This paper employs an overhang structure for axial flux permanent magnet motor to enhance the torque density. However, the overhang structure requires a computationally expensive 3-D finite-element method (FEM) for analysis, because a quasi-3-D FEM cannot be applied to such a geometry. Thus, in order to reduce the computational cost of above-mentioned topology, this paper adopts a field reconstruction method (FRM). The conventional FRM is applicable only in the case, where the slot pitch to teeth length ratio is the same along radial direction. To address this problem, we introduce a virtual air gap concept so that it can take into account parallel slot effect as well as overhang effect. This paper aims to analyze the characteristics of a surface permanent-magnet Vernier motor (SPMVM) according to the pole ratio among the rotor magnet pole pairs, stator teeth, and winding pole number. The SPMVM has the same operational principle as a magnetic gear, and it is operated using the space harmonics of the air-gap flux density due to the magnetomotive force and air-gap permeance. In this paper, first, the design parameters of the SPMVM are specified based on an analytical calculation of the air-gap magnetic flux density. Moreover, various combinations of the rotor magnet pole pairs and stator teeth number are made and compared according to the operational principle of a Vernier motor using a 2-D finite-element method. Double-Sided Linear Flux-Switching Permanent Magnet (DSLFSPM) motor has the merits of high efficiency, high power factor and low-cost stator structure. But the speed range of DSLFSPM is limited due to its adoption of permanent magnets. Double-Sided High Temperature Superconducting Linear Flux-Switching Motor (DSHTS-LFSM) adopts HTS coils to replace the permanent magnets, thus obtaining better power density and wider speed range. However, when the magnetic field gets much stronger, the iron core is easily saturated and flux leakage gets serious, which threatens the reliability of HTS coils and lowers the utilization of iron core. To solve this problem, a novel Double-Sided High Temperature Superconducting Linear Modular Flux-Switching Motor (DSHTS-LMFSM) is proposed. The armature windings are designed different from existing DSHTS-LFSMs to reduce flux leakage. Furthermore, by sealing the HTS coils together in a Dewar away from armature windings, the reliability is improved. In this paper, the structure and working principle of the proposed DSHTS-LMFSM is explained. The electromagnetic performance of it is calculated using Finite Element Method (FEM). This paper is about the mechanical design and analysis of a yokeless and segmented armature axial flux permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous machine, which consists of two external rotors and an inner stator. Although this new electrical machine has many advantages such as high torque density, shorter axial length, and high efficiency, its mechanical construction is yet challenging. This is mostly due to the high axial force between the stator and the two rotors, which can be further increased by the inevitable manufacturing and assembly tolerances. Based on the determined geometric dimensions of the electromagnetically relevant components, a reliable mechanical construction is developed in this paper. Subsequently, stress, deformation, thermal, and modal analyses are performed based on finite-element method (FEM). Finally, the first prototype is successfully manufactured and measured. In this paper, three partitioned-stator (PS) machines, namely the PS flux-switching permanent-magnet (PS-FSPM) machine, the PS-FS hybrid-excitation machine, and the flux adjuster PS-FSPM (FA-PS-FSPM) machine are proposed for the hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Owing to the installation of additional inner-stators, all three proposed machines can offer satisfactory power and torque densities. In particular, the FA-PS-FSPM machine artfully utilizes its inner space to accommodate the mechanical FAs, such that outstanding flux-weakening capability for wide-speed range operation can be achieved. This paper proposes a novel flux reversal linear-rotary permanent magnet actuator (FR-LRPMA) with permanent magnets (PMs) mounted on the stator surface. The proposed FR-LRPMA uses only 50% of the PM materials when compared with that of the topology with four-PM poles in a conventional stator pole actuator. The FR-LRPMA provides a pathway for the magnetic field, which is generated by currents in the armature winding, resulting in substantial reduction in the possibility of irreversible demagnetization of the PMs to increase its torque density. According to the physics of PM demagnetization, a simplified fitting analytical expression, which considers the angular velocity, current, temperature, and PM thickness, is derived to determine the least work point of the PM. The torque prediction using the proposed algorithm at different currents agrees well with the values calculated using a finite-element method. In this paper, based on 2-D finite-element analysis (FEA), the hybrid-excitation principle of a hybrid-excitation flux-switching (HEFS) machine is analyzed, and consequently, an improved topology is proposed to enhance the flux-regulation capability. These two machines are termed as the basic HEFS machine and the improved HEFS machine, respectively. In the basic HEFS machine, each permanent magnet (PM) is located at the middle of the corresponding slot and wound by a field winding coil. When field excitation is applied, it is found that the currents in the two field slots adjoining each PM exhibit reversal excitation functions, thus reversal flux-regulation functions. Hence, to improve the flux-regulation performances, an improved HEFS topology is proposed based on the basic one by reversing current direction in one of the field slots. Therefore, the improved topology shares identical structure with the basic one but has different field current directions in some field slots and thus different field winding accommodations. Comparisons of the FEA predictions indicated that both armature no-load flux-regulation capability and armature load torque capability in the improved HEFS machine are much better than those in the basic one. This paper investigates an original solution that can be used in the design of axial-flux permanent-magnet (AFPM) machines whenever a constrained shaft height requirement penalizes a standard design. A machine is tailored for electrical traction, but the ideas that are set forth are valid for any application with a constrained shaft height. Two design solutions that comply with a constrained shaft height are investigated, i.e., a standard Torus AFPM machine and an asymmetrically wound Torus machine, which is named “Ω AFPM” due to the shape of the stator winding. It is shown that the Ω AFPM machine has lower losses and higher efficiency. Finite-element simulations and experimental tests on a full-scale prototype confirm the validity of the proposed solution. An analytical model is proposed for the prediction of electromagnetic quantities of slotted flux-reversal permanent magnet (FRPM) machines. Equivalent current theory is used to model the effects of permanent magnets (PMs), stator slots and rotor grooves. First, the stator slots and rotor grooves are nullified and the Poisson equation is solved in a slotless stator and cylindrical rotor machine. The effects of the stator slots and rotor grooves are then considered by injecting equivalent magnetization currents (EMCs) respectively on the stator slots wall and on the rotor groove edges. Due to the high torque capability, axial flux (AF) permanent-magnet (PM) machines are an interesting solution for direct driven wind energy conversion systems and low-speed motors. However, the structure of such machines makes them sensitive to geometrical imperfections due to manufacturing process. This paper analyzes the effects that various types of geometrical imperfections produce in concentrated coil AF PM generators. In particular, a case study is presented, where the mechanical stresses, the resulting axial force, and the bending torques on the shaft, as well as the circulation current in the winding parallel paths, are calculated. The results obtained by means of an analytical approach are compared with those based on finite element method simulations and are validated by some experimental results on a prototype. A novel gearless and brushless power-split transmission system is proposed for a variable speed constant frequency wind power generation application. The key is to design a special hybrid axial–radial flux focusing structure, which has an improved utilization of permanent magnet (PM) materials. This design integrates the merits of two popular concepts—the direct-drive PM generator and the doubly fed induction generator. It is direct driven, with high torque density and in the meanwhile, it needs only a partial-scale converter. To improve the stability of the system, five phase currents are used for the control winding. A time stepping finite-element method is used to analyze the dynamic performance of the proposed system. Recently, linear permanent magnet vernier machine (LPMVM) is attracting more and more attention due to its high thrust density, high efficiency, and simple structure at low-speed operation, which makes it a preferable solution for direct-drive linear motion applications. In order to further reduce the thrust ripple and the cost of LPMVM, a novel consequent-pole modular-mover LPMVM (CM-LPMVM) is proposed and analyzed in this article. Due to the dual-flux-modulation effect, the proposed CM-LPMVM can exhibit a low thrust ripple (∼3.2% of the average thrust) and high thrust density (∼387 kN/m3) at a low current density of 3 A/mm2, as well as reduce nearly half of the PM usage at the same time. The performance improvement of the proposed CM-LPMVM is verified by the comparison to a regular modular-mover LPMVMs, using the finite-element method. Finally, three prototypes are built and tested. This article investigates the total demagnetization fault in Axial Flux Permanent Magnet (AFPM) synchronous generator, suitable for wind power applications, using the three-dimensional Finite Element Method (3D-FEM). The machine, in which the demagnetization diagnosis has been investigated, consists of one coreless stator with concentrating winding, embed in resin and two rotors. In the current study, faulty cases of different number and relative position of total demagnetized magnets are studied. Finally, simulation results are compared to experimental results for validation. The stator current spectrum is studied as fault identification mean and it is shown that the fault signatures depend on the number of total demagnetized magnets, the relative position of the magnets on the rotor and the stator winding topology. In addition, there is an investigation of the partial demagnetization fault for comparison purposes. Moreover, analytical expressions for the magnetic flux density in the healthy case and in every faulty case are exported. This article proposes a novel structure of consequent pole dual rotor permanent magnet vernier machine (CPDRVM). This structure consists of dual-sided stator in which windings are placed on the stator slots and magnets placed on the inner and outer rotor slots. Operation principles of the proposed VM carried out using flux modulation theory. The Finite Element analysis is utilized in order to evaluate the effect of magnet geometry on the produced torque and power factor. The motor characteristics and performance assessment are performed numerically. Furthermore, the parametric and sensitivity analysis are used to optimize the motor geometry. The proposed VM compared with PM machine and two conventional VMs. In this regard, performance indices such as flux, cogging torque, power factor, magnet volume, torque per magnet volume, Back-EMF, losses and efficiency profiles are calculated and compared. Results evidence better performance of the proposed structure. The article deals with designing rotor disks of a double-sided axial flux permanent magnet machine, based on their deflection, due to the pull forces between opposite rotor disks, caused by the permanent magnets. Permanent magnets cause the magnetic flux density to flow between the permanent magnets on opposite rotor disks and its size determines the size of the pull force. That is why it is essential to determine the size of the axial component of magnetic flux density in the middle of the clearance between opposite rotor disks (fictitious air gap) in order to calculate the deflection of the rotor disks. The article presents a new method for determining the size of the axial component of magnetic flux density, based on a simplified finite element method and an approximation method as well as modified equations for determining the deflection of rotor disks. The method is used to determine the pull forces between rotor disks and based on the deflection of the disks an optimum rotor disk thickness can be selected in order to reduce the weight of the machine. This article presents the design and analysis of a 12/7 (numbers of stator/rotor poles) hybridly excited asymmetric stator pole doubly salient machine (HEASPDSM) with a main focus on the special topology and operational principle by using the analytical and 2-D finite element analysis. A full comparison is conducted on the average torque, torque ripples, no-load back electromotive force and flux regulation capacity under the condition of different structural parameters, which can provide good references to the machine design. A 12/7 HEASPDSM is designed and the main performance indexes are analyzed in detail. Based on the parameters, the performance of 12/7 HEASPDSM is compared with traditional 6/7 doubly salient permanent magnet machine (DSPMM) with the same volume and thermal load. Finally, a prototype of the 12/7 HEASPDSM is manufactured and tested to validate the theoretical analysis. The results fully demonstrate that the HEASPDSM possesses the merits of strong flux regulation capability, higher torque density, and wider constant power speed range benefitted from the dc field winding than the traditional DSPMM. Transverse flux permanent magnet (TFPM) machine possesses the characteristic feature of decoupled electric load and magnetic load to obtain high power density. A novel TFPM generator (TFPMG) with double C-hoop stator and flux-concentrated rotor is proposed for low-speed applications, such as direct-drive power generation, which has larger torque capability and more poles than traditional double-side TFPMGs. The structure and operation principles of the generator are described in detail. The 3-D finite-element method (3-D FEM) is employed to compute the no-load magnetic field distributions. The analytical results, including flux density waveform, electromotive force (EMF) waveform, and inductance waveform of the armature winding, are obtained to verify the principle and feasibility of the proposed generator. The cogging torque is also analyzed and optimized by the 3-D FEM. A prototype is fabricated, and some experiments are conducted.
