Digital editions, text collections, and lexical resources each have their own tradition in the (digital) humanities and at the same time, the data domains also share common methods and practices of indexing, modeling, and analysis. The Text+ consortium in the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI)is dedicated to the handling of research data in the three aforementioned research domains and is exploring methods and practices of cross-domain use of datasets and the resulting collaboration between research fields. The poster shows the connections between the three data domains in Text+ using a concrete example: the edition of letters by the German writer Jean Paul (Jean Paul Friedrich Richter, 1763–1825) of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW). The poster was accepted and presented at the DH2023 conference in Graz.

[EN] This BA Project presents the inventory, conservation strategy and preventive conservation recommendations of the epistles of Don Simón de Rojas Clemente y Rubio, belonging to the Titaguas City Council, Valencia. Don Simón de Rojas, Deputy in the Cortes during the Liberal Triennium between 1820 and 1823, a distinguished botanist and orientalist of the locality, was a notable figure in the society with a relevant written legacy, among which the present case study is found: epistolary documents from between 1800 and 1807, sent by D. Simón to his father and other relatives from London, Madrid, the English Channel, Paris or Cádiz living in Titaguas. These documents are handwritten and present a quite similar condition. The inventory study and preventive conservation proposal aims to value and transmit the documentary legacy, delving into the figure of D. Simón de Rojas, analyzing the historical context of the epistles, in addition to systematically registering them, carrying out a material and conservation study. Based on the evaluation of the condition of the archive in which they are currently stored, this TFG proposes the conservation strategy of a given letter and proposes the preventive conservation recommendations for their preservation. The work is especially aimed to meet the Sustainable Development objectives -ODS-, through the Service Learning -ApS- methodology, transferring the results of the work to society, so that they can be useful to face the challenges of preserving our heritage.

A previous paper published in this journal proposed a model for evaluating the location of fingermarks on two-dimensional items (de Ronde, van Aken, de Puit and de Poot (2019)). In this paper, we apply the proposed model to a dataset consisting of letters to test whether the activity of writing a letter can be distinguished from the alternative activity of reading a letter based on the location of the fingermarks on the letters. An experiment was conducted in which participants were asked to read a letter and write a letter as separate activities on A4- and A5-sized papers. The fingermarks on the letters were visualized, and the resulting images were transformed into grid representations. A binary classification model was used to classify the letters into the activities of reading and writing based on the location of the fingermarks in the grid representations. Furthermore, the limitations of the model were studied by testing the influence of the length of the letter, the right- or left-handedness of the donor and the size of the paper with an additional activity of folding the paper. The results show that the model can predict the activities of reading or writing a letter based on the fingermark locations on A4-sized letters of right-handed donors with 98 % accuracy. Additionally, the length of the written letter and the handedness of the donor did not influence the performance of the classification model. Changing the size of the letters and adding an activity of folding the paper after writing on it decreased the model's accuracy. Expanding the training set with part of this new set had a positive influence on the model's accuracy. The results demonstrate that the model proposed by de Ronde, van Aken, de Puit and de Poot (2019) can indeed be applied to other two-dimensional items on which the disputed activities would be expected to lead to different fingermark locations. Moreover, we show that the location of fingermarks on letters provides valuable information about the activity that is carried out. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
