The China-specific currency market framework of 'one currency, two markets' provides us with a unique natural experiment to investigate how the active offshore exchange rate frequently diverges from the onshore exchange rate. From an interdisciplinary perspective, we propose a methodological framework that first establishes four convexity–concavity indicators, and then employ time series clustering/segmentation techniques to explore the evolutionary patterns of the onshore and offshore Renminbi exchange rates from 2 May 2012 to 29 December 2017. The empirical results show that the methodology is able to recognize five scenarios in which the exchange rates behave in an unsupervised manner, arriving at a diagnosis of the evolutionary patterns for these two markets. The estimated inverse covariance matrices and the associated graphical representations highlight the assembled timestamps of clustering assignments and reveal time-invariant structures of the market state, with all the most relevant dependencies directly interconnected in these two markets. This article investigates the linkages of the movements in Renminbi (RMB) to volatility of exchange rate returns of other currencies before and after the yuan devaluation on 11 August 2015. A comparison between the onshore Chinese yuan (CNY) and the offshore Chinese yuan (CNH) is made. Standard regression methods underestimate the tail dependence between yuan and other exchange rate volatility, as financial data are non-normally distributed, especially when extreme event occurs. We apply Gumbel copulas to capture the presence of tail dependence between RMB returns and the volatility of exchange rate returns for 13 selected currencies, and found dependencies not revealed by the standard ARCH models. The tail dependence has increased after the RMB devaluation, suggesting that RMB depreciation is associated with higher downside risks in these currencies. This is most obvious in the currencies of Asian and ASEAN-5 countries that have strong trade and financial linkages with China. The dependence structure has shifted away from the dominance of onshore CNY rates before the devaluation to the growing importance of more volatile offshore CNH rates after the devaluation. Hence, any large depreciation in CNH will lead to a higher volatility in the other exchange rate returns, and the corresponding downside currency risks are higher than those of the CNY. Motivated by the capital outflow episode after the 8/11 renminbi exchange rate reform, we establish formal models to study renminbi exchange rate policy under depreciation pressure with a focus on its effect on market expectations. In an economy where capital controls are imposed, a central bank aims both to discourage speculative capital outflows and to reduce exchange rate misalignment. We find that (i) both capital controls and speculators' uncertainty about the central bank's exchange rate target can effectively discourage capital outflows; (ii) Any action taken by the central bank will send a signal to speculators about the central bank's exchange rate target, causing a change in speculators' expectations and subsequently in capital flows. This explains large capital outflows triggered by the 8/11 reform. This article intended to empirically test the interactive effects among renminbi (RMB) internationalization, trade and financial openness. Based on the monthly data from the first month of 2011 to the sixth month of 2018, we first build a vector error correction model includes RMB internationalization index, financial openness, trade openness, inflation rate, exchange rate and economic growth rate. Second, both linear and nonlinear Granger causality tests are conducted to analyze the causality of those variables. The results reveal that financial and trade openness have the greatest effects on the degree to which RMB is internationalized. In the short run, the trade openness will promote the development of RMB internationalization, while the financial openness will restrain such an effect. Long‐term conclusions are the opposite. Meanwhile, financial openness can influence RMB internationalization nonlinearly while RMB internationalization cannot influence financial openness either linearly or nonlinearly. In addition, a strong two‐way nonlinear Granger causality exists between RMB internationalization and exchange rate, and RMB internationalization and trade openness, respectively. Moreover, we find more nonlinear Granger relationships compared to linear Granger relationships, which implied that the relationships between RMB internationalization and other essential elements need to be assessed in the context of a complex nonlinear mechanism. China's increasing trade volume and continuous integration with global financial markets have strengthened the influences of the renminbi on the exchange rates of different currencies. Previous studies find closer co-movements between the renminbi and other currencies. This paper is novel to investigate the underlying determinants of the comovement further, using panel data of over thirty-four countries. Our results show that stronger bilateral trade and financial linkages with China have a positive association with the currency co-movement. Moreover, countries with greater flexibility in exchange rate regimes show stronger co-movements. These findings imply that growing co-movements are the consequence of autonomous decisions at the market rather than that of management by governments or central banks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study assesses the global and cross-regional influence of China's currency, the renminbi (RMB). We first develop a theoretical framework to determine the channel through which progress in RMB internationalization can be mapped onto the market influence of the RMB exchange rate on that of other currencies. Using a volatility connectedness approach, we then construct a series of spillover indices reflecting the international influence of the RMB. We find that the RMB's influence is worldwide but is smaller than that of major international currencies, such as the US dollar. Overall, the RMB has basically become a peripheral currency in Greater China, Central Asia, Eastern Europe, and some South Asian economies. Because of the Belt and Road initiative, regionalization of the RMB has also progressed in developing economies; however, China still has far to go in fully achieving internationalization of its currency. China has aggressively promoted Renminbi(RMB), or Chinese Yuan, to be the next international currency since 2005. Has China's effort been paid off as RMB gradually emerged as an invoicing currency? What are the spillover effects of the RMB internationalization on the current vehicle currency country, US, and the rest of the world? It's hard to estimate the externality of RMB internationalization because of the endogeneity of the regime change. We adopt a dynamic trading post model developed by (Rey, 2001) and (Devereux & Shi, 2013), that exchange rates, prices, consumption, and trade flows are endogenously determined. Hence we can solve the endogeneity and estimate the quantity of externalities by simulating the international goods and foreign exchange market. We find positive(negative) externality on import and export prices when RMB becomes an invoicingfreserve) currency in international trades. The externality on the real side of the economy, such as, export, import and real exchange rate, is significant only if RMB rises as an international reserve currency. This study examines the impact of changes in the Chinese exchange rate on Korean exports considering the characteristics of products exported. We use import data from OECD countries from 2002 to 2014 and find that Korea's exports of products having a greater competition further decline as renminbi depreciates. On the other hand, Korean exports of products having a greater complementarity degree with Chinese are more likely to increase as renminbi depreciates. In this study, we propose to employ the conditional autoregressive range-mixed-data sampling (CARR-MIDAS) model to model and forecast the renminbi exchange rate volatility. The CARR-MIDAS model exploits intraday information from the intraday high and low prices, which has the capacity to capture the high persistence of conditional range (volatility). The empirical results show that the range-based CARR-MIDAS model provides more accurate out-of-sample forecasts of the renminbi exchange rate volatility compared to the return-based GARCH and GARCH-MIDAS models and the range-based CARR model for forecast horizons of 1 day up to 3 months. In addition, the superior predictive ability of the CARR-MIDAS model is robust to different forecast windows. This study analyzes how Renminbi (RMB) internationalization policies affect RMB exchange rates between 2010 and 2016 using the VAR (Vector Auto-Regressive) model. The results show that many RMB internationalization policies have distinct impacts on the central parity rate, onshore exchange rate, and offshore exchange rate. Policies have the greatest effect on the offshore exchange rate, followed by the onshore rate, and the central parity rate. Further, changes in the RMB exchange rates can be divided into three stages. In the first stage, as the onshore exchange rate was subjected to the daily trading band at 0.5% around the central parity rate, the onshore exchange rate converged toward the central parity rate. Then, after the central bank widened the band of the onshore exchange rate on April 16, 2012, the onshore exchange rate followed the trend of the offshore exchange rate. This study employs Bayesian vector autoregressive method to investigate spillover effects from China's monetary policy to Asian economies through the exchange rate, domestic demand, and financial channels. The domestic demand channel plays dominant role to the transmission of China's monetary spillover. While the weak impact of the exchange rate channel could be explained by the positive correlated response of Asian currencies to renminbi shock, the limited influence of the financial channel is due to low financial development and high restrictions on capital flows of China. The contributions of this paper are two‐fold, one methodological and the other substantive. First, we propose a novel way of estimating volatility impulse response functions (VIRF) employing the Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. As a useful byproduct, the associated confidence bands can be constructed. Second, we analyze volatility spillovers between the on‐ and offshore Renminbi exchange rates toward the US dollar. The notion that the exchange rate affects exports is well understood. However, whether exporters respond to the expectations of the exchange rate is unknown. Hence, in this study, we construct a measure of exchange rate expectations based on news articles from the Factiva database. We use machine learning to identify and classify news articles about the appreciation of the renminbi (RMB, Chinese currency). Our empirical estimation shows that from 2000 to 2006, Chinese firms reduced their exports in response to a higher expectation of RMB appreciation. They switched their sales from export to domestic markets. The responses are larger in low‐productivity firms, state‐owned enterprises, processing trade, and final goods trade. However, China's financial influence has been much under-presented compared with its economic power. This mismatch provides an opportunity for China to promote greater inclusiveness and better balance of power in global financial governance. This paper studies the dynamic relationship between the parallel and official exchange rates of Chinese Yuan (CNY) to U.S. Dollar (USD). Motivated by recent evidence about Bitcoin as a major channel for capital flight from China, we construct a parallel exchange rate implied by Bitcoin prices in the Chinese and U.S. crypto exchanges. While the dual exchange rates are cointegrated, adjustment to long-run equilibrium is non-linear and depends on policy changes and state of the markets. Results from our Markov Switching Vector Error Correction model suggest the parallel exchange rate responds one-to-one in the long-run with respect to an official exchange rate innovation. However, an unexpected change in the parallel rate is countered by an opposite and state-dependent response in the official exchange rate, suggesting active exchange policy interventions by the Chinese monetary authority. This paper applies the Generalized Supremum Augmented Dickey–Fuller (GSADF) approach to highlight the multiple exchange rate bubbles, and detect the interaction between Renminbi (RMB) and Hong Kong dollar (HKD) by logistic regression. The results illustrate that (I) there exists multiple bubbles in the RMB and HKD, and both shows the short‐term period bubbles in the nominal exchange rates whereas performing the long‐term period bubbles in the real exchange rates; (II) the exchange rate bubbles mainly existed during the financial crisis. The RMB bubbles occurred more in domestic financial crisis, while the HKD bubbles occurred in both domestic and international financial crisis; (III) there are interactions between bubbles in the RMB and HKD. Specifically, the bubbles in the nominal exchange rates of the RMB and HKD are reinforcing each other while the bubbles in the real exchange rates markets are mutually hedging; the nominal and real exchange rate market are mutually reinforcing regardless of the RMB or HKD. This paper investigates the degree of connectedness of Asia Pacific forex markets post‐global financial crisis and relates it to developments in the renminbi markets. The connectedness measure developed by Diebold and Yilmaz (2014) (Journal of Econometrics, 182, 119–134) reveal the strength of linkages across the U.S. dollar currency pairs of 12 currencies, namely offshore renminbi, onshore renminbi, euro, yen, Australian dollar, Indian rupee, Korean won, Malaysian ringgit, New Zealand dollar, Singapore dollar, Thai baht and Taiwan dollar. With the gradual liberalization of China's exchange rate system, shocks from the renminbi markets contribute more to fluctuations in almost all individual Asia Pacific currency markets vis‐à‐vis the yen. Rolling regressions show a number of Asia Pacific currencies exhibit tighter association with the renminbi when the latter underwent exchange rate regime reform. Finally, results from a two‐step analysis involving a panel regression provide evidence that time‐varying sensitivities of Asia Pacific currencies to the renminbi are directly related to the countries' trade and financial links with China. This study examines the role of the Chinese renminbi (RMB) as an international anchor currency. After China abandoned its tight US dollar (USD) peg in 2005, the RMB found greater popularity as a reserve currency. This change in the RMB's role reflected China's growing presence in the global economy, even challenging the USD in some of the 155 countries that signed on to the Belt and Road initiative (BRI). Modifying the approach of Ahmed (2021) to estimate basket weights in exchange rate policy for the currencies of 63 advanced and emerging economy currencies, we account for potential drivers of the exchange rate omitted in previous studies to obtain unbiased anchor weight estimates. Unlike earlier studies, we find that the RMB's anchor weight in exchange rate policies remains low irrespective of China's global role. Overall, the weight of the RMB averaged 6 %, compared to an average share of 58 % for the USD and 35 % for the euro. We also find that the USD, euro and yen anchor choices are strongly interlinked. A change in the anchor weight of any of these three currencies results in a strong opposite change in the weights of other two. Changes in RMB anchoring, however, do not materially impact USD, euro and yen weights. An increase in financial markets volatility leads developing countries to increase anchor weights of the developed countries currencies USD, euro and yen. This paper studies the impact of a broadening of the SDR basket to the Chinese currency on the composition and volatility of the basket. Although, in the past, RMB inclusion would have had negligible impact due to its limited weight, a much more significant impact can be expected in the next decades. If the objective is to reinforce the attractiveness of the SDR as a unit of account and a store of value through more stability, then a broadening of the SDR to the RMB could be appropriate, provided some flexibility is introduced in the Chinese exchange-rate regime. Extant research finds that exchange rate pegs do little to reduce firms' exposure to exchange rate risk in emerging markets. We study whether exchange rate risk exposures under a pegged/controlled floating currency regime can be priced in asset returns using unique data on exchange rate regime changes in China. As the only currency in the basket of International Monetary Fund's (IMF) Special Drawing Rights that is not fully market-driven for its exchange rate formation, the Chinese RMB (renminbi) offers an ideal case to study the pricing of exchange rate risk in pegged and controlled floating regimes. We find a negative stock market reaction to the announcement of changes from a pegged exchange rate to a controlled floating regime, suggesting a negative stock valuation effect of expectation of increased exchange rate exposure to currency appreciation. Under the managed floating exchange rate regime, the volatilities of accounting performance measures are significantly greater for the companies with stronger exposure to foreign-exchange rate risk. More importantly, foreign-exchange rate risk is priced in equity returns under the controlled floating regime but not under the strictly pegged regime. Furthermore, the pricing is stronger for firms with higher sensitivity to economic channels transmitting the exchange rate risk exposure to risk premiums. Overall, our results suggest that currency hedging for a multinational corporation with foreign-exchange exposure is warranted under a controlled floating currency regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper empirically examines the role of USD, EUR, and CNY as international payment currencies in Korea, China, and Japan. Our survey of business people in those countries finds that higher convertibility and stability of these currencies in the SDR enhance their acceptability and usability for international payments. However, even during times of instability, USD remains highly accepted and usable as a trade payment currency unlike the cases of EUR and CNY. In recent years, China has introduced a series of trade and financial liberalization policies and taken a crucial step towards the internationalization of RMB. These new developments bring about one question: how has openness affected the RMB real exchange rate volatility? Our empirical results reveal that in the long term, both trade and financial openness reduce exchange rate volatility; in the short term, the effect of financial openness varies across the three financial sub-accounts. Financial development can magnify (mitigate) the impact of trade openness on volatility in the short (long) term, but its role in affecting the impact of financial openness depends on the financial sub-account involved. Economic policy uncertainty (EPU) weakens the impact of openness on exchange rate volatility. In addition, financial openness absorbs more external shocks than trade openness. This research was aimed at understanding the effects of exchange rate volatility on UAE's international trade. To examine the effects, 10 of the top trading partners of UAE were considered for this study. Additionally, in order to determine the volatilities of UAE's top 10 trading partners' currencies, the GARCH (1,1) model was used. After that the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bound testing approach determined the long-run relationship between the volatilities of the currencies and the trade of UAE. Furthermore, the short-run relation between volatility and trade was detected using the Granger causality test. The results indicated that in the long run the volatility of the Chinese Renminbi, the Euro and the Saudi Riyal affect UAE's exports, while UAE's imports in the long run are affected by the volatility of the Iranian Rial and the Euro as well. On the other hand, the volatilities of the Indian Rupee and the Omani Riyal tend to affect UAE's exports in the short term, however, the imports of UAE in the short run are actually affected by the volatilities of the Euro and the Swiss Franc. Motivation: After four decades of very successful reforms, China has become one of the largest economies in the world. An important area of these reforms is the exchange rate system and monetary policy, which over the years has complied with economic objectives, in particular the promotion of economic growth by improving export competitiveness. The progressive liberalisation of the Chinese economy and its ever closer integration into the world economy require this policy to be adapted to changing circumstances. Aim: The aim of the article is to analyze China's exchange rate policy from the perspective of the dilemma of choosing between using this policy to support export competitiveness and striving to internationalise the renminbi. Moreover, the author assesses the consequences of this policy for China's economy and for the world economy. The study includes theoretical research (analysis of the literature and research reports) and empirical research (analysis of statistical data) using a descriptive analysis. Results: For many years China's exchange rate policy has been focused on supporting economic growth by improving export competitiveness, resulting in both increasing internal imbalances and difficulties in stabilising inflation, as well as the accumulation of global payments imbalances. Since 2005 China has made its currency more flexible, so that the underestimation of the renminbi's exchange rate has decreased. In recent years, China has intensified its efforts to support the internationalisation of the renminbi. However, the renminbi is not yet in rivalry with the US dollar as the dominant international currency, although the Chinese currency's share as an international currency is increasing, which should have a positive impact on the stability of global financial relations. We analyse volatility spillovers between the on- and offshore (CNY and CNH) Renminbi exchange rates towards the US dollar (USD). The volatility impulse response (VIRF) methodology introduced by Hafner and Herwatz (2006) is applied to several shocks between January 2012 and December 2019. Furthermore, we propose a novel way of estimating VIRFs based on Bayesian estimation of the MV-GARCH BEKK model. A simple Independence Chain Metropolis-Hastings algorithm allows drawing VIRFs in an efficient manner, allowing to analyse the significance and persistence of volatility shocks and associated volatility spillovers. The VIRF results show that the CNH exchange rate promptly reflects the global market demand and supply, while the CNY exchange rate reacts with a time lag. This study examines the impact of exchange rate volatility on China-Pakistan trade flows from 1980 to 2020. Using data from 42 import industries and 34 export sectors, bilateral trade between China and Pakistan is analyzed, with the US as the third country. Cointegration analysis reveals a strong relationship between Pakistan-China trade flows and exchange rate volatility. The yuan/dollar exchange rate negatively affects 22 import and 24 export industries in Pakistan, while the rupee/dollar exchange rate negatively impacts 31 import and 17 export industries. This paper reveals the inherent characteristics behind the statistical phenomena of exchange rate interactions and co‐movements, corroborated empirically by exploring a range of currencies with varied degrees of flexibility. It then studies purposely the historical evolution and development prospects of the RMB exchange rate regime. The RMB exchange rate behaviour and statistical patterns are contrasted with the freely floating currencies in this context. Taking up alternative policy positions, the expected developments in RMB characteristics are deliberated, projecting a trajectory for further RMB regime reforms. How the RMB would fulfil the significant role on the global currency market as signified by its position in the SDR basket is contemplated, beyond a conventional policy shift and under the paradigm that the global currency market tends to be tri‐polar. In this paper, we examine the price elasticity of China's aggregate imports and then provide further details on this elasticity in partner countries according to their participation in two alternative trading arrangements (TPP vs RCEP) and their level of development. By using different types of data and appropriate methodologies to conduct our analysis at both global and bilateral levels, we observe that the price elasticity of China's imports is negative, which is consistent with the most recent studies and challenges the conventional wisdom. One hypothesis that might explain this result is the suppliers' patterns of trade. Since export diversification by trading partners can affect the sensitivity of Chinese imports to relative price movements, we endogenise the import price elasticity accordingly. We find that negative elasticities are more prominent when China's trading partners are developing countries, and when we consider their diversification in export markets. On the whole, the more partner countries are diversified in their export destinations, the lower the import price elasticity is in absolute terms. We conclude that export diversification by partner countries allows China to increase her 'resilience' to movements in its exchange rate. We extend the Frankel-Wei approach by using wavelet analysis to evaluate the relative importance of the dollar and the renminbi as anchor currencies at different time scales. We find that Asian currencies' co-movement with the dollar weakened after the global financial crisis, while that with the renminbi strengthened particularly after China introduced a new exchange rate management system in 2015. This article examines the importance of the U.S. dollar relative to other currencies in determining the renminbi value before and after an announcement of the exchange rate regime change by the People’s Bank of China. Test results reveal a discernible change in the exchange rate regime after the announcement and varying, yet dominant, weights of the U.S. dollar in the specified currency basket during postannouncement periods. Additionally, the presence and magnitude of the U.S. dollar weight in the long run appear to be related to the extent to which the renminbi fluctuates in the short run against the U.S. dollar. Motivated by the theoretical link between real exchange rates and oil prices, we utilize a univariate moving average (MA) and an augmented MA (A-MA) model to generate multi-period forecasts of China's real effective exchange rate for 2008–2018. The MA model utilizes past information in real exchange rates, and the A-MA model utilizes past information in both real exchange rates and oil prices. We show that the A-MA forecasts are unbiased and embody useful predictive information beyond that contained in the MA forecasts. In addition, the A-MA forecasts are directionally accurate under asymmetric loss. Such accurate forecasts are useful as inputs for policymakers to design an optimal real exchange rate policy to promote trade and attract foreign investment, and for foreign entities that regard China as an attractive environment for investing in various sectors. The Renminbi (RMB) exchange rate regime reform has gone through three stages roughly once every decade since 1994. It is a structural evolution through the unification of dual exchange rates, increased fluctuations and central parity rate reform in response to the dynamic macro environment in China and abroad. This paper unpacks leading and supporting reforms for each stage and reviews the effects. The reform has developed historical experience in adopting progressive strategies, avoiding sharp exchange rate fluctuations in the near term, maintaining appropriate capital controls, and guaranteeing the reform through domestic structural reforms. Achieving a free-floating exchange rate will be the ultimate goal, but it will not be made easily in the short run. During the transitional period, it is recommended that an annual target zone for RMB's effective exchange rate be arranged for the CFETS currency basket, along with necessary capital controls. China has experienced a rapid integration into Global Value Chains and a decade long appreciation of its exchange rate. However, these trends have been analysed largely in isolation from each other. In this paper, we explore the linkages between the two based on interviews with a sample of firms in Jiangsu Province. We show (1) how the distribution of the costs and benefits of exchange rate appreciation depends on the power hierarchies between firms in GVCs; (2) how exchange rate changes are important drivers of upgrading and even downgrading in GVCs; and (3) that the firm heterogeneity evident in GVCs provides additional insights into the politics of exchange rate determination in China. This paper separates the exchange rate effect of monetary sterilization from the scale effect as a rationale for a modification of the measure of sterilization rate. The Chinese episode for 2002–2012 is characterized by a robust trend both for renminbi to appreciate vis-à-vis the dollar and for net official foreign assets to grow, which relates two of four scenarios that I generally identify for possible sterilization responses to changes in the exchange rate and official net foreign assets. I find that the modified sterilization rate in China exhibits a sort of strong "hawkish bias" in which sterilization is more sensitive to the exchange rate appreciation than to its depreciation, on one hand, and to the growth of net official foreign assets than to its decline, on the other. While there is no econometric evidence for the "hawkish bias" in the long run, the significant evidence exists for the short-run asymmetry of sterilization adjustment to be biased more toward the hawkish side than dovish side. An increasing number of countries have launched their central bank digital currencies (CBDC) in recent years, but the economic impacts of CBDC adoption are underexplored. To empirically assess how CBDC adoption influences regional economic integration, this paper investigates the Greater Bay Area, where China carried out one of its first digital renminbi pilot programs. The Greater Bay Area provides a good example because the growing acceptance of digital renminbi in the area can potentially mitigate transaction costs and risks due to the exchange rate volatility of the Chinese renminbi, Hong Kong dollar, and Macao pataca. CBDC adoption can lead to greater real and financial integrations by facilitating cross-border trade in goods and services. This paper evaluates deviations from uncovered interest rate parity, purchasing power parity, and real interest rate parity across Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao based on monthly interest rate and price data from January 2016 to December 2022. The time series have mean values near zero, which validate the parity conditions and indicate high degrees of financial, real, and economic integrations. The Markov regime-switching regression model identifies three regimes: (1) pre-Covid, (2) post-Covid, and (3) post-CBDC. The Covid-19 outbreak brought lower integration and stability, but the launch of the CBDC restored some of the pre-Covid integration and stability. Regimes 1 and 2 are persistent, and transitions from Regime 3 back to Regime 1 are probable. This paper provides an alternative method to estimate the degree of RMB internationalization by combining the modified Frankel-Wei’s (1994, 2008) weight-inference technique and the state space model. Using a large sample of monthly exchange rate data of 54 economies, we estimate the dynamic currency weights of the U.S. dollar, Euro, RMB, Japanese yen and British pound. Results show that RMB has markedly increased since August 2015 as an international anchor currency, and then gradually decreased from June 2016 to December 2018. The currency weights ranked from highest to lowest are the U.S. dollar, Euro, RMB, British pound and Japanese yen for now. Furthermore, we also find that relative trade openness, capital account openness and exchange rate stability are the key drivers promoting the weight of the RMB. The above findings are robust to a battery of robustness tests. Our research contributes to the literature by providing a dynamic anchor currency weight estimation method and presenting a preliminary explanation for the changes of currency weight. This article is dedicated analyzing the interdependence of oil prices and exchange rate movements of oil exporting countries (the Russian ruble, Euro, Canadian dollar, Chinese yuan, Brazil real, Nigerian naira, Algerian dinar). The study also considers risk-based oil market spillovers in global crisis periods with integrated decision recommendation systems. For this purpose, a fuzzy decision-making model is created by considering the bipolar model and imputation of expert evaluations with collaborative filtering. The main contribution of this study is both its econometric analysis and evaluations based on expert opinions. This helps reach more crucial results. All three of the recent shocks (2008, 2012, 2020) in the oil market are transmitted to foreign exchange markets of oil-producing countries. At the same time, the last shock of 2020 caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has not yet been fully reflected on the Russian ruble exchange rate. Correlation parameters became weaker in the last year, as the Russian ruble correlation coefficient fluctuates between − 0.5 and 0.5. However, before 2020 the spillover effect had a higher significance (in the range from − 0.8 to − 0.1). According to the article, the US has fared better than China in terms of economic recovery from the pandemic, with GDP surpassing pre-pandemic forecasts while China has struggled due to structural issues like a property slump. As a result, China's economy is unlikely to match the size of the US economy until the mid-2030s, and living standards in China will remain lower than those in the US. Long-term growth forecasts for China show a decelerating growth path, with GDP growth expected to fall to around 2% by 2040. There are also risks to Chinese growth, including the property sector slump and the potential impact of trade and technological decoupling. Additionally, there are concerns that official Chinese GDP data may overstate the country's economic performance. The up‐and‐coming influence of the RMB on currency co‐movements is examined in this paper, in the context of a transpiring tri‐polar international monetary system advocated in prior studies. The study is empirically conducted against the backdrop of a more variable RMB exchange rate regime, which enables the integration of the RMB into the international monetary system. The influence of the RMB is found most evident in Asia, being modest in Latin America while reaching Africa. The RMB co‐moves most with the currencies of countries that have large shares in trade with China considerably. Meanwhile, a residual‐based instrumental variables model is proposed in this study purposely for dealing with issues of common factor dominance, which prevails in currency co‐movements. The emerging influence of the RMB on currency co‐movements arises at the time when a multiple‐reserve currency system is coming, and the RMB is included as the third largest currency in the SDR basket. It is shored up by the improved infrastructure, strengthened central bank cooperation and expanded networks for cross‐border RMB payments and settlements. It is concluded that the RMB has increasingly integrated into the international monetary system as one of the major players, effecting currency market movements actively alongside the US dollar and euro. China is transitioning its industrial structure from labor-and resource-intensive industries that previously contributed significantly to the country's GDP growth to technology-intensive industries emphasizing a highly-skilled workforce and sustainability to achieve high-quality economic growth. This paper examines the impact of the RMB exchange rate on high-quality economic growth through theoretical modeling and empirical analysis and discusses the variable of overseas education to explore the mechanism of how the RMB exchange rate and overseas education jointly impact high-quality economic growth. The research sample includes the National Bureau of Statistics data on education from 1995 to 2015, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) data on the RMB exchange rate, and the added value of China's high-quality economic growth estimated based on the national economy data. An empirical analysis of theoretical expectations was conducted, finding that RMB appreciation could make a positive contribution to China's high-quality economic growth; RMB exchange rate fluctuations would impact the relative cost of overseas education and overseas returnees could have a positive impact on domestic resource utilization efficiency and domestic capacity to make sci-tech innovations, thereby injecting vitality to high-quality economic growth. The real bilateral exchange rate between Korean won and Chinese yuan is a crucial factor in balancing trade between Korea and China and has implications for both academics and policymakers. Prior research using symmetry hypotheses on bilateral trade and its heterogeneity among industries is limited. This study re‐examines the symmetric and asymmetric J‐curve phenomenon between them, employing the linear and nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag models. It considered the January 2008–June 2022 trade balance of 75 industries. This analysis shows support for the symmetric (asymmetric) J‐curve in 4 of 12 industries from the linear (nonlinear) model, accounting for 58.55% of the total trade between Korea and China. Using the DCC‐GARCH model, this study considers distinctive features of China's foreign exchange market to investigate the impacts of RMB internationalization on exchange rates in onshore and offshore markets in different stages during 2010–2017. The results show that policies concerning RMB internationalization, such as interest rate liberalization, exchange rate liberalization, and capital market internationalization, have different impacts on the central parity rate, onshore exchange rate, and offshore exchange rate. In terms of exchange rate liberalization, as the daily trading band was gradually widened in 2012–2015, the onshore exchange rate followed the offshore exchange rate more closely. The central parity rate functioned as a managed floating role. It stabilized onshore and offshore exchange rate fluctuations, while allowing partial marketization. After the exchange rate reform on August 11, 2015, the central parity rate plays a benchmark role based on a more market‐oriented price formation mechanism. It makes the central parity rate regain pricing power in onshore and offshore markets. Further, it promotes exchange rate liberalization and RMB internationalization. Nevertheless, with the slowdown of China's economic growth and the narrowing of the interest rate differential between China and the US, the RMB is under pressure to depreciate, and its volatility increases significantly. Abstract: We introduce a gravity model to the currency choice for cross‐border trade settlement and the Heckman selection model to estimate the impact of the exchange rate on the cross‐border trade settlement of the Renminbi (RMB). We analyse bilateral exchange rates using panel data of China and 182 RMB settlement countries, or areas, from 2009 to 2014. We find that, regardless the choice stage or scale stage of RMB cross‐border trade settlement, the appreciation of the RMB does not necessarily promote RMB cross‐border trade settlement. This result holds when we take geographic differences into account and split the settlement of cross‐border trade into merchandise and service trade. We further investigate the channels through which exchange rate influences the cross‐border trade settlement of RMB, and we find that the appreciation of RMB impedes enterprises from choosing RMB as their settlement currency by reducing the scale of export to RMB settlement areas, whereas it speeds up RMB cross‐border trade settlement by increasing the scale of China's import from RMB settlement areas. We find that China's economic strength supports the development of RMB cross‐border trade settlement. However, the geographical distance between China and the RMB settlement areas may inhibit cross‐border trade settlement in RMB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article investigates the linkages among the onshore-offshore exchange rate differential, interest rate spreads, and Hong Kong’s RMB deposits (a proxy for RMB internationalization), based on a structural vector autoregression model. We find that this differential and the spreads have significant effects on Hong Kong’s RMB deposits, but the rise in the spreads will lead to a decline in offshore RMB deposits in Hong Kong. The differential is a stronger factor than spread shocks in explaining fluctuations in Hong Kong’s RMB deposits. This paper studies China's recent exchange rate policy for the renminbi (RMB). We demonstrate empirically that a two‐pillar policy is in place, aiming to balance exchange rate flexibility and RMB index stability via market and basket pillars. We further extend and validate the formulation that incorporates the so‐called countercyclical factor. Theoretically, we develop a flexible‐price monetary model for the RMB in which the two‐pillar policy arises endogenously as an optimal response of the government. To play the role of a unit of account, an international currency must be a currency widely used to invoice international trade. This paper investigates the determinants of the use of currencies in trade invoicing and evaluates the potential of the renminbi for the denomination of cross-border transactions in the Asia-Pacific region. In particular, we develop a simple model and establish the evidence showing that there is a convex relationship between the invoicing share of a currency and the economic size of its issuing country because of a coalescing effect and thick market externalities. We use the ratio of the foreign exchange ( FX) turnover share of a currency to the global GDP share of its issuing country as a proxy for the size of thick market externalities, which we argue reflects capital account openness, financial development and exchange rate stability of the country. This ratio is very small for the renminbi compared with the ratios for established international currencies. Our quantitative analysis suggests that the renminbi can be a major invoicing currency in the region only if China sufficiently opens up its capital account and liberalises its financial sector. We also draw a parallel between the renminbi and the euro and forecast the invoicing share of the renminbi in the Asia-Pacific region if the renminbi market attained the same degree of thickness as the euro. This paper investigates the asymmetries in arbitrage trading with onshore and offshore renminbi spot rates, focusing on the time-varying driving factors behind the deviations of the two rates from their long-run equilibrium. Fundamentally, offshore and onshore renminbi rates represent the same economic quantity and hence should be driven by the same pricing mechanism. However, the two exchange rates deviate remarkably from each other, creating arbitrage opportunities over many days. For the empirical analysis, I build a three-regime threshold vector error correction model with offshore and onshore spot rates and further regime-dependent explanatory variables. The model is estimated in different periods in order to consider the impact of appreciation and depreciation expectations on possible arbitrage trading. The estimation results suggest that directional expectations, global risk sentiment and local as well as global liquidity conditions dominate the adjustment process in the absence of arbitrage trading when the offshore rate is stronger than its onshore counterpart. However, the error correction mechanism of the offshore (onshore) rate towards its equilibrium with the onshore (offshore) rate is driven by the arbitrage trading due to a relatively weaker (stronger) offshore (onshore) rate in the upper regime in times of appreciation (depreciation) expectations.
