Petrography, fluid-inclusion microthermometry, stable isotope analyses, and radiometric (206Pb/238U) dating of Upper Triassic dolostones, saddle dolomite, and quartz and calcite cements were used to constrain the timing and conditions of dolomitization and cementation in the context of the tectonic evolution of a basin in the northern United Arab Emirates. Dolomitization (ca. 152.4 Ma) and precipitation of saddle dolomite (ca. 146.8 Ma), calcite (ca. 144.6 Ma), and quartz cements are attributed to focused synrifting flow of hot basinal brines into grain-supported limestones in which permeability was enhanced by incursion of meteoric waters beneath a disconformity surface. Another calcite cement generation (ca. 99.7 Ma) was formed by flow of hot brines during tectonic compression related to the obduction of Oman ophiolites in the Late Cretaceous. Thus, this paper provides new insights into (1) stratigraphic controls on and timing of hydrothermal (hot basinal brines) dolomitization, (2) the origin of closely associated intraformational limestones and dolostones, and (3) linkages between diagenesis and thermochemical modifications of basinal brines during tectonic evolution of sedimentary basins. Diagenetic heterogeneities are difficult to predict in the subsurface. Nevertheless, such heterogeneities can be crucial in hydrocarbon exploration. Diagenetic processes can significantly alter petrophysical properties of reservoir rocks, especially in carbonate rocks because of the reactive nature of the carbonate minerals. Dolomitization [i.e., the transformation of calcite (limestone: Lmst) into dolomite] is a common diagenetic process in carbonate rocks. Resulting dolomite bodies have a different pore network than the original Lmst and respond also differently to tectonic stress causing different fracture networks than in the original Lmst. The paper presents an overview of the learning outcomes gained by studying fracture-related dolomite in outcrops of Oman and subsequent laboratory analysis conducted over the last 4 years. A combined structural, petrographic, and geochemical approach was taken to study three dolomite systems occurring in different stratigraphic host-rock (HR) intervals. Structurally controlled dolomitization (i.e., dolomitization along faults and fractures) typically occurs in burial conditions, and the resulting strong permeability anisotropies caused by the dolomite textures can cause major challenges for hydrocarbon exploration. Dolomite bodies in the Precambrian Khufai formation are related to N/S to NNE/SSW fractures, whereas dolomite bodies that mainly occur in the Jurassic HRs occur along reactivated WNW/ESE normal faults. These fracture-related dolomite bodies are generally less than 15 m wide, but can be up to a few hundred meters long. Late-diagenetic dolomite bodies were also recognized in Permian HRs, where they occur at or close to the contact between Permian Lmst and early-diagenetic dolomite. This late-diagenetic dolomite system can be traced laterally for at least hundreds of meters and occurs in wadis that are approximately 40 km apart. Our data indicate that there were several dolomitization events in the geological history of the succession, generating dolomite bodies with different characteristics. The clumped isotope paleo-thermometer has become a valuable proxy for the burial history reconstruction of carbonate formations. To maximise the accuracy of these reconstructions, post-depositional alterations, such as recrystallisation and Δ47 isotope exchange reactions, must be understood. In this study, we examine the isotopic behaviour of calcites and early dolomite samples from the same stratigraphic intervals, and thus with similar burial history. This approach provides additional constraints on the kinetics of Δ47 reordering in dolomite during exhumation. Clumped isotope measurements were performed on 19 calcites and 15 early dolomites from the Permian, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods from four locations in Oman spanning different burial regimes. The calcite and dolomite samples were collected from the rock matrix, based on the assumption that fine material was more susceptible to recrystallisation. Our results show that calcites and dolomites record different Δ47 values despite being subjected to the same thermal history. The maximum Δ47 temperature recorded in dolomites (181 ± 13 °C) corresponds to the oldest and most deeply buried Permian rock. This value is approximately 35 °C higher than those measured in the co-located and coeval calcite matrix (145 ± 14 °C). This discrepancy suggests that calcite and dolomite have different kinetic parameters. Our data confirm (1) that dolomite Δ47 values are more resistant to alteration during burial and exhumation than Δ47 calcite values, and (2) that dolomite has a higher Δ47 closing temperature than calcite during cooling. The presence of two mineral phases with distinct kinetic parameters in the same stratigraphic unit provides additional constraints on models of burial and uplift. In addition, mineralogical data coupled with Δ47 and burial depths suggest that the progressive development of dolomite cation ordering is driven by temperature elevation, as previously suggested. We quantified mineral proportions in listvenite (completely carbonated peridotite) in Hole BT1B drilled across the basal thrust of the Samail ophiolite by the International Continental Scientific Drilling Project Oman Drilling Project using 3D X‐ray Computed Tomography (XCT). We analyzed >250,000 XCT images from a continuous ∼200 m listvenite core. Histograms of the intensity of X‐ray attenuation of each XCT core‐slice image were fitted assuming that the listvenites are composed of magnesite, quartz, and dolomite. The XCT mineral peaks were confirmed by comparison with chemical mapping data obtained using an X‐ray fluorescence (XRF) core scanner. Listvenite matrix is composed almost entirely of magnesite and quartz, consistent with discrete XRD and XRF data. Veins are composed mostly of dolomite. The mean abundance of dolomite in listvenite from BT1B is 11 vol.%, whereas that in core sections within 15 m of the basal thrust is >50 vol.%, suggesting the basal thrust acted as a source of Ca‐ and CO2‐rich fluids. The SiO2:MgO:CaO molar ratio in the entire core from BT1B is 42:52:6, similar to that of onboard XRF data for discrete samples (41:54:5), whereas average Oman peridotites have ratios of (39:60:1), indicating Ca addition perhaps during carbonation. P‐ and S‐wave velocities and density of listvenite are close to those of peridotite and are higher than those of serpentinites. These results suggest that limited material transfer during carbonation and hydration of the Samail ophiolite, except for Ca, CO2, and H2O. Listvenites formed in the mantle wedge above subduction zones may be an overlooked reservoir for carbon in the Earth's interior. Plain Language Summary: To understand planetary‐scale fluid circulation from the surface to deep regions of Earth, it is important to constrain how fluids are captured/released by hydration/dehydration and carbonation/decarbonation of minerals and the associated volumes of these fluids. Listvenite, completely carbonated mantle material, occurs in the Samail ophiolite. Continuous ∼200 m drill core samples of listvenite overlying the basal thrust of the Samail ophiolite were obtained by the International Continental Scientific Drilling Project Oman Drilling Project. We evaluated the mineral fractions of listvenite from 3D X‐ray Computed Tomography (XCT) images of these core samples with confirmation using chemical mapping data from an X‐ray fluorescence core scanner. More than 125,000 XCT images were analyzed using this method. We found that dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2) abundance is highest within 15 m of the base of listvenite layer, which is the paleo‐plate boundary. These results suggest that the mantle carbonation involved CO2‐, H2O‐, and Ca‐rich fluids and that the paleo‐plate boundary acted as a pathway for these fluids. Because listvenite contains 36 mol% CO2 and has seismic properties different from serpentinites and similar to volatile‐free peridotites, listvenite in the mantle wedge overlying subduction zone may be an overlooked reservoir for carbon in the Earth's interior. A common problem in dolomite reservoirs is the heterogeneous distribution of porosity-reducing diagenetic phases. The intrasalt carbonates of the Ediacaran-Early Cambrian Ara Group in the South Oman Salt Basin represent a self-sourcing petroleum system. Depositional facies and carbonate/evaporite platform architecture are well understood, but original reservoir properties have been modified by diagenesis. Some of the carbonate reservoirs failed to produce hydrocarbons at acceptable rates, which triggered this study. The extent of primary porosity reduction by diagenetic phases was quantified using point counting. To visualize the distribution of diagenetic phases on a field scale, we constructed 2D interpolation diagenesis maps to identify patterns in cementation. The relative timing of diagenetic events was constrained based on thin-section observations and stable isotope analyses. Near-surface diagenesis is dominated by reflux-related processes, leading to porosity inversion in initial highly porous facies and a patchy distribution of early cements. This strong diagenetic overprint of primary and early diagenetic porosity by reflux-related cements leads to a reduction of stratigraphic and facies control on porosity. Calcite was identified as a burial-related cement phase that leads to an almost complete loss of intercrystalline porosity and permeability. Bitumen is an important pore-occluding phase and time marker of the deep-burial realm. The stratigraphic position of the dolomite reservoirs embedded at the base of a salt diapir had a strong impact on its diagenetic development. The salt isolated the dolomites from external fluids, leading to a closed system diagenesis and the buildup of near lithostatic fluid pressures. In combination, these processes decreased the impact of further burial diagenetic processes. The study highlights that cement distribution in salt-encased carbonate reservoirs is mainly related to early diagenetic processes but can be very heterogeneous on a field scale.
