Men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV. Given that over 70% of MSM meet sexual partners via dating apps, such apps may be an effective platform for promoting HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use. We aimed to describe preferences among MSM for PrEP advertisements displayed on dating apps. We conducted individual in-depth interviews with 16 MSM recruited from a mobile sexual health unit in Boston, Massachusetts. Two focus groups were also held: one with mobile unit staff (N = 3) and one with mobile unit users (N = 3). Content analysis was used to identify themes related to advertisement content and integration with app use. Mean participant age was 28 (SD 6.8); 37% identified as White and 63% as Latinx. 21% of interviews were conducted in Spanish. Preferences were organized around four themes: (1) relevant and relatable advertisements, (2) expansion of target audiences to promote access, (3) concise and captivating advertisements, and (4) PrEP advertisements and services as options, not obligations. MSM are supportive of receiving information about PrEP on dating apps, but feel that existing advertisements require modification to better engage viewers. The HIV epidemics in Cambodia is concentrated in key populations (KPs). Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has been officially approved in the country since 2019. However, its use may still be controversial after a PrEP clinical trial was interrupted in Cambodia after being deemed unethical in 2004. In this context, it was necessary to evaluate PrEP acceptability and administration preferences of KPs in Cambodia, with a view to increasing roll-out and uptake. We conducted a qualitative study in 2022 comprising six focus groups and four semi-structured individual interviews with transgender women, men who have sex with men, male entertainment workers, venue-based female entertainment workers (FEW), street-based FEW, and PrEP users who participated in a PrEP pilot study that started in 2019. Overall, KPs positively perceived PrEP, with some reservations. They preferred daily, community-based PrEP to event-driven, hospital-based PrEP, and highlighted that injectable PrEP would be a potential option if it became available in Cambodia. We recommend (i) proposing different PrEP regimens and PrEP delivery-models to broaden PrEP acceptability and adherence in Cambodia (ii) increasing the number of community-based organisations and improving the services they offer, (iii) rolling out injectable PrEP when it becomes officially available, and (iv) improving PrEP side effects information. In the United States, the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has led to a substantial decrease in HIV prevalence and incidence. However, some populations, including young men who have sex with men (YMSM) of color, continue to be disproportionately impacted, highlighting the need for tailored interventions addressing barriers to adequate PrEP access. In collaboration with partner clinics, we recruited 19 PrEP clients and 19 PrEP providers (n = 35) to participate in hour-long in-depth interviews. Although client interviews explored personal experiences with stigma, barriers, and motivators to PrEP and information preferences, provider interviews explored providers' perceived stigma in their clinic, perceived barriers and motivators to meeting clients' PrEP needs, and rapport building with clients. Most participants were affiliated with one of the southern partner clinics. Clients and providers noted similar determinants to PrEP access, uptake, and adherence. Both recognized the impact of personal barriers such as routine adjustments and perception of need, as well as institutional barriers such as transportation and financial difficulties. Clients emphasized the role of the client–provider relationship as part of contributing to willingness to disclose information such as HIV status and sexual practices. Providers noted the importance of sexual health and LGBTQ+ topics in their training. Despite limited geographical scope and the sensitive nature of HIV-related topics, this study has several implications. PrEP clinics may benefit from hiring providers who share identities and experiences with YMSM clients of color and operating with a flexible schedule. Cisgender men are diagnosed with HIV at a rate four times greater than cisgender women, with 71% of infections attributed to male-male sexual contact. Despite expanding accessibility, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention is initiated by only 30% of people with PrEP indications. Five focus groups with 42 young men who have sex with men from New York and Alabama were conducted to identify key factors to PrEP initiation and persistence. Thirty focus group participants completed a survey on demographics, PrEP choices and health care attitudes. Findings suggest provider competency significantly influences PrEP use due to stigmatization in medical settings. Participants noted benefits of PrEP including HIV protection and sexual empowerment, yet barriers like cost and side effects were prevalent. Our findings outline barriers and facilitators to PrEP use among young men who have sex with men in two high priority settings that will inform PrEP care updates in participating clinics. To achieve stated targets in the United States of Ending the HIV Epidemic by 2030, it is necessary to decrease rates of pre-exposure prophylaxis use (PrEP) cessation. In particular, it is key to assess PrEP use and cannabis use frequency given the recent wave of cannabis decriminalization across the U.S., particularly among sexual minority men and gender diverse (SMMGD) individuals. We used data from the baseline visit of a national study of Black and Hispanic/Latino SMMGD. Among participants reporting any lifetime cannabis use, we further assessed the association between frequency of cannabis use in the past 3 months and: (1) self-reported PrEP use, (2) recency of last PrEP dose, and (3) HIV status using adjusted regression models. Compared to those who never used cannabis, odds of PrEP cessation were higher among those who used it once or twice (aOR 3.27; 95% CI 1.38, 7.78), those who used it monthly (aOR 3.41; 95% CI 1.06, 11.01), and those who used it weekly or more frequently (aOR 2.34; 95% CI 1.06, 5.16). Similarly, those reporting cannabis use 1–2 times in the past 3 months (aOR 0.11; 95% CI 0.02, 0.58) and those reporting weekly or more frequent use (aOR 0.14; 95% CI 0.03, 0.68) were each more likely to report more recent PrEP cessation. These results suggest that cannabis users in general may be a population at elevated risk of HIV diagnosis although more research regarding these findings is needed with nationally representative populations. Background: Men who have sex with men (MSM) is a key population for preventing HIV in China, yet pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is not widely accepted in this population. The objective of this manuscript was to assessed the barriers in the acknowledgement and uptake focusing the demand side. Methods: An online questionnaire survey was conducted from December 2018 to January 2019. All participants were required to scan two-dimensional code which was the online crowdsourcing survey platform to complete the electronic questionnaire anonymously. Results: Among 1915 MSM from thirty-four cities of China, 512 (26.7%) versus 1617 (84.4%) had an objective or subjective need of PrEP, respectively. One hundred and six (5.5%) reported affordability and only 23 (1.2%) had ever taken it. Age, living alone and occupation were associated with the objective needs. Age, income, sexual behavior were associated with actual usage. The participants who they had objective need to use PrEP are the population which we should focus on. Conclusion: A wide disconnect exists among the objective need, willingness, affordability and uptake of PrEP. Cost was the most prevalent barrier, accounting for 78.22% of individuals who needed and wished for PrEP but finally failed to receive it. Background: Access to prevention options, including HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), remains a public health priority for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM), especially in London. We describe PrEP use in a London community sample of MSM before the introduction of a national PrEP programme in October 2020.Methods: From June-August 2019, MSM aged ≥ 18 recruited from London commercial venues were asked to self-complete a sexual health questionnaire and provide an oral fluid sample for anonymous HIV antibody testing. Descriptive analyses of demographic characteristics, service engagement and outcomes, as well as sexual risk and prevention behaviours were examined in the survey population and in those reporting current PrEP use. We performed sequential, multivariate analyses examining current PrEP use in MSM of self-perceived HIV-negative/unknown status with identified PrEP-need defined as the report of condomless anal sex (CAS) in the last three months, or the report of CAS (in the last year) with an HIV-positive/unknown status partner not known to be on HIV treatment, in reflection of UK PrEP guidelines.Results: One thousand five hundred and thirty-fifth questionnaires were completed across 34 venues, where 1408 were analysed. One in five MSM of self-perceived HIV-negative/unknown status reported current PrEP use (19.7%, 242/1230). In men with PrEP-need, 68.2% (431/632) did not report current use. Current PrEP use was associated with age (aOR: 3.52, 95% CI: 1.76-7.02 in men aged 40-44 vs men aged 18-25) and education (aOR: 1.72, 95% CI: 1.01-2.92 in men with ≥ 2 years/still full-time vs no/ < 2 years of education since age 16).Conclusion: Among MSM in London, PrEP use is high but there is indication of unmet PrEP-need in men of younger age and lower levels of post-16 education. National programme monitoring and evaluation will require continued community monitoring to guide interventions ensuring equitable PrEP access and uptake in those who could most benefit from PrEP. Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has tremendous potential to decrease new HIV infections among populations at high risk, such as men who have sex with men (MSM). That potential is already becoming realized among adult MSM, where PrEP uptake has increased rapidly in the past several years. However, expanding PrEP access to adolescent MSM (AMSM) will be more challenging. This commentary reviews the existing scientific literature relevant to PrEP use for AMSM and highlights critical areas in need of further attention before PrEP is likely to impact the HIV epidemic among adolescents. We highlight concerns that need to be addressed in the areas of (1) achieving adequate coverage of PrEP in the adolescent population, (2) increasing awareness and access, (3) supporting adherence and maintenance, and (4) ensuring that PrEP does not perpetuate existing disparities. Across all of these domains, we highlight the central roles of parents and healthcare providers in supporting AMSM PrEP utilization. Finally, we suggest a number of areas of future research that must be addressed before PrEP is likely to see wide implementation among AMSM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite demonstrated efficacy, uptake of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) remains low, particularly among high-risk demographics such as transgender women, Black men who have sex with men (BMSM), and young MSM (YMSM). Research thus far has largely focused on individual factors that may impede PrEP uptake in these demographics, leaving social network factors relatively unexplored. The present study used data collected from participants within RADAR, a longitudinal cohort study in Chicago focused on understanding the individual, dyadic, network, social, and biologic factors associated with HIV infection within YMSM. Of the 906 study participants who did not report an HIV diagnosis at baseline, 7.0% reported using PrEP in the prior 6 months. Recent PrEP use was associated with both individual-level (age and gender) and network-level factors (mean relationship strength, sexual network degree, etc.). These findings highlight the need to expand beyond focusing on individual-level drivers of PrEP uptake, as well as changing our understanding of who is most important within a network (centrality vs. strength of weak ties). Future work is needed to determine whether variables associated with PrEP uptake are similarly connected to PrEP adherence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
