Sulfite, a widely used food additive, is subject to regulated labeling. The extraction of sulfite as the stable hydroxymethylsulfonate (HMS) form and its quantitative analysis by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has been recognized for their good sensitivity, selectivity, and versatility across various food materials. This study aimed to develop a cost-effective and simpler method for sulfite quantitation, while maintaining the superior sensitivity and selectivity of mass spectrometry (MS). To achieve this, we introduced paper spray ionization (PSI), an ambient desorption ionization technique that could achieve the direct measurement of analytes without employing separation. We also employed a novel internal standard (IS) structurally similar to the analyte, replacing the more expensive isotopically labeled IS. Although the PSI-MS/MS method developed in this study exhibited slightly lower analytical performance compared to the conventional LC-MS/MS, it remained effective for sulfite analysis in dried fruits.

Improving the shelf lives of fruits is challenging. The biodegradable polysaccharide pullulan exhibits excellent film-forming ability, gas barrier performance, and natural decomposability, making it an optimal material for fruit preservation. To overcome problems of high cost and film porosity of existing packaging technologies, we aimed to develop pullulan-based packaging paper to enhance the shelf lives of fruits. A thin paper coating comprising a mixture of 15 wt.% pullulan solution at various standard viscosities (75.6, 77.8, and 108.5 mPa·s) with tea polyphenols (15:2) and/or vitamin C (150:1) improved the oxygen transmission rate (120-160 cm 3 m -2 ·24 h·0.1 MPa), water vapor transmission rate (<5.44 g·mm -1 m -2 ·h·kPa), maximum free radical clearance rate (>87%), and antibacterial properties of base packaging paper. Grapes wrapped with these pullulan-based papers exhibited less weight loss (>4.41%) and improved hardness (>16.4%) after 10 days of storage compared to those of control grapes (wrapped in untreated/base paper). Grapes wrapped with pullulan-based paper had >12.6 wt.% total soluble solids, >1.5 mg/g soluble protein, >0.44 wt.% titratable acidity, and ≥4.5 mg 100 g -1 ascorbic acid. Thus, pullulan-based paper may prolong the shelf life of grapes with operational convenience, offering immense value for fruit preservation.

A large number of fresh fruits are wasted in the supply chain due to spoilage, so it is crucial to develop fruit preservation materials. Herein, two novel Ag-MOFs/carboxymethyl filter paper (Ag-MOFs/CMFP) composites were successfully synthesized by in situ facile synthesis, which can be used as packaging materials to delay fruit spoilage. The synthesis process is simple and environmentally friendly, and the reaction conditions are mild. The mechanical property, water stability, and antibacterial activity of the as-synthesized Ag-MOFs/CMFP composites were investigated. Specifically, the composites exhibited high mechanical performance and the tensile strength was >10.00 MPa. Moreover, the composites displayed good water stability and can remain stable in water environment for >7 days, which can be attributed to the strong interaction between Ag-MOFs and CMFP. Significantly, Ag-MOF particles endow the composite papers with excellent antibacterial activity, which can inactivate 99.9 % of the bacteria. Attributed to these characteristics, these composite papers were used as fruit fresh-keeping materials and can prolong the shelf-life of cherry tomatoes and peaches for >10 days. In this study, we developed an in-package colorimetric paper to monitor the ripeness of kiwifruit by detecting the release of aldehydes. Strongly hydrophobic composite films were prepared using chitosan as the matrix and beeswax as an additive. A piece of cellulose paper containing methyl red and bromocresol violet as color indicators was heat-sealed between two hydrophobic films to protect the indicators from the effects of fruit respiration and transpiration. The nucleophilic addition reaction between aldehydes and OH - (Cannizzaro reaction) changes the pH in the paper and triggers a color change in the indicators. As the kiwifruit ripens, the colorimetric paper changes from bluish-purple to dark red and then gradually to red. A mobile phone application was further used to measure the RGB values and link them to kiwifruit ripeness. Anxi persimmon is a popular fruit because of its appealing flavor and rich nutrients such as polysaccharides. However, the harvested persimmon fruit softens and deteriorates quickly. This study explored the influences of the treatment of papers containing 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on the contents of cell wall polysaccharides and activities of cell wall-degrading enzymes in harvested Anxi persimmons, as well as its effect on fruit softening. The results demonstrated that, in comparison to the control Anxi persimmons, the Anxi persimmons treated with 1.35 μL/L 1-MCP manifested higher fruit firmness, higher contents of protopectin, cellulose, and hemicellulose, but a lower level of water-soluble pectin, lower activities of pectin methylesterase, polygalacturonase, cellulase, and β-galactosidase in Anxi persimmons during postharvest storage. This study aimed to develop an eco-friendly flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for in-situ detection of pesticides using biodegradable bacterial nanocellulose (BNC). Plasmonic silver nanoparticle- bacterial nanocellulose paper (AgNP-BNCP) composites were prepared by vacuum-assisted filtration. After loading AgNPs into BNC hydrogel, AgNPs were trapped firmly in the network of nanofibrous BNCP upon ambient drying process, resulting in 3D SERS hotspots within a few-micron depth on the substrate. The fabricated AgNP-BNCPs exhibited high SERS activity with good reproducibility and stability as demonstrated by the detection of 4-aminothiophenol and methomyl pesticide. Due to the optical transparency of BNCP, a direct and rapid detection of methomyl on fruit peels using AgNP-BNCPs can be achieved, demonstrating a simple and effective 'paste-and-read' SERS approach. The global annual fruit and vegetable waste accounts for more than half of food waste, and the main cause of this waste is the deterioration of fruit and vegetable. In addition, fruit spoilage can produce foodborne illnesses and pose a public health threat. In order to guarantee the quality and safety of fruits in the fruit supply chain. We prepared multifunctional silver based metal-organic frameworks@carboxymethyl filter paper (Ag-MOFs@CMFP) composite paper by in situ synthesis. The composite paper used in fruit packaging can effectively slows down fruit deterioration. Besides, Ag-MOFs@CMFP composite paper can reflect the quality of the fruit by detecting changes in humidity, which has yet to be reported elsewhere. Significantly, transmitting the humidity response signal to the mobile phone can realize remote real-time wireless monitoring of fruit quality. Herein, we reported a simple, flexible and sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate to detect methyl parathion residues in real life. The substrate was fabricated by filter paper and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) with excellent reproducibility and stability. First, Au NPs were synthesized by the seed mediated growth method and assembled to the filter paper through immersion. The Raman probe molecule 4-MBA was used to evaluate performance of the substrate for an optimized signal using a portable Raman spectrometer coupled with 785 nm laser. Then, the paper-based substrate was applied to detect methyl parathion standard solution whose detection limit was down to 0.011 μg/cm 2 , and the linear range was between 0.018 μg/cm 2 and 0.354 μg/cm 2 . Afterwards, actual sample (apple) spiked with methyl parathion was taken to verify the practicality of the substrate by a simple way of "press-peel off". The recovery rate was ranged from 94.09% to 98.72%, indicating that this method is reliable in actual sample detection without complicated pretreatment steps. Peaches are known for their palatable flavor and abundant nutrients. However, peaches are perishable, and the existing preservation techniques for peaches are still immature. To further extend the shelf life and prevent nutrient loss of perishable peaches under ambient temperature in summer (approximately 25-32 °C), we conducted experiments wrapping peaches (Prunus persica cv 'Baihua') in single- and composite-treated vegetal fibrous papers that contained calcium carbonate, phytic acid, Na-alginate and vitamin C. The pathogenic fungi that primarily caused peach decay during storage belonged to the genera of Penicillium, Botrytis, Aspergillus, Alternaria, and Rhizopus. After analyzing quality attributes, including weight loss, firmness, soluble sugar content, respiration rate, relative electric conductivity, malonaldehyde content, peroxidase activity and the decay index, we proved that vitamin C within the preservative paper greatly contributes to peach preservation. Combined with phytic acid and Na-alginate, the composite vitamin C preservative papers played significant roles in delaying fruit senescence, and 0.4% (w/v) vitamin C preservative paper with 1% Na-alginate could maintain quality and extend shelf life with the best effect. This preservation technique significantly postponed the respiration peak by 2-3 days and is a significant contribution to contemporary commercial production.

In this work, a dual-functional SERS platform was developed via a paper-based SERS substrate with the aid of hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for effective and reliable measurements of thiram on fruit surfaces and in juice. Specifically, the paper-based SERS substrate was fabricated by coating with a core-shell Au@Ag nanorod monolayer, and the SERS performance was optimized compared with multilayer adsorption. Moreover, a versatile SERS platform was constructed by simply pasting the paper-based substrate in reverse onto PDMS using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) tape. On the one hand, this detection platform was able to realize sample enrichment due to the excellent hydrophobicity of PDMS, thereby increasing the sensitivity of measurements, and its function was successfully displayed through the identification of thiram in orange juice. On the other hand, PDMS could also play a supporting role and the paper-based substrate reversely stuck on PDMS was able to extract samples on the side without nanoparticles, which greatly avoids damage to nanoparticles on the substrate. Therefore, the accuracy of analysis was significantly improved and the inspection of thiram on the surface of an orange was demonstrated based on this function. As a result, this proposed SERS platform provides a new strategy for preparing multifunctional SERS sensors for the on-site monitoring of chemical contaminants in the food-safety field.

Many important considerations in the design of practical Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates are necessary, such as the low cost, simple preparation, mass production and high efficiency of sample collection, which the conventional rigid substrates are lack of. In this work, practical SERS substrates based on deposition of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on commercially available low-cost filter paper were prepared by simple silver mirror reaction in a large scale, and utilized for rapid, portable and accurate identification and detection of pesticide residues at various peels. Compared with conventional substrates, this novel SERS substrate dramatically enhanced the sample collection efficiency by simply swabbing paper-based device across different surfaces without destroying the sample, meanwhile avoiding the substrate signal of real-world samples. Considering their low cost, portability, simplicity and high sample collection efficiency, Ag NP-decorated filter paper, as practical SERS substrate, are used in solving critical problems for detection of pesticide residues at various peels. SERS experiments were carried out on Ag NP-decorated filter paper combined with 'dynamic SERS' (D-SERS) due to its high detection sensitivity. The excellent detection performance of the Ag NP-based filter paper was demonstrated by detection thiram and paraoxon residues at various peels. Recycled fibers used in the manufacturing of paper and board are associated with strength deficiencies. This study investigated the use of TEMPO-oxidized nanocellulose from oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFBTEMPO) for reinforcing papers made from such fibers. Strength properties of tensile and tear were enhanced with the addition of OPEFB-TEMPO, with strong correlations, as indicated by the R² values. The reinforcement capability was supported by the scattering coefficient-percent relationship. The only drawback of the nanocellulose addition is that it reduces pulp drainability, which can be minimized by adding drainage aids. Because only a relatively small amount is required, OPEFB-TEMPO has the potential to be used as paper strengthening agent, particularly in the production of low grammage papers. Background: Weight loss interventions have not been advocated for overweight/obese older adults due to potential loss of skeletal muscle and strength impacting on physical function with potential loss of independence. Carotenoids and polyphenols are inversely associated with sarcopenic symptomology. This paper reports the protocol of a study evaluating the efficacy of a high-protein, energy restricted diet rich in carotenoids and polyphenols on body composition, muscle strength, physical performance and quality of life in overweight and obese older adults., Methods: This randomised controlled clinical trial will recruit community-dwelling, healthy overweight and obese older adults (≥60 years) for a 12-week weight loss intervention. Seventy-three participants will be recruited and randomized to an energy restricted (~30% restriction), isocaloric diet (30% protein; 30% carbohydrate; 40% fat) enriched with either: a) 375 g/d of high carotenoid vegetables, 300 g/d high carotenoid fruit, and 40-60 ml extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO); or b) 375 g/d of lower carotenoid vegetables, 300 g/d lower carotenoid fruit, and 40-60 ml Polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) based oil. All participants will receive individual dietary counselling each fortnight for the duration of the study and will be asked to maintain their habitual level of physical activity throughout the study. The primary outcome will be appendicular skeletal muscle (ASM) assessed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Secondary outcomes will include body weight, fat-free mass (FFM), fat mass (FM), muscle strength (Isometric hand-grip strength), physical performance (Short Physical Performance Battery), physical activity (International Physical Activity Questionnaire) and health related quality of life (SF-36). In this study, a paper-based sensor, combined with a visual distance-readout method, was developed to determine glucose in fruit samples based on the glucose oxidase-mediated sodium alginate gelation. The type of filter paper, the concentration of sodium alginate and the enzymatic reaction conditions were systematically investigated. Under optimal conditions, the increase in diffusion diameter showed a good linear relationship with glucose concentration between 1.4-7.0 mM, and the limit of quantification was 1.4 mM. Finally, the applicability of the proposed strategy was successfully verified by measuring glucose concentrations in fruit samples. The results generated by the developed paper-based sensor were in good agreement with the results obtained from a glucose assay kit. The recoveries were 91.8%-99.1%. The present work reports the biobleaching effect on OPEFB pulp upon utilisation of extracellular xylano-pectinolytic enzymes simultaneously yielded from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens ADI2. The impacts of different doses, retention times, pH, and temperatures required for the pulp biobleaching process were delineated accordingly. Here, the OPEFB pulp was subjected to pre-treatment with xylano-pectinolytic enzymes generated from the same alkalo-thermotolerant isolate that yielded those of higher quality. Remarkable enhanced outcomes were observed across varying pulp attributes: for example, enzyme-treated pulp treated to chemical bleaching sequence generated improved brightness of 11.25%. This resulted in 11.25% of less chlorine or chemical consumption required for obtaining pulp with optical attributes identical to those generated via typical chemical bleaching processes. Ultimately, the reduced consumption of chlorine would minimise the organochlorine compounds found in an effluent, resulting in a lowered environmental effect of paper-making processes overall as a consequence. This will undoubtedly facilitate such environmentally-friendly technology incorporation in the paper pulp industry of today.

The application of agrochemicals in citrus fruits is widely used to improve the quality of crops, increase production yields, and prolong post-harvest life. However, these substances are potentially toxic for humans and the ecosystem due to their widespread use, high stability, and bioaccumulation. Conventional techniques for determining pesticide residues in citrus fruits are chromatographic methods coupled with different detectors. However, in recent years, the need for analytical strategies that are less polluting for the environment has encouraged the appearance of new alternatives, such as sensors and biosensors, which allow selective and sensitive detection of pesticide residues in real time. A comprehensive overview of the analytical platforms used to determine pesticide residues in citrus fruits and citrus-derived products is presented herein. The authors report Myxobacteria virescens ( M . virescens ) mediated synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and its efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC-33591), Salmonella typhi (ATCC-51812), Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) (ATCC-14948), Klebsiella pneumoniae (MTCC-4030) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC-4673). The organism exhibiting resistance to various antibiotics showed remarkable sensitivity, when used in combination of antibiotics and AgNPs. Antimicrobial property of AgNPs is playing a significant role in medicine and food storage. In this study, they have used M. virescens for the synthesis of AgNPs, which were characterised by using UV-Vis spectrophotometer, nano-particles tracking and analysis, zeta potential, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Synthesised AgNPs were impregnated into paper by three different methods, i.e. glass rod method (without binder), glass rod method (with binder) and direct synthesis of AgNPs on paper. Nanoparticles synthesis on paper showed the significant antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC-33591), Salmonella typhi (ATCC-51812), E. coli (ATCC-14948), Klebsiella pneumoniae (MTCC-4030) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC-4673). Paper impregnated with AgNPs was used for wrapping of fruits (apples) which increases their shelf life up to 15 days. This study demonstrates a new method for wrapping of fruits, which increases the shelf life of apples.

Main Conclusion: Paper-bagging treatment can transform non-transcribed MdMYB1 - 2 and MdMYB1 - 3 alleles into transcribed alleles through epigenetic regulations, resulting in the red pigmentation of a normally non-red apple cultivar 'Mutsu.' Anthocyanin biosynthesis in apples is regulated by MdMYB1/A/10, an R2R3-Type MYB gene. 'Mutsu,' a triploid apple cultivar harboring non-transcribed MdMYB1-2 and MdMYB1-3 alleles, retains green skin color under field conditions. However, it can show red/pink pigmentation under natural or artificial ultraviolet-B (UV-B) light exposure after paper-bagging and bag removal treatment. In the present study, we found that in 'Mutsu,' paper bagging-induced red pigmentation was due to the activation of non-transcribed MdMYB1-2/-3 alleles, which triggered the expression of downstream anthocyanin biosynthesis genes in a UV-B-dependent manner. By monitoring the epigenetic changes during UV-B-induced pigmentation, no significant differences in DNA methylation and histone modifications in the 5' upstream region of MdMYB1-2/-3 were recorded between the UV-B-treated fruit skin (red) and the fruit skin treated only by white light (green). In contrast, bag treatment lowered the DNA methylation in this region of MdMYB1-2/-3 alleles. Similarly, higher levels of histone H3 acetylation and trimethylation of H3 tail at lysine 4, and lower level of trimethylation of H3 tail at lysine 27 were observed in the 5' upstream region of MdMYB1-2/-3 in the skin of the fruit immediately after bag removal. These results suggest that bagging treatment can induce epigenetic changes, facilitating the binding of trans factor(s) to MdMYB1-2/-3 alleles, resulting in the activation of these MYBs after bag removal.

The freshness and safety of fruits and vegetables affect our daily life. Paper products are often used in the packaging and transportation of fruits and vegetables, and these can provide other functions besides packaging after certain modifications and additions. In this study, the AgNPs/1-MCP antibacterial fresh-keeping composite paper was prepared by in-situ loaded silver nanoparticles and spraying 1-MCP solution. Moreover, the prepared paper was used to preserve sweet cherries. It was found that the prepared AgNPs/1-MCP antibacterial fresh-keeping composite paper could effectively inhibit E. coli and S. aureus. When the addition of 1-MCP in the paper was 0.05 g, the fresh-keeping effect on cherries was the best. Under this optimal condition, the weight loss ratio of the cherries was reduced by 1.93%, the firmness was increased by 27.7%, and the soluble solid content was increased by 25%. The preservation time was extended from 4 days to 12 days, three times that of the untreated ones. The prepared fresh-keeping material is environmentally friendly, non-toxic and harmless, simple to prepare and convenient to use, and is expected to become one of the important fresh-keeping methods for fruits. Oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB), an abundant fiber material obtained after extracting the oil from the strands, is classified as short fiber which needs supporting agent in order to enhance its mechanical strength for papermaking purpose. The main objective of this research is to investigate the effects of beaten EFB fibers incorporated with microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). Two types of beaten EFB fibers from 500 to 1000 revolutions were applied with MCC. The selected percentage of MCC addition was 0%, 3%, 6%, and 9%. Papermaking process was conducted according to TAPPI Standard T 205 sp-02. By incorporating MCC into EFB fibers, the porosity of the paper decreased while the opacity increased. Paper with 6% of MCC addition had the highest mechanical properties especially on the tensile strength. Beating effect was also found as a great factor in influencing the strength of the papers made from EFB fibers with MCC. Beating revolution of 500 showed excellent properties for tear, burst, and folding endurance. Based on physical, mechanical, and optical properties, the produced paper is found potential in the manufacture of writing or high-quality printing grade paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Colletotrichum spp. is a phytopathogen causing anthracnose in a variety of tropical fruits. Strategies used to control postharvest diseases in tropical fruits typically rely on the use of synthetic fungicides, which have stimulated the emergence of resistant pathogens. Safer alternative strategies to control anthracnose in tropical fruits have been described in the literature. This review presents and discusses the main innovative interventions concerning the application of sustainable alternative strategies in the postharvest control of pathogenic Colletotrichum species in tropical fruits, with a particular emphasis on the studies published in the last 5 years. The available studies have shown the use of various methods, including physical barriers, natural antimicrobials, and biological control with antagonistic microorganisms, to reduce anthracnose lesion severity and incidence in tropical fruits. The available literature showed high inhibitory activity in vitro, reduced anthracnose incidence and lesion diameter, and total disease inhibition in tropical fruits. Most studies focused on the inhibition of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides on avocado, papaya, and mango, as well as of Colletotrichum musae on banana; however, the inhibition of other Colletotrichum species was also demonstrated. The application of emerging sustainable alternative methods, including natural antimicrobial substances, also stimulated the induction of defense systems in tropical fruits, including enzymatic activity, such as polyphenol oxidase, peroxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase. Water scarcity and droughts are among the most challenging issues worldwide, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions like Saudi Arabia. Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.), a major crop in Saudi Arabia, is being significantly affected by water scarcity, soil salinity, and desertification. Alternative water sources are needed to conserve freshwater resources and increase date palm production in Saudi Arabia. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia has a significant number of aquaculture farms that generate substantial amounts of wastewater, which can be utilized as an alternative source of irrigation. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the potential of aquaculture wastewater as an alternative irrigation source for date palm orchards. Aquaculture wastewater was collected from 12 different farms (Al-Kharj, Al-Muzahmiya, and Al-Qassim regions, Saudi Arabia) and its quality was analyzed. The impacts of aquaculture wastewater irrigation on soil quality, nutrient availability, nutrient status of date palm trees, and dates fruit quality were assessed in comparison to source water (freshwater) irrigation at Al-Kharj, Al-Muzahmiya, and Al-Qassim regions. The water quality analyses showed higher salinity (EC = 3.31 dSm -1 ) in farm Q3, while all other farms demonstrated no salinity, sodicity, or alkalinity hazards. Moreover, the aquaculture wastewater irrigation increased soil available P, K, NO 3 - -N by 49.31%, 21.11%, 33.62%, and 52.31%, respectively, compared to source water irrigation. On average, date palm fruit weight, length, and moisture contents increased by 26%, 23%, and 43% under aquaculture wastewater irrigation compared to source water irrigation. Further, P, K, Fe, Cu, and Zn contents in date palm leaf were increased by 19.35%, 34.17%, 37.36%, 38.24%, and 45.29%, respectively, under aquaculture wastewater irrigation compared to source water irrigation. Overall, aquaculture wastewater irrigation significantly enhanced date palm plant growth, date palm fruit quality, and soil available nutrients compared to freshwater irrigation. It was concluded that aquaculture wastewater can be used as an effective irrigation source for date palm farms as it enhances soil nutrient availability, date palm growth, and date fruit yield and quality. The current study was designed to green synthesize silver nanoparticles (GRAgNPs) using Morus alba fruit extract and evaluate their nematicidal effects against strongyle nematodes compared to commercial silver nanoparticles (CAgNPs) in vitro. The nanoparticles were characterized by Ultraviolet-visual absorption spectrography, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Next, uptake of AgNPs by the first stage larvae (L 1 ), egg hatch inhibition (EHI) and the motility of infectious larvae (L3s), and the ultrastructural analysis of the eggs and worms were conducted. Moreover, some of oxidative/nitrosative stress indicators, including total antioxidant status content (TAC), protein carbonylation (PCO), lipid peroxidation (MDA), and DNA damage were assessed in the homogenized samples of strongyle L3s. We found that the GRAgNPs had spherical shape, 20-30 nm in diameter with rough surface. Following incubation with GRAgNPs at concentrations of 43.40, 21.70 and 10.85 ppm and CAgNPs at concentrations of 43.40 and 21.70, EHI was more than 90%. In addition, concentrations of 43.40 and 21.70 ppm of GRAgNPs led to inhibition of larval motility by more than 90%. The LC 50 at 24 h of treatment for GRAgNPs and CAgNPs was determined to be 8.62 and 10.34 ppm, respectively. GRAgNPs and CAgNPs, in a concentration-dependent manner, resulted in the induction of oxidative/nitrosative stress evidenced by decreased TAC levels, and increased levels of MDA and PCO, together with increased DNA damage. The uptake of AgNPs by the L1 larvae revealed that FITC labeled GRAgNPs fluoresced with high intensity largely in the intestinal area. Scanning Electron Microscopy analysis of eggs and larvae revealed that GRAgNPs penetrated the cuticle of larvae, changed the tegmentum, and ultimately killed the worm. Sugar is vital for plant growth and determines fruit quality via its content and composition. This study explores the differential sugar accumulation in two plum varieties, 'Fengtangli (FTL)' and 'Siyueli (SYL)'. The result showed that 'FTL' fruit displayed higher soluble solids and sugar content at various development stages. Metabolomic analysis indicated increased sorbitol in 'FTL', linked to elevated sorbitol-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase (S6PDH) activity. Transcriptome analysis identified a key gene for sorbitol synthesis, PsS6PDH4, which was significantly higher expressed in 'FTL' than in 'SYL'. The function of the PsS6PDH4 gene was verified in strawberry, apple, and plum fruits using transient overexpression and virus-induced gene silencing techniques. The results showed that overexpression of the PsS6PDH4 gene in strawberry, apple, and plum fruits promoted the accumulation of soluble solids content and sorbitol, while inhibition of the gene reduced soluble solids content and sorbitol content. Meanwhile, analysis of the relationship between PsS6PDH4 gene expression, sorbitol, and soluble solids content in four different plum varieties revealed a significant correlation between PsS6PDH4 gene expression and soluble solids content as well as sorbitol content. This research discovered PsS6PDH4 as a crucial regulator of sugar metabolism in plum, with potential applications in improving fruit sweetness and nutritional value in various fruit species. This study aimed to investigate the dissipation pattern, risk assessment, and waiting period of myclobutanil on apple fruit (Malus domestica Borkh.) under temperate conditions in Kashmir, India. The study involved the application of myclobutanil 10 WP at a single recommended dosage (125 g a.i. ha -1 ) and double dosage (250 g a.i. ha -1 ) on Red Velox apple trees, 2 months before harvest. GC equipped with an electron capture detector was used to analyze myclobutanil residues in fruit samples. The study revealed that myclobutanil, at both recommended and double recommended doses, dissipated rapidly and became nondetectable after 55 and 60 days, respectively. The waiting period for myclobutanil application was determined to be 12.41 days for the single dose and 25.58 days for the double dose, respectively. These waiting periods were based on the maximum residue limit of 0.6 ppm as prescribed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, and European Commission. The study concludes that myclobutanil 10 WP is safe for consumers at both recommended and double recommended doses when applied 2 months before harvest. Risk assessment, considering the average daily apple consumption in India and theoretical maximum residue contributions (TMRCs), indicates negligible health hazards even at double the recommended dosage. The calculated TMRC values at Day 0 were significantly below the maximum permissible intake. For average and maximum myclobutanil residues at single and double doses, the TMRC values were found to be 0.0069 and 0.0070 mg day -1 person -1 and 0.0105 and 0.0106 mg day -1 person -1 , respectively. These results indicate that myclobutanil, when used according to recommended dosages and waiting periods, poses minimal health risks to consumers. Fruit seeds are leftovers from a variety of culinary sectors. They are generally unutilized and contribute greatly to global disposals. These seeds not only possess various nutritional attributes but also have many heath-beneficial properties. One way to make use of these seeds is to extract their bioactive components and create fortified food items. Nowadays, researchers are highly interested in creating innovative functional meals and food components from these unconventional resources. The main objective of this manuscript was to determine the usefulness of seed powder from 70 highly consumed fruits, including Apple, Apricot, Avocado, Banana, Blackberry, Blackcurrant, Blueberry, Cherry, Common plum, Cranberry, Gooseberry, Jackfruit, Jamun, Kiwi, Lemon, Mahua, Mango, Melon, Olive, Orange, and many more have been presented. The nutritional attributes, phytochemical composition, health advantages, nanotechnology applications, and toxicity of these fruit seeds have been fully depicted. This study also goes into in-depth detailing on creating useful food items out of these seeds, such as bakery goods, milk products, cereal-based goods, and meat products. Chlorpyrifos is one of the most widely used organophosphate insecticides in agricultural production. Nevertheless, the residues of chlorpyrifos in agricultural by-product seriously threaten human health. Thus, the ultrasensitive detection of chlorpyrifos residues in agri-food products is of great demand. Herein, an AuNP/HNT-assembled disposable paper SERS substrate was prepared by an electrostatic self-assembly method to detect chlorpyrifos residues. The AuNP/HNT paper substrate exhibited high SERS activity, good reproducibility, and long-term stability, which was successfully used for quantitative detection of chlorpyrifos; the detection limit reached 7.9 × 10−9 M. For spiked apple samples the calculated recovery was 87.9% with a RSD value of 6.1%. The excellent detection ability of AuNP/HNT paper-based SERS substrate indicated that it will play an important role in pesticide detection in the future. Taking out and opening the ordinary multilayer fruit paper bag for fruit bagging is labor intensive, costly, not efficient, and potentially dangerous to the operator's health. There is a high demand to develop a mechanical device for the operation in Chinese orchards. A novel supplying device based on the manual operated fruit bag case was proposed. The open hand of the supplying device operates like a farmer's hand that can continuously take out a multilayer fruit paper bag one by one, and open it fully from its inside. Mechanism configuration and dimension parameter of the open hand were designed based on preliminary tests. The operation functionality of the supplying device prototype at different driving trajectories and speed was investigated in the study. The laboratory experimental data indicated that driving trajectory was an extremely significant factor for efficiently taking out and opening the fruit bag without sliding off and damage. Driving speed had a beneficial effect on reducing supplying time. With the synchronous driving trajectory and allowable high moving speed, the developed supplying device could achieve more than 90% opening success rate and less than 2-second opening time. A microfluidic paper-based device (µPAD) has been combined with metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for total phenolic compounds (TPC) quantification in fruit samples for the first time. The performance of the µPAD, based upon the vertical flow approach, was enhanced in order to determine the TPC content with high accuracy in fruit samples. The method was based on the traditional Folin-Ciocalteu Index using gallic acid or oenotannin as reference phenolic compounds. This novel design and construction of the device are in agreement with the principles of Green Chemistry avoiding wax technology (lower toxicity). The analytical parameters that affect the colorimetric method (using digital imaging of the colored zone) performance were optimized including design, sample volume, and MOF amount. Then, the analytical features of the developed method were investigated such as dynamic range (1.6–30 mg L−1), limit of detection (0.5 mg L−1), and precision (RSD < 9%). Besides, the in-field analysis is achievable with a color stability up to 6 h after the loading process of the sample and storage stability for at least 15 days without performance losses (under vacuum at − 20 °C). Furthermore, the MOF ZIF-8@paper was characterized to study its composition and the successful combination. The feasibility of the proposed method was demonstrated by determining the TPC in 5 fruit samples using oenotannin as reference solute. The accuracy was validated by comparison of the data with the results obtained with the recommended protocol proposed by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The relevance of several characteristics for the acceptability of steamed East Africa bananas (matooke) was assessed using consumer-preferred characteristics, the overall liking scores, check-all-that-apply (CATA) and the Just About Right scale. The study was conducted in rural and urban locations in three banana growing regions of Uganda. Two landraces and two hybrids were processed into matooke. Twelve trained panellists evaluated color, taste and texture sensory characteristics., Results: Consumers scored matooke from landraces as the most liked. The CATA test showed that the most important characteristics were: smooth mouthfeel, soft to the touch, not sticky, moldable, deep yellow color, attractive, good matooke taste and smell. Principal component analysis confirmed that most of the preferred sensory characteristics were associated with the local genotypes, whereas the less preferred characteristics were associated with hybrids. Correlation analysis revealed strong positive correlations between the consumer assessed characteristics, hardness by touch, softness to touch and yellowness, as well as quantitative laboratory characteristics (moldable, hardness by touch, softness and yellowness) of the steamed matooke. Color assessed by consumers was strongly correlated with the laboratory-assessed color indicators., Conclusion: The strong associations observed between laboratory-assessed and consumer-based characteristics (moldable by touch and yellowness) suggest the possibility of predicting consumer characteristics using quantitative laboratory sensory assessments. Matooke taste as assessed by consumer panel is strongly associated with smooth texture and deep yellow color, which were the characteristics associated with landraces in the laboratory sensory assessment. © 2023 The Authors. Banana is one of the most consumed and popular fruits in all regions of the world, being cultivated mainly in tropical countries. It is not only a rich source of vitamins A, C, and B, calcium, iron, potassium, phosphorus, and other vitamins and nutrients, but it also contains several types of antioxidants with high nutritional value. In this context, the current study aimed to quantify the content of ascorbic acid, flavonoids, pigments, and minerals present in "Nanicão" bananas during the ripening process. As demonstrated, the level of flavonoids was higher in ripe and overripe fruits, whereas the mineral composition was high only at ripening stage 4 (more yellow than green) a stage that should be prioritized when recommending fruit consumption to the population deficient in these minerals. Regarding pigments, there was a reduction in chlorophylls a and b and an increase in carotenoids and anthocyanins in peels and pulps. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Flavonoids are phenolic, bioactive compounds with proven antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity and products of the plant's secondary metabolism. The degradation of chlorophylls and synthesis of carotenoids and anthocyanins, and as a consequence of the latter pigment, the increase in flavonoids in the pulp was evident during the monitoring of ripening, mainly in the fruit peels in relation to pigments. Background and Aims: The softening of ripening fruit involves partial depolymerization of cell-wall pectin by three types of reaction: enzymic hydrolysis, enzymic elimination (lyase-catalysed) and non-enzymic oxidative scission. Two known lyase activities are pectate lyase and rhamnogalacturonan lyase (RGL), potentially causing mid-chain cleavage of homogalacturonan and rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) domains of pectin respectively. However, the important biological question of whether RGL exhibits action in vivo had not been tested., Methods: We developed a method for specifically and sensitively detecting in-vivo RGL products, based on Driselase digestion of cell walls and detection of a characteristic unsaturated 'fingerprint' product (tetrasaccharide) of RGL action., Key Results: In model experiments, potato RG-I that had been partially cleaved in vitro by commercial RGL was digested by Driselase, releasing an unsaturated tetrasaccharide ('ΔUA-Rha-GalA-Rha'), taken as diagnostic of RGL action. This highly acidic fingerprint compound was separated from monosaccharides (galacturonate, galactose, rhamnose, etc.) by electrophoresis at pH 2, then separated from ΔUA-GalA (the fingerprint of pectate lyase action) by thin-layer chromatography. The 'ΔUA-Rha-GalA-Rha' was confirmed as 4-deoxy-β-l-threo-hex-4-enopyranuronosyl-(1→2)-l-rhamnosyl-(1→4)-d-galacturonosyl-(1→2)-l-rhamnose by mass spectrometry and acid hydrolysis. Driselase digestion of cell walls from diverse ripe fruits [date, sea buckthorn, cranberry, yew (arils), mango, plum, blackberry, apple, pear and strawberry] yielded the same fingerprint compound, demonstrating that RGL had been acting in vivo in these fruits prior to harvest. The 'fingerprint' : (galacturonate + rhamnose) ratio in digests from ripe dates was approximately 1 : 72 (mol/mol), indicating that ~1.4 % of the backbone Rha→GalA bonds in endogenous RG-I had been cleaved by in-vivo RGL action., Conclusions: The results provide the first demonstration that RGL, previously known from studies of fruit gene expression, proteomic studies and in-vitro enzyme activity, exhibits enzyme action in the walls of soft fruits and may thus be proposed to contribute to fruit softening., (© The Author(s) 2024. A dual colorimetric/electrochemical sensor integrated with a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) is created for rapid and sensitive detection of cabaryl in fruit. For colorimetric sensor, quercetin modified silver nanoparticle (QCT-AgNPs) is synthesized via self-reduction, resulting in the color change from green to dark green in the presence of cabaryl, which can be readily observed via naked eyes. This colorimetric sensor provides a linear response of 5 – 50 μM quantified by Image J software. For electrochemistry, AgNPs/MXene nanocomposite electrode offers high electrocatalytic activity towards the detection of carbarly with a linear range of 0 – 60 µM and a detection limit of 0.01 µM. The limit of detection values obtained from this dual sensor are lower than a cut-off of carbaryl residue in food, which is 7 mg.kg−1 (35 µM) verifying the desired sensitivity of this platform. Ultimately, this dual sensor is successfully applied for on-site detection of carbaryl in the orange samples read out on the smartphone with satisfactory results. The topic of sustainability is trending upwards more and more, and it may be related to almost anything, no matter the scale. In this case, one may speak of a sustainable way of life (Hart, 1997), so an individual perspective or a sustainable supply chain or industry (Ahi and Searcy, 2013). The present paper aims at assessing the researchers interest in the sustainability of the dairy and fruit supply chains, since they are representative food groups for the majority of the population and the globalization phenomenon has dramatically changed peoples' choices of food products, some of them requesting products that are far from them without knowing the production process or the logistic chain, which makes both the choices and the supply chains unsustainable. The papers indexed in the Web of Science data base regarding "sustainable dairy" and "sustainable fruit" are bibliometric analysed and their main concepts are exposed through the Vos Viewer software, version 1.6.7.(Van Eck and Waltman, 2014). The main results show that even if the interest in these topics is on an ascending trend, the attention given by the researchers is very low. The main concepts used in the analysed papers concern the consumer requests of sustainable products, challenges towards a sustainable farming practice and food security. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Post-harvest fruits and vegetables are extremely susceptible to dramatic and accelerated quality deterioration deriving from their metabolism and adverse environmental influences. Given their vigorous physiological metabolism, monitoring means are lacking due to the extent that unnecessary waste and damage are caused. Numerous intelligent packaging studies have been hitherto carried out to investigate their potential for fruit and vegetable quality monitoring. This state-of-the-art overview begins with recent advances in target metabolites for intelligent packaging of fruits and vegetables. Subsequently, the mechanisms of action between metabolites and packaging materials are presented. In particular, the exact categorization and function of intelligent packaging of fruits and vegetables, are all extensively and comprehensively described. The depletion of fossil fuels coupled with stringent environmental laws has encouraged us to develop sustainable renewable energy. Due to its numerous benefits, anaerobic digestion (AD) has emerged as an environment-friendly technology. Biogas generated during AD is primarily a mixture of CH 4 (65-70%) and CO 2 (20-25%) and a potent energy source that can combat the energy crisis in today's world. Here, an attempt has been made to provide a broad understanding of AD and delineate the effect of various operational parameters influencing AD. The characteristics of fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) and its feasibility as a potent substrate for AD have been studied. This review also covers traditional challenges in managing FVW via AD, the implementation of various bioreactor systems to manage large amounts of organic waste and their operational boundaries, microbial consortia involved in each phase of digestion, and various strategies to increase biogas production., (© 2022. Population growth has stimulated rising demand for agro-food products and economic activity for many years, negatively impacting the ecosystem and non-renewable resource consumption. Algeria confronts the monumental challenge of effectively choosing how to nourish everyone on a more congested globe. However, food loss is a significant issue that worsens as Algerians' population expands and food consumption increases. In Algeria, food production and processing of food items, which include fruits, vegetables, and cereals, generate a considerable amount of by-products, with no commercial exploitation and a negative environmental impact, generating enormous socioeconomic problems. These by-products are essential sources of products with high levels of added value that can be applied in different sectors. They have no studies to measure the scope of food loss in the Algerian food industry. In this background, our research aims to quantify the loss in the Algerian food industry generated by the transformation of various agricultural products, directly affecting the economy and food availability for the population. The research utilizes a mixed methods approach, including coefficients, production statistics transformed, and data analysis; the findings reveal that a significant portion of fruits and vegetables are lost in the Algerian food industry, suggesting that minimizing food loss can help companies minimize costs and mitigate the adverse environmental effects of food production.
