Purpose: The paper examines the effect of bank-specific, financial structure and macroeconomic factors on the profitability of banks in Asian economies during 1995–2017. Design/methodology/approach: It uses the data of 2,446 banks across 47 Asian countries between 1995 and 2017 (41,582 year observations). The static and dynamic panel generalized methods of moments (GMM) estimation techniques are applied. Findings: The results show that banks that are highly dependent on nontraditional activities have lower net interest revenue and net interest margin but higher return on assets, return on equity and profit before tax. Higher opportunity cost, capitalization, demand deposits and market risk result in a better bank profits. Furthermore, banks with higher loan exposure and growth have more profit. However, nonperforming loans have negative and significant impact on bank profitability. Asian banks do not suffer from diseconomies of scale and scope. The author also finds that banks located in countries with high gross domestic product, inflation rates and high rates of interest or in financially developed economies offer better profits. High credit to the private sector reduces the bank profitability. This study finds evidence to support the structure-conduct-performance (SCP) hypothesis. It also provides evidence that the impact of financial turmoil on the profitability of the Asian banking sector is negative and significant and has severely weakened the Asian banking system. Originality/value: As Asia has become an important economic area and the Asian topic has not earned enough discussions, this paper is the first to examine Asian banks with the latest and a wider range of panel data that cover 2,446 banks at 47 Asian countries over the period 1995–2017. The present study is among the first to address the influence of financial turmoil on bank profitability in this region. It also studies new variables, such as demand deposits, opportunity cost and off-balance sheet activities, which have not been examined in relation to bank profitability. Purpose: This study examines the relationship between working capital management and business performance. Design/methodology/approach: The relationship between the working capital management and business performance is examined using panel data analysis for a sample of EU-28 listed firms for the period from 2003 to 2012. To examine this relationship, an ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model is used to analyze the data obtained from the sample. The dependent variable consists of three measurements, namely return on asset (ROA), return on equity (ROE) and earnings before interest and taxes margin (EBITM), which are used as proxies for accounting-based measures of performance. Findings: The authors examined the aforementioned relationship during the 2008 financial crisis. The OLS regression analysis suggests that there is a negative relationship between gross working capital and business performance for code law countries. The results also show that liquidity measures estimated by current ratio have a statistically significant impact on business performance indicated by ROA for all EU countries. The 2008 financial crisis had a significantly negative impact on ROA. Additionally, the findings regarding financial inclusion show a negative relationship between gross working capital and business performance among EU and other performer countries. Practical implications: Overall, the empirical findings are consistent with Afrifa's (2016), who suggests that cash flow should increase investment in working capital to improve performance indicated by EBITM for old EU members. Originality/value: While many empirical studies investigate the relationship between working capital and firm profitability, most do not consider the impact of the 2008 financial crisis apart from Tsurate (2019). The authors examine whether legal origins are important determinants of working capital management policies and business performance. This study examines how the 2008 global financial crisis (GFC) influenced the way international strategic alliances (ISAs) impact firm performance. We divide our sample of Korean listed firms into pre-GFC and post-GFC period groups and construct a regression model using return on equity and return on assets as dependent variables. Our empirical results demonstrate that the impacts differ across ISA types and are subject to market conditions. In unstable market circumstances, the demand for ISAs through licensing increases substantially, indicating that licensing has a more positive impact on firm performance than joint ventures or R&D alliances have. Using stock returns of individual Chinese A shares as dependent variables, we confirm that the 2008 global financial crisis hit China through the demand channel and find that the four-trillion yuan stimulus package had a larger and more lasting effect on stimulating the real economy than on encouraging stock market speculation. The package, implemented with tremendous credit expansion in 2009 and 2010, is both effective and efficient in facilitating the financing of firms' working capital, but has weaker effects on the financing of investments. Long-term capital allocation is not efficient in that it goes to firms that idiosyncratically invested heavily before the financial crisis but not to those that are in need of capital for investment determined by industry features.
