Background: Maternal health service utilization decreases maternal morbidity and mortality. However, the existing evidence is inadequate to design effective intervention strategies in Ethiopia. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the utilization of maternal health service and identify its determinants among women of reproductive age in southern Ethiopia. Design: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from October 21 to November 11, 2022 on a sample of 1140 women selected randomly from the Northern Zone of the Sidama region. Methods: Data were collected using the Open Data Kit mobile application and exported to Stata version 15 for analysis. We used a multilevel mixed-effects modified Poisson regression with robust standard error to identify determinants of maternal health service utilization. Results: Utilization of antenatal care, health facility delivery, and postnatal care was 52.0% (95% confidence interval: 49.0%, 55.0%), 48.5% (95% confidence interval: 45.6%, 51.4%), and 26.0% (95% confidence interval: 23.0%, 29.0%), respectively. Antenatal care use was associated with receiving model family training (adjusted prevalence ratio: 1.19; 95% confidence interval: 1.06, 1.35), knowledge of antenatal care (adjusted prevalence ratio: 1.54; 95% confidence interval: 1.31, 1.81), perceived quality of antenatal care (adjusted prevalence ratio: 1.02; 95% confidence interval: 1.01, 1.03), and having birth preparedness plan (adjusted prevalence ratio: 1.13; 95% confidence interval: 1.02, 1.25). The identified determinants of health facility delivery use were middle wealth rank (adjusted prevalence ratio: 1.35; 95% confidence interval: 1.03, 1.77), perceived quality of health facility delivery (adjusted prevalence ratio: 1.02; 95% confidence interval: 1.01, 1.03), antenatal care (adjusted prevalence ratio: 1.76; 95% confidence interval: 1.36, 2.26), and high community-level women literacy (adjusted prevalence ratio: 1.55; 95% confidence interval: 1.10, 2.19). Postnatal care use was associated with facing health problems during postpartum period (adjusted prevalence ratio: 1.79; 95% confidence interval: 1.18, 2.72), urban residence (adjusted prevalence ratio: 3.52; 95% confidence interval: 2.15, 5.78), knowledge of postnatal care (adjusted prevalence ratio: 1.11; 95% confidence interval: 1.04, 1.19), and low community-level poverty (adjusted prevalence ratio: 0.43; 95% confidence interval: 0.25, 0.73). Conclusion: Maternal health service use was low in the study area and was influenced by individual- and community-level determinants. Any intervention strategies must consider multi-sectorial collaboration to address determinants at different levels. The programs should focus on the provision of model family training, the needs of women who have a poor perception, and knowledge of maternal health service at the individual level. Introduction: The Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (Brief-COPE) measures individuals' coping strategies. There is limited evidence on the psychometric properties of this measure in a perinatal population. The aim of this study is to explore the psychometric properties of the Brief COPE in pregnant and postpartum women. Methods: The Dutch/Flemish version of the Brief-COPE was administrated in a sample of 754 antenatal (n = 432) and postpartum (n = 322) women living in Belgium. Exploratory factor analyses assessed the factor structure of the Brief-COPE and its convergent validity in an antenatal and postpartum sample. Cronbach's alpha was calculated for internal consistency reliability of the Brief-COPE items. Results: Exploratory factor analysis showed a five-factor antenatal model, presented by the subscales: (1) Active coping (α = 0.86), (2) Self-blame and Disengagement (α = 0.70), (3) Alcohol use (α = 0.96), (4) Humour (α = 0.79), and (5) Spirituality (α = 0.81). For the postpartum sample, a three-factor model emerged, presented by the subscales: (1) Active coping (α = 0.85), (2) Self-blame (α = 0.85) and (3) Spirituality (α = 0.74). Conclusions: We observed differences and similarities in coping strategies between antenatal and postpartum women – information to be of merit for clinical practice and research. The Brief-COPE is a promising tool for the use of identifying women's coping strategies during pregnancy and the postpartum period, specifically for women in a similar cultural context as the women in this study, mainly in terms of antenatal alcohol use. Objective: To measure satisfaction with general practitioner obstetrician‐led maternity care in Western Australia and to explore perspectives of maternity service users Design: Women were recruited at antenatal visits with their general practitioner obstetrician. Participants completed a validated three‐part survey about their satisfaction with antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum care. They were all offered a semi‐structured interview. Setting: Nine general practitioner obstetrician practices located in regional Western Australia. Participants: 155 women receiving general practitioner obstetrician‐led maternity care within the South West or Great Southern regions of Western Australia. 13 of these women also participated in an interview. Main Outcome Measures: We quantified satisfaction with aspects of antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum care using a Likert scale. Descriptive variables included demographic information and birth outcomes. Qualitative data described valued aspects of maternity care. Results: 116 women completed all 3 surveys. General practitioner obstetrician‐led care resulted in high rates of satisfaction across all 3 stages of care, with 78%‐100% agreement with positively worded satisfaction statements. Thematic analysis identified four key aspects of care women valued when receiving maternity care: the woman‐centred care experience, the skills of the general practitioner obstetrician, support from the health care team and the health care environment. Conclusion: General practitioner obstetrician‐led maternity care is a highly regarded model of maternity care, valued by rural women with high rates of satisfaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The uptake of maternal healthcare services remains suboptimal in Ethiopia. Significant proportions of antenatal care attendees give birth at home in the context of HIV. However, in Ethiopia, evidence is scarce on the predictors of dropout from maternity continuum of care among HIV-positive mothers. Therefore, this study aimed to supply valuable information on risk factors regarding dropout of HIV-positive mothers for institutional delivery services in northwest Ethiopia.Methods: A multicenter case-control study was conducted at governmental health facilities in Gondar City from May one to June 30/2018. A total of 222 HIV-positive women were included in the study. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and checklists through face-to-face interview and chart review; entered into EPI INFO version seven, and then exported to SPSS version 25. Both descriptive and analytical procedures were performed. Binary logistic regression analysis was undertaken. A significant association was declared based on the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with its 95% CI and p-value of ≤ 0.05.Results: This study illustrates that maternal age of ≥ 35 years (AOR = 2.37; 95%CI: 1.13,5.13), unmarried marital relation (AOR = 3.28; 95%CI: 1.51, 7.13), unemployed spousal occupation (AOR = 3.91; 95%CI: 1.54, 9.91), family monthly income of ≤ 36 US dollar (AOR = 4.87; 95%CI: 2.08, 11.42) and no obstetric complication in the index pregnancy (AOR = 13.89; 95%CI: 2.73, 27.71) were positively associated with dropout from institutional delivery among HIV positive antenatal care booked mothers.Conclusion: In this study, the risk factors of dropout from institutional delivery in the context of HIV-positive women were connected to social determinants of health such as advanced maternal age, unmarried marital status, unemployed husband occupation, and low family income. Therefore, interacting with the health system by focusing on these women in lower socio-economic strata and unmarried HIV-positive ANC attendees, and increasing access to information on obstetric complications during the antenatal care visit would retain clients in the continuum of maternity services. Introduction: The purpose of this article is to review the beliefs, perceptions, and experience of maternal health among Marshallese women. Methodology: The study utilized a qualitative descriptive design with a brief survey of participant demographics. A purposive sample of 43 participants were enrolled. Results: The mean age of participants was 40 years. Four a priori themes were identified as follows: (a) family planning beliefs and experiences, (b) prenatal beliefs and experiences, (c) birthing beliefs and experiences, and (d) postpartum beliefs and experiences. Discussion: This study identified beliefs, perceptions, and experiences among Marshallese that have implications for policy and practice related to culturally congruent health care for Marshallese mothers. Background: Maternal death remains a public health burden in the developing countries including Nigeria and the major causes are pregnancy related. Lack of male involvement in pregnancy related care is one of the contributing factors. Previous studies on male involvement focused on family planning services and were majorly targeted at women. This study, therefore, was carried out to assess the knowledge, perception and involvement of male partners in pregnancy related care among married men in Ibadan, Nigeria. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted using a four-stage sampling technique to select 367 married men in an urban community in Ibadan. A semi-structured, interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to obtain information on the knowledge, perception and involvement of respondents regarding pregnancy related care. Responses to questions on knowledge of pregnancy related care were converted to a 33-point scale. Scores greater than or equal to the mean knowledge score (26.2) were categorized as good knowledge of pregnancy related care. Similarly, responses to involvement in pregnancy related care questions were converted to a 24-point scale with scores greater than or equal to the mean (15.1) classified as good involvement in pregnancy related care. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and association between qualitative variables was established using Chi-square test at p < 0.05. Results: Sixty-three percent had good knowledge of pregnancy related care. Majority believed that they had roles to play in their partners' care during pregnancy (89.9%), labor and delivery (92.9%), and in newborn care (97.5%). Overall, 56.9% had good involvement in pregnancy related care. About 20% followed their partners to antenatal care (19.6%) and postnatal (19.9%) clinics. A significantly higher proportion of respondents with good knowledge accompanied their partners for antenatal care (p = 0.008) and postnatal care clinic (p = 0.014); participated in birth preparedness (p < 0.001) and assisted with newborn care (p < 0.001). Job demands, social stigma and long waiting time at the health facilities were reasons highlighted for non-involvement in pregnancy related care. Conclusions: The study revealed gaps in knowledge and involvement in pregnancy related care. There is a need for reproductive health policy review to strongly emphasize the need for involvement of male partners in reproductive health issues including pregnancy related care. AIMS: To examine the woman-centeredness of maternity care providers from the woman's perspective. To investigate the validity and reliability of the Client Centered Care Questionnaire among a childbearing population. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: The self-report Client Centered Care Questionnaire was administered to evaluate women's one-on-one antenatal and postnatal care appointments with various Dutch care providers: community and hospital-based midwives, General Practitioners, (registrar) obstetricians, sonographers, and maternity care nurses. RESULTS: Eight-hundred and fifteen completed questionnaires were received. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses provided support for a two-factor model, with an acceptable model fit. Woman-centeredness of all maternity care providers showed scores above baseline for the neutral value. Welch ANOVA showed a statistical significant effect of the type of maternity care practitioner in providing woman-centered care during antenatal and postnatal visits (F (5.8) = 7.79). The Bonferroni post hoc test showed that women assigned significantly higher woman-centered care scores to community-based midwives compared with hospital-based midwives (p.011) and compared with registrars/obstetricians (p <.001). CONCLUSION: Although overall scores of perceived woman-centeredness indicated a good to excellent performance of woman-centered care, with significantly higher scores for community-based midwives, it cannot be assumed that current woman-centered care completely meets the needs of Dutch childbearing women. The Client Centered Care Questionnaire (CCCQ) is an adequate instrument to measure woman-centered care in antenatal and postnatal maternity services. We assessed the completeness of care provided during perinatal visits at public institutions in Uttar Pradesh (UP), India. Self-reported data from 53 interviews with birth attendants throughout 12 districts in UP showed that 52% of the items from a procedural checklist were covered during visits. Routine visits were found to be incomplete, provider training related to pharmaceuticals and counseling were suggested to be low, and the monitoring of vitals to be infrequent and inconsistent. We suggest further grassroots research be conducted in developing nations so that strategic and precise reform can be made to lower global maternal mortality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: World health organization estimates that more than half a million women lose their lives in the process of reproduction. Use of maternal health services is an effective means for reducing the risk of maternal morbidity and mortality, especially in places where the MCH services utilization was poor. Aim & Objective: The main objective of this study was to assess the utilization of MCH services among postnatal mothers in selected hilly areas of Uttarakhand. Material and method: The study has adopted exploratory descriptive design. The data was collected from 196 postnatal mothers within 42 days of postnatal period by administrating self structured questionnaire in selected community areas of Pauri District, Uttarakhand. Samples were selected by using convenient and consecutive sampling technique. Results: Majority of women sought at least one prenatal and one postnatal visit in health care providers during their recent pregnancy. The findings of study shows that approximately half (52.93%) of mothers utilized MCH services. Out of these services highly utilized MCH service was Janani Surkhsha Yojana cost benefits (82.7%) and institutional delivery (81.6%). The low utilized services by mothers were family planning services (18.36%). Conclusions: This study demonstrated that utilization of maternal health services is inadequate in hilly area in general. The finding of this study will help the nurse-midwife who are working in community and hospital side to understand the utilization of MCH services and provides evidence to address women's problem for ensure effective utilization of available MCH services. Background: Maternal and child healthcare services are very important for the health outcomes of the mother and that of the child and in ensuring that both maternal and child deaths are prevented. Studying these services is necessary in developing countries where infrastructure (which is meant to deal with these health services) is minimal or lacking. The objective of the study is to examine the factors that influence the use of maternal healthcare services and childhood immunization in Swaziland. Methods: Our study used secondary data from the Swaziland Demographic and Health Survey 2006-07. This is an explorative and descriptive study which used pre-selected variables to study factors influencing the use of maternal and child healthcare services in Swaziland. We ran three different types of analyses: univariate, bivariate and multivariate. For the multivariate analysis, a logistic regression was run to investigate the relationship between the dependent and independent variables. Findings: The study findings showed a high use rate of antenatal care (97.3%) and delivery care (74.0%) and a low rate of postnatal care use (20.5%). The uptake of childhood immunization is also high in the country, averaging more than 80.0%. Certain factors which were found to be influencing the use of maternal healthcare and childhood immunization include: woman's age, parity, media exposure, maternal education, wealth quintile, and residence. The findings also revealed that these factors affect the use of maternal and child health services differently. Conclusion: It is important to study factors related to maternal and child health uptake to inform relevant stakeholders about possible areas of improvement. Programs to educate families about the importance of maternal and child healthcare services should be implemented. In addition, interventions should focus on: (a) age differentials in use of maternal and child health services, (b) women with higher parities, (c) women in rural areas, and (d) women from the poor quintile.
