The observation and analysis of sediment transport in oceans is an important means for the protection of the marine environment, resource development, construction engineering, and element cycling. However, traditional methods of observing sediment transport are either limited by the range of the instruments used or their own observational attributes, such that they cannot be used to accurately detect and analyze the process of transport of marine sediment. A 3D sediment trap has been proposed to compensate for the shortcomings of the various monitoring tools in our team, but no mature method for the analytical inversion of the data obtained from this device has been developed to date. In this paper, we developed analytical methods to invert sediment transport processes using corrected capture efficiency, sample inversion, and transport flux analysis. Through an annular flume test, we measured the turbidity, pressure, and particle size of the water stream and substituted them into the proposed analytical equations, thus verifying the applicability of the analytical methods. We used the slice experiment of the time series of the sediment samples, to determine the validity of the sample inversion, and establish the relationship between the particle size and concentration of the captured samples. We performed restoration tests on the process of sediment transport to establish a set of methods of flux analysis based on the velocity and turbidity of flow. And finally corrected for capture efficiency by particle size. The combination of analytical methods and 3D sediment trap could provide technological support for investigating the evolution of the sea, ecological cycle, and marine engineering. Sediment color reflectance contains important information on paleoenvironmental changes. Such data are routinely measured on sediment cores from the Southern Ocean. Their usefulness, however, is undervalued. Here for the first time, color reflectance of an ~520‐kyr sediment core retrieved off Prydz Bay (East Antarctica) was intensively investigated to correlate sediment color changes to changes in sediment compositions. Total carbon, total organic carbon, X‐ray fluorescence‐derived Fe/Ti and Br/Ti ratios, water content and mineral composition of sediment from this core, and color reflectance of another two sediment cores retrieved nearby were analyzed in this study. The raw reflectance data were transformed into their first‐order derivatives and subjected to factor analysis algorithms. A four‐factor model was selected to unmix the data set, explaining >80% of the total data variance. Its robustness is supported by similar factor analysis results from the other two cores. The four factors represent (from Factors 1–4) pulses of sedimentary Mn enrichment and Fe3+/Fe2+ changes in clay minerals, relative content changes of colorless components, hematite and goethite, and water, respectively. Scores of Factor 1 show high spikes at glacial terminations, recording enhanced deglacial ventilation in the abyssal Southern Ocean. Scores of Factor 2 mainly reflect biogenic components and chlorite but are further complicated by refractory terrigenous organic carbon and Mn‐oxides/‐hydroxides. Higher Scores of Factor 3 occur mainly at peak interglacial intervals, associated with enhanced transport of sediment of Antarctic origin by oceanic currents. Water content (Factor 4) in the core sediment was significantly influenced by opal content and sediment grain size compositions. The source and transport process of sediments are of great concern in marine sedimentology. In this study, naturally occurring radionuclides (238U, 226Ra, 228Ra, and 40K) in surface sediments and sediment cores were comprehensively analysed using high-purity germanium (HPGe) γ spectrometry in order to explore radionuclide fingerprints as novel proxies for tracking the source and transport pathway of sediments in the Beibu Gulf. We found that the radioactivity level of sediments in the Beibu Gulf was lower than that in other Chinese seas, following a comprehensive compilation and comparison of radioactivity in the region, indicating the Beibu Gulf is a high-quality marine environment. An interesting "butterfly pattern" was exhibited in the horizontal distribution of radionuclides in surface sediments from the Beibu Gulf, mainly attributable to the controlling factors of the non-linear negative regulation of sediment grain size and positive role of total organic carbon in sediment. Furthermore, the vertical distribution of radionuclides in sediment cores was affected by the redox state and a physical/biological disturbance, which were demonstrated by the simultaneous analysis of redox-sensitive element Mn and 210Pb, respectively. Additionally, the 226Ra 238U endmember model and 232Th 238U endmember model were proposed for quantifying local input (85%) and trans-region input (15%) of marine sediments in the Beibu Gulf in the context of the Guangdong-Qiongzhou Strait-Guangxi framework. We inferred that the Beibu Gulf was at risk of contamination by artificial radionuclides derived from nearby Guangdong Province, which has the highest number of nuclear power plants in China, through a trans-region input by ocean currents. Our study not only provided spatiotemporal distributions of radionuclides in the Beibu Gulf and their controlling factors (sediment grain size, total organic carbon, redox state, physical/biological disturbance, and ocean currents) but also indicated the radionuclide fingerprints (226Ra/238U and 232Th/238U) as potential geochemical proxies for quantifying the distinct sources of radionuclides and other associated chemicals (e.g., heavy metals, organic pollutants) in sediments.
