In this study, two types of composites, polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and epoxy resin (ER), reinforced with 20% of glass fiber (GF) are used as the comparative research objects. Their mechanical properties after thermal aging at 85~145 °C are evaluated by tensile strength and fracture morphology analysis. The results show that the composites have similar aging laws. The tensile strength of GF/PBT and GF/ER decrease gradually with the increase of aging temperature, while their elastic moduli are independent of the thermal treatment temperature. Scanning electron microscopy study of the fracture surface shows that separation of glass fiber from PBT and ER matrix becomes more obvious at higher aging temperature. The fibers on the matrix surface appear clear and smooth, and the whole pulled out GFs can be observed. As a main mechanical strength degradation mechanism, the deterioration of interface adhesion between the matrix and GF is discussed. A large difference in coefficients of thermal expansion of the matrix and GF is a main factor of the mechanical degradation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we compare the effect of various precursor‐based graphene oxide (GO) nanofillers on enhancing the mechanical performance of E‐glass fiber‐reinforced epoxy resin composites (EGFPs). GO derived from bituminous coal (BC‐GO) and graphite (Gr‐GO) were dispersed into an epoxy resin matrix. The resulting mixture was combined with E‐glass fiber mats using vacuum‐assisted resin infusion molding. Notable improvements (38.9% in flexural strength, 22.9% in tensile strength, and 21.6% in impact strength) were observed in BC‐GO‐reinforced EGFPs at 0.25 phr loading of BC‐GO. The improvements for Gr‐GO‐reinforced EGFPs were 28%, 9.3%, and 6.8%, respectively. XRD analysis of BC‐GO showed a diffraction peak at 2θ = 20.9°. Except for this peak, no other crystalline peaks were observed when BC‐GO was incorporated into EGFPs. FTIR spectra of both composite samples, with or without the nanofiller, were similar due to the spectral peaks overlap. TEM demonstrated the exfoliated morphology of BC‐GO in EGFPs. These findings underscore the potential of BC‐GO as a cost‐effective reinforcement for polymer nanocomposites across various industrial applications, including the development of lightweight and strong materials for aerospace and automotive industries, protective coatings, petroleum, and aerospace production systems. Fiber-reinforced polymer composites are manufactured using various methods, with vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM or VARIM). This study's primary focus lies in assessing how the orientation of sampling impacts the mechanical properties of glass fiber-reinforced pure and nanocomposites. 2 wt.% nano Al2O3- doped and non-doped composites were produced using the VARTM process. Tensile, flexural, and density test specimens were extracted from three distinct zones and two distinc direction those aligned horizontally to the resin flow (HRF) and those oriented vertically to the resin flow (VRF). Remarkably, results showed up to a 3.91% increase in values from samples in the third zone, particularly on the vacuum outlet side. Glass fiber‐reinforced polymer‐matrix (GFRP) composites are used to manufacture devices such as radomes, electrical insulators, and radar‐absorbing structures, many of which are used in applications with strict mechanical and dielectric property requirements. As such, designs and properties of GFRP composite materials should be regularly improved to guarantee their safe operation and meet their constantly evolving application requirements. In this study, glass fiber (GF) particles and epoxy resin 128 (EP‐128) were used to manufacture high‐performance EP/GF‐X composites with GF particle contents ranging from 5% to 40%. An investigation into their mechanical and dielectric properties revealed that EP/GF‐20 composite specimens presented the best mechanical performance with their bending strength and modulus reaching 159.68 MPa and 6521.92 MPa, respectively, and an average dielectric constant of 4.862 within the 10–105 Hz frequency range. A theoretical analysis of the EP/GF‐X composite specimens' dielectric constants using classic dielectric models based on the Lichtenecker, Bruggeman, Jaysundere‐Smith, and Maxwell‐Garnett rule‐of‐mixture equations indicated that the dielectric model based on the Bruggeman rule‐of‐mixture equation provided the dielectric constants closest to the measured values with a maximum deviation of less than −0.321% for EP/GF‐40 composites. This study provides a feasible strategy to control the mechanical and dielectric properties of GFRP composites. Glass fiber (GF) was modified by KH-550 to improve the compatibility between GF and epoxy resin (EP) matrix, and glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin composites (EP/GF) were prepared. The effects of GF content on the insulation and mechanical properties of EP/GF composites were studied. The results show that GF can be uniformly dispersed in EP when the content of GF does not exceed 30%. When the content of GF reaches 40%, GF agglomerates, and the EP matrix produces defects such as pores. When the content of GF is 30%, the insulation performance and comprehensive mechanical properties of EP/GF composites were the best. Compared with pure EP, the volume resistivity of the composites is increased by 36.9%, the relative dielectric constant ( εr) and dielectric loss factor (tan δ) are decreased by 11.4% and 8.9%, respectively. The short-term AC breakdown voltage value is increased by 27.8%, the bending strength is increased by 38.2%, the impact strength is increased by 40.0%, the tensile strength is increased by 40.4%, the elongation at break is decreased by 11.1%, and the hardness is increased by 5.9%. For commercial civil applications of laminated composite material, characterizations to forecast the interlaminar shear behavior and viscoelastic response across a wide temperature range are essential. In this study, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of glass/epoxy (GE) composites dispersed with binary nanofillers nanosilica‐multilayer graphene (NS‐MLG) and nanosilica‐nanoclay (NS‐NC) was analyzed at an in‐situ testing temperature of 20, 70, and 110°C. Further, the viscoelastic property of the composites was studied using a dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA) in the temperature range of 35–165°C. An increase in the ILSS value of around 9% and 10% was observed at room temperature for GE/MLG‐NS and GE/NC‐NS, respectively, compared to control GE composites. In contrast, the trend was seen to change at higher temperatures. There was a slight decrement in the storage modulus (E′) of GE/MLG‐NS and GE/NC‐NS composites in the glassy region compared to control GE composites. The mean Tg of the GE composite (control) was nearly 107.3°C when the E′ decline onset temperature was taken into account, but after the addition of MLG‐NS, it was 10.1°C below. The mean Tg of GE/NC‐NS was determined to be 106.3°C, and in the glass transition as well as rubbery regions, it was observed to compete with the E′ value of the control GE composites. Fractography was done using micrographs obtained from environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). In the current study, the nano-composites of unidirectional carbon and glass fiber reinforcedepoxy resin with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were separately prepared by hand lay-up and hot pressing of fiber epoxy prepregs. Three types of MWCNT derivatives (parentCNT, low carboxylated CNT (LCCNT) and higher carboxylated CNT (HCCNT)) were dispersed into the epoxy resin/fiber composites. The improved mechanical properties observed in the three component composites could be attributed to the uniform dispersion of CNTs in epoxy/ fiber matrices, nanosize of the additives and the improved interfacial interactions between the composite components. The COOH functional groups could also be effective in the increase of mechanical traits because they induce the amphiphilic nature into CNTs for better dispersion and to generate the better glass fiber/epoxy (E/G) and carbon fiber/epoxy (E/C) interactions. HCCNT led to the best mechanical properties among all the samples due to its higher carboxyl content. HCCNT also changed the curing peak of epoxy in DSC and improved its thermal stability. For instance, the final residual mass for E/HCCNT was 15.4% at 600 °C compared to 13.92% for the pure epoxy while the values of 17.55 and 16.48% were observed at 500 °C for E/HCCNT and epoxy, respectively. The observed effect of COOH functionality on the void formation within the composite and on the better CNT dispersion in the matrix can be considered as an important observation for investigating the E/C/CNTs nanocomposites. The development of innovative engineered epoxy composites aiming to manufacture cost‐efficient materials with reduced weight and enhanced physical properties remains as a current industrial challenge. In this work we report an original procedure for manufacturing glass‐fiber epoxy reinforced nanocomposites (GFECs) by employing electrospun fiber‐mats as a reinforcing phase. These fibers have been produced from polyacrylonitrile and multiwalled carbon nanotubes solutions. Optimal protocols are designed by combining Taguchi method with the morphological, structural and mechanical properties obtained by scanning electron microscopy, profilometry and tensile tests. It is demonstrated that GFECs fabricated using GF800 glass fiber show an improvement/enhancement of the mechanical properties with a fracture strain up to 500 MPa (around 20% higher than the non‐reinforced epoxy composite counterpart). It is also shown that GFECs fabricated using GF3M glass fiber exhibited a reduction of the roughness up to 56%, which corresponds with a roughness improvement from N8 to N7 following the guidelines provided by the ISO 1302. To further improve the preparation efficiency and properties of bamboo fiber reinforced polymer composites (BFRPs) fabricated by the vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process. Here, the bamboo fiber/glass fiber mesh reinforced polymer hybrid composites (BGRPs) were fabricated by VARTM to determine the effects of three fiber stacking sequences (namely, GBBGBBG, BGBGBGB, and BBGGGBB; B: bamboo fiber, G: glass fiber mesh) on the physical and mechanical properties, as well as void characteristics of BGRPs (i.e. BGRP-1, BGRP-2, and BGRP-3). The results showed that the incorporation of glass fiber meshes could shorten the injection time of epoxy resin and improve the mechanical properties of BFRPs. BGRP-1 exhibited the lowest water absorption (1.31%) and the highest shear strength (15.55 MPa). Glass fiber meshes on the surface and bottom of BGRP-1, respectively, served as buffer layers to retard mechanical damage, so that BGRP-1 had the best drop hammer impact properties. BGRP-2 represented the highest flexural strength and flexural modulus of 92.22 MPa and 6.69 GPa, respectively. The mechanical properties of BGRP-3 were inferior to those of BGRP-1 and BGRP- 2, and more voids were observed in the middle of BGRP-3 in micro-CT slices induced by inadequate epoxy resin impregnation on bamboo fibers. Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites possess excellent specific strength, specific stiffness and controlled anisotropy for which these are extensively used in various engineering applications, like automobile industries, aerospace industries, marine industries, space industries, electronics industries and many more. In order to use the glass fiber reinforced polyphenylene sulfide composites (GF/PPS) in high temperature environments, thermal aging performance of two kinds of commercial grade PPS composites, reinforced by 40% glass fiber, PPS‐G40 HM and 1140L4, in thermal aging temperature of 250°C was compared by tensile strength, oxidized layer, color, crystallization and melting behavior. The results showed that tensile strength of GF/PPS composites is significantly decreased with increasing of aging time below 200 h and the tensile strength of aged PPS‐G40 HM is higher than that of aged 1140L4. The thickness of dark color area is increased with increasing of aging time. The thickness of oxidized layer of 1140L4 is thinner than that of PPS‐G40 HM. However, the color of oxidized layer of PPS‐G40 HM is lighter than that of 1140L4. The recrystallization in thermal aging results in the formation of crystal with higher melting point and increased melting temperature of GF/PPS composites. It is found that addition of epoxy resin can increase the initial mechanical property and improve the thermal aging performance of GF/PPS composites. The article discusses the fabrication, mechanical characterization, and heat resistance of nano ZnO‐TiO2‐filled glass fiber‐reinforced LY556 epoxy composites, with focus on the synergistic effect of ZnO and TiO2 nanofillers. The fabrication of the composite laminates is achieved by the addition of the nanofillers in different wt% ranging from 1 to 5 wt%. The composites are prepared using simple hand layup technique followed by curing under vacuum. The 3D atomic force microscopy scans indicated even distribution of the nanofillers up to 2 wt% loading. Severe agglomeration of the nanofillers is evident for 3 to 5 wt% loading. The surface roughness, microhardness, flexural strength, tensile strength, and impact strength of the composites indicate a relationship with dispersion, wt% loading, and the wettability of the nanofiller with the LY556. In general, it is found that the incorporation of hard nanofillers favored the improvement of impact strength to a greater extent compared to tensile and flexural strengths. Detailed analysis of the obtained mechanical property values favors an optimum 2 wt% incorporation of the selected nanofillers to obtain improvement in various strength values of the fabricated composites. Abstract Owing to the outstanding properties of nano-Al 2 O 3 particles have incited material researchers to have a promising invasion in the field of fibrous polymeric composites. There is an uncertainty of nano-Al 2 O 3 /polymer interfacial stability at high temperature engineering applications. Current investigations explicate the effects of nano-Al 2 O 3 content on the mechanical behavior of glass/epoxy (GE) composites at various in-situ elevated temperatures. The flexural properties and viscoelastic behavior of the composites have been investigated and evaluated. The Weibull design parameters were analysed as a function of nano-Al 2 O 3 content and different test temperatures. Scanning electron microscopy analyses were carried out to understand various interfacial strengthening mechanism and micro-mechanism failures. These results indicated that incorporation of 0.1 wt% of nano-Al 2 O 3 in GE composites at room temperature could be considered an optimal value in flexural strength enhancement. The fracture surfaces demonstrated a combination of fiber pullout, interfacial debonding, matrix drainage and fiber imprints failure morphologies. Abstract Flax composites demonstrate superior damping properties to conventional fibres. These materials are already being utilised in some products but the mechanical properties they exhibit are too low for many structural applications. Hybridization of flax with higher strength fibres has been shown to yield materials, which balance damping and load carrying capabilities alongside improved environmental credentials for flax/carbon hybrids. However, the most used composite material is E-glass but the current literature does not facilitate the prediction of damping properties for these hybrid composites, where it is expected that they will behave differently due to the difference in material properties. The woven flax and E-glass fibres specimens embedded with epoxy resin are manufactured via resin infusion to understand the damping and mechanical properties possible from an industrial process and the dominant factors affecting them, rather than the relationships between individual variables and these properties. These experiments allow the hybrids to be profiled for the first time and it is observed that hybridization of flax and E-glass fibres results in an increase in damping, from 1.97% to 2.63% for the best hybrid, especially when the flax plies are placed on the outer skin, however the compromise in tensile properties is significant, from 473.28 MPa to 166.53 MPa. Recently, researchers have been attempting to enhance the mechanical and tribological characteristics of thermosetting epoxy composites by incorporating inorganic nanoparticles and ensuring their uniform distribution throughout the matrix. This study characterises ball-milled ilmenite (FeTiO 3 -size of 63 nm) and silicon dioxide (SiO 2 -size of 67.5 nm) fillers added to epoxy in proportions of 0:0, 2.5:2.5, 5:5, and 7.5:7.5% by weight. A liquid ultrasonic technique is used to blend the fillers with the epoxy, and compression moulding is used to fabricate the composite. Mechanical tests were performed based on ASTM standards. Tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus and elongations at break(tensile and flexural test) of 5:5 wt % are 30.54%, 12.2%, 32.22%, 28.98%,23.78% and 23.53% higher than neat sample respectively. Shore "D" hardness and Izod's impact strength are 4.65% and 98.93% higher at 5:5 wt % than neat sample respectively. Specific wear rate decreased from 2.6 × 10−11 m3/Nm (neat GFRP: 0 wt % glass fibre reinforced polymer composite) to 0.7 × 10−11 m3/Nm at 5:5 wt % filler. Nanoparticles lowered the coefficient of friction by around 16.66%, 60.42%, and 33.33% at sliding distances of 100 m for 2.5:2.5, 5:5, and 7.5:7.5 wt % respectively with the neat sample. A 5:5 wt percent resulted in 76.68% less wear volume loss than pure GFRP. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) analysis revealed element distributions, particle size, pullout of fibers, damaged interfaces, filler dispersion, voids, wear debris, interfacial debonding, and cavities. While conventional fiber-reinforced polymer composites offer high strength and stiffness, they lack ductility and the ability to absorb energy before failure. This work investigates hybrid fiber composites for structural applications comprised of polymer, steel fiber, and glass fibers to address this shortcoming. Varying volume fractions of thin, ductile steel fibers were introduced into glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites. Non-hybrid and hybrid composite specimens were prepared and subjected to monolithic and half-cyclic tensile testing to obtain stress-strain relationships, hysteresis behavior, and insight into failure mechanisms. Open-hole testing was used to assess the vulnerability of the composites to stress concentration. Incorporating steel fibers into glass/epoxy composites offered a significant improvement in energy absorption prior to failure and material re-centering capabilities. It was found that a lower percentage of steel fibers (8.2%) in the hybrid composite outperformed those with higher percentages (15.7% and 22.8%) in terms of energy absorption and re-centering, as the glass reinforcement distributed the plasticity over a larger area. The objective of the present investigation is to study the alteration in flexural performance of glass/epoxy (GE) composite with and without multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) after liquid nitrogen conditioning. The epoxy resin was first modified by 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt% MWCNT, which was then used along with E-glass fibers to fabricate laminates. Flexural strength and modulus were evaluated by 3-point bend test. Out of these four compositions, the maximum strength in the as-fabricated condition was obtained for GE composite with 0.1 wt% CNT, which is 32.74% higher as compared to GE composite. Decrease in strength and modulus was observed for short time span of liquid nitrogen conditioning i.e. 0.25 h. Long cryogenic conditioning resulted in increment in strength. The objective of this work is to investigate the mechanical properties of Glass fiber reinforced Epoxy composites with different weight proportions. Using hand lay-up technique followed by compression moulding, five composites were prepared by varying the Glass fiber from 15 wt.% to 35 wt.%. The necessary mechanical tests were conducted as per ASTM standards and surface morphology of the fractured surfaces was examined by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). As per the obtained results, it is concluded that the 25 wt.% fiber loaded composite has superior mechanical properties. The results are mathematically evaluated by adopting Mixture Design optimization technique. In this study, the interfacial and mechanical properties of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) coated glass fiber/epoxy composites were investigated as a function of the CNC content on the surface of glass fibers (GF). Chopped GF rovings were coated with CNC by immersing the GF in CNC (0-5 wt%) aqueous suspensions. Single fiber fragmentation (SFF) tests showed that the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) increased by ~69% in composites produced with CNC coated GF as compared to uncoated GF, suggesting an enhancement of stress transfer across the GF/matrix interface. The role of CNC coatings on the tensile, flexural, and thermo-mechanical properties of the CNC-coated GF/epoxy composites was investigated. Incorporation of 0.17 wt% CNC in the composite resulted in increases of ~10% in both elastic modulus and tensile strength, and 40 and 43 % in flexural modulus and strength respectively. Electrospun glass nanofibers (EGNFs) are emerging fillers to improve mechanical properties of polymer matrix composite materials. However, questions concerning their reinforcing effectiveness in comparison with other nanoscale fillers such as glass/silica nanoparticles (GNPs) are still to be answered because reinforcing mechanisms for conventional fiber reinforced polymer composites might not be applicable at distinctive nanometer scale. Herein a comparative study on reinforcing effect of EGNFs and their conventional counterpart GNPs was carried out for the first time. Four types of glass nanofillers, including pristine EGNFs and GNPs as well as amino surface-functionalized EGNFs and GNPs were investigated to make epoxy matrix nanocomposites at ultra-low loading level (≤0.5 wt%). Mechanical properties of these glass nanofiller reinforced epoxy composites were investigated and corresponding reinforcing and toughening mechanisms at nanometer scale were discussed. Due to shape factor (aspect ratio), EGNFs demonstrated much more pronounced reinforcing and toughening effectiveness and completely outperformed GNPs in all cases despite much lower specific surface area. This research provided meaningful data to fully understand the merit of EGNFs as reinforcing filler in polymer nanocomposites and paved the road for designing and modeling next-generation polymer matrix composite materials. ABSTRACT In this study, the gallic acid-based epoxy resin (GA-ER) and alkali-catalysed biphenyl-4,4′-diol formaldehyde resin (BPFR) are synthesized. Glass fibre-reinforced GA-ER/BPFR composites are prepared. Graphene oxide (GO) is used to improve the mechanical and thermal properties of GA-ER/BPFR composites. Dynamic mechanical properties and thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of the composites with different GO content are characterized. The results demonstrate that GO can enhance the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites. The glass transition temperature, Tg, of the BPFR/GA-ER/GO composites is 20.7°C higher than the pure resin system, and the 5% weight loss temperature, Td5, is enhanced approximately 56.6°C. When the BPFR: GA-ER mass ratio is at 4 : 6 and GO content is 1.0-1.2 wt %, the tensile and impact strengths of composites are 60.97 MPa and 32.08 kJ/m2 higher than the pure resin composites, respectively. This work describes the study to investigate and compare the mechanical and thermal properties of raw jute and glass fiber reinforced epoxy hybrid composites. To improve the mechanical properties, jute fiber was hybridized with glass fiber. Epoxy resin, jute and glass fibers were laminated in three weight ratios (69/31/0, 68/25/7 and 64/18/19) respectively to form composites. The tensile, flexural, impact, density, thermal and water absorption tests were carried out using hybrid composite samples. This study shows that the addition of jute fiber and glass fiber in epoxy, increases the density, the impact energy, the tensile strength and the flexural strength, but decreases the loss mass in function of temperature and the water absorption. Morphological analysis was carried out to observe fracture behavior and fiber pull-out of the samples using scanning electron microscope. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
