The structural, elastic and electronic properties of XCoSb along with the impact of pressure on the structure of the compounds are discussed in this paper. Calculations have been carried out using the pseudopotential plane wave method within generalized gradient approximation according to the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (GGA-PBE) method. At ambient conditions, XCoSb crystallizes in a C1b-type cubic structure and we observed that at high-pressure VCoSb, CrCoSb and MnCoSb undergo a phase transition from cubic to the LiGaGe-type hexagonal structure. Elastic constants are reported for the first time. The electronic band structure and density of states (DOS) show that ScCoSb and TiCoSb are semiconductors and non-magnetic while VCoSb, CrCoSb and MnCoSb are half-metallic ferromagnetic. In addition, we have also calculated elastic moduli, Zener anisotropic factor, Poisson's ratio and transverse and longitudinal sound velocities from the second-order elastic constant. Recently following the success of the density functional theory (DFT) in obtaining the structure and thermodynamics of homogeneous and inhomogeneous classical systems such as simple fluids, dipolar fluid and binary hard spheres, this theory was also applied to obtain the density profile of a molecular fluid in between hard planar walls by Kalpaxis and Rickayzen. In the theory of molecular fluids, the direct correlation function (DCF) can be used to calculate the equation of state, free energy, phase transition, elastic constants, etc. It is well known that the hard core molecular models play an important role in understanding complex liquids such as liquid crystals. In this paper, a classical fluid of nonspherical molecules is studied. The required homogeneous (DCF) is obtained by solving Orenstein-Zernike (OZ) integral equation numerically. Some of the molecules in the liquid crystals have a sphere shape and this kind of molecular fluid is considered here. The DCF sphere of the molecular fluid is calculated and it will be shown that the results are in good agreement with the pervious works and the results of computer simulation. Finally the electro-optical properties of ellipsoid liquid crystal using DCF of these molecules are calculated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coarse-grained models of lyotropic solutions of semiflexible polymers are studied by both molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations, using an implicit solvent bead-spring model with a bond-angle potential. We systematically vary the monomer density, persistence length, and contour length over a wide range and explore the full range from the isotropic-nematic transition to the nematic-smectic transition. In the nematic regime, we span the entire regime from rigid-rod like polymers to thin wormlike chains, confined in effective straight tubes caused by the collective nematic effective ordering field. We show that the distribution of bond angles relative to the director is well described by a Gaussian, irrespective of whether the chains are rod-like or rather flexible. However, the related concept of "deflection length" is shown to make sense only in the latter case for rather dilute solutions since otherwise the deflection length is of the order of about two bond lengths only. When the solution is semi-dilute, a substantial renormalization of the persistence length occurs, while this effect is absent in the isotropic phase even at rather high monomer densities. The effective radii of the "tubes" confining the chains in the related description of orientational ordering are significantly larger than the distances between neighboring chains, providing evidence for a pronounced collective character of orientational fluctuations. Hairpins can be identified close to the isotropic-nematic transition, and their probability of occurrence agrees qualitatively with the Vroege-Odijk theory. The corresponding theoretical predictions for the elastic constants, however, are not in good agreement with the simulations. We attribute the shortcomings of the theories to their neglect of the coupling between local density and orientational fluctuations. At ambient pressure both CaTe and SrTe are known to exist in NaCl type structure (B1 phase) and undergo structural transition at high pressure to CsCl type structure (B2 phase). Most theoretical studies presented regarding the structural transition from B1 to B2 phase are based upon enthalpy comparisons. In this paper, we have computed elastic constants C 11 , C 12 , and C 44 for both phases at various pressures and used Born stability conditions to compare the relative mechanical stability of both phases with pressure. The dynamical stability of these structures has been investigated using phonon dispersion calculations at different pressures. Our study finds that phonon dispersion calculations match well with enthalpy based predictions for the transition from B1 to B2 phase. Moreover, the Born stability conditions are necessary but not sufficient conditions to predict the structural stability of a crystal. Both CaTe and SrTe are 3D Dirac metals in the B2 phase and exhibit linear dispersions of electronic states near the Fermi level. The structural, electronic, elastic and thermodynamic properties of Curium Monopnictides Cm X ( X = N, P, As, Sb and Bi) are investigated using first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) and full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method under ambient condition and high pressure. The exchange-correlation term is treated using two approximations spin-polarized local density approximation (LSDA) and spin-polarized generalized gradient approximation generalized (GGA). The structural parameters such as the equilibrium lattice parameters, bulk modulus and the total energies are calculated in two phases: namely NaCl (B1) and CsCl (B2). The obtained results are compared with the previous theoretical and experimental results. A structural phase transition from B1 phase to B2 phase for Curium pnictides has been obtained. The highest transition pressure is 122 GPa for CmN and the lowest one is 10.0 GPa for CmBi compound. The electronic properties show that these materials exhibit half-metallic behavior in both phases. The magnetic moment is found to be around 7.0 B. The mechanical properties of Cm X ( X = N, P, As, Sb and Bi) are predicted from the calculated elastic constants. Our calculated results are in good agreement with the theoretical results in literature. The effect of pressure and temperature on the thermodynamic properties like the cell volume, bulk modulus and the specific heats C and C, the entropy and the Grüneisen parameter have been foreseen at expanded pressure and temperature ranges.
