Digital Twin is becoming an increasingly powerful resource in the field of building production, replacing traditional processes in the Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operations sector. This study is concerned with the development of a DT, enabled by Building Information Modeling, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the Internet of Things to implement space management strategies. It proposes an application case for the Lazio Region headquarters, which has partly adopted smart working typology post-COVID-19. The aim is to create an accurate digital replica of the building based on BIM, integrated with real-time data. This will help to improve the use of space, the management of resources, and the quality of services provided to the community. It also improves energy efficiency, reducing consumption by 530.40 MWh per year and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 641.32 tons of CO2 per year. The research proposes a holistic framework for the implementation of innovative solutions in the context of public infrastructure space management through the use of digital technology, facilitating the promotion of efficiency and sustainability in decision-making and operational processes through the application of a digital methodology. While digital twins (DTs) have recently gained prominence as a viable option for creating reliable asset representations, many existing frameworks and architectures in the literature involve the integration of different technologies and paradigms, including the Internet of Things (IoTs), data modeling, and machine learning (ML). This complexity requires the orchestration of these different technologies, often resulting in subsystems and composition frameworks that are difficult to seamlessly align. In this paper, we present a scalable compositional framework designed for the development of a DT-based production management system (PMS) with advanced production monitoring capabilities. The conducted approach used to design the compositional framework utilizes the Factory Design and Improvement (FDI) methodology. This study uses a wind turbine case study as a subdomain of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) to showcase an architecture for implementing a distributed digital twin in which all important aspects of a predictive maintenance solution in a DT use a fog computing paradigm, and the typical predictive maintenance DT is improved to offer better asset utilization and management through real-time condition monitoring, predictive analytics, and health management of selected components of wind turbines in a wind farm. Digital twin (DT) is a technology that sits at the intersection of Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, and Software Engineering to provide a suitable tool for replicating physical objects in the digital space. This can facilitate the implementation of asset management in manufacturing systems through predictive maintenance solutions leveraged by machine learning (ML). With DTs, a solution architecture can easily use data and software to implement asset management solutions such as condition monitoring and predictive maintenance using acquired sensor data from physical objects and computing capabilities in the digital space. While DT offers a good solution, it is an emerging technology that could be improved with better standards, architectural framework, and implementation methodologies. Researchers in both academia and industry have showcased DT implementations with different levels of success. However, DTs remain limited in standards and architectures that offer efficient predictive maintenance solutions with real-time sensor data and intelligent DT capabilities. Featured Application: The paper highlights the steps taken in checking the required data quality (both real and synthetic) before it is used for the development of services in the context of IIoT-enabled smart infrastructure systems. A case study of a scaled-down version of a water distribution system will be presented in detail and data from healthy and faulty conditions will be used to demonstrate the details of the data qualification process and the impact on various health assessment techniques meant to support fault detection and isolation of single and multi-component degradation scenarios. The paper also proposes an IIoT architecture for the instantiation of measurement system analysis. In the development of analytics for PHM applications, a lot of emphasis has been placed on data transformation for optimal model development without enough consideration for the repeatability of the measurement systems producing the data. This paper explores the relationship between data quality, defined as the measurement system analysis (MSA) process, and the performance of fault detection and isolation (FDI) algorithms within smart infrastructure systems. This research employs a comprehensive methodology, starting with an MSA process for data-quality evaluation and leading to the development and evaluation of fault detection and isolation (FDI) algorithms. During the MSA phase, the repeatability of a water distribution system's measurement system is examined to characterise variations within the system. A data-quality process is defined to gauge data quality. Synthetic data are introduced with varying data-quality levels to investigate their impact on FDI algorithm development. Key findings reveal the complex relationship between data quality and FDI algorithm performance. Synthetic data, even with lower quality, can improve the performance of statistical process control (SPC) models, whereas data-driven approaches benefit from high-quality datasets. The study underscores the importance of customising FDI algorithms based on data quality. A framework for instantiating the MSA process for IIoT applications is also suggested. By bridging data-quality assessment with data-driven FDI, this research contributes to the design of digital twins for IIoT-enabled smart infrastructure systems. Digital twins and the Internet of Things (IoT) have gained significant research attention in recent years due to their potential advantages in various domains, and vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are one such application. VANETs can provide a wide range of services for passengers and drivers, including safety, convenience, and information. The dynamic nature of these environments poses several challenges, including intermittent connectivity, quality of service (QoS), and heterogeneous applications. Combining intelligent technologies and software-defined networking (SDN) with VANETs (termed intelligent software-defined vehicular networks (iSDVNs)) meets these challenges. In this context, several types of research have been published, and we summarize their benefits and limitations. We also aim to survey stochastic modeling and performance analysis for iSDVNs and the uses of machine-learning algorithms through digital twin networks (DTNs), which are also part of iSDVNs. We first present a taxonomy of SDVN architectures based on their modes of operation. Next, we survey and classify the state-of-the-art iSDVN routing protocols, stochastic computations, and resource allocations. The evolution of SDN causes its complexity to increase, posing a significant challenge to efficient network management. Digital twins offer a promising solution to address these challenges. This paper explores the relationship between digital twins and SDN and also proposes a novel approach to improve network management in SDN environments by increasing digital twin capabilities. We analyze the pitfalls of these state-of-the-art iSDVN protocols and compare them using tables. In the era of digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI), the utilization of Metaverse technology has become increasingly crucial. As the world becomes more digitized, there is a pressing need to effectively transfer real-world assets into the digital realm and establish meaningful relationships between them. Battery management systems (BMSs) are critical to ensure the efficiency and safety of high-power battery energy storage systems (BESSs) in vehicular and stationary applications. Recently, the proliferation of battery big data and cloud computing advancements has led to the development of a new generation of BMSs, named Cloud BMS (CBMS), aiming to improve the performance and safety of BESSs. The CBMS is a cyber-physical system with connectivity between the physical BMS and a cloud-based virtual BMS, which is realized through a communication channel such as Internet of Things. Compared to the traditional BMS, the CBMS offers significantly higher computational resources, leveraging the implementation of advanced digital twin models and best-in-class algorithms in the BMS software, which will provide superior performances. However, as for any other CPS, the CBMS creates vulnerabilities against cyberattacks and if not properly secured, could end up damaging the BESS and/or causing dangerous, expensive, and life-threatening situations. Cybersecurity of the CBMSs has thus become a trending topic and several works have been published in this area in recent years. This paper conducts a scoping review to address different topics related to BMS cybersecurity. The CBMS architecture is presented, and the potential cyberattack surfaces are identified. Different possible attack scenarios, including attack points, attack types, and their impact at the component level (BMS and BESS) and system level (vehicle or grid), are discussed. In addition, the paper provides a review of potential countermeasures to protect the CBMS against cyberattacks. The paper also includes a review of the applicable standards and regulations that relate to this trending topic. Urbanisation is leading to a concentration of growing city populations that contribute significantly to economic growth, while becoming epicentres of waste generation, greenhouse gas emissions, and food consumption. Nutrient smart city circular economy is currently an understudied intersection of growing city populations of food consumers, nutrient recovery technologies, Internet of Things (IoT), and agriculture. Meanwhile, machine learning has exploded with popularity over the years, with many circular economy literatures examining its usefulness in its predictive qualities to support management, optimisation, and recovery of useful resources from organic waste. This review paper examines advancements in machine learning for macronutrient recovery in city organic waste systems for a circular economy. The use of ML will greatly improve the scalability, transparency, productivity and accuracy of nutrient: recovery technologies, logistics, dissemination, and reuse. ML can also be combined with hardware to automate tedious waste separation, recovery and agricultural tasks using drones, hydroponics and satellites. Meanwhile, crop yields, nutrient demand-supply efficiencies, food security, environmental soil monitoring, and prosumer involvement could all increase. In the area of industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), digital twins (DTs) are a powerful means for process improvement. In this paper the concept of a DT is explained and analysis possibilities throughout the life-cycle of a product and its production system are explored. The main part of this paper is focused on an approach to the analysis of manufacturing layouts and their parameters. The approach, which is based on a state of the art bottleneck detection method, allows an intelligent representation of the temporal process characteristics. The presented method is widely applicable for any type of manufacturing layout and time-span. The use of elementary heuristics leads to traceable results that can be used for further analysis or optimization. The results of this analysis method can be integrated in a DT and combined with machine learning and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI). Digital twin-enabled neural networks will develop innovative processes in feature selection and simulation. In addition, this methodology will have development in autonomous driving, natural language processing, healthcare, and many other fields. Recently sensors have been widely used for environment monitoring, and massive data has to be processed efficiently and effectively, which requires managed neural architectures for sustainable computing. The sustainable digital twin-empowered architectures create new biological evolution simulation algorithms and intelligent system architectures for supervised and unsupervised learning. The advent of Industry 4.0 has brought with it the integration of digital twin technology, which has enabled businesses to develop a virtual replica of their physical assets. This technology allows businesses to optimize their operations and improve their overall efficiency. However, the successful implementation of digital twin technology in Industry 4.0 heavily relies on the effective utilization of gateways. A significant challenge in gateway utilization is the fair allocation of resources, particularly in heterogeneous environments where gateways have different capabilities. Digital Twin is helping Industry 4.0 vision by connecting the authorized people to the exact data and processes to protect the data/assets from unauthorized access. It is accomplished by connecting sensing devices using a unique addressing system and transmitting their combined data to the Internet of Things (IoT) cloud. Massive volumes of heterogeneous data have resulted from the rapid growth of IoT applications and services. As a result, evaluation of data which affects the Digital Twin enabled industry is studied in this article which focuses on data traffic generated from different Industry 4.0 applications and protection of data along with the industry assets is looked by Digital Twin technology. IoT gateways are currently used to connect the devices from various technologies to the Digital Twins. In such networks, sudden increase in demand of IoT gateways will increase with the increase in IoT devices and the operational cost will also be increased. In the proposed system, low-cost specific gateways are proposed to minimize cost and maximize network performance for protecting assets of smart city through Digital Twin technology. In order to accomplish effective resource allocation in a Digital Twin based infrastructure, data transmission fairness at every gateway is accomplished in an IIoT network by considering link scheduling issues. To address these issues and provide fairness in heterogeneous networks with enhanced data transfer, two steps solution is implemented. The Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) technique is used in the initial step of traffic prediction to assess the minimal time of prior traffic conditions before being applied to estimate dynamic traffic. In the second step, effective link scheduling and selection are made for each wireless technology, taking into account predicted load, gateway distance, link capacity, and estimated time. More data is transmitted at maximum capacity as a result of improved data transfer fairness for all gateways and then the data is protected by Digital Twin technology. Simulated results show that our suggested strategy performs better than other approaches by obtaining maximum network throughput in Industry 4.0 to provide protective solutions using Digital Twin technology. A study of the behavior of NB-IoT wireless communication in an industrial indoor environment was conducted in this paper. With Wireless Insite software, a scenario in the industrial sector was simulated and modeled. Our research examined how this scenario or environment affected the communication parameters of NB-IoT's physical layer. In this context, throughput levels among terminals as well as between terminals and transceiver towers, the power received at signal destination points, signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) in the environment, and distances between terminals and transceivers are considered. These simulated results are also compared with the calculated or theoretical values of these parameters. The results show the effect of the industrial setting on wireless communication. As the scale of foundation pit projects of subway stations in Shenzhen becomes larger, and the construction constraints become more and more complex, there is an urgent need for intelligent monitoring and safety management of foundation pits. In this study, an integrated intelligent approach for monitoring and management of a deep foundation pit in a subway station was proposed and a case study based on the Waterlands Resort East Station Project of Shenzhen Metro Line 12 was used for validation. The present study first proposed the path of intelligent foundation pit engineering. Based on geotechnical survey and building information modeling, a three-dimensional transparent geological model of foundation pit was constructed. Multi-source sensing technologies were integrated, including micro electromechanical system sensing technology, Brillouin optical frequency domain analysis sensing technology, an unmanned aerial vehicle and machine vision for real-time high-precision wireless monitoring of the foundation pit. Moreover, machine learning models were developed for predicting key parameters of foundation pits. Finally, a digital twin integrated platform was developed for the management of the subway foundation pit in both construction and maintenance phases. Over the last few years rapid progress has been made in adopting well‐known process modeling techniques from chemicals to biologics manufacturing. The main challenge has been analytical methods as engineers need quantitative data for their workflow. Industrialization 4.0, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and machine learning activities up to big data analysis have taken their share in solving fundamental problems like component‐ or at least group‐specific evaluation of spectroscopic data. The benefits of technologies related to the Internet of Things (IoT), virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), digital twins, and so on, can be fully realized when associated devices are positioned intuitively. However, AR systems hosted within smartphones pose challenges where auxiliary hardware and computational configurations associated with precise positioning are concerned. To this effect, we propose a deep learning-based indoor measurement system that can determine positions using images collected via beacons designed as IoT terminals. The proposed system is broadly divided into a detection unit, an extraction unit, a positioning unit, and a management server. The beacons were detected using deep learning algorithms, from which the postures were extracted using a homography matrix, and position of the imaging device was determined in reference to the beacon's position. With the unique design of our system, in that it simultaneously performs posture and positioning estimations, high immersive AR can be achieved. Moreover, scalability of the positioning space is also guaranteed as multiple beacons can be monitored at once. The European Commission (EC) has launched the European Green Deal communication, setting out the path for a fundamental transformation of Europe. Key element in this policy is a fully sustainable food system outlined in the farm-to-fork strategy. Such strategy requires a systems approach in which all aspects related to the production and consumption of sufficient and healthy food are considered, including economic, environmental (climate, ecosystems) and social aspects. Here, we present the systems approach concept for food production, following the farm-to-fork principle as embraced by the EC, and elaborate on how digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) can solve the challenges that a sustainable food system imposes. We present a number of research and innovation challenges and illustrate these by some specific examples. It is concluded that AI and digitalisation show great potential to support the transition towards a sustainable food system. This development will impact the roles and interactions of the actors in the entire value chain from farmers to consumers. Our research work describes a team of human Digital Twins (DTs), each tracking fitness-related measurements describing an athlete's behavior in consecutive days (e.g. food income, activity, sleep). After collecting enough measurements, the DT firstly predicts the physical twin performance during training and, in case of non-optimal result, it suggests modifications in the athlete's behavior. The athlete's team is integrated into SmartFit, a software framework for supporting trainers and coaches in monitoring and manage athletes' fitness activity and results. Through IoT sensors embedded in wearable devices and applications for manual logging (e.g. mood, food income), SmartFit continuously captures measurements, initially treated as the dynamic data describing the current physical twins' status. Dynamic data allows adapting each DT's status and triggering the DT's predictions and suggestions. The analyzed measurements are stored as the historical data, further processed by the DT to update (increase) its knowledge and ability to provide reliable predictions. Results show that, thanks to the team of DTs, SmartFit computes trustable predictions of the physical twins' conditions and produces understandable suggestions which can be used by trainers to trigger optimization actions in the athletes' behavior. Though applied in the sport context, SmartFit can be easily adapted to other monitoring tasks.

Decoupling the physical world and providing standardized service interfaces is still challenging when developing Location Based Services (LBS). This lack also hinders the possibility of developing Intelligent services on top of LBS architectures. In this paper, we propose a multi-layer Digital Twin-based architecture that aims to enable the development of machine learning-based Intelligent LBS (I-LBS) that are able to adapt, evolve, and perform Continual Learning (CL). The platform uses Digital Twins to ensure physical abstraction and provide cyber–physical knowledge to the I-LBSs, which is defined as an execution graph of operation modules. Finally, we simulated a use-case for this platform in the complex scenario of Healthcare organization and management where the I-LBS classifies allowed/not allowed trajectories of users inside a real-existing hospital scenario depending on their role in the organization. The use case is implemented as a Deep Learning-based reconstruction task of high-resolution trajectories processed by the DT architecture that also deploys the I-LBS. The platform is evaluated in terms of physical complexity and computational time on the DT side and on both a traditional machine learning setting and a replay-based CL one for the intelligence side to demonstrate the flexibility and adaptability features introduced by the components for dynamic or unseen scenarios. Agriculture industry faces the challenge of increasing productivity by 50% from 2012 to 2050 while reducing water usage, given that it currently consumes 69% of the world's freshwater. To achieve this goal, smart technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digital Twins (DT), and Internet of Things (IoT) are being increasingly utilized. However, the use of DT in agriculture is still in its early stages. This study proposes a smart irrigation framework inspired by digital twins in an application domain. The irrigation framework's sensors and actuators are linked to their virtual counterparts to create a digital twin. The IoT platform collects, aggregates, and processes data to determine daily irrigation requirements, and the behavior of the irrigation system is simulated. The proposed framework has two main advantages: evaluating the behavior of the digital twin and IoT platform in the context of agriculture before integrating them into the field and comparing various irrigation methods with current farming methods. The current Industry 4.0 revolution promotes the use of cyber–physical systems to enhance manufacturing and other industrial processes via automation, real-time analysis, etc. Data communication between individual systems plays an important role in this revolution's success. As defined by researchers, Digital Twin is the digital representation of a physical system that enables predictive maintenance. Due to the increase in environmental pollution, battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs) are regarded as the urgent solution to internal combustion engines in the transportation business, despite obstacles such as safety concerns and range estimation. State of Health (SoH) and State of Charge (SoC) are two battery metrics that, when precisely anticipated, permit safer and longer battery use. Predicting these parameters online is computationally and financially expensive. Alternately, some of these factors could be predicted in the cloud rather than on the vehicle, hence cutting costs. Consequently, the EV business is one example where cloud-to-vehicle data connection saves total costs. A digital twin for an EV battery would aid in the estimate of battery parameters for predictive maintenance. This paper presents a Digital Twin paradigm for EV battery management in which SoH is predicted in the cloud and SoC is estimated on-vehicle. A continuous learning method is also proposed for forecasting SoH, whereas the Kalman filter is used to estimate SoC. The proposed framework predicts the SoH with a mean square error of 0.022. In an increasingly digital world, there are fast-paced developments in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Mining, Digital Twins, Cyber-Physical Systems and the Internet of Things. This paper reviews and discusses how these new emerging areas relate to the traditional domain of building performance simulation. It explores the boundaries between building simulation and these other fields in order to identify conceptual differences and similarities, strengths and limitations of each of these areas. The paper critiques common notions about these new domains and how they relate to building simulation, reviewing how the field of building performance may evolve and benefit from the new developments. The pipeline is one of the important carriers in the petroleum industry, but facing with the development bottlenecks of low efficiency, high cost and high decision risk. With machine learning and advanced sensor, new technological breakthroughs are being opening up for intelligent pipeline systems to benefit. Nowadays, the intelligent transformation of pipeline is still in the initial stage. To accelerate this process, this paper elaborates the research on intelligent pipeline systems from the perspective of the full life cycle of pipeline. The life cycle is divided into six stages, including exploration, feasibility study, design, construction, operation and scrap. In each stage, the related theoretical research and key technologies have been systematically reviewed. It is observed that full digital construction and operation is an inevitable trend. The Internet of Things, big data, and multi-objective optimization are critical technologies. Finally, some future directions are put forward to prompt a pipeline into intelligence. As Internet of Things (IoT) technologies enable greater communication between energy assets in smart cities, the operational coordination of various energy networks in a city or district becomes more viable. Suitable tools are needed that can harness advanced control and machine learning techniques to achieve environmental, economic and resilience objectives. In this paper, an energy management tool is presented that can offer optimal control, scheduling, forecasting and coordination services to energy assets across a district, enabling optimal decisions under user-defined objectives. The tool presented here can coordinate different sub-systems in a district to avoid the violation of high-level system constraints and is designed in a generic fashion to enable transferable use across different energy sectors. The work demonstrates the potential for a single open-source optimisation framework to be applied across multiple energy vectors, providing local government the opportunity to manage different assets in a coordinated fashion. This is shown through case studies that integrate low-carbon communal heating for social housing with electric vehicle charge-point management to achieve high-level system constraints and local government objectives in the borough of Greenwich, London.
