Forkhead box (FOX) proteins are a wing-like helix family of transcription factors in the DNA-binding region. By mediating the activation and inhibition of transcription and interactions with all kinds of transcriptional co-regulators (MuvB complexes, STAT3, β-catenin, etc.), they play significant roles in carbohydrate and fat metabolism, biological aging and immune regulation, development, and diseases in mammals. Recent studies have focused on translating these essential findings into clinical applications in order to improve quality of life, investigating areas such as diabetes, inflammation, and pulmonary fibrosis, and increase human lifespan. Early studies have shown that forkhead box M1 (FOXM1) functions as a key gene in pathological processes in multiple diseases by regulating genes related to proliferation, the cell cycle, migration, and apoptosis and genes related to diagnosis, therapy, and injury repair. Although FOXM1 has long been studied in relation to human diseases, its role needs to be elaborated on. FOXM1 expression is involved in the development or repair of multiple diseases, including pulmonary fibrosis, pneumonia, diabetes, liver injury repair, adrenal lesions, vascular diseases, brain diseases, arthritis, myasthenia gravis, and psoriasis. The complex mechanisms involve multiple signaling pathways, such as WNT/β-catenin, STAT3/FOXM1/GLUT1, c-Myc/FOXM1, FOXM1/SIRT4/NF-κB, and FOXM1/SEMA3C/NRP2/Hedgehog. This paper reviews the key roles and functions of FOXM1 in kidney, vascular, lung, brain, bone, heart, skin, and blood vessel diseases to elucidate the role of FOXM1 in the development and progression of human non-malignant diseases and makes suggestions for further research. This paper will focus on analyzing the argument with appealing to nature against synthetic biology and provide a counter-argument against it through demonstrating the ambiguity of the concept of nature, denying the existence of a morally significant line between natural and non/unnatural, and disproving the allegations against synthetic biology raised by the argument appealing to nature. The paper consists of two parts following a brief introduction. The first part will describe the argument appealing to nature against synthetic biology, and identify the deficiencies of the argument per se, e.g., the ambiguity of the concept ‘nature’; and the problems in the morally significant line between the natural and the non/unnatural. The second part will discuss the allegations to synthetic biology stemming from this argument, e.g., committing metaphysical and ethical mistakes, and doing possible harms to the environment.

It is very complicated to give correct answer to the question "How to define human life?" Nowadays dilemmas consider the respect of human life from the birth to death involve not just biology but also other sciences like philosophy, theology, sociology, psychology, law and politics. These sciences evaluate the topic from different points of view. Integration of all of these perspectives could result with a proper definition. The principal purpose of this paper is to try to determine when a human individual begins. If this proves to be too difficult, we might have to settle for a specific stage in the reproductive process before which it would be impossible to say with any plausibility that a human individual exists. It is necessary to return the moral dimension of observation to the science of life. The point is to reconcile the universal ethical principles concerning the absolute value of life with the everyday challenges and dilemmas. Recovery from serious mental illness (SMI) is recognized as involving the development of a coherent and compassionate understanding of oneself and one's place in the world. For many reasons this may be an unusually daunting task in a maximum security prison, particularly in solitary confinement. For the incarcerated person who experiences psychosis and other severe emotional difficulties, to the extent that SMI is an experience of fragmentation, loss of agency, and loss of a sense of belonging to the human community, these things are amplified by the very experience of incarceration. In this paper we explored the general and specific tasks that psychotherapy in these settings should address if promoting subjective recovery is to be a key objective. After reviewing emerging literature on metacognition as a set of processes which underlie recovery from SMI, we have suggested that psychotherapy in highly restrictive correctional settings may promote subjective recovery to the extent that, sensitive to persons' metacognitive capacities, psychotherapy helps persons with SMI to form more coherent accounts of their challenges and possibilities and decide how to respond to them. We then suggested that in these types of forensic settings there may be very specific tasks for psychotherapists. These include establishing psychotherapy as a space in which meaning can jointly be made of the person's experience within prison, including their experiences and responses to the challenges of prison, as something that falls along the continuum of what can be made sense of within the context of their larger life. Love is the core of human experience and central to our meaning in life and wellbeing, yet it is also a complex concept full of ambiguity and contradiction. The main purpose of this paper is fourfold: Firstly, we want to clarify questions such as 'What is the meaning of love?' and 'Why is meaning of love so important to us?' Secondly, we want to explain why love is both suffering and essential for our happiness and mental health. Thirdly, we identify the major types of love and clarify which types are constructive and which are destructive. We also identify the key dimensions of true love. Finally, we emphasise that love does not always mean happiness; rather, it is meant to be a school to teach us important lessons and to make us complete. Therefore, we need to embrace suffering and at the same time cultivate the constructive types of love to improve our mental health and to make the world a more compassionate place. This paper addresses the claim that the social orders of Western civilization operate on the basis of the law's presumed sovereignty over life. I demonstrate how the respective works of Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben and French phenomenologist Michel Henry are joined in their concern over this issue, and in their shared belief that life can be made sovereign over the law through a communal life based upon habit. At the same time, I argue that their respective conceptions of this communal life are flawed, and that they would benefit from being brought into a productive dialogue with one another. More specifically, I show that Henry's account of a Christian communal life based upon the habitual practice of love moves at least some way toward addressing Agamben's account of a coming community that is decidedly abstract and lacking in a substantial ethic. However, I maintain that Henry's own account of this community is founded upon a problematic conception of potentiality that would benefit from Agamben's study of the matter. By bringing these two figures together and drawing out the lessons that can be learnt from each of them, this work provides a more concrete and substantial account of how a coming Christian community can play a role in making life sovereign over the force of the law. The life of a nurse since the Covid-19 pandemic is characterized by high rates of anxiety, depression, and burnout, leading national organizations to declare the nursing shortage a national emergency. Solutions cite work-life balance, but this term has no clear guiding definition. Experts in the organizational psychology and personal development literature suggest other ways to reconsider this dilemma, that of integration. In this paper the concept of integration is proposed to focus on relationships with family and friends, work, and oneself. The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses 'standards for a healthy work environment are used to frame the benefits of an integrated life. Strategies to achieve an integrated life, one with meaning and purpose, are described to create more happiness and joy and to begin to mitigate the nursing shortage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores the conceptualization of freedom in the memoir of the Iranian-American journalist and media activist, Masih Alinejad. It examines The Wind in My Hair: My fight for Freedum in Modem Iran (2018) with respect to Alinejad's activism in the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement in Iran. The paper utilizes a critical framework drawn from feminist critiques of neoliberal feminism and Derridean hospitality to focus on Alinejad's repetition of the narratives of model minority and American exceptionalism. These neoliheral narratives have the potential to turn both Iran and the United States into inhospitable places for women. The paper concludes that an intersectional examination of Alinajad' s neoliberal approach to the experiences of women in both the United States and Iran will demonstrate that it does not coincide with the demands of "Woman, Life, freedom". The purpose of this publication is to present the role of prayer in the life and pastoral work of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński. We used elements of the biographical method to discuss the main features of his personality and show that he constantly strove for holiness as he believed that the future of the world depends on saints. He respected the past and attributed great value to culture, tradition and liturgy. Being an unyielding defender of Poland and the Church in the times of the communist regime, he was a man of heroic prayer. In his view, the ideals of life are based on harmony between God and the people. Therefore, this paper recalls the figure of the Primate who, through his life witness, believed, dreamed, longed and worked to restore balance in Polish society shattered by opposing political or ideological trends. In discussing prayer, we recall the Cardinal's attitude toward acts of personal devotion, the rosary, breviary prayer and the daily Eucharist. We also point out his devotion to the liturgical year, the Sunday Eucharistic celebration and his service to Mary, mother of God. Characterising the main fields of the Primate's pastoral activities, we distinguish individual periods associated with his ministry. 'Away Days' in the National Health Service are a protected time away from usual tasks where a team comes together. They can have different intentions, including connecting team members and establishing team bonds. This paper describes using a Narrative Therapy approach called "The Journey of Life" to run away days. It involves thinking about the journey a team has been on and what has helped them along the way. It invites a team to think about their future directions and how they use skills they have learned when they face obstacles in the road ahead. The importance of preparing for away days, including establishing intentions, creating a feeling of safety and thinking about the role and positioning we adopt as team members ourselves is highlighted. In this paper, I investigate backward-looking accounts of death's badness. I begin by reviewing deprivationism—the standard, forward-looking account of death's badness. On deprivationism, death is bad for its victims when it deprives them of a good future. This account famously faces two problems—Lucretius's symmetry problem and the preemption problem. This motivates turning to backward-looking accounts of death's badness on which death is bad for its victim (in a respect) when it involves a decline from a good life. I distinguish three different backward-looking accounts of death's badness in terms of decline, and I argue for the attractiveness of one in particular. This paper provides an overview and demonstration of emerging float-based methods for quantifying gross primary production (GPP) and net community production (NCP) using Biogeochemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) float data. Recent publications have described GPP methods that are based on the detection of diurnal oscillations in upper-ocean oxygen or particulate organic carbon concentrations using single profilers or a composite of BGC-Argo floats. NCP methods rely on budget calculations to partition observed tracer variations into physical or biological processes occurring over timescales greater than 1 d. Presently, multi-year NCP time series are feasible at near-weekly resolution, using consecutive or simultaneous float deployments at local scales. Results, however, are sensitive to the choice of tracer used in the budget calculations and uncertainties in the budget parameterizations employed across different NCP approaches. Decadal, basin-wide GPP calculations are currently achievable using data compiled from the entire BGC-Argo array, but finer spatial and temporal resolution requires more float deployments to construct diurnal tracer curves. A projected, global BGC-Argo array of 1000 floats should be sufficient to attain annual GPP estimates at 10∘ latitudinal resolution if floats profile at off-integer intervals (e.g., 5.2 or 10.2 d). Addressing the current limitations of float-based methods should enable enhanced spatial and temporal coverage of marine GPP and NCP measurements, facilitating global-scale determinations of the carbon export potential, training of satellite primary production algorithms, and evaluations of biogeochemical numerical models. This paper aims to facilitate broader uptake of float GPP and NCP methods, as singular or combined tools, by the oceanographic community and to promote their continued development.

People gain utility from occupying a higher ranked position in the income distribution of the reference group. This paper investigates whether these gains depend on an individual's set of personality and affective traits. Using the 2000 to 2013 waves of the German Socio‐economic Panel dataset (SOEP), a subjective question on Life Satisfaction, and three different measures of personal and affective traits, we find significant and robust differences across groups and conclude that traits determine the relationship between rank and life satisfaction. The heterogeneity on the importance of income comparisons is relevant, for example, when building economic models, predicting individuals' behavior, or making welfare judgments. Equipment parallel simulation is an emerging simulation technology in recent years, and equipment remaining useful life (RUL) prediction oriented parallel simulation is an important branch of parallel simulation. An important concept in equipment parallel simulation is the model evolution driven by real-time data, including model selection and model parameter evolution. The current research on equipment RUL prediction oriented parallel simulation mainly focuses on a single continuous degradation mode, such as linear degradation and nonlinear degradation. Under this degradation condition, the model parameter evolution methods in parallel simulation can effectively predict equipment RUL. However, in practice, most of the equipment degradation processes exhibit a mixture of continuous degradation and discrete shock. So this requires adaptive selection of simulation models based on real-time degradation data. In this paper, the hybrid degradation equipment RUL prediction oriented parallel simulation considering model soft switch is studied. Firstly, under the modeling framework of the state space model (SSM), two kinds of degradation simulation models are established using the Wiener process and Poisson effect. Driven by the real-time degradation data, the model probability is calculated by using the forward interactive multiple model filtering algorithm to realize the model soft switch and data assimilation. On the basis of model soft switch, the expectation maximization algorithm is utilized to achieve model parameter evolution. Through the iteration between model soft switch and model parameter evolution, the simulation fidelity can be effectively improved and the actual equipment degradation state is continuously approached. According to the full probability theorem and the concept of first hitting time, the simulated degradation state distribution is integrated into the inverse Gaussian distribution. Then the analytical expression of the RUL probability density function is obtained to achieve RUL real-time prediction. Finally, a case study was conducted by using a bearing degradation data. The results show that the parallel simulation can effectively model the hybrid degradation process of the bearing. Compared with the single-model method that only considers the model parameter evolution, the RUL obtained by the method proposed in this paper has higher prediction accuracy and smaller uncertainty. This paper explores the relational geographies of laughter, life and death within nursing care homes. Death is often seen as the ultimate Other: sitting in opposition to life, at the limits of what is knowable, and therefore as something that is impossible to fully engage with. In nursing care homes, however, death remains a relatively banal element of ordinary life, and like many other aspects of nursing care home life, is often accompanied by bursts of laughter. Where most scholars position the relation between laughter and death in terms of coping – laughter as a means of pushing away emotions during encounters with death – this paper offers an alternative and more affirmative account of laughter and death. Through drawing on seven months of ethnographic engagement with two nursing care homes in the UK, the paper argues that laughter occurs, not as a means of coping, but rather as a "carrying on": a taking of our emotions forward with us and folding them into our sense of self rather than pushing them away. Further to this, I argue that this mode of enfolding affectivities is suggestive of a wider form of pragmatic micropolitics in care homes, whereby carers often work towards an "as well as possible" rather than grand, idealistic political visions. For the full and complete enjoyment of life, it is necessary to keep a check on its quality. Work life accounts for an average of one-third of adult life. An analysis, thus, on the quality of work life is essential to ensure happiness and contentment at the workplace. A good work life encourages job satisfaction among the employees, which results in several benefits for the employer company, namely a boost in productivity and job loyalty, amid others. The present paper takes a look at the significance of assessing the quality of work life among employees, and its correlation with job satisfaction between them. The paper analyses this relationship in the field of Library and Information Science professionals in India, and determines factors that enable or accentuate the connection between them, namely job assignment, financial rewards and benefits, healthy working conditions and work allocation. It supports the relationship between quality of work life and job satisfaction level through findings from a survey conducted between the professionals belonging to the field of Library and Information sciences. Loneliness is an important health issue facing older people due to its association with poor quality of life and poor health outcomes. This paper aimed to clarify key issues around loneliness among older adults and draw attention to innovative programs and the translation of emerging research into practice. Loneliness is a mismatch between a person's actual and desired social connections, experienced as negative emotions. Older adults are vulnerable to loneliness because of changes associated with ageing. As such, identifying as older is often seen as a burden, negatively impacting self‐esteem, sense of purpose and relevance, culminating in loneliness. Interventions combatting loneliness can target individuals, relationships, communities or societies. We advocate for an intersectoral approach to support healthy ageing and reduce loneliness. This will require further research to evaluate new approaches with loneliness as the primary outcome, and additional funding to translate evidence into an integrated multi‐level approach to addressing loneliness. To say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder means that beauty is largely subjective so varies from person to person. While the subjectivity view is commonly held, there is also an objectivity view that seeks to measure beauty or aesthetics in some quantitative manners. Christopher Alexander has long discovered that beauty or coherence highly correlates to the number of subsymmetries or substructures and demonstrated that there is a shared notion of beauty--structural beauty--among people and even different peoples, regardless of their faiths, cultures, and ethnicities. This notion of structural beauty arises directly out of living structure or wholeness, a physical and mathematical structure that underlies all space and matter. Based on the concept of living structure, this paper develops an approach for computing the structural beauty or life of an image (L) based on the number of automatically derived substructures (S) and their inherent hierarchy (H). To verify this approach, we conducted a series of case studies applied to eight pairs of images including Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa and Jackson Pollock's Blue Poles. We discovered among others that Blue Poles is more structurally beautiful than the Mona Lisa, and traditional buildings are in general more structurally beautiful than their modernist counterparts. This finding implies that goodness of things or images is largely a matter of fact rather than an opinion or personal preference as conventionally conceived. The research on structural beauty has deep implications on many disciplines, where beauty or aesthetics is a major concern such as image understanding and computer vision, architecture and urban design, humanities and arts, neurophysiology, and psychology. There is ample research on how metaphors of life vary both cross-culturally and within culture, with age emerging as possibly the most significant variable with regard to the latter dimension. However, no representative research has yet been carried on whether variation can also occur across time. Our paper attempts to fill this gap in the literature by exploring whether a major crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, can induce variation in how life is metaphorically conceptualized throughout society. By drawing on the results of a nationwide, representative survey on the metaphorical preferences for life among Hungarian adults carried out during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, we hypothesized that the pandemic would induce a revolutionary change (in the sense of the change being swift, as opposed to gradual) in how Hungarian adults metaphorically conceptualize life, as compared to the metaphorical preferences of the pre-COVID-19 era. We expected this variation to manifest itself in the emergence of novel metaphorical source domains and a realignment in metaphorical preferences. Our results, however, indicate that novel conceptualizations emerged only as one-off metaphors; Hungarians mostly rely on a stock collection of life metaphors even in times of crises, with changes happening mostly in the form of shifts in metaphorical preferences. Our study also found that the choice of preference of the source domains showed less alterations among older adults – implying that the older we get, the more resistant to change our metaphorical conceptualizations become, even under extreme conditions such as COVID-19. Time perspective (TP) offers a new understanding of human personality, postulating that there are individual differences in how our mind assigns our experiences to different time categories. This concept may shed new light on the role of personality traits in shaping vulnerability to the internalized stigma. In this paper we propose a novel approach to clarifying the underpinning of self-stigma by empirically exploring its links with TP. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 86 patients with ICD-10 diagnoses of paranoid schizophrenia to validate the predictive role of TP for self-stigma. We used the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI), Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness scale (ISMI) and Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS). We found significant positive correlations of self-stigma with Past-Negative, Future-Negative and Present-Fatalistic TP categories and negative correlation with the Future-Positive category. The hierarchical regression analyses revealed that two TP categories and Deviation from the Balanced Time Perspective (DBTP) are significant predictors of self-stigma over and above sociodemographic and clinical control variables. Conclusion. The results of the study confirm the hypothesis that TP opens new possibilities to understand proneness or resistance to self-stigmatization, and this may provide a basis for novel approaches to anti-self-stigma interventions. The thrust chamber's inner wall suffers high temperature and pressure differences from the coolant channel, which limits the life of the rocket engine. Life prediction of the thrust chamber really plays an important role in reusable launch vehicle propulsion systems. The Porowski beam model is widely used in the life prediction of reusable liquid rocket engine thrust chambers, which calculates the life caused by fatigue, creep, and thinning after each firing cycle. In order to analyze the life of the thrust chamber, a LOX/Kerosene rocket engine is investigated in this paper. The life analysis consists of pressure and temperature differences and structural parameters. Two kinds of inner wall materials were chosen for comparison in this research: OFHC copper and Narloy-Z alloy. In the era of positivism and anticlericalism of France's Belle Époque, scientist Alexis Carrel stood in stark contrast as one preoccupied with his faith and its relation to scientific scrutiny. Despite his early adult agnosticism, he sought proof of the divine and chose verification of the miraculous cures reported from the shrine at Lourdes, France. It so happened that on his first visit there, he encountered a truly remarkable "cure" of a young woman in the terminal stages of tubercular peritonitis. On a return visit, for the second time, he witnessed the restoration of sight to a blind child. Throughout the rest of his life, Carrel was struck by the proximity of the supernatural to corporeal interactions. He ultimately found a place for his faith as a parallel pathway and not in juxtaposition to the scientific. This paper chronicles Carrel's evolution of belief and reconciliation of faith and science. What is a viable life? This paper addresses this question with reference to viability as a concept and young people's social action across the world. The notion of viability offers a framework for examining how young people 'think across' different domains of life – such as education, work, environment, politics and cultural practice – and develop ecosystems of practice that connect these domains together. Venous leg ulcer is a recognized condition, affecting people globally. Ulcers mainly affect the elderly and recurrences are not uncommon. There is knowledge about life with venous leg ulcers, but the situation after healing is unexplored. This paper explores and describes meanings of experiences of daily life after healing of a hard-to-heal venous leg ulcer. Lived experiences of 15 individuals with healed hard-to-heal venous leg ulcers generated data for this study. Interviews were recorded for analysis using a reflective lifeworld research approach. An essence emerged, further described by its constituents. Memories of a difficult time with leg ulcer were ever present, in a way becoming part of the self. A striving for control in daily life entailed a struggle to do what was best for the own body. After healing, a new normal emerged in daily life, a reality that encompassed the risk for a new ulcer. The body had changed physically, with marks alongside those from ageing, in a life that still went on. For those who had healed from a venous leg ulcer, life had changed. For decades predictors of alcohol use disorder (AUD) relapse have been studied, and around 40 different clinical and demographic relapse determinants have been identified. This paper aims to investigate the relationship of two of these AUD relapse factors, namely craving and meaning in life (MiL). We hypothesized that greater meaning in life would be associated with lower cravings and lower relapse rates. An AUD subsample of 81 patients within a clinical population that participated in ongoing exploratory research on religious/spiritual factors related to substance use disorders was followed up to 1 year. Craving (as measured with the Penn Alcohol Craving Scale) and meaning in life (as measured with the Meaning in Life Questionnaire- presence subscale) measures were assessed at baseline and relapse was assessed at 6- and 12-month follow up. Main effects and the interaction between craving and meaning in life in predicting alcohol relapse (with relapse defined as 'any alcohol use' and ≥ 3 consecutive days of drinking) were calculated/subject of analyses. We also investigated the relationship between relapse and alcohol dependence severity as measured with the Leeds Dependence Questionnaire. Baseline craving and dependence severity were related to relapse, but there were no associations between meaning in life and levels of craving or alcohol relapse. This paper challenges the frequent demonisation of entropy in discourses which attempt to draw a “naturalised” axiology from thermodynamics, information theory, and related sciences. Such discourses include Wiener’s cybernetics, Stiegler’s negathropology, and Floridi’s information ethics, in each of which entropy designates the evil which must be fought in the name of life, information, or some other notion of “the good.” The perspective the paper develops is Nietzschean. Nietzsche himself rejected the consequences of the Second Law, but I wish to argue that it is possible to affirm entropy, for Nietzschean reasons. First, the paper argues that the reason Nietzsche rejected the Second Law is that it provides consolation for the pessimist (an argument made by von Hartmann). Eternal return should be affirmed because it is the more difficult position, and so provides the ultimate existential test. However, metaphysical and existential reasons must give way to the more recent scientific evidence, especially the dating of the universe, which undermines Nietzsche’s argument against heat death. While this is alone sufficient reason to affirm entropy, the position is supported by two further classes of reasons. First, the oppositions which whave supported the traditional ascription of values to negentropy and entropy can be challenged; and 2) entropy can be seen as consonant with the characteristics of existence which Nietzsche sought to affirm, especially becoming.

Research and policymaking on positive mental health and well-being have increased within the last decade, partly fueled by decreasing levels of well-being in the general population and among at-risk groups. However, measurement of well-being often takes place in the absence of reflection on the underlying theoretical conceptualization of well-being. This disguises the fact that different rating scales of well-being often measure very different phenomena because rating scales are based on different philosophical assumptions, which represent radically different foundational views about the nature of well-being. The aim of this paper is to examine the philosophical foundation of the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) in order to clarify the underlying normative commitments and the psychometric compromises involved in the translation of theory into practice. SWLS is widely used by psychologists, public health professionals, economists, and is popular in national and international surveys of well-being. This paper introduces the philosophical theory of life satisfaction and explores how three central discussions within life satisfaction theory are reflected in the construction of the SWLS; (1) Whether we should be equally satisfied with our past, present and future, (2) Whether we should be satisfied with all the various domains of our lives, and (3) How to avoid the trap of "false consciousness", i.e. that people fail to recognize the injustice or misfortune of their lives. In the end, life satisfaction theory is contrasted with affective foundational theories of well-being, to explore the magnitude and limits of SWLS as a rating scale based on life satisfaction theory.
