This paper presents a novel consequent-pole hybrid brushless wound-rotor synchronous machine (CPH-BL-WRSM). The proposed machine employs permanent magnets (PMs) on the alternate poles of the salient pole rotor, which has considerably less magnet usage compared to the regular (PM) assisted synchronous machine. The proposed CPH-BL-WRSM offered the advantages of high starting torque, high torque density, and better performance under full-load conditions. The BL operation for the proposed machine is achieved by generating a composite magneto motive force (MMF) with a fundamental component and sub-harmonic component. The sub-harmonic component of the stator MMF is used for BL excitation of the rotor. The finite-element method was used to analyze the performance of the CPH-BL-WRSM in comparison with the performance of the existing BL-WRSM and regular PM-assisted BL-WRSM. This paper investigates the influence of stator/rotor pole number combinations and permanent magnet (PM) numbers on electromagnetic performance of consequent-pole hybrid excited flux reversal machines (CP-HEFRMs), which have different numbers of PM poles and iron poles and concentrated AC and DC windings on the stator and a salient pole rotor. PMs in the slots of one stator pole are magnetized radially in the same direction, while opposite on adjacent stator poles. Magnetic field paths of DC, PM, and hybrid excitations are investigated. The phenomenon of flux cancellation, i.e., PM and DC MMFs in CP-HEFRMs are of opposite polarities in the flux-enhancing operating mode, is revealed and verified, for the first time, as the key feature that makes CP-HEFRMs different from other hybrid excited machines. Consequently, the saturation in stator pole and yoke can be mitigated and hence the overload capability of DC excitation is enhanced, which is verified by finite element analysis (FEA). Global optimizations are utilized to obtain the optimal rotor and stator pole number combinations and PM numbers for each stator pole. Torque, torque ripple, inductance, unbalanced magnetic force, and flux regulation capability are compared for different PM numbers and rotor pole numbers. Comparisons are made on consequent-pole and non-consequent-pole topologies in terms of torque capacity, flux regulation capability, and PM consumption to further illustrate the advantages of consequent-pole topology. Slotless permanent magnet machines are attractive in some modern drive and power generation fields, where the cogging torque and additional losses need to be minimized or removed. The stator slotless design can be combined with different surface permanent magnet (SPM) rotor topologies. In this paper, explicit analytical expressions are derived to analytically compute the slotless machine torque and no-load back Electro-Motive Force in the case of segmented SPM rotor with parallel, radial, or Halbach-array magnetization patterns. The expressions are found by solving the magnetic field due to the slotless stator winding and to the permanent magnet blocks; the latter modeled through equivalent surface current densities. The accuracy of the method is successfully assessed by comparison with the finite-element analysis (FEA). The proposed formulas are an effective alternative to the FEA to quickly compare different design solutions as well as to optimize them. This paper is about the mechanical design and analysis of a yokeless and segmented armature axial flux permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous machine, which consists of two external rotors and an inner stator. Although this new electrical machine has many advantages such as high torque density, shorter axial length, and high efficiency, its mechanical construction is yet challenging. This is mostly due to the high axial force between the stator and the two rotors, which can be further increased by the inevitable manufacturing and assembly tolerances. Based on the determined geometric dimensions of the electromagnetically relevant components, a reliable mechanical construction is developed in this paper. Subsequently, stress, deformation, thermal, and modal analyses are performed based on finite-element method (FEM). Finally, the first prototype is successfully manufactured and measured. Asymmetric interior permanent magnet (AIPM) rotor topologies can achieve torque enhancement in IPM synchronous machines without the increase of PM usage due to utilizing magnetic-field-shifting (MFS) effect by reducing the current angle difference between maximum PM and reluctance torque components. This paper investigates the influence of armature reaction on MFS effect in AIPM machines. A general model of IPM machines considering MFS effect is analytically developed and the AIPM and IPM machines using the same stator, rotor diameter and total PM amount are comparatively studied. It shows that the armature reaction affects the MFS effect in both AIPM and IPM machines and the influence is more significant in AIPM machine. The relationships between MFS effects in PM flux-linkage and inductance characteristics and current angles for maximum PM and reluctance torque components are revealed. It confirms that the change of current angles of torque components is due to the MFS effect in PM flux-linkage and inductance characteristics in both AIPM and IPM machines. Besides, the developed machine model considering MFS effect is verified by finite element analysis. A novel asymmetric interior permanent magnet (AIPM) machine is proposed in this paper for electric vehicle application. It has a skewed V-shape permanent magnet (PM) cavity, two PMs with different dimensions and an additional flux barrier outside the V-shape cavity in each pole. This asymmetric rotor topology can inherently utilize the magnetic-field-shifting (MFS) effect to reduce the current angle difference between the maximum PM and reluctance torque components, thereby enhancing the maximum synthetic torque with the same PM usage. The influences of cavity positions in the proposed AIPM and an existing AIPM with extra flux barrier inside the V-shape cavity are investigated and compared using finite element analysis. It is found that the proposed structure with outside flux barrier has higher average torque than the one with inside flux barrier. Both AIPM topologies are designed with the same stator, rotor diameter, and PM usage as the conventional V-shape IPM benchmark for Prius 2010. Electromagnetic, mechanical and steady-state thermal performance of three machines are compared. The results confirm that the proposed AIPM machine can achieve significant torque enhancement due to utilizing MFS effect, compared with the existing AIPM and the IPM benchmark. This paper proposes a new yokeless linear flux-switching permanent magnet (LFSPM) machine topology with double magnets per mover module for maximizing thrust density. The optimization and analysis for the proposed yokeless LFSPM machine are carried out by the finite-element method. The comparison between the proposed yokeless LFSPM machine and the optimized conventional yokeless machine under the same constraints is conducted, showing that the proposed machine exhibits higher thrust density and low force ripple, while the product of power factor and efficiency of the new machine is marginally higher than that of the conventional yokeless machine. The transverse-flux linear switched-flux permanent magnet machine is investigated by 3-D finite-element analysis in this paper. The topology of the machine, as well as the machine operation principle, is introduced first. In order to improve the thrust force performance of the machine, two aspects are analyzed. One is the average thrust force, which is maximized by optimizing the mover stack length and the stator pole stack length. Not only does the average thrust force increase, but the force ripple slightly decreases as well. The other side is further lowering the force ripple. The segment group shift method is introduced and employed. After using this method, the force ripple has been reduced to an acceptable value, though the average thrust force will be slightly reduced. In this paper, a vernier permanent magnet (VPM) machine with dual-rotor toroidal-winding axial-flux topology is analyzed. Through the combination of toroidal windings with the rotor-stator-rotor topology, the end winding length of the proposed machine is significantly reduced compared with that of the regular VPM machine. Based on the airgap permeance function, the back-EMF and torque expressions are derived and the nature of the machine is revealed. The influence of pole ratio (ratio of rotor pole pair number to stator pole pair number) and main geometric parameters, such as slot opening, magnet thickness, etc., on electromagnetic performance is then analytically investigated in detail. Both the quasi-three-dimensional (quasi-3D) finite element analysis (FEA) and 3-D FEA are applied to verify the derived equations. Finally, a prototype of the proposed machine has been manufactured and experimentally evaluated. The test results agree well with both theoretical and FEA analyses. With the current density of 5.8 A/mm 2 and slot fill factor of 0.35, the torque density of the proposed machine prototype can reach 31.9 kNm/m 3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the no-load and the on-load behavior of a fractional-slot tubular-linear permanent magnet synchronous machine (T-LPMSM). The study is initiated by the selection of the machine slot-pole combination. To do so, a formulation of the air gap flux density, based on the solution of the magnetic potential vector equation in the air gap and in the PM regions, is derived. The electromagnetic model allows the prediction of the phase back electromotive forces (EMFs) and of the cogging force. The effect of the slot-pole combination on these features is then considered to the aim of the optimal selection of the slot per pole and per phase. A case study considering the optimized slot per pole and per phase number is treated where the analytically predicted no-load features are validated by finite element analysis (FEA). A dual-stator hybrid-excited switched-flux (DS-HESF) machine, which is based on the conventional SF permanent magnet machine but employs a secondary stator to accommodate the field windings, is proposed in this paper. The DS-HESF machine inherits the robust rotor and benefits from a better space utilization. The topology and operating principle of the proposed machine are introduced in detail. Based on the 2-D finite-element analysis, the comparison between the DS-HESF machines having different rotor pole numbers is carried out, accompanied with a conventional HESF machine as a baseline. The results reveal that the DS-HESF machines exhibit not only higher torque density but also a better flux regulation capability. The prototype is manufactured and tested to validate the predictions. This paper proposes a novel flux reversal linear-rotary permanent magnet actuator (FR-LRPMA) with permanent magnets (PMs) mounted on the stator surface. The proposed FR-LRPMA uses only 50% of the PM materials when compared with that of the topology with four-PM poles in a conventional stator pole actuator. The FR-LRPMA provides a pathway for the magnetic field, which is generated by currents in the armature winding, resulting in substantial reduction in the possibility of irreversible demagnetization of the PMs to increase its torque density. According to the physics of PM demagnetization, a simplified fitting analytical expression, which considers the angular velocity, current, temperature, and PM thickness, is derived to determine the least work point of the PM. The torque prediction using the proposed algorithm at different currents agrees well with the values calculated using a finite-element method. In this paper, based on 2-D finite-element analysis (FEA), the hybrid-excitation principle of a hybrid-excitation flux-switching (HEFS) machine is analyzed, and consequently, an improved topology is proposed to enhance the flux-regulation capability. These two machines are termed as the basic HEFS machine and the improved HEFS machine, respectively. In the basic HEFS machine, each permanent magnet (PM) is located at the middle of the corresponding slot and wound by a field winding coil. When field excitation is applied, it is found that the currents in the two field slots adjoining each PM exhibit reversal excitation functions, thus reversal flux-regulation functions. Hence, to improve the flux-regulation performances, an improved HEFS topology is proposed based on the basic one by reversing current direction in one of the field slots. Therefore, the improved topology shares identical structure with the basic one but has different field current directions in some field slots and thus different field winding accommodations. Comparisons of the FEA predictions indicated that both armature no-load flux-regulation capability and armature load torque capability in the improved HEFS machine are much better than those in the basic one. The fault-tolerant capabilities are compared in this paper for the conventional double-layer switched-flux permanent-magnet machine and its single-layer counterparts, i.e., C-core, E-core, and modular. The comparison includes the interturn short-circuit and irreversible demagnetization faults. A combination of Simulink and finite element models is used in the study. Based on the predictions, it is found that the modular topology produces the lowest short-circuit current and also has the best demagnetization withstand capability while the conventional one produces the highest short-circuit current and has the worst demagnetization withstand capability. The frozen permeability method is employed to separate the flux produced by armature current and magnets, and the results showed that, besides the influence of short-circuit current, the available magnet volume and magnetic circuit configuration play an important role in the demagnetization process. It is also found that removing half of the magnets, such as using C-core, E-core, and modular topologies, generally improves the demagnetization withstand capability and also increases the torque per magnet volume. Variable reluctance resolvers (VRRs) have been widely used for rotor position detection in harsh working conditions. However, conventional installation of VRRs inevitably occupies the axial space of machine systems, and may weaken the reliability of rotor position detection encountering shock and vibration. In this article, a novel VRR structure with inner stator is investigated, which is radially integrated inside a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) to construct compact machine topology. The hybrid machine topology is first discussed, and detailed electromagnetic design is carried out. Improved analytical analysis on air gap flux density distribution and inductance evaluation of the integrated VRR is derived based on modified winding function approach, and testified by finite element analysis. In this article, two double flux modulation permanent-magnet machines (DFMPMs) with PMs on both stator and rotor are introduced. The two DFMPMs share a similar operation principle. However, due to the different stator-PM arrangements, the two DFMPMs show different performances. In order to analyze their performance characteristics, their analytical models are built and verified by finite element analysis (FEA). Moreover, to quantitatively compare their electromagnetic performances more accurately, the two DFMPM topologies are optimized, respectively, and compared in terms of back-EMF, cogging torque,rated torque, torque ripple, power factor, and efficiency. This article investigates a hybrid-excited doubly salient permanent magnet linear machine (HDSPMLM) with dc-biased armature current. With the adoption of integrated open winding, dc bias can be achieved by zero-sequence current, which helps to enhance the dc excitation and further highly improves the thrust force density. First, the machine topology and drive circuit are described. By injecting the dc currents into the armature windings with special arrangement, the dc field windings in conventional HDSPMLM can be eliminated, where the phase currents are dc-biased sinusoidal currents. Then, magnetomotive force-permeance model is built to analytically calculate the air gap hybrid-excited field harmonics, and further verified by finite element analysis. Moreover, the flux linkage, back-electromotive force, and static force-current characteristics between the proposed and conventional HDSPMLMs are comparatively studied. Thanks to the improved exciting field and armature magneto-motive force with integrated open winding, the thrust force capability can be significantly enhanced by 85.5% on the premise of rated power dissipation. This article presents a comprehensive design methodology to improve the field weakening (FW) operation of low inductance slotless permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs). The proposed concept of using a stator embedded inductor integrated with the torque producing machine windings helps achieve a wide constant power speed range (CPSR) and a desired torque/speed characteristics. Key performance parameters including system efficiency and PWM induced current ripple are summarized for scenarios with and without the embedded inductor in the entire operating range using 2-D finite element analysis. The concept helps to achieve the desirable extended torque/speed range. It also helps to improve the efficiency beyond the base speed operation for a high speed, high power machine. In addition to achieving desired CPSR, this method also helps to reduce the PWM induced current ripple, short circuit current, and current ripple induced core losses. A slotless machine with the integrated embedded inductor has been designed following the proposed design guidelines to extend the CPSR, and a prototype motor has been built to validate the simulation results with the experimental results. Hybrid excited (HE) machines have the synergies of high torque density and high efficiency of permanent magnet (PM) machines and excellent flux controllability of wound-field machines. The PMs and field coils (FCs) coexist in HE machines to provide excitations simultaneously, and can be coupled either in series or parallel. The topologies of HE machines are very diverse, which bring challenges in the selection and design of HE machines. Based on the partitioned stator (PS) platform, a pair of series and parallel HE machines having similar structures and PM usage are evaluated and compared to identify their merits and demerits. With the help of finite element analysis, the flux regulation, energy conversion capability, parasitic effects and irreversible demagnetization of the two kinds of the HE machines are comprehensively investigated and the guidance to the machine design is provided.
