An integrated numerical model that describes the operation of a renewable-energy-based system for a building's heating, cooling, and domestic hot water needs is described in this study. The examined energy system includes a vapor compression multi-source heat pump, PVT collectors, borehole thermal energy storage, and water tanks. Energy balance equations for the collectors and the tanks are coupled with correlations for the heat pump and the piping losses within a thermal network approach. The non-linear system of equations that arises is solved by employing in-house software developed in Python v. 3.7.3. The performance of the numerical tool is validated against measurements collected during the pilot operation of such a system installed in Athens (Greece) for two 5-day periods (summer and winter). It is shown that the proposed model can predict, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the building's energy system performance, whereas limited deviations from the experimental findings are mostly observed when highly transient phenomena occur. The numerical tool is designed with flexibility in mind and can be easily adapted to accommodate additional energy-system configurations and operational modes. This numerical study aims at assessing the impact of the thermal energy storage (TES) operation strategy on the performance of a parabolic trough concentrated solar power plant (PT-CSP). This strategy consists of managing the TES charging process in order to minimize the plant's parasitic consumption. The study was conducted using a TRNSYS based dynamic simulation model of a 55 MW e PT-CSP plant similar to the ANDASOL plant located in the South of Spain. The simulation results were validated in comparison with the available experimental data in the literature. The results showed that the suggested operating strategy is efficient as the heat transfer fluid and the TES molten salt pumps' total parasitic consumption is reduced by 21% during a typical clear day of July. The variability and inhomogeneity of solar energy limits the development of solar heating systems (SHS) in many fields. In order to improve the utilization efficiency of SHS, this paper takes three typical cities (Xi'an, Dunhuang, Lhasa) as the research object, studies the operation state of SHS in student dormitory buildings, and puts forward a corresponding optimization strategy. The research shows that the reduction of water supply temperature will improve the operation efficiency and energy saving effect of a spontaneous combustion heat pump and that there is an optimal volume of heat storage water tank (HSWT), which can make the energy saving effect of SHS run better. The optimization of the SHS shows the water supply temperature is 35 °C, and the optimal volume of HSWT is 15 m3 in the "Resource-general area (Ⅲ)" represented by Xi'an, 25 m3 in the "Resource-rich area (Ⅱ)" represented by Dunhuang, and 40 m3 in the "Resource-richer area (Ⅰ)" represented by Lhasa. With the increase in the abundance of solar energy resources in the region, the optimal volume of HSWT also increases. Meanwhile, the solar energy contribution rate of the three regions in descending order is 61.3% (Lhasa), 32.8% (Dunhuang), and 25.9% (Xi'an). After optimization, the contribution of SHS increased by about 5%. Solar heating technology has the advantages of being high efficiency, energy-saving, and environment protecting; however, the instability of solar energy and its mismatch with the variation characteristics of building heat load have caused great difficulties in the design and the efficient operation strategy of a solar system. A heat storage tank is an important part of a solar hot water system. In order to improve system efficiency, this paper proposes a flat plate PCM storage tank, establishes a mathematical model, and conducts experimental verification under different working conditions. Experiments show that in the heat storage process, the phase change material (PCM) only accounts for less than 20% of the space of the PCM storage tank, and its heat storage can reach 50% of the total heat storage of the tank. In the discharge process, the water temperature of the ordinary tank decreases by 20 °C within 1.5 h, and the phase change process lasts approximately 3 h, with the water temperature remaining at 45~50 °C during this period. In the natural cooling process, the heat discharge of the two water tanks at night was similar, while the temperature of the ordinary water tank decreased by 12 °C and that of the phase change water tank decreased by 7 °C. By simulating the dynamic simulation model of the composite solar phase change thermal storage combined with an air-cooled heat pump system, the results show that the solar heating system with a PCM storage tank (SHS-PCM) saves 34% more energy than a solar heating system with a common tank (SHS-without PCM), and the volume of the PCM storage tank is reduced to 1/5 of the ordinary tank. The investment payback period method of energy saving reconstruction is used to analyze the economy of the SHS-PCM and the SHS-without PCM, the initial investment cost of the SHS-PCM is CNY 9858 higher than the SHS-without PCM, but the annual operation cost is saved by CNY 12,100, and the project investment payback period is 0.81 years, which has energy-saving potential and economic benefits. Research activity in the field of combined cooling heating power (or trigeneration) systems with high renewable energy source (RES) contributions has increased rapidly over the last few years, in line with the European Union legislation about energy communities. However, technical challenges arise regarding the synergetic, sustainable and optimal integration of RES in local energy systems. In the present study, the operation of a trigeneration system located in the student residences of Democritus University of Thrace in Greece is examined. The system involves a combination of highly promising renewable and storage technologies, including solar thermal energy and biomass for heat generation, hot water tanks for thermal energy storage, absorption refrigeration for cooling, along with Organic Rankine Cycle and photovoltaic systems for electricity generation. System modeling and simulation have been implemented in Dymola environment with the use of Modelica equation-based modeling language. The accuracy of the model response has been validated against available measurements. Specific design and control measures have been proposed, simulated in a transient fashion and evaluated in terms of (i) RES generation, (ii) solar fraction and (iii) temporal flexibility. The measures examined, including the placement of a Li-ion battery, resulted in an increase of 24.6% in the heating demand solar contribution and of 7.9% in the renewable energy generated for the electricity demand, over the examined periods. Utilizing biological processes for hydrogen production via gasification is a promising alternative method to coal gasification. The present study proposes a dynamic simulation model that uses a one-dimensional heat-transfer analysis method to simulate a biohydrogen production system. The proposed model is based on an existing experimental design setup. It is used to simulate a biohydrogen production system driven by the waste heat from an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant equipped with carbon capture and storage technologies. The data from the simulated results are compared with the experimental measurement data to validate the developed model's reliability. The results show good agreement between the experimental data and the developed model. The relative root-mean-square error for the heat storage, feed-mixing, and bioreactor tanks is 1.26%, 3.59%, and 1.78%, respectively. After the developed model's reliability is confirmed, it is used to simulate and optimize the biohydrogen production system inside the IGCC power plant. The bioreactor tank's time constant can be improved when reducing the operating volume of the feed-mixing tank by the scale factors of 0.75 and 0.50, leading to a 15.76% and 31.54% faster time constant, respectively, when compared with the existing design. The harsh indoor environment in winter in the hot-summer and cold-winter zones of China and the increasing demand for winter heating from residential consumers have prompted more and more researchers to address the energy-efficient heating problem in non-centralized heating areas. A computational fluid dynamics model of a typical building was developed to analyze the dynamic heat transfer characteristics and energy consumption of interior partitions under decentralized heating in this region, of which the accuracy of the established model was proved by the relative error of less than 5% compared with the experimental measurement. Then seven typical kinds of interior partition configurations with different wall thickness, wall material, and insulation layer locations were developed and evaluated through simulation analysis. Transient heat storage ratio and cumulative heat storage ratio were proposed to demonstrate the dynamic heat transfer characteristics of interior partitions. The simulation results showed that 180 mm and 220 mm solid clay bricks can reduce energy consumption by 17.56% and 30.23%, respectively, compared with 120 mm solid clay bricks. The energy consumption of fly ash aerated concrete and solid clay brick partitions were reduced by 10.18% and 19.02%, respectively, compared with porous concrete partitions. The dynamic heat transfer characteristics of internal partitions with internal insulation were similar to those with external insulation due to the reduction in unnecessary energy consumption transferred to adjacent unheated rooms by about 20% compared to that without insulation. Electric-Steam Integrated Energy Systems (ES-IES) have garnered considerable attention in industrial applications due to their high energy utilization efficiency and energy density. Nonetheless, the limited thermal storage capacity of the steam system impacts the stability of ES-IES, posing a challenge for its implementation in scenarios with a high proportion of renewable energy sources. To address this limitation, this study demonstrates how the integration of a Steam Accumulator (SA) can enhance the stability of ES-IES through a dynamic simulation-based approach. Firstly, a novel method for simulating the steam system is introduced. This method utilizes a resolution-adaptive strategy based on the central implicit difference format to balance simulation accuracy and speed. Furthermore, a simulation framework for ES-IES is delineated, detailing the solution order of subsystems and system coupling interface parameter interaction method. Meanwhile, a comprehensive model and solution for the SA are proposed, aligning well with the aforementioned ES-IES simulation methods in terms of accuracy and complexity. The industrial sector is one of the biggest oil consumers in Cyprus, corresponding to 20% of the fuel consumption. A parabolic trough collector (PTC) system seems the best option to produce clean thermal energy at higher temperatures than those that can be achieved from the already widely used flat plate collectors on the island. This paper presents a simulation model built to investigate the performance of the first industrial PTC system in Cyprus, installed at the Cyprus biggest soft drinks factory. The simulation model is built in TRNSYS and is validated using data from the real PTC system installed at the factory. The results show a very good fitting between the operating parameters and the power output of the Solar Field (SF), Concrete Thermal Storage System (CTES), and the Steam Generator (SG). The average percentage relative error of the system's contribution to the process is less than 6.32% for the daily steam production and during a week did not exceed 6.45%. The novelty of this study is the development of a design tool that can be used by potential interested industries to identify the suitable system that fits their needs. All data are provided in the form of graphs and allow anyone to use as input data the thermal energy demand and required steam temperature of the industry to retrieve information about the size of a suitable system which satisfies these requirements depending on each case. Sensible thermal energy storage is the most common solution for small-to-medium solar process heat systems. Hence, it is vital to enhance the thermal stratification and energy utilization of stratified tanks. In this study, four process heat systems are dynamically simulated: 1) S0 with a single outlet port to the load, 2) S1 with a single port and a thermostatic mixing valve, 3) M0 with multiple ports, and 4) M1 with multiple ports and a mixing valve. Two novel models are proposed for the compound parabolic collectors and the stratified tanks. System M1, with annual system efficiency of 47.3% and solar fraction of 0.57, was found to be the best-performing one, followed by S1, M0, and S0. System M1 also reduced the annual energy consumption of the backup heater in S0 by 16.45%. The thermostatic mixing valve reduced the thermocline thickness. The incorporation of both mixing valve and multiple ports delayed the startup of the heater, reduced the system's thermal losses, and slightly improved the collectors' efficiencies. The proposed tank model can be a viable tool for solar energy designers to optimize the number and relative positions of the inlet and outlet ports for maximized system efficiency and solar coverage. The considered system is investigated on three different days for the humid subtropical climate of Bandar Abbas, Iran. This study's primary outcome and contribution is a novel simulation framework via TRNSYS to predict the performance of the system under fluctuations of solar irradiation at this site. Both TES and STP systems are defined in TRNSYS software as a new component type via utilizing the Fortran program. The effects of various parameters, including the total energy absorbed by the central receiver, the thermal capacity of TES, and the heliostats field area, are investigated on crucial output parameters of the AMTEC. The mass flow rate of the heat transfer fluid at several areas is then studied in different operating conditions. The optimum area for the heliostats (14,500 m 2), leading to the highest AMTEC efficiency (18%) is determined, which requests a TES tank volume of 28.13 m 3. The present work focuses on the development of a detailed dynamic model of an existing parabolic trough solar power plant (PTSPP) in Spain. This work is the first attempt to analyse the dynamic interaction of all parts, including solar field (SF), thermal storage system (TSS) and power block (PB), and describes the heat transfer fluid (HTF) and steam/water paths in detail. Advanced control circuits, including drum level, economiser water bypass, attemperator and steam bypass controllers, are also included. The parabolic trough power plant is modelled using Advanced Process Simulation Software (APROS). An accurate description of control structures and operation strategy is necessary in order to achieve a reasonable dynamic response. This model would help to identify the best operation strategy due to DNI (direct normal irradiation) variations during the daytime. The operation strategy used in this model has also been shown to be effective compared to decisions made by operators on cloudy periods by improving power plant performance and increasing operating hours. Dynamic simulation provides an efficient approach for improving the efficiency of parabolic trough power plants and control circuits. In view of the contradiction between straight lifting type heald spring and structural arrangement, a non-contact type of flat scroll leaf spring for heald return was designed and developed. A CAD entity model of spiral spring based on archimedes spiral was constructed according to national machinery industry standard (JB/ T 7366-1994). The results of finite element analysis with static and dynamic show that elastic deformation and stress distribution of the spring can meet requirements of static strength design, and low-order modal frequencies of the spring is less than 1Hz, which can effectively avoid working frequency of high-speed cam lifting. Through dynamic simulation and data processing of flexible spiral spring, stiffness characteristic curve and energy storage curve of the spring in tightening process were obtained, which provided an important basis for accurate calculation of reaction torque T and energy storage density ρE, which is beneficial to dynamic design and practical application of spiral spring. Heat pumps play a key role in decarbonizing the heat supply for buildings. To exploit heat pump's potential in a resource‐efficient way, high coefficients of performance (COP) are required. For air‐source heat pumps, the COP is subject to outside temperature, building dynamics, and user demands. To achieve high COPs, it is necessary to design heat pumps to meet the demands and to optimize operation in terms of COP. In this study, we compare design methods according to DIN EN 15450 and VDI Guideline 4645. Based on these, heat pump systems (heat pump, auxiliary heater and thermal storages) are designed for an example building, and a controller is set up. Following VDI Guideline 4650, an Annual Performance Factor (APF) is used for comparison on the basis of dynamic simulations. For the same building, the study proves both systems to ensure supply temperatures at APFs about 3.5 to 4. Pumped thermal energy storage (PTES) technology offers numerous advantages as a novel form of physical energy storage. However, there needs to be a more dynamic analysis of PTES systems. This paper proposes a dynamic simulation model of the PTES system using a multi-physics domain modeling method to investigate the dynamic response of key system parameters during the system's start-up and variable operating conditions. Additionally, the impact of equipment parameters on system characteristics was analyzed. Furthermore, a comparative analysis was conducted to assess the variation in system characteristics when considering the different working medium properties. The results show that the system cavity volume should be selected as 5 m3, and the initial pressure of the system during the charge/discharge period should be selected as 2.1 MPa and 3.8 MPa, respectively. The system runs to the design operating conditions during the start-up process in about 1400 s. In the process of variable operation conditions, the power load in the charge/discharge period can be increased or reduced from the rated value by gas filling or venting, and the system characteristics change accordingly. A nuclear heating system integrated with a heat storage tank (HST-NHS) is a promising technical solution for countries with large-scale heating demand. HST-NHS can greatly curtail carbon dioxide emissions and contribute to sustainable development. Appropriate control strategies are not only crucial to realize the real-time matching between HST-NHS heat supply and heat demand, but also ensure the stable and safe operation of HST-NHS. Until now, control strategies for HST-NHS have received limited attention. A refined dynamic simulation model for HST-NHS is established based on APROS software. The verification of the built model in steady state and transient state is completed. Two basic control strategies for the primary heating network (PHN) of HST-NHS, constant supply water temperature and variable flow rate (CT-VF) and variable supply water temperature and constant flow rate (VT-CF) are presented in detail. Based on various typical working conditions of a central heating region in Liaoyuan City, the control effects of two control strategies are investigated. Additionally, a comprehensive performance comparison between the two strategies is explored. Simulation results indicated that under the two control strategies, the indoor temperature can be effectively controlled at a high comfort level. A centralized solar hybrid heating and cooling system satisfying the thermal, cooling and sanitary water demands of a typical Italian small district composed of six residential buildings situated in Naples (southern Italy) is modelled, simulated and analysed through the software TRNSYS over a period of 5 years. The plant is based on the operation of solar thermal collectors coupled with seasonal borehole storage; the solar field is also composed of photovoltaic solar panels connected with electric energy storage. An adsorption chiller powered by solar energy is adopted for cooling purposes, while a condensing boiler is used as an auxiliary unit. The performance of the proposed system has been assessed from energy, environmental and economic points of view and contrasted with the operation of a typical Italian heating and cooling plant, highlighting the following main results: saving of primary energy consumption up to 40.2%; (decrease of equivalent CO2 emissions up to 38.4%; reduction of operating costs up to 40.1%; and simple pay-back period of about 20 years. Recently there have been many reports on the application of phase change materials (PCM) in solar water heating system (SWHS). However, there are some doubts and different views in this field, since the sensitivity of the system to the PCM design parameters and external conditions. In this study, a typical SWHS with a PCM storage tank is proposed to overcome the existing problems. The mathematical model is established and validated against experimental data. Annual simulations have been done under a typical user load and different PCM design parameters (phase change temperature, PCM usage amount) among six cities which have different meteorological conditions. The results indicate that the application of PCM in SWHS can reduce the power consumption of electric auxiliary heater (EAH) and the heat loss, but the benefits vary widely by regions and PCM design parameters. The highest power saving rate is up to 31% in Lhasa which has extremely abundant solar energy, while for the heat loss saving rate the highest value is 9.9% in Guangzhou which is located in the hot summer and warm winter zone. Besides, a parametric study has been conducted to explore the power saving potentials with different PCM design parameters in different regions, as well as to discuss the optimal phase change temperature and the PCM usage amount. A micro gas turbine (MGT) is a potential option for distributed energy systems driven by fuel and solar energy. The dynamic characteristics of a solar-hybrid microturbine system are essential to its control development and performance assessment. In this paper, a dynamic model is proposed, including an MGT (T100), a tubular air receiver and a sensible thermal energy storage system, which are experimentally validated well. Based on the developed model, the dynamic responses of a solar-hybrid microturbine system in stand-alone mode are studied considering load and Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI) changes. Results show that the fuel consumption is greatly reduced by integrating solar energy, which comes at the cost of system instability; if the investigated system experiences a significant load decrease, heliostats must be oriented away from the air receiver to ensure a stable operation, whereas the load must be increased incrementally to avoid a compressor surge in the case of a significant load increase. Compared to load change, DNI change will cause smaller overshoots of the MGT's rotational speed and surge margin. A hybrid ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) is an efficient and sustainable technology for space heating and cooling. A demonstration house equipped with GCHP with a solar seasonal heat storage (SSHS) system had been built in Harbin, a severe cold zone of China. A dynamic simulation model was built for the house and GCHP with the SSHS system using TRNSYS. The model used a newly developed vertical ground heat exchanger (VGHE) module which considered coupled heat and moisture transfer (CHMT) in ground with variable soil properties (VSPs) and phase change of soil moisture (PCSM). In the simulation, a large amount of computing is consumed for VSP and PCSM, while the computing amount for moisture transfer is small. The model with the new VGHE module produced better simulated results, compared with the field data. So, CHMT-VSP-PCSM affects the performance of VGHE and system to some extent, especially CHMT. Hourly variation laws of temperatures and energy parameters were analyzed, and different characteristics were showed up at different operating stages in heating and cooling seasons for both long and short terms. The GCHP with the SSHS system can meet the heating and cooling demands of the house in general. In cooling season, adjusting the ratio of the two groups of VGHE for heat storage and cooling will increase the utilization efficiency of VGHE and make the soil temperature more balanced. Intelligent design and operation optimization allow energy systems to take advantage of the flexibility that multi-generation provides. This study proposes a basic solar-driven system integrated with thermal energy storage for round-the-clock energy harvesting. A modified configuration is then designed incorporating innovative multi-heat recovery approaches to increase the capacity and product diversity of the basic system. The modified system is able to cover vital urban utilities such as electricity, fresh water, cooling, and hydrogen throughout the day. To overcome the time-consuming procedure of dynamic techno-economic simulation as well as the limitation of commercial engineering equation solvers for tri-objective optimization, a deep learning approach is developed to reduce the computational complexity and improve the analysis accuracy. In this regard, the trained neural networks play an intermediary role in coupling the developed code with the MATLAB optimization toolbox. A comparison between the modified and conventional configurations indicates that implementing the multi-heat recovery approach results in a 29% increase in power generation while only increasing the overall system cost by 1.97%. From an economic perspective, the Sankey diagram depicts that the storage unit with a cost rate of 12.25 $/h accounts for 6.77% of the plant's cost rate, which enables the system to operate continuously. Abstract The adiabatic compressed air energy storage (A-CAES) system stores energy during periods of low energy demand (off-peak) and releases it to meet the higher demand in peak load periods. In this work, a modified A-CAES system with phase change materials and water thermal energy storage was proposed to achieve less energy loss. For the system, an apparent characteristic is cooling, heating, and power output simultaneously, and the most outstanding advantage is the utilization of thermal energy from ambient atmospheric air for the expansion process. By constructing the dynamic model of the system, performance of the system and each component are investigated in detail. The results show that the phase change thermal energy storage dynamic behavior has an important effect on stable output power: extending phase change time during discharge may steady power output. Under stable operation condition (after 3 cycles), the system can generate 308.27 kWh electricity, 50.98 kWh cooling and 185.25 kWh heat with a round-trip efficiency of 96.56% and an electricity efficiency of 61.15%. In the system, the air storage tank is the major contributor of energy loss, accounting for 86.67% of total energy loss. To the authors' best knowledge, the present study is the first of this kind for such a modified A-CAES system with phase change and non-phase change thermal energy storage. The aim of this work is to develop a numerical model for investigating the performance of an indirect hybrid solar dryer of wood using TRNSYS software. A solar compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) is used to produce thermal energy and the hourly dynamic simulations are conducted under Moroccan meteorological data. A comparative study between our numerical results and experimental results shows a good agreement and the Mean Relative Error (MRE) and the Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) are 3.9% and 0.024 kg/kg, respectively. The energetic performance of the solar dryer components is investigated and the effect of some design and operation parameters on drying kinetic is presented. An environmental analysis is performed by focusing on the amount of carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions due to the combustion at the auxiliary heater system. Results show that the integration of the solar collector into the dryer system leads to reduce the energy consumption by the auxiliary heater system and to avoid annually about 34% of CO 2 emissions. Abstract Concentrated solar power (CSP) plant with thermal energy storage can be operated as a peak load regulation plant. The steam generation system (SGS) is the central hub between the heat transfer fluid and the working fluid, of which the dynamic characteristics need to be further investigated. The SGS of Solar Two power tower plant was selected as the object. The mathematical model with lumped parameter method was developed and verified to analyze its dynamic characteristics. Five simulation tests were carried out under the disturbances that the solar tower power plant may encounter under various solar irradiations and output electrical loads. Both dynamic and static characteristics of SGS were analyzed with the response curves of the system state parameters. The dynamic response and time constants of the working fluids out of SGS was obtained when the step disturbances are imposed. It was indicated that the disturbances imposed to both working fluids lead to heat load reassignment to the preheater, evaporator and superheater. The proposed step-by-step disturbance method could reduce the fluid temperature and pressure fluctuations by 1.5 °C and 0.03 MPa, respectively. The results could be references for control strategies as well as the safe operation of and SGS. Abstract Integration of a latent heat energy storage into a solar heating system has become a well-known engineering practice that can bridge the mismatch between the heat demand of the served building and heat supply from the solar heating system. However, control schemes, energy performance analysis, characterization and optimization of such a system under the Tibet climatic/altitude conditions still remain a challenge. This research aims to investigate a PCM-integrated solar heating system applicable to Tibet which is unique in terms of the altitude, solar radiation, atmospheric pressure and water boiling temperature etc. The whole process involves (1) identification of the unique features of Tibet climate and altitude and relevant requirements to the solar system; (2) design of a PCM-integrated solar heating system based on a selected building in Lhasa and planning the potential control strategies appropriate to such a system; (3) analysis of the system's energy performance under different operational schemes; and (4) recommendation of the most appropriate system operational scheme and design strategy. A dynamic simulation model was established and applied to study the energy performance of such a system, in which the solar energy usage rate is defined as the performance evaluation index. It is found that the operational scheme 'A' has the best energy saving effect, followed by operational schemes B and C. The system presents a more favorite energy performance between 9:00 h–18:00 h, compared to other time slots in a typical winter day. Change in operational schemes creates a significant impact on the energy saving effect of the system. The results help wide and fast deployment of the PCM-integrated solar heating system and enable the determination of the best performing operational scheme and associated performance data appropriate to Tibet or similar regions in the world, thus making a significant contribution to the saving of fossil fuel energy consumption and reduction of the carbon emission on the regional and global scales. Abstract The combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plants are often required to provide the essential fast grid balance service between the load demand and power supply with the increase of the intermittent power generation from renewable energy sources. It is extremely challenging to ensure CCGT power plants operating flexibly and also maintaining its efficiency at the same time. This paper presents the feasibility study of a CCGT power plant combined with the cascaded latent heat storage (CLHS) for plant flexible operation. A 420 MW CCGT power plant and a CLHS dynamic models are developed in Aspen Plus based on a novel modelling approach. The plant start-up processes are studied, and large amount of thermal energy can be accumulated by CLHS during the start-up. For load-following operation, extensive dynamic simulation study is conducted and the simulation results show that the extracted exhaust gas can be used for thermal energy storage charging, and the stored heat can be discharged to produce high temperature and high pressure steam fed to the steam turbine. Besides, the stored heat can also be used to maintain the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) under warm condition to reduce plant restart-up time. Abstract Thermal energy storage (TES) plays a crucial role improving the efficiency of solar power utilization. Molten salt (MS) has gained a strong position as a thermal fluid in applications where solar power is stored and used overnight to provide dispatchable energy production. Novel process and operating concepts are being developed for TES systems that require reliable engineering tools. System-wide dynamic simulation provides a virtual test bench and analysis tool for assisting in process and control design and operational issues. Proper characterization of the thermal fluids in simulation tools is critical for successful simulation studies. In this paper, we report the experimental and modelling work related to counter-current heat exchange and free drainage test runs in CIEMAT's multi-purpose MS test loop at Plataforma Solar de Almería in Spain. We present a general method to define MS and non-condensable gas within a homogeneous pressure-flow solver. We present modelling of an indirect MS TES system connected to a thermal oil loop through TEMA type heat exchangers, model calibration with half of the experimental data, and finally, validation simulations against rest of the data. All these experimental data are previously unpublished. The model predicts the system behaviour with good agreement regarding temperatures, pressures, flow rates and liquid levels. The simulations suggest that the heat exchangers' shell sides suffer from trapped non-condensable gas which significantly affects heat transfer, heat loss to ambient air and hydrodynamic losses. Our results contribute to thermal-hydraulic, system-wide modelling and simulation of MS processes. The retrofit solution for domestic hot water (DHW) system in existing buildings requires to ensure the long-term energy security and efficiency as well as to minimise occupants' disturbance, construction works and installation costs. In this regard, the present study performs a techno-economic evaluation on a novel retrofit solution for DHW production in a pilot building. The proposed solution appoints a substantial role to the thermal energy storage through a 2-pipe hot water network utilisable for both DHW and heating purposes. The first storage level is provided by a centralised buffer storage supplied by a PV-BESS-driven heat pump while the second level consists of decentralised modular tanks installed in each dwelling for the production and storage of hot water. Firstly, experimental thermal performance of the proposed decentralised storages is investigated. By developing a dynamic simulation code, the energy efficiency of the proposed solution is compared to that of the existing system in the pilot building as well to that of a typical centralised system as a benchmark solution. Finally, economic analysis of the retrofit solution is performed to address capital expenditures of the system, including purchasing and installation costs, as well as its life cycle cost (LCC). The obtained results indicate that the proposed system reduces the annual energy consumption for DHW production more than 7,200 kWh, with respect to the existing DHW system. Furthermore, it is shown that, in the proposed system, the fraction of thermal loss from piping network decreases by 31.5%, compared to a typical DHW centralised system. Economic assessment of the proposed solution implies that this system, in terms of both mechanical and electrical components, requires 13.7% lower initial investment than a typical centralised system. The present study deals with a multi-objective analysis of an innovative decentralised system to produce and store domestic hot water (DHW), emphasising on the combined effects of the technological aspect, control strategy and user's behaviour. The proposed system, by relying on thermal energy storage, decouples energy production and demand while shaves peaks in the energy demand and, at the same time, provides more autonomy to users through local storages. To identify subtle interactions in components of DHW system, dynamic simulations are carried out by establishing a coupled TRNSYS-MATLAB code, calibrated and validated by experimental measurements. The energy analysis implies that the proposed system cuts the required annual electrical energy in half, of which up to 82% of needed primary energy is supplied from renewable sources, compared to previous electrical-decentralised system. The optimisation of the results through applying control strategies indicates that adopting a three-time charging scheme is advantageous in terms of providing a more stable temperature profile as well as a higher hot water temperature. Compared to an available-by-demand operation, this scheme reduces the required total annual electricity by 5.2 % and enhances total thermal loss from components up to 4.0%. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis on the results emphasises the striking role of the user behaviour in electrical energy consumption either via draw-off temperature or adjusting the pre-defined temperature for activation of the built-in auxiliary heater. A novel methodology for optimizing thermal storage for biomass boiler heating systems is presented in this paper. Biomass boiler heating systems have gradually gained popularity in residential, commercial, and large-scale district heating plants due to the lower carbon footprint of biomass energy. One unanswered question in this field was the size of the thermal energy storage (TES) tank with respect to different boiler capacities and different types of heat demand profiles. Different standards and recommendations (based only on boiler capacities) have been proposed by various organizations around the world with large deviations on the sizing of the TES tank, but without a clear technical basis for these recommendations. These inconsistencies impede the effective design and deployment of biomass boiler heating systems. This study used a dynamic process simulation system based on field data from a 25-kW wood pellet boiler with radiant floor heating. By running the simulation for different boiler capacities (N) and different types of heat demand profiles (i.e. low, medium, high, intermittent, and variable), the optimum TES tank volume can be estimated by evaluating the TES tank discharge efficiency, boiler on-time, boiler off-time, and maximum boiler output temperature. Linear correlations between optimum TES tank volume and boiler nominal capacity for different types of heat demand profiles were obtained. The results showed that the medium building heat demand (45% N) required the smallest TES tank volume while intermittent building demand requires the largest. High building demand (60% N) generates the highest TES tank discharge efficiency (up to 99%) but also requires large storage volume. From the economic point of view, it is recommended to size the thermal energy storage system such that the average building heat demand is around 45% of boiler nominal capacity. This paper outlines the development of models of a solar field designed to provide thermal energy to a Multi-Effect Desalination (MED) plant. The dynamic model can be used both for simulation and control purposes. Some of these models have been developed based on static and dynamic energy and mass balances, and some others are based on step response methods (experimental tests). The solar field comprises a flat-plate collector field, an air cooler, a heat exchanger and the corresponding pipelines and interconnections. The main purpose of the solar field is to feed the MED unit with hot water within a specific temperature range using two thermal storage tanks as input buffers to the MED system. The operational flexibility of a thermal power plant has played an essential and promising role in accommodating the increment of variability in the supply and demand sides in China. The rapid activation of thermal storage in entire coal-fired power plant lies at the heart for the strategy. Understanding the thermodynamic characteristics of the power unit in the transient process quantitatively remains a challenge. In this study, dynamic simulations of an entire 660 MW supercritical coal-fired power plant were conducted via GSE software, and the models were validated in the steady state and transient processes. Then, five different measures were introduced to regulate the extraction steam of high-pressure heaters for operational flexibility. The dynamic characteristics of the main thermodynamic parameters and output power were described and compared. Moreover, the operational flexibility of these measures was discussed. It turns out that: among the five measures, the change degrees of pressure, flowrate, and temperature in main devices increase with the increment in the number of throttled valves and/or the degree of feedwater bypass. The feedwater temperature at steady state reduces by 94.6 °C at most, and the maximum temperature change rate of metal slabs in HP heaters is −44.6 °C min −1 . The dynamic process for output power under different measures has two different ramp stages, namely, a rapid stage and a slow stage. Furthermore, compared with other measures, 100% throttling extraction steam of #1, #2, and #3 HP heaters has the best operational flexibility, that is, the maximum average power ramp rate in a minute, power capacity, and energy capacity are 6.19% of rate power per minute, 48.40 MW, 5.58 MW h, respectively. The average power ramp rate, power capacity and energy capacity increase with the increment in the number of throttled valves and/or the degree of feedwater bypass. Although, the horizontal thermally stratified storage tanks (TSST) are nowadays the most popular, especially in the domestic solar water heaters, most of the literature is oriented towards the vertical tanks. Recently, a smart adaptive model for TSST was proposed, where the grid segments size and location changes automatically according the different variations in the tank. It showed good agreement with experimental work, however the model and its validation was presented for the vertical configuration only. In this work, the adaptive-grid model is extended to the horizontal cylindrical tank orientation while accounting for the changes in grid segments cross-section during moving in the vertical direction as to be aligned with the thermocline region; the proposed model is validated with experimental data available in the literature. The results show an excellent agreement with the literature and yield a significant reduction in the number of nodes needed for the modeling (∼32.7% reduction) when compared to other horizontal tank models while accounting for the changes tank geometry in the vertical direction. The aim of this paper is to evaluate optimum design criteria for developing solar thermal integrated membrane distillation system for cogeneration of pure water and heat. The temporal and seasonal variability of the driving variables, such as ambient temperature and solar irradiance requires dynamic simulation of combined system using tools such as TRNSYS. Dynamic simulation and parametric analysis enables to design a functional system and then optimizes the design. In this study, the application of cogeneration system for residential households in United Arab Emirates is considered for per capita production of 4l/day of pure water and 50l/day of domestic hot water. The performance of cogeneration is optimized by varying various design parameters such as collector tilt angle, thermal storage volume and area of the solar collector field. Cogeneration solar fraction and payback period are considered as performance indicators for energetic and economic optimization. Further simulations are extended from small to large family application and for utilizing either flat plate (FPC) or evacuated tubular collector (ETC) systems. Optimized cogeneration system utilizes more than 80% of the available solar energy gain and operates at 45% and 60% collector efficiencies for FPC and ETC systems respectively Also, combined and system efficiencies of the cogeneration system are compared with standalone operational efficiencies for solar heaters and solar membrane distillation systems. Results show that, cogeneration operation reduces 6–16% of thermal energy demand and also enables 25% savings in electrical energy demand. The heat transfer performances of evaporators and condensers significantly affect the efficiency of household refrigerators. For enhancing heat transfer of the condensers and evaporators, a novel dual energy storage (DES) refrigerator with both heat storage condenser (HSC) and cold storage evaporator (CSE) is proposed. The performance comparison of three kinds of energy storage refrigerators: HSC refrigerator, CSE refrigerator and DES refrigerator is analyzed by establishing dynamic simulation models. According to the simulation results, the DES refrigerator combines the advantage of HSC refrigerator and CSE refrigerator, it has more balanced operational cycle and higher evaporation pressure and temperature. The DES refrigerator shows a best energy saving performance among the three energy storage refrigerators with largest off-time to on-time ratio of 4.3 and the electrical consumption saving can reach 32%, which is greater than the sum (28%) of the other two kinds of energy storage refrigerators. Due to their non-deterministic behaviour, renewable energies are defined as non-dispatchable energies and are largely coupled with energy storage systems to overcome the problem of matching energy production and demand. Hence, in the energy efficiency and conservation field there is growing interest towards energy storage systems, especially when combined with the demand side management (DSM) concept, representing DSM the possibility of shaping end user electricity consumption. In this work an existing installation of a thermal energy storage (TES) system coupled with heat pumps in an industrial building is presented and a dynamic simulation model is built to represent its behaviour. Simulations are performed to show the load shifting potential of such storage and costs and energy use are assessed for different configurations, in order to evaluate the viability of this TES application. In particular the demand side strategy considered is aimed at shifting energy demand for cooling to weekend daytime to recover surplus PV electricity or otherwise to off peak hours to profit from lower electricity tariffs. It is found that the use of TES implies increased energy demand, while costs can decrease when electricity tariffs with a considerable difference between on peak and off peak rates are applied. Furthermore the integration with renewable sources for electricity production, such as PV panels, makes the installation of TES economically interesting independently of the electricity tariff in place. The transition from fossil fuels to green renewable resources presents a key challenge: most renewables are intermittent and unpredictable in their nature. Energy storage has the potential to meet this challenge and enables large scale implementation of renewables. In this paper we investigated the dynamic performance of a specific Adiabatic Compressed Air Energy Storage (A-CAES) plant with packed bed thermal energy storage (TES). We developed for the first time a plant model that blends together algebraic and differential sub-models detailing the transient features of the thermal storage, the cavern, and the compression/expansion stages. The model allows us to link the performance of the components, in particular those of the thermal storage system, with the performance of the whole A-CAES plant. Our results indicate that an A-CAES efficiency in the range 60–70% is achievable when the TES system operates with a storage efficiency above 90%. Moreover, we show how the TES dynamic behaviour induces off-design conditions in the other components of the A-CAES plant. Such device-to-plant link of performance is crucial: only through integration of TES model in the whole A-CAES model is possible to assess the benefits and added value of thermal energy storage. As renewable energies are incorporated in larger shares in the electricity grid and district heating and cooling networks, the integration of storage solutions becomes more important. Thermal Energy Storage is an effective way to store heat and utilize the synergies between different energy carriers. Stratified storage tanks are a promising technology because of their low cost, simplicity and reliability. However, the modeling of the thermocline region in a stratified tank remains a challenge. There is a need to develop a fast and accurate 1D model for simulations and optimizations of TES. In this paper, a new discretization scheme is applied to the vertical axis of the storage tank. Orthogonal Collocation accurately represents the temperature profiles inside the storage tank with less points than the traditional multinode model, therefore running faster. Oscillations appear in the temperature profiles computed with orthogonal collocation if the thermocline represented is too steep and a low number of discretization points is used. But if a realistic thermocline is used as initial condition, the model performs well. Thus, it is appropriate to represent the real behavior of a storage tank, where uniform temperature conditions are avoided. Orthogonal Collocation on Finite Elements runs even faster and represents a good perspective for optimization studies. The model developed in this paper is validated with real data from a solar thermal plant with storage. A continuous and smooth model is also developed for natural convection inside the storage tank. The aim of the paper is to simulate multi-tank storage with the thermocline moving from tank to tank and compare the results against single tank storage. No analysis of this nature has previously been performed. The results lend added impetus to developing this new type of thermal energy storage, especially as heat losses through insulation have already been reduced a minimum. Dividing a seasonal thermal energy storage tank into smaller tanks reduces the negative effect of heat transfer through the thermocline. The work is a continuation of the concept already proposed in available literature of using multiple solar energy stores, but we focus mainly on developing a dynamic model of a system of this type and presenting the results of a time and thermocline dependent simulation. The study also encompassed examination of the thickness of thermal insulation of the storage tanks, with definitions of its critical size. Our study revealed that the use of multi-tank thermal energy storage reduces heat loss through the thermocline. This is illustrated mainly by changes in water temperature in the upper part of the tank, which fluctuates across a much smaller range than for a single tank. In the single tank system, the temperature drops below 60 °C, whereas for the multi-tank system it always remains above 64 °C. In addition, in the multi-tank solution the loss caused by the thermocline occurs in only one tank, leaving 3/4 of the storage system unaffected by thermocline loss. • The concept of multi tank seasonal thermal energy storage is examined. • The examination is based on the dynamic modeling. • Results are compared with the single tank thermal energy storage systems. • The examined system is more efficient due thermocline losses limitation. The capability to dynamically plan, predict, and control indoor conditioning allows to adapt to individual preferences of inhabitants and enables demand side management. While former mainly improves thermal comfort of inhabitants so does latter unlock ecological and financial opportunities mostly for energy utilities. Commonly, dynamic indoor conditioning is based on piece-wise constant indoor temperature constraints. This paper's contribution is the presentation of additional constraints: in particular ones expressed relative to the nominal behavior of a hydronic heating system. This allows to simultaneously harness the relevant process variables in particular during the pre-loading and post-loading phases of a load reduction. The findings are based on data sets acquired on 10 inhabited, residential buildings in Stockholm over a whole year. One of the findings is that building models need to be adaptable if predictive control is applied in practice. This adaptability is assured by a novel concept, i.e. a so called model manager on which the control is relying for the selection of the most accurate model. Centralized optimal control of buildings connected to a district heating network is challenging in practice due to a high computational load. In order to reduce it, the herein presented method elaborates plans only every hour instead of at every control step for optimal control. Since these plans cannot be optimal due to the lack of regular update a hitherto unknown cascaded control logic has been developed that corrects planning errors and other disturbances. Capabilities are demonstrated and compared to conventional controllers in dynamic simulations of a multi-zoned building. The herein presented method is to our knowledge the first to provide all flexibility desired by energy utilities and inhabitants alike through harnessing the consequences of transitions. The transient performance of solar thermal power plants is critical to the system design and optimization. This study numerically investigates the dynamic efficiencies of an open-loop air receiver and a thermal energy storage unit. One-dimensional dynamic models of the air receiver and thermal energy storage were developed using the Modelica language with a graphical user interface and the Dymola solver to provide comprehensive thermal simulation at low computational cost. An air receiver and thermal energy storage experimental platforms were built to validate the simulation models. The simulation results compare well with the experimental data, so the models can be used to predict the variations of air receiver and thermal energy storage efficiencies. The models were then combined into a receiver and thermal energy storage system model with control schemes. The schemes control the air receiver outlet air temperature at relatively stable values while the thermal energy storage automatically switches between charging, discharging and stand-by modes. This study presents the modelling and dynamic simulation of a high penetration wind diesel power system (WDPS) consisting of a diesel generator (DG), a wind turbine generator (WTG), consumer load, dump load and a battery energy storage system (BESS). First the WDPS architecture and the models of the WDPS components are described. The WDPS is simulated in wind-only (WO) mode where the DG is not running and the WTG supply active power and in wind-diesel (WD) mode where both DG and WTG supply power. The simulation results are given showing graphs of the main electric variables in the WDPS (system frequency and voltage and active power in each component) and main battery variables (current, voltage and state of charge). The results in the WO mode show how the BESS, under the command of a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller, supplies/stores active power to regulate the isolated system frequency. The WD control enables the BESS to smooth the load and wind power variations, so that the isolated system power quality is improved. Also it is shown in the WD mode a peak shaving application where the control orders the BESS to supply active power temporarily to support system frequency in a DG overload situation. A ground source heat pump system (GSHPS) utilizes a relatively stable underground temperature to achieve energy-saving for heating and cooling in buildings. However, continuous long-term operation will reduce the soil temperature in winter, resulting in a decline in system performance. In this research, in order to improve the system performance of a GSHPS, a ground heat pump system integrated with solar thermal storage was developed. This solar-assisted ground heat pump system (SAGHPS) can both maintain the balance of the soil temperature effectively and achieve higher system performance than the conventional system. In this paper, in order to examine the characteristics of the system, a dynamic simulation was conducted under various conditions. The results of our case study provide specific operation data such as heat exchange rate, heat source temperature, and heat pump COP. As a result, the heat pump COP of SAGHPS was 4.7%, 9.3% higher than that of the GSHPS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sustainable solutions for energy saving in buildings are assuming increasing interest both in the research and the industrial community. In this view, cool roof systems demonstrated to be interesting and effective solutions which role in energy saving for cooling and mitigating local and global warming is already acknowledged. In these recent years, several studies were carried out in order to quantify their thermal-energy effect with varying boundary conditions, while global climate analytical models were proposed with the purpose to evaluate the effect of high albedo solutions in terms of radiative forcing and CO 2eq offset. This work concerns the combined analysis of thermal-energy and environmental effect of cool roof (high albedo) clay tiles with low visual impact, specifically optimized in order to preserve traditional residential buildings. In particular, dynamic simulation models and field monitoring of a real residential village were developed and the effect of such tiles is analyzed in terms of energy saving for cooling and of CO 2eq avoided emissions due to the energy efficient intervention, coupled with the effect in climate change mitigation. This aspect is specifically considered by applying an analytical method elaborated in previous works, where the effect of high albedo surfaces in terms of CO 2eq offset is quantified with varying orientation, inclination, solar reflectance and geographical details. The combined analysis showed how an overall annual CO2 emissions’ offset is achievable by coupling single-building and global assessment methodologies. In particular, the energy saving contribution saved around 141 tonnes of CO 2eq per year, and the global warming analytical model showed that the albedo increase allowed to offset about 772 tonnes of CO 2eq per year. This prototypical study showed how local energy analysis should be coupled to global analysis in order to have an exhaustive view of building retrofit strategies’ sustainability.
