Simple Summary: During the last glaciation, the nature of the northern hemisphere of the Earth underwent significant changes. Nonetheless, it underwent no less serious changes after the melting of the glacier, when, under the conditions of climate mitigation, the gradual formation of modern landscapes began in the spaces freed from ice. This study is devoted to the reconstruction of the post-glacial environment in one of the regions of Eastern Europe, in the south-eastern part of the Baltics. The uniquely preserved deposits of one of the post-glacial basins discovered here made it possible to reconstruct in detail the changes in climate, vegetation, and aquatic organisms in the time interval of 14–13.4 thousand years ago. The study revealed that during this period there were short-lasting climate fluctuations (warmings and coolings), which caused repeated changes in all components of the local nature. The results of the study contribute to understanding the complex processes of planetary climate formation, as well as the impact of climate on nature both at local and global levels, which is necessary not only for understanding the past, but also for predicting the future of all living organisms on the planet. This paper presents the results of a study on the Kulikovo section (south-eastern Baltic Sea coast), a sediment sequence exposing deposits of a post-glacial basin that existed along the edge of the glacier in the Late Pleistocene. The research was targeted at the reconstruction of the dynamics of the local environmental systems in response to climatic oscillations of the Lateglacial (the Older Dryas—first half of the Allerød). The evolution of the local biotic components on the territories of the Baltic region after the ice retreat is still poorly understood. Data from geochronological, lithological, diatom, algo-zoological and palynological analyses provide a reconstruction of local aquatic and terrestrial biocenoses and their response to short-term warmings and coolings that took place 14,000–13,400 cal yr BP. This study has demonstrated that, during the Older Dryas and first part of the Allerød (GI-1d and GI-1c), the aquatic and terrestrial environment of the Kulikovo basin underwent several changes, resulting in eight stages of the basin evolution, most probably related to the short-term climatic fluctuations that could have had a duration of several decades. The data obtained in this study have revealed the fairly dynamic and complex evolution of the pioneer landscapes, as indicated by the changes in the hydrological regime of the area and by the traced successions of plant communities from the pioneer swampy vegetation to park and real forests towards the middle of the Allerød. The paper studies sediments from Lake Tikozero that have accumulated successively in the littoral of Lake pre‐Imandra, Imandra lagoon, and an open lake isolated from a parental freshwater body. The 'Apatity' bog was concurrently formed on the Lake Imandra coast. Lithological, 14C, pollen and diatom data and findings of previous investigations provide the regional Holocene stratigraphy, which is subdivided into the early (c. 11 550–8200 cal a bp), middle (c. 8200–4000 cal a bp) and late (last 4000 cal a bp) Holocene sub‐stages. In the early Holocene, environments became favourable for diatoms after c. 9700 cal a bp. Birch phytocoenoses and pine forests with birch flourished in the area. In the middle Holocene, the west‐central Kola Peninsula was covered by a pine‐birch forest with alders. Lake Tikozero became shallow and desiccated in a warm and dry climate between c. 6300 and 4000 cal a bp; and a Sphagnum raised bog developed in the adjacent area, provoked by lowering of the water table. Spruce appeared in a pine‐birch forest and indicates a colder and wetter climate in the late Holocene. This paper examines a 115 cm long profile section of lacustrine-swamp sediments from the Langou I Bay (eastern part of Primorsky Krai; 44°25′10.16″ N, 135°54′26.08″ E). According to the produced age model, the sediments are 3900 years old. A multiproxy study involving geochemical, chironomid, diatom, and palynological analysis indicates that the climatic and environmental conditions on the seacoast in the eastern part of Primorsky Krai developed in many respects synchronously with known climatic phases of the Late Holocene. The period from ca. 4200 to 2600 cal years BP corresponds to the first and second warm stages of the Jōmon period and the late Jōmon transgression in Japan. The peak of summer temperatures in the vicinity of the Langou I Bay occurred between 2900 and 2600 cal years BP. The cooling that began after 2600 cal years BP was not as severe in the study area as in Japan (cold Jōmon and Kofun stages): the reconstructed temperatures were 1°C lower than now; in Japan, they were 2–3°C below the current level. The Medieval Climate Optimum (Nara–Heian–Kamakura stage in Japan) reconstructed for the eastern part of Primorsky Krai in the period from 1250 to 750 cal years BP featured a humid climate with summer temperatures ca. 1.5°C higher than at present. The period between 750 and 250 cal years BP correlates with the Little Ice Age: summer temperatures had dropped to 1.5–2°C below the modern one. Only a few palaeo-records extend beyond the Holocene in Yakutia, eastern Siberia, since most of the lakes in the region are of Holocene thermokarst origin. Thus, we have a poor understanding of the long-term interactions between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and their response to climate change. The Lake Khamra region in southwestern Yakutia is of particular interest because it is in the transition zones from discontinuous to sporadic permafrost and from summergreen to evergreen boreal forests. Our multiproxy study of Lake Khamra sediments reaching back to the Last Glacial Maximum 21 cal ka BP, includes analyses of organic carbon, nitrogen, XRF-derived elements, sedimentary ancient DNA amplicon sequencing of aquatic and terrestrial plants and diatoms, as well as classical counting of pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs (NPP). The palaeogenetic approach revealed 45 diatom, 191 terrestrial plant, and 65 aquatic macrophyte taxa. Pollen analyses identified 34 pollen taxa and 28 NPP taxa. The inferred terrestrial ecosystem of the Last Glacial comprises tundra vegetation dominated by forbs and grasses, likely inhabited by megaherbivores. By 18.4 cal ka BP a lake had developed with a high abundance of macrophytes and dominant fragilarioid diatoms, while shrubs expanded around the lake. In the Bolling-Allerod at 14.7 cal ka BP both the terrestrial and aquatic systems reflect climate amelioration, alongside lake water-level rise and woodland establishment, which was curbed by the Younger Dryas cooling. In the Early Holocene warmer and wetter climate led to taiga development and lake waterlevel rise, reflected by diatom composition turnover from only epiphytic to planktonic diatoms. In the Mid-Holocene the lake water level decreased at ca. 8.2 cal ka BP and increased again at ca. 6.5 cal ka BP. At the same time mixed evergreen-summergreen forest expanded. In the Late Holocene, at ca. 4 cal ka BP, vegetation cover similar to modern conditions established. This study reveals the long-term shifts in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and a comprehensive understanding of lake development and catchment history of the Lake Khamra region. The paper is focused on changes in biodiversity, the environment, and human activity in the Uvs Nuur Basin during the last three millennia based on biological and geochemical proxies from the lake Bayan Nuur. Regions with high biodiversity and relatively low anthropogenic pressures are typically the most vulnerable to both climate change and human activities. One such area is the Uvs Nuur Basin located on the north of the Great Lake Depression of Mongolia. The main objective of this study is to assess changes in the past biodiversity of the lake's microflora and microfauna, and surrounding vegetation biodiversity in the Uvs Nuur Basin, and to determine the main drivers of diversity change. Based on the analysis of pollen and chironomids we conclude that the most humid and afforested phase was between 1400 and 1800 CE. We assume that the Little Ice Age in the Uvs Nuur Basin was humid with mean annual precipitation ca. 305 mm/year and mean July temperature about 13°C. Conversely, the warmest and most arid period was between 650 and 1350 CE with mean annual precipitation ca. 280 mm/year and mean July temperature of about 16°C, attributed to the Medieval Warm Period. The biodiversity of terrestrial plants, chironomids, and Cladocera positive react to changes in annual precipitation and July temperature, whereas diatoms do not correlate directly to the climatic factors. The diversity and the evenness of plants are strongly correlated with the change in the leading biomes. The calculated species turnover suggests no significant changes in plant and Cladocera taxa composition, but significant changes in diatom and chironomid communities. This may be explained by the instability of lake ecology due to the fluctuation of the salinity and acidity of the water. An additional aim was to assess if dung fungi in lacustrine sediments reflect changes in human population density around the lake. We found that neither historical sources of human presence nor the influx of coprophilous fungi are correlated with the inferred climate changes. Coprophilous fungi can be used as individual or additional sources of assessment for the peopling and human-related herbivore density including overgrazing of the studied area. The climate variability and related sea-level changes during the Holocene are still under discussion, especially in a regional context. Very little information comes from the southern and south-eastern Baltic coast. The aim of the paper is to gain insight on the history of regional environmental changes, particularly sea-level and storminess, and their driving forces. The investigations were located on a peatland on the coast of Puck Lagoon (Gulf of Gdańsk, southern Baltic Sea). The analysis of peat core comprised: radiocarbon dating, analysis of stable isotopes 18O and 13C and chemical components, as well as palynological and diatomic studies. Results showed the 1.0 m peat section accumulated over 1500 years, with a time resolution of 100 years per sample. The average water level in the Puck Lagoon rose by ca. 0.85 m during the last 1500 years in a cyclic mode, with a period cycle of ca. 600–550 years and an amplitude not exceeding 0.5 m. The accelerated sea level rise and frequent storminess occurred during the first half of the Dark Ages (1500−1300 years b2k) and LIA (750−450 years b2k) and since the beginning of the 20th century. Recognized environmental changes are well correlated with both temperature changes in the North Atlantic and changes in total solar irradiance, suggesting synchronous Northern Hemisphere-wide fluctuations. The hemispheric-scale climatic fluctuations during the Holocene have probably influenced the large Siberian rivers. However, detailed studies of the West Siberian Plain postglacial environmental change are scarce and the records of millennial-scale palaeohydrology are nearly absent. This paper presents the Holocene palaeoecological reconstruction based on the sedimentary record of Lake Svetlenkoye, located near the confluence of major Siberian rivers Ob and Irtysh. Postglacial history of flooding, dynamics of regional and local vegetation, sedimentation regime, geochemical changes and lake water pH were reconstructed based on multi-proxy studies. We used palaeobotanical (plant macrofossils, pollen, diatoms), geochemical (organic matter, total organic carbon and nitrogen content, carbon/nitrogen ratio) and chronological (14C dates, spheroidal fly-ash particle counts) methods. The studied sediment section started to accumulate ~11,400 cal. yr BP. The initial shallow water body was flooded by Ob River waters ~8100–8000 cal. yr BP as confirmed by a remarkable increase in the sedimentation rate and the accumulation rate of the aquatic vegetation proxies. The period of flooding coincides with the high humidity periods reconstructed from regional palaeobotanical records. About 6800–6700 cal. yr BP, the study site became isolated from the Ob River floodplain and remained a small lake until present. The diatom-based lake water pH estimates suggest fluctuations in the pH values during the Holocene, the recent decrease since 1960s being the most notable. The vegetation record revealed constant postglacial presence of tree taxa – Betula, Pinus and Picea – although in different pollen ratios and accumulation rates through time. Sediment cores obtained from two deep (>15 m) glacial lakes were analyzed in context of terrestrial vegetation development and in-lake processes from the Retezat Mountains (Southern Carpathians, Romania). Only the Holocene parts were chosen for study for testing what is the connection between geochemical changes and biotas around and in the lakes. The lakes are situated at slightly different altitudes on the northern (Lake Gales, 1990 m a.s.l.) and southern slope (Lake Bucura, 2040 m a.s.l.), respectively. Changes in geochemical composition were relatively low amplitude during the studied period (10,300–1790 and 10,300–695 cal yr BP) in both lakes, but the applicability of enrichment factor (EF) for geochemical elements and diatom ecological traits (guilds) in paleoecological reconstruction were demonstrated in this paper. The main changes have been observed at ca. 10,670–9000, 6500 and 3100 cal yr BP in geochemistry, vegetation and siliceous algal assemblages. Catchment soil stabilization was apparent from ∼9000 cal yr BP onwards, in-lake and terrestrial productivity was the highest between 9000 and 6500 cal yr BP and human impact became the dominant driver in both terrestrial vegetation and sediment geochemical changes and in-lake processes over the last ∼3400 years in both lakes. A continuous record of paleogeographic events in southeastern Primorye has been restored based on the data from the deposits of Gniloe Lake, located on the northern coast of Nakhodka Bay, starting from 3240 cal BP. In total, five warming periods were identified: 3240–2500, 1865–1650, 1330–840, and 730–625 cal BP, and from the second half of the 17th century to the present; four periods of cooling: 2500–1865, 1650–1330, 840–730, and 625–320 cal BP; six wet periods: 3240–2500, 1865–1650, 1480–1330, 1060–840, 730–625 cal BP, and the last 280 years; and five dry periods: 2500–1865, 1650–1480, 1330–1060, 840–730, and 625–210 cal BP. According to palynological analysis, the expansion of Pinus koraiensis and dark coniferous species occurred during the second phase of the Mid-Subatlantic cooling of 1480–1330 cal BP. Over the last 150 years, the most significant changes have been associated with the anthropogenic transformation of landscapes as a result of urbanization. The area of forests and their species composition have decreased. At present, shrub thickets have occupied areas of the deforested oak forests. Based on the results of diatom analysis, seven stages of development of Gniloe Lake were established. There was a shallow semi-open lagoon at a sea level 1–1.5 m higher than the present-day one about 3240 cal BP. Cooling and a decrease in humidity about 2500 cal BP led to the formation of a slightly saline half-closed lagoon. Shallowing of the lagoon about 2000 cal BP ago was due to a decrease in the sea level. Finally, the lagoon separated from the sea about 1450 cal BP. The transformation of the lagoon into a fresh lake occurred around 1080 cal BP. During the period of cooling 838–733 cal BP the shallowing of the lake began, which continued in the Little Ice Age. The increase of the lake level associated with moderate warming and an increase in humidity began at 210 cal BP. Traces of three catastrophic events were recorded in the sediments of Gniloe Lake: a high-level storm about 3000 cal BP and 2 tsunamis around 2000 and 1560 cal BP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High‐quality records of hydroclimate variability in central Mexico during the last 2000 years are necessary to better understand human–environment interactions in Mesoamerica. Of particular interest are the climatic conditions during the Epiclassic period (ad 600–900), as droughts have been associated with a cultural demise occurring around ad 900–1000. We reconstruct the hydroclimate history of the last 2000 years based on a sediment record from a drought‐sensitive lake located near one of the most important Epiclassic city‐states in Mesoamerica. Titanium concentrations, pollen and diatoms give a consistent environmental signal of five droughts occurring at about: (i) ad 50–250, (ii) ad 700–950, (iii) ad 1200–1300, (iv) ad 1450–1550 and (v) ad 1760–1820. Some droughts were associated with cooler climatic conditions, and all of them framed major historical events. Our results show that the great cultural development of the Epiclassic period (ad 600–900) was framed by a scenario of drought conditions followed by abandonment at ad 900–1000. A brief return to moister conditions is recorded before another drought during the time of the fall of the city‐state of Tula (1200). A robust understanding of the impact of anthropogenic activities on high-altitude tropical aquatic ecosystems is key for the conservation and protection of the Tropical Andean biodiversity hot spot. We present the results of a multiproxy study of lake sediments from the high Andean páramo of El Cajas National Park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve in Ecuador. The main site, Laguna Pallcacocha, is well known for recording El Niño–driven clastic flood layers that are triggered by high-intensity rainfall anomalies from the eastern Pacific. The second site, Laguna El Ocho, does not contain clastic laminations, providing a control. The records show abrupt shifts in diatom assemblages ca. AD 1991 in both high-elevation Andean lakes accompanied by local changes in páramo composition that suggest a sudden nutrient enrichment of the environment. The diatom assemblages from Laguna Pallcacocha, in relation to the clastic input events, are remarkably stable and do not show evident El Niño signals at the analysed resolution. Based on comparison with the nonlaminated El Ocho record, we deduce the main source of this nutrient enrichment to be the construction of a heavily transited road that runs through the park, while climate warming played secondary role by amplifying its effects. During the warm middle Eocene (ca 45 Ma), the Napartulik area (also called 'the Geodetic Hills'), Axel Heiberg Island, northern Canada (Nunavut), was vegetated with mixed broad-leaved deciduous angiosperm and evergreen conifer forests over extensive floodplain and forested wetland habitats. Massive organic rich sedimentary successions and encapsulated in-situ tree trunks suggest these forests were drowned by frequent flooding events. The sedimentary layers contain sub-fossil amber that was produced by representatives of the Pinaceae such as Pseudolarix. The amber offered an opportunity to investigate aerial plankton and thus the chance to discover microfossils, which could provide evidence of biotic interactions associated with, or the cause of, the forest die-offs. Fifty-four amber samples were subjected to a solvent treatment for microfossil extraction followed by light microscopy, resulting in the discovery of several hundred microfossils. Unexpectedly, one-quarter of the microfossils were diatoms, which may predominantly have lived on the tree bark. Fungal spores were rare, and the pollen grains found corroborated earlier findings in litter or coal. The records of fungal spores and arthropod remains were insignificant and could, therefore, not substantially have been contributing to the forest die-offs. A 27.15-m-long core from Lake Chapala, west-central Mexico (1520 masl) possesses a continuous 15,000-year record of sediment accumulation with abundant diatoms, pollen, charcoal particles, and organic and inorganic carbon. Analyses of multiple sediment variables revealed the lake was deep, dominated by Stephanodiscus niagarae, and was surrounded by temperate forests of Pinus, Quercus, and Alnus in the late Pleistocene (14,700–12,760 cal yr BP). During the Pleistocene-Holocene transition (12,760–9660 cal yr BP), the lake level dropped and a temperate forest of Pinus and Quercus occupied the watershed and was persistently affected by fire. During the earliest Holocene, Quercus nearly disappeared and Pinus, relatively abundant, declined abruptly. Pollen of dry forests became more common, indicating the onset of drier conditions in the region. During the interval from 7500 to 6500 cal yr BP, more humid climate conditions prevailed and abundant Surirella spp. diatom valves were well preserved. Sediments of the time also contain Stephanodiscus niagarae and Ulnaria acus, suggesting deep-water conditions. Between 6500 and 2000 cal yr BP, the lake experienced higher conductivity and longer water residence times. The Pinus and Quercus forests began to be replaced by open vegetation, with Asteraceae and Poaceae dominating the pollen spectrum. Lake level fluctuated, but overall declined. Between the interval of ca. 2 ky to 0.5 cal yr BP basin conditions remained relatively wet. During the last ~ 0.5 kyr BP to present day, the lake level declined and ionic concentration increased, as inferred from representation of planktonic and benthic saline diatom taxa and TIC increases. Numerous micro-tephras are common in this interval; additionally, frequent fires favored the dominance of Poaceae. Paleolimnological records suggest that after the Last Glacial Maximum, Chapala and other lakes of west-central Mexico maintained relatively high water levels. Some records from the region showed evidence of increased humidity beginning ca. 8200 cal yr BP, a consequence of strength intensification in North American Monsoon, associated with ENSO variability and/or tropical cyclones. The record from the last 0.5 cal yr BP in Lake Chapala is similar to records from other lakes in Central Mexico, as it displays a trend toward drier conditions with a more variable precipitation regime. Pollen and diatom assemblages from well-dated sediment cores from three lakes forming a west-to-east transect across the boreal forest in northwest Ontario (Canada) were used to evaluate the timing and nature of the movement of the prairie-forest ecotone (PFE) across the Holocene. Changes in vegetation, temperature, and effective moisture were inferred from pollen and pollen-based transfer functions. Analyses indicated site-specific vegetational and climate changes across short spatial distances, with prolonged prairie-like conditions during the middle Holocene at the westernmost site. Increased reconstructed temperatures at this westernmost site occurred from ∼9000 to 3000 cal yr BP, alongside increases in diatom-inferred lake levels beginning at ∼6000 cal yr BP. The abundance of Quercus peaked concurrently with rising lake levels before declining to trace levels by ∼3000 cal yr BP. Increases in the abundance of non-arboreal pollen between ∼8500 and ∼4500 cal yr BP at the more eastern lakes suggest relatively delayed and truncated PFE influence, before the reestablishment of primarily boreal taxa by ∼4500 cal yr BP, coincident with diatom-inferred increases in lake levels. This study shows that the PFE moved both farther east and north than previously determined, but generally agrees with established patterns in vegetation from other studied regions along the PFE. Changes in climate and fire regime have long been recognized as drivers of the postglacial vegetation history of Yellowstone National Park, but the effects of locally dramatic hydrothermal activity are poorly known. Multi-proxy records from Goose Lake have been used to describe the history of Lower Geyser Basin where modern hydrothermal activity is widespread. From 10,300 cal yr BP to 3800 cal yr BP, thermal waters discharged into the lake, as evidenced by the deposition of arsenic-rich sediment, fluorite mud, and relatively high δ13Csediment values. Partially thermal conditions affected the limnobiotic composition, but prevailing climate, fire regime, and rhyolitic substrate maintained Pinus contorta forest in the basin, as found throughout the region. At 3800 cal yr BP, thermal water discharge into Goose Lake ceased, as evidenced by a shift in sediment geochemistry and limnobiota. Pollen and charcoal data indicate concurrent grassland development with limited fuel biomass and less fire activity, despite late Holocene climate conditions that were conducive to expanded forest cover. The shift in hydrothermal activity at Goose Lake and establishment of the treeless geyser basin may have been the result of a tectonic event or change in hydroclimate. Recent Arctic warming has major influences on biological communities, especially in freshwater environments. There is substantial evidence that lake ecosystems in the Canadian Arctic and Fennoscandia are undergoing changes that have been linked to human-induced climate warming during the past 150–100 years. However, only few data linking recent climatic changes with the changes in biological communities are available from the Russian Arctic. We investigated a short sediment core (bottom of the core dates to 1830 CE) from Lake Bolshoy Kharbey, the biggest lake of the Bol'shezemelskaya Tundra, western Russian Arctic, using chironomid, cladocera, diatom and palynological analyses. Variations in biological proxy were linked to regional meteorological data and compared with the available sub-recent palaeoecological and hydrobiological studies from the region. The overall change in species composition was the smallest for terrestrial vegetation (0.485 SD) followed by cladoceran communities (0.966 SD). Chironomid taxonomic turnover was 1.331 SD, and the greatest rate of change was observed in diatom assemblages (1.701 SD). Changes in biological communities demonstrated a correlation with meteorologically recorded climatic parameters (air temperature and precipitation). The strongest taxonomic shifts in biological communities took place in 1880 and 1980. Both dates can be linked with prominent and recent climatic events: 1880 can be related to the end of the Little Ice Age in the region and 1980 is the beginning of the modern accelerating warming. Few fossil‐based environmental and climate records in northern Europe are dated to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5a around 80 ka BP. We here present multiple environmental and climate proxies obtained from a lake sequence of MIS 5a age in the Sokli basin (northern Finland). Pollen/spores, plant macrofossils, NPPs (e.g. green algae), bryozoa, diatoms and chironomids allowed an exceptionally detailed reconstruction of aquatic and telmatic ecosystem successions related to the development of the Sokli Ice Lake and subsequent infilling of a relatively small and shallow lake confined to the Sokli basin. A regional vegetation development typical for the early half of an interglacial is recorded by the pollen, stomata and plant macrofossil data. Reconstructions of July temperatures based on pollen assemblages suffer from a large contribution of local pollen from the lake's littoral zone. Summer temperatures reaching present‐day values, inferred for the upper part of the lake sequence, however, agree with the establishment of pine‐dominated boreal forest indicated by the plant fossil data. Habitat preferences also influence the climate record based on chironomids. Nevertheless, the climate optima of the predominant intermediate‐ to warm‐water chironomid taxa suggest July temperatures exceeding present‐day values by up to several degrees, in line with climate inferences from a variety of aquatic and wetland plant indicator species. The disequilibrium between regional vegetation development and warm, insolation‐forced summers is also reported for Early Holocene records from northern Fennoscandia. The MIS 5a sequence is the last remaining fossil‐bearing deposit in the late Quaternary basin infill at Sokli to be studied using multi‐proxy evidence. A unique detailed climate record for MIS 5 is now available for formerly glaciated northern Europe. Our studies indicate that interglacial conditions persisted into MIS 5a, in agreement with data for large parts of the European mainland, shortening the Last Glacial by some 50 ka to MIS 4‐2. The history and continuity of lowland woodlands in Central Europe is closely connected with human activities. We studied a small wetland situated directly in a low-elevation oak-dominated woodland to evaluate the history and impact of humans on an oak woodland in south-eastern Slovakia. We used different proxies to obtain evidence of woodland history spanning at least 8,500 years. Pollen, diatom and physical analysis, including micromorphology, were used to study infill sediments and to determine the processes causing the influx of material into the wetland basin from its surroundings. The oak-dominated woodland community occurred throughout the Holocene, but its detailed history is impossible to trace because of reverse chronology caused by mixing of deposits. The stability of the oak woodland was determined by anthropogenic disturbances such as grazing. These disturbances are indicated by pollen taxa, signals of soil erosion in the deposits, and local development of the wetland that acted as drinking and hemp retting basin. The recent decline of human pressure has led to gradual changes in the species composition of the wetland itself (shrub encroachment) and of understory of the surrounding oak woodlands. This work presents the results of integrated micropaleontological and lithogeochemical analysis of Upper Oligocene continental deposits of the Turtas Formation from the Zyryanskaya-1 borehole (southwestern part of the Tyumen Region, Western Siberia). The predominance of freshwater planktonic diatoms at the subordinate significance of benthic species, as well as the presence of gemmuloscleres of sponges, indicates the coastal sedimentation conditions in a freshwater basin varying in depth from 3 to 50 m. The studied palynocomplex is similar to the spore-and-pollen spectra of the Turtas Formation of the Lower Ob Region, but differs from palynocomplexes of the same formation spread over the southern regions of Western Siberia in a low amount of Taxodiaceae/Cupressaceae and Betulaceae pollen, as well as the absence of Fagaceae pollen and Pseudokomewuia freshwater dinocysts. The revealed differences can be explained both by facies features and by variations in the volume of the Turtas Formation in the currently known localities. The data on the microelemental composition of samples, as well as geochemical and petrogeochemical modules, indicate that the accumulation of the Turtas Formation occurred in the coastal areas of a low-mineralized basin under relatively warm humid climatic conditions. Shallow lowland lakes undergo long-lasting natural eutrophication processes, which can be studied through the development of communities of aquatic organisms. However, records showing millennial-scale trophic status variability in these water bodies are rare. Two radiocarbon-dated sedimentary profiles from former (now destroyed by brown coal mining) Lake Komořany (Central Europe, Czech Republic) served for a multi-proxy study of biological remains (diatoms, chironomids, pollen) supplemented by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and loss-on-ignition (LOI). The age–depth model and palynostratigraphy confirm a continuous Late-Glacial to Early-Holocene record. The results suggest consistent in-lake conditions with high nutrient availability since the lake origin in the Late-Glacial period. A distinct shift at the Late-Glacial/Holocene boundary evidenced by an enhancement in diatom valve concentration and a lithological interface was foregone by a qualitative change in diatom and chironomid assemblages along with rise in LOI. It suggests that a major transformation occurred before the onset of the Holocene. As this qualitative change was characterized by a decrease in relative abundance of nutrient-demanding species, we propose an indirect climatic control by means of nutrient availability as the main driver of the aquatic species composition. The study reports the micro- and macrobotanical remains on wild Yak dung, providing evidence for understanding the diet, habitat, and ecology of extant and extinct megaherbivores. Grasses are the primary diet of the yak as indicated by the abundance of grass pollen and phytoliths. Other associated non-arboreal and arboreal taxa namely, Cyperacaeae, Rosaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Artemisia, Prunus, and Rhododendron are also important dietary plants for their living. The observation of plant macrobotanical remains especially the vegetative part and seeds of the grasses and Cyperaceae is also in agreement with the palynodata. The documented micro- and macrobotanical data are indicative of both Alpine meadow and steppe vegetation under cold and dry climate which exactly reflected the current vegetation composition and climate in the region. The recovery of Botryococcus, Arcella, and diatom was observed in trace amounts in the palynoassemblage which would have been incorporated in the dung through the ingestion of water and are indicative of the presence of perennial water system in the region. Energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis marked that the element contained in dung samples has variation in relation to the summer and winter, which might be due to the availability of the food plants and vegetation. This generated multiproxy data serves as a strong supplementary data for modern pollen and vegetation relationships based on surface soil samples in the region. The recorded multiproxy data could also be useful to interpret the relationship between the coprolites of herbivorous fauna and the palaeodietary, the palaeoecology in the region, and to correlate with other mega herbivores in a global context. A high-resolution diatom sequence was developed from continuously laminated lake sediments in southwestern Québec, which spanned the Holocene (~11,000 yr). General and species-specific changes in the diatom record were synchronous with patterns of vegetation succession inferred from regional palynological studies, demonstrating significant influences of terrestrial ecosystems on lake water chemistry and aquatic biota. Principal components analysis was used to identify three major diatom biostratigraphic zones corresponding broadly to early, mid-, and late Holocene climate intervals. Benthic alkaliphilus diatom taxa were abundant when the landscape was a Picea-dominated woodland in the early Holocene (11.1-8.0 ka), and when climate conditions were inferred as relatively cool and dry. In the mid-Holocene (8.0-3.6 ka), warmer temperatures resulted in a stabilization of soils and forests in the catchment area. Shade-tolerant tree species (Tsuga, Fagus, and Betula) increased during this time, and planktonic diatom taxa (Discostella stelligera and Fragilaria tenera) were abundant in the lake. The well-known decline in Tsuga across eastern North America between 6.0 and 5.0 ka corresponded to a shift toward more nutrient-rich lake conditions for several centuries, indicated by an increase in benthic diatom taxa and a lower ratio of chrysophytes relative to diatoms. Neoglacial cooling in the late Holocene (3.6 ka to present) triggered an initial decline in D. stelligera, which later recovered as a result of nutrient inputs that were associated with increased abundances of hardwood, deciduous species (Betula and Alnus) in the catchment. In addition to providing a high-resolution record of lake ontogeny for the region, the full Holocene record from this lake adds a new perspective on the spatial extent of regional aridity during the MedievalWarm Period (1.2-0.8 ka). Abstract: Critical transitions in ecosystem states are often sudden and unpredictable. Consequently, there is a concerted effort to identify measurable early warning signals (EWS) for these important events. Aquatic ecosystems provide an opportunity to observe critical transitions due to their high sensitivity and rapid response times. Using palaeoecological techniques, we can measure properties of time series data to determine if critical transitions are preceded by any measurable ecosystem metrics, that is, identify EWS. Using a suite of palaeoenvironmental data spanning the last 2,400 years (diatoms, pollen, geochemistry, and charcoal influx), we assess whether a critical transition in diatom community structure was preceded by measurable EWS. Lake Vera, in the temperate rain forest of western Tasmania, Australia, has a diatom community dominated by Discostella stelligera and undergoes an abrupt compositional shift at ca. 820 cal yr BP that is concomitant with increased fire disturbance of the local vegetation. This shift is manifest as a transition from less oligotrophic acidic diatom flora (Achnanthidium minutissimum, Brachysira styriaca, and Fragilaria capucina) to more oligotrophic acidic taxa (Frustulia elongatissima, Eunotia diodon, and Gomphonema multiforme). We observe a marked increase in compositional variance and rate‐of‐change prior to this critical transition, revealing these metrics are useful EWS in this system. Interestingly, vegetation remains complacent to fire disturbance until after the shift in the diatom community. Disturbance taxa invade and the vegetation system experiences an increase in both compositional variance and rate‐of‐change. Population dynamics is a field rich in theory and poor in long-term observational data. Finding sources of long-term data is critical as ecosystems around the globe continue to change in ways that current theories and models have failed to predict. Here we show how long-term ecological data can improve our understanding about palaeo-population change in response to external environmental factors, antecedent conditions and community diversity., We examined a radiometrically dated sediment core from the Didachara Mire in the mountains of south-western Georgia (Caucasus) and analysed multiple biological proxies (pollen, fern spores, non-pollen palynomorphs, charcoal, diatoms, chrysophyte cysts, midges, mites and testate amoebae). Numerical techniques, including multivariate ordination, rarefaction, independent splitting and trait analysis, were used to assess the major drivers of changes in community diversity and population stability. Integrated multi-proxy analyses are very rare in the Caucasus, making this a unique record of long-term ecological change in a global biodiversity hotspot., Synthesis. Population changes in the terrestrial community coincided primarily with external environmental changes, while populations within the peatland community were affected by both internal and external drivers at different times. In general, our observations accord with theoretical predictions that population increases lead to greater stability and declines lead to instability. Random variation and interspecific competition explain population dynamics that diverged from predictions. Population change and diversity trends were positively correlated in all taxonomic groups, suggesting that population-level instability is greater in more diverse communities, even though diverse communities are themselves more stable. There is a continuing need to confront population theory with long-term data to test the predictive success of theoretical frameworks, thereby improving their ability to predict future change. ABSTRACT The eastern Lesotho Highlands host an array of periglacial and glacial geomorphic features. Their analysis has provided past climate interpretations predominantly for cold periods, yet no multi-proxy temporally continuous palaeoenvironmental records exist. This study presents a palaeoenvironmental reconstruction based on sedimentary characteristics, fossil pollen and diatoms from an alpine wetland located in the Sekhokong Mountain Range. The record commences in the late Pleistocene with a wet period from ∼16 450 to 14 440 cal a BP, interrupted by dry conditions from ∼16 350 to 15 870 cal a BP. From ∼14 150 to 8560 cal a BP, drier conditions are inferred, slowly transitioning to warmer, wetter conditions. Warmer, dry conditions are inferred for ∼8560-7430 cal a BP, followed by cold, wet conditions from ∼7280 to 6560 cal a BP. A dry, warmer period occurs from ∼6560 to 3640 cal a BP indicated by pollen, diatom and sedimentary records, followed by cool, wet conditions from ∼3400 to 1200 cal a BP. The period from ∼1110 cal a BP to the present is characterized by progressive drying. Pronounced cold events are detected from the diatom record. Moisture records appear relatively specific to the topographic setting of Sekhokong near the Great Escarpment edge, probably driven by orographically constrained synoptic controls. A Holocene lake sediment record spanning the past 7300 years from Wishart Lake in the Turkey Lakes Watershed in the Hemi-Boreal of central Ontario, Canada, was used to evaluate the potential drivers of long-term change in diatom assemblages at this site. An analysis of diatom assemblages found that benthic and epiphytic taxa dominated the mid-Holocene (7300–4000 cal yr BP), indicating shallow, oligotrophic, circum-neutral conditions, with macrophytes present. A significant shift in diatom assemblages towards more planktonic species (mainly Cyclotella sensu lato, but also several species of Aulacoseira, and Tabellaria flocculosa) occurred ~4000 cal yr BP. This change likely reflects an increase in lake level, coincident with the onset of a more strongly positive moisture balance following the drier climates of the middle Holocene, established by numerous regional paleoclimate records. Pollen-inferred regional changes in vegetation around 4000 yrs BP, including an increase in Betula and other mesic taxa, may have also promoted changes in diatom assemblages through watershed processes mediated by the chemistry of runoff. A more recent significant change in limnological conditions is marked by further increases in Cyclotella sensu lato beginning in the late 19th century, synchronous with the Ambrosia pollen rise and increases in sediment bulk density, signaling regional and local land clearance at the time of Euro-Canadian settlement (1880 AD). In contrast to the mid-Holocene increase in planktonic diatoms, the modern increase in Cyclotella sensu lato likely indicates a response to land use and vegetation change, and erosion from the watershed, rather than a further increase in water level. The results from Wishart Lake illustrate the close connection between paleoclimate change, regional vegetation, watershed processes, and diatom assemblages and also provides insight into the controls on abundance of Cyclotella sensu lato, a diatom taxonomic group which has shown significant increases and complex dynamics in the post-industrial era in lakes spanning temperate to Arctic regions. We present a palaeoenvironmental study of the Castelló lagoon (NE Spain), an important archive for understanding long-term interactions between dynamic littoral ecosystems and human management. Combining geochemistry, mineralogy, ostracods, diatoms, pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs, charcoal and archaeo-historical datasets we reconstruct: 1) the transition of the lagoon from a marine to a marginal environment between ~3150 cal BC to the 17th century AD; 2) fluctuations in salinity; and 3) natural and anthropogenic forces contributing to these changes. From the Late Neolithic to the Medieval period the lagoon ecosystem was driven by changing marine influence and the land was mainly exploited for grazing, with little evidence for impact on the natural woodland. Land-use exploitation adapted to natural coastal dynamics, with maximum marine flooding hampering agropastoral activities between ~1550 and ~150 cal BC. In contrast, societies actively controlled the lagoon dynamics and become a major agent of landscape transformation after the Medieval period. The removal of littoral woodlands after the 8th century was followed by the expansion of agrarian and industrial activities. Regional mining and smelting activities polluted the lagoon with heavy metals from the ~11th century onwards. The expansion of the milling industry and of agricultural lands led to the channelization of the river Muga into the lagoon after ~1250 cal AD. This caused its transformation into a freshwater lake, increased nutrient load, and the infilling and drainage of a great part of the lagoon. By tracking the shift towards an anthropogenically-controlled system around ~750 yr ago, this study points out Mediterranean lagoons as ancient and heavily-modified systems, with anthropogenic impacts and controls covering multi-centennial and even millennial timescales. Finally, we contributed to the future construction of reliable seashell-based chronologies in NE Spain by calibrating the Banyuls-sur-Mer ΔR offset with ceramic imports from the Emporiae archaeological site. Central Chile is heavily exploited for mineral and water resources, with agriculture and large urban populations all creating intensive landscape use. Few records of past environmental and climate change are available that afford a broader context. To aid in this assessment, we present a 700-year reconstruction from Laguna del Maule (LdM) in the high Andes of central Chile based on sedimentological, geochemical, diatom and pollen analyses. The age model is based on 210Pb/137Cs and 14C dating tied into known volcanic eruptions. Sedimentology consists of organic-rich sediments and diatom oozes with several interspersed volcanic-rich facies and two tephra deposits. Sediment geochemistry exhibits increased productivity (high Br/Ti, biosilica) and more dominant oxic conditions (high Fe/Mn) from AD 1300 to 1400 and from AD 1650 to 1850, likely during periods of relatively lower lake levels and better development of littoral environments. However, during this later period, high elevation vegetation was dominant, indicative of regional cooler/wetter conditions. In contrast, sediments deposited from AD 1850 to 1930 evidence decreased productivity and increased anoxic lake bottom conditions. The ‘Little Ice Age’ (LIA) in LdM is characterized by significant variations in lake dynamics and hydrology with cooler/wetter conditions (AD 1570–1700), major environmental changes in the 18th century and ending at ca. AD 1850. LdM record documents the impact of the LIA in the southern hemisphere and stresses the global nature of this climate period. Large changes in lake dynamics and diatoms assemblages during the 20th century could be related to anthropogenic impacts, but recent changes in climate patterns cannot be excluded. This study presents a detailed analysis of geochemical and biotic proxies in a lake sediment profile to assess the effects of local and regional environmental drivers on the Holocene development of Lake Loitsana, situated in the northern boreal forest of NE Finland. Multi-proxy studies, in particular those that include a detailed plant macrofossil record, from the part of the northern boreal zone of Fennoscandia which has not been affected by treeline fluctuations, are scarce and few of these records date back to the earliest part of the Holocene. A 9-m sediment sequence of gyttja overlying silts representing the last c. 10,700 cal year, allowed for a high-resolution study with emphasis on the early to mid-Holocene lake history. The lacustrine sediments were studied using lithology, loss-on-ignition and C/N ratios, micro- and macro-fossils of aquatic and wetland taxa, diatoms, chironomids and accelerator mass spectrometry C dating on terrestrial plant macrofossils. Our study shows that the local development at Loitsana was complex and included a distinct glacial lake phase and subsequent drainage, a history of fluvial input affected by nearby wetland expansion, and lake infilling in an eventual esker-fed shallow lake. Enhanced trophic conditions, due to morphometric eutrophication, are recorded as Glacial Lake Sokli drained and open water conditions became restricted to a relatively small Lake Loitsana depression. pH appears to have been stable throughout the Holocene with a well-buffered lake due to the local carbonatite bedrock (Sokli Carbonatite Massif). The fossil assemblage changes are best explained by a complex mixture of drivers, including water-body conditions (i.e. depth, turbidity and turbulence), rate of sediment input, and the general infilling of the lake, highlighting the need to carefully evaluate the possible influence of such local factors as palaeoenvironmental conditions are reconstructed based on aquatic proxies. Reservoirs provide important water resources and require careful management, through ecological monitoring, to identify and mitigate changes in water quality. Long-term data on vegetation changes and the impacts of human activities on reservoir water chemistry, however, are often limited. Setting restoration targets can therefore be problematic. Palaeoenvironmental research has made little use of reservoir sediments and there is great potential for palaeoecological data to be incorporated into management planning. Diatoms and pollen were analysed in sediment cores from Venford Reservoir, southwest England, to infer pH and land-use changes, respectively, over the last century. Diatom-inferred (DI) pH indicates that reservoir pH declined from ~pH 6.0 in the early part of the record and reached a low between AD 1920 and 1940 (~pH 5.6), which was likely associated with fossil fuel combustion and acid deposition. DI-pH then increased, but values remained relatively low, even in the most recent sediments (~pH 5.7), and the magnitude of inferred pH change over time was small. Land-use changes, such as increased grazing intensity and erosion, and establishment of pine plantations, also likely influenced reservoir water chemistry changes over time. Understanding the impacts of such factors on water chemistry has implications for future catchment land-use planning, which is essential for managing water resources. The pollen record indicates a shift from heather-dominated to grass-dominated vegetation since ~AD 1935-1950, which could be related to increased grazing intensity. Peatlands are remarkable for their specific biodiversity, crucial role in carbon cycling and climate change. Their deposits preserve organism remains that can be used to reconstruct long-term ecosystem and environmental changes as well as human impact in the prehistorical and historical past. This study presents a new multi-proxy reconstruction of the peatland and vegetation development investigating climate dynamics and human impact at the border between mixed and boreal forests in the Valdai Uplands (the East European Plain, Russia) during most of the Holocene. We performed plant macrofossil, pollen, testate amoeba, Cladocera, diatom, peat humification, loss on ignition, carbon and nitrogen content, δ13C and δ15N analyses supported by radiocarbon dating of the peat deposits from the Krivetskiy Mokh mire. The results of the study indicate that the wetland ecosystem underwent a classic hydroserial succession from a lake (8300 BC–900 BC) terrestrialized through a fen (900 BC–630 AD) to an ombrotrophic bog (630 AD–until present) and responded to climate changes documented over the Holocene. Each stage was associated with clear changes in local diversity of organisms responding mostly to autogenic successional changes during the lake stage and to allogenic factors at the fen-bog stage.
