The primary heat transfer source in the conventional multi-cylinder drying of paper and board is conduction. Conduction is facilitated by high-tension contact with steam-heated cylinders, while convective drying, the main mass transfer source, operates as heated air flows over the article web in the pockets. This conduction process occurs at elevated temperatures and contact pressures to ensure effective contact between the wet paper web and the heated cylinders. The contact pressures and temperatures of the hot surface significantly influence the conductive drying characteristics. This research paper presents an experimental study that involves designing a simple lab-scale setup with in-situ and continuous sensing capabilities for various commercially available grades of paper and board. Embedded thermocouples measure the temperatures of the heated platen and the sheet, allowing the collection of flux data to determine heat transfer characteristics. The goal of this study is to ascertain the instantaneous contact coefficients for different basis weights as a function of moisture content. Drying of paper during 2000–2018 is reviewed. The review includes new drying processes, multi-cylinder dryers, tissue and impingement drying, TAD-drying, infrared drying and energy use for drying of paper. It includes general aspects of infrared dryers but not drying of coated papers. Paper quality aspects, paper shrinkage and paper isotherms are not included. Impingement drying has been the most successful new technology with several applications while others such as impulse drying has not been commercialized mainly due to problems with paper quality parameters. One promising development is the introduction of steel instead of cast iron cylinders with increased heat transfer reducing the number of cylinders. Future research should focus on modeling the internal transport phenomena and to couple these phenomena to paper shrinkage and quality parameters. The influence of the fabric for the drying process needs more attention, understanding the drying process for new components such as microfibrillar cellulose in the stock and reducing energy use and increasing the amount of renewable energies for drying of paper. Understanding heat transfer in corrugated fibreboard is important to the design of more effective packaging for industries which involve the freezing and chilling of food. In this work the thermal conductivity of papers which compose corrugated fibreboard were measured and used to validate finite element models of heat transfer in fibreboard. The results showed paper to be highly anisotropic, with thermal conductivity in the machine and cross machine directions being almost an order of magnitude larger than in the thickness direction. The finite element models showed good agreement with experimental results and demonstrated that the majority of heat transfer in corrugated fibreboard is though the fluted medium. Based on the finite element models, simple models for the prediction of the thermal performance of corrugated board were evaluated and shown to be very effective in reproducing the results of the more complex finite element methods. These simple methods can be used to perform corrugated fibreboard design calculations, and the models with and without radiation can be used to provide estimates of the lower and upper bounds of the thermal resistance for a given board design. The present study investigates the phenomenon of steam condensation in a rectangle horizontal channel with a mass flux range of 20–70 kg/m2/s and a vapor quality of 0.2–0.8. Mass flux and vapor quality were presented to primarily affect the heat transfer coefficient in shear-dominated flow regime, such as the mass flux is greater than 40 kg/m2/s. At the low mass flux, only slug flow, plug flow, and wave flow were observed. At the high mass flux, the wave flow and annular flow were observed even at the low-vapor quality, and the slug and plug flow were not found during the entire condensation process. Observed flow patterns agreed with Tandon’s flow pattern map. Four kinds of correlations are employed to predict the condensing heat transfer coefficient, and the result reveals that Cavallini’s correlation agrees with the experimental results relatively well.
