Introduction Methods Results Discussion and Conclusions In recent years gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB) use appears to have increased. This study aimed to determine: (i) population rates of GHB‐related death in Australia, 2001–2021; and (ii) whether there have been changes in the characteristics of GHB‐related death in Australia over the period 2001–2023.Retrospective study of all Australian cases in which GHB was a mechanism contributory to death retrieved from the National Coronial Information System (n = 217). Joinpoint regression models were used to analyse trends in overall rates.Death rates were stable between 2001 and 2015 (‘stable period’) (annual percent change [APC] = 3.7) but showed marked acceleration between 2016 and 2021 (‘accelerated period’) (APC = 44.4). Circumstances of death were: unintentional toxicity (81.6%), intentional toxicity (5.1%), self‐harm (6.0%), traumatic injury (7.4%). Compared to the stable period, later cases were slightly older (34.2 vs. 30.7 years, p < 0.05), less likely to be employed (odds ratio [OR] 0.4), but more likely to have substance use problems (OR 3.9), a history of injecting drug use (OR 3.5), mental health problems (OR 3.6), and to have present in their blood at toxicological screening opioids (OR 3.2) and hypnosedatives (OR 3.7). The median blood GHB concentration was 170 mg/L, (range 0–3210), which did not change significantly. There were no differences in major organ pathology, but the proportion with aspiration pneumonia declined (OR 0.4).GHB‐related death rates increased from 2016, accompanied by changes in case characteristics. To describe the burden and causes of disease in Mexican women in 1990 and 2019, based on the data disaggregation by age groups and states. Also, to evaluate the relationship of years of healthy life lost with the Socio-demographic Index (SDI) and with the Healthcare Access and Quality (HAQ) Index. This was an ecological descriptive study. Based on the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study study, the age-standardized and age-specific rates for mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were reported. At the national level, the all-cause age-standardized rates for Mexican women decreased in mortality −28.8%; YLLs -39.8%; YLDs −1.3%; and DALYs −26.2%. For 2019, the indicators analyzed had the worst performances in Chiapas and Chihuahua, while women in Sinaloa had the lowest age-standardized rates. In 1990, it is worth noting that there was a remarkable presence of CDs, mainly in YLLs. In all age groups, diabetes mellitus was the leading cause of DALYs in Mexico's 32 states, followed by CKD (in 24 states), and ischemic heart disease (in 18 states). In both 1990 and 2019, a negative and statistically significant correlation between DALYs and the HAQ Index was evident. The correlation between DALYs and the SDI was only significant in 1990. In the last 30 years, the burden of disease on Mexican women has undergone substantial changes that reflect progress in the improvement of their health conditions. However, the current scenario is complex because the convergence of communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases, and injuries is evident, which implies important challenges that must be addressed as soon as possible. This study presents the trends of age-standardised incidence and mortality rates of common cancers in Brunei Darussalam from 2011 to 2020. All cancer cases diagnosed among Brunei Darussalam citizens and permanent residents in the period 2011 to 2020 were included in the study. De-identified data were provided by the CanReg5 based BDCR, Ministry of Health Brunei Darussalam. The annual age-standardised incidence and mortality rates per 100,000 persons were standardised by the direct method using the World Health Organization (WHO) world standard population distribution. Joinpoint regression analyses were used to study the incidence and mortality trends of cancer in Brunei Darussalam over the 2011–2020 period. Trends were expressed as average annual percent change (AAPC) over 2011 to 2020, or annual percent change (APC) for a given time period. There were a total of 6,495 new cancer cases diagnosed and 3,359 death cases recorded from 2011 to 2020, in Brunei Darussalam. The five common cancers for males were colorectal, lung and bronchus, prostate, liver, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Among females, the five most common cancers were breast, colorectal, lung and bronchus, corpus uteri and cervix uteri. The five leading cancer deaths for males were lung and bronchus, colorectal, liver, prostate, and stomach, while for females, the five leading cancer deaths were breast, lung and bronchus, colorectal, ovary, and cervix uteri. There was a significant increase in the incidence trend of corpus uteri (AAPC : 13.3 ) and a significant decline in the incidence trend for cervical cancer (AAPC : - 4.5 ) from 2011 to 2020. There was a significant increase in the mortality trend of female breast cancer from 2011 to 2015 (APC : 16.3 ), but the trend significantly declined from 2015 to 2020 (APC : - 12.5 ). We also found a significant decrease in mortality trends for stomach cancer (AAPC : - 4.7 ) from 2011 to 2020 for both genders combined. The burden of common cancers is expected to continue to grow with ageing population, effective public health interventions targeting high burden cancers and high-risk groups, and control of modifiable risk factors will continue to be the essential approaches in reducing cancer burden. Aims: To (i) assess the population mortality rates of cocaine‐related deaths in Australia, 2000 to 2021; (ii) determine the circumstances of death and case characteristics; and (iii) determine their toxicological profile. Design: Retrospective study of cocaine‐related deaths in Australia, 2000 to 2021, retrieved from the National Coronial Information System. Setting: Australia‐wide. Cases A total of 884 cases, mean age = 33.8 (SD, 10.0) years and 86.5% (n = 765) male. Measurements Information was collected on characteristics, manner of death and toxicology. Only cases in which the presence of blood cocaine and/or metabolites were included. Findings Population rates did not significantly increase during 2001–2011 (annual percentage change [APC] = 1.5; CI, −3.2, 6.5), but from 2012, there was a marked acceleration (APC = 20.0, 95% CI, 15.5, 25.3). Circumstances of death were unintentional drug toxicity (70.7%, n = 625), intentional self‐harm (17.8%, n = 157), traumatic accident (11.5%, n = 102). The proportion of cases constituted by unintentional toxicity declined across the study period (APC = −2.6; CI, −3.1, −2.1). There was a substantial decline in the proportion of cases with a history of injecting drug use (APC = −5.7; CI, −6.5, −4.9) and with a history of substance use problems (APC = −3.2; CI, −3.9, −2.5). Both cocaine (0.100 vs 0.050 mg/L, P < 0.001) and benzoylecgonine (0.590 vs 0.240 mg/L, P < 0.001) concentrations were higher amongst toxicity cases than in cases of death from traumatic injury. Cocaethylene was present in 26.4% (n = 233), levamisole in 18.6% (n = 164) and lignocaine in 11.5% (n = 102). Psychoactive drugs in addition to cocaine were present in 92.9% (n = 821), most commonly opioids (50.5%, n = 446), alcohol (47.1%, n = 416), hypnosedatives (43.2%, n = 382) and psychostimulants (30.3%, n = 268). There was a steady decline in the proportion of opioid positive cases (APC = −5.4; CI, −6.3, −4.5). Conclusions: There was a large increase in cocaine‐related deaths across Australia from 2000 to 2021. This was accompanied by changes in case profiles, with histories of injecting drug use and substance use problems, as well as recent opioid use, becoming less prominent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) frequently complicates allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell (allo‐HCT) and solid organ transplantation (SOT). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed risk factors and outcomes of CDI occurring within 30 days of transplant. Results: Between March 2010 and June 2015, 466 allo‐HCT and 1454 SOT were performed. The CDI cumulative incidence (95% CI) was 10% (8–13) and 4% (3–5), following allo‐HCT and SOT, respectively (p <.01), occurring at a median (range) 7.5 days (1–30) and 11 (1–30), respectively (p =.18). In multivariate analysis, fluoroquinolones use within 14 days pre‐transplantation was a risk factor for CDI following allo‐HCT (HR 4.06 [95% CI 1.31–12.63], p =.02), and thoracic organ(s) transplantation was a risk factor for CDI following SOT (HR 3.03 [95% CI 1.31–6.98]) for lung and 3.90 (1.58–9.63) for heart and heart/kidney transplant, p =.02. Compared with no‐CDI patients, the length of stay (LOS) was prolonged in both allo‐HCT (35 days [19–141] vs. 29 [13–164], p <.01) and SOT with CDI (16.5 [4–101] vs. 7 [0–159], p <.01), though not directly attributed to CDI. In allo‐HCT, severe acute graft‐versus‐host disease (aGVHD) occurred more frequently in patients with CDI (33.3% vs. 15.8% without CDI, p =.01) and most aGVHD (87.5%) followed CDI. Non‐relapse mortality or overall survival, not attributed to CDI, were also similar in both allo‐HCT and SOT. Conclusions: Early post‐transplant CDI is frequent, associated with fluoroquinolones use in allo‐HCT and the transplanted organ in SOT, and is associated with longer LOS in both the groups without difference in survival but with increased aGVHD in allo‐HCT. Objective. To describe the time trends of mortality attributable to malnutrition in Colombia in the period 2005- 2019, overall and disaggregated by age and sex. Methods. Ecological study based on secondary data on mortality due to undernutrition as the underlying cause of death according to vital statistics. Crude, age- and sex-specific, and age-standardized annual mortality rates per 100 000 population were calculated. The direct method was used, and the reference population was that proposed by the World Health Organization for 2000-2025. A segmented linear regression or changepoint analysis was performed. Results. A total of 26 200 records of deaths due to undernutrition were analyzed for the study period, which corresponds to 0.84% of the total number of deaths in Colombia. The mortality rate in the 0-to-4-year age group was 9.9 per 100 000 population; in the 85-and-older age group, it reached 137 deaths per 100 000 population. All significant adjustments had a negative impact on the model trend, indicating a reduction in mortality rates. The annual percent change was significant for the period 2007-2017, when the mortality rate decreased 2.8% in men (95% confidence interval [95%CI]: -4.3, -1.3) and 3.2% in women (95%CI: -5.0, -1.4). The overall prevalence of mortality attributable to undernutrition in Colombia is low, increasing at the extremes of age, and has been following a downward trend, especially among younger age groups and women. This study investigates the relationship between terrorism and interpersonal violence by conducting cross-national analyses on the effects of terrorism mortality rates on homicide rates. Results show that terrorism appears to be robustly and positively associated with homicide. This finding is based on the calculation of a series of independently pooled and twoways fixed-effects models on a panel that incorporates more than 165 countries over 24 years (1991–2014). The results lend tentative support to the so-called "legitimation-habituation" hypothesis that was formulated in regard to the effects of security-related stress on homicide rates in Israel more than 30 years ago. The topic has been largely neglected ever since. While confirming a positive relationship between terrorism and homicide, this study concludes that a causal influence of terrorism on homicide rates is conceivable, but cannot conclusively be proven within the confines of the research design. Existing literature argues that the mortality rate of a specific age is affected not only by its own lags but by the lags of neighbouring ages, known as cohort effects. Although these effects are assumed constant in most studies, they can be dynamic over a long timespan. Consequently, popular mortality models with time-invariant age-dependent coefficients, including the Lee-Carter (LC) and vector autoregression (VAR) models, are incapable of modelling these dynamic cohort effects. To capture such dynamic patterns, we propose a time-varying coefficient spatial-temporal autoregressive (TVSTAR) model that allows for flexible time-dependent parameters. The proposed TVSTAR model is compatible with multi-population modelling and enjoys sound statistical properties. Using empirical results of mortality data from the United Kingdom (UK) and France over the period 1950–2016, we show that the TVSTAR model consistently outperforms the LC (Li-Lee, or LL) and the original STAR model under the single-population (multi-population) modelling framework. Finally, our empirical results suggest that cohort effects strengthen over time for very old ages in both the UK and France. Using simulation evidence, we argue that this observed upward trend can be caused by the overall advancement in the mortality evolution of the same cohort. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Epidemiological trends for major causes of death and disability, such as stroke, may be monitored using administrative data to guide public health initiatives and service delivery. We calculated admissions rates for ischaemic stroke, intracerebral haemorrhage and subarachnoid haemorrhage between 1 January 2005 and December 31st, 2013 and rates of 30-day mortality and 365-day mortality in 30-day survivors to 31 December 2014 for patients aged 15 years or older from New South Wales, Australia. Annual Average Percentage Change in rates was estimated using negative binomial regression. Of 81,703 eligible admissions, 64,047 (78.4%) were ischaemic strokes and 13,302 (16.3%) and 4,778 (5.8%) were intracerebral and subarachnoid haemorrhages, respectively. Intracerebral haemorrhage admissions significantly declined by an average of 2.2% annually (95% Confidence Interval = −3.5% to −0.9%) (p < 0.001). Thirty-day mortality rates significantly declined for ischaemic stroke (Average Percentage Change −2.9%, 95% Confidence Interval = −5.2% to −1.0%) (p = 0.004) and subarachnoid haemorrhage (Average Percentage Change = −2.6%, 95% Confidence Interval = −4.8% to −0.2%) (p = 0.04). Mortality at 365-days amongst 30-day survivors of ischaemic stroke and intracerebral haemorrhage was stable over time and increased in subarachnoid haemorrhage (Annual Percentage Change 6.2%, 95% Confidence Interval = −0.1% to 12.8%), although not significantly (p = 0.05). Improved prevention may have underpinned declining intracerebral haemorrhage rates while survival gains suggest that innovations in care are being successfully translated. Mortality in patients surviving the acute period is unchanged and may be increasing for subarachnoid haemorrhage warranting investment in post-discharge care and secondary prevention. The Mediterranean region is characterized by intense rainfall events giving rise to devastating floods. In Maghreb countries such as Morocco, there is a strong need for forecasting systems to reduce the impacts of floods. The development of such a system in the case of ungauged catchments is complicated but remote sensing products could overcome the lack of in-situ measurements. The soil moisture content can strongly modulate the magnitude of flood events and consequently is a crucial parameter to take into account for flood modeling. In this study, different soil moisture products (ESA-CCI, SMOS, SMOS-IC, ASCAT satellite products and ERA5 reanalysis) are compared to in-situ measurements and one continuous soil moisture accounting (SMA) model for basins located in the High-Atlas Mountains, upstream of the city of Marrakech. The results show that the SMOS-IC satellite product and the ERA5 reanalysis are best correlated with observed soil moisture and with the SMA model outputs. The different soil moisture datasets were also compared to estimate the initial soil moisture condition for an event-based hydrological model based on the Soil Conservation Service Curve Number (SCS-CN). The ASCAT, SMOS-IC and ERA5 products performed equally well in validation to simulate floods, outperforming daily in situ soil moisture measurements that may not be representative of the whole catchment soil moisture conditions. The results also indicated that the daily time step may not fully represent the saturation state before a flood event, due to the rapid decay of soil moisture after rainfall in these semi-arid environments. Indeed, at the hourly time step, ERA5 and in-situ measurements were found to better represent the initial soil moisture conditions of the SCS-CN model by comparison with the daily time step. The results of this work could be used to implement efficient flood modelling and forecasting systems in semi-arid regions where soil moisture measurements are lacking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cranioplasty following decompressive craniectomy is of low surgical complexity, so much so that it has become the "beginners" cranial case. However, these "simple" procedures may have high complication rates. Identification of specific risk factors would allow targeted intervention to lower the complication rates. The aim of this study was to assess the rate of complications and to evaluate potential risk factors. We conducted a review of all patients who underwent cranioplasty in our center following decompressive craniectomy for stroke or brain trauma between 2009 and 2016. One hundred fifty-two patients were identified. Fifty-three percent were male. Mean age was 48 (range 11–78). Median time from craniectomy until cranioplasty was 102 days (range 14–378). The overall rate of complications, such as postoperative bleeding, seizures, postoperative infection, and hydrocephalus, was 30%. The mortality rate was 1%. None of the following potential risk factors was associated with significantly increased risk of periprocedural complications: gender (p = 0.34), age (p = 0.39), cause of initial surgery (p = 0.08), duration of surgery (p = 0.59), time of surgery (0.24), surgical experience (p = 0.17), and time from craniectomy until cranioplasty (p = 0.27). The 30-day complication rate following cranioplasty is high, but serious permanent deficits from these complications were rare. This article reports on a randomized field experiment in which potential work migrants from Nepal to Malaysia and the Persian Gulf countries are provided with information on wages and mortality incidences at their intended destinations. It is found that, particularly for the group of potential migrants without prior foreign migration experience, the information changes their expectations of earnings and mortality risks abroad, which further changes their actual migration decisions. Using the exogenous variation in expectations, it is estimated that the elasticity of migration with respect to mortality rate expectation is 0.8, and the elasticity of migration with respect to earnings expectation is 1.1. [Objective]The present paper aimed to identify the integrated effect of Pellioditis spp. PC) 1 and B. bassiana Bbn6 on tobacco White Grubs (Holotrichia parallela). [ Method]The tests were carried out to study the effects of Bbn6, P01 and Bbn6 + P01 1 on the mortal strike of H. parallela in laboratory; According to the bioactivity of Bbn6 to P01 , a field experiment was set to comprehensively evaluate the integrated effect of P01 and Bbn6. [ Result] (i)The corrected mortality rate of Bbn6 to P01 was no more than 5 % (0. 34 % -4. 71 % ) during 24 - 120 hours; The corrected mortality rate of grubs treated by Bbn6 + P01 was significantly higher than that treated with P01 and Bbn6 alone; Treated grubs by Bbn6 + P01 , P01 and Bbn6 gained the corrected mortality rate with 96.67 % , 83.33 % and 30.00 % after 72 hours, (ii) In the field application, the treatment mixed with Bbn6 and P01 was significantly better than those treatments of P01 and Bbn6 alone on the tobacco stem circumference, maximum leaf and maximum leaf length. The insect reduce rates of Bbn6 + P01 , P01 and Bbn6 was 73.69 % , 49. 19 % and 45.05 % after 123 days. Background: Firearm-related death rates and years of potential life lost (YPLL) vary widely between population subgroups and states. However, changes or inflections in temporal trends within subgroups and states are not fully documented. We assessed temporal patterns and inflections in the rates of firearm deaths and %YPLL due to firearms for overall and by sex, age, race/ethnicity, intent, and states in the United States between 1999 and 2016. Methods: We extracted age-adjusted firearm mortality and YPLL rates per 100,000, and %YPLL from 1999 to 2016 by using the WONDER (Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research) database. We used Joinpoint Regression to assess temporal trends, the inflection points, and annual percentage change (APC) from 1999 to 2016. Results: National firearm mortality rates were 10.3 and 11.8 per 100,000 in 1999 and 2016, with two distinct segments; a plateau until 2014 followed by an increase of APC = 7.2% (95% CI 3.1, 11.4). YPLL rates were from 304.7 and 338.2 in 1999 and 2016 with a steady APC increase in %YPLL of 0.65% (95% CI 0.43, 0.87) from 1999 to an inflection point in 2014, followed by a larger APC in %YPLL of 5.1% (95% CI 0.1, 10.4). The upward trend in firearm mortality and YPLL rates starting in 2014 was observed in subgroups of male, non-Hispanic blacks, Hispanic whites and for firearm assaults. The inflection points for firearm mortality and YPLL rates also varied across states. Conclusions: Within the United States, firearm mortality rates and YPLL remained constant between 1999 and 2014 and has been increasing subsequently. Introduction: All the surgeries carry risks, which may lead to readmission at a later date. At present, there is limited Trauma and Orthopaedic (T&O) specific data in the literature. As a result, a prospective regional service evaluation aimed to discover the current complication and readmission rates across all T&O procedures and identify any factors associated with these outcomes.Methods: Data were collected at six sites across Yorkshire and Humber for all T&O procedures during October 2016. Patient demographics and procedure-specific data were collected. Post-operative complications and length of stay were recorded. All the patients were then followed up for 30 days post-discharge to determine if they experienced complications which resulted in readmission and further surgical intervention.Results: 1411 patients having a total of 64 operations were recorded with 1391 completing follow-up (98.5%). Overall in-patient complication rate was 8.4% with the readmission rate being 4.4%. An ASA grade of three or more was found to be associated with readmission. Procedure-related factors such as the use of VTE prophylaxis and prophylactic antibiotics, as well as the elective nature of certain operations were negatively associated with readmission. The largest subgroup of patients was those undergoing total hip (THR) or knee replacements (TKR). For these 234 patients, the readmission rate for TKR and THR being 3.77% and 3.13%, respectively.Conclusions: This large, multi-centre project describes readmission rates following trauma and orthopaedic surgery. The global and continental crash death rate trends, adjusted for under-reporting, death definition, and missing data, are analyzed, modelled, and compared with international findings considering data for 215 countries for 35 years. Although global reported mortality rates required 25% to 44% adjustments, that estimated by World Health Organization (WHO) and World Bank showed far greater rates. The model developed for global mortality rates per population though indicates a peak threshold, the current rate is expected to continue for some years before descending. In contradiction with WHO, Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), and World Bank (WB), the model indicates a drop of 22% in mortality rate by 2025. The rate for Europe, Oceania, and Asia drop to one eighth, one half, and one sixth, respectively. The rates for Africa doesn't change, and that for South America increases by 15%. The current global mortality per 10,000 vehicles drops exponentially by 38% toward 2025. The mortality rate per 10,000 vehicles for the various continents are expected to drop by 34% to 68%. The earlier rates showed a much faster drop than that per population. The observant reason could be the faster vehicle growth compared with population. The findings call for extensive traffic safety plans and tense implementation efforts in Africa, South America, and Asia to have faster global descending trends in mortality rates. Objective: To evaluate the mortality rates for prostate cancer according to geographical areas in Peru between 2005 and 2014. Materials and Methods: Information was extracted from the Deceased Registry of the Peruvian Ministry of Health. We analysed age‐standardised mortality rates (world population) per 100 000 men. Spatial autocorrelation was determined according to the Moran Index. In addition, we used Cluster Map to explore relations between regions. Results: Mortality rates increased from 20.9 (2005–2009) to 24.1 (2010–2014) per 100 000 men, an increase of 15.2%. According to regions, during the period 2010–2014, the coast had the highest mortality rate (28.9 per 100 000), whilst the rainforest had the lowest (7.43 per 100 000). In addition, there was an increase in mortality in the coast and a decline in the rainforest over the period 2005–2014. The provinces with the highest mortality were Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Callao, Lima, Ica, and Arequipa. Moreover, these provinces (except Arequipa) showed increasing trends during the years under study. The provinces with the lowest observed prostate cancer mortality rates were Loreto, Ucayali, and Madre de Dios. This study showed positive spatial autocorrelation (Moran's I: 0.30, P = 0.01). The provinces with the highest mortality were Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Callao, Lima, Ica, and Arequipa. Moreover, these provinces (except Arequipa) showed increasing trends during the years under study. The provinces with the lowest observed prostate cancer mortality rates were Loreto, Ucayali, and Madre de Dios. This study showed positive spatial autocorrelation (Moran's I: 0.30, P = 0.01). Foundation: Data about mortality are tools to assess the risk of death in a population and the disease repercussion on health, therefore they constitute essential information for the analysis of the situation of health and surveillance in public health. Objective: to describe the behavior of mortality at the Cienfuegos province. Methods: cross-descriptive study which analyzed the total of deceased (N=10 558) in the period from 2013 to 2015, according the selected clinical- epidemiological variables. Data was obtained through the Automatic System MortaPro y Mortagen, at the Department of Medical Registration and Statistics of the Provincial Health Office. Triennial rates were calculated and the reason for masculinity. Results: there was an increase in general mortality by 3.4% in the period studied and a male over-mortality. The municipality with the highest mortality rate was Cienfuegos, followed by Cumanayagua and Cruces. The deaths occurred mainly at home. Heart diseases, malignant tumors and cerebrovascular diseases occupied the first causes of death, respectively. The mortality of children younger than a year was related to the conditions originated in the perinatal period and among them intraventricular hemorrhages. Maternal deaths were due to direct causes. Conclusion: in the province of Cienfuegos there was an increase in mortality in the period studied. We study the influence of a mortality trade-off in a nonlocal reaction-diffusion-mutation equation that we introduce to model the invasion of cane toads in Australia. This model is built off of one that has attracted attention recently, in which the population of toads is structured by a phenotypical trait that governs the spatial diffusion. We are concerned with the case when the diffusivity can take unbounded values and the mortality trade-off depends only on the trait variable. Depending on the rate of increase of the penalization term, we obtain the rate of spreading of the population. We identify two regimes, an acceleration regime when the penalization is weak and a linear spreading regime when the penalization is strong. While the development of the model comes from biological principles, the bulk of the article is dedicated to the mathematical analysis of the model, which is very technical. The upper and lower bounds are proved via the Li-Yau estimates of the fundamental solution of the heat equation with potential on Riemannian manifolds and a moving ball technique, respectively, and the traveling waves by a Leray-Schauder fixed point argument. We evaluated natural mortality (M yr−1) estimation reliability for eastern Aleutian Islands male golden king crab (Lithodes aequispinus), an exploited stock, by comparing an integrated length-based assessment model approach and a likelihood method using tag release-recapture data. We used 1997, 2003, and 2006 tag release-recapture data to estimate the size transition matrix, M , fishing mortality, total selectivity, and retained selectivity and compared M likelihood profiles between both methods. Furthermore, we conducted simulations with varying initial survival and tag reporting rates to show that M estimation reliability declines as these rates decline. Restricted time-at-large, full initial survival, and complete reporting assumptions produce an M estimate closer to that of the integrated length-based assessment method. Because the reliability of the M estimate is sensitive to changes in these assumptions, future efforts should focus on maximizing the number of tagged crab (and hence recaptures), evaluating initial tag-induced mortality, and optimizing tagged crab recapture reporting rates. The reliance of fishery-dependent data and high tag reporting rates highlights the importance for maintaining a positive cooperation with fishers for efforts towards sustainable management. • Tagging data can be used to estimate plausible natural mortality (M) provided it is supported by independent methods. • Length-based tag-recapture model has similar structures as the integrated length-based assessment model. • For tagging data, restricted time-at-large, insignificant initial tagging mortality, and complete reporting assumptions produce M estimate closer to M of integrated length-based assessment model. • Large number of tagged crab releases with precautions taken to minimize initial tagging mortality and to maximize tag-recapture reporting is paramount for successful estimation of M. To inform public health efforts to prevent epilepsy-related deaths, we used the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER; Wonder.cdc.gov ) to examine any-listed epilepsy deaths for the period 2005–2014 by age groups (≤ 24, 25–44, 45–64, 65–84, ≥ 85 years), sex, and race/ethnicity (non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic African American, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, or American Indian/Alaska Native). Epilepsy deaths were defined by the International Classification of Diseases , Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes G40.0–G40.9. The total number of deaths per year with epilepsy as any listed cause ranged from 1760 in 2005 to 2962 in 2014. Epilepsy was listed as the underlying cause of death for about 54% of all deaths with any mention of epilepsy in 2005 and for 43% of such deaths in 2014. Age-adjusted epilepsy mortality rates (as any-listed cause of death) per 100,000 significantly increased from 0.58 in 2005 to 0.85 in 2014 (47% increase). In 2014, deaths among the non-Hispanic Black population (1.42 deaths per 100,000) were higher than among non-Hispanic White (0.86 deaths per 100,000) and Hispanic populations (0.70 deaths per 100,000). Males had a higher mortality rate than females (1.01 per 100,000 versus 0.74 per 100,000 in 2014), and those aged 85 years or older had the highest mortality among age groups. We aimed to determine the mortality rates of the main groups of frontline healthcare providers (HCPs) with COVID-19. Of the 147 frontline HCPs in England who died from COVID-19 between 25 March 2020 and 13 May 2020 for whom we had data, doctors accounted for 19.1% ( I n i = 28, including 10 GPs), nurses 42.9% ( I n i = 63), and other HCPs 38.1% ( I n i = 56).
