conclusion: The creation of a multidisciplinary moral community with transparent information among all involved health care professionals and the definition of clear treatment goals as well as the implementation of paediatric palliative care for all paediatric ECMO patients should become a priority if we want to alleviate situations of moral distress. Relevance for Clinical Practice: The creation of a multidisciplinary moral community, clear treatment goals and the implementation of palliative care for all paediatric ECMO patients are crucial to alleviate situations of moral distress for nurses, and thus to improve provider well-being and the quality of patient care in PICU/NICU. Background: Low uptake of social determinants of health (SDH) screening and referral interventions within neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) is partly due to limited understanding of the best procedures to integrate this practice into routine clinical workflows. Purpose: To examine the feasibility and acceptability of an SDH screening and referral intervention in the NICU from the perspective of neonatal nurses; and to identify factors affecting implementation outcomes. Methods: We conducted 25 semistructured interviews with NICU nurses. We used the Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (PARiHS) framework to guide interview questions and codebook development for directed content analysis. Themes were mapped onto the 3 PARiHS domains of context, evidence, and facilitation. Findings: Analysis yielded 8 themes. Context: Nurses felt that stressors experienced by NICU families are magnified in a safety net environment. Nurses shared varying viewpoints of the roles and responsibilities for social care in the NICU, and feared that scarcity of community resources would make it difficult to address families' needs. Evidence: The intervention was perceived to increase identification of adverse SDH and provision of resources; and to potentially jump-start better caregiver and infant health trajectories. Facilitation: Procedures that improved acceptability included dynamic training and champion support, regular feedback on intervention outcomes, and strategies to reduce stigma and bias. Background: Despite the challenge of nursing shortage in the world and its subsequent impact on care quality as well as aggravation of the situation by intention to leave service, this issue has not been properly addressed, especially among neonatal and pediatric nurses. The present study aims to identify the relationship between mental workload and musculoskeletal disorders with intention to leave the service among nurses working at neonatal and pediatric departments. Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was conducted on 145 nurses working at neonatal and pediatric departments in six hospitals in Bushehr Province using full-census method. The data were collected using national aeronautics and space administration-task load index (NASA-TLX), Cornell musculoskeletal discomfort questionnaire(CMDQ) and Mobley and Horner's voluntary turnover questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Kruskal-Wallis test, Pearson's and Spearman correlation tests and hierarchical linear regression in simultaneous model in SPSS 19.0. Results: The mean score of intention to leave the service was 9.57 ± 3.20 (higher than the moderate level) and the mean mental workload was 71.65 ± 15.14 (high level). Pain in at least one of the legs (100%), back (77.3%) and knees (76.6%) was highly prevalent. However, no statistically significant correlation was found between musculoskeletal disorder categories and intention to leave the service (p > 0.05). The regression analysis results revealed among mental workload domains, only effort-induced workload was negatively and significantly correlated with intention to leave the service (p = 0.003; β=-0.078). However, the number of night shifts per month was positively and significantly correlated with intention to leave the service (p = 0.001; β = 0.176). Conclusions: Planning for appropriate allocation of night shifts, investigating the etiology of musculoskeletal disorders and providing solutions for reducing mental workload should be prioritized by policymakers, while maintaining pediatric nurses' motivation for making efforts. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the experience and perceived value of travel nurses in a children's hospital. BACKGROUND: Children's hospitals face unique challenges related to highly specialized care requirements and workforce expansion limitations. Travel nurses can augment nurse staffing capacity during times of intense demand and may offer insights as organizations seek to strengthen work environments. METHODS: Pediatric travel nurses currently contracted at the hospital were invited to participate in a focus group or interview. Content analysis was used to summarize information and identify themes. RESULTS: From the 56 participants, 5 themes emerged. The themes were financial, flexibility, searching for healthy work environments, nursing care, and solutions. The COVID-19 pandemic deeply affected the lives of children and young people; studies report adverse effects on mental, physical, and social well-being. However, the impact of the pandemic on obesity care for children received little attention. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the challenges youth healthcare nurses experienced and to describe implications for future obesity care and policy. We conducted interviews, participant observations, and a group session with youth healthcare nurses during the pandemic in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Youth healthcare nurses reported a deterioration in the problems of children and young people who were already in the highest classification for pediatric obesity, such as increased weight gain, mental health problems, and socio-economic problems. The nurses experienced immense challenges while trying to provide obesity care, such as a decrease in face-to-face contact with youth and their families, as well as loss of continuity of care. It is important to reconnect with these families, invest in a trusted relationship with youth receiving obesity care, and prioritize available and accessible obesity care for those who need it the most. Background: The World Health Organization declared that medication errors are the third largest global patient safety challenge. The medication administration stage is a common and susceptible stage for medical errors to occur. Objective: To explore the factors contributing to medication administration errors specifically in pediatric care units as perceived by nurses in a Jordanian hospital. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted involving face-to-face audio-recorded interviews with 9 nurses in a tertiary hospital located in the north of Jordan. A convenience sampling technique was used to select the participants of our study. Data were collected between October 2022 and November 2022. The data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results: Four themes emerged affecting medication administration errors in pediatric care units. These were environmental, staff, parents and patient, and medication-related factors. Conclusion: The findings of this study raise awareness of the most frequent sources of medication errors in a Jordanian hospital. Background: Family-centered care is founded upon collaboration between parents and healthcare professionals, caring for a child and parents as one entity. The unfamiliar neonatal environment and complexity of care can make family-centered care challenging. Purpose: To explore neonatal nurses' perceptions of family-centered care and parents' cultural needs. Methods: This was a qualitative descriptive study using interviews to gather data from registered nurses, and analyzed using inductive content analysis. Results: Ten neonatal nurses participated in online interviews, lasting an average of 25 minutes. Parents' cultural needs were poorly understood and assumed synonymous with family-centered care. While all acknowledged the importance of family-centered care, most described tasks to parent-infant bonding, rather than a broader embodiment of family-centered care. In time of uncertainty, emergent clinical priorities took priority over a family-centered approach to care. Cultural care was poorly understood, and care tasks associated with supporting parent-infant bonding suggest further work is necessary to promote embodiment of family-centered care beyond individual tasks. While emergent clinical priorities and neonate well-being will always be the priority, finding a way to respond that concords with the ethos of family-centered care is also essential. Implications for Practice and Research: Clear and consistent leadership is needed to demonstrate greater embodiment of family-centered care, which includes cultural care for parents. Strong leadership and targeted education are key to supporting this change. Further research is warranted to examine and observe practice, in particular how parents' cultural needs are assessed and integrated into family-centered care in neonatal settings. Purpose: This study aimed to assess the status of patient safety culture among pediatric nurses in a Saudi Arabian hospital. Methods: The study employed a descriptive cross-sectional design with non-random assignment and included a convenience sample of 138 nurses who provided direct patient care across different general and specialty pediatric clinical settings. Data were collected using an anonymous, self-structured questionnaire that adopted a Survey on Patient Safety Culture™ (SOPS™). Results: The overall percentage of positive responses for the 12 patient safety culture dimensions and across 42 items was 59.2%. Furthermore, 61% of nurses reported no safety events, and 33.3% reported one to two events over the past 12 months. Conclusions: The overall percentage of positive response scores was lower than the international scores and higher than the regional benchmark scores. Clinical Relevance: Present findings should be considered by pediatric hospital management to make efforts tailored to improve the dimensions of patient safety culture in "hospital handoffs and transitions," "communication openness," and "supervisor/manager expectations and actions promoting safety." In addition, the Saudi Patient Safety Center and nursing management can use these data with a detailed understanding of the current patient safety culture in pediatric units to strengthen safe practices within health care hospitals in Saudi Arabia. Purpose: This study explores how nursing professionalism impacts the quality of pediatric nursing care. Specifically, we examine the mediating effects of clinical decision making and pediatric nurse-parent partnership among pediatric nurses. Methods: The study involved 133 nurses working in pediatric wards within regions S, C, and D. Data were collected during August 2022 and analyzed using SPSS/WINdows software version 26.0 and PROCESS macro for SPSS version 4.2. Results: The double mediating effect of clinical decision making and the pediatric nurse-parent on the relationship between nursing professionalism and the quality of pediatric nursing care was statistically significant. Conclusion: Improving nursing professionalism, enhancing clinical decision making, and strengthening the pediatric nurse-parent partnership are valuable strategies for enhancing the quality of pediatric nursing care among such nurses. Effective communication in end‐of‐life care for pediatric cancer patients is crucial. Yet, limited research focuses on the communication experiences of pediatric oncology nurses during this period. This study aims to investigate the communication experiences and needs of these nurses with children and their families during the end‐of‐life period. A qualitative study design with photo voice methodology was followed. The research was conducted with 16 pediatric oncology nurses working in the pediatric oncology wards of a university hospital between January and May 2023. Data were collected the "Characteristic Information Form", "Semi‐Structured Interview Form", and photovoice methodology. Data were analyzed through reflexive thematic analysis. Most of the nurses are at the undergraduate level, and their working experience in pediatric oncology wards ranges from 4 months to 17 years. Seven main themes emerged: Optimistic Communication‐Interaction, Mindfulness, Active Coping, Behavioral Actions, Death Uncertainty Dilemma, Interpersonal and Environmental Factors, and Discrepancy between Ideals and Reality. The study sheds light on the importance of pediatric oncology nurses' ideals versus realities upstream approach in communicating with end‐of‐life children and their families, empowering pediatric oncology nurses on the journey to ideal end‐of‐life care. Therefore, it is important to listen to the voices of children and children's nurses in relation to this area. This article is informed by a narrative literature review and study, undertaken by the author as part of her doctoral thesis, which explored children's experiences of staying overnight in hospital from the perspective of children and children's nurses. In this article, the author summarises the main findings from the study and considers the implications for children's nursing practice based on her reflection on these findings. This study investigated the experience of partnership development according to the degree of partnership between pediatric nurses and the parents of high-risk infants to identify the process of developing partnership using a two-step design with methodological triangulation that combined quantitative and qualitative research methods. In the first stage, 54 pairs of parents of high-risk infants in a NICU and their babies' primary nurses participated in the quantitative component of the study through a partnership survey. Based on the partnership scores obtained via the survey, we divided the participants into two groups: (1) a 4.0-point-and-higher group and (2) a group of over 3.0, but under 4.0 points, and thereafter included them in the qualitative component of the study—a semi-structured interview. We found that the core category influencing the pediatric nurses' partnership was "being a guide in working together," whereas for the parents, it was "getting along with the nurse based on faith." The process of partnership development between pediatric nurses and parents differed based on high and low partnership scores. Our study is meaningful in that it validated and added to the developing literature on the partnership between parents and nurses in NICU situations while considering the South Korean culture, and comprehensively explaining such partnership development from the parent's and nurse's individual perspectives. Considering the partnership development process between pediatric nurses and the parents of high-risk infants in the NICU based on their values and needs to promote partnership, a nursing intervention strategy to provide proper nursing management needs to be developed. Highlights: We investigated the degree and development process of partnership between nurses and parents of high-risk infants. The partnership development process differed according to the partnership score levels. Aim: To investigate the experience of Child Health Care Nurses (CHCNs) using language screening for 2.5‐year‐old children. Design: An exploratory qualitative design with an inductive approach. Method: Data were collected through semi‐structured, interviews with Swedish CHCNs who regularly performed language screening for children. The interviews were analysed by thematic analysis. Results: Four themes were identified: 'The difficult visit', 'Explanations for language delay', 'Language screening across cultures' and 'Language screening with children exposed to adverse life events'. Patient or Public Contribution: Our findings suggest that in routine care a modified procedure is used for the language screening of children aged 2.5 to secure the child's cooperation and to preserve an alliance with the parents. Consequently, the validity of the screening is called into question, particularly when it comes to children from families with origins outside the dominant culture and children exposed to adverse life events. Aim: To explore the experiences of neonatal and NICU nurses on participating in evidence‐based changes in their neonatal pain management practice. Design: It is a qualitative conventional content analysis. Methods: A purposive sample with nurses working in neonatal and NICUs was used. The data were collected through 11 semi‐structured in‐depth individual interviews, five focused group discussions, and observations and analyzed using the conventional content analysis method based on the Elo and Kyngäs model. The COREQ checklist was used for writing the report. Results: Analysis of gathered data led to the emergence of four themes, including 'being in a supportive and encouraging atmosphere', 'a journey from resistance to adherence', 'achieving multi‐dimensional improvements', and 'facing obstructive challenges'. Background and Purpose: Family-centered care (FCC) is a philosophy of care that applies to all areas of pediatric nursing and is a key component of the care model for patient safety and management activities in the medical environment of hospitalized children. The aim of this study was to translate and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Korean version of the Family-Centered Care Questionnaire — Revised (FCCQ-R). Methods: A total of 239 questionnaires were completed by pediatric nurses at four consenting general hospitals. Results: Fourteen items were removed from the original questionnaire through exploratory factor analysis and nine subscales were reduced to five. The factor loadings of the 30 items on the five subscales ranged from 0.50–0.80. The model of the Korean version of the questionnaire was validated by an exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Reliability analysis for internal consistency showed an acceptable to high Cronbach's α of 0.96 in total and the subscales ranged from 0.59–0.92. Conclusions: This study verified the validity and reliability of the tool to measure the perception of FCC. Future research will need to correlate FCC with more relevant measures, such as the nurse–parent partnership measure tool, to confirm predictive and concurrent validity. The Korean version of the FCCQ-R of 30 questions on five subscales is a valid and reliable measurement of Korean nurses' perceptions of FCC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background & Aims The ethical challenges of pediatric nurses in the work environment is inevitable. One of these challenges for nurses is related to euthanasia, which is affected by extensive legal, religious, and cultural issues. This study aims to determine the relationship between ethical reasoning and attitudes towards euthanasia in nurses working in children’s hospitals. Materials & Methods This descriptive-analytical study was conducted on 194 pediatric nurses working in two children’s hospitals affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Data were collected electronically and in person using three questionnaires, including a demographic form, the nursing dilemma test (NDT), and the euthanasia attitude survey (EAS). The collected data were analyzed in SPSS software, version 26. Results The mean score of ethical reasoning was 42.92±10.33, and the mean score of EAS was 2.65±0.12. The ethical reasoning score had no significant correlation with age, work experience, sex, marital status, education level, and history of participation in nursing ethics courses, except for the department, which was significantly related to ethical reasoning. The EAS score had no significant correlation with any of the demographic variables, except for the department. The Pearson correlation test results indicated a significant negative correlation between ethical reasoning and attitudes toward euthanasia (r=-0.60, P<0.001). Conclusion The ethical reasoning of pediatric nurses in the study hospitals is at a moderate level, and they have a negative attitude toward euthanasia. The nurses with higher ethical reasoning have a more negative attitude toward euthanasia. Nurses from special care units and emergency departments have lower ethical reasoning but a more positive attitude toward euthanasia. Participation in nursing ethics workshops has no significant relationship with ethical reasoning scores and attitudes toward euthanasia. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that comprehensive educational programs should be held to strengthen the ethical reasoning of pediatric nurses and enhance their perception of euthanasia. Purpose: This cross‐sectional, descriptive, correlational study aimed to measure burnout, quality of life (QOL) and perceptions of patient‐related adverse events among paediatric nurses amid the COVID‐19 pandemic and assess the relationships between these scores and participants' demographic and work‐related characteristics. Background: The mental health of most nurses may severely suffer due to the significant adversities that they struggle with while they care for their patients amid the COVID‐19 pandemic. Mental distress negatively affects nurses' relationships and work performance, which may adversely influence the quality of care and patient safety. Methods: A convenient sample of 225 Jordanian paediatric nurses completed a test batter comprising the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory, the Brief Version of the World Health Organisation's Quality of Life questionnaire and the nurse‐perceived patient adverse events' questionnaire. This study was prepared and is reported according to the STROBE checklist. Results: Paediatric nurses reported high levels of burnout, low QOL and high occurrence of hospital‐acquired infections. Participants' age and hospital/unit capacity were significantly associated with burnout and QOL. Conclusion: Personal traits, perceived salary insufficiency and hospital/unit capacity represent factors that aggravate burnout, lower quality of life and worsen perceived patient safety among paediatric nurses. Relevance to clinical practice: Policymakers should promote nurses' mental integrity and patient safety by addressing issues of workload and financial sufficiency and by provide interventions aimed to increase nurses' resilience. Background: Systematic training for the neonatal staff to support parents' active involvement is lacking. There is little information about the effectiveness of educational interventions. Purpose: To evaluate the effects of an educational intervention to neonatal staff on the quality of family-centered care from the perspectives of parents and nurses. Methods: A quasi-experimental before and after study was carried out in 5 Finnish neonatal units in 2014-2018. Data were collected using the DigiFCC-tools with a 7-point Likert scale. Thirty-one fathers and 53 mothers were recruited before the intervention and 21 fathers and 61 mothers after the intervention. They answered 1 question every evening until their infants' discharge. Each nurse answered 1 corresponding question after every shift, during the same period before and after the intervention. Before the intervention 3239 responses and after the intervention 3092 responses were received from nurses. Results: The fathers' total score and the score indicating "Shared decision making" were higher after the intervention than before the intervention. The mothers' total score did not differ between the 2 time periods. The nurses' total score was higher after the intervention than before the intervention. Of the individual items, higher scores were found for "Active listening," "Parents' trust in the nurse," and "Emotional support." Implications for Practice: Developing the staff's negotiating and active listening skills facilitates better support for parents during infants' intensive care. Implications for Research: Family-centered care interventions such as Close Collaboration with Parents should be studied in randomized controlled trials, also including child outcomes. Background: This study aims to explore the feelings and experiences of nursing staff when faced with the death of a pediatric patient in the ICU. Methodology: A qualitative study based on hermeneutic phenomenology was conducted through semi-structured interviews. Ten nurses (30% of staff) from the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of a referral hospital were interviewed in April 2022. Text transcripts were analysed using latent content analysis. Results: Content analysis indicated that the interviewees had feelings of sadness and grief; they had a misconception of empathy. They had no structured coping strategies, and those they practiced were learned through personal experience, not by specific training; they reported coping strategies such as peer support, physical exercise, or strengthening ties with close family members, especially their children. The lack of skills to cope with the death and the absence of support from personnel management departments were acknowledged. This can lead to the presence of compassion fatigue. Conclusions: The feelings that PICU nurses have when a child they care for die are negative feelings and sadness, and they possess coping strategies focused on emotions learned from their own experience and without institutional training support. Aim: To describe child health care nurses' experiences of teaching infant massage in parent groups. Design: This was an exploratory‐descriptive qualitative study based on individual interviews. Method: Qualitative semi‐structured interviews were conducted with child health care nurses (N = 9) according to the COREQ guidelines and analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Results: Five categories were identified: (1) Infant massage can promote attachment between parents/guardians and their children; (2) Infant massage can have a calming impact; (3) Stress and lack of time can be challenging; (4) The composition of parent groups can be important and (5) The child health care nurse can observe parents'/guardians' relationships with their children. Child health care nurses are uniquely familiar with infant massage and the benefits it provides both parents/guardians and their infants. Specifically, infant massage has a calming effect that reduces stress and strengthens the relationship between infants and their parents/guardians. To explore a notion of busyness within the context of pediatric acute care and how this influences the therapeutic relationship, nursing activities and teamwork between pediatric nurses and families. Ethnography was the research design. Semi-structured interviews and non-participant observation were used for data collection, which was undertaken in a level four pediatric inpatient unit in Sydney, New South Wales Australia. Brewer's (2000) ethnographic framework for analysis and interpretation was utilized and findings are presented as a realist tale. Interviews with 10 pediatric nurses and 10 parents, and 40 h of non-participant observations were conducted. Three themes are presented, which detail the cultural dimensions of busyness: i) the meaning of busyness; ii) relationships within the pediatric nursing team; and iii) shaping the therapeutic relationship. This ethnography identified how pediatric nurse and parental expectations and collaborative partnerships were re-shaped by busyness. Importantly, the ethnography has presented how busyness is perceived by pediatric nurses and parents, which require new negotiations and a rebalance of workload. Findings have implications for the healthcare workforce and organizational structure. Background: Neuroblastoma, the most common extra-cranial solid tumor found in children, carries a high mortality rate due to challenges with metastatic disease at diagnoses and relapse. 131I-Metaiodobenzylguanidine (I-MIBG) therapy provides targeted radiotherapy to treat neuroblastoma, but requires children to be isolated for radiation exposure, with limited access to the healthcare team while hospitalized. There is minimal research outlining the nurses' perspectives on caring for this patient population. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the nurses' experiences caring for children receiving 131I-MIBG therapy, focusing on nursing care, challenges, radiation exposure, and preparation. Methods: Ten nurses were recruited using purposeful sampling for this qualitative descriptive study. Semi-structured interview guides and conventional qualitative content analysis guided the data collection and analysis. Results: Nurses overwhelmingly felt isolated from their patients and a decreased sense of connection with the child. Although nurses felt prepared, they had more anxiety with the first patient experience and identified that parent engagement was essential. Overall, nurses shared they had support from written materials outlining the protocols, and members of the multidisciplinary team. More concern for radiation exposure was expressed by nurses of childbearing age and with handling bodily fluids. Discussion: Findings suggest that nurses would benefit from simulation experiences to help prepare for radiation exposure safety, strategies to engage the family in the child's care, and interacting with a child in single-room isolation. Because programs differ around the US, additional research exploring nurses' experiences is warranted to evaluate the best successes in providing 131I-MIBG therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In the neonatal intensive care unit, implementation of antibiotic stewardship programs has been challenging, especially for staff nurses. Purpose: To identify neonatal nurses' knowledge and attitudes toward antibiotic stewardship programs in neonatal intensive care units. Methods: This was a descriptive survey study to assess knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of neonatal nurses related to antibiotic stewardship. The survey consisted of 23 questions, 6 of which were open-ended. The questions evaluated perceptions of general understanding of antibiotic stewardship, administration of antibiotics, information and perspective about antibiotic use, antibiotic resistance, and availability and usage of resources and education related to antibiotics. The survey was posted online for about 3 months on the Web site of a professional organization of neonatal nurses. Results: Of the 78 neonatal nurses who responded to the survey, 39% were very familiar with the term antibiotic stewardship. The majority of participants did not question the treating provider about the choice, route, or dose of antibiotics. The majority also agreed that more education is needed to achieve the goal of incorporating principles of antibiotic stewardship more fully into practice in the neonatal intensive care unit. Implications for Practice: Results suggest that although most nurses are familiar with the term antibiotic stewardship , they would like to have more education on the appropriate use of antibiotics. Implications for Research: Further studies are needed to identify nurse involvement in applying the principles of antibiotic stewardship programs while working with the vulnerable population of preterm infants. Background: Neonatal nurses have a main role which include promote and facilitate breastfeeding in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This study was conducted to determine the practices and attitudes of nurses towards breastfeeding support, in NICU during the Covid-19 pandemics. Materials and Methods: The study was a cross-sectional descriptive survey design conducted with 252 nurses who were members of the Neonatology Nurses Society. The Data Collection Form, Survey Questionnaire, and the Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale (IIFAS) were used for data collection. Results: The IIFAS median score of the participants was 70.0 (IQR=9.0). Statistically differences in the IIFAS scores were found according to age (x2=11.703, p=0.008), education status in nursing (x2=9.257; p=0.01), and status of attending to international scientific meetings (Z=-2.360; p=0.018). Participants who were age between 26-30 years (n=76, 30.2%), had post-education degree in nursing (n=32, 12.7%), and attended to international scientific meetings (n=47, 18.6) had higher positive attitudes of breastfeeding. The nurses (n=126, 50%) stated that it was difficult to reach mothers in terms of breastfeeding for newborns, and 61.8% of them (n=156) stated that they had difficulty initiating the mother-baby attachment process in the NICU. Conclusions: Although the attitudes of NICU nurses towards breast milk and breastfeeding were at a moderate level in our study, they struggled to support and maintain the lactation and they implemented to a number of supportive feeding practice in NICUs. Background. Suboptimal pain control in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) remains despite theoretical advances. Paying attention to the views and suggestions of those who directly face the challenges of neonatal pain control in NICUs can help the improvement processes. Nurses are continuously present at patients’ bedsides and play a vital role in optimal pain management. Objectives. This study aimed to study nurses’ views of the quality of pain control in NICUs and the existing barriers. Material and methods. The cross-sectional, descriptive method was utilised to study 140 nurses that worked in three NICUs in Iran. They were selected using convenience sampling and filled out a questionnaire. The information was analysed using descriptive statistical methods. Results. The results showed that although most participants had good knowledge of the basic concepts of neonatal pain, some of them had problems in some areas, such as using neonatal pain assessment tools. 40% of them thought that pain was not managed properly in the NICU. The participants also mentioned barriers to proper neonatal pain management, including work overload, inappropriate professional knowledge, lack of organisational structure, poor collaboration of team members and low pain prevention. Conclusions. It is necessary to improve the quality of caregiving with respect to pain management in the NICU. There were individual, inter-professional and organisational barriers that have to be sufficiently understood to allow for the taking of significant steps to improve pain control in NICUs. Purpose: This study aimed to provide basic data for developing interventions to relieve the end-of-life care stress experienced by pediatric nurses by examining the relationships of end-of-life care stress with compassionate competence and attitudes toward end-of-life care. Methods: Data were collected via a survey that was conducted from September 10 to September 30, 2018 and administered to 113 nurses who had worked for more than 6 months in a pediatric unit at a tertiary hospital in Seoul, South Korea. The data were analyzed for frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, and the independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation analysis were conducted using SPSS version 25.0. Results: End-of-life care stress among pediatric nurses had a weak positive correlation (r=0.216, P<0.05) with compassionate competence and had no significant correlation with attitudes toward end-of-life care. Among the sub-factors of end-of-life care stress, psychological difficulties had a weak positive correlation with sensitivity (r=0.309, P <0.01) and communication (r=0.230, P<0.05), which are aspects of compassionate competence. Lack of knowledge about end-of-life care had a weak positive correlation with communication (r=0.209, P<0.05) as an aspect of compassionate competence. Conclusion: To improve the quality of end-of-life care provided by pediatric nurses, it is necessary to improve their compassionate competence and reduce their end-of-life care stress by developing education and support programs tailored to the characteristics of children and specific communication methods. Introduction: Language barriers challenge patient- and family-centered care. Literature guiding pediatric nurses caring for patients and families with limited English proficiency in the inpatient setting is nonexistent. The purposes of this phenomenological study were to understand pediatric nurses' experiences in caring for patients and families with limited English proficiency and to explore how nurses navigate the communication gap. Method: A purposive sample of 15 pediatric Registered Nurses at a large urban children's medical center participated in face-to-face semistructured interviews. Verbatim transcribed interviews were analyzed line-by-line and categorized into themes. Results: Themes included personal framework of care, consequences of caring, starting off right, nurse sensing, verbal/nonverbal methods, and interpreters. Discussion: Nurses did not perceive differences in task-oriented care; they described compromised personal paradigms, held negative feelings, and utilized verbal/nonverbal communication methods. Background: Moral distress is a significant concern for nurses as it can lead to burnout and intentions to leave the profession. Pediatric nurses encounter stressful and ethically challenging situations when they care for suspected victims of child maltreatment. Data on pediatric nurses' moral distress are limited, as most research in this field has been done in adult inpatient and intensive care units. Aim: The purpose of this study was to describe pediatric nurses' moral distress and evaluate the impact of caring for suspected victims of child maltreatment on nurses' moral distress, burnout, and intention to leave. Design and method: This descriptive cross-sectional correlational study was conducted in a mid-Atlantic, urban area Magnet pediatric level I trauma center that cares for over 1800 cases of suspected child maltreatment annually. An anonymous electronic survey was sent to all the nurses working at the hospital. Ethical considerations: Institutional Review Board approval was received from the first author's university and the hospital where the study was conducted. Findings: Overall, nurses (N = 146) reported low levels of moral distress with a mean score of 59.54 (SD = 49.22) and a range of 0–300 on the Moral Distress Scale Neonatal–Pediatric version. Although the frequency of caring for suspected child maltreatment victims did not affect nurses' moral distress, caring for victims with fatal maltreatment contributed to nurses' intention to leave, χ2 (1) = 5.35, p = 0.02. Conclusion: The results of this study add to the understanding of moral distress in pediatric nursing. Caring for victims with fatal maltreatment impacts pediatric nurses' intention to leave. Aims: The aim of this study is to determine correlation between paediatric nurses' "ethical intelligence" with "quality of work life" and "caring behaviour." Design: Descriptive correlational study. Methods: Data were collected with EIQ, QWL and CBI. Two hundred and one nurses and 201 caregivers of children hospitalized in a paediatric hospital in Tehran were randomly selected as participants. Data were analysed by SPSS. The data were collected in 2019. Results: Comparison of the subscale "ethical intelligence" with the scale "quality of work life" indicated a significant positive correlation between "honesty" with "job and carrier satisfaction" and "forgiveness" with "job and carrier satisfaction". In addition, findings showed a significant positive correlation between "honesty" and "control at work" and between "accountability" with "home–work interface." There was no significant correlation between "ethical intelligence" and "caring behaviours" and between nurses' "quality of work life" and "caring behaviours." Background. Neonates are exposed to many stimuli in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Pharmacological agents and Nonpharmacological Interventions (NPI) are used to reduce or prevent such stimuli. This study was conducted to determine which NPI's NICU nurses use and the impact of these interventions. Methods. The research was of qualitative descriptive design. Sixty-eight nurses work in in three neonatal intensive units of two state hospitals in Istanbul participated and constituted the study sample. The data were collected with two questionnaires, which were analyzed using numbers, percentages and the chi-squared test. Results. It was found that 98.5% of the neonatal nurses had performed one or more NPI. The nurses more commonly performed the interventions of positioning (86.8%), reducing environmental stimuli (79.4%), picking up the neonate (75%), initiating non-nutritive sucking (73.5%), offering breast milk (73.5%) and massaging (58.8%), but performed the inventions of feeding sucrose (48.5%), kangaroo care (42.6%) and exposing the neonate to music (13.2%) to a lesser degree. It was concluded that these interventions reduced the neonate's crying and pain and regulated oxygen saturation. Conclusions. Background: Infants who are admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) may experience significant symptom burden. Parents are often distressed by these symptoms, which can affect their long-term coping and distress. There is limited research examining nurse perceptions of infant well-being (symptoms, suffering, and quality of life [QOL]) and associations with nurse distress. Objective: The objective of this descriptive study was to explore associations between nurse perceptions of infant well-being and self-reported distress. Methods: Nurses caring for infants with potentially life-threatening/life-limiting conditions were recruited from a Level IV NICU in the Midwestern United States as a part of a study on infant symptom burden. Nurses reported their perceptions of infant well-being and their own distress on a 5-point Likert scale. Surveys were administered at the bedside weekly for up to 12 weeks, depending on length of stay. Infant suffering and QOL were examined in relation to nurse distress. A cross-classified multilevel model was used to account for dependence within nurse and within patient. Results: A total of 593 surveys were collected from nurses. Using a cross-classified multilevel model with variables entered simultaneously, nurse perceptions of greater infant suffering and lower infant QOL were significantly associated with greater nurse distress. Discussion: Preliminary evidence shows that greater perceived infant suffering and lower perceived infant QOL may be associated with greater levels of self-reported distress in NICU nurses. Further work is needed to better understand factors related to symptom management in the NICU and the potential role of caregiver distress and compassion fatigue in NICU nurses. Aim: Perinatal death is often preceded by an end-of-life decision (ELD). Disparate hospital policies, complex legal frameworks and ethically difficult cases make attitudes important. This study investigated attitudes of neonatologists and nurses towards perinatal ELDs.Methods: A survey was handed out to all neonatologists and neonatal nurses in all eight neonatal intensive care units in Flanders, Belgium in May 2017. Respondents indicated agreement with statements regarding perinatal ELDs on a Likert-scale and sent back questionnaires via mail.Results: The response rate was 49.5% (302/610). Most neonatologists and nurses found nontreatment decisions such as withholding or withdrawing treatment acceptable (90-100%). Termination of pregnancy when the foetus is viable in cases of severe or lethal foetal problems was considered highly acceptable in both groups (80-98%). Physicians and nurses do not find different ELDs equally acceptable, e.g. nurses more often than physicians (74% vs 60%, p = 0.017) agree that it is acceptable in certain cases to administer medication with the explicit intention of hastening death.Conclusion: There was considerable support for both prenatal and neonatal ELDs, even for decisions that currently fall outside the Belgian legal framework. Aim: Pediatric nurses play a crucial role in the assessment and management of a child's pain. The main purpose of nursing care is to eliminate pain and improve the quality of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge, practice and beliefs of pediatric nurses about pain. Materials and Methods: The current study using a descriptive research design included 102 pediatric nurses working at Akdeniz University Hospital who agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected using a questionnaire developed by the researchers via a face to face interview method also by the researchers. Results: Approximately half of these pediatric nurses (40.2%) are in the 20-29 age group, 51% are married and 80.4% are bachelor's degree holders. In this study, 56.9% of the nurses stated that they did not receive any education about pain and 51% stated that they had insufficient knowledge about the evaluation of pain. Although 67.6% of these nurses state that they have a pain scale in their clinics, 65.6% of the nurses in our study group do not know the name of the scale. Although pain is subjective, only 68.6% of the nurses believed that the child/mother had expressed the pain and 22.5% stated that the cause of the pain was always an illness. In the study, 88.2% of nurses stated that analgesia should not be given before the onset of pain. Conclusion: It is very important to make in-service training programs for pain which is considered as a vital finding. It is recommended that nurses increase their level of knowledge to counter false beliefs/practices about pain. Aims and objectives: This qualitative study explored the experiences of neonatal nurses with facilitating closeness between parents and babies with congenital abnormalities in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Background: Babies with congenital abnormalities often require admission to the neonatal intensive care unit. Parents may experience emotional distancing from their baby, due to their response to their baby's congenital abnormality, as well as physical separation due to their baby's hospitalisation in the NICU. NICU nurses can help facilitate the development of closeness between babies and parents in the NICU. Method: This qualitative interpretive description study involved face‐to‐face, semi‐structured interviews with twelve neonatal nurses following which the data collected were thematically analysed. The consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) checklist were used in preparing this paper. Results: Three major themes emerged from the analysis—"Everyone copes differently," "You have to focus on what is the normal thing" and "It's very much an individualised approach." Participants often felt unprepared to care for babies with congenital abnormalities and implemented coping mechanisms to overcome the emotional labour they experienced. Skin‐to‐skin cuddles were considered the most beneficial strategy for parents to develop closeness with their baby. Participants recognised that they sometimes "pushed" parents into engaging with their baby. Participants highlighted the importance of individualised, supportive care for these parents. Conclusions: Neonatal nurses require increased education about congenital abnormalities and individualised care to support them in caring for babies with congenital abnormalities. Objectives: The usage of Complementary Health Approaches (CHA) and its popularity have been increasing among both children and pediatric nurses. The aims of this study were to (1) determine the knowledge and usage levels of pediatric nurses about CHA, (2) describe the experiences of nurses about CHA, and (3) evaluate the attitudes of nurses toward CHA. Methods: This was multicenter study. A total of 1,450 pediatric nurses who are working at the pediatric departments of different hospitals in Turkey participated in the study between June 2013 and February 2014. Around 1,303 female and 147 male pediatric nurses, in total 1,450, were included in the study. The semi-structured questionnaire had three sections. The first section composed of 14 questions about sociodemographic characteristics. The second section contained seven questions about the nurses' professional practices with respect to CHA. The third section contained eight questions about the nurses' attitudes to CHA. Results: The study revealed that 90.6% of the nurses used CHA, and primarily made use of praying (82.3%), massage (76.6%), and vitamins (60.2%), respectively. Most of the nurses used CHA for relaxation. Approximately half of the nurses did not asked the families of their CHA usage. More than half of the nurses (58.8%) stated that nurses were not responsible for informing patients about CHA. It was found that the nurses had negative experiences with CHA such as allergies, pain, and being upset. The most frequently indicated positive experience was "feeling better both physically and psychologically." Conclusions: It is extremely important that nurses have knowledge about CHA. Nurses should question parents' use of CHA and inform parents about CHA' benefits and potential risks. Considering the personal/professional experiences, it is necessary to evaluate the positive/negative effects of CHA. This study aimed to develop and validate a scientific and standardized knowledge, attitude and practice questionnaire of pediatric nurses' preventive care for central venous device-related thrombosis among hospitalized children. Pediatric nurses play a significant role in the prevention of central venous device-related thrombosis for hospialized children. However, the status of pediatric nurses' knowledge, attitude and practice of central venous device-related thrombosis prevention has not been revealed due to the lack of assessment tools. This questionnaire was framed by the theory of knowledge, attitude and practice. The item pool was compiled through a literature review and a preliminary questionnaire was formed based on expert consultation. A total of 457 pediatric nurses from 10 tertiary class A general hospitals and specialized pediatric hospitals in China were selected for pre-survey. Item analysis, reliability and validity test were conducted to refine and evaluate the items to form a formal questionnaire. A total of 54 items were proposed in three dimensions of knowledge, attitude and practice. In the exploratory factor analysis, five, three and three common factors were extracted for each dimension, accounting for 60.552%, 89.829% and 84.258% of the total variance, respectively. The content validity index of the three dimensions ranged from 0.968 to 1.000 at the scale level and from 0.833 to 1.000 at the item level. The Cronbach's α coefficients for the total questionnaire and each dimension were between 0.926 and 0.973. The retest reliability for the total questionnaire and each dimension was between 0.688 and 0.898. The proposed questionnaire has good reliability and validity and it can be applied to evaluate pediatric nurses' knowledge, attitude and practice in preventing central venous device-related thrombosis for hospitalized children. This study aims to outline the current workplace culture of medication practice in a pediatric medical ward. The objective is to explore the perceptions of nurses in a pediatric clinical setting as to why medication administration errors occur. As nurses have a central role in the medication process, it is essential to explore nurses' perceptions of the factors influencing the medication process. Without this understanding, it is difficult to develop effective prevention strategies aimed at reducing medication administration errors. Previous studies were limited to exploring a single and specific aspect of medication safety. The methods used in these studies were limited to survey designs which may lead to incomplete or inadequate information being provided. This study is phase 1 on an action research project. Data collection included a direct observation of nurses during medication preparation and administration, audit based on the medication policy, and guidelines and focus groups with nursing staff. A thematic analysis was undertaken by each author independently to analyze the observation notes and focus group transcripts. Simple descriptive statistics were used to analyze the audit data. The study was conducted in a specialized pediatric medical ward. Four key themes were identified from the combined quantitative and qualitative data: (1) understanding medication errors, (2) the busy-ness of nurses, (3) the physical environment, and (4) compliance with medication policy and practice guidelines. Workload, frequent interruptions to process, poor physical environment design, lack of preparation space, and impractical medication policies are identified as barriers to safe medication practice. Overcoming these barriers requires organizations to review medication process policies and engage nurses more in medication safety research and in designing clinical guidelines for their own practice.
