Infrastructure development cannot take place without gravel, which is scarce in the North American Arctic. Conditioning where development can occur, the commodity has become the target of Indigenous actors seeking to secure land and resource bases and their material futures, too. In Alaska, decades of litigation pitting Indigenous surface versus subsurface corporate landholders has contested gravel's legal location. In Canada, contrastingly, Inuvialuit land claims negotiators successfully secured access to granular resources. In both locales, legal processes have resulted in certain Indigenous actors' accumulation of geologic power. Rooted in the subterranean, this power enables them to transform the surface of the Earth. Contributing to research on geologic power and political geology and drawing on fieldwork and a review of court cases, policy documents and reports, this article critiques how gravel has become an Arctic resource lucrative to local communities rather than global markets and a key source of Indigenous political and economic agency. Going forward, struggles over Indigenous rights may concern securing ownership over not only the land base, but the land column., (© 2023. The research is focused on the topographic modelling and mapping of the Aleutian Trench. The study area is situated in the Bering Sea, a marginal sea located northernmost of the Pacific Ocean, between Alaska and Kamchatka Peninsula. The geological setting of the region is characterized by the subduction of the oceanic Pacific Plate below the continental North American Plate. Other features include high seismic activity along the Aleutian island arcs bordering the oceanic seafloor. The objective of this paper is to explore the interaction between the geophysical setting affecting the relief of the seafloor by using geoinformation techniques and geological analysis. In the hypothesis of this study, variations in the geophysical fields as independent variables are reflected in the morphology of the seafloor, which can be observed using data visualization by the advanced cartographic scripting solutions. The open source high-resolution topographic map (ETOPO1), marine free-air gravity and Bouguer gravity anomaly data were used and integrated to investigate the potential correlation between the geophysical, geological, tectonic and topographic settings of the Bering Sea. Our main method includes bathymetric mapping of the area with publicly available bathymetric data using GMT. Materials include open source data: ETOPO1 raster grid with 1 arc-minute resolution, EGM96 gravity and vector contour layers of GMT. The research included complex thematic mapping of the region, including topographic, contour, geodetic and geophysical mapping, 3D modelling and geomorphological plotting of the 30 cross-section segments of the trench located SE off the Bowers Ridge. According to the processed ETOPO1 dataset, the minimal depth is -8480 m and the mean is -3089.154 m. The geoid undulations model shows that the majority of the gravity values lie in the interval between -10 and 20 m with the lowest values along the trench. The statistical histogram shows that the most common depth value in the segment of the Aleutian Trench is -4800 m, occurring 1722 times. The profile linear trend modelling was done with four different approaches of the regression model (y = f(x) + e) by weighted least squares (WLS) with arguments: 1) m,t = a + bt (polynomial model degree one); 2) m3t = a + bt + ct2 (polynomial model degree two); 3) m4t = a + bt + ct2+ dcos27r*t + esin27t*t (polynomial model with Fourier series one); and 4) additional plotting residuals. Surface modelling was performed using xyz modelling from the ASCII data enlarging fragment towards SE of the Bowers Ridge. The tested functionality of modules of GMT presented an effective cartographic scripting toolset enabling a precise topographic mapping and 3D modelling. The paper contributes to a more detailed understanding of the Pacific Ocean seafloor bathymetry, more specifically of the selected segment of the Aleutian Trench near Bowers Ridge area. The article examines platform-margin faunas of the Ordovician period in the Jones Ridge Formation in the Yukon-Alaska boundary. Topics covered include re-description and intensive sampling of the type section of the Jones Ridge Formation and interpretation of data indicating that the Jones Ridge strata is a product of deposition in outermost platform to upper slope environments.

Climate change poses a significant threat to Arctic freshwater biodiversity, but impacts depend upon the strength of organism response to climate‐related drivers. Currently, there is insufficient knowledge about Arctic freshwater biodiversity patterns to guide assessment, prediction, and management of biodiversity change.As part of the Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program's first freshwater assessment, we evaluated diversity of diatoms, benthic macroinvertebrates, and fish in North American Arctic rivers. Alpha diversity was assessed in relation to temperature, water chemistry, bedrock geology, and glaciation history to identify important environmental correlates. Biotic composition was compared among groups to evaluate response to environmental gradients.Macroinvertebrate α‐diversity declined strongly with increasing latitude from 48°N to 82°N, whereas diatom and fish diversity peaked around 70°N without a clear latitudinal decline. Macroinvertebrate diversity was significantly positively related to air temperature. Diatom diversity was related to bedrock geology and temperature, whereas fish diversity was related to glaciation history.Fish and macroinvertebrate assemblages differed between sites in western Canada, where invertebrate composition was more variable, and Alaska, where fish composition was more variable. In sites with both diatom and macroinvertebrate data, diatom composition was distinct in Alaska, where richness was highest in former glacial refugia. Macroinvertebrate composition was distinct in lowest‐latitude eastern and high‐latitude western Canadian sites where temperature was highest.Temperature, precipitation, geology, calcium, and substrate size were important environmental correlates for diatoms and macroinvertebrates, although the relative importance of each correlate differed. Diatom taxa were most strongly associated with water chemistry, whereas benthic invertebrate composition related most strongly to precipitation and temperature.This large‐scale study provides the most substantial integration and analysis of river diatom, macroinvertebrate, and fish data from the North American Arctic to date. Findings suggest that macroinvertebrates will show the strongest response to climate‐related shifts in temperature, whereas diatoms and fish are more likely to respond to climate‐induced shifts in nutrients and hydraulic connectivity. However, significant gaps in data coverage limited our ability to reliably evaluate spatial patterns and detect change. Bogoslof volcano is a shallow submarine/subaerial volcano in the southern Bering Sea about 100 km west of the community of Dutch Harbor, Alaska. The subaerial parts of the volcano consist of two small islands, Bogoslof Island and Fire Island, that together have a total area of about 1.6 km2. Bogoslof was first depicted on a Russian map in 1772 and since then has been observed and visited occasionally. The volcano has had at least nine periods of eruptive activity since 1796 and all of its historical eruptions have been similar in style. Historical Bogoslof eruptions involved the effusion of basalt, trachybasalt, basaltic trachyandesite, and trachyandesite lava domes with above sea level relief of 100–200 m. Many of the eruptions are accompanied by the formation of tuff rings and ejection of ballistic particles. Historical observations suggest that eruption clouds are relatively ash-poor. Minor ash fallout has typically occurred within about 100 km of the volcano. Many of the historical eruptions began at vents that were below sea level, and thus, seawater has played an important role in the style of eruptive activity exhibited by the volcano. At times, eruptive activity has been characterized by Surtseyan style eruptions and magma interaction with wet vent-fill deposits. At other times, the eruptive style has been more magmatically driven and has resulted in the formation of pyroclastic flows and small ash clouds. Preliminary studies of the deposits produced during the 2016–2017 eruption indicate vertical sequences of coarse-grained, horizontally bedded pyroclastic flow and fall deposits with numerous blocks, bombs, and lapilli of dense juvenile and accidental lithic material. These deposits were emplaced by near-vent pyroclastic flows, surges, and explosions some of which originated from shallow, highly crystalline cryptodomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Kougarok prospect is situated in a Sn-W (+Ta, Nb, Li, Be) metallogenic belt formed in a post-collisional to within-plate tectonic environment. Crystal fractionation of granitic magma, combined with its mixing/mingling with mantle-derived mafic magma, is proposed as the major process causing the formation of the complex B-rich to Li-F-type granitic suite and associated Sn-rare metal (Ta, Nb, Li) mineralization. An intrusion of alkalic (potassic lamprophyric) mafic magma into a crystallizing biotite-tourmaline granite magma reservoir may have supplied a geochemically distinct assemblage of volatiles (F) and associated metals (Li, Ta, Nb) into the boron- and Sn-rich granitic system. An alternative model considers differentiation-driven unmixing of mafic and granitic silicate melts sequestering different volatile and mineralizing species that could also trigger magma-fluid and fluid-fluid unmixing, with separation of gaseous fluid coexisting with immiscible granitic and mafic magmas in the form of magmatic melt-fluid-crystal "suspension." Biotite-tourmaline granite was accompanied by early quartz-tourmaline-cassiterite greisen at > 430–380 °C followed by quartz-tourmaline-chlorite-cassiterite stockwork at < 350 °C. The immiscibility of F- and B-rich fluids was followed by preferred ascent of F-rich fluids upward in the granitic magma reservoir, with its strong enrichment in F, Li, Ta, and Nb and subsequent crystallization of zinnwaldite granite at a shallower level, with separation of homogenous high-salinity magmatic fluid at ~ 600 °C. Crystallization and fluid exsolution continued at lower temperatures, followed by formation of topaz-quartz stockscheider at 550–500 °C. Ta-Nb mineralization in the uppermost part of the zinnwaldite granite appears to be associated with final episodes of magmatic crystallization, particularly W-Nb-rutile and columbite-tantalite with a higher Nb content. Some Ta-Nb minerals, such as columbite-tantalite with a higher Ta content, appear to be also stable during the post-magmatic stage, in quartz-tourmaline+topaz greisen and higher-temperature quartz-albite-Li mica alteration that replace zinnwaldite granite at ~ 500 to 400 °C. Nearly contemporaneous, lower-temperature quartz-albite-Li mica alteration and quartz-muscovite, quartz-topaz, and quartz-fluorite greisens formed from boiling fluids at 390–350 °C and caused removal of Ta-Nb minerals. Instead, fluid cooling and neutralization of boiling fluids affected Sn solubility and promoted massive cassiterite deposition in the late greisens. The latest phyllic quartz-sericite-carbonate alteration assemblage, comprising arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and other sulfides, native Bi, and Bi tellurides, formed from boiling fluids at < 310 °C. The Peratrovich Formation and overlying Ladrones Limestone in the Craig C4 quadrangle of the Prince of Wales Island, Alaska, record the accumulation of Carboniferous carbonates behind the remnants of a Late Devonian volcanic arc in the Alexander terrane. The occurrences of declinognathodid elements in the lower Ladrones Limestone suggest the possibility of a conformable Mississippian-Pennsylvanian boundary near the base of the Ladrones Limestone. The recovery of the Early Pennsylvanian conodont Idiognathoides chaagulootus n. sp. in the lower part of the Ladrones Limestone helps to constrain current models of the paleogeographic position of the Alexander terrane during the Carboniferous because of its limited occurrence within the Uralian Seaway. The presence of Id. chaagulootus n. sp. in the Alexander terrane, the Brooks Range of Alaska, and Novaya Zemlya indicates a species level biogeographic connection between these regions that shows that the Alexander terrane remained in the Uralian Seaway until at least the Middle Pennsylvanian. Ring-width (RW) records from the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) have yielded a valuable long-term perspective for North Pacific changes on decadal to longer timescales in prior studies but contain a broad winter to late summer seasonal climate response. Similar to the highly climatesensitive maximum latewood density (MXD) proxy, the blue intensity (BI) parameter has recently been shown to correlate well with year-to-year warm-season temperatures for a number of sites at northern latitudes. Since BI records are much less labour intensive and expensive to generate than MXD, such data hold great potential value for future treering studies in the GOA and other regions in mid- to high latitudes. Here we explore the potential for improving treering-based reconstructions using combinations of RW- and BI-related parameters (latewood BI and delta BI) from an experimental subset of samples at eight mountain hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana) sites along the GOA. This is the first study for the hemlock genus using BI data. We find that using either inverted latewood BI (LWBinv) or delta BI (DB) can improve the amount of explained temperature variance by > 10% compared to RW alone, although the optimal target season shrinks to June-September, which may have implications for studying ocean-atmosphere variability in the region. One challenge in building these BI records is that resin extraction did not remove colour differences between the heartwood and sapwood; thus, long term trend biases, expressed as relatively warm temperatures in the 18th century, were noted when using the LWBinv data. Using DB appeared to overcome these trend biases, resulting in a reconstruction expressing 18th-19th century temperatures ca. 0.5 °C cooler than the 20th-21st centuries. This cool period agrees well with previous dendroclimatic studies and the glacial advance record in the region. Continuing BI measurement in the GOA region must focus on sampling and measuring more trees per site (> 20) and compiling more sites to overcome site-specific factors affecting climate response and using subfossil material to extend the record. Although LWBinv captures the interannual climate signal more strongly than DB, DB appears to better capture long-term secular trends that agree with other proxy archives in the region. Great care is needed, however, when implementing different detrending options and more experimentation is necessary to assess the utility of DB for different conifer species around the Northern Hemisphere. We hypothesized topographic features alone could be used to locate groundwater discharge, but only where diagnostic topographic signatures could first be identified through the use of limited field observations and geologic data. We built a geodatabase from geologic and topographic data, with the geologic data only covering ~40% of the study area and topographic data derived from airborne LiDAR covering the entire study area. We identified two types of groundwater discharge: shallow hillslope groundwater discharge, commonly manifested as diffuse seeps, and aquifer-outcrop groundwater discharge, commonly manifested as springs. We developed multistep manual procedures that allowed us to accurately predict the locations of both types of groundwater discharge in 93% of cases, though only where geologic data were available. However, field verification suggested that both types of groundwater discharge could be identified by specific combinations of topographic variables alone. We then applied maximum entropy modeling, a machine learning technique, to predict the prevalence of both types of groundwater discharge using six topographic variables: profile curvature range, with a permutation importance of 43.2%, followed by distance to flowlines, elevation, topographic roughness index, flow-weighted slope, and planform curvature, with permutation importance of 20.8%, 18.5%, 15.2%, 1.8%, and 0.5%, respectively.
