One of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations is to bring the global maternal mortality ratio down to less than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030. Therefore, pinpointing the factors that influence maternal near-misses would help expedite the accomplishment of this goal. Studies on these topics are, nevertheless, scarce in the Hadiya zone and throughout Ethiopia as a whole. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the factors that contribute to maternal near-misses among women who are admitted to public hospital maternity wards in the Hadiya zone in central Ethiopia. A facility-based, unmatched case-control study was conducted from February 17 to August 16, 2019. The study covered all secondary and tertiary public healthcare facilities in the Hadiya zone, which includes three district hospitals and one referral hospital offering comprehensive emergency obstetric care services. The study included 279 women in total (70 cases and 209 controls). Mothers who had had a near-miss were the cases, and mothers who had not had one were the controls. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 24 was used to analyze the data, and the multivariable binary logistic regression model was used to control confounders. The odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to determine statistical significance at a p-value of less than 0.05. Living in a rural area [adjusted OR (AOR)=3.16; 95% CI: 1.62, 6.16], no birth preparedness (AOR=3.50; 95% CI: 1.66, 7.41), ever gave birth by cesarean section (AOR=3.68; 95% CI: 1.63, 8.31), previous history of hypertension (AOR=3.69; 95% CI:1.52, 8.96), and poor knowledge of pregnancy danger signs (AOR=3.15; 95% CI: 1.32, 7.52) were all determinants of maternal near-miss. Introduction: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders have a greater negative impact on nurses' well-being, both physically and emotionally. Because of this issue, nurses take excessive leave, are absent from work, quit their profession, and have a lower quality of life. This leads to an increase in human and economic losses to health care institutions. However, there is a paucity of information about work-related musculoskeletal disorders among nurses in the study area. Objective: This study aimed to assess the magnitude of work-related musculoskeletal disorders and its factors associated among nurses in Hospitals of West Shoa Zone, Central Ethiopia, 2021. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional facility-based study was conducted with 406 systematically selected nurses from March 2021 to June 2021. A simple random sampling was used to select study subjects. Data were gathered through face-to-face interviews. The data has been cleaned and checked, entered Epi Data 3.1, and exported into Statistical Package for Social Sciences software version 25 for further analysis. Bivariable and multiple logistic regressions were used to determine the factors associated with outcome variable. The level of statistical significance was reported to be less than 0.05. Results: The prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders was 73.8% and the highest report 247 (62.2%) was seen in the lower back which was followed by the neck 182 (45.8%) and elbow 126 (31.7%), while the lowest affected body part was ankle 46(11.6%). Working in the medical ward (COR = 5.91, 95%CI: 2.53–13.79), surgical ward (COR = 9.63, 95%CI: 3.64–15.51), and operation room theater (COR = 6.02, 95%CI: 2.37–15.27) had higher risk to work-related musculoskeletal discomfort as compared to those who were worked in outpatient department. Nurses those experienced bending or twisting back as a problem during work 2.33 times more likely to have higher risk WMSDs as compared to those who didn't perceive it with (COR 2.33, 95% CI: 1.47–3.71). Conclusion: In this study, the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among nurses was high. Working in room/ward, working in malposition, have no on job training to prevent work-related musculoskeletal disorders and bending or twisting back during work were identified as associated factors. Background: Switching from a long-acting family planning (LAFP) method to another could lead to an unintended pregnancy. However, the proportions of LAFP method switching and predictable factors are not well addressed. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the magnitude of LAFP method switching and associated factors among revisit women. The study also explored the reasons for the LAFP method switching among the revisited women. Method: A mixed methods study was conducted among 377 reproductive age women attending public health facilities in Toke Kutaye district, West Shoa, Zone, Ethiopia, from 20 May 2021 to 28 July 2021. A systematic random sampling for quantitative and purposive sampling technique for qualitative study was used to select the study participants. A pretested structured questionnaire and in-depth interview were used to determine and explore long-acting family planning switching among revisit women. Data were analysed by Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21. Binary logistic regression was conducted to identify the dependent and independent variables at p-value < 0.05 along with 95% Confidence Interval (CI) and Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR). The qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: The magnitude of long-acting family planning method switching was 53.3%. Switching from an implant to other short-acting method was 39.8%, and switching from an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) to other short-acting method was 13.5%. A formal education (AOR, 10.38, 95% CI: 3.48, 30.95), birth spacing (AOR, 5.52, 95% CI: 1.31, 23.33) and perceived infertility (AOR, 11.16, 95% CI: 5.55, 22.45) were factors associated with LAFP switching. The qualitative findings revealed that fear of side effects, lack of adequate information, religion, and misconceptions hinder users from maintaining the LAFP. Conclusions: The study finds that the proportion of women switching from long-acting family planning was relatively higher than in other studies. The main reasons for LAFP switching were fear of side effects, lack of adequate information specific to LAFP and misconceptions. Therefore, the provision of quality contraceptive counselling by the service providers may mitigate the concern of IUD and implant switching. Introduction: khat (Catha edulis Forsk), is an evergreen flowering tree or shrub widely produced and consumed in East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. In Ethiopia, it is largely produced, freely marketed and consumed by almost all segments of the population. This is more pronounced in the Eastern part of the country. However, there exists little scientific information on the level and associated factors of khat use among pregnant women in Ethiopia, despite a few available evidences indicated its adverse effect on pregnancy outcomes. Moreover, the perceived reasons for chewing khat during pregnancy were not yet explored qualitatively to triangulate the quantitative findings. Hence, the aim of the present study was to determine the magnitude and associated factors of chewing khat during pregnancy in Eastern Ethiopia, 2022, in a Mixed Method study approach. Methods: an institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from August 1st to 14th, 2022 using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Two hundred forty-two pregnant mothers on Antenatal care (ANC) were included in the study. Moreover, 18 purposively selected pregnant mothers on ANC were also considered for qualitative data. Analysis of quantitative data was performed on Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27 and thematic framework analysis was performed for qualitative data. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify variables which are significantly associated with khat chewing during pregnancy and to estimate the variable's crude and adjusted odds' ratio with corresponding 95% CI. The statistically significant association was declared at p-value of less than 5% Results: the overall magnitude of chewing khat during pregnancy in the present study was 27.4% (95% CI: 22.2-33.0). Variables which significantly associated with chewing khat during pregnancy in this study were being >26 years [adjusted odds' ratio (AOR)=2.81 95% CI: 1.19-6.59], being a rural resident (AOR=2.82 95% CI: 1.19-6.69), being illiterate (AOR=4.31 95% CI: 1.02-18.20), participants having chewer husbands (AOR=3.51 95% CI: 1.33-9.24) and respondents having other chewer family members (AOR=3.05 95% CI: 1.19-7.77). In addition, the perceived reasons for chewing khat explored through in-depth interviews were for socialization, to obey tradition, to be happy with friends, husbands and families, to be free from tensioned situations, to be effective in performing daily activities, and due to lack of knowledge of its harm Conclusion: in the present study, a relatively higher proportion of mothers chewed khat during their current pregnancy. Being older age, living in rural areas, being illiterate, having khat chewer husbands and other family members were statistically significant variables associated with khat chewing during pregnancy. Moreover, pregnant mothers are practicing chewing of khat in the current study area due to deep-rooted sociocultural issues. Hence, creation of awareness on possible harm of chewing khat during pregnancy especially for those found to be at significantly increased risk of consumption in this study is highly recommended during their antenatal care visits. In addition, creation of awareness out of health institutions, at household and community level, is highly recommended, probably using community volunteers (health development armies) in the present study area. At last, we highly also recommend the local government and religious leaders to work on how to stop the chewing practice especially during pregnancy. Background: In developing countries, home delivery increases the risk of maternal and perinatal mortality. Despite this, home deliveries account for a considerable share of deliveries in developing nations such as Ethiopia. Evidence on factors that affect homebirth is required for the measures needed to overcome these conditions. Objective: To identify predictors of homebirth among women attending health facilities in Wondo Genet, Sidama Region. Methods: Unmatched case-control study was conducted from May to June 2021 among 308 mothers (102 cases and 206 controls) who recently delivered and visited either postnatal care or sought immunization service at public health facilities of Wondo Genet. A structured interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Epi-Data version 3.1 was used for data entry, and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 was used for data analysis. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify the determinants of homebirth. The association between the outcome variable and independent variables was declared statistically significant at a P-value < 0.05 with a 95% Confidence Interval (CI) in a multivariable model. Results: Rural residence [AOR: 3.41; 95%CI: 1.58–7.39], lifetime physical IPV [AOR: 2.35; 95%CI: 1.06–5.17], grand-multiparity [AOR: 5.36; 95%CI: 1.68–17.08], non-use of contraception before recent pregnancy [AOR: 5.82; 95%CI: 2.49–13.60], >30 min to reach health facility [AOR: 2.14; 95%CI: 1.02–4.51], and lack of facemask [AOR: 2.69; 95%CI: 1.25–5.77] were statistically significant predictors of homebirth. Conclusion and recommendation: The access gap to maternity services should be narrowed between rural and urban women. Healthcare programs concerning women's empowerment could help reduce persistent intimate partner violence. Family planning needs to be promoted, and multiparous women should be counseled on the adverse obstetric consequences of homebirth. Background: Worldwide, more than one million peoples acquire sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The burden of STIs and the youth awareness level on the transmission of STIs is under investigated in Sidama Regional State. Objective: To determine the seroprevalence of STIs such as hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), Anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies, Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seroprevalence, and syphilis and to determine associated factors among youth-friendly services Attendees at selected health facilities in Hawassa city, Ethiopia. Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted among 416 randomly selected youth attending youth-friendly services at selected health facilities from May to August 2021. To collect the background characteristics of participants an interviewer-administered questionnaire was used. Blood samples were collected, processed, and tested using Advanced Quality One Step rapid colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay for detection of antibodies for syphilis and hepatitis C virus infection, and hepatitis B virus surface antigen. For the diagnosis of syphilis Rapid Plasma Reagin was also used. HIV1/2 STAT PAK, HIV1/2/O ABON and HIV1/2 SD Bioline were used for testing antibodies for HIV infection. Data entry and analysis were performed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0 software. A crude and adjusted odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was computed to identify associated factors. Results: The overall seroprevalence of STIs was 11.5% (48/422), with a 95% CI: (8.7−14.9). Out of the 48 positive results, the proportions of HBsAg, Anti-HCV, HIV, and syphilis were 56.3% (27/48), 27.1% (13/48), 10.4% (5/48), and 6.3% (3/48) respectively. Out of 416 participants, 17.1% responded that it is safe to have sex without using a condom. The Odds of developing STI among female participants, participants who did not identify alcohol intake as a risk factor for STIs, and those who engaged in transactional sex were (AOR = 2.989: 95% CI: 1.27, 7.02), and (AOR = 2.393, 95% CI: 1.18, 4.81) and practice of transactional sex (AOR = 5.527, 95% CI: 1.62, 18.75). Conclusions: STIs are common among youth-friendly services Attendee in Hawassa city The overall STI was significantly associated with sex (females), not able to identify alcohol intake as a risk factor, and practice of transactional sex. Background: Worldwide teenage pregnancies develop many devastating complications, both the mother and the neonate like developing anemia, nutritional deficiency, pregnancy induced hypertension, preterm baby, inadequate weight gains and obstructed labor, fistula and sepsis. Reproductive health concerns of adolescents the main emphasis area which increasing international attention in recent years. Therefore, we intended to assess the magnitude and its associated factors of teenage pregnancy in Bahir Dar city administration health institutions, northwest, Ethiopia, 2017.Methods: A health institution based a cross-sectional study was conducted among pregnant mothers from February 20-March 27, 2017 in Bahir Dar city administration. Five hundred forty-nine participants were selected by face to face interview and medical card review by using systematic random sampling technique every four intervals for each health institution. Bivariate and multivariate data analysis was performed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) Windows version 21 and level of significance of association was determined at P- value < 0.05.Result: The study identified 12.2%with (95%CI (9.5, 14.9)) of pregnant women were teenagers. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that: [(AOR (95% CI)) rural residency 3.21(1.234, 9.345), age at first marriage < 18 years 9(7.823, 17.571) and not using contraception prior to this pregnancy 5.22(3.243, 11.675)] were significantly associated with teenage pregnancy.Conclusion: The magnitude of teenage pregnancy was comparable to the 2016 Ethiopian demographic health survey finding. Rural residency, age at first marriage and not using of contraception prior to the current pregnant were significantly associated with teenage pregnancy. As per the findings, awareness creation to the rural population, advocating utilization of contraception, avoid early marriage and put the mindset the effect of teenage pregnancy for those are needed. Background: Ethiopia federal ministry of health has been working on increasing access to immunization service by deploying solar refrigerators to primary health care facilities. However, there is limited evidence on cold chain and vaccine management status. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess knowledge of vaccine handlers and status of cold chain and vaccine management and their associated factors in primary health care facilities of Tigray region Northern Ethiopia. Methods: Institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted in four randomly selected districts of Tigray region, Northern Ethiopia. In each selected district, all primary health care facilities with functional vaccine refrigerators were included in the study. Data were collected using a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire. The collected data were entered into Epi-data version 3.1 and then exported to Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21 for analysis. All variables with p-value of < 0.25 in bivariate logistic regression analysis were included in multi-variable model to identify predictors of the dependent variables. Results: In this study, fifty Primary Health Care Facilities (PHCFs) were included with a response rate of 94.4%. The overall level of good knowledge of vaccine handlers and good status of cold chain and vaccine management were 48% (95% CI; 30.7%-62%) and 46% (95%CI; 26.1%-61.3%) respectively. Receiving training on cold chain and vaccine management (AOR = 5.18; 95%CI: 1.48–18.18) was significantly associated with knowledge of vaccine handlers. Furthermore, receiving supportive supervision (AOR = 4.58; 95%CI: 1.04–20.17) and good knowledge of vaccine handlers (AOR = 10.97; 95%CI: 2.67–45.07) were significant associated with cold chain and vaccine management. Conclusions: This study showed that knowledge of vaccine handlers on cold chain and vaccine management was poor. Similarly, the cold chain and vaccine management status was also poor. Therefore, on-site training should be provided to vaccine handlers to increase their knowledge, so as to improve their practices on cold chain and vaccine management. Background: Inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in healthcare facilities (HCFs) have an impact on the transmission of infectious diseases, including COVID-19 pandemic. But, there is limited data on the status of WASH facilities in the healthcare settings of Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess WASH facilities and related challenges in the HCFs of Northeastern Ethiopia during the early phase of COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from July to August 2020. About 70 HCFs were selected using a simple random sampling technique. We used a mixed approach of qualitative and quantitative study. The quantitative data were collected by an interviewer-administered structured questionnaire and observational checklist, whereas the qualitative data were collected using a key-informant interview from the head of HCFs, janitors, and WASH coordinator of the HCFs. The quantitative data were entered in EpiData version 4.6 and exported to Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25.0 for data cleaning and analysis. The quantitative data on access to WASH facilities was reported using WHO ladder guidelines, which include no access, limited access, and basic access, whereas the qualitative data on challenges to WASH facilities were triangulated with the quantitative result. Results: From the survey of 70 HCFs, three-fourths 53 (75.7%) were clinics, 12 (17.2%) were health centers, and 5 (7.1%) were hospitals. Most (88.6%) of the HCFs had basic access to water supply. The absence of a specific budget for WASH facilities, non-functional water pipes, the absence of water-quality monitoring systems, and frequent water interruptions were the major problems with water supply, which occurred primarily in clinics and health centers. Due to the absence of separate latrine designated for disabled people, none of the HCFs possessed basic sanitary facilities. Half (51.5%) of the HCFs had limited access to sanitation facilities. The major problems were the absence of separate latrines for healthcare workers and clients, as well as female and male staffs, an unbalanced number of functional latrines for the number of clients, non-functional latrines, poor cleanliness and misuse of the latrine. Less than a quarter of the HCFs 15 (21.4%) had basic access to handwashing facilities, while half 35 (50%) of the HCFs did not. The lack of functional handwashing facilities at expected sites and misuse of the facilities around the latrine, including theft of supplies by visitors, were the two most serious problems with hygiene facilities. Conclusion: Despite the fact that the majority of HCFs had basic access to water, there were problems in their sanitation and handwashing facilities. The lack of physical infrastructure, poor quality of facilities, lack of separate budget to maintain WASH facilities, and inappropriate utilization of WASH facilities were the main problems in HCFs. Further investigation should be done to assess the enabling factors and constraints for the provision, use, and maintenance of WASH infrastructure at HCFs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ethiopia is one of the countries accounted for over 90% of annual visceral leishmaniasis incidence. Despite this, yet there are no active and passive surveillance activities in the Amhara Region that will give up-to-date information about the disease status at the health facility levels. Therefore, this study aimed to report up-to-date information about visceral leishmaniasis and its trend status at two health facilities and the surrounding areas. A retrospective study from October 2017 to May 2021 was conducted by reviewing patient records at Metema and Addis Zemen Hospitals. Data on Sex, age, occupation, residence, month, year, and rK39 test results were collected using a questionnaire and were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. The chi-square test was used to see the association between variables. p < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Of the 2,703 visceral leishmaniasis suspected cases diagnosed with the rK39 test, 877 (32.4%) were confirmed (positive) cases. Monthly and yearly trends depicted that the largest number of suspected cases was reported in October and 2018, respectively. Daily laborers were the most affected individuals in Metema areas. Introduction: pneumonia is an inflammation of the parenchymal structure of the lung which is the leading and substantial cause of mortality and morbidity in under-five children. Methods: institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted using a systematic random sampling technique. Collected data entered to Epidata version 3.1 and analysed with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression at P<0.05 was used. Results: among a total of 343 study participants, 176 (50.3%) was males and the mean age of study participants was 22.78 months, median age 21 months with (SD)± 14.65. The overall prevalence of pneumonia was 99 (28.9%) at [95% CI; 24.2-33.5]. caring on mothers back or besides during cooking (AOR 15.64; 95% CI (3.10-49.23), P = 0.004), children sleep in the same cooking room (AOR 6.63, 95% CI (3.88-50.09), P = 0.007) and presence of smokers in family (AOR 13.72, CI (1.74-21.09), P = 0.022) P< 0.05 were factors associated with pneumonia. Conclusion: the current prevalence of pneumonia was relatively high. Holding children back or besides during cooking, children sleep in the same cooking room and the presence of smokers in the family were factors associated with pneumonia. Background: Anti-malaria pharmaceuticals inventory control system helps to maintain an appropriate stock level using logistics management information system records and reports. Antimalaria pharmaceuticals are highly influenced by seasonality and demand variation. Thus, to compensate the seasonality, resupply quantities should be adjusted by multiplying the historical consumption with the Look-ahead seasonality indexes (LSI) to minimize stock-outs during the peak transmission season and overstocks (possible expiries) during off-peak seasons The purpose of this study was to assess anti-malaria pharmaceuticals inventory control practice and associated challenges in public health facilities of the Oromiya special zone, Amhara region, Ethiopia.Methodology: Facility-based cross-sectional study design employing both quantitative and qualitative methods, explanatory sequential mixed method, of data collection and analysis was used in all public health facilities in the Oromia special zone from September 1 to September 30, 2019. The study was conducted in 27 health centers and 2 hospitals, the dispensing units managing anti-malaria pharmaceuticals and data was collected using observation checklists The quantitative data were analyzed by Statistical package for social sciences using linear regression. Purposive sampling was used to select key informants and 12 in-depth interviews were conducted by the principal investigator. Thematic analysis was performed using Nvivo 11 plus and interpretation by narrative strategies.Results: The quantitative finding in this study revealed that none of the health facilities surveyed calculated months of stock and multiplied the historical consumption with look ahead seasonal indices (LSI) to forecast the upcoming year consumptions.. Average months of stock of anti-malaria pharmaceuticals were 5.32 months with the annual wastage rate of 11.32%. The point and periodic availability of anti-malaria pharmaceuticals was 72.38 and 77.03% respectively. The number of stocks out days within the previous 6 months was 41.34 days. The study also reported bin card usage (β = - 3.5, p = 0.04) and availability of daily dispensing register (β = - 2.7, p = 0.005) had statistically significant effect on anti-malaria pharmaceuticals inventory control practice. The perceived challenges attributed to the poor anti-malaria pharmaceuticals inventory control practice were lack of integrated pharmaceutical logistics system training, management support, inadequate and near expiry supply from pharmaceuticals supply agency, job dissatisfaction, and staff turnover.Conclusion: Inventory control practices for anti-malaria pharmaceuticals was poor as indicated by maximum stock level and none of the health facilities calculated months of stock and the previous consumption was not multiplied by look ahead seasonal indices to compensate the seasonal and demand variation. Efforts should be under-taken by concerned bodies to improve inventory control practice; such as training and regular follow up have to be provided to the health professionals managing anti-malaria pharmaceuticals. Background: Tuberculosis remains a major public-health problem in the world, despite several efforts to improve case identification and treatment compliance. It is well known cause of ill-health among millions of people each year and ranks as the second leading cause of death from infectious disease worldwide. Despite implementation of the World health organization recommended strategy, the reductions in the incidence of TB have been minimal in high burden countries. Objectives and methods: A case control study was carried out to assess the risk factors of TB, where cases were newly registered bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB patients with age greater than 15 years who present at twenty health centres in Addis Ababa. Controls were age and sex matched attendees who presented in the same health centers for non-TB health problems. Results: A total of 260 cases and 260 controls were enrolled in the study and 45.8% of cases and 46.2% of controls were in the 26–45 years age bracket. According to the multivariable logistic regression analysis, seven variables were found to be independent predictors for the occurrence of TB after controlling possible confounders. Patients who live in house with no window or one window were almost two times more likely to develop tuberculosis compared to people whose house has multiple windows (AOR = 1.81; 95% CI:1.06, 3.07). Previous history of hospital admission was found to pose risk almost more than three times (AOR = 3.39; 95% CI: 1.64–7.03). Having a household member who had TB was shown to increase risk of developing TB by three fold (AOR = 3.00; 95% CI: 1.60, 5.62). The study showed that illiterate TB patients were found to be more than twice more likely to develop TB compared to subjects who can atleast read and write (AOR, 95% CI = 2.15, 1.05, 4.40). Patients with household income of less than 1000 birrs per month were more than two times more likely to develop TB compared to those who had higher income (AOR = 2.2; 95% CI: 1.28, 3.78). Smoking has also been identified as important risk factor for developing TB by four times (AOR = 4.43; 95% CI: 2.10, 9.3). BCG was found to be protective against TB reducing the risk by one-third (AOR = 0.34; 95% CI: 0.22, 0.54). Conclusion: This study showed that TB is more common among the most agile and economically active age group, and number of windows, history of hospital admission, a household member who had TB, illiteracy, low household income and smoking and lack of BCG scar were identified as independent risk factors. Therefore it is imperative that the TB control effort need a strategy to address socio economic issues such as poverty, overcrowding, smoking, and infection control at health care facilities level is an important intervention to prevent transmission of TB within the facilities. Background: Companionship during delivery is an important feature of compassionate and respectful maternity care. It has a positive impact on delivery and birth outcomes. In low resource countries like Ethiopia lack of companionship discourages women from accessing facility-based delivery care. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the utilization of companionship during delivery and associated factors. Methods: Health facility-based cross-sectional study design was done from October to November 2019. Interviewer administered questionnaires were used to collect the data from 418 study participants. The data were entered with Epi data version 4.4 and exported to Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25.0 for analysis. Binary logistic regression was done. Statistical significance was declared at P- values < 0.05 with a 95% confidence level. Results: The finding of the study showed that only 13.8% of mothers utilize companionship during delivery. Variables such as having a desire to have companionship during delivery in the health facilities (AOR = 5.17, CI 95% 2.63, 10.16), having complication during the labor and delivery (AOR = 3.48, CI 95%, 1.81, 6.70), and being primipara (AOR = 2.05, CI 95% 1.09, 3.87) were the independent factors associated with companionship utilization. Conclusions: The finding of the study showed that the utilization of companionship during delivery was low. Permitting women to have a companion of choice during labor and childbirth can be a cost-effective intervention to improve the quality of maternity care, facing complications during delivery, having a desire to have companionship during delivery and primiparous women were more likely to utilize companionship. To improve this low utilization of companionship institutions and care providers should provide information about companionship during antenatal care attendance. Introduction: Self-medication is an important part of daily self-care, without the supervision of health professionals. It is commonly practiced by pregnant women all over the world and may result in maternal and fetal risks. Hence, this study assessed self-medication practices and associated factors among pregnant women attending Kemisie General Hospital. Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted using a structured questionnaire on pregnant women who were attending antenatal care at Kemisie General Hospital. A simple random sampling technique was employed to select the study participants. Descriptive and inferential statistics were computed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 20. Results: Among 223 pregnant women, 60 (26.9%; 95% CI: 20.9%, 32.9%) and 111 (48.9%; 95% CI: 43%, 58%) practiced self-medication on conventional and herbal medicine, respectively. The predictors of self-medication of conventional medicine among pregnant women were prior experience to the drug (P-value: 0.00, AOR=126.04, 95% CI: 32.55– 488.04) and no pervious history of abortion (P-value: 0.00, AOR=0.01,95% CI:0.002– 0.04), while college educational level (P-value: 0.00, AOR=13.45,95%, CI: 3.58– 50.5), history prior herbal medicine use (P-value: 0.00, AOR=9, 95% CI: 3.32– 24.39), Ruta chalepensis (P-value:0.001,AOR=193.7,95% CI:8.64– 4342.1) and Ocimum lamiifolium type of herb use (P-value: 0.004, AOR=12.72, 95% CI: 2.27– 71.38), and 5– 10km health facility distance (P-value:0.022, AOR=0.1, 95% CI: 0.01– 0.73) were predictors for self-medication practice of herbal medicines among pregnant women. Conclusion: Nearly one-third and two-third of pregnant women practiced self-medication on conventional and herbal medicine, respectively. Prior experience to the drug and no previous history of abortion associated with self-medication of conventional medicine, while college educational level, history prior herbal medicine use, Ruta chalepensis and, Ocimum lamiifolium type of herb use, and 5– 10km distance were predictors for self-medication practice of herbal medicines. Background. Urinary tract infection is one of the most common health problems worldwide, afflicting many women in reproductive age, especially in developing countries. Increased risk of infection has been attributed to pregnancy and antimicrobial resistance. Objective. To compare the prevalence, antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of the bacteria and associated factors of urinary tract infections among pregnant and nonpregnant women attending public health facilities, Harar, Eastern Ethiopia. Methods. A health facility-based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among 651 randomly selected women from public health facilities, Harar, Eastern Ethiopia, between February 2017 and December 2017. Pertinent data were collected through a face-to-face interview using a structured questionnaire. The midstream urine specimen was collected and cultured on cysteine-lactose-electrolyte-deficient agar and blood agar. Pure isolates were tested against the ten most prescribed antimicrobials using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. Data were entered and analysed using Statistical Program for Social Sciences version 21. A p value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results. The overall prevalence of significant bacteriuria was 23% (95% CI: 13.6, 26.8). The higher proportion of bacteria were isolated from pregnant women (14.1%) compared to nonpregnant women (8.9%). Escherichia coli (28.8%) and Streptococcus aureus (14.3%) were the most common isolates. E. coli was resistant to amoxicillin (83.3%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (78.6%), and ciprofloxacin (81%), whereas S. aureus was resistant to chloramphenicol (81%), erythromycin (81%), and amoxicillin (76.2%). Current symptoms, and history of catheterization increase the likelihood of urinary tract infections. Conclusion. Pregnant women were more likely infected with bacterial pathogens than nonpregnant women. Current symptoms, and catheterization increase the odds of urinary tract infections. More than half of the isolates were resistant to the commonly prescribed antimicrobials. Background. Knowledge of essential newborn care and proper practice is important for the survival, growth, and development of a newborn. In spite of its essentiality, most health-care professionals do not know and follow the World Health Organization recommendation. Therefore, this study is aimed at assessing knowledge of essential newborn care and associated factors among nurses and midwives working in maternal health case team at public health facilities of Wolaita Zone, Ethiopia, 2019. Methods. Institution-based cross-sectional study design was conducted from March to April 2019. Data were collected by using pretested questionnaire, and 36 public health facilities were selected after stratifying them based on their level of service and number of nurses and midwives working in maternal health-care team. All 218 nurses and midwives who were working in the delivery unit from selected facilities were included in the study. The collected data were entered into Epi data 3.02 and exported to statistical software for social sciences version 22 for analysis. Descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate analyses were done. Statistical significance of variables was declared as a p value < 0.05 , and strength of association was adjusted odds ratio at 95% confidence interval in the final model. Result. A total of 218 nurses and midwives were participated in the study. Among them, 57.9% of participants had good knowledge of essential newborn care. The type of profession (AOR = 5.79 , [2.47, 13.58]), educational level (AOR = 3.26 , [1.42, 7.52]), interest to work in delivery room (AOR = 4.85 , [1.89, 12.42]), and presence of guidelines (AOR = 2.29 , [1.18, 4.45]) were the factors significantly associated with having knowledge of essential newborn care. Conclusion and Recommendation. The nurses and midwives had poor knowledge of some components of essential newborn care in the study area. Bachelor level of study, interest to work in delivery room, and being a midwife were the factors independently associated with knowledge of essential newborn care among nurses and midwives. Therefore, the head of labor ward and institution, zonal and woreda health units, and nongovernmental organizations who are working on maternal and child health should work on providing continuous education, providing incentives and motivators to improve interest to work in delivery unit, and providing guidelines in the unit. Background: Mother to child transmission is responsible for 90% of child infection with human immune deficiency virus (HIV). Dual contraceptive use is one of the best actions to prevent mother's human immune deficiency virus transmission to her child and partner. This study aimed at assessing the prevalence and factors associated with dual contraceptive use among sexually active women on antiretroviral therapy in Gondar City, northwest, Ethiopia.Methods: An institution based cross sectional study was conducted in Gondar City public health facilities from December 1 to 31, 2018. Systematic random sampling technique was utilized to include 563 study participants. Data were collected by interview using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive analysis was made to compute mean, median and proportion. Finally, multivariable logistic regression model was fitted to identify the factors associated with dual contraceptive method utilization. Analysis was performed by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 20.Results: The overall prevalence of dual contraceptive method utilization among sexually active women on antiretroviral therapy was 28.8% (95% CI: 24.9, 32.7). Women aged 35-49 years (Adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 6.99; 95% CI: 3.11, 15.71)), who lived in urban areas (AOR: 4.81; 95% CI: 2.04, 11.31), attended secondary and above education (AOR: 4.43; 95% CI: 1.92, 10.22), and disclosed HIV status to sexual partners (AOR: 9.84; 95% CI: 3.48, 27.81) were more likely to use dual contraceptive method.Conclusion: In this study, the proportion of women who utilized dual contraceptive method was low. Age, place of residence, educational status and disclosure of HIV status were factors associated with dual contraceptive use. Therefore, providing education about the advantages of disclosing HIV status to sexual partners and strengthening of counseling about the advantages of dual contraceptive use will be helpful in enhancing the use of dual contraceptive method among sexually active women on antiretroviral therapy. The main aim of this research is to investigate the socio economic impacts of villagization; in the western Ethiopia . In order to come up with intended aim of the study descriptive survey research design and mixed research approach was employed. The study used questionnaires, interviews, document reviewing and FGD for data collection. Around one hundred sixty eight sample respondents were selected and determined by using Yemane formula. The research intends to identify the socio-economic impacts of villagization on the host communities, environment and socio-economic aspects of the people who dwell around villagization site. Both qualitative and quantitative methods of data analysis supported by statistical package for social science were used. The best thing about the life of villagers was agriculture since people had fertile lands. The result portrayed that program was came into ground voluntarily and based on the agreement of the villagers and host communities. The results also reveal that the villagized rural communities were highly affected by communicable and non-communicable diseases. Finally, the researcher recommended the government, health institution and villagers and host community should support the dislocated community as they will adapt to the new villagization site. Background: About one-third of the world's population lack access to essential medicines and this is further compounded by inappropriate prescription, dispensing, sale and use of the available medicines. The objective of the study was to assess the patterns of medicine use among health facilities in eastern Ethiopia using World Health Organization's Prescribing, Patient Care and Health facility indicators.Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out in eight randomly selected health centers and data were collected retrospectively as well as prospectively. Prescribing indicators were assessed retrospectively using 636 prescriptions selected by systematic random sampling technique among prescriptions filled between September 2013 and September 2014. Patient care indicators were assessed prospectively by interviewing 708 patients from the health facilities. Health facilities were assessed through observation. Data were entered and analyzed using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences version 20. P-value less than 0.05 at 95% confidence interval considered for significance of relationships for associations in statistical tests.Results: The average number of medicines per prescription was 2.2 with standard deviation of 0.8. The proportion of medicines prescribed by generic name was 97 and 92% of the prescribed medicines were included in List of Essential Medicines for Ethiopia, Prescriptions containing antibiotics and injections constituted (82.5 and 11.2%) respectively. Of the total of 1426 medicines prescribed, 49.6% were antibiotics, with amoxicillin (33.3%) and co-trimoxazole (16.0%) being the most commonly prescribed agents. The average consultation and dispensing times were 5.6 and 2.7 min, respectively. Among the medicines dispensed, 64.0% were adequately labeled and the proportion of patients with adequate knowledge about medicines was 69%.Conclusion: The prescribing and dispensing practices in the health facilities are fairly good and are not that far from the standard WHO requirements. However, there is a need to do more on some issues, including prescribing practice of antibiotics, average number of medicines per prescription, and patients' dosage form knowledge. Background: Road Traffic Accidents have become an enormous global public health problem killing approximately 1.25 million people and injuring 20 to 50 million others yearly. It is the 10th leading cause of death universally and the number one cause of mortality of the young population between the ages of 5 and 29. Only few studies have been conducted on the severity of road traffic injuries in Ethiopia hence the need for the study. Objective: To assess injury severity level and associated factors among road traffic accident victims. Methods: A cross-sectional study of patients involved in road traffic accident and attended Tirunesh Beijing hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Victims were consecutively recruited until sample size (164) attained during the study period. Data collectors administered a structured questionnaire. The collected data was then entered and cleaned using Epi info and exported to IBM SPSS for statistical analysis. Independent factors associated with injury severity were assessed using bivariate and multivariate logistic regression. Results: A total of 164 road traffic injury victims were included to the study. Prevalence of severe injury accounted for 36.6% of cases. “can read and write” educational status OR 35.194(95% CI; 3.325–372.539), sustaining multiple injury OR 18.400(95% CI; 5.402–62.671), sustaining multiple injury type OR 6.955(95% CI; 1.716–28.185) and being transported by ambulance from the scene of accident OR 13.800(95% CI; 1.481–128.635) were the explanatory variables found to have a statistically significant association with severe injury. Conclusion: This study showed road traffic accident is predominantly affecting the economically active, male young population. Not a single victim received pre-hospital care, majority were extracted by bystanders and most used commercial vehicle to be transported to a health institution reflecting the need for improvements in pre-hospital emergency services and socio-economic related infrastructures. Objectives: This study aimed to measure the prevalence and associated factors of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) among women living with and without HIV in Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study design was used to interview the 816 women between 18–49 years of age (408 = HIV positive, 408 = HIV negative). Using a multistage sampling technique, participants were recruited from nine health facilities based on probability proportional to the number of clients. After data entry (EpiData version 4.4.2.0) the data were exported to STATA/SE 15 software. Binary and multivariable logistic regression analysis were undertaken and the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) are presented. Results: The lifetime prevalence of IPV among all women was 59.7%, [95% CI: 56.31%-63.05%]. IPV was slightly higher among women living with HIV, 250(61.3%), than those who were HIV negative, 238(58.1%). Lifetime prevalence of emotional violence 413(50.6%), physical violence 349(42.8%), sexual violence 219(26.8%), and controlling behaviours by husbands/partners 489(59.9%) were reported. Associations were found between IPV and controlling behaviour of husband/partner [AOR = 8.13; 95% CI: 4.93–13.42],income [AOR = 3.97; 95% CI:1.81–8.72], bride price payment [AOR = 3.46; 95% CI:1.74–6.87], women’s decision to refuse sex [AOR = 2.99; 95% CI: 1.39–6.41],age group of women [AOR = 2.86; 95% CI:1.67–4.90], partner’s family choosing wife [AOR = 2.83; 95% CI:1.70–4.69], alcohol consumption by partner [AOR = 2.36;95% CI:1.36–4.10], number of sexual partners [AOR = 2.35; 95% CI:1.36–4.09], and if partner ever physically fought with another man [AOR = 1.83; 95% CI:1.05–3.19]. Conclusions: There is a high prevalence of IPV against women both living with and without HIV. Policy priorities should therefore involve males in programs of gender-based violence prevention in order to change their violent behaviour, and interventions are required to improve the economic status of women. Background: Tuberculosis (TB), a bacterial infectious disease, continues to be a public health concern in many developing countries. However, lack of data concerning the public health burden and potential risk factors for the disease hampers control programs in target areas. Therefore, the aims of present study were to determine the prevalence of TB and genetic diversity of M. tuberculosis isolates from individuals visiting health facilities in South Gondar Zone, northwest Ethiopia. Methods: A cross-sectonal study was conducted between March 2015 and April 2017. Bacteriological examination, region of difference (RD) 9 based polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and spoligotyping were used. Results: The overall prevalence of all smear positive TB was 6.3% (186/2953). Extra pulmonary TB (EPTB) was clinically characterized in about 62.4% (116/186) TB-positive cases. Some demographic characteristics, such as patients' origin (districts where patients were recruited) [patients’ origin (chi-square (χ2) value; 62.8,p<0.001) were found to be significantly associated risk factors for the occurrence of TB in the study area. All the mycobacterial isolates were found to be M. tuberculosis. Among the 35 different spoligotype patterns identified, 22 patterns were shared types.The three dominantly identified families were T, CAS and Manu, each consisting of 46.9%, 24.0% and 10.4% of the isolates, respectively. Conclusion: The present study revealed that TB continues to be a public health problem in South Gondar Zone which suggests a need of implementing effective disease control strategies. Background: Intimate partner violence is a thoughtful public health concern and human rights violation towards pregnant women for it has a significant negative health effect on the life of both the mother and her fetus. However, there is a scanty of information about the extent of intimate partner violence during pregnancy in Ethiopia, particularly in the study area. Therefore, the current study was conducted to determine the prevalence of intimate partner violence among pregnant women attending antenatal care and identify associated factors that cause it. Methods: An institution based cross-sectional study was conducted on 409 pregnant women who were attending antenatal care service in Debre Markos town from March 17, 2018 –April 28, 2018. Systematic random sampling technique was used to select study participants. A pre-tested structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. Bivariable and Multivariable logistic regression models were done. Adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence interval was used to identify factors associated with intimate partner violence during pregnancy. Results: The prevalence of intimate partner violence during current pregnancy was found to be 41.1% (95% confidence interval (CI): 36.0–46.0). Of this, the prevalence of psychological, physical, and sexual violence was 29.1%, 21%, 19.8% respectively. Lower educational status of partners (AOR = 3.26, 95%CI: 1.45–7.36), rural residency (AOR = 4.04, 95%CI: 1.17–13.93), frequent alcohol abuse by partner (AOR = 4.79, 95% CI: 2.08–11.04), early initiation of antenatal care (AOR = 0.44, 95% CI: 0.24–0.81), the age of women between 17–26 years (Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 0.21, 95%CI: 0.09–0.49),choice of partner by the women only (AOR = 3.26,95% CI:1.24–8.57) were statistically significant factors associated with intimate partner violence towards pregnant women. Conclusions: In this study, the prevalence of intimate partner violence during pregnancy is found to be high. Despite the significant reductions seen in under-5 child mortality in Ethiopia over the last two decades, more than 10,000 children still die each year in Tigray Region alone, of whom 75% die from preventable diseases. Using an equity lens, this study aimed to investigate the social determinants of child health in one particularly vulnerable district as a means of informing the health policy decision-making process. An exploratory qualitative study design was adopted, combining focus group discussions and qualitative interviews. Seven Focus Group Discussions with mothers of young children, and 21 qualitative interviews with health workers were conducted in Wolkayit district in May-June 2015. Data were subjected to thematic analysis. Mothers’ knowledge regarding the major causes of child mortality appeared to be good, and they also knew about and trusted the available child health interventions. However, utilization and practice of these interventions was limited by a range of issues, including cultural factors, financial shortages, limited female autonomy on financial resources, seasonal mobility, and inaccessible or unaffordable health services. Our findings pointed to the importance of a multi-sectoral strategy to improve child health equity and reduce under-5 mortality in Wolkayit. Recommendations include further decentralizing child health services to local-level Health Posts, and increasing the number of Health Facilities based on local topography and living conditions. Introduction: Despite the government’s efforts to decentralize and expand health institutions to promote facility-based child delivery, home delivery and maternal mortality are still widespread problems in Ethiopia. Most mothers continue to give birth at home. This study aims at identifying the socio-cultural practices, perceived benefit or need, and accessibility factors influencing women’s choice of health facilities for delivery services in Gida Ayana Woreda, western Ethiopia. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey to assess women’s use of delivery care services in Gida Ayana Woreda, from November 2016 to January 2017; 459 women who were selected randomly participated in the study. We evaluated the socio-cultural, perceived benefit or need, and economic and physical accessibility factors in women’s choice of delivery care and used adjusted logistic regression analysis to examine significant predictors of delivery site use decisions. Results: Over half (56.6%) of the women self-reported using institutional delivery care; 80.9% gave birth at a health center. A socio-cultural variable, maternal education, significantly influenced women’s choice of health facility for delivery care services (AOR 3.4; 95% CI 2.0–5.9). Mothers’ knowledge level of obstetric complications and experience of complications during the last birth were the two perceived benefits or need factors associated with higher odds of receiving delivery care from decentralized local facilities. Utilization of health centers for maternal delivery care was significantly higher than of health posts (AOR 5.0; 95% CI 2.4–10.2). Availability of motorized transportation during labor to nearby delivery site was a significant predictor of institutional delivery. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the under-utilization of decentralized health facilities for maternal delivery care services in Gida Ayana Woreda, which was significantly influenced by socio-cultural, perceived need, and accessibility factors of women during childbirth. Background: Community-based health insurance (CBHI) scheme is an emerging strategy for providing financial protection against health-related poverty. It is being piloted in the Sheko district, but community satisfaction with the scheme has not yet studied. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the level of household’s satisfaction to CBHI scheme and associated factors in a piloted Sheko district; southwest Ethiopia. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Sheko district from March to April 2018. Data was collected on 528 households by using simple random sampling method. Trained data collectors gathered the data using a pre-tested and structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed. To determine the independent predictors of household’s satisfaction to CBHI, a cut point of p values < 0.05 were used. Results: This study showed that more than half (54.7%) of the households were satisfied with the CBHI scheme. Satisfaction to CBHI was positively associated with adequate knowledge of CBHI benefit packages (AOR = 2.29, 95% CI = 1.55–3.38), type of health facility visit (AOR = 1.93, 95% CI = 1.09–3.39), laboratory service provision (AOR = 2.07, 95% CI = 1.15–373) and length of enrollment (AOR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.01–2.32). Conclusions: Household’s satisfaction to CBHI scheme was moderate. Modifiable factors, including adequate knowledge of CBHI benefit packages, type of health facility visit, laboratory service provision, and length of enrollment were independent determinants of satisfaction. In order to augment enrollee’s satisfaction to CBHI, efforts should be given to improving their knowledge of CBHI benefit packages through education and information campaigns. Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women is a major public health concern in low income countries. Violence against pregnant women has adverse effects on maternal and newborn outcomes. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of intimate partner violence in Southeast Ethiopia pregnant women. Methods: Institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted on pregnant women who were attending antenatal care (ANC) in Bale Zone health institution during study period. Face to face interviews were conducted using a pre-tested structured questionnaire. Data related to socio-demographic characteristic, pregnancy and reproductive history, intimate partner behavior and IPV encountered during recent pregnancy was gathered for this study. Descriptive analysis and logistic regression were used for the data analysis. Odds ratio with 95% CI was computed to determine the presence and strength of associated factors with IPV. Results: A total of 612 pregnant women participated in the study. Of these, 361 (59.0%) pregnant women faced at least one type of IPV during the recent pregnancy. Physical violence (20.3%), sexual violence (36.3%), psychological/emotional violence (33.0), controlling behavior violence (30.4%) and economic violence (27.0) were the type of IPV encountered by participants. An intimate partners who were drank alcohol [AOR = 2.9; 95% CI: (1.5–5.4)], partners who were chewed Khat [AOR = 1.7; 95% CI: (1.1–2.6)], partners who were smoked cigarette [AOR = 2.6; 95% CI: (1.4–4.9)], partners who had aggressive behavior [AOR = 2.8; 95% CI: (1.7–4.6)], having partner age ≥30 year old [AOR = 1.8; 95% CI: (1.2–2.9)], unwanted pregnancy [AOR = 3.3; 95% CI: (1.9–5.5)] and history of adverse pregnancy outcome [AOR = 2.1; 95% CI: (1.2–3.6)] that were the factors that significantly associated with IPV of the pregnant women. Conclusion: The prevalence of IPV during pregnancy was high among the study participants. Intimate partners’ use of substance, intimate partners’ aggressive behavior, older intimate partners, unwanted pregnancy and history of adverse birth outcome were identified as associated factors for IPV. IPV needs to be considered during ANC service and integrated into the sexual and reproductive health education. Community-based interventions should be advocated as a way of health promotion. Background: Achieving fair access to healthcare and improving population health are crucial in all settings. Properly staffed and fairly distributed primary health care (PHC) facilities are prerequisites to ensure accessible healthcare services. Nevertheless, availability and accessibility issues are common public health concerns, especially in under-resourced countries including Ethiopia. Measuring inequalities in accessibility of healthcare resources guide policy decisions to improve PHC services and ultimately achieving universal health coverage (UHC). Purpose: To assess availability and measure magnitude and trend of inequalities in accessibility of health centre-based PHC resources in Ethiopia during 2015 to 2017. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional population-based analysis of district-level data collected from 16th December 2017 until 24th May 2018. Afar, Dire-Dawa, and Tigray regions were purposefully included in the study to represent the four pastoralist/semi-pastoralist, three urban and four agrarian regions in Ethiopia, respectively. We used ratios, different inequality indices and Gini decomposition techniques to characterise the inequalities. Results: In 2017, median of health centres (HCs) per 15,000 inhabitants and their Gini indices (GIs) for Afar, Dire-Dawa, and Tigray were 0.781, 0.566, 0.591 vs. 0.237, 0.280, 0.216 respectively. Median overall skilled health workers (SHWs) per 10,000 inhabitants were 5.250, 7.539, and 6.246, respectively. These accounted for 11.80%, 16.94% and 14.04% of the WHO target of 44.5 to achieve SDGs. The corresponding GIs for the regions were 0.347, 0.186 and 0.175. Despite a higher overall SHWs inequality in the urban districts of Tigray (GI = 0.301), only Tigray showed significant inequality reductions in GHE (p < 0.001) and in all categories of SHWs (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Our analysis provided a clear picture of availability and inequalities in PHC resources across three regions in Ethiopia. Background: While health care provider knowledge is a commonly used measure for process quality of care, evidence demonstrates that providers don’t always perform as much as they know. We describe this know-do gap for malaria care for sick children among providers in Ethiopia and examine what may predict this gap. Methods: We use a 2014 nationally-representative survey of Ethiopian providers that includes clinical knowledge vignettes of malaria care and observations of care provided to children in facilities. We compare knowledge and performance of assessment, treatment and counseling items and overall. We subtract performance scores from knowledge and use regression analysis to examine what facility and provider characteristics predict the gap. 512 providers that completed the malaria vignette and were observed providing care to sick children were included in the analysis. Results: Vignette and observed performance were both low, with providers on average scoring 39% and 34% respectively. The know-do gap for assessment was only 1%, while the gap for treatment and counseling items was 39%. Doctors had the largest gap between knowledge and performance. Only provider type and availability of key equipment significantly predicted the know-do gap. Conclusions: While both provider knowledge and performance in sick child care are poor, there is a gap between knowledge and performance particularly with regard to treatment and counseling. Background: Access to healthcare is an important public health concept and has been traditionally measured by using population level parameters, such as availability, distribution and proximity of the health facilities in relation to the population. However, client based factors such as their expectations, experiences and perceptions which impact their evaluations of health care access were not well studied and integrated into health policy frameworks and implementation programs. Objective: This study aimed to investigate factors associated with perceived access to HIV/AIDS Treatment and care services in Wolaita Zone, Ethiopia. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 492 people living with HIV, with 411 using ART and 81 using pre-ART services accessed at six public sector health facilities from November 2014 to March 2015. Data were analyzed using the ologit function of STATA. The variables explored consisted of socio-demographic and health characteristics, type of health facility, type of care, distance, waiting time, healthcare responsiveness, transportation convenience, satisfaction with service, quality of care, financial fairness, out of pocket expenses and HIV disclosure. Results: Of the 492 participants, 294 (59.8%) were females and 198 (40.2%) were males, with a mean age of 38.8 years. 23.0% and 12.2% believed they had ‘good’ or ‘very good’ access respectively, and 64.8% indicated lower ratings. In the multivariate analysis, distance from the health facility, type of care, HIV clinical stage, out of pocket expenses, employment status, type of care, HIV disclosure and perceived transportation score were not associated with the perceived access (PA). With a unit increment in satisfaction, perceived quality of care, health system responsiveness, transportation convenience and perceived financial fairness scores, the odds of providing higher rating of PA increased by 29.0% (p<0.001), 6.0%(p<0.01), 100.0% (p<0.001), 9.0% (p<0.05) and 6.0% (p<0.05) respectively. Conclusion: Perceived quality of care, health system responsiveness, perceived financial fairness, transportation convenience and satisfaction with services were correlates of perceived access and affected healthcare performance. Background: Health management information system (HMIS) is a system whereby health data are recorded, stored, retrieved and processed to improve decision-making. HMIS data quality should be monitored routinely as production of high quality statistics depends on assessment of data quality and actions taken to improve it. Thus, this study assessed accuracy of the routine HMIS data.Methods: Facility based cross-sectional study was conducted in Southern Nations Nationalities and People's region in 2017. Document review was done in 163 facilities of different levels. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) for windows version 20 was used to perform data analysis. Data accuracy was presented in terms of mean and standard deviation of data verification factor.Results: Though inaccuracy was noted for all data elements, 96.9 and 84.7% of facilities reported institutional maternal death and skilled birth attendance within acceptable range respectively while confirmed malaria (45.4%), antenatal care fourth visit (46.6%), postnatal care (55.2%), fully immunized (55.8%), severe acute malnutrition (54.6%) and total malaria (50.3%) were reported accurately only by about half of facilities. Antenatal care fourth visit was over reported by 24% while total malaria was under reported by 28%. Reasons for variations included technical, behavioral and organizational factors.Conclusions: Majority of facilities over reported services while under reporting diseases. Data quality should be monitored routinely against data quality parameters quantitatively and/or qualitatively to catch-up country's information revolution agenda. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background. Despite the enormous advantages of early pregnancy-related problem diagnosis and therapy during prenatal care visits, not all pregnant women begin antenatal care at the proper time. Thus, this study aims to identify factors associated with missed opportunities for antenatal care service utilization among reproductive-age women in Eastern Ethiopia. Methods. A mixed methods study design (quantitative and qualitative) was conducted in Grawa, Meta, and Haramaya woredas from September 5 to December 5, 2019. The quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. A multivariable logistic regression analysis model was used to identify the predictors. Statistical software programs based on ATLAS.ti version 8.2 was were used to conduct the thematic analysis of the qualitative data. Results. Overall, missed opportunities for antenatal care were 15.4% of 95% (12.1, 19.1%). Factors such as maternal age being 15–24 (AOR = 6.9 , 95% CI: 2.89–8.81); having a college education (AOR = 0.02 , 95% CI: 0.001, 0.42), elementary (AOR = 0.05 , 95% CI: 0.002, 0.98), and secondary education (AOR = 0.04 , 95% CI: 0.001, 0.88); having five and more parity (AOR = 0.08 , 95% CI: 0.01, 0.75); three visits (AOR = 0.10 , 95% CI: 0.02, 0.71); those in the first trimester (AOR = 0.02 , 95% CI: 0.001, 0.35) and the second trimester (AOR = 0.01 , 95% CI: 0.001, 0.26); and get information from a health facility (AOR =0.09, 95% CI: 0.01, 0.67) and traditional birth attendance (AOR = 0.02 , 95% CI: 0.001, 0.74) were factors statistically associated with outcome variables. Conclusions. According to this report, relatively high proportions of pregnant women experienced missed opportunities in antenatal care follow-up. Factors such as maternal age, education, parity, frequency, timing, and media access were statistically significantly correlated with missed antenatal care follow-up. Therefore, all stakeholders should emphasize advocating for and enhancing the benefits of antenatal care; this in turn plays a crucial role in increasing the follow-up of clients for these crucial services. Introduction: Community-based health insurance schemes are becoming increasingly recognized as a potential strategy to achieve universal health coverage in developing countries. Ethiopia has implemented community-based health insurance in piloted regions of the country. The scheme aims to improve the utilization of healthcare services by removing financial barriers. There is a dearth of literature regarding the effect of the insurance scheme on the utilization of healthcare services. Methods: A community-based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted in the south Gondar Zone. Six hundred fifty-eight participants were selected using a systematic random sampling method. Data were entered into EPI data version 4.4.1 and exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Binary logistic regression was used to measure the association of factors with the outcome variable. The result of the final model was expressed in terms of Adjusted Odd Ratios (AOR) and 95% CI. Result: Two hundred twenty-three (67.8%) and 111 (33.7%) of the respondents reported that their family members went to health institutions within three months among CBHI users and non-users respectively. The presence of under-five children (AOR = 2, 95% CI = 1.6–2.4), CBHI scheme membership times (AOR = 3, 95% CI = 2.6–3.4), household wealth index rich (AOR = 4, 95% CI = 2.3–6.3), household wealth index medium (AOR = 3, 95% CI = 1.8–5.8) and presence of chronic illness (AOR = 0.5, 95% CI = 0.2–0.8) was associated with health care service utilization. Households who were enrolled in CBHI were more likely to use healthcare services than households who were not enrolled. Conclusion and recommendation: Households who were enrolled in CBHI were more likely to use healthcare services than households who were not enrolled. Background: Countries in malaria endemic regions are determinedly making an effort to achieve the global malaria elimination goals. In Ethiopia, too, all concerned bodies have given attention to this mission as one of their priority areas so that malaria would be eradicated from the country. Despite the success stories from some areas in the country, however, malaria is still a major public health concern in most parts of Ethiopia. Therefore, this study is aimed at analysing the changing malaria trend and assessing the impact of malaria control efforts in one of the malaria endemic regions of Ethiopia. Methods: Five years data on clinical malaria cases diagnosed and treated at all health facilities (including 28 Health Centres, 105 Health Posts and 2 Hospitals) in Oromia Special zone, Amhara Regional State, Ethiopia, were reviewed for the period from June 2014 to June 2019. Data on different interventional activities undertaken in the zone during the specified period were obtained from the Regional Health Bureau. Results: The cumulative malaria positivity rate documented in the zone was 12.5% (n = 65,463/524,722). Plasmodium falciparum infection was the dominant malaria aetiology and accounted for 78.9% (n = 51,679). The age group with the highest malaria burden was found to be those aged above 15 years (54.14%, n = 35,443/65,463). The malaria trend showed a sharp decreasing pattern from 19.33% (in 2015) to 5.65% (in 2018), although insignificant increment was recorded in 2019 (8.53%). Distribution of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) were undertaken in the zone once a year only for two years, specifically in 2014 and 2017. In 2014, a single LLIN was distributed per head of households, which was not sufficient for a family size of more than one family member. Number of houses sprayed with indoor residual spray in 2014 and 2017 were 33,314 and 32,184 houses, respectively, leading to the assumption that, 151,444 (25.9%) and 141,641 (24.2%) population were protected in year 2014 and 2017, respectively. The analysis has shown that P. falciparum positivity rate was significantly decreased following the interventional activities by 3.3% (p = 0.009), but interventional efforts did not appear to have significant effect on vivax malaria, as positivity rate of this parasite increased by 1.49% (p = 0.0218). Conclusion: Malaria burden has shown a decreasing pattern in the study area, although the pattern was not consistent throughout all the years and across the districts in the study area. Therefore, unremitting surveillance along implementation of interventional efforts should be considered taking into account the unique features of Plasmodium species, population dynamics in the zone, seasonality, and malaria history at different districts of the zone should be in place to achieve the envisaged national malaria elimination goal by 2030. Background: Ethiopia is one of the scarce rare African countries where Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum co-exist. There has been no attempt to derive a robust prevalence estimate of P. vivax in the country although a clear understanding of the epidemiology of this parasite is essential for informed decisions. This systematic review and meta-analysis, therefore, is aimed to synthesize the available evidences on the distribution of P. vivax infection by different locations/regions, study years, eco-epidemiological zones, and study settings in Ethiopia. Methods: This study was conducted in accordance with Preferred Reposting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies conducted and published over the last two decades (2000 to 2020) that reported an estimate of P. vivax prevalence in Ethiopia were included. The Cochrane Q (χ2) and the I2 tests were used to assess heterogeneity, and the funnel plot and Egger's test were used to examine publication bias. A p-value of the χ2 test <0.05 and an I2 value >75% were considered presence of considerable heterogeneity. Random effect models were used to obtain pooled estimate of P. vivax infection prevalence. This study is registered with PROSPERO (International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews): ID CRD42020201761. Results: We screened 4,932 records and included 79 studies that enrolled 1,676,659 confirmed malaria cases, from which 548,214 (32.69%) were P. vivax infections and 1,116,581 (66.59%) were due to P. falciparum. The rest (11,864 or 0.7%) were due to mixed infections. The pooled estimate of P. vivax prevalence rate was 8.93% (95% CI: 7.98–9.88%) with significant heterogeneity (I2 = 100%, p<0.0001). Regional differences showed significant effects (p<0.0001, and I2 = 99.4%) on the pooled prevalence of P. vivax, while study years (before and after the scaling up of interventional activities) did not show significant differences (p = 0.9, I2 = 0%). Eco-epidemiological zones considered in the analysis did show a significant statistical effect (p<0.001, I2 = 78.5%) on the overall pooled estimate prevalence. Also, the study setting showed significant differences (p = 0.001, and I2 = 90.3%) on the overall prevalence, where significant reduction of P. vivax prevalence (4.67%, 95%CI: 1.41–7.93%, p<0.0001) was observed in studies conducted at the community level. The studies included in the review demonstrated lack of publication bias qualitatively (symmetrical funnel plot) and quantitatively [Egger's test (coefficient) = -2.97, 95% CI: -15.06–9.13, p = 0.62]. Conclusion: The estimated prevalence of P. vivax malaria in Ethiopia was 8.93% with P. vivax prevailing in the central west region of Ethiopia, but steadily extending to the western part of the country. Its distribution across the nation varies according to geographical location, study setting and study years. Author summary: Plasmodium vivax is the most widely distributed parasite worldwide. But it is a rare malaria parasite in Africa, except in the eastern part of the region. Ethiopia is one of the few countries in Africa where the two principal human malaria parasite, P. falciparum and P. vivax co-exist. Finding of the current review showed that a pooled estimate prevalence of P. vivax was 8.93% with significant heterogeneity. The prevalence was varied across different regions in the country, eco-epidemiological zones and study settings, where the highest prevalence was documented in the South Nations and Nationalities Peoples' Region, highlands at an altitude of 2000-2500masl and at health facilities, respectively, while study years (before and after the scaling up of malaria interventional activities) didn't show any effect on the pooled estimate prevalence of P. vivax. Overall, P. vivax showed high prevalence in the western central region of the country, but gradually spreading to the far-western part, previously assumed to be free of malaria. The spread of malaria in general and P. vivax in particular to malaria free regions could have far reaching consequences and calls for periodic surveillance of the disease to curb the potential public health risks. Background: In rural areas of Ethiopia, 57% of births occur at home without the assistance of skilled birth attendants, geographical inaccessibility being one of the main factors that hinder skilled birth attendance. Establishment of maternity waiting homes (MWH) is part of a strategy to improve access to skilled care by bringing pregnant women physically close to health facilities. This study assessed barriers to MWHs in Arba Minch Zuria District, Southern Ethiopia. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was undertaken from February 01 to 28, 2019. Study participants were selected by computer-generated random numbers from a list of women who gave birth from 2017 to 2018 in Arba Minch Health and Demographic Surveillance System site. Data were collected using a pre-tested and interviewer-administered questionnaire. Stata software version-15 was used for data management and analysis, and variables with p-values ≤ 0.2 in bivariate analysis were considered for multivariable logistic regression analysis. Level of statistical significance was declared at a p-value < 0.05. Qualitative data were analyzed manually based on thematic areas. Results: MWH utilization was found to be 8.4%. Wealth index (lowest wealth quintile aOR 7.3; 95% CI 1.2, 42), decisions made jointly with male partners (husbands) for obstetric emergencies (aOR 3.6; 95% CI 1.0, 12), birth preparedness plan practice (aOR 6.5; 95% CI 2.3, 18.2), complications in previous childbirth (aOR 3; 95% 1.0, 9), history of previous institutional childbirth (aOR 12; 95% CI 3.8, 40), residence in areas within two hours walking distance to the nearest health facility (aOR 3.3; 95% CI: 1.4, 7.7), and ease of access to transport in obstetric emergencies (aOR 8.8; 95% CI: 3.9, 19) were factors that showed significant associations with MWH utilization. Conclusions: A low proportion of women has ever used MWHs in the study area. To increase MWH utilization, promoting birth preparedness practices, incorporating MWH as part of a personalized birth plan, improving access to health institutions for women living far away and upgrading existing MWHs are highly recommended. Background: Despite progress recently, Ethiopia remains one of the largest contributors to the global burden of maternal deaths. As facility-based childbirth and skilled-birth attendant at birth reduces maternal morbidity and mortality, the country has been implementing expansions in infrastructure during the past decades. Whether this phenomenal expansion in infrastructure and improvement in coverage of healthcare services matched with quality of maternal health service is not well investigated. This study assessed the quality of intrapartum care experienced by mothers at health centers in Jabi Tehinan district, North West Ethiopia.Method: An institution-linked community-based cross-sectional study was carried out from August to September 2018 to assess the quality of intrapartum care experienced by mothers during facility deliveries. Quantitative data were collected from 378 women who had uncomplicated births at health centers within 6 months preceding the survey and interviews were held with 25 women. The quantitative data were entered into SPSS for Windows versions 23 for analyses. Qualitative data were transcribed verbatim and data were used to substantiate the quantitative data.Result: The results indicated that 13% of mothers experienced good quality of intrapartum care services. About 49, 45, 31, and 25% of mothers respectively experienced good quality of human and physical resources; respect, dignity, and equity; emotional support; and cognition. Only 2% of mothers experienced good quality of services on the four dimensions and 15% did not experience good quality of services on neither of the dimensions. Mothers from rural areas and mothers who did not use ANC services for recent born children were found more likely to experience good quality of intrapartum care. Informants discussed poor quality of labor environment, lack of privacy, and poor client-provider communications at health facilities.Conclusion: The results indicated that the quality of intrapartum care experienced by mothers were minimal. The findings highlighted that efforts exerted to increase infrastructure and improve maternal health service coverage did not ensure quality maternal health services. Therefore, to increase the uptake of facility births and improved maternal health outcomes, stakeholders should make the health system humane, respectful, equitable, and responsive to mothers' concerns. Background: As a signatory of the Millennium Development Goals, Ethiopia has made significant achievements towards meeting the maternal mortality related goals since 1990. Despite that, the country is still experiencing unacceptably high maternal mortality rates, and challenges to improving the coverage and utilisation of health facility delivery services which represent a key strategy to combat maternal mortality. Currently, there is limited evidence on the factors associated with health facility delivery in Ethiopia. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the correlates of facility delivery among urban and rural women in Ethiopia. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study based on data from the 2011 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey. Participants were 7540 women aged between 15 and 49 years with a history of at least one birth. The outcome variable was place of delivery. Data were analyzed using bivariate and multivariable regression techniques. Results: The overall prevalence of health facility delivery was 17.1% (1447/7540). In the multivariable regression analysis, education, wealth status, frequency of antenatal care visits and mother's age at first birth were found to be significantly associated with women's choice of place of delivery. Among urban women, those who had primary and secondary/higher level education had increased odds of delivering at a health facility compared with those without formal education. Those who were from the richest households had higher odds of delivering at a health facility compared with those in the lowest class. In urban and rural areas, compared with those who had no ANC visits, those who had at least four visits also had increased odds of delivering at a health facility. In the urban areas, those who were over 18 years old at their first childbirth had significantly higher odds of choosing to deliver at a health facility. Conclusion: Findings show that the prevalence of healthy facility delivery in Ethiopia is remarkably low. Addressing the sociodemographic and wealth inequities can help promote the utilisation of facility delivery in both urban and rural areas. Policy-makers should consider improving access to education as a strategy to meet maternal health related goals and treat education as a multipronged strategy.
