Maritime trade, immigration and industrialization have resulted in the production of rich cultural narratives that port cities have long embodied as centers of industrial activities. Unfortunately, a large number of these locations, many of which date back to important social and economic turning points in the histories of various parts of the world remain neglected leading to dilapidation. In fact, this is particularly the situation in India. In this context, this research examines the industrial heritage Kuttichira, where the earliest recorded trade settlement in Calicut city in Kerala, India still remains albeit in a poor state. This research employs multiple research techniques to gather data. It first examines secondary literature. It then examines a case study within which a site visit and direct observations were conducted to observe the present condition of the heritage. An interview with an expert and interactions with a few local residents have also been carried out in order to understand the industrial heritage. Maps and drawings were created using the data gathered. The paper identifies the potentials of this industrial heritage to provide a sense of history and identity to the place. It concludes that heritage should be utilized for restoring the intangible heritage of the area, thus connecting the area with the current growth of the city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Special economic zones (SEZs) can be described as "carved out jurisdictions within the overall jurisdiction of a state in order to introduce different laws and regulations that are usually more trade and investment friendly". South Africa's SEZs are created under the Special Economic Zones Act 16 of 2014. This article analyses the country's legal framework for SEZs, which legal scholars have thus far only examined from a purely economic perspective. It provides a brief historical overview of industrial development zones, examines the 2014 act and suggests some reforms within the SEZ legislative framework. A comparative analysis is provided by drawing some lessons from BRICS member countries that have a successful record in operationalizing SEZs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Doctor of Geography, Professor Irina Alexandrovna Rodionova - recognized specialist in the field of industrial geography. For more than a quarter of a century she gave to work at the Lomonosov Moscow State University and about the same number - work at the Peoples Friendship University of Russia. Her life is full of events and meetings with interesting people. There were also difficulties. It was especially hard for scientific and pedagogical workers in the 1990s, when their work was poorly funded. Specialists did not remain in science, but Irina Alexandrova did not leave it. In the 1990-2000s, many students knew I.A. Rodionova from textbooks. Using them, they entered universities in geographical and economic specialties. 2021 was also a difficult year, when distance learning was introduced. Conferences were also held remotely. Irina Alexandrovna coped with these problems, successfully working both in the teaching and in the scientific field. She generously shares her knowledge and experience with colleagues and students and is the developer of a number of disciplines taught at universities. Under her leadership, 10 dissertations were successfully defended. I.A. Rodionova is the author of more than 400 publications, many of which she published in co-authorship with colleagues and students. She took part and created many textbooks for universities on the geography of industry, economic geography, and is one of the authors of the atlas for the school textbook on geography of grades 10-11. This article - a small fraction of gratitude from colleagues and students in honor of the anniversary of I.A. Rodionova.

Globalizationexerts pressure on the government to become more publicly accountable, competitive and responsive to citizens. The UN defines globalization as increased and intensified flows between countries. These flows are of goods, services, capital, ideas, information and people, which produces national cross-border integration of a number of economic, social and culture activities. The primary objective of liberalization is to free the country from the restrictions on production, expansion and following of rigid rules and regulations. This paper attempts to examine the impact of globalization and liberalization on Indian administration and provide a framework for administration to circumvent the overbearing effect of globalization in their efforts toward industrialization, economic growth and development. The attempt has been made in this paper to analyze the impact of globalization and liberalization on different aspects of Indian administration and changes introduced at different levels in Indian administration due to globalization and liberalization. The study is based on primary as well as secondary data and it is of descriptive type. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DEPENDENCY theory (International relations) , *CAPITALISM , *INDUSTRIALIZATION , *ECONOMIC development , *ECONOMICS , *RESEARCH - Abstract
This article evaluates the relevance of dependency theory for understanding contemporary development challenges, especially in the light of changes in the global economy over the past 50 years. In order to do so, the article rectifies previous misunderstandings of the scholarship and offers a new definition of dependency theory as a research programme, rather than a singular theory. Four core tenets of this research programme are identified: a global historical approach; theorizing of the polarizing tendencies of global capitalism; a focus on structures of production; and a focus on the specific constraints faced by peripheral economies. While each of these elements can be found in many contemporary theories, what makes dependency theory unique — and a particularly strong research programme — is the combination of these elements. The article demonstrates how this approach provides a deep and broad understanding that is necessary to appreciate the persistence of uneven development with reference to two case studies, namely successful industrialization in South Korea, and how the fragmentation of global value chains has impacted industrialization in Indonesia. Finally, the article argues that approaching these kinds of cases through a dependency research programme can contribute to a fruitful renewal of development studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article provides a genealogy of Hannah Arendt's treatment of political economy in the years prior to the publication of The Human Condition (1958). In the early 1950s her archival papers and diary entries display deep concern for a host of topics at the intersection of political and economic thought: labor, work, slavery, consumption, industrialization, and automation. Such interests, which were passed through the philosophical canon from Aristotle to Marx, would serve as the theoretical basis for many of the distinctions that define The Human Condition. When set within the context of midcentury debates around political economy, it becomes clear that Arendt conceived the distinctions not only to respond to the aporias of Western philosophy but also to contest contemporaries who put stock in dialectical materialist accounts of political emancipation. Understanding Arendt's adversaries more clearly provides the chance to see her conceptual distinctions as interventions into concurrent attempts to reviseMarxian political economy in the latter half of the twentieth century. MONETARY policy ,ECONOMICS ,ECONOMIC expansion ,LABOR productivity ,COST of living - Abstract
Purpose: This paper aims to explore Istisna'a as a tool of monetary policy (MP) and examines its effectiveness in achieving full employment income and price stability. Design/methodology/approach: This paper uses Istisna'a as a tool of MP and examines its effects on key macroeconomic variables on purely theoretical ground. The effectiveness and the impact of Istisna'a-based MP is examined by using aggregate output and aggregate expenditure model, embedded with Islamic economic principles, including zakat function. Findings: Istisna'a-based MP immediately creates well paid jobs, positively contributes and expands the size of the manufacturing sector, increases capital per person employed, labor productivity and thus increases output, employment and promotes industrialization. Increase in the size of manufacturing sector will not only increase manufactured value-added exports but also cut high valued manufactured imports and thus increases positive trade balance and eventually reduces trade deficits. Increase in labor productivity will improve the standard of living, and eventually the economy will yield sustainable high growth rates, full employment and prosperity. Originality/value: This is probably one of the first attempt to systematically develop the Istisna'a-based MP with detailed MP transmission mechanism. This new contribution in the field of Islamic MP will unveil the horizon of sustainable economic growth, creation of well paid jobs, expansion of manufacturing sector, rapid industrialization and the increase in capital per person employed across the economy, and eventually Istisna'a-based MP will be one of the most effective tool of MP for transforming an economy into a relatively higher and sophisticated stages which will eventually promote sustainable development. ECONOMICS , *ECONOMIC demand , *ECONOMIC development , *INDUSTRIALIZATION , *PATRONAGE ,DEVELOPED countries - Abstract
The first criticisms about the idea of liberal economics were seen in the newspapers of the period in 1870 and it was stated that the country should be industrialized. In the 1880s, the country's industrialization and increasing the customs rates to protect its industry were strongly expressed in the press. Ahmet Mithat Efendi, who systematically expressed the idea of patronage in the country for the first time. Ahmet Mithat stated that the industrialization of the country would not take place with the application of liberal economic thought and that this idea would only be applied to developed countries. For this reason, he advocated the protection of the Ottoman industry. In 1880, Ahmet Mithat initiated the dönem Interpretation of Truth politik and the periodical periodicals of industrialization policies were supported. These newspapers emphasized the importance of industrialization for the country's economic development and demanded that the state implement protective measures for the development of industry. SUSTAINABLE development ,INDUSTRIALIZATION ,ECONOMICS ,ECONOMIC development - Abstract
The paper deals with an immensely important and topical issue related to the implementation of sustainable development policies at the regional level. It focuses on assessing the level of sustainability in building stable infrastructure, promoting sustainable industrialization, and fostering innovation between 2015 and 2021 at the regional level in Poland. The areas included in the assessment relate to Goal 9 of the UN Agenda 2030 adopted by member states. The basis for the assessment was a developed research methodology based on a selected set of 19 indicators characterizing the development of innovation, industrialization and infrastructure at the regional level. The research covered 16 regions (provinces) in Poland from 2015 to 2021. In addition to determining the dynamics of change of individual indicators, characterizing the rate of change of the sustainable economy in these 16 regions, their ranking was created, reflecting the status of implementation of Goal 9 of the Agenda. The ranking was made using the developed new approach to analyzing a multi-criteria problem based on the MCDM methodology. The CODAS and CoCoSo methods and the Laplace criterion were used to determine the final value of the index for assessing the level of sustainable development of regions. Meanwhile, the values of the indicator weights were determined based on the Shannon Entropy and CRITIC methods and the aforementioned criterion. The determined index values formed the basis for making a ranking of the studied regions and assessing their level of development. The result of this process was their division into four classes differing in the level of achievement of Goal 9 of the Agenda. With the use of non-parametric tests (Kendall's Rank and Spearman Rank), an evaluation was carried out of the relationship between the values of the determined index and selected economic and social parameters characterizing the studied regions between 2015 and 2021. The results show that Poland is highly differentiated both temporally and spatially at the regional level. Throughout the entire analyzed period, the high level of development in the assessed scope was reported for the Masovia, Lower Silesia and Pomerania provinces, and the low level – for the Holy Cross Province. The results also confirm the relationship between a high degree of innovation, industrialization and stable infrastructure and economic development and living standards. The results show regions that need a decision on their nature and the role they are to play in the national and European economy. • Regional Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 9 in Poland was assessed; • A new integrated approach was used for the assessment; • In Poland occur the great diversity of the regions in terms of SDG9; • SDG9 index has a strong relationship with economic and social parameters. India is facing an acute energy scarcity which is hampering its industrial growth and economic progress. Setting up of new power plants is inevitably dependent on import of highly volatile fossil fuels. Thus, it is essential to tackle the energy crisis through judicious utilization of abundant the renewable energy resources, such as biomass energy, solar energy, wind energy and geothermal energy. India became the world's third largest producer of electricity in the year 2013 and accounts for 4.8% of global share in electricity generation. But its per capita electricity consumption is only 746 kWh, which is lower compared to many countries, though electricity tariff is cheaper in India. Energy is the basic input in all sectors of the nation’s economy, and the standard of living is directly related to per capita energy consumption. As the country is heavily populated, provision of adequate quantities and kinds of energy is a challenge to the government, and the institutions in the country engaged in tasks relating to energy supply and transport. Apart from augmenting the energy supply, renewable resources will help India in mitigating climate change. India is heavily dependent on fossil fuels for its energy needs. There is an urgent need for renewable energy has the potential to create many employment opportunities at all levels, especially in rural areas. An emphasis on presenting the real picture of massive renewable energy potential, it would be possible to attract foreign investments to herald a Green Energy Revolution in India. Environmental change and unexpected crises are major threats to industrial development. Industries must build technological resilience to reduce the impact of shocks. Resilience has become a crucial concept for addressing vulnerabilities and developing flexible methods of adapting to crises. This study examined the concept of technological resilience, particularly at the industry level, as well as the factors that may influence technological resilience. Moreover, the relative capability of industries to maintain their production of technological knowledge during disruptive events was examined by analyzing the growth and crises of patenting. This methodology yielded novel insights into technological resilience with multidimensional perspectives. Collaboration reinforces technological resilience by reducing crisis probability and intensity. In addition, high-quality and diversified technological knowledge enhances technological resilience by reducing the probability, intensity, or duration of crises. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carbon sequestration through capture and storage in subsurface porous geologic formations is one potential method for mitigating the problem of climate change due to emission of anthropogenic CO2. In fact, in a world highly dependent on energy derived from hydrocarbons and coal, carbon capture and storage may represent the most promising approach to maintaining industrial development in the present period, while implementing other solutions that will deliver sustainable reductions in CO2 emissions in the long run. Some countries have initiated pilot and large-scale projects to develop and improve carbon capture and storage technology, while others are slow to follow. What explains this variation? We develop a theory of the political economy of technology adoption to explore conditions under which countries are more likely to implement carbon capture and storage projects. We find that the likelihood of such projects depends on governments' policy positions and industries' research and development capacity. Data analysis of carbon capture and storage projects provides evidence in support of our theoretical expectations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a survey spanning over half a century of his own work, Hirschman, among the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century on political economy, celebrates the ability to undermine one's own claims and theories. Whereas skepticism toward other people's work is not noteworthy, Hirschman argues, selfcritque is crucial in relation "to one's own generalizations or constructs." But self-criticism and interpretive changes do "not in the end cancel out or refute the earlier findings"; rather, they help to define domains of the social world where originally postulated relations do not hold. Exercises in "self-subversion," while often experienced at first as traumatic, are eventually, as Hirschman's own career attests, "rewarding and enriching." [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In view of the extensive growth of China's steel production in recent years, this paper analyzed the industrial development background and economic geography theory, and discussed the possible spatial interaction mechanism. Based on panel data of China's inter-provincial steel output from 2001 to 2015, using spatial econometric model, this paper also explored whether China's provincial steel production shows material orientation, market orientation and traffic orientation, and isolated spatial interactions of interprovincial steel output The results showed that the inter-provincial steel production in China did show both material orientation, market orientation and traffic orientation and that there was a significant negative spatial interaction, indicating that there might be strong competition and a crowing-out effect between neighboring provinces, and that the smaller the spatial scope, the more significant the spatial interactions of steel production. Make or buy? The question as to whether households should produce or purchase goods has been debated ever since industrialization diminished the significance of subsistence economies. The article interprets different modes of provision as moral economies that shaped markets and societies. The use of resources such as time, money, and materials reflected both moral and economic considerations, all of which were related to ideas about how skills, knowledge, and competences should be divided between genders, generations, and classes. During the past few decades, developing countries have been pushed by international economic institutions and developed countries to effectively abandon promotion of industrialization and structural transformation as a key developmental agenda. In addition, the 'development' debate of recent decades has tended to focus solely on internal factors as if external economic forces are always benign. Within this context, this paper analyzes the key ideas of Gebrehiwot Baykedagn (GHB) (1886–1919), traces their lineages and considers their feasibility and relevance for current developing economies. In a nutshell, for GHB, the main keys to economic development are the creation, accumulation and use of knowledge and skill, technology, innovation and technical change and the means of economic development are deliberate, dynamic and comprehensive sets of state-directed, synergistic interventions that aim at moving an economy away from 'nature-intensive' economic activities towards knowledge-, skill-, technology- and innovation-based ones. Based on analysis of historical and theoretical evidence, this paper argues that the main ideas of GHB and his colleagues are still valid, feasible and relevant for today's developing economies as long as they are innovatively tailored to the unique context of each country and to the broader international policy context. Improved access to energy in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has the potential to alleviate poverty, promote industrialisation, facilitate gender equality and reduce the region's vulnerability to climate change. Consequently, the current low rates of electrification in many SSA countries has been identified as the most pressing obstacle to economic growth, more important than access to finance, red tape or corruption. Despite the presence of numerous initiatives for promoting energy access in Africa, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) calling for universal access to energy by 2030, Africa might still not be able to achieve universal energy access by 2030. Through an analysis of case studies, research articles, policy briefs and project reports this paper sought to investigate the policies, strategies and innovations that could help expedite SSA's progress towards universal energy access before 2030. This investigation revealed that an emphasis on rural electrification and linking energy access to agriculture and irrigation development as the case was in Viet Nam, could successfully diversify African economies and mitigate the negative perceptions about Africa's growth prospects and energy sectors that global economic shocks instigate. Additionally, the operations of Power Africa, the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) Initiative and the China South-South Climate Cooperation Fund can either significantly improve the financing and regulatory frameworks for SSA's energy sectors or constrain economic development in SSA by promoting rent-seeking and corruption which culminates into a ‘climate finance curse’. Consequently, these initiatives can only facilitate inclusive growth as envisioned in the SDGs if SSA develops or strengthens institutions to coordinate and harmonise investments and aid from such autonomous diverse sources. The 'soft power' can be brought forward and achieved for any developing country through softer means. Advertising (both direct and indirect approach) is a powerful tool for disseminating information to various stakeholders concerning the MSME sector. To introspect the potentiality of India's MSME's emerging power, the researchers attempted to answer the different components that shaped Indian industrialization over the years and also analyzed the direct and indirect audio-visual advertisements created on MSMEs to encourage entrepreneurial activities throughout the nation. The observation indicates that direct and indirect advertisements that promote and encourage the growth of entrepreneurship have their advantages and disadvantages; however, direct advertisements are proven to be preferred over indirect advertisements, while the reason behind it can be the dilution of concept or the prominence of commercialization.

Researchers from North-West University have conducted a study on the role of industrialization in employment and economic growth in South Africa. The study found that industrialization has a significant impact on economic growth and employment opportunities in the country. Industries such as automotive, food and beverage, chemical, and metal positively affect economic growth, while high production in food and beverage, chemical, automotive, and metal industries fuels employment growth. However, high production in clothing and chemical industries has adverse effects on economic and employment growth. The researchers recommend that policymakers consider pro-industrialization strategies, particularly in industries with high demand, to enhance trade, economic growth, and job creation. • Overview of the theory and practice of national state-directed development. • Following the demise of state-directed development, the political economy of development has split into three disparate research agendas. • Historical-structural analysis can provide an integrated framework for studying national development. • Historical-structural analysis must be updated to include the decreased coherence of collective actors after neoliberal reform. • Historical-structural analysis must also be updated to include the increased institutionalization of the world economy. From the mid-1940s, strategies and policies of state-directed development empowered the state to transform a set of relationships among labor and domestic and international capital to reorder priorities of production and investment within national boundaries. Associated theories of national development, including dependency theory, made critical interventions in how we understood states, markets and the international economy in the context of late development. From the early 1980s, however, domestic reformers and international institutions dismantled state-directed development in response to profound shocks to the international economy of the previous decade, through processes of neoliberal reform in most developing countries. With the demise of state-directed development, convergent understandings of the political economy of national development were repudiated; there is no consensus on the meaning of national development today. Rather, three research agendas have arisen, 1) focusing on the provision of public and social goods to individuals and communities, 2) analyzing firm-level "upgrading" relationships both within and across borders, and 3) exploring the capacities of states to execute industrial policy or enhance their domestic governance. These three agendas highlight vital aspects of the dilemmas of development, but they do not provide an integrated perspective of the political economy of national development. This article proposes revisiting and updating Cardoso and Faletto's "historical-structural analysis," which can incorporate the interactions among domestic governments, firms and other economic actors, international agencies, multinationals and global structures and institutions. It updates this approach by exploring the ways in which neoliberal reform has disarticulated capital, labor and the state apparatus domestically, while incorporating institutional change to the structures of international trade and investment. Revised historical-structural analysis can thus represent a crucial framework for understanding the possibilities of particular national growth models, and the barriers to these trajectories from domestic and international sources. This study examines the impact of Turkiye's economic policy choices on industrialization since the Global Crisis. For the study period, TurkStat and World Bank data on the main industrial sector indicators such as production, value added, exports and imports, and technology intensity were used. The study concludes that such choices were shaped in parallel with the global economy until 2019. In terms of the second observation, the relationship between economic policy preferences and industrialization, industrialization increases during periods of protectionist economic policies, and although the industrial sector loses its top priority during periods of liberal economic policies, increased integration with the world economy and private sector entrepreneurship add momentum to industrialization. The third observation is that the structural problems of the Turkish economy lead to economic instability and adversely affect industrialization, regardless of the choice of economic policy. The fourth observation is that after the Global Crisis of 2008, global competition has been increasingly based on technology, an area where Turkiye lags behind. Aiming for short-term economic growth through wrong macroeconomic policy choices, the country moves away from ensuring long-term economic growth and economic development through industrialization based on technological development, and the whole economy faces increasing risks.

Industrialization and urbanization are critical paths to modernization for a country or region. The coordination of industrialization and urbanization fosters the development of a regional economy. In academic circles, this is usually measured by the IU ratio (ratio of labor industrialization rate to urbanization rate) and the NU ratio (ratio of non-agricultural employment rate to urbanization rate). However, these methods are inapplicable to large countries’ inland areas. The traditional methods failed to explain the real situation and produced contradictory results. The IU ratio shows that industrialization lags behind urbanization, while the NU ratio shows that industrialization is ahead of urbanization. According to studies conducted in the Sichuan Province of China, through comparison with Jiangsu Province, it is found that the non-agricultural employment growth is not dependent on the development of local industrialization, and rural-urban migration is not entirely dependent on the evolution of the non-agricultural employment rate. Other factors that promote urbanization, such as the country’s capital policies and funds for migrant labor force transfer, should also be considered. This research attempts to improve the traditional methods for measuring the degree of urbanization and industrialization synergy in inland areas. The new empirical approach can effectively identify the critical characteristics of urbanization in inland provinces, such as the development of non-agricultural employment with external assistance and urban migrants “unrelated to employment opportunities”. Based on these key characteristics, it can provide the basis for local urbanization policy formulation.

Reindustrialisation and the European Industrial Renaissance are strategic priorities of the current EU programming period (2014-2020). In parallel with the declining significance of national economies, the meso (local) level is becoming more and more powerful. Key actors of reindustrialisation are transnational companies (TNCs) and their locations, the specific settlements. Transnational companies are influential allies of local and regional communities from several aspects, such as society, economy, governance, environment, and most importantly from the perspective of the current study, science and education. Their contribution to secondary and higher level engineering education, starting from the international kindergarten level, continuing in dual education models and ending up in corporate PhD and MBA programs have become significant elements of the endogenous development potential of the host locations. The author considers the active participation of TNCs in these educational activities and life career model development as part of their local embedding process. Corporate embeddedness is a relatively new field of research and a phenomenon that raises several questions generating an ongoing debate between both practitioners and researchers. The current research focuses on the embeddedness of TNCs in the science and education sphere in the Central and Eastern European region, by analysing several case studies and process models from Hungary. The methodology is novel, process-based and empirical, building on the quintuple helix innovation model and the findings of recent desk-based and primary research. The contribution to the state of the art is twofold, firstly, the presentation of contemporary corporate embeddedness process models from the perspective of engineering education; and secondly, the analysis of how these processes could contribute to advanced economic growth and development path designation of an area.
